Review: Safe and Sound by Caitlin Ricci

Twenty-one-year-old Mason has to get out of his mother’s house, where her boyfriend subjects him to unwanted advances—and won’t take no for an answer. Since she didn’t believe Mason when he told her about his uncle’s sexual abuse, Mason knows he’s on his own, and it’s up to him to raise the money he needs. He thinks he’s in luck when he takes a modeling job.

Oliver is a photographer, and getting guys and sex has always been easy for him. His current open relationship is no exception: more friendship and fun than anything. But when Oliver meets Mason, he can see the younger man is fragile and desperately in need of help. Before anything can develop between them, Mason needs to free himself of his terrible living situation and start on the road to healing. Oliver wants to stand beside him as he does. What surprises him is the discovery that he might need Mason as much as Mason needs him.

Mason is having a hard time. His step-father seems to take every opportunity to make him feel uncomfortable while his mother is out of the house, and Mason doesn’t think she would believe him about it if he said anything. Mason needs money so he can escape his step-father and Oliver is hiring models for his stock image portfolio.

Oliver is a photographer who doesn’t say no to the easy access to naked bodies in his photography studio, but does take no for an answer when his advances are rejected.

To be honest, this was pretty cliche. The older photographer finds the shy new boy endearing enough to test the waters but realises there is some damage and decides to take a different approach. Mason is inexperienced, frightened, and just wants to get away from predatory men.

I know Oliver is not supposed to present as a predator but to be completely honest it sure seemed that way to me. He was open about his interest, but in the beginning it was just about sex and since the reader already knows that something is up with Mason, it is off putting the way Oliver approached him.

There was also a scenario that was unacceptable to me, which really got my back up. Putting an abuse survivor in a risky situation is just not on in my opinion. I actually couldn’t believe it was written into the story. I wish it wasn’t in there and the plot was written with a different scenario.

I will say that Mason and Oliver developed a close relationship, and I felt they connected well after the whole hire a model and if he’s hot I’ll sleep with him part. That was tacky and I really didn’t like it. But after my initial revulsion I did come to like Oliver. I don’t know what that says about me. He seemed somewhat redeemed.

I liked his relationship with his boyfriend. I think it was the most honest out of the entire story. I could have enjoyed the story more if it was between them and Mason.

So my overall feelings were that this is a bit of a minefield. Mason is a sexual abuse survivor and I didn’t get the feeling that Oliver was right in the way he handled everything. By the end, I didn’t hate Oliver, and Mason was a sweetheart who needed the room to be away from abusers and start to heal.

Reborn by Brooklyn Ray

Thalia Darbonne left Port Lewis three years ago with no intention of returning. Despite being a powerful witch, she’s now known as a deserter – an outcast in the magical society. But after her mother’s untimely death, Thalia is called back to her hometown in order to fulfill her duty as matriarch, and take the place as head witch of the Darbonne Clan.

Being back home isn’t easy, especially when Thalia is confronted by a ghost from her past, the beautiful, dangerous necromancer, Jordan Wolfe.

As Thalia tries to cope with the loss of her mother, she’s also faced with her feelings for Jordan, the responsibility of becoming matriarch, and the strange, dark magic lingering between her and her first love. Thalia and Jordan fight through three years of confusion in the forest they grew up in, where trees whisper, the night sky bleeds, and sigils are carved into flesh.

Zero Hour by J.C. Long

After being bitten by her long-time girlfriend Robbin in werewolf form, Simone does the only thing she can think to do—she gets in her car and drives as far away as she can. As the first full moon since she was bitten approaches, Simone is faced with a difficult choice: does she trust Robbin, who wishes to guide her through her first transformation, after being hurt by her? And more importantly, with the full moon drawing near, does she really have a choice?

Dove in the Window by Kara Race-Moore

More and more people from the local cemetery are crawling from their graves because something won’t let them rest. Cissy has to find out how to fix it, even if that means asking Death himself for advice.

Bottom of the River by Samantha Kate

Anja Bauer is the daughter of rich but cruel parents who care little about her happiness. Despite her revulsion toward men, they plan to marry her off to a faraway suitor. But Anja’s discovers a contract they signed with the demon they’d warned her about, and she learns the true extent of their wickedness and the reality of the demon.

