Review: Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

A big-hearted romantic comedy in which First Son Alex falls in love with Prince Henry of Wales after an incident of international proportions forces them to pretend to be best friends...

First Son Alex Claremont-Diaz is the closest thing to a prince this side of the Atlantic. With his intrepid sister and the Veep’s genius granddaughter, they’re the White House Trio, a beautiful millennial marketing strategy for his mother, President Ellen Claremont. International socialite duties do have downsides—namely, when photos of a confrontation with his longtime nemesis Prince Henry at a royal wedding leak to the tabloids and threaten American/British relations.

The plan for damage control: staging a fake friendship between the First Son and the Prince. Alex is busy enough handling his mother’s bloodthirsty opponents and his own political ambitions without an uptight royal slowing him down. But beneath Henry’s Prince Charming veneer, there’s a soft-hearted eccentric with a dry sense of humor and more than one ghost haunting him.

As President Claremont kicks off her reelection bid, Alex finds himself hurtling into a secret relationship with Henry that could derail the campaign and upend two nations. And Henry throws everything into question for Alex, an impulsive, charming guy who thought he knew everything: What is worth the sacrifice? How do you do all the good you can do? And, most importantly, how will history remember you?

🎵 Plenty of heart and plenty of hope

OooooooooCaseyM-C, whose fresh voice comes sweepin' down the plain
And the sparkling banter, sure smells sweet
When the wit slashes down like a blade

(IDK what's gotten into me here, just go with it)

OoooooCaseyM-C, ev'ry word made me wish for a world
Without an Orange One whose
Makin' a fool of himself while
We all know we can do better for this land
This land we belong to is grand!

And whether we say White House Trio or Super Six!
Or Alex and Henry-AY!
We're only sayin'
You're doin' fine, OoooooCaseyM-C!
OooooooCaseyM-C, OK!

(going a lil off script with this last bit)

BLUE Texas in 2020! WOO! 🎵

Anyhoo, I think it's safe to say if a book makes you break into show tunes, it's prolly pretty great. This story was exactly what I needed-light, fluffy and warmed me up from the inside out with its hopefulness and optimism. Part enemies to lovers story and part coming of age story, it's smart and engaging and delivers some much needed escapism with the added bonus of being deliciously swoony. Alex and Henry fall hard but not fast which I appreciated.

He kisses Henry until it feels like he can't breathe, until it feels like he's going to forget both of their names and titles, until they're only two people tangled up in a dark room making a brilliant, epic, unstoppable mistake.

The banter is delightful and Henry's razor sharp wit made me snortle time and time again. The Star Wars debates (#TeamAlex here; it's sad how wrong Henry is in his wrongness), the Harry Potter references and the correspondence whether it be text or email all brought a smile to my face and the excerpts that ended their emails? Three words: squishy marshmallow goo. Told exclusively from Alex's POV and, admittedly, there were times I wished for Henry's but the dialogue and correspondence went a long way, and in the end this is really Alex's journey of self discovery so it's fitting that he tell it.

They bring out the best in each other even when they're sniping at the other and when all that pent up frustration and desire morphs into something more it was electric.

Should I tell you that when we're apart, your body comes back to me in dreams? That when I sleep, I see you, the dip of your waist, the freckle above your hip, and when I wake up in the morning, it feels like I've just been with you, the phantom touch of your hand on the back of my neck fresh and not imagined? That I can feel your skin against mine, and it makes every bone in my body ache? That, for a few moments, I can hold my breath and be back there with you, in a dream, in a thousand rooms, nowhere at all?

I never expected to fall in love with all these characters like I did, not just Alex and Henry but June, Pez, Oscar, Ellen, Cash, Zahra, Shaan and most notably Nora. Nora is my hero. All of them are well crafted. All of them love each other and mostly importantly they have fun together. They all read age appropriate. If there were to be more stories in this universe, I would not be mad about that. At all.

