Review: Heart 2 Heart: A Charity Anthology by Various Authors

Once upon a time, a bunch of M/M authors wondered… What if a dating app that guaranteed you a love match broke down just in time for Valentine’s Day? What if you found yourself on a blind date with a random guy who might be your opposite in every single way? It could be a disaster. Or… When the code breaks down, fate just might take over.

Eleven of your favorite gay romance authors have joined forces to light up your Valentine’s Day with a collection of sweet, sexy, silly, and hot short stories, featuring a wacky cast of characters chosen from your reader suggestions! Morticians and magicians, superheroes and spies, lawyers and lobstermen, will all learn that love has nothing to do with algorithms… and sometimes you find it in the least-likely places.

And the best part? All proceeds from this collection will go to the authors’ favorite LGBTQ charities, to ensure that love in all its incarnations will be celebrated and protected every single day of the year!

I absolutely LOVE anthologies and I always have one going in the background. They are great to fill in the gaps between books and get introduced to new-to-me authors. Heart2Heart: A Charity Anthology is extra special as the proceeds from the sales of this collection go to charities doing amazing work for the LBGTQ community; The Trevor Project, Bisexual Resource Centre and one-n-ten.

The theme of Heart2Heart is creative and gave the authors a lot of freedom to play and still keep a focus throughout so the stories flow from one to the next effortlessly. Heart2Heart is a dating app that goes sideways as you see with The Set-up and The Fallout, one story broken into two parts that sandwich the rest of the shorts perfectly. The glitches in the software pair up opposites rather than matches, so if you are an opposites attract theme fan, this anthology is going to feed that need.

The Set-up OR How Bailey the Geeky Programmer Lost his Focus
4 Hearts

Bailey is going through the last of the QA process before the Heart2Heart app launches when he gets distracted by the very, very delicious window washer outside his building. Everyone on his floor was checking the eye candy outside, but that hunk of a man only had eyes for Bailey. The flirtation was adorable and I could hardly blame Bailey for cutting his QA process short to go on the date of a lifetime.

Once the app goes live, the mismatches begin . . . .

The Professional Gamer and the Paranormal Photographer by Alison Hendricks
2 ½ Hearts

I liked the MCs separately but didn’t really get a feel for them as a potential couple. They spent a good chunk of time talking themselves out of liking one another and then just kind of decided to change their minds. There was no real reason, they both admitted that there wasn’t a ton of attraction between them. Once they decided to give one another a chance I did enjoy reading their conversations, but I was missing the piece that connected them, I was missing the “why”.

The Magician and the Mortician by A.E. Wasp
4 Hearts

This story was a treat to read. I’ve never read anything by this author before, but I really enjoyed the writing style and will be looking for more of her works. I wouldn’t classify these characters as opposites, but they did happen to come together at the perfect time, when each of them really could appreciate the other. Alberto and Mikey were completely charming separately and together it was multiplied exponentially. Mikey’s sense of wonder was utterly adorable and I loved reading Alberto falling in love with Mikey’s qualities.

The Assassin and the Dog Walker by Charlie Cochet
3 ½ Hearts

The characters made this one for me but I think there was just a little too much going on for a short story. A little less OTT and a little more character focus would have bumped this one up at least a full star for me. The humor is well done and well timed throughout and I absolutely could see Lymond and Daniel together. I didn’t really get the need for the jealous ex-boyfriend thing, it didn’t really need to be a thing to make this story.

The Criminal and the Sommelier by Chris Owen
2 ½ Hearts

I really enjoyed the writing in this short story, but it definitely felt like I was reading a snippet of a bigger tale and not a fully fleshed out story. I don’t need to have every detail, but this one felt like it was missing just enough to leave me wanting. The ending was too abrupt for me to have a feel for the MC’s as a potential couple, but I would definitely be interested in reading this one if it were to be turned into a novella at least.

The Superhero and the NSA Agent by Hailey Turner
3 ½ Hearts

Shane and Damian were perfect for one another and I really liked their setup. The story was a little rushed, but I still could sense the connection between the two and believe in an HEA for them. I loved the banter between the two of them once they were getting to know one another and I’ve gotta love and MC who cosplays for kids in the hospital. It’s no wonder Shane swooned so hard so fact.

The Tattoo Artist and the Writer by Lily Morton
5 Hearts

This story was the most absolute swoon worthy treat and I ate up every word of this friends to lovers tale. I was ready for a character driven story by about now and Lily Morton delivered in spades. Noah and Sage had been friends since they were kids and the flashbacks cemented their connection. Heart2Heart was the jumpstart they needed to admit their feelings and the dates they went on were so personal and sweet, I just can’t even with the adorable that was all over this one.

