A new life in New Orleans is all Jason Thorpe had hoped: his quaint little store attracts a devoted staff and his warm, loving heart grants him a loyal circle of friends. He's perfectly content, having left behind the chill of a confusing and danger-filled night in Washington, until he discovers something unbelievable lurking in the steamy darkness of the shadowy streets of the Vieux Carré, something that turns out to be terrifying... and utterly mesmerizing.
The prince of the vampyrs, Varic Maedoc, is visiting New Orleans when he finds out the man who once helped his counselor is there in the Quarter. He thinks to simply meet and thank Jason—until he lays eyes on him. Varic’s devoted himself to protect the honor of his race, and he's never wanted a mate before... but he immediately knows he must have this man, and no one else will do.
Varic may want to bring Jason safely into his world, but someone who doesn’t like the human's soothing influence on vampyrs has deadly plans that would disrupt Varic's dreams. Now, unable to tell friend from foe, Jason finds himself wondering how to hold on to the prince’s heart when he’s fighting for his life.

First let me just say I love Mary Calmes. All her books bring me joy and I was slavering to get my hands on this one, but it sort of left me a little, I don’t know, blah?
The wiring is as lovely as I have come to expect, the characters are so warm and charming, but it wasn’t quite what I was hoping for. I did find Jason a bit annoying or even one-dimensional at first, and It almost felt like the start of the book had nothing to do with anything. Then Jason is in NOLA and things can start happening. I loved the shop idea, but it was all so very perfect. From his meeting his assistant, to the appearance of Vampyres in his shop.
There seemed a lot of not much going on until Varic arrives and all hell breaks loose. There was a lot of interesting characters along the way, but for some reason, a lot of it felt incomplete. The ending in particular felt like there was another movement missing from the play.
Maybe I’m just being grumpy, and don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy the book lots, but it wasn’t life-changing for me like many of Mary’s shifter books have been in the past (compared to say, Control or The Change of Heart series) I just felt like I needed more. Maybe there will be more in the series, and we’ll see the development of other characters and more of the arrival of Varic and Jason at court and so on. I really hope so!
As for the narration, it was wonderful! Very nicely done with brilliant characterisation and added dimensions to the written word. Scott was well cast and gave a super performance.
I’ll listen and read again to see if it settles better with me with another go-around. I expect it will.
I was given a free copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Tutoring soccer star Owen Baker was
going to be the death of me.
He was amazing and gifted and could, I
was made to understand, score goals that would have impressed Beckham. And just
like that, thinking about him and what he needed from me for his future and
that of the school, I went from bumbling geek to the man who could help him.
In the next month, we were together
almost daily, becoming friends, and that time only cemented my worst fears—that
he was just as beautiful inside as out. I was crazy about him and helpless to
stop.
It was the hardest to be just buddies
when I watched him practice and that too had become my new normal. I’d started
going because what had been first a throwaway offer had changed to him repeatedly
asking and eventually insisting.
That day, as I sat there in the
bleachers, thinking about the night and day time we spent in one another’s
company, I happened to look up as he ran by and when he smiled…my heart
stopped. I couldn’t breathe. I was in way over my head and had to put a stop to
my hopelessly romantic feelings.
Getting up, climbing down the bleachers,
I was on the field and bolting toward the parking lot when he caught up with
me, his strong hands on the sides of my face, me sweaty from baking in the sun,
him from exertion, both of us panting.
“I—you...” I began, my voice stopping
and starting, just like my heart.
“You just figured it out huh?” He
pressed his forehead to mine, serious now, no smiling, just sharing my air.
“That I’m kind of crazy about you.”
“Yeah but—I’m…and you’re…and we––”
“Stop,” he said gruffly, leaning me
forward into a kiss.
It was everything I dreamed, long, deep,
and he opened my mouth and took and claimed and moaned loudly because he was
what I wanted more than life.
“Yeah,” he husked, taking a breath,
licking his lips, tasting me on them. “I want us to be a really big thing all
right? What do you want?”
“That,” I answered succinctly. “I want
that. I want you and me. I want you with me.”
He kissed me again.
“So now when you walk me to class, will
you hold my hand?” I asked him when I could breathe.