The effort that McQuiston put into developing not only these characters but the romance was striking and the care she took in folding in geopolitical and domestic issues with aplomb combined with her seamless integration of diversity, got my attention. Sure, you have to suspend a little disbelief but the heart of what's being addressed is a troubling reality that she didn't shy away from addressing; she just put a more hopeful spin on it.

A spin, that I might add, I would get decked out in sparkly shoes, a tutu, ready for some epic heel clicking and am fully prepared to offer to do something unpleasant. Not illegal or amoral, mind, but unpleasant like voluntarily ingesting jicama 🤢🤢🤢 to make this alt-reality a reality. Just point me in the right direction. I'm ready for duty!

Last but certainly not least, Texas! YYYYYYAAAASSSSSSSS!!!!! BBQ ribs and elotes and lazy summer days and a sky so blue it'll take your breath away FTW! It always ramps up the appeal of a book when I can connect on such a visceral level like I did here. Coupled with the fact that I share the deep and abiding hope that Texas will be a battleground state in 2020 deepened my connection to it.

My quibbles are minor, namely that I think it could've been tighter. Some parts of the narrative I thought were long-winded. Time could've been demarcated better, though that could get cleaned up before it's officially released. If so, someone let me know and I'll bump my rating up to 4.75 stars.

So, if you're interested in a feel good and swoony escapism from the superbadawful 24/7 news, then give Red, White & Royal Blue a whirl.

Review: Getting His Man (Getting His Man #1) by B.G. Thomas

A love story worthy of an old movie… with a new twist.

Artie needs a hero, a man like those he’s always revered in Golden Age films. His drug-dealing jerk of a roommate got him arrested, and since his savior isn’t likely to sweep in and save the day, Artie calls a bail bondsman.

August has always imagined himself a hero from a black-and-white movie, but he’s never found a man willing to let him play that role—at least not until he gets the call from Artie.

Both of their dreams might come true, but not before August must use his skills as a bounty hunter as well as a bondsman. Artie is on the run for his life, and August must protect him and help him clear his name. Only then can they both finally get their man.

Oh my goodness, I loved this.

This book is full of old Hollywood movie goodness and read exactly like the movies I used to watch over and over again with my dad. If you love old movies where the rough and tough guy falls for the slip of a girl, you are going to love August and Artie.

Like something out of the old black-and-white romantic movies he liked to watch with his mother. It was romantic is what it was. Marvelously, wonderfully romantic.

When Arthur Bailey innocently eats a medicinal brownie from his pothead dealing roommate Willie, things go bad. Artie gets arrested and charged with something he didn’t do and needs to get bailed out of jail. The bail money will wipe him out of every penny he’s saved to move into his own place to escape the speed metal and cloud of marijuana floating in his shared apartment but what’s a guy to do?

When August is sent to bail Artie out, he gets more than just a case file. From the first look at Artie, August is lost in those big doe like eyes and feels the pull to protect this young man. When August realizes how stoned Artie still is from the brownies, he takes it upon himself to be the one to get Artie through this, no matter what.

Quick note: Now I say young but really August and Artie have less than 10yr age span between them, so young is used really in regards to how Artie looks because while he’s 24, he looks barely legal.

Anyway.

Told from the Dual POV of our leading men, we get to know them through their actions and inner dialogue. Both men have a strong love for classic romantic movies and leading men who are exactly their type. On first site, Artie fits August physically and emotionally. All August wants is a man to love and to take care of. To be that light and strength his man can depend on and protect his lover even if that means taking a bullet for him. August wants to be someone’s hero in every way. Artie wants the strong leading man to swing him around the dance floor while dancing his way into his heart. He wants the most romantic scenario to happen in his life.

I watched those old movies with my mom and my sister while I was growing up, and they shaped what I want in love. I want the stars. I want a happy ending.

August Sterling… I mean. That name alone is swoon worthy and August has that classic old school Golden Age of Hollywood Leading man vibe to him. Regardless of the character he could be playing, August has being a gentleman down to finest detail and the way he feels about Artie from the first look made me grin and I never stopped smiling. This book follows the formula of the classic romance movies so perfectly that I could see this translated to film. It helps to have all the movies the men like mentioned in the story along with the leading men they admired. If you haven’t seen any of the ones highlighted in the book, do yourself a favor and check a few out. You won’t be disappointed.

