Audiobook Review: The Palisade (Lavender Shores, #1) by Rosalind Abel

Confident businessman Joel Rhodes sees the small California town of Lavender Shores as nothing more than a business opportunity and a final stepping stone to the position he’s been working toward his entire life. It was supposed to be just one night in town to close the deal, and sleeping with one of the local men, no matter how gorgeous, meant nothing more than a few hours of fun.
Andrew Kelly is perfectly content with the life he has in his hometown. So much so that the only thing missing is someone to share it with. Going to bed with a tourist was never meant to be the answer to his dreams, just a beautiful distraction. He could get back to looking for Mr. Right the next day.
Both Andrew’s and Joel’s worlds are turned upside down when a few hours of pleasure get extended to a couple of days. Even that shouldn’t have been a big deal. You can’t fall in love in that amount of time. That isn’t how it works. However, if destinies collide, a few short days may be all it takes to find your soul mate. Even so, when secrets and motivations get tangled, fate may do nothing more than leave two hearts in pieces.

For the most part this book was low angst and an effortless read, but it didn't work for me on many levels. But it also seems like I'm a minority in this, so please feel free to ignore me.

I'm not too fond of Kirt Graves as narrator. He doesn't really differentiate between the characters so at times it's a bit difficult to keep up with which character is narrating/speaking. Don't get me wrong, he is very pleasant to listen to but you need to focus much more than with other narrators.

For me to really enjoy a book I need to like the main characters, when I don't I spend the time being irritated on one/both of them instead of enjoying the story being told. Such was the case here. I never really liked Joel. Sure he'd always been bullied by his dad. But at some point he needs to be able to stand up for himself. Joel never did. Instead he went behind the back of people he claimed to love and respect. He knew what he did was wrong and that it would hurt those very people, but he kept on doing what he did anyway. I'm sorry, but that is not okay in my book.

I'm also a big fan of slow-burn romances. Where things are allowed to take time, to develop naturally. I can believe in that, I believe in those feelings. Here we got insta love and insta lust.

I do believe a lot of people will like this book, so don't discard it because I didn't like it. The writing is solid, and who knows, the rest of the series might work better.

Review: The Veranda (Lavender Shores #3) by Rosalind Abel

Donovan Carlisle helps countless people in Lavender Shores with his skills as a therapist. It seems, however, that his ability to enable others to live their happiest life only works outside of himself. Donovan truly loves his life, but isn’t able to find a relationship that satisfies his heart’s craving. Maybe the problem is that the only man he wants is off-limits.
Spencer Epstein came to Lavender Shores to find himself. Instead, he married one of the local town beauties. He’d thought his prayers had finally been answered. Then, he met his pregnant fiancĂ©e’s brother. It turned out those answered prayers were just cruel twists of fate.
A decade later, after a divorce and crumbling of all Spencer thought was set in stone, he sees his brother-in-law at a masquerade sex party. He takes full advantage of the anonymity and acts on the desires he’s held at bay all those years. The problem is, those silent and frenzied moments didn’t satiate anything. The fire and heat between the two men only grows as secrets are uncovered and they must determine if the cost of their passion is too high.

Once again, Rosalind Abel has written a beautiful story about love, life and the pursuit of happiness without any messy drama or stupid miscommunication angst getting in the way.  Hooray!  I will sing this author's praises til the cows come home for that.

For those of you who have been keeping up with this series, The Veranda is Donovan and Spencer's story.  Donovan we know from The Garden, Gilbert and Walden's story (otherwise known as Book Two).  Donovan is Lavender Shores's resident therapist.  He knows everyone's secrets and has helped many of the town's people through their hard times, most notably talking Gilbert from the edge.  He's older, wiser, quiet and unassuming.  But, he's been harboring his own secret for nearly ten years now.

You see, Donovan is and has been for quite some time, in love with his sister's husband.  Sure, it's unrequited but that doesn't make it any less real.  It was love at first sight that was never acted upon and there's no hope for it to ever become anything more, even if his sister's divorce is now final.  You can't turn a straight man gay; life is not a M/M romance novel, after all.

After a chance encounter at a Pride party, Donovan may have to rethink the past ten years of his life.  Turns out, Spencer may have been harboring a secret of his own.

I really enjoyed getting to know these two men and watching their journey together.  I always love it when I get a story with characters who are older than the normal twenty-two year olds that are in most stories of this genre.  I'm in my early forties with kids who are the same age as most of those characters and it kinda weirds me out to read about the sexcapades of what I consider to be barely adults.