“I can hardly wait.”

Audiobook Review: Twisted and Tied (Marshals #4) by Mary Calmes
Deputy US Marshal Miro Jones finally has everything he ever wanted. He's head-over-heels in love and married to the man of his dreams, his partner Ian Doyle, he's doing well at work, and all his friends are in good places as well. Things are all tied up nicely...until they're not.
Change has never been easy for Miro, and when situations at work force the team he's come to depend on to break apart, and worst of all, his and Ian's individual strengths put them on two separate paths, he's pretty certain everything just went up in smoke.
But before he can even worry about the future, his past comes for a visit, shaking his world up even more. It's hard to tell what road he should truly be on, but as he learns some paths are forged and others are discovered, it might be that where he's going is the right course after all. If he can navigate all the twists and turns, he and Ian might just get their happily ever after.

When I heard that the audio was finally out for this I was all grabby hands! I’ve had the pleasure of listening to Tristan James for the 1st three stories, and I had no trouble listening to the last!
James brings Ian and Miro to life - perfectly portraying them through all their challenges, harrowing situations, and the intense wonderful love they have for each other while never shirking on the smexy! Unf.
Fans of this series will not be disappointed. It’s fabulous, and I’ll be revisiting this narration often just like I’ve done with the others!

Audiobook Review: Late in the Day (The Vault #2) by Mary Calmes
Terrence Moss. Conrad Harris. Gold Team Leader. Darius Hawthorne. The Vault. Juggling all these names would bother some, but for Darius, it’s business as usual. When he closes a chapter in his life, he leaves a name—and the people associated with it—behind. He’s managed to keep a few colleagues, even fewer friends, and no companionship through his forty-plus years… but that’s now changing.
The newest chapter of his life is bringing serious change: a stable home, a recovered identity, an unlikely family, and now a chance encounter with the one man Darius ever loved: Efrem Lahm. The reasons they parted are still valid, and there’s no way they can trust each other. But Efrem has already decided he won’t let Darius go… and Darius will have to decide if he wants to take a chance with his heart this late in the day.
Listening Length: 5 hrs and 41 mins
Narrator: Greg Bordeaux
The big bad wolf finally meets his match. Or, in this case, is reunited with his match.
I’ve been waiting to read Conrad’s (who’s really Darius) story for a while. Ever since he handled Trevon and Landry’s cray-cray like a champ in ‘Mine’, I’ve been just a bit smitten with the mysterious hitman.

I listened to this book in audiobook format, and Greg Boudreaux did an excellent job. Absolutely no complaints from me on that end!
Being the Vault has changed Darius. He’s no longer the isolated one-man fortress he used to be. He’s got friends now, which might make him vulnerable, but he’s also a lot more human.
Like book 1 in this series, ‘Late in the Day’ is more about the main character’s journey than it is about the romance. I wasn’t entirely sure if that would work when I picked up book 1, but I really like this different approach by Mary Calmes.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Darius’ past and how he ended up as the Vault. Plus, it was great to finally find out who the man was underneath the rock-hard exterior.
That being said, the romance is no way lacking. Readers learn through flashbacks how Efrem and Darius fell in love, and what events transpired to drive them apart for so long.
The two are so obviously meant for each other. Both in the flashbacks and in the present, there’s a thread binding them together that can’t be denied.
For Darius, who’s spent so many years watching his back, Efrem is the only man he can let his guard down around. And Efrem never stopped looking for the man who owned his heart.
Plus, the two bring some serious heat. This isn’t a particularly steamy read, but the sexytimes that are there definitely don’t leave anything to the imagination!
My only complaint: I would have liked some more drama/action. Considering who Darius is, I was waiting for something to happen. It would have made an already very entertaining read even more so.
Regardless, this was a great read/listen! If you enjoyed book 1 in this series, I highly recommend ‘Late in the Day’!

R *A Reader Obsessed* - 5 No Brainer Stars!!!
Unless Mary Calmes killed off one of the MC’s, this was never going to be less than 5 stars for me.