If You Want to Walk by Nicole Field

Chess runs into the world of the Fae to try to escape her depression, only to find it comes there with her. When she finds her way back, she knows she will have to leave many things behind. Is leaving worth that price?

A Tended Garden by J.P Jackson

Alyssa is a natural witch whose thoughts have a way of coming true. Her coven is the only one around—well, the only one she’ll practice her beliefs with – but her high priestess, Rachel, is particularly difficult to please.

Rachel has a secret she hasn’t told anyone in her coven—one that her ancestral witches before her kept from their covens too. If Rachel’s to hold on to her traditions and the immortality she’s been promised, she’ll have to keep the women in her coven returning to the sacred grove, and that includes Alyssa.

But secrets have a way of being revealed, and when Alyssa stumbles across Rachel’s violent and horrifying history with the trees of the grove, the pact between the sacred grove and Rachel’s family may have a price too steep to pay.

Romancing the Healer by Caitlin Ricci

When she takes too long to come back to her pack, Aria is caught up in a snowstorm. To make matters worse, she’s twisted her ankle while running. Hurt, freezing, and alone, her best chance for survival is to stay under an evergreen until the storm clears then try to limp back to her pack. Zoe has a better idea. She’s a healer without a pack to call her own, although she’s desperate for the kind of family Aria has with hers. Being trans, Zoe has never felt all that welcome with other shifters, but Aria promises to show her that there is at least one pack who would gladly have her. All they have to do is wait out the storm together.

Midnight Kisses by L.J. Hamlin

A night out in a bar before a big council meeting to relax seems like a good idea, talking to the cute werewolf at the bar seems like a better idea. But when they meet again will sparks get in the way.

Like a Bell through the Night by Kayla Bashe

Rhiannon, faerie princess in exile, has been on the run for her entire life. Hunted by her most dangerous enemy yet, she turns to her childhood crush for help: immortal, smolderingly sexy werewolf Jaffa Volkovitch.

Jaffa’s scars and secrets haunt her, and she doesn’t let anyone get close. She remembers Rhiannon as an optimistic child… not an alluring, resilient young woman whose every touch awakens forgotten feelings. Keeping up her emotional barriers could mean breaking Rhiannon’s heart. What will Jaffa decide?

The Imp in the Rock by Charli Coty

It’s been years since she’s been with a woman, but when the beautiful Hanako reveals her true nature, Wendi doesn’t let either detail keep her from the most magical and steamy night she’s ever had.

