Tag Team Review: From Ashes (Heathens Ink #3) by K.M. Neuhold

“When the broken man with scarred skin walked into Heathens, asked for a job, and showed me a sketch of a phoenix, it felt like fate.”~ Adam

It started with an anonymous post by someone who didn't want to live anymore. I read it over and over again, unable to get it out of my mind. What if my brother Johnny had posted something like this before he'd taken his own life? Would someone have been able to save him?

I've been living a lie for 16 long years and I'm not sure how much longer I'll be able to keep it up. And when a beautiful, broken man walks into my tattoo shop asking for a second chance at life, I know I'll never be able to turn him away.

“When I was so far down I couldn’t even see the light, a stranger reached in to save me”~ Nox
I didn't have anything to live for, until a kind stranger pulled me back from the brink. With physical and emotional scars I have nowhere to turn now but to that same stranger who saved my life without realizing it. But as my feelings for Adam grow, will I ever be anything other than a surrogate for the brother he couldn’t save? Am I even worthy of his love?

**From Ashes is the third book in the Heathens Ink series, each book in the series CAN be read as a standalone.

CAUTION: this book contains graphic descriptions of domestic violence and drug use that may be disturbing to some readers.

Lost in a Book - 3 Hearts

You know what I thought while reading this? Playing dress up. Did you ever play dress up in your parent's clothes when you were a kid? Just to walk around and pretend to be an adult for a tiny bit of time? That’s this book. The kink, the drama, the “intense” situations and the character reactions all reminded me of kids trying to act like adults. Which is odd because there were some very adult situations taking place but their responses and the execution fell a tad bit short.

Adam is a closeted bisexual that has a hero complex after his younger brother committed suicide. He owns his own tattoo shop that provides refuge and work for many men (and a woman) that needed a second chance. He chats online with “Phoenix” when Phoenix is at his lowest point. Both men form a bond though they remain anonymous and hundreds of miles separate them. Throughout the year they talk and Adam repeatedly asks Phoenix to come to Seattle until one day he stops hearing from him.

Phoenix AKA Nox is a heroin addict that “whores” himself out to pay for his next fix. He lives with his psycho boyfriend and looks forward to his chats with Adam. He’s lost and doesn’t know how to break the cycle of using.

“I’m the spider in the sink, scrambling for a foothold, but inevitably being pulled down the drain.”

After his psycho ex earns his nickname of psycho, Nox heads to the hospital and then to rehab. After rehab, he finally takes Adam up on his offer and heads to Seattle; to Adam’s tattoo shop. Nox is offered an apprenticeship and after a few days, reveals that he is indeed Phoenix. Their relationship begins shortly after this revelation.

Let’s talk about the good stuff. The bones for a good story were there. Meeting online, forming a connection, tortured soul, tattooed white knight, breaking addiction, coming out of the closet, family of friends, etc…, all good. Also, the connection between the MCs had a chance to develop organically. Insta-love didn’t take place because they knew each other prior to ever meeting face to face. Their relationship was believable and had a solid foundation. The development of the MCs in the beginning had me rooting for them.

But…

I had a few issues with the execution.

On top of the stuff already mentioned, there was stalking and a crazy female ex-fuck buddy. There was already enough going on and the crazy ex drama didn't add to the story. Also, there was a lot of deep subject matter that was taken with a grain of salt. Prostitute? No biggie. Lit on fire to die? No prob, just make sure you’re on heroin to take the edge off. Homeless, addict, junkie mother. Everything basically glossed over. There was a lot of telling and not showing throughout which I attribute the lack of depth and clarity to.

As I said, the bones of the story were good. The transitions, time jumps, developments and resolutions were just... there, and lacked the finesse to smooth the way. It was just ok. On the plus, I do like my white knights with tattoos. *growl*

Fantasy Living - 3 Hearts

This is the second story I’ve read from this author and I can see that KM has developed a bit more from the last story I read. I haven’t read the previous books in the Heathen Ink series but I don’t feel like I’ve missed anything. I believe this can be read as a standalone but there are references to other characters in the previous books that may be of interest first.

Unfortunately there are still things I don’t like about this writer’s style. The flipping between point of view is still choppy and premature. As soon as I start to feel like there is a flow in one character's head, I’m shoved into the other characters point of view, and it is really jarring. It makes it difficult to stay in the moment, and also creates a dismissive atmosphere. Examples of this are where confessions of dark pasts are shared and then I am dumped into the other characters head, instead of sitting with the feelings of the character who is sharing.