Seriously, if you’ve come this far then Miro and Ian have worked their wiles into your heart, and how can one not see how this plays out? This series has always been front and center about their relationship - always. As these two go from coworkers to best friends to lovers to husbands, the focus has been on point regarding their progression, and let me tell you that from the beginning, it has been fucking hot, it has been fucking swoony, and it has repeatedly fucking melted me into a pile of ooey gooey goo.
Calmes for me can be a hit or miss (though thankfully, mostly a hit). Here she incorporates everything I love about romance. Claiming proprietary love, crazy gleeful shenanigans in and amongst the quieter moments, and it's those quiet moments that slayed me. These two love each other so much but it's not without a little doubt or insecurity despite the fact that they’ve tied the knot. What I absolutely adore is how they treasure each other, how they show their love. It's the little things just as much as the big, and it’s all in what they each say and what they each do. I cannot express how much I revel in such strong feels.
I’ve said this before. Tough alpha males just do it for me because despite all that strength, despite all that bravado and stoicism, love changes things. Miro and Ian are badass Marshals but when together, they can let their guard down, they can be themselves, and that vulnerability, that intense intimacy and the desperate painful need to have the other, kills me every damn time, and Calmes nails it with expert precision over and over again.
Many a review has talked about the changes that occur here, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Really, it was fabulous watching these two do what they're best at and come into their own individually. Also, this continued to evolve and meld such a large cast of characters, nicely expanding on what family and friendship is in all its fun funny dramatics, always with some ridiculousness but with a ton of heart too.
Even better, this sets up perfectly for the spinoff to come. I can’t fucking wait!
Sooooo, obviously that was a very long and rambling explanation as to why Miro and Ian are in my top 3 ever, and this is by far the ultimate in my Calmes experience. My liberal use of cuss words is trying valiantly to convey just how much I loved this, but don’t just take my word for it. Take a chance on these two yahoos if you haven’t already, or hurry and bask in their happily, well deserved, ever after!

Review: Kairos by Mary Calmes
Sometimes the best day of your life is the one you never saw coming.
Joe Cohen has devoted the past two years of his life to one thing: the care and feeding of Kade Bosa. His partner in their PI business, roommate, and best friend, Kade is everything to Joe, even if their relationship falls short of what Joe desires most. But he won’t push. Kade has suffered a rough road, and Joe’s pretty sure he’s the only thing holding Kade together.
Estranged from his own family, Joe knows the value of desperately holding on to someone dear, but he never expected his present and past to collide just as Kade’s is doing the same. Now they’ve stumbled across evidence that could change their lives: the impact of Kade’s tragic past, their job partnership, and any future Joe might allow himself to wish for….
Short Calmes story gets a short review from the rambling redhead with minimal fangirling.
I love Mary Calmes.
I love the romances she gives us.
I love that she can give us one story about one couple but if you read between the lines and know the lineage of her work, the sum is always greater than the parts of the couple involved.
Now that I’ve said that.
I loved this story! Yes, I know it’s way too short but really anything from Mary is too short however, if you look at the romance, the story is complete.
I loved that we got to meet Kade and Joe long into their established friendship/partnership and Joe being head over heels for his best friend since forever. The banter between these two was fun and the way they both care about one another was beautiful. The UST between them was delicious and from the beginning, you can feel that there is more to how Kade feels than Kade lets on. But Kade’s actions speak just as loud as his words and they started to confuse my head and heart along with Joe’s.
The business with finding Declan, who belongs snuggled into someone’s pocket, really gave the story some meat and gave Kade and Joe to find their footing with one another. I mean, there is a lot that happens in this story with too few pages and it all happens in the span of one day. Yeah, you get your emotions tossed around to end up in a big fat pile of goo all in one day and it’s amazing.
The romance with Kade and Joe is on point for a Calmes romance. You have the fierce loyalty to one another, the protectiveness, the need to claim and the begging that I love and it all works perfectly. The first kiss with these two would have made me crumble from weak knees had I not already been in bed reading. It was perfect and swoony and hot. See. Totally a Calmes first kiss.
Now I know there were a few loose ends left blowing in the breeze with both Declan and Evan and I am hoping Mary has plans for them. Maybe even together because I could see Evan being the one to take care of Declan and Declan being able to grow and fly with Evan’s care. Just saying.