Smile Like You Mean It by Tay LaRoi

Reborn by Brooklyn Ray

Night skies bleed. She’d known that all her life, from the time she was a girl, climbing onto the roof to look at the stars, to now, walking on cold misty streets in a town she’d never considered coming back to. Thalia’s chin tipped up, dark skin highlighted by streetlamps and the glow of cracked movie theater signs. She studied the November sky, tracing the blurred pinpricks where stars peeked through fog and deep navy collided seamlessly with pitch-black. Everything dripped—moonlight into the nether, starlight into the horizon.
Look, Thalia, watch time cut it open. The sun would sink and Thalia would wait. The night bleeds and we’re reborn. Once the sun was behind the distant mountain range, Thalia and her family would set off into the woods. The stars and moon would bleed white and gold, and the witches of Port Lewis would mirror the act above by spilling blood below.
Thalia’s hands had been clean for three years. She didn’t intend to dirty them again.
A buzz vibrated the front pocket of her black jacket. She stopped to lean against the brick wall of a familiar pizza parlor and pulled out her phone. “Christ,” she bit, wincing when the bright screen flashed in her eyes. Her gaze fell over one message after the next, the first from her brother, the second from her aunt, and the third from her father.
Every message said the same thing in varying tones.
Your mother is dead, Thalia. You’re the next matriarch. Come home.
Thalia had been reading the same texts for a week now. The Darbonne Witches were without a leader, and a clan without a leader would fall apart within a year. But Thalia Darbonne wasn’t any witch—she was a deserter, a stain on the reputable name her family had carried for generations.
Nights like these, when the sky bled and the fog was thick, Thalia remembered magic.
She felt it echo in her veins, a whisper of heat, a weighty soreness that felt brittle under her skin.
Nights like these reminded her that magic was a terrifying, savage thing.
Her thumbs hovered over the screen. She typed a message to her brother, backspaced it, tried again, line after line after line, and backspaced everything she’d written for the second time.
She settled on two words. I’m here.
Thalia hit send. As soon as she saw Luther had read the text, she slid her phone back into her jacket pocket and looked back up at the sky. Magic stirred within her, jostled awake by her hometown, her mother’s untimely death, and by something else. A familiarity. A distinct shift in the air, odd and transparent, like a switch had been flipped and the lights dimmed, water ran the wrong way, things were unmade.
Somehow, the night recognized the collision of energies before she did. The natural magic in the air shuddered and retreated, urging her to do the same.
But Thalia knew this darkness. She’d had it etched into her skin. She’d worn it under her clothes. She’d let it slither down her throat.
“I felt you a mile away.” Her voice hadn’t changed any. It carried the same rasp, the same quiet wisp. “What’s a Darbonne runaway like you doing in a soggy town like this?”
Thalia remembered the shape of Jordan’s lips, too full on the bottom, too bowed on the top. She remembered her small chin, the cliff of her cheekbones, the prominent angles of her face. They hadn’t softened over time, but her brows were thinner now, higher, and there was a ring through her left nostril. Her hair was still shoulder-length and ashy, the blonde people paid to get rid of at a salon, with loose waves created by coastal air.
“My mom died,” Thalia said because small talk was for people who didn’t kill to appease their lineage, or steal magic to raise the dead. “They want me back.”
“They could’ve asked me,” Jordan purred. The uncomfortable truth of her practice made Thalia’s guts twist. “All I need is a body and an invocation.”
Thalia’s head listed to the side; her arms crossed over her chest. The knot low in her abdomen worked in tandem with the heat rising into her cheeks. Nervousness battled with disregard. Desire fractured the eaves in her mind where Jordan’s low voice dusted old memories.
“Why’d you come find me?” Thalia shifted. The click of her ankle boots ricocheted off the alley walls behind the pizza parlor. She felt Jordan’s sharp gaze on her face, the rake of it down her neck, past the silver chain between her collarbones, to her torso. “You know what happened, Jordan. This town’s too small to get something like a Darbonne death past you.”
“Death never gets past me.” Jordan’s dark, slate eyes caught Thalia’s flighty gaze. “You know that.”
Each word stretched open, filled with purpose and warmth. No matter how many years had gone by, Thalia couldn’t shake the soft brush of Jordan’s magic against her own. Unnatural meeting natural, a drop of blood in a clear lake, a clawed hand wrapped around the stem of a flower.

Let me just tell you how much excite I had when I heard there was going to be a whole book devoted to MANTIES!

Even though I don't care for anthologies, the MANTIES will not be denied!

WOOF!

Without further ado... my feels. And some NSFW pics.

A Linebacker in Lace by Caitlin Ricci - 2 Hearts

Super rushed. The dialogue's stilted and this "relationship" moves at lightning speed riiiiiight into instalove land. A decent attempt was made to flesh out the characters, but by and large it was a dud; they're still 2D.

Brent is a former football player with a penchant for lace. He meets Arliss at a bar who informs him that his lace is on display. Three whole dates later they're in luuuuubbbb.

There was very little for me to grasp onto and I'm not a fan of MANTIES wearers feeling shame about said MANTIES wearing so that was a strike against it for me. Also, Arliss works for his sister in her men's lingerie shop, but he seemed inordinately invested in Brent broadening his MANTIES horizons. He straddles the line between supportive and pushy. And it was awkward.

I could actually connect with Arliss on the Power of the MANTIES making one slightly cray but I would've thought during the one sex scene the MANTIES would've played a larger role. Perhaps that's my deviance talking.

Satin Secrets by CL Mustafic - 4 Hearts

I really liked this story. Mustafic developed a tangible connection between the protagonists. They clearly have chemistry and I got good sense of them as characters.

I'm a fan of this kink too. Not just the MANTIES one either. There was some shame over the MANTIES wearing but it seemed to be quickly assuaged.

Sorry this is 16 different kinds of vague but if I say anything more than it's basically a scene between the protagonists, it'll ruin it for everyone. I will say I'm looking forward to reading the novel by this author.