I enjoyed the storyline and the idea behind it. I think the author does a pretty great job with character chemistry and connection. I thought for the most part, the characters were developed well, but when it came to execution of the exchanges of information, a lot of the more difficult subject matter was glossed over. I’m not sure if the characters were supposed to come across as blase and dismissive or if the author wasn’t sure how to be in the moment and allow it to come to a more natural conclusion. It’s difficult to point out specifics when they are probably spoilers. I will say not all of it was glossed over, and there were some great moments between Adam and Nox when they are getting to know each other. I would have preferred the more emotionally scarring moments were the ones that had more time spent on them to parse through and develop the scenes more.

The drama and resolution was unsatisfactory. I could have actually done without it in the story and stuck to Nox and Adam developing their relationship. The resolution was completely underwhelming and unnecessary. I’m trying to pretend it wasn’t in there and focus on what I liked.

Overall I liked this story. I liked the characters, and appreciate this for what it was. I don’t feel like I wasted my time on it and I am not averse to reading more from this author. But if the POV shifts continue to be abrupt, I’d probably need to ensure I wasn’t feeling crabby when I started the next book. It is not a smooth transition, and I think this is why I have such an issue with it.

Blog Tour: Finding Mr. Wright by BA Tortuga

BA Tortuga's here today with some bonafide redneck tips to promote her latest Dreamspun Desires book, Finding Mr. Wright!

BA Tortuga’s Top Ten Redneck Wedding Decorating Tips

Hey y’all!

In my new book, Finding Mr. Wright, Mason is an event planner from Aspen who’s tasked with doing a wedding for a Texas couple who wants classy redneck as a theme…

Here are Mason’s top ten tips for a redneck wedding décor, which even pleases the bride’s brother, who happens to be Mr. Noah Wright.

10. Burlap: Use it as table covers or make bows from it to tie on the backs of chairs.

9. Gingham: As an accent fabric, red and white gingham can be adorable. Not too much, though, or it starts to look like that old Hee Haw show.

8. A doughnut wall. Super trendy. Doughnut cakes are also in, Décor and food!

7. Cornhole games. Give the guys and kids something to do and have a chance to decorate the boards with the bride and groom’s symbols and colors.

6. A bouncy castle. This is just for the kids. There are always kids at redneck weddings. Just saying.

5. Horse shoes. Also décor and possibly a game. Make sure to hang them over doorways for good luck, ends up, U at the top

4. Barnwood everything. Yeah, get that weathered wood as a backboard for the ceremony, as an accent on the tables or chairs, or as the parts of a pergola for the couple to stand under.

3. Boots with short dresses. This is quintessential. Not those fancy city boot. Cowboy boots.

2. The bride and groom on horseback. Whether for the whole ceremony or just the entry. Makes a real statement, though it could be a bad statement if neither person knows how to ride.

1.  Mason jars. Mason jars for drinks. Mason jars for candleholders. Giant mason jars with cookies inside. Mason jars to hold up plates of cupcakes. This will strike a chord. All rednecks have at least one Mason jar in their cupboard.

There you go, y’all! A Redneck wedding dream. I hope y’all will check out Finding Mr. Wright!

Much love, y’all

Leaning N

Everything’s bigger in Texas, including weddings. And misunderstandings.

Colorado wedding planner Mason O’Reilly lands a major contract: a two-hundred-guest wedding at the Leanin’ N Ranch, where his friends Ford and Stoney are working to provide a safe space for GLBT events. The Wright/Preston ceremony is a destination wedding, and as the grooms are from Texas, everything is done over the phone and email. There’s no way that could lead to trouble, right?

Oops.

Oil tycoon Noah Wright isn’t happy about the impending disaster, but he admires Mason’s quick thinking and grace under pressure. And that’s not all he likes about the out-and-proud wedding planner. Even though Mason’s interested in Noah, his Mr. Right can’t possibly be a rancher from Dallas.

Can he?

Review: The Quarterback by Mackenzie Blair

Matt Lancaster is the star quarterback at Bodine College, a small Southern Division II school with an ultra-conservative Dean of Athletics. Matt is also very much in the closet, and he thinks he’s kept his secret well hidden. Until his best friends take him to a happy endings massage parlor and request a male masseuse for him.

In walks Trevor Kim, a gorgeous, pierced, tattooed fellow Bodine student who does massages—without happy endings—to pay for school after his family kicked him out for being gay. Trevor takes one look at Matt and breaks all his own rules about mixing business with pleasure.

Matt needs to keep his scholarship, win the National Championship, and survive his asshole father. Instead, he falls in love. Trevor needs to accept that the football god is meant to end up with him rather than a perky cheerleader. It’s time for a happy ending for both of them.