Donovan has a good head on his shoulders and isn't prone to drama.  I really liked that about him.  I loved Spencer more though.  Spencer is a man who knows what he wants and isn't afraid to go after it.  He's got his second chance in life and he doesn't squander it.  He's not repressed but he isn't wild either.  No mid-life crisis for this man!  He's not out to anyone other than his parents and his ex-wife yet but he's working towards it.  I wouldn't say he's closeted, really.  He's got his kids to think about.  He doesn't want to do anything that will hurt them, especially since the divorce is so recent.  Once he makes up his mind, though, hot damn!  He's direct and assertive and, holy cannoli is that some kind of hotness right there!

"I'm not a kid, Donovan.  I'm thirty-nine, a damn good lawyer, a father of two, and I know what I want.  I've known what I've wanted for a long, long time.  Just because I didn't allow myself to have it or act on it doesn't mean I wasn't certain of it."

I've said it before but it bears repeating:  what I love most about this story, this series and this author is the communication.  There's no running away, no miscommunication and no Big Misunderstanding to be found in any of these books.  The characters actually talk to each other; tell each other how they feel.  Communication is so damned sexy!

I love all of the characters in this series.  It was great to see everyone again.  I have fallen in love not only with these two men, but this town and all of it's inhabitants.  Except Erica.  She can take a long walk off a short pier.  That woman has Issues (yes, that's capitalized, because reasons).  She could use a good dose of therapy.  Maybe Donovan could hook her up with a colleague or two.  Or four.  She really needs it.  Bratty woman is bratty.

Review: The Garden (Lavender Shores #2) by Rosalind Abel

Beautiful Gilbert Bryant designs jewelry for the rich and famous, and he made his escape from his gossipy little hometown of Lavender Shores. However, with so many friends and family, he keeps getting pulled back. When he attends his best friend’s engagement party, Gilbert can’t help but sample one of the new men in town. It’s just some innocent—or not so innocent—fun. Nothing that will even cross his mind once he gets back to his everyday life.
Walden Thompson dreamed about living in Lavender Shores since he visited as a child. He finally gets his chance, and he embraces the opportunity to start over, to become someone new. He leaves both hurts and dangerous habits in the past, where they belong. When Gilbert crosses his path, Walden gives in to his baser instincts. He can indulge in the carnal pleasures this once and still be okay.
Their few hours together haunt Gilbert, the two-hundred-mile buffer from home no longer shutting out the past or the sexy man he left behind. Walden is just beginning to recover from the smoldering encounter with Gilbert when they are thrust together once more. This time, neither of them can walk away, no matter how hard they try. But when their pasts crash into each other as surely as the magnetism that pulls them together, walking away may be the only option.

This series has fast become one of my most anticipated reads and The Garden did not disappoint!  I loved this just as much as I did The Palisade but for wholly different reasons.  Where the first book was full of swoon-worthy romance and tropey goodness, Gilbert and Walden's book had a more serious tone.  That's not to say I didn't laugh during this book because I LOL'ed quite a bit, especially with Walden.

One of the things I love most about this series and this author is that the characters and the story are never what I expected.  I will think a character is going to be one way but then they take off in a completely different direction.  It's fantastic!  Take, for instance, Walden.  A big, tall hunk of corn-fed man meat with an ass for days (dat ass!) and I'm expecting Toppy McTopperson, III with a big ole' chip on his shoulder.  What I got instead was a shy, sweet, awkward middle school science teacher with a big heart and an even bigger desire to have his field thoroughly plowed.

Walden is some kind of special.  He's incredibly awkward and oh so adorable.  Completely pocket-worthy.

Her brother? She was going to introduce me to her bother? A Bryant, obviously. Holy shit, what if she introduced me to Gilbert? How was I supposed to play that off? Obviously I wouldn’t look at her and be like Oh, we know each other. He used my ass so hard I was still feeling him this morning.
Or worse, what if Gilbert wasn’t her brother, but a cousin or something and she introduced me to whomever her brother actually was. Then Gilbert walks up, and it looks like I’m trying fuck my way through the entire Bryant family?
You get in my pocket right now, Walden!  Do you hear me, Mister?  RTF Now!