Now Artie, and surely he was an Artie. Never an Arthur, is downright adorable. Gosh, I love that he is doing everything he can to be an independent man but being so trusting, he trusted the wrong person and now has been arrested and has to go to court. When August comes to his rescue, it’s like all of Artie’s romantic movie wants have come true because August is Sam Spade, James Bond and Fred Astaire all rolled into one charming package from is dark hair to his sexy feet.

The way Artie sees August is the quintessential romantic hero with all the suave and debonair moves that come naturally to August and sweep Artie off his feet. I can say my feet felt a bit floaty as well while reading because August is swoony.

I love the old school Hollywood vibe of this book! I keep saying that because the story bleeds the essence of those movies. The big strong man of the "law" rescuing the innocent but gorgeous girl, *ahem* boy, in need and falling for them. Yup totally up my ginger alley.

Where was I with this? Goodness I got lost in my own head.

So, August wants to take care of Artie and Artie wants August to take care of him but they play this slow burn slow dance and try to keep things professional between them. But when the bad guys with the drugs and Artie’s roommate start tossing around threats, Artie takes it upon himself to be the martyr of his happiness and do what he thinks is right. He just forgot one small thing, August isn’t just a bail bondsman, he’s a bounty hunter and he knows how to track and find what he wants.

[...]Bailing people out? That’s just a few hours of my week. Getting my man is what I live for.
Oh boy. This got all up in your face hero/rescue/sexy times that had me blushing at my desk while I read. What August does to Artie, what August teaches Artie and what he asks of Artie was so sensual I think I almost melted right off my chair. I loved how every time Artie questioned himself or tried to do what he thought was right, August had to get his man and show him… everything.

Wow. Rambling Red needs to wrap this up, ya think?

This was another winner in the Dreasmspun Desires series. Artie and August stole my heart as they formed a bond over their shared interests, over protecting each other and as they fell in love and got everything the movies they watched promised. Their own Happily Ever After.

Release Day Tag Team Review: Late In The Day (The Vault #2) by Mary Calmes

Terrence Moss. Conrad Harris. Gold Team Leader. Darius Hawthorne. The Vault. Juggling all these names would bother some, but for Darius, it’s business as usual. When he closes a chapter in his life, he leaves a name—and the people associated with it—behind. He’s managed to keep a few colleagues, even fewer friends, and no companionship through his forty-plus years… but that’s now changing.

The newest chapter of his life is bringing serious change: a stable home, a recovered identity, an unlikely family, and now a chance encounter with the one man Darius ever loved: Efrem Lahm. The reasons they parted are still valid, and there’s no way they can trust each other. But Efrem has already decided he won’t let Darius go… and Darius will have to decide if he wants to take a chance with his heart this late in the day.

Greeting Calmes Crack Whores!  Red and I are back for another episode and we can't wait to dish about the amazing man known to us as Mother Fucking Conrad!  <-- this was the title to our latest chat.  So, without any further ado...

Red: Ready to start when you are!

JL: Yay! Let's start tonight!
P.S. I heard one should [NOT SPOIL THE BOOK WITH A SPOILER BEFORE WE EVEN START READING!]

Red: We should? I will if I need to. Wait. Is [THIS A SPOILER???? NOT EVEN!]  Hmmmm... I expect this book to have a shit ton of Cameos!

Red - 5 Hearts

It’s gonna be hard to review this for a number of reasons.
Hard because I can’t get my fangirl words to flow from my fingers.
Hard because there is so much that needs to be read first hand.
Hard because there is not a damn thing you could offer me to spoil this.
Hard because what I want to say isn’t so hard.

I. Loved. This. Book.

For some reason after I finished reading this, I started to think back on all that makes Darius Hawthorne; who he is, his relationship with people he cares about and the man he simply cannot live without and every thought led me to Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Don’t ask, it’s just the way my 6 degrees of randomness works but when I started to recall my favorite moments from the movie, certain moments, certain lines just fit.