Debut author Mackenzie Blair lured me with that irresistible blurb.

Sports romance with a Southern MC set in the South? *pancake eyes*
Interracial romance with a pierced MC? *woozy*

I may have strained something trying to get to the request button, though to be honest, I was thinking that piercing was... ah... someplace else. 😳

Anywhoozle...

The Quarterback is a coming out, first love sports romance set at a small college in Alabama (I say it's based on Baylor but don't quote me). Matt is the quarterback and a damn good one for Division II. The football isn't too heavy if sports aren't your thing. There were enough team dynamics to satisfy my craving, though. Matt is in his senior year, still a virgin, because closet and he's had a bit of a crush on "bad boy" Trevor since freshman year. His teammates take him to a massage parlor outside of town and arrange for a happy ending because he's a little... pent up. Lo and behold, guess who the masseuse is?

Trevor is out and it cost him dearly to get there so he's not looking to go back in, but by the same token, he's no idiot. He realizes he's in Alabama where he could get bashed and hazed as often as he could get a blizzard at DQ. He's not advertising but he's not hiding either. He's definitely noticed Matt Lancaster. Who hasn't? He's the golden boy star quarterback of a team that's on its way to a national championship. Of course he's drooled over him along with 95% of the rest of the student body, but he never EVER thought he'd have a chance with him.

Some of his teammates might be cool, but there were enough who wouldn't want to play with him, at least not right away.

The Southern aspects of The Quarterback were strong. Not that I'm the foremost authority on all things Southern or anything. I do believe things are improving regarding acceptance but I still see too many who have been disowned by their family for being gay on a too frequent basis. People are still far too likely to use religion to justify their bigotry. Many are still prone to get seriously bent out of shape at even banal questions regarding their sexuality. Blair is obviously familiar with how steeped repression and bigotry are in Southern culture. Her understanding of Southern hospitality as well as other Southern customs were also evident in this story. I like when authors get the South right and Blair struck a good balance between the good and the needs improvement.

Trevor and Matt and their cuteness drew me in early on. Their attraction for one another is clear. They enjoy spending time together and are crazy hot for each other. I particularly enjoyed Trevor's ingenuity regarding his study buddy scheme. Every virgin needs a sex study buddy.

I HAVE DECLARED IT SO! FROM HENCEFORTH IT IS NOW LAW!

The sex is hot and their progression of sexual adventures wasn't rushed. That spanking scene took the cake! Jaysus, Mary & Joseph! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 #TeamSpanking

The things that I liked less are hard to define and maybe it's just me being hypersensitive but I'll try to explain my feels. There seemed to be a sort of undercurrent of gay shaming? There's something transgressive about the prose especially the oblique references to "certain kinds" of gay that bothered me. It comes across as derogatory and bled into Matt's characterization which I found inconsistent. I know he's on a learning curve for gay culture. I don't expect him to do and say everything right. I'm willing to give latitude, but there were things he said or did that aligned with that naiveté then out of nowhere he'd spout off something about twinks or the Castro that left me squinting.

It wasn't just Matt, though. There were also many inappropriate comments from the female secondary characters and an even greater number of remarks that I found awkward and/or juvenile by any number of characters. Oftentimes I found myself thinking this story was trying too hard to be funny or sexy or showcase its knowledge of gay culture and in so doing it stymied my enjoyment. I think the objective was cheekiness or sassiness that usually missed the mark which made the writing style amateurish on the whole and left me thinking some finesse and polish would've mitigated that.

However, I don't want to leave the impression that I disliked these characters. Some of them I liked, some were eccentric and most added something substantive to the narrative. Some even surprised me in refreshing ways. It's clear their friends and some of their family mean the world to Matt and Trevor and how they interact with them gave them depth as characters.

I also liked that Matt and Trevor's relationship has its ups and downs. Given the fact that this is Matt's first relationship there was an authenticity about him being somewhat clueless that resonated. I liked that he made mistakes, learned from them and stepped up when he was in the wrong. What I didn't like was his tendency to yell and lose his temper.

He and Trevor do get their HEA and maybe it was a little too easy but I'm ok with that. I am a card carrying sap after all. So I would recommend this to sports or coming of age romance fans and those who like virgin MCs in their romance.

Review: Welcome to Crash by Lina Langley

At first, Damien feels lucky to land a job at an influential art studio, but it soon becomes obvious that something’s not right. His gorgeous boss, John, is interested, and he’d be the perfect man for Damien—if Damien wasn’t already in a relationship. It isn’t long before Damien is at the center of a love triangle, forced to choose between hot, punk John and his secret affair with his professor, Levi. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg, because something impossible is happening to Damien—and it’s having a drastic effect on his health as well as his perception of reality.