The name dropping ties into Chicago though… I may have had a small fantasy in my head where something comes up and all the Chicago couples collide? I mean, I know there’s a Valentines story with Ian, Miro and Sam and Jory so why can’t Kade and Joe and even Aaron and Duncan show up somewhere too?
Anyway.
I Loved it. This has all the classic Calmes tropes in it and Mary is a goddess.
I am so happy for Kade and Joe. Oh and Joe’s mom. For reasons when you read the book.

Red - 5 Hearts
You might be confused by the last quote but trust me, it fits and nothing fits better than that last line. When the reunion happens between Efrem and Darius there is so much emotion and things left unsaid that it gets heated fast. I honestly think we, or um… the author has maxed out TMCSS (The Mary Calmes Separation Stipulation) at 16 years! It was so damn painful knowing what both Darius and Efrem went through over those extremely long years they were apart but it also gave me a ridiculous amount of hope.

JL: Yay! Let's start tonight!P.S. I heard one should [NOT SPOIL THE BOOK WITH A SPOILER BEFORE WE EVEN START READING!]
Red: We should? I will if I need to. Wait. Is [THIS A SPOILER???? NOT EVEN!] Hmmmm... I expect this book to have a shit ton of Cameos!
Red - 5 Hearts
It’s gonna be hard to review this for a number of reasons.
Hard because I can’t get my fangirl words to flow from my fingers.
Hard because there is so much that needs to be read first hand.
Hard because there is not a damn thing you could offer me to spoil this.
Hard because what I want to say isn’t so hard.
I. Loved. This. Book.
For some reason after I finished reading this, I started to think back on all that makes Darius Hawthorne; who he is, his relationship with people he cares about and the man he simply cannot live without and every thought led me to Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Don’t ask, it’s just the way my 6 degrees of randomness works but when I started to recall my favorite moments from the movie, certain moments, certain lines just fit.
So, every quote in this review isn’t from the book, they are from the movie, Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
“They're not the kind of stories you can really tell.”
“Too dirty?”
“Yeah, I suppose they're dirty, too, but only incidentally. Mainly they're angry, sensitive, intensely felt, and that dirtiest of all dirty words – promising.”
Red: Okay. I am at [SPOILER%] and my mind is already blown. There will be no way to review this and no way we can even put in our chats.
JL: I'm a little ahead of you. Ok, a lot. I'm at [SPOILER%] and I don't want to spoil it for you but dear God read faster! I HAVE SO MUCH TO DISCUSS!I think that's a great idea by the way. Our chat will be nothing but SPOILER and OMG, did you see where SPOILER did SPOILER. LOL well, we did warn you...
Red: You read way fast! I've been reading as much as I can during work. I leave in just under 1.5 hrs and then I have yoga and then I can attempt to read a bit before I pass out.
Red: Okay. I just got to the mention [SPOILER OF SPOILING SORTS]... WTAF and FUCK YEAH! I love the layered details we get of the vault and why Conrad was asked to be it and all about his names and how he wants [NOT TO SPOIL ANYONE FOR OR ANYTHING FROM THIS BOOK!] This woman is amazing. My GAWD she is so smart.I am waiting for more Cameo's to show up though with all his names.
Knowing we were getting a story of Conrad Harris was exciting. After reading A Day Makes and learning Conrad had numerous aliases all that the Calmes fan had met before was mind blowing but reading how they all came to be was epic. Epic and really quite sad. I am of the persuasion that Darius Hawthorne may be the saddest hero of Mary’s I have yet to read. Sure, Darius is one badass motherfucker but Darius is lonely. He has not only cut ties with the names he used to hold but the life he led as that name and the people all became collateral damage.
Anyone who ever gave you confidence, you owe them a lot.
Now just because he’s left so many behind it doesn’t mean they don’t play a significant role in Darius’ life because they do. Every choice he’s made entwines with the man’s DNA and allows Conrad Harris to have the reputation as a man you don’t want to cross. The outright level of confidence that bleeds off Conrad is palatable but it’s never on the side of arrogance. The man has done the job that he’s been assigned and paid to do but the return was less than retail could offer.