And Gilbert... I thought I had him pegged from the first book but he surprised me even more. I thought he was a playboy who didn't take life very seriously and would be a bit immature.  Nope!  Not this Gilbert.  Yeah, he was rough around the edges and talked a good game but underneath was sensitivity and the kind of maturity that gets my motor running and will guarantee a successful read for me.  This is a man who conquers his demons the right way, through therapy, and isn't afraid to admit when he's afraid.

That wasn’t how being a man worked. How being an adult worked. You fixed yourself. You didn’t wait for love to do it for you. You fixed yourself, and then you earned love.
*dreamy sigh*

I'm so incredibly in love with this series I can hardly stand it.  The way the author portrays these characters has me swooning.  The communication!  Lawd, the communication in this book is outstanding!  Communication is so damned sexy.  Gilbert and Walden actually talk to each other, about what they're thinking, about how they're feeling and it. Is. Fabulous!  There are zero Big Misunderstandings here.  Yes, they have secrets, but - and here's the kicker - they share them with each other.  I know, right?!?!?

You know what else is sexy?  Dirty talk.  Holy hotness of the mouth, this had some serious dirty talk in it!  I thought I was going to burst into flame during some of the scenes, especially that first scene.  Like, whoa.  Gilbert, man... he's got some serious talent there.  He could teach a class on it, like 'Dirty Talk 101' or something.  Hoo boy!

I want everyone to read this book.  I want everyone to read this series.  I want everyone to fangirl along with me.  I loved this so damned much!

Thank you, Boy Meets Boy, for having me here for an exclusive excerpt from The Garden, and thank you to each of you who’ve stopped by!

The Garden is the second book of the Lavender Shores series. Each of the novels can be read as a stand-alone or as part of the series. I’m going to let the excerpt and blurb speak themselves, but I will promise you romance, steamy sex, laughter, all the feels, and a happily ever after. Whether you read The Palisade (the first book in the series) or not, you will thoroughly enjoy this particular visit to Lavender Shores.
The Garden is available from Amazon and is also free on Kindle Unlimited. I can’t wait for you to fall in love with Gilbert, Walden, and Lavender Shores.

Each of the stops on the blog tour have focused solely on Gilbert and Walden’s time together, but for our final stop, I wanted to give you a humorous moment with Gilbert’s family. It’s the first time Walden is meeting Gilbert’s parents. A moment some of us remember clearly when we started dating our significant other. Always a fun endeavor. I hope you enjoy! Try not to cringe.

(Side note. The picture doesn’t match this scene at all. But, I couldn’t resist!)