The Uber Driver and the Phone Sex Operator by Lucy Lennox
4 ½ Hearts

The title is misleading to the characters and I appreciated the depth the author was able to get to with these characters in the span of a short story. The title is a description of their first meeting, but there was so much more to both of them and as the story progressed it was obvious Travis and Azrael had to be together. The age gap could’ve had the potential for angst, but the author didn’t go there too hard, so it read realistically and not OTT. I was fully on board with their HEA when it came and I’ll be looking for more from this author too.

The Baker and the SEAL by May Archer
4 ½ Hearts

Oh hell, the setup here was beyond delicious. One MC is a mountain of man, a SEAL who is charming as they come, witty and a big ‘ol bottom. The other MC is a snarky, slightly cantankerous toppy ginger who bakes dreamy desserts in a small town that has become the focus of destination weddings. Their first meeting led to some low key flirting, but a misunderstanding derailed them for a brief time until the lightbulb went on and then after some good natured chuckling it was all forward movement for Cal and Ash. These two were one of my favorite couples and I’ll be looking for more May Archer tales.

The Event Planner and the Electrician by Poppy Denison
4 Hearts

This story was cute as hell and the humor was spot on for the characters. Theo and Harvey were opposites who attracted (and appreciated) and I think that’s where the story appealed to me the most. I liked reading about how much they were attracted to one another because of their differences and Harvey was so shyly charming in contract with Theo’s vibrant color. These two just made me happy together and their story fit them well.

The Lawyer and the Lobsterman by Ruthie Luhnow
3 ½ Hearts

I honestly didn’t have hope for Isaac and Will, but the author changed my mind over the course of the story. Kudos to Isaac for giving the date a chance. He was such a fussy treat I couldn’t help but root for the two of them. Will was OTT with the casually and charmingly obnoxious, but I think he had to be that way to get Isaac to play along. It ended pretty unresolved but that was more realistic than an HEA for them. An optimistic HFN would have been appreciated though, but in my head there is one for them.

The Florist and the Lawyer by Sloane Kennedy
4 Hearts

Harrison was a real dick at the beginning of the story and man is he lucky he got paired up with Nate who is the biggest sweetheart on the planet. Not many other people would have given him a second chance, but Nate is empathy personified and Harrison’s tale of heartbreak brought out all of Nate’s caregiving instincts. Harrison was smart enough to see the potential for happiness with Nate and I’m so glad he was able to see past his own hurt to hope for some future happiness with Nate. The fact that Harrison appreciated Nate for who he was made me forgive his early dickishness pretty quickly and their HEA was perfect for them.

The Fallout
4 Hearts (continuation of The Set-up)

After Bailey returns to work from the epic date to end all dates with Ryder and learns that the little glitch he left behind in the app created what they were all afraid would be catastrophic matches he worked his tail off to get it fixed. He feared for his job and just felt absolutely terrible for the mess. He had no regrets when it came to Ryder though and Ryder was the hero Bailey needed to get through the next couple of days. The whole anthology ends with HEA’s all around and I loved every word of it.

The Magician and the Mortician

Can you tell us a little bit about your characters?
Alberto (42) is a jaded magician who hasn't had any magic in his life since his long-time partner died five years ago. Mikey (29) is a mortician who finds magic and meaning in life through his work with the dead and their families.

Was writing this story easy for you to do? Or was it a little bit outside of your normal writing zone?

Writing is never easy for me, but once I realized why the characters were perfect for each other, the story happened. Writing a short is difficult for me. I tend to write long.

What were some of the reader submissions that stood out to you, and why?
I was happy to see one person mention a Native American man and someone with Asperger's. The only reason I didn't do that was that I felt I would need a longer story to do it justice. And a 'heartbreakingly beautiful assassin' that I really want to write one day.

Since the anthology is only available for a limited time, (90 days) do you have any plans for your story after that?
I expect these guys to make an appearance in a new project that May and I are working on for the fall!

What do you think of the line-up of authors? How does it feel to be in such great company?
I am fangirling like crazy! It's a dream line up, and I am so impressed with how genuinely wonderful everyone has been. It really made me want to write the best story I could.

Other than your own, do you have a favorite story (or two) in the anthology?

That's so mean to make me pick.

Have you ever set someone else up on a blind date? If yes, how did it turn out?
I didn't, BUT, a long time ago, pre-1994, I did have a guy friend over, and one of my girlfriends dropped by. When she left, Pete said, "I'm going to marry that girl." And he did, and they are still married. So I know the things we write about can happen!