Each time Damien goes to work, things grow more bizarre, starting with Sam—an artist who has been dead for years and now somehow… isn’t. Damien’s unusual circumstances also free him from the restrictions of monogamy—or so he thinks. Levi, who cannot believe Damien’s claims, fears for his sanity. John also has strong doubts when Damien reveals knowledge of a catastrophic event looming in John’s future. Whether the men he loves believe his wild claims or not, neither can deny Damien is languishing, and if they cannot save him, he’ll be lost. More importantly, they must convince Damien to save himself.

Time Travel is something new to me. I am not much of a history buff, so historical novels don’t do it for me at all. This is probably the first intentionally read time travel story I have ever read, and I found it quite enjoyable.

I didn’t quite understand the logistics in this story, but I kind of just suspended disbelief and enjoyed the ride. Damien had a lot of internal baggage that impacted his relationship with his current boyfriend and his time-travel crush. I found him to be a not very likeable character, but I did enjoy how he interacted with John and Levi in each dimension (?).

It was fun to take a trip back to the 80’s. I mean, I was a kid so I didn’t get the entire scope of 80’s flare, but I do remember some of it. Big hair, ripped clothes, eye-liner, and a more overt rebellion. I also remember crying when my mother dressed me in a denim mini, leggings, and red suede boots for a kindergarten disco…. Ahhhhh the horror that was the 80’s. The Art during that time wasn’t really art to me, and apparently Damien feels the same about the art his employer creates.

I enjoyed the pace of this story. The writing was good. As my first real taste of a time-travel I can’t say I hated the experience, but I didn’t love it either. Well, I actually think it was Damien that I didn’t love, and since he was the character point of view I was thrust into, I just went along for the self-absorbed ride.

His relationship with Levi was sub-par. I couldn’t understand how they reacted to each other later on when it appeared that they were only a casual hook-up. Yes, they wanted more, for some reason, but I’m not sure they had what it took to get there, even if Damien wasn’t having an affair with someone in the 80’s.

Nevertheless I think this story was a bit of fun. It had good depth. The concept was interesting, and it has not put me off this sub-genre now that I’ve had a taste. The characters were well developed and the plot worked well, even if it left me with a lot of questions. I will definitely give this author, and this sub-genre another go in the future.

Review: Family Man by Heidi Cullinan & Marie Sexton

Sometimes family chooses you.

At forty, Vincent “Vinnie” Fierro is still afraid to admit he might be gay—even to himself. It’ll be a problem for his big, fat Italian family. Still, after three failed marriages, it’s getting harder to ignore what he really wants.

Vinnie attempts some self-exploration in Chicago’s Boystown bars, far from anyone who knows him. Naturally, he runs smack into someone from the neighborhood.

Between working two jobs, going to school, taking care of his grandmother, and dealing with his mother’s ongoing substance abuse, Trey Giles has little time for fun, let alone dating someone who swears he’s straight. Yet after one night of dancing cheek-to-cheek, Trey agrees to let Vinnie court him and see if he truly belongs on this side of the fence—though Trey intends to keep his virginity intact.

It seems like a solid plan, but nothing is simple when family is involved. When Vinnie’s family finds out about their relationship, the situation is sticky enough, but when Trey’s mother goes critical, Vinnie and Trey must decide whose happiness is most important—their families’ or their own.

This book managed to be a balance of heart-wrenching and cute and I loved it.

For many readers there are themes that are going to be close to their heart, story-lines that are more personal and alcoholism is it for me. It's quite a common theme in books, drunk parents especially, it adds angst and conflict... and it can be done horrendously. No two alcoholics are the same, no two members of an alcoholics family are the same, experiences differ, but the violent drunk is so overdone - and for me not relatable to the experience I've had. It's easy for me to just read those stories, they are just characters, a plot device more often than not. Cullinan and Sexton though, they wrote an alcoholic who broke my heart because it was so believable. The emotional baggage and guilt of the all involved... it is so well defined here.
"And drinking. And by then she was so agoraphobic she couldn't go anywhere unless she was drunk or high. Not even to the grocery store or mall."
The thing is, she wasn't even an MC, though her part in the story was hugely important because of how it related Trey, because she rang so true to me though it made the whole story more real, more relatable. I understood Trey so well it made my heart ache. Maybe because I felt like I knew him inside out he was my favourite character, but I wouldn't have wanted anyone else for him than Vinnie.