Gilbert held out the flowers. “Here, Mom, Walden brought these. It seems he’s trying to romance you instead of me.”
Regina took the bouquet, raised the flowers to her face, and breathed deep. She sighed contentedly, then looked at me, her expression serious. “Well, I am the better option, definitely. But my son does have his charms, as I’m sure you’ve discovered.” She winked, then headed into the kitchen, raising her voice as she walked. “Walden’s here, everyone! Line up and introduce yourself. Mark this down as the day we got a new Bryant in the family! And the day after the Kellys got Joel. Just perfect.” She continued muttering cheerfully as she disappeared behind a wall in the kitchen.
I turned to Gilbert and gaped, sure I’d heard her wrong.
He shrugged. “I should’ve warned you. I don’t bring men home, so they’ll all assume this means….” His words wandered off, and he broke eye contact.
Lacy leaned in, nudging me with her shoulder. “Better brace yourself, sweetie. You’re not going to be bored.”
The introductions were thick and fast, sweeping any astonishment aside. Patrick, Gilbert’s dad, was the opposite of his wife. Where she was all big blonde hair and low-cut pastel dress, he was sleek and handsome and serious. Then Gilbert and Lacy’s older sister, Hayley, her husband, James, and their three children, Dillon, Jackson, and Olive. It put me at ease to have kids there. If worse came to worst, I could pull my teacher card and entertain them. Then Micah, who’d played the violin at the wedding. Finally, Connor, who still made me feel small. He was the one who stood out. Darker and so different from the other Bryants, especially with all his tattoos. As he shook my hand and clapped me on the shoulder like we were old friends, I noticed the same purple-and-blue heart tattoo on the back of his right hand that Gilbert had on his shoulder.
There was no time to ask about it as Regina called out that dinner was ready.
Meals at my home were quiet. Just my mother, father, and me. They’d gotten quieter every year as I became more and more of who I was and less of the son they’d hoped and prayed I’d be.
By the time the meal was halfway over, I was nearly overwhelmed. With all the voices, laughter, the barking of two dogs that appeared from nowhere as the meal was set out. People spoke over each other, Olive started to cry when one of her older brothers made a face at her from across the table, Micah laughed way too hard at something Connor said.
It was noise, noise, noise.
And I thought I liked it.
Gilbert was discussing something with Lacy, his fork already halfway to his mouth, though he hadn’t even finished chewing his bite of baked chicken as he continued yakking away. He must have felt my gaze, as he glanced over and cocked a questioning brow. I smiled and nodded in a way I hoped was reassuring. He didn’t look fully convinced but smiled back and resumed talking to Lacy.
I’d been so convinced that there wouldn’t be anyone else after Levi. That part of me had broken irrevocably. And I figured that was still true. Or at least that I’d been broken so badly I was never going to be the same Walden I’d been before. I’d also assumed that I’d never be able to trust anyone else again either. But as I looked around at the Bryants, I realized that part wasn’t accurate. Levi had kept me from everyone. And everyone from me. Which, looking back, made sense; he’d lived a secret life. I was his secret life. At least one of them. But Gilbert and I hadn’t gone further than admitting to each other we both had feelings, and there I was. Surrounded by his family, by nearly everyone who was important to him. None of this was secret. And maybe it was too much, too fast. But I was glad it was this way. Overwhelming to be sure, but it made me feel safe. Not only that he was who he claimed to be, but that the feelings I saw in his eyes were truly real.
Gilbert had set down the fork and rested his hand on my thigh as he spoke to Lacy. It was an unconscious, automatic gesture, at least it seemed. I marveled at that. I’d wanted more with Gilbert. Had for months, even though I’d never thought it could happen, hadn’t even been sure I was ready. But there I was, surrounded by his family, him touching me as he chatted with his twin, like he simply needed to know I was there. My heart soared. Fear bit at me as well; I didn’t think I was strong enough to go through loss again, but I did my best to shove that worry aside. Reaching over, I slipped my hand into his, the table hiding it from view. He glanced back at me again. He smiled once more and squeezed my hand. “I’m glad you’re here.”
I leaned closer. “Me too.”
Maybe his mom noticed, since she sat across from us, or maybe she’d simply decided the meal had gone smoothly enough. She pushed back from the table with a flourish and stood. “I’ll be right back.”
Patrick sighed loudly as he shook his head toward his wife’s vacant chair.
Gilbert straightened instantly, his voice panicked. “No. Mom. No. Absolutely not. Sit back down.”
She was already lost in another room.
“Might as well accept it, bro. It only gets worse if you fight it.” Micah waggled a fork at his brother. “Remember when I had a crush on Sam Welby in fifth grade and brought him here? At least you’re not ten and you don’t have to worry about all your classmates talking about your ass for the next year.”
Connor shook his head. “That’s nothing. The only childhood picture she got from my mom was me in the bathtub with my dick tucked between my legs. That was real fun having a guy you were planning on sleeping with see you like that first.”
Picture she got from his mom?
“I still remember Hayley’s,” James piped up from across the table. “Prom night, and that was definitely not the image of Hayley’s ass I was planning on seeing that evening, let me tell you.”
Patrick cleared his throat at his son-in-law. “Need I remind you that your three-year-old daughter is at this table?”
James blushed. “Sorry, sir. You’re right, sir.”
Hayley shook her head and grinned at Gilbert. “It is your turn. Finally.”
Before I had a chance to figure out what they were all talking about, Regina was back and she wedged herself between Micah and me. She swatted at him. “Scoot over, baby.” He did, and she plopped down, sharing the chair with him, then shoved the plates and dishes out of the way on the table with a clatter before slamming a large photo album down in front of me. The edge of it hit a spoon, which shot across the table, nearly hitting her husband. The two little boys at the end of the table giggled.
Regina was oblivious and held the album closed as she leveled her gaze on me. “I’m assuming since you know my son biblically, you also know what he does for a living.”
Beside her, Micah snorted. “Right, Mom, because Gilbert has had that conversation with every guy he’s known biblically.”
“Hey.” Gilbert leaned back in his chair and reached around us just enough to swat him in the back of the head.
“Well”—Regina bobbed her head—“he does have a point, dear.” She returned her quizzical gaze to me.
It took me a moment to remember what the question had been. “Oh, yes. He designs jewelry.”
“Very true.” She nodded in approval. “Well, one day I came back from walking Anne—she was our cocker spaniel at the time—and I strolled into my bedroom to find this!” She flung open the album to the place her thumb had saved.
Beside me, Gilbert groaned, and Lacy burst out laughing.
Regina pointed a long periwinkle nail at the picture. “You’ll notice he had excellent taste in jewelry even back then.”
I leaned closer, unable to stop the smile I felt growing. In the photo, a little Gilbert stood in the center of a room. Naked except for the countless strings of pearls and gold around his neck. Behind him, a girl who could only be Lacy sat at the vanity, still clothed and making a mess of lipstick across her face.
Regina tapped it again. “Notice that the jewelry nearly covered up the private bits, but not quite.”
Gilbert raised a finger in the air, drawing my attention away from the album. “I want it pointed out that I’m not fighting this because I know it’s pointless, but I also want to let you know that I hate you all.”