If Heart2Heart were to match you with someone, who do you think you'd get paired with?
OMG. Are we talking functioning app or the wonky one we wrote about? Whoever it is, they'd better know what they're getting into dating a writer, and someone who will call me on my crap. Stockard Channing? That would be nice.

Is there anything else that you think would be fun to talk about?

I love to hear everyone's worst and/or best dating experiences.

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT

It wasn’t until Mikey turned to thank the waitress that Alberto felt like he could exhale. How was this man real? Maybe he was having a hallucination.

He should probably tell himself to slow down, get himself together, but he had zero desire to do so. He wanted to know everything about Mikey. He wanted to meet his family and talk to them about life and death. He wanted to go on long car rides across the country and visit the World’s Biggest Ball of Twine, or Carhenge, or anything.

Never in a million years had he ever thought he would meet someone so fascinating and he was going to carpe the hell out of this diem. Noctis? Nocturn? What was the Latin for night? Whatever. It didn’t matter. He was going to seize it all. All of Mikey’s days, nights, afternoons, mornings, and evenings.

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, could this be love at first sight? Was that actually a thing? If it was, how terrifying would that be?

He took his salmon with the barest of thanks, paralyzed by the thoughts in his head.

“So what made you want to be a professional magician?” Mikey asked him. “Besides the fact that it’s super cool, obviously.”

Okay. He could answer that. Small talk. This was good. Normal for a first date. “My abuelo was an amateur magician. He owned a magic shop that I more or less grew up in. I thought he was the greatest guy.”

“How about your father? Is he into magic, too? Is it your family business?” Mikey’s eyes lit up, and he groaned as he took a bite of his steak. “Oh, my god, this is so good.”

Alberto shifted in his seat as Mikey’s groan went right to his cock. “No, my dad is definitely not into magic. He’s an engineer. He was so disappointed when I didn’t go to college. But he grew up pretty poor, and he just didn’t want his kids growing up like that.”

“Kids? Do you have brothers and sisters?”

“One brother, eleven months younger than I am. Freddy is an engineer. And straight and has already provided grandkids, to my mother’s delight. Though she’s always open for more.” Alberto smiled. Luckily, he and Freddy got along great. Freddy was Alberto’s biggest fan, and Alberto doted on his three nieces.

“Did you ever want kids?” Mikey asked, toying with his sautéed string beans.

Truth or what he thought Mikey wanted to hear? Truth. Easier to deal with. “No. Not really. I like being an uncle well enough.”

Mikey sighed and sagged in his chair. “Oh thank god. I don’t either. I feel like gaybies are the newest fashion trend. Seems like every guy I date wants a baseball team of them, and they look at me like I’m a monster when I say I never wanted kids.”

“Let’s toast to a kid-free future, then.” Alberto tapped his wine glass against Mikey’s.

“Glad that’s out of the way,” Mikey said almost to himself as he cut more steak.

The feathered thing in Alberto’s heart fluttered. Mikey was thinking about the future, too. He might be crazy, but at least he wasn’t alone.

Audiobook Review: Deviations: Submission by Chris Owen & Jodi Payne

Tobias is a skilled Dom, able to bring even the most hesitant submissive around. Noah is a man in need of just that. He wants to sub badly but has yet to find someone he believes can take him where he needs to go.

Through a series of encounters in the world of bondage and discipline, Noah reveals why he has trouble trusting, why he needs such a firm, steady hand. Tobias may allow himself to dominate, but he has trouble letting himself love. Still, Tobias can't resist Noah's charms, and the two of them set about making a scene for themselves, one that works for them and their unique set of problems. They learn to love, but can they stay together while they explore each other's secrets in a world where all is laid bare and emotions run high?

From authors Chris Owen, writer of the popular Bareback, and Jodi Payne, writer of String of Pearls, comes a romance on the deviant side, where love is all tied up with the need to submit, the need to dominate, and the need to share a life of exploration and care. These two skilled authors create a world that's hard to resist and a book that's even harder to pause.