Backwards and in High Heels by Elizabeth Coldwell - 2.5 Hearts

Likable but dry. Billie and Oliver are an established couple and while Oliver's on a work trip to Europe Billie decides to learn some ballroom dances to surprise him. I liked that he's a man on a mission to go all out for his man, complete with a dress and kitten heels as well as the requisite MANTIES.

Billie's a bit of nervous Nelly who struggles with excessive worry over how he's perceived by others and that got a little old, though it did give me a sense of him quickly.

Bottom line, I like the idea of this story more than the execution of it. It needed some oomph or a hook or maybe a gut punch to make me invest in this slice of life tale.

I did like the hall sex and the incorporation of the MANTIES into it. Nothing says passion like ripped panties. *eyebrows*

Angels in Delaware by Sita Bethel - 3 Hearts

One word-HEAVY.

This is the heaviest of the anthology, tackling homophobia and its ripple effect destructiveness.

Angel and Delaware are an established couple looking to add another and have not had much success until they meet Beau at a club one night. Delaware is gender fluid and prefers dresses most of the time whereas Angel leans more femme with guyliner and frequently highlights. Beau's attracted to them, both of them. They're attracted to Beau so BOW CHICKA WOW WOW.

Their chemistry comes through as a triad and kudos to Bethel for not utilizing the instalove trope. The narrative skirted the preachy line and there were too many tedious details. One thing that niggled was this undercurrent of seemingly derisive attitudes towards casual sex. I get that it's not for everyone, but by the same token, I don't care for negatronic attitudes nor judgeyness towards those who partake either.

Overall, this story struck me as a diamond in the rough and with a little polishing/experience in the writing game will likely improve.

Nevertheless, I bought into the HFN of this triad and appreciated the amount of relationship development Bethel brought to the story as well as the fact that Delaware has zero fucks to give about what other people think of how he dresses. I liked that a lot.

All That Entails by E.M. Hamill - 4.5 Hearts

Lovely! My favorite of the anthology.

This is a fantasy story with an admirable amount of worldbuilding and relationship development between Henry and Darian. Henry is trans F2M who was allowed to be a tomboy up until puberty. He's got a supportive twin brother but his father is cruel. Very cruel. Henry is headstrong and maybe a bit stubborn, but he gives in and becomes Prince Darian's bride even though he hates gowns and corsets and heels.

As luck would have it, he and Darian met at a masked ball once and Darian left an impression.

Darian is gender fluid but leans more femme. All the things Henry despises Darian adores. He's also bisexual but expected to marry well to fill his kingdom's coffers. Never let it be said that serendipity isn't serendipitous. And that dress scene... ALL THE FEELS! SO SWEET!

The writing is strong with well drawn characters that are relatable and likable. This isn't necessarily a romance, more the genesis of something that could turn into something more. What made me uneasy were the pronouns. Every time Henry was misgendered, I winced.

I will definitely be on the lookout for more stories by this author.

After the Dance by Sydney Blackburn - 4 Hearts

This story is so ding dang cute I want to hug it! I'm not sure when or where it's set but it has a very early 1900s vibe to it with the dialogue, attitudes and its chasteness.

Frank is a mechanic and has a crush the size of Montana on Charles Quinn, son of the owner of Dominion Air, where he works. He is a shy fellow who blushes frequently-something I found charming-and is a man of few words.

Charles is very dashing but being from money he's expected to marry well. To that end, his parents have notified him of an upcoming ball they've arranged wherein he's expected to choose a bride. Trouble is he's pining for Frank. Ahhhhh, unrequited love. Is there anything sweeter? Answer-yes! When there's cross-dressing involved!

I got the sense that Frank is lean with delicate bone structure and pretty. That he can easily fool others about his gender when he's all dolled up which leads to a very sweet HEA. Super sweet. I *may* have floated around on the sugar high for a minute. Or two.

I almost immediately invested into this relationship and these characters. The building of tension between them was admirable given the story's length. My one wish is that the worldbuilding had been better developed and more succinct with more details about the characters, but that would've probably pushed it out of short story range. Overall it was incredibly sweet, made me AWWWWWW and I didn't want it to end.