The story of these two - one struggling to make the best he could in a difficult life and one struggling to come to terms with his own needs and how it fits into the family life he's always known is so good. It is written with thought and feeling and... understanding. I became part of the book as I read. I find that the books that draw me in as a reader, that become a part of my experience and not just a book are those that stay with me. They're the ones that require re-reads and pop into a readers thoughts at random times.

As I said, for me part of this book was personal, I truly felt the authors understood what they were writing, possibly for many readers Trey and his mum and the alcoholism are going to be just part of the plot, it's hard for me to judge. The story as a whole though will be a winner for anyone who reads it though. Love and family - the best and the worst. A really great read, and another 2017 favourites for me.
A copy of this book was given in exchange for an honest review.

You can’t hide the cracks under the spotlight

Dusk. Leader of The Underdogs. Destined for greatness. Lives in the now.

Abe. AKA Lolly. Iridescent. Unicorn.

All Dusk wants out of life is for his band to become world famous. He also wants to have a lot of fun along the way. And to get his rocks off. When he wants something, he goes for it, consequences be damned.

So when he sees a gorgeous pink-haired guy who is the human equivalent of tattooed cotton candy, he can’t help but have a taste. But it’s when Lolly ends up on their tour bus that Dusk knows their meeting was destiny.

Abe is the kind of guy who goes with the flow. He was hitchhiking anyway, so why not spend the week with a hot piece of rocker beefcake, getting smothered by his sexy long hair? And why not play the part of the supportive cutie while he’s at it? It’s not like he’d be sticking around for long anyway.

All plans hit a wall when photos of Abe and Dusk emerge online, suddenly pushing the band into the spotlight. To take advantage of the sudden popularity, the band offers Abe money for staying.

Which means money for being in a fake relationship with Dusk.

Which isn’t even fake.

Or is it?

Excerpt

The sun hit him like a red-hot hammer, and he squinted, rushing through the courtyard and into the shadow of the roof. His mouth was already smiling when he saw the logo of an ice cream manufacturer in the window. Since they’d already stopped, he might as well have something sweet to go with the savory. Or, possibly-maybe get peanut butter ice cream and win at breakfast?

The store greeted him with fresh, cool air that he inhaled with pleasure, delving between the shelves to find his prize. He could already see it from afar, next to a few jams, and coffee, and—who the fuck was that?

Dusk stopped breathing and just watched the dreamy, pink-haired creature move along the aisle, headbanging gently to music he was listening to through his mint-colored headphones. There was a lightness to his step, and Dusk followed the guy as if he were a rabbit leading Dusk to Wonderland.

The guy’s hair was styled into two thick, messy boxer braids tied with glittery bands. A pair of rollerblades swung from the guy’s large backpack. With each hypnotizing movement of slim hips clad in well-fitting denim shorts that ended just above the knees, Dusk was beckoned closer to the creature who was so at odds with the coarse surroundings, he must had stepped out of a fairytale and gotten lost in the New Mexican desert. His bare calves were nicely toned and dusted with blond hair, twitching slightly as the angel of a guy danced his way through the aisles.

He only stopped once he approached a newspaper stand and pulled out a music magazine. Leaning slightly against the wall, he finally allowed Dusk a good look on the profile of his boyish yet angular face. Working his way through the pages, he seemed completely immersed in his own little world.

One arm, tattooed in pastel-colored shapes that Dusk could not discern from afar, rose, and the guy pulled on a little white stick that peeked out of his mouth, revealing a shocking pink lollipop that he must have been sucking on all along.

Dusk licked his lips, wishing he could be that lollipop. He checked himself out in a mirror next to a stand with hats, just to make sure he didn’t have anything stuck to his face, and he moved closer to the pastel-hued poisonous butterfly. The guy was cute, colorful, but there was an edge to his look. His neck was inked, and his septum pierced. Oh, how Dusk craved to put his hand against the guy’s Adam’s apple.

He couldn’t recall the last time he was rendered speechless, since he was anything but shy. This guy though, casually sucking on a pink lollipop at this gas station in the middle of nowhere, was making Dusk’s throat dry, his palms sweat, and his dick beg for action.

Lolly blinked and gave a short laugh, staring at something in the magazine. Still gently moving his body to the music coming from his headphones, he rhythmically tapped the lollipop against his lips, only to greedily suck it back in. Every time he smiled, a little black star under his eye moved. At first Dusk had assumed it was painted-on, but as he stared more intently, he recognized it as a tattoo.

That was it. Dusk needed to get himself a piece of that.

He took a few steps closer and reached for a magazine off a shelf above Lolly’s head to get an opportunity to stretch in front of the guy, and when their eyes met, he smiled.