Reviewer - Annery

From the age of eight and until very recently I always had dogs among my pets. A ragtag collection of mutts of different sizes very dear to me. Besides teaching them to stay, not bark like lunatics for no reason, and let me know when they “had to go” I never felt compelled to teach them any tricks of the roll-over-give-me-your-paw variety. Couldn’t see the point of it … I loved and enjoyed them without the extras but I do like to walk the talk so if formal BDSM gets your jollies going I want to understand on some level and so I read BDSM books. The ones with Doms and Masters and Subs wanting to be claimed. The ones with clubs, dungeons, St. Andrew’s Crosses, scenes, safe words, people being called Master/Sir and others being called ‘boy’ or ‘pet’ being trained to ‘walk to heel’, kneel, keep their eyes low, and do things like ‘present’ etc. I get the Subs and love them. The Doms are another story. I waver between hating them for being sadistic a#%holes (no matter that the Subs enjoy the pain/humiliation/service) and wondering why someone would want the responsibility of being someone else’s everything. Other D/s books, the informal “here’s a belt, let’s use this to tie you up” variety have my number on speed dial. This was research. That’s my story.

I did the audio for “Submission”, the first in the Deviations Series, narrated by Maxx Power and while he didn’t bowl me over I didn’t hate it. As a narrator he’s very good with precise and clear diction and well marked differentiation between character voices … perhaps a little clinical in tone? I don’t know. It works well for this type of BDSM story. My hiccup came with the voice he does for Noah when Noah is in his submissive role. To my ears he sounds almost a bit childish but a fake childish. Kind of like a faux innocent voice but then maybe I’m just being fastidious. I’d say give it a go. You’ll be entertained because the story itself is good. I’d recommend it.

“Submission” is the first in a five book series which chronicles a BDSM relationship from its inception. It falls within what I’ve coined the FSOG progeny and I in no way mean that as a slur and I can confidently say that this book surpases FSOG by leaps and bounds. The writing is good and neither MC is a shy innocent virgin or under 30 Master of The Universe. Still some of the conventions have been kept.

Noah is cop by day submissive nights and weekends. After some pretty bad experiences has been coming to a certain BDSM club where everyone knows your name, think Cheers but with dungeons and adult playrooms, in the hopes of finding a Dom or Master to take him on and satisfy some deep-seated needs. What these needs are remains a bit vague apart from the general “let another shoulder all responsibility while controlling me for my own good” variety. I suppose more will be explored/revealed in future books and I’m a pretty patient reader.

Dr. Tobias Vincent is a veterinarian, of the farm animal variety, by day and Dom extraordinaire during his off hours. It’s almost like a super-hero with his civilian persona and of course he has money which allows for all the toys. And I mean ALL THE TOYS. Lets just say there’s a former horse stable full of modified stalls.

Tobias and Noah are set up by Bradford, the manager of The Club, who also apparently functions as a matchmaker for BDSM couples, and they hit the ground running.

I liked it very much. I liked that though the authors don’t do a primer per se for BDSM newbies you could be a total babe in the woods and understand what the the dynamics are. Primarily this is because Noah himself though a submissive seems to be confused as to what that is or why he needs it. Thankfully Master Tobias is here to pick up the slack and clarify:

“You know,” Tobias said easily, “I firmly believe that regular discipline lessens the need for punishment.” Another snap and the two lines were neatly connected. “But then, punishment is often a rewarding experience. What do you think?”

Noah hunched his shoulders and then flexed them. He puffed out air with a rough sound and cleared his throat. “Punishment is about learning from mistakes, discipline is about learning not to make them,” he said quickly. It was obviously a phrase he’d studied carefully at some point. He took two quick breaths, held them a moment, and when he exhaled he relaxed somewhat.

“I’ll accept the first, not the second.” Tobias laid a fourth stroke on Noah’s back and stepped close, pressing one finger into him and slowly thrusting back and forth. Noah groaned. “Oh, God.” His head dropped forward.
“Mistakes are allowed, made up for, and forgiven. Discipline lets you know yourself, lets you gain strength.”

I liked how the relationship between Tobias and Noah develops with each scene they have and also outside interactions. I was mightily relieved to see Tobias start to need/crave Noah. To have doubts and need reassurance. In the beginning it seemed like Tobias was the messiah complete with the walking on water bit and I was so not up for that. Big relief.

I liked that though both have issues due to previous fraught relationships they seem willing and ready to try something new and see where it goes. There was none of this “my heart is closed” BS. I liked their ages and that they behaved like people who are not sixteen. I liked the side characters, Mrs. Miller, Bradford, and Brett. Phan … I may need to warm up to but I’m sure he’ll figure prominently in the next books. I liked that no avowals of true love are blurted out due to magic dick. The seeds are sowed for a future HEA but it ends in a satisfying HFN. This is really a perfect set-up chapter for the series and I’ll definitely be reading the next installments.

Review: Never Too Early: Finding Their Way (Never Too Early #2) by Chris Owen & Tory Temple

Continuing from the first book in the series (Never Too Early: The Beginning), Chance and Tucker and Jake and Tor find themselves involved in a friendship that goes much deeper than any of them initially suspected.