A Secret Shared by C.A. Blocke - 3 Hearts

There is a lot of potential in this story. I immediately zeroed in on the nerd/jock trope and *might* have bounced a lil bit when it came out that Tommy, the big, muscle-bound jock was the one into MANTIES. *squeak* One of my many kinks is size difference and when the big guy begged to bottom... Good gravy! *stumbles*
*drools*
*chokes a tiny bit*

So many things to like including realistic dialogue but it needed time to percolate to get me to invest in the romance between Tommy and Michael. They are an established couple who are keeping their relaysh on the DL, because QB of the football team, but I've no idea how long they've been together.

"A Shared Secret" is really more of scene between the two, a sexy scene to be certain, but there's not enough meat on it for me to connect with them, though I did have a huge grin on my face at how accepting Michael is of Tommy's desire to delve deeper into his MANTIES fetish. Man after my own heart, he is.

I'd love to see what this author could do with a full length novel.

Ruffle My Feathers by Asta Idonea - 1.5 Hearts

Oof! I didn't care for this one at all, I'm sorry to say. I've read some of this author's work in the past and enjoyed it so I'm hoping this is just a fluke.

Barrett is a construction worker by day and a drag queen on the weekends. It's his escape and a tightly kept secret and it, among other things, causes him much angst. Keith, after years of living in the closet, decides to hit the drag bar. Because reasons.

Lookit, I get that it's a short story and the inherent limitations contained therein, so I can't understand why SO MUCH time was wasted on minute details. I'm familiar with the mechanics of driving a car and opening a bottle. Those were wasted page time, IMO. Furthermore, there's nothing to differentiate these characters from one another, no depth, though they both have some serious angst over... everything. But the straw that broke the Cupcake's back was why these two are even together. Because they're both gay and work together? That's not enough for me. Not near enough.

I did like that they were accepted by their peers, rendering most of their angst pointless, but I'm sure they'll find something else to angst over soon enough.

There were continuity errors and silly editing mistakes in several of the stories and like every anthology I've ever read there were gems and duds. However, if you're a fan of MANTIES, non-binary or cross-dressing then you should give Beneath the Layers a try.

Review: College Discipline by Caitlin Ricci

Four stories of sex, romance, and college boys learning to kneel.

Hitachi is a police officer reduced to being a glorified babysitter for a rich man’s son. He resents his assignment, but Gabriel isn’t the brat Hitachi believes he is. He’s a man who likes pain, and who wants Hitachi to let loose with him too.

Leo fantasizes about having sex with a complete stranger, but when he gets his chance it isn’t nearly as wonderful as he imagined it to be. His dad’s boss tries to teach him a lesson about making stupid choices, but his education in submission doesn’t end there.

Jensen is horrible at math, and now he’s in a calculus class that he’s barely getting through. His parents get him a tutor, but this tutor is interested in teaching Jensen about far more than just math.

Timothy comes back home, to a tiny town he can’t stand, when his mother’s illness gets worse. He’s made a string of bad decisions, and his mother’s friend is determined to turn his life around before Timothy gets lost entirely.

Oh dear. This took me soooooooo long to finish, like ridiculously long for 55 pages. I had such high hopes for this group of shorts, I mean that blurb is pure yummy yumminess! However the execution was just….not good….

Jenson’s Tutoring - 1.5 hearts

Shallow. This had no feeling and the weirdest relationship development I've ever seen, most definitely the fastest. Jensen is coming over to Sam's house for his first tutoring lesson in calculus. When Jenson explains that his problem is being easily distracted Sam offers him a solution, hitting him with a crop.

This was actually a pretty good BDSM scene, a bit of rough fucking, crops and body clips, but it was not appropriate for people who had literally just met. It would have been easy enough to say that Jensen and Sam had been tutoring with each other for a few weeks and that it escalated to something more on this one occasion. Instead they were strangers and Jenson has no BDSM experience at all, oh but lucky for him he's been a inner pain slut all along without even suspecting *que eye roll*. Then when their one thirty minute scene ended they're talking about dating and being completely perfect for each other, it was just too rushed and too shallow.

Leo's Grand Plan - 2 hearts

Such a great concept. College kid organises a hook up with a stranger and it ends up being his dad's boss?!?! Awesome. However this story, like the previous one, did not set it up well.