So, every quote in this review isn’t from the book, they are from the movie, Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

“They're not the kind of stories you can really tell.”
“Too dirty?”
“Yeah, I suppose they're dirty, too, but only incidentally. Mainly they're angry, sensitive, intensely felt, and that dirtiest of all dirty words – promising.”

Red:  Okay. I am at [SPOILER%] and my mind is already blown. There will be no way to review this and no way we can even put in our chats.

JL:  I'm a little ahead of you. Ok, a lot. I'm at [SPOILER%] and I don't want to spoil it for you but dear God read faster! I HAVE SO MUCH TO DISCUSS!
I think that's a great idea by the way. Our chat will be nothing but SPOILER and OMG, did you see where SPOILER did SPOILER. LOL  well, we did warn you...

Red: You read way fast! I've been reading as much as I can during work. I leave in just under 1.5 hrs and then I have yoga and then I can attempt to read a bit before I pass out.

Red:  Okay. I just got to the mention [SPOILER OF SPOILING SORTS]...  WTAF and FUCK YEAH! I love the layered details we get of the vault and why Conrad was asked to be it and all about his names and how he wants [NOT TO SPOIL ANYONE FOR OR ANYTHING FROM THIS BOOK!]  This woman is amazing. My GAWD she is so smart.
I am waiting for more Cameo's to show up though with all his names.

Knowing we were getting a story of Conrad Harris was exciting. After reading A Day Makes and learning Conrad had numerous aliases all that the Calmes fan had met before was mind blowing but reading how they all came to be was epic. Epic and really quite sad. I am of the persuasion that Darius Hawthorne may be the saddest hero of Mary’s I have yet to read. Sure, Darius is one badass motherfucker but Darius is lonely.  He has not only cut ties with the names he used to hold but the life he led as that name and the people all became collateral damage.

Anyone who ever gave you confidence, you owe them a lot.

Now just because he’s left so many behind it doesn’t mean they don’t play a significant role in Darius’ life because they do. Every choice he’s made entwines with the man’s DNA and allows Conrad Harris to have the reputation as a man you don’t want to cross. The outright level of confidence that bleeds off Conrad is palatable but it’s never on the side of arrogance. The man has done the job that he’s been assigned and paid to do but the return was less than retail could offer.

Ahh... Do I detect a look of disapproval in your eye? Tough beans buddy, 'cause that's the way it's gonna be.

Red:  She's killing me. And here I thought the airport reunion with Ian and Miro was hot AF! [MIGHT BE A SPOILER] is burning my eyes it's so sexy and so intense with emotion. *swoons at the romance*

Learning how Darius becomes The Vault was so entertaining. After a few cameos from the author’s other books, we learn exactly how Darius gets the new job. It was funny, it was snarky, and it had some serious emotions as we take a trip down memory lane with Darius and his internal struggles. The whole scenario OF The Vault is so layered and detailed that I am once again amazed by how strong and creative a storyteller Mary Calmes truly is. She is so damn clever with all of this that I am truly in awe.

The blues are because you're getting fat and maybe it's been raining too long, you're just sad that's all. The mean reds are horrible. Suddenly you're afraid and you don't know what you're afraid of. Do you ever get that feeling?

I think Darius does get a case of the mean reds throughout parts of this book. He has known the way of life that is a contact killer for so long, transitioning to the vault is a lesson he never thought he’d have to learn. It was actually adorable watching the man thaw and his life become complicated. But nothing can complicate your life like love.

How do I look?
Very good. I must say, I'm amazed.

Red: SHE IS KILLING ME WITH THE FEELS!!!!!!

JL: I KNOW!!!!
Prepare to get [NOT SPOILED EVER WITH THIS CHAT BECAUSE SPOILING SPOILS STINK]

Efrem Lahm is nothing short of stellar and stops at nothing to shred my heart into pieces. I think this is one hell of a romantic short of the forever love telling and Efrem and Darius have it all. From their first meeting, to the first kiss, to the first everything and then some. I fell hard for Efrem, I fell hard for the couple he and Darius made and I fell hard for the man Efrem has become in the years he’s been apart from the love of his life.