Lolly’s eyes were big and so blue they fit right in with his image. He leaned his head back to look at Dusk more comfortably and pushed the headphones to rest around his neck, revealing flesh plugs of the same minty color. Score.

He moved the lollipop in his mouth with his tongue so that the stick was at the side and wouldn’t prevent him from speaking. “What’s up?”

“What’s the flavor?” Dusk pointed to Lolly’s mouth. He bet it now tasted of wet hot sin.

Lolly pulled on the lollipop so that it slid halfway out of his mouth, only to suck it back in, loudly and without shame. “What flavor do you like?”

“I like fruity. And my manager only allows me one sweet thing a day, so I gotta choose wisely.” It was utter bullshit, but did it matter when their gazes met so intensely neither of them blinked? “Can I try yours to see if I wanna buy it?”

Lolly pulled on the stick, so tantalizingly slow, teasing Dusk with his blue eyes and long lashes, with his perfect tanned skin, with his toned arms that were tattooed into various landmarks and animals. Lolly was not only hot. He wasdesire.

“What do I get in return?”

Sink or swim. Dusk would either get a kick in the nuts or a laugh. He leaned down to whisper into Lolly’s ear. Worst case scenario, he could play it down into a joke and continue from there. “You give me something sweet, I give you something salty.”

Dusk’s skin tingled where they almost touched, and he closed his eyes when the soft, frizzy hair brushed against his cheek. Lolly smelled of something sweet, and yet a bit bitter, in a delicious masculine way that made Dusk want to savor him all the more. Cotton candy made of seaweed? No. That made no sense.

Lolly gave a short laugh, and his fingers briefly rubbed Dusk’s chest. “I’m intrigued.”

Dusk pulled back just enough to look into Lolly’s eyes, and the spot on Dusk’s chest where he’d been touched seemed to tingle as if invisible unicorns galloped along his pecs. How far could he push his luck? The guy wasn’t offended by the dirty joke. Sparks of attraction shone between them as if they’d been glitter bombed, and Dusk found it hard to focus on anything but the pretty lips and blue eyes.

“Intrigued enough to follow me outside and risk that I’m a total psycho serial killer?”

Lolly pulled the candy out of his mouth and slowly moved it along the pink line of his tempting lips, leaving behind a sticky sheen. “Maybe you could taste my lollipop in the restrooms?”

“Fuck yes…” Dusk thought it, but then realized he’d also said it out loud. Oh, who cared? His dick was already filling at the thought of all the things Dusk wanted to do with the sweet lips of this heavenly creature. Was the restroom here actually big enough to fuck in? It better be, because one way or another, he would be scoring soon.

About K.A. Merikan

K. A. Merikan is the pen name for Kat and Agnes Merikan, a team of writers, who are taken for sisters with surprising regularity. Kat’s the mean sergeant and survival specialist of the duo, never hesitating to kick Agnes’s ass when she’s slacking off. Her memory works like an easy-access catalogue, which allows her to keep up with both book details and social media. Also works as the emergency GPS. Agnes is the Merikan nitpicker, usually found busy with formatting and research. Her attention tends to be scattered, and despite pushing thirty, she needs to apply makeup to buy alcohol. Self-proclaimed queen of the roads.

They love the weird and wonderful, stepping out of the box, and bending stereotypes both in life and books. When you pick up a Merikan book, there’s one thing you can be sure of – it will be full of surprises.

Review: How to Love a Monster by Lyssa Dering

Dying at the hands of government goons was always going to happen. Waking up in a dark and twisted afterlife? Not the plan.

Seraphim has the superhuman ability to control his own brain. Or at least, he used to, before his government-mandated brain surgery. The surgery killed him, but life isn’t over yet. He’s just woken up, shivering and alone, in the rain-soaked alleyway of a city he doesn't recognize.

Fiend is a childhood monster. Dreamed up by Seraphim's friend Wish, he was imprisoned in Wish's subconscious until the birth of Wish City, a place for people with superhuman abilities to take refuge after death. Now Fiend is free—and in charge—and he's on the hunt for anyone with abilities once they cross over.

Eager to play with his new toy, Fiend quickly makes contact with Seraphim. Lost and injured, Seraphim lets Fiend slither into his heart. But under the aching pleasure the two find with each other is a hunger that can't be denied, and lurking in the shadows of the neon city are truths neither man nor monster is ready to face.

How to Love a Monster is a gay erotic horror romance featuring twisted and kinky M/M sex, a diabolical love interest, and an HEA ending.