Ahh... Do I detect a look of disapproval in your eye? Tough beans buddy, 'cause that's the way it's gonna be.
Red: She's killing me. And here I thought the airport reunion with Ian and Miro was hot AF! [MIGHT BE A SPOILER] is burning my eyes it's so sexy and so intense with emotion. *swoons at the romance*
Learning how Darius becomes The Vault was so entertaining. After a few cameos from the author’s other books, we learn exactly how Darius gets the new job. It was funny, it was snarky, and it had some serious emotions as we take a trip down memory lane with Darius and his internal struggles. The whole scenario OF The Vault is so layered and detailed that I am once again amazed by how strong and creative a storyteller Mary Calmes truly is. She is so damn clever with all of this that I am truly in awe.
The blues are because you're getting fat and maybe it's been raining too long, you're just sad that's all. The mean reds are horrible. Suddenly you're afraid and you don't know what you're afraid of. Do you ever get that feeling?
I think Darius does get a case of the mean reds throughout parts of this book. He has known the way of life that is a contact killer for so long, transitioning to the vault is a lesson he never thought he’d have to learn. It was actually adorable watching the man thaw and his life become complicated. But nothing can complicate your life like love.
How do I look?
Very good. I must say, I'm amazed.
Red: SHE IS KILLING ME WITH THE FEELS!!!!!!
JL: I KNOW!!!!Prepare to get [NOT SPOILED EVER WITH THIS CHAT BECAUSE SPOILING SPOILS STINK]
Efrem Lahm is nothing short of stellar and stops at nothing to shred my heart into pieces. I think this is one hell of a romantic short of the forever love telling and Efrem and Darius have it all. From their first meeting, to the first kiss, to the first everything and then some. I fell hard for Efrem, I fell hard for the couple he and Darius made and I fell hard for the man Efrem has become in the years he’s been apart from the love of his life.
“You know what's wrong with you, Miss Whoever-you-are? You're chicken, you've got no guts. You're afraid to stick out your chin and say, "Okay, life's a fact, people do fall in love, people do belong to each other, because that's the only chance anybody's got for real happiness." You call yourself a free spirit, a "wild thing," and you're terrified somebody's gonna stick you in a cage. Well baby, you're already in that cage. You built it yourself. And it's not bounded in the west by Tulip, Texas, or in the east by Somali-land. It's wherever you go. Because no matter where you run, you just end up running into yourself."
Red: And 16 years. Is that the longest time frame for The Mary Calmes Separation Stipulation?
JL: I believe it is.
“I love you.”
“So what.”
“So what? So plenty! I love you, you belong to me!”
Late in the Day is such an amazing and romantic story full of cameos of beloved characters and the final telling of one man’s stellar story. All the elements a Calmes fan could want are in this but there is just so much emotion tacked on that it weighed on my poor hopeless romantic heart. I love where they author took everyone, how she gave them humor, wit, love and family all while still letting each of them be who they are even if that means scary contract killers have tea with… *sigh. I can’t say but it’s one of those things that makes you laugh because it’s such a Calmes thing to have her characters do.
JL - 5 Hearts
Guys. Guys. I have been waiting for this book for so long. So. Long. You don’t know how bad I’ve wanted to read Conrad’s story. You. Just. Don’t. Know. Did it live up to my expectations?
You bet your ass it did!
Whatever you know him as, be it Conrad, Terrence or Gold Team Leader; Darius Hawthorne has been sneaking in and out of Mary’s books for years. He’s like a ninja, swooping in, showing just enough of himself to pique our interest and then swooping out again. He’s been an enigma and to finally get his story? Why, it’s EVERYTHING!
Red: This makes me wanna go back and read all the books with him in it to look at them in a new way. You know? If only I had unlimited time to read.
JL: I know exactly how you feel. I also want to go back and read every book that the cameos are in.
If you’ve read A Day Makes, the first book in this series, then you know that Darius has recently become the Vault. (What’s the Vault, you say? Well, I’m not gonna tell you. You’ll have to read the first book to find out.) With the new job comes a LOT of new responsibilities, but it also comes with a sense of freedom Darius hasn’t experienced in decades. He’s finally able to slow down a bit and just breathe.