“You know what's wrong with you, Miss Whoever-you-are? You're chicken, you've got no guts. You're afraid to stick out your chin and say, "Okay, life's a fact, people do fall in love, people do belong to each other, because that's the only chance anybody's got for real happiness." You call yourself a free spirit, a "wild thing," and you're terrified somebody's gonna stick you in a cage. Well baby, you're already in that cage. You built it yourself. And it's not bounded in the west by Tulip, Texas, or in the east by Somali-land. It's wherever you go. Because no matter where you run, you just end up running into yourself."

You might be confused by the last quote but trust me, it fits and nothing fits better than that last line. When the reunion happens between Efrem and Darius there is so much emotion and things left unsaid that it gets heated fast. I honestly think we, or um… the author has maxed out TMCSS (The Mary Calmes Separation Stipulation) at 16 years!  It was so damn painful knowing what both Darius and Efrem went through over those extremely long years they were apart but it also gave me a ridiculous amount of hope.

Red:  And 16 years. Is that the longest time frame for The Mary Calmes Separation Stipulation?

JL: I believe it is.

“I love you.”
“So what.”
“So what? So plenty! I love you, you belong to me!”

Late in the Day is such an amazing and romantic story full of cameos of beloved characters and the final telling of one man’s stellar story. All the elements a Calmes fan could want are in this but there is just so much emotion tacked on that it weighed on my poor hopeless romantic heart. I love where they author took everyone, how she gave them humor, wit, love and family all while still letting each of them be who they are even if that means scary contract killers have tea with… *sigh. I can’t say but it’s one of those things that makes you laugh because it’s such a Calmes thing to have her characters do.

JL - 5 Hearts

Guys.  Guys.  I have been waiting for this book for so long.  So. Long.  You don’t know how bad I’ve wanted to read Conrad’s story.  You. Just. Don’t. Know.  Did it live up to my expectations?

You bet your ass it did!

Whatever you know him as, be it Conrad, Terrence or Gold Team Leader; Darius Hawthorne has been sneaking in and out of Mary’s books for years.  He’s like a ninja, swooping in, showing just enough of himself to pique our interest and then swooping out again.  He’s been an enigma and to finally get his story?  Why, it’s EVERYTHING!

Red: This makes me wanna go back and read all the books with him in it to look at them in a new way. You know? If only I had unlimited time to read.

JL: I know exactly how you feel. I also want to go back and read every book that the cameos are in.

If you’ve read A Day Makes, the first book in this series, then you know that Darius has recently become the Vault.  (What’s the Vault, you say?  Well, I’m not gonna tell you.  You’ll have to read the first book to find out.)  With the new job comes a LOT of new responsibilities, but it also comes with a sense of freedom Darius hasn’t experienced in decades.  He’s finally able to slow down a bit and just breathe.

JL:  [SPOILERY SPOILER QUOTE THAT I’M NOT GONNA SPOIL.]
Exactly how I would live my life if I could.

Red: Darius just handed [SPOIL NAME] the job of a lifetime and himself the golden ticket! He just needs the love of his life by his side. Ugh. I hope [EPIC ROMANTIC SPOILER OF SPOILS THAT DOES NOT NEED TO BE SPOILED!]

JL: I'm sure he will. Mary won't let us down. [QUOTES THAT ARE SPOILERS BUT QUOTES THAT WE THINK YOU WILL HIGHLIGHT TOO!]

He’s hand-picked his team and boy, there are some interesting characters among them!  Some you will recognize from other books but there are a couple that are new.  One in particular that I’m sure everyone will love as much as I do.

JL:  I'm liking this [SHHH SPOILS IN A POT NEVER SPOIL].  He's very sassy.

Red: I haven't got to [SPOILSPORT SPOILER] yet. Just got to [A POSSIBLE SPOILER I WON’T SPOIL.]