Leo goes to a stranger's house for a rough/kinky fuck. He's told to put on a blindfold and get naked without seeing the man he'll have sex with, which he does. He gets a really rough fuck, like where his dick goes soft and he's in true pain. Then he takes off his blindfold to find his dad's boss and you know what he says when Leo asks if he'll tell his dad?

“Then I’d have to explain to him how I ruthlessly fucked his son so he would know that rough sex could be violent and painful for him and not want to be so stupid again in the future. No thanks.”

Yep, real stand up guy.

Anyway it takes them both about two seconds to try it for real, which they do. The scene wasn't bad, but it was rushed.

Hitachi’s New Assignment - 2 hearts

Ok I think this is going to be a running trend with these stories. They really just need to start with the sex and end with the sex because that character/relationship development is almost cringe worthy.

Hitachi is a police officer who has to pick up some rich kid from the airport and take him home. Apparently the kid's dad is trying to set him up with these police officers. The build up was virtually non existent and the dialogue was really stilted.

However, like the others the sex was hot. A bit of 'Officer’ role play with handcuffs, lots of dirty talk and some orgasm control. Then it was ruined by a 'forever’ type of connection *que another eye roll*.

On to the next story…. Here's hoping for a break in the pattern.

Timothy's First Rodeo - 1.5 hearts

Nope no such luck. This started out quite good with Adam rescuing Timothy from getting beaten up in his barn. After patching him up, Adam offers to let Timothy stay at his place to watch the rodeo on TV. All very nice and normal, then all of a sudden this older man (stranger danger) has his hand on the inside of Timothy's thigh…. Yeah…. Creep alert.

Then when this was said,

“You seem awfully eager to have sex with some guy you just met. Should I be worried about your mental state?”
“Only if you want a relationship . But this? A bit of sex isn’t a big deal.”

I was thinking, 'Yay maybe they will have a normal and appropriate HFN’, but... no! A few hours later Timothy is moving back to town to live with this man in a domestic discipline relationship.

Also Adam and Timothy's mum are like BFFs and talk all the time and that is a little weird….

“How long have you been planning this?”Timothy asked him.
“Planning to see if you’d want to be my sub?”
“Yes.”
“Since your mom told me how much trouble you were getting into out there on your own. She loves you, and I know you can be good, if only you have some guidance. I was going to wait to decide after spending some time with you here, but I was impulsive and wanted you right away. And now you’re mine, so it all worked out in the end anyway.”

Also much less sex in this installment, which is a shame considering that's the only part I liked.

Unfortunately these bunch of stories didn't work for me. There was no real character development, or characters who interested me in general. The concepts were great, hence why I requested it, but everything was played out too rushed with ridiculous happy ever afters.

Synopsis

A Linebacker in Lace by Caitlin Ricci

Brent likes wearing lace underwear, but it’s not something he plans to reveal, and he never thought he’d meet a guy who shared his kink. So when Arliss approaches him at a bar and mentions he can see lace underwear peeking out from his waistband, Brent is embarrassed—until he finds out Arliss has got a thing for guys in lace.

Satin Secrets by CL Mustafic

When Dr. Gavin Addison answers his doorbell, instead of the delivery guy he expected, he gets Officer Lex Turner, who takes Gavin’s invitation to step in out of the cold a little too far. Before he leaves though, he investigates the satin lace peeking out between Gavin’s shirt and pants. Will what he finds be the only secret revealed?

Backwards and in High Heels by Elizabeth Coldwell

Dancing cheek-to-cheek with his lover while wearing a beautiful gown has always been Billie’s dream. But how can he persuade a sympathetic teacher that he needs to learn how to dance backwards—like a woman—so he can make that fantasy come true?

Angels in Delaware by Sita Bethel

Stranded at a nightclub, Beau thought he’d have a long, solitary walk home. He never expected to meet two gorgeous strangers willing to give him a different kind of ride instead.

All That Entails by E.M. Hamill

Prince Darian is prepared to set aside his scandalous preference for gowns and take a wife to benefit his royal brother’s treasury. Henry is resigned to the fate his outward sex dictates and determined to follow through with an arranged marriage to the prince, rather than risk his father’s threat of an asylum. But he will enter this union with the truth known—or not at all.

In each other, they find unlikely kindred spirits and realize they may finally get the acceptance for which they’ve always longed.

