Catch of the Day

Slowly, Elias walked down the beach, following the music and stopping whenever it got lost in the whistling wind. Someone was singing, but he couldn’t figure out where it was coming from.

When he could hear the song, the words eluded him, but it sounded sad—the singer kept stuttering to a halt as if he were too choked up to go on. It was a strange song too, with an uneven melody that seemed to follow the ragged-rhythm sigh of the surf. Something about it was oddly compelling, pulling him along.

Finally, the song led Elias to the old dock, but it fell silent the moment he stepped foot on the rotted boards.

“Hello?”

There was no reply, but Elias heard a soft splashing beneath his feet. He leaned over the side of the dock and peered into the shadows. Eyes still adjusting to the gloom, he could just make out a naked shoulder and a pale hand reaching towards him in the water.

The figure whimpered.

“Holy shit. Hang on, dude,” Elias said, letting himself down over the side of the dock. The water wasn’t more than chest deep, but the footing was rocky and treacherous. He eased himself between two pilings and reached out, clasping the man’s hand… and immediately saw the problem: there was an old fishing net twisted around some of the supports and the man was half trapped beneath it.

Poor guy must have gone out for a swim and got caught up in the net.

“I’ll get you out of there. Don’t worry. You’ll be okay, okay? Just don’t panic…” He grabbed a handful of net and started hacking at it with the small rigging knife on his keychain, trying to make sense of the tangled mess in front of him. Thankfully, the guy held still, moving only to hold up parts of the net that could be cut away.

It soon became apparent that a snarl beneath the surface was caught on the closest piling. “I’m just going under for a sec, okay, dude? You’re almost free.” It didn’t seem like the guy was in any risk of drowning, but Elias had no idea how long he’d been trapped like this—despite how warm the water felt, the risk of hypothermia was real.

He took a deep breath and reached forward, blind in the dark, silty gloom, only to surface in surprise after only a few seconds. Elias wiped his face, panting. It felt like there was a big fish also caught in the net.

“Holy shit,” he said, reaching below the water trying to figure out whether the thing was alive or dead. “Okay, there this fish… I need to um…”—he moved closer to try to feel further along its slimy side—“just bear with me a… sec.” Elias’s eyes widened and he yanked his hand away, nearly losing his footing in the process.

“What the fuck.” He breathed hard a few times, trying to make sense of what he’d touched. His fingers had continued along the fish’s scales, thinking he’d come to a head or tail, but instead the scales had transitioned to smooth flesh… and his fingers had encountered a very human-like nipple.

“What the fuck,” Elias repeated, staring at the figure trapped beneath the dock.

The creature was a mermaid. No, wait, a merman.

Elias could make out wide-set eyes watching him unblinking from beneath a mop of dark hair. The creature didn’t seem threatening, and when it whimpered again, Elias decided that he couldn’t very well just leave it trapped there. However, in the back of his mind were the stories of mermaids luring sailors to their watery deaths…

Elias laughed nervously, trying to shake off his fears. “Hang on,” he said, not knowing if the merman could understand him. “I’ll get you free.”

Got your motor running didn't he? Sneaky author is sneaky. Good news is he was inspired by the pic and could possibly be publishing the rest of it in the near future so make sure you let the kind author know how much you crave would like the rest of this story. We unicorns thank Bey for helping us celebrate another year of unicorning.