JL:  Ha!  I highlighted that [SNARKY SPOILER] too!

This was like the culmination of all of the books Mary has written in this world.  There were so many cameos and references to other stories that my head was spinning and I was constantly squealing in delight.

Red: Okay. I am stopping at [SPOILERING] Chapter [SPOILER]! LOL I can't stop reading. This is so good. But of course it is, right? But IT IS SO GOOD!

JL: SO GOOD!

I love playing six degrees of Kevin Bacon with Mary.

Red: I know! I honestly thought when [DOUBLE, DOUBLE, SPOIL AND TROUBLE]  instead. I am still waiting to see if they show up.

And the banter in this book!  OMG!  I think this is the snarkiest book Mary has written to date.  I was seriously LOLing throughout a majority of the story.  It showed to me how much Mary has grown in her writing over the years.

JL: “Just because you’re the vault doesn’t make you good or any more likely not to go to hell.”
“We’re carpooling, I’m aware.”

So snarky! I'm loving all the banter in this one.
But it’s not all fun and games in this book, no sir.  There were parts that were so heartfelt, so emotional that I couldn’t help but sob into my pillow.  Being alone for most of his life, Darius hasn’t been able to make the connections that are needed to keep one healthy and sane.  He’s lonely but doesn’t really know how to go about fixing his problem.  What makes it even harder to bear is that there was a time in his life that he wasn’t lonely.  He knows what love is, he’s experienced it before, but it was ripped away from him in an instant that, while he doesn’t regret doing what he had to do to protect his love, he wishes would have happened differently.

JL:  It had gone nothing like I’d thought it would. Never in my wildest dreams had I imagined that Efrem would [YOU DIDN’T SERIOUSLY THINK I WAS GONNA SPOIL THIS PART, DID YOU?]
Aaaaaand now I'm sad.
Red:  I've highlighted those same parts! Listen to him. Ugh. I just realized while I was in corpse pose, Conrad is possibly the saddest MC MC (Mary Calmes  Main Character) ever. He's so lonely giving up or lost everyone he's ever loved.

JL: I know. He's so lonely. I want to give him a hug.

Throughout his life, there has only been one person that made Darius feel alive.  One person that made him think that being a human being on this planet was worth it.  Efrem.  They had five glorious years together before they were ripped from each other’s arms.  Darius never got over Efrem.  Sixteen years later and a chance encounter leaves Darius with a hope that he’s scared to feel.  Will Efrem feel the same as he did all those long years ago?  Is the love still there?

When you were moving at the speed of sound, being alone made sense, but as soon as the scenery outside the window became recognizable shapes instead of a steady blur, you longed for home.  Efrem was the only home I had, and the constant ache in my chest was the yearning for him.

JL: Stupid book with stupid Efrem making me cry.

Red: I know! Where are you? I just started chapter [SPOILERING SPOILY STUFF.]
[...]
I'm done. That. Was. Good. And. Romantic AF!

Thank you, Mary.  Thank you for writing this book.  It was everything I ever wished it could be.  And the story’s not done!  There is still a thread that hasn’t been resolved.  I for one cannot wait to read the final book in this trilogy.  It’s going to be EPIC, I just know it.

Review: The Sumage Solution (San Andreas Shifters #1) by G.L. Carriger

Can a gentle werewolf heal the heart of a smart-mouthed mage?

NYT bestseller Gail Carriger, writing as G. L. Carriger, presents an offbeat gay romance in which a sexy werewolf with a white knight complex meets a bad boy mage with an attitude problem. Sparks (and other things) fly.

Max fails everything - magic, relationships, life. So he works for DURPS (the DMV for supernatural creatures) as a sumage, cleaning up other mages’ messes. The job sucks and he’s in no mood to cope with redneck biker werewolves. Unfortunately, there’s something oddly appealing about the huge, muscled Beta visiting his office for processing.