Jake has been released from the hospital following his fall from the roof, and Chance and Tucker agree to stay in Arkansas for several days to help Tor with Jake's care. Chance, however, spends much of his time trying to resist the growing attraction he has for Jake. The confusion between the love he has for Tucker and the new feelings for Jake play tricks with Chance's mind. Is any of this a good idea, or are all of them headed for disaster?

For his part, Jake has to reconcile not only his growing feelings and physical attraction to Chance, but also the promises he and Tor made to each other. They rebuilt their own relationship in the wake of mistakes neither one of them wishes to repeat. How much communication and longing can one -- or two -- relationships take?

First things first, there were no apple orchard shenanigans!

Words cannot express how shocked I am by this. In fact, the sexy times were few and far between period. Now, I don't know about Chance and Tucker since I didn't read the first book of this series, but Tor and Jake boinked like bunnies in Bareback. Here they're more like friends or maybe Jake's just worn down by Tor's childishness.

There was some buttsex and it was hot, but it was mostly mutual masturbation and longing, though I did dig the voyeurism kink and the hints of bossiness.

I found the LEGO thing endearing in Bareback and the scene was cute here, but the immaturity on display by both Tor and Tucker was annoying. They wrestle, are loud and rambunctious and then the picking a fight because reasons was too much for me. Jake and Chance, on the other hand, are bound for the retirement community any day now. It's a wonder the original two couples are still coupling at all given the disparity in their personalities and, seemingly, interests.

I enjoy polyamorous stories. I do. What I like about them is all parties involved being hot for one another. That didn't happen here. The couples essentially pick new partners and pair off rather than becoming a cohesive unit. On the one hand, I have a hard time believing there weren't more hurt feels involved in this process, on the other hand maybe the couples have simply grown apart and it's time for a change so this "polyamorous" one is a pit stop to Splitsville.

I read this without having read the previous installment and had no trouble picking up the thread of the storyline. I can take an educated guess as to where the story is headed, but this didn't interest me enough to continue to the next one. I found the story dull and the writing prosaic.

Recommend to die hard fans of Tor and Jake or Chance and Tucker.

Blurb:
When Jake Taggart fell from the roof of his barn, Tor had only one thought -- to reach out to Chance Shanahan and Tucker McBride for support. In this follow-up to Never Too Early: The Beginning, the first book in the Cowboy/Firefighter series, the two couples are reunited in their mutual concern for Jake. But how far will that concern go?

A strong friendship begins to explore the boundaries of something else; something all four men never looked for or expected. Emotions and attraction are difficult to deny, try as they might, but giving in has the potential to destroy everything both couples have worked so hard for. Excerpt:

Jake reached out and touched the back of Chance's hand. "Thank you for coming all this way to be with me. Thank you for coming to sit next to me, and for helping Tor. Thank you for everything you and Tucker have done around here, but mostly thank you for being someone I can count on." Jake nodded firmly and looked up into Chance's face, studying his eyes. "Thanks for caring so much."

Chance's gaze was steady and direct. "I didn't mean to," he said quietly. "I thought you were a good guy, that's all. I thought you were nice and funny and smart and easy to talk to. I didn't mean for there to be more than that."

Jake nodded. "I know. We all know. But there is, and I'm okay with that. Thankful for it, really. And so is Tor. And Tucker sent me upstairs to talk to you, and said not to let you overthink it." He smiled, trying not to shake with nerves. "So sit down here next to me and stop thinking."

About the authors:

Chris Owen: I live and write in eastern Canada.  I went to a bunch of schools, learned a lot of things, and now make stuff up because not to do so is unthinkable. I'm fond of fountain pens, Levenger's Circa system, and Steampunk fashions. Lately I've been watching a lot of Discovery channel. I've seen every episode of CSI Las Vegas and New York, but I'm not terribly keen on CSI Miami. It might be due to weather envy. I have a crush on the whole cast of Criminal Minds, and fondness for wool. The two are not related. Hoarders keeps me honest. I'm inspired by the day to day minutia of life, and find beauty in the way words go together. I like texture and richness of experience. I'm not shy. I'm happy, I'm learning, I'm living.

Tory Temple: Tory lives and works in southern California, where she spends a lot of time around firemen. She visits the beach frequently and wears flip flops even in the winter. Tory likes television, salted pistachios in the shell, and chenille socks. She dislikes cauliflower, not being able to find the right shoes in the morning, and not having enough free time. She shares her space with numerous pets, including but not limited to cats, dogs, and tortoises.