If you enjoy twisty erotic horror then this is definitely a winner. I absolutely loved how this story started.

It was weird, it had a really cool conceptual world, and the characters fit into this story well.

Seraphim wakes in an alley after an operation he had on his brain to remove his power for controlling his brain (I assume this means his nervous system as he tries to warm himself up immediately upon waking and ends up with a nosebleed). He is a “special”, a person who has paranormal powers, and he has been hunted by the government for as long as he can remember. Now he is in an unknown place and he knows no one. He finds himself in a brothel, taking a drug called Love and a hunger to be filled (with cock).

Fiend is the master of Wish City, and he has his sights set on its newest arrival. More specifically, Sera’s beautiful brain. He is the monster under Wish’s bed, and he eats brains. We don’t really know why at first, but it is an accepted part of him from the start.

I loved how weird this story was. How do you think something like this will end? Will Fiend really eat Sera’s brain or will he somehow overcome his physical hunger for this man he wants to keep? It’s pretty touch and go and fun to imagine either outcome. Their encounters are pretty twisted, and beware rape fantasy, or enjoy, if that’s something you’re into.

Wish City is a pretty cool concept. A being so powerful that he can create an entire dimension with his mind, and bring anyone he wants when they die. Impressive. Too bad the first thing Wish created with his mind is a brain eating monster. But Fiend cannot help how he was made, and he just wants to be a part of something. That’s why he’s keeping Wish sedated and controls the entire city.

For a monster, Fiend is both sweet and disturbing. I’d say he is the perfect monster for a romance.

This ticked all my boxes for erotic horror, except the ending. I was expecting something a little bolder, but I can’t say I was totally disappointed. It had the creepy atmosphere, the misunderstood monster, and the surprisingly kinky captive.

If you’re interested in dipping your toes into this genre, I would definitely recommend this for a first taste, or something fun for those of us who dabble in this genre frequently.

Shira Anthony’s Finder’s Keeper: Exclusive Excerpt

Thank you Boy Meets Boy, for hosting this stop on the Finder’s Keeper blog tour! Be sure to read to the bottom of the post for a chance to win a unisex red agate fox pendant I’ll be giving away at the end of the tour.

Finder’s Keeper is my first novel in the brand new Dreamspun Beyond line of contemporary paranormal stories that are romance-forward in the tradition of the old category romances from Harlequin and Mills and Boon. Finder’s Keeper is the sweet story of a half-human, half-fox spirit named Kit who guards a gate between the human and spirit worlds and Zane Mayer, an engineer who inherits the old gothic brownstone where the Gate is hidden.

In this exclusive excerpt from the story, Kit has decided he needs to figure out how to keep the house clean without using his spirit powers, because he doesn’t want Zane to figure out he’s not completely human. As Kit fumbles with the washing machine, his demon sidekick, Lor, watches and laughs.

