How to Catch a Superhero
by
T.J. Nichols
Mathew Inkley pulled on the red suit. It was nothing special, but years of costume making at the community theater had given him enough knowledge to put together something that would at least make him look like a villain worthy of going up against Eclipse. And he really wanted to get up against Eclipse.
He glanced at the pin board where he’d stuck newspaper clippings of Eclipse’s latest good deeds. As heroes went Eclipse had it all: tall, dark haired and olive skinned he was impossibly good looking as well as being incredibly accurate with his throwing knives.
A man like Eclipse was never going to look twice at a museum curator, even one responsible for the unexplained artifacts section. Some attributed the strange things to aliens, other to magical beings from myth. Mathew believed it was the latter, not that it mattered what he believed.
No. The only way to get Eclipse’s attention was to give him a reason to look. Mathew was going to have to commit some kind of crime. He sighed, but he had no desire to actually hurt anyone or go to prison.
He unzipped his suit and let the cape twirl to the floor in an elegant heap.
A fancy costume did not make him a villain. He was still the same bespectacled nerd who got passed over for everything. But he was no longer going to sit and wait for something good to come to him. If he had to be a little bad then so be it.
He had access to a whole room filled with mythical and magical artifacts. All he needed to do was borrow the right one and he was sure Eclipse would arrive on his doorstep. And then…?
And then he’d be waiting with a bottle of red wine, slow cooked roast beef, and his to die for banoffee pie.
Cute, right? Let TJ know what you thought of How to Catch a Superhero below! Big thank you to TJ from the Unicorn Mafia!
TJ Nichol's latest release, Poison Marked - coming December 1st from Dreamspinner Press.
Kill his lover or disobey his king and instigate civil war?
As the feared court poison master, Nikko is sworn to do as his king bids. As the lover of the king’s nephew, Lord Rodas, Nikko must hide his affection or risk being labeled a traitor and punished. A former thief who clawed his way into the palace from the filthy streets, Nikko longs to be deserving of Rodas’s love.
A respected war hero, Rodas is in a delicate political situation. He is not the kingdom’s natural heir, though many support his claim over the wastrel, Prince Fortin. The last thing Rodas wants is war. His highest ambition is for Nikko to openly wear the jewels he’s bestowed on him as a public declaration of their love.
Neither man is prepared for the king to order Nikko to poison Rodas during the solstice feast or for the deadly intrigue they’re plunged into, which exposes their affair and rocks the foundations of the kingdom.

Thanks for such a fun post, TJ. And talking of superheroes... who’s my favorite? Considering I just watch that Avengers: Infinity War trailer my brain’s just short-circuited and can’t think!! LOL.
ReplyDelete(I’ll just point to everybody in that franchise for now. *g* )
A hot geek who cooks...what superhero could resist? As for me, I pick SuperGrover: helpful, cute, rocks a coal scuttle with style. And he's Grover, only super!

Thanks for the post, TJ. I'm having fun trying out haikus, so if you can endure, here's one that's humorous, but b/c it's actually factual:
ReplyDeleteMarco Polo thought

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed, thank you
Well, I always love Catwoman. She's my favorite superhero since I'm a little girl. Even if I don't read comics, I don't see her as a villain but more like misunderstood superhero
ReplyDeleteI used to be big on Superman and Batman when I was a kid. Now, I like Deadpool.
ReplyDeleteOk, another haiku:
My son saw today