After the Dance by Sydney Blackburn

Mechanic Frank Dixon knows his unrequited love for the boss’s son, Charles Quinn, is an impossible dream, even after he and Charles work together on a special project and become friends. When Charles confides his parents are going to force him to choose a bride during an old-fashioned ball, Frank’s roommate uses his influence to help Frank fulfill his wish to attend the ball in a pretty frock. But after the dance, will his heart be broken, or will all his dreams come true?

A Secret Shared by C.A. Blocke

When Michael told Tommy of his nerdy secret life as a Dungeon Master, after a few months of casual dating that seemed to be heading for serious territory, he didn’t expect anything in return. He certainly didn’t expect his new boyfriend to join him for a game session, and he definitely didn’t anticipate Tommy divulging his desire to dress up en femme. Thankfully, the surprise comes out well—for both of them.

Ruffle My Feathers by Asta Idonea

Barrett leads a double life—builder by day and drag act by night. Having successfully kept this from his colleagues, he’s stunned when he spots his boss, Keith, at a performance. Unlike Barrett, Keith is still completely in the closet. And though he promises not to reveal Barrett’s secret, the sight of Barrett in dress and feather boa awakes hidden desires, and he may not be able to keep them at bay.

After the Dance by Sydney Blackburn – 500 words

“I would not make a good wife,” she whispered. Her cheeks heated with another blush, but she turned to look at Charles, searching his face. “There’s something I’ve longed to do, Charles. May I?”
“Why, yes, I suppose.” His brows were slightly furrowed, his smile quizzical.
Neither Frances—nor Frank, for that matter—would ever have a chance like this again. She placed one hand on his shoulder and slipped the other around to cup the back of his head. She pressed her lips to his, gently. His spine stiffened in surprise, but Frances wanted more. She increased the pressure of her lips, parting them slightly. She touched Charles’s lips with the tip of her tongue and tightened her hold on him as he slowly returned the kiss.
His hands settled lightly on her hips, as if he wasn’t sure how to correctly respond.
But when Charles pulled his head back, Frances let the kiss end. She stared into his brilliant cobalt eyes. The sudden blush on Charles’s cheeks surprised her. He turned his head, lowering his gaze, and abruptly let go of her. “I, uh. I’m not—I don’t have a great deal of experience with women, uh, Miss…Frances.”
“I didn’t mean to…” make things awkward, but saying it out loud would only make it more awkward. Frances took it as a good sign that he was still within a few inches of her, hadn’t pushed her away, or made his excuses.
She touched his forearm gently, but refused to apologize. This was her only chance, as close as she would ever come to making Frank’s dreams come true. “This might sound dingy, because you don’t know me, but I love you, Charles. I wanted to tell you that,” she said, pressing closer, as close as they’d been while dancing.
“Um.” He cleared his throat.
“Don’t worry; I don’t expect you to say it back. I know you love someone else.”
Charles’s eyes widened. “You do?”
Frances nipped at the inside of her lower lip. Frank knew that. Frances didn’t, shouldn’t. Impulsively, she kissed him again.
Charles responded immediately, if cautiously, letting her take the lead again. His hands returned to her hips and slid around, one running over the curve of her ass as if he’d never felt one before. Maybe he hadn’t if he was as inexperienced as he claimed. His other hand found itself on her bare back, and she whimpered into his mouth as erotic chills chased up her spine. That kind of thing would never happen as Frank.
She carefully moved her thigh to hide her erection and wished Charles was kissing Frank instead. Eyes closed, focussed on the warmth and wetness of Charles’s mouth, the strength of his tongue, the hint of brandy and cigars, she let Frances slip away.
Frank kissed Charles even if Charles was kissing Frances.
About the Author
Sydney Blackburn is a binary star system. Always a voracious reader, she began to write when she couldn’t find the stories she wanted to read. She likes candlelit dinners and long walks on the beach… Oh wait, wrong profile. She’s a snarky introvert and admits to having a past full of casual sex and dubious hookups, which she uses for her stories.
She likes word play and puns and science-y things. And green curry.
Her dislikes include talking on the phone, people trying to talk to her before she’s had coffee, and filling out the “about me” fields in social media.
Besides writing, she also designs book covers for poor people.