JL: [SPOILERY SPOILER QUOTE THAT I’M NOT GONNA SPOIL.]Exactly how I would live my life if I could.
Red: Darius just handed [SPOIL NAME] the job of a lifetime and himself the golden ticket! He just needs the love of his life by his side. Ugh. I hope [EPIC ROMANTIC SPOILER OF SPOILS THAT DOES NOT NEED TO BE SPOILED!]
JL: I'm sure he will. Mary won't let us down. [QUOTES THAT ARE SPOILERS BUT QUOTES THAT WE THINK YOU WILL HIGHLIGHT TOO!]
He’s hand-picked his team and boy, there are some interesting characters among them! Some you will recognize from other books but there are a couple that are new. One in particular that I’m sure everyone will love as much as I do.
JL: I'm liking this [SHHH SPOILS IN A POT NEVER SPOIL]. He's very sassy.
Red: I haven't got to [SPOILSPORT SPOILER] yet. Just got to [A POSSIBLE SPOILER I WON’T SPOIL.]
JL: Ha! I highlighted that [SNARKY SPOILER] too!
This was like the culmination of all of the books Mary has written in this world. There were so many cameos and references to other stories that my head was spinning and I was constantly squealing in delight.
Red: Okay. I am stopping at [SPOILERING] Chapter [SPOILER]! LOL I can't stop reading. This is so good. But of course it is, right? But IT IS SO GOOD!
JL: SO GOOD!
I love playing six degrees of Kevin Bacon with Mary.
Red: I know! I honestly thought when [DOUBLE, DOUBLE, SPOIL AND TROUBLE] instead. I am still waiting to see if they show up.
And the banter in this book! OMG! I think this is the snarkiest book Mary has written to date. I was seriously LOLing throughout a majority of the story. It showed to me how much Mary has grown in her writing over the years.
JL: “Just because you’re the vault doesn’t make you good or any more likely not to go to hell.”“We’re carpooling, I’m aware.”
So snarky! I'm loving all the banter in this one.
But it’s not all fun and games in this book, no sir. There were parts that were so heartfelt, so emotional that I couldn’t help but sob into my pillow. Being alone for most of his life, Darius hasn’t been able to make the connections that are needed to keep one healthy and sane. He’s lonely but doesn’t really know how to go about fixing his problem. What makes it even harder to bear is that there was a time in his life that he wasn’t lonely. He knows what love is, he’s experienced it before, but it was ripped away from him in an instant that, while he doesn’t regret doing what he had to do to protect his love, he wishes would have happened differently.
JL: It had gone nothing like I’d thought it would. Never in my wildest dreams had I imagined that Efrem would [YOU DIDN’T SERIOUSLY THINK I WAS GONNA SPOIL THIS PART, DID YOU?]
Aaaaaand now I'm sad.
Red: I've highlighted those same parts! Listen to him. Ugh. I just realized while I was in corpse pose, Conrad is possibly the saddest MC MC (Mary Calmes Main Character) ever. He's so lonely giving up or lost everyone he's ever loved.
JL: I know. He's so lonely. I want to give him a hug.
Throughout his life, there has only been one person that made Darius feel alive. One person that made him think that being a human being on this planet was worth it. Efrem. They had five glorious years together before they were ripped from each other’s arms. Darius never got over Efrem. Sixteen years later and a chance encounter leaves Darius with a hope that he’s scared to feel. Will Efrem feel the same as he did all those long years ago? Is the love still there?
When you were moving at the speed of sound, being alone made sense, but as soon as the scenery outside the window became recognizable shapes instead of a steady blur, you longed for home. Efrem was the only home I had, and the constant ache in my chest was the yearning for him.
JL: Stupid book with stupid Efrem making me cry.
Red: I know! Where are you? I just started chapter [SPOILERING SPOILY STUFF.][...]I'm done. That. Was. Good. And. Romantic AF!
Thank you, Mary. Thank you for writing this book. It was everything I ever wished it could be. And the story’s not done! There is still a thread that hasn’t been resolved. I for one cannot wait to read the final book in this trilogy. It’s going to be EPIC, I just know it.