To be continued. . .

See, meeting the future in-laws isn’t that bad. Well, sometimes.
I hope you enjoyed that glimpse of The Garden, and the some of the characters you’ll fall in love with as you journey along side Walden and Gilbert. Pick up the book on Amazon and visit the town of Lavender Shores at: http://www.lavendershores.com. Thank you so, so much! Rosalind

Review: The Palisade (Lavender Shores #1) by Rosalind Abel

Boy howdy, did I love this book!

This shouldn’t have worked for me.  One of the things I dislike the most in stories is a lack of communication; followed closely by secret keeping.  Both of these breed mistrust and could easily be avoided if the morons would just talk to each other.  This story has more of the keeping secrets issue than the lack of communication, so it shouldn’t have worked.  Like, at all.  But it did. On so many levels.

Joel has come to Lavender Shores at the behest of his millionaire father to secure a location for their new flagship coffee shop.  It doesn’t matter if the laws in this sleepy town by the sea prohibit anyone from opening a chain of any kind, nor does it matter if they only allow one of each type of business to be open at a time.  His father wants it so he’s going to get it, even if it means throwing his son in front of the firing line.

Andrew was born in Lavender Shores and has no intention or desire to ever leave.  He loves his quaint, odd-ball little town.  He couldn’t picture himself living anywhere else.  It may have caused him some serious heartache throughout the years as every guy he’s dated eventually left but it’s worth it to him to wake up every morning in what he feels is the best place in the world to live.  His dream of white picket fences, two dogs and three kids seems to get farther and farther away as the years go by but he hasn’t given up on it yet.  He knows he’ll have his dream someday, but while he’s waiting for Mr. Everything to show up he’s gonna have some fun.  And it looks like Mr. Fun just showed up.

He was going to taste me.  Lick me.  Bite me.  Devour me.

Lordy, is it getting hot in here?

Man, y’all, this book is soooo romantic!  Completely swoon worthy.  What starts out as an incendiary eye-fuck across the room and a burn-the-hotel-to-the-ground one night stand swiftly progresses to one of the most romantically romantic romances I’ve read in a while.  I tell you, I had hearts in my eyes and was in danger of falling out of my chair in a swoon to rival any Southern belle.  Here, let me give you a little taste of what it feels like to have your heart burst from an overflowing of emotion:

[…]he looked into my eyes, and I saw the forever.  Past the heat and lust, I saw forever.  Saw our lives in this little house.  Saw three kids.  Two dogs.  Saw laughter, fights, and love-making.  Saw our hands clasped as our skin aged.

I saw his declaration of love in his green eyes as clearly as my heart shouted it from my chest.

The writing in this book is superb.  It’s been a while since I was sucked into a book so far that I couldn’t tell where their lives ended and mine began.  The outpouring of emotions, from love, laughter, anger, despair had my heart so full that it leaked out of my eyes.  I cried a lot during this book.  I cried happy tears, I cried angry tears and I cried tears just because my body didn’t know how else to deal with all of the feelings I was having.  It was just so… so… charming!  It charmed the pants right off me.

I’m so glad I took a chance on this book.  To think, if I had passed this up I would’ve missed out on Andrew’s sweet innocence, on watching Joel’s whole world light up over a simple baseball card, on meeting Andrew’s family – especially his dad.  Andrew’s dad is in a class of his own.  You gotta meet him, people!  You’ll be sorry if you don’t, I can promise you that.  I’m also squee-worthy excited that there are more books to come in this amazing series.  I cannot wait to read the next book.  Cannot. Wait.

So, if you haven’t guessed by now from my review, I highly, highly highly recommend this book to all you romance lovers out there.  This one’s for the history books, my friends.

Gah!

Love this book!