KIT studied the directions on the back of the jug of laundry detergent. He’d meant to take care of the laundry when Zane was out of the house, but the pile had steadily grown. With Zane around, he didn’t want to risk using his magic to clean it the way he usually did. Besides, doing things manually would conserve his flagging power.
“Are you serious?” Lor had rolled on the floor and chortled when Kit had told him the night before that he was going to do the housework like a human.
“Zane knows nothing about the house, and I don’t want him finding out by seeing me use a spell to clean the place.”
“He’ll probably figure it out when you bungle it, or even better, fry the electronics in the washing machine.” Tears of laughter rolled down Lor’s cheeks.
“I can do this,” Kit announced, half hoping Lor would hear. He picked up the bottle and unscrewed the top. Wasn’t he supposed to fill the cap to the line? But the top had several lines. Given all the clothing, he figured he’d be better off with more, so he filled it to the rim before emptying it into the washer.
Now what?
The washer and dryer weren’t particularly new. Ralph had insisted on buying them fifteen years before, after he’d retired from his job at the downtown advertising firm. But Ralph had never used them. Now, as Kit eyed the dials, he inwardly chastised himself for not having asked Ralph how they worked. It was getting dark outside. He really needed to finish the laundry so he could start making dinner.
“Can I help?”
Kit turned to face Zane, who was sorting the laundry into piles. “No need. It’s my job to keep the house clean,” he croaked.
“I hope you don’t mind.” Zane shrugged. “Old habit.” “I…. No, of course not. Thank you.” Kit couldn’t recall the last time a Keeper had helped him with something as mundane. It wasn’t that they hadn’t offered, but they hadn’t complained when he’d insisted on doing it himself. Caring for them was his responsibility, after all.
Kit went back to studying the controls for the washer. “These things are always a little confusing,” Zane said with a reassuring smile. “Darks first?”
“Uh… sure.” Kit’s cheeks heated. Apparently doing laundry involved more than just shoving it in the machine.
Zane turned one of the knobs to Cold and pulled on it. The machine began to fill with water. “Ren and I moved around a lot.” He scooped up half of a pile, and Kit realized when Zane mentioned darks, he’d been talking about dark colors. “We learned pretty quickly that helping out made things go a lot easier.”
“Foster care?” Kit gathered the rest of the pile and put it into the washer as Zane had just done.
Zane nodded and his smile faltered. “We did okay. We spent the last three years before we aged out with a great family. We still see them from time to time. We’re pretty close.”
Grace and Lucas Jackson. The retired couple had taken the Mayer children in despite their age. The Jacksons still lived in Wilmington. Lor had even found their photos through a Google search. Before the Jacksons, Zane and Ren had bounced around from home to home. “Zane’s school counselor and his foster parents have concerns that he continues to injure himself. Recommend that Zane be evaluated by a therapist for possible borderline personality disorder,” the social worker had written in the notes Lor had shown Kit. Kit knew enough about human society to realize those notes should never have been available on the internet. He generally stayed away from tech, but Kit had made sure no one else would be able to view them.
“It’s great that you’re still close to them.” Kit watched as Zane closed the top of the washer.
“We used to spend every Christmas with them. But they bought a place in Florida a few years back, so we haven’t recently.”
“Oh.” One of Ralph’s friends had moved to Florida too. Kit had seen photos. The water looked pretty, but not any prettier than Lake Erie in the summertime.
“You really don’t need to do my laundry, you know,” Zane said.
“I like doing housework.” It was the truth. Keeping the house clean made Kit feel good.
“As long as you let me help. Although asking me to help with anything in the kitchen other than setting the table and doing the dishes would probably be a mistake.” Zane chuckled and shook his head. “I’ve been known to burn water.”
“That bad, huh?”
“I make a mean box of mac ’n’cheese. Microwave,” Zane said with a self-deprecating grin.

Blurb

The truth might ruin his dreams—or make them come true.

When Zane moves into an old gothic brownstone, he discovers the house comes equipped with a caretaker—Kit, who lives in the basement. Zane is immediately drawn to the charming and attractive Kit. But Kit is much more than he seems. He is a two-hundred-year-old half-human, half–red-fox spirit who guards a Gate between the mortal and spirit worlds—a fact Zane should recognize, but doesn’t.

Orphaned at a young age, Zane never learned he comes from a long line of mystical Keepers. Kit needs Zane’s help to protect the Gate, but how can he tell Zane of his legacy when that will crush Zane’s dreams of traveling the world? If he takes up the mantle, Zane will be bound to the Gate, unable to leave it. But when Zane realizes Kit’s true nature, and his own, he’ll have to make a choice—fight to protect Kit and the Gate, or deny his destiny and any chance of a future with Kit.

About Shira

Shira Anthony was a professional opera singer in her last incarnation, performing roles in such operas as Tosca, i Pagliacci, and La Traviata, among others. She’s given up TV for evenings spent with her laptop, and she never goes anywhere without a pile of unread M/M romance on her Kindle. You can hear Shira singing "Vissi d'arte" from Puccini's Tosca by clicking here: Shira's Singing

Shira loves a great happily-ever-after and never writes a story without one. She's happy to write what her muse tells her, whether it's fantasy, sci fi, paranormal, or contemporary romance. She particularly loves writing series, because she thinks of her characters as old friends and she wants to visit them even after their stories are told.

In real life, Shira sang professionally for 14 years, and she currently works as a public sector attorney advocating for children. She's happy to have made writing her second full-time job, even if it means she rarely has time to watch TV or go to the movies. Shira writes about the things she knows and loves, whether it's music and musicians, the ocean, or the places she's lived or traveled to. She spent her middle school years living in France, and tries to visit as often as she can.

Shira and her husband spend as many weekends as they can aboard their 35' catamaran sailboat, Land's Zen, at the Carolina Coast. Not only has sailing inspired her to write about pirates and mermen, her sailboat is her favorite place to write. And although the only mermen she's found to date are in her own imagination, she keeps a sharp lookout for them when she's on the water.

Of course, it’s hard to keep a secret of such epic proportions, and it’s not a spoiler to say Zane learns of Kit’s true nature not long after this scene. I hope you’ll enjoy Finder’s Keeper and the sweet romance between Zane and Kit. Their need for each other runs beyond love. Together, they are stronger. And they’ll need to be strong to face the challenges that await them.