Bryan AKA Biff (yeah, he knows) is gay but he’s not out. There’s a good chance Max might be reason enough to leave the closet, if he can only get the man to go on a date. Everyone knows werewolves hate mages, but Bryan is determined to prove everyone wrong, even the mage in question.

Delicate Sensibilities?

This story contains M/M sexitimes and horrible puns. If you get offended easily, then you probably will. The San Andreas Shifter stories contain blue language, dirty deeds, and outright admiration for the San Francisco Bay Area. Not for the faint of heart (mouth/tongue/etc.).

I have to admit that I was surprised by how well this turned out for me.  I read the prequel, Marine Biology, and thought it was a cute little shifter-fluff story.  It wasn't bad, a bit silly perhaps, but there wasn't really much to it.  I thought I would be getting more of the same with this book.

I couldn't have been more wrong.

I was blown away by this story.  I loved it so much!  The banter between Max and Bryan was off the charts and I laughed out loud many, many times. This is my kind of humor; a mix of witty banter, clever one-liners with some juvenile shenanigans thrown in to sweeten the pot.

It sparkled on his tongue with tiny bubbles of carbonation.  "Really, Max?  Fizzy jizz?"
"I see werewolves do have a heightened sense of taste.  It's a mage thing."
"The champagne of cocks?"
"See how I spoil you?"

I mean, how can you go wrong with a mage whose jizz is carbonated and a werewolf whose is spicy like hot sauce?

"I like it when you call me Bryan."
"Not Muscles?"
I like it when you call me that too, Trouble." You can call me anything you like so long as you smile that way.
"What if I call you Habanero?" Max waggled his eyebrows suggestively.
"Only if I can use Sparkles."
"Ew, no."
"Seltzer?"
"Stop it." Was Max blushing? Super hard to tell.
"Carbonation Man?" Biff pressed his advantage.
Max sputtered coffee. "Here I cum to save the day?"
"Mighty jizz is on it's way?"
"With the power of fizzy dick!"

This wasn't all humor and shenanigans; there was quite a bit of depth here too.  Max is a sumage, a dud, who never manifested his powers.  He's been reduced to being no more than a dumping ground for "real" mages to off-load their excess magic when it builds up too much.  Having grown up hearing how much of a disappointment he is from his abusive father, he's a bit bitter.  Okay, that's a lie.  He's way more bitter than just a bit.  I may or may not have wanted to shake him a few times or at least sit him down in front of a mirror, a la Stuart Smalley until he could see how wonderful a person he is and how valuable he is to those who love him.

Bryan came along just in time, it seems.

Bryan, oh Bryan. *sigh*  I love that big, stoic werewolf something fierce!  He doesn't say much, but when he finally opens his mouth, the most gorgeous words flow out.  I won't spoil it by quoting it here because some things you need to experience for yourself, but when he finally spoke up and told Max how he really feels, it was exquisite.  It had me swooning like a proper Southern lady.  I must have read that passage about ten or fifteen times, it was so beautiful.

What surprised me the most about this book was how smart the writing was.  The story is told in such a way that you don't get how clever it really is until you're smacked in the face with a chapter title and a couple of paragraphs a little more than halfway through the book.  I was just reading along, enjoying the humor when WHAM!  and it was like a lightbulb going on over my head.  It was so clever!  Very tongue-in-cheek, if you will.

I loved all of the other characters as well.  Every one of them had a distinct voice; there were no cookie-cutter or throw-away characters to be found.  Even the villain had quite a bit of depth to them.  The only thing I found a bit lacking was the world building when it came to the magic.  It wasn't that the actual world building was lacking per se, but sometimes I felt like the author was referencing things from a previous book or series and I was supposed to already know what this stuff is and the history of it.  But, seeing as how I've never read this author before, I got a bit lost in the telling of how it works.

This was a fun story packed with tons of feels.  I really hope the author writes many more books for this series.  If you like a good shifter story, this is the book for you.  If you like witty banter and shenanigans, this is the book for you.  If you like a story with depth and angst and romance, this is the book for you.  Hell, if you like to read, this is the book for you.  Cause, really, you can't go wrong with this story.
