Review: Dissonance (Blue Notes, #6) by Shira Anthony

British noble Cameron Sherrington has hit rock bottom. The love of his life, opera sensation Aiden Lind, is marrying another man, and Cam knows it’s his fault for pushing Aiden away. As if that’s not enough, someone is trying to take away his family business, and the US authorities are pursuing him on charges of money laundering. Fearing for his safety and unable to return to London, Cam runs, but he’s too broke to find a place to stay, and his fugitive’s life doesn’t even remotely resemble a Hollywood thriller.

Desperate and betrayed by the people he thought cared about him, Cam takes refuge in the subway station where Galen Rusk plays his trumpet for tips. Though Cam hears the beauty in Galen’s music, it’s Galen’s firm hand on his shoulder that stops him from throwing everything away. Their unusual relationship takes a turn that surprises them both, and neither man is sure he wants the complication. Galen is fighting the ghosts of his past, and Cam has his own nightmares to face. When Cam’s troubles threaten to tear them apart, Cam figures he had it coming—that it’s all penance due for a life lived without honesty or love. But he never considered the possibility that he might not survive it.

Note: Blue Notes Series novels are standalone stories, and can be read in any order.

Relax. Focus.

A mantra of sorts that was repeated throughout "Dissonance"by the main characters, two damaged souls that didn't know that they needed the other. Trigger warnings: past child sexual abuse and suicide attempts.

I warn because this book does not in any form exploit child abuse but the way the survivor recalls his abuse...it struck a chord with me. I am not a survivor but there are people who are very near and dear to my heart that are. And the way the story is told, it put me back into the first time they'd shared with me.  I think the author was spot on in portraying the conflicting emotions (and there are more than what was in Dissonance). I also applaud the author for not making the abuse survivor a likeable character that would get automatic sympathy points just because.

Just like how some people are nice and other are assholes, so can be abuse survivors.  They are people just like you and I. This author took the harder route to tell her story, and I applaud her.

Cameron is spoiled. He is selfish. He is uncaring and a cheater (he's the villain in a previous book in this series). He's rich, elitist, and uncaring. He's also a minor British noble, never had to work for anything in his life. And is unapologetic about it. He is not even touching my top ten of despicable main characters but he might get an honorable mention...if it weren't for the cracks that showed he was more human than he gave himself credit for.

Galen is this new-age, vegetarian, always has a positive quote, high school music teacher and subway performer. Yes, he plays the trumpet in the subway. He catches, the player's eye but Cam believes the good looking blonde to be beneath him, at first. It wasn't until hitting rock bottom, that Cam finally learned to humble himself.

"The realization took him by surprise. He hated the way everyone looked at Cam. Clever, charming Cam. Poised, confident, carefree Cam. Complete and utter bullshit. and with the realization came clarity of thought: not one of them knew Cam. Really knew him. They didn't know the big heart underneath the cool exterior. they didn't know of the grief and heartache. They didn't know that even now, Cam still hated himself for what he'd done to Aiden. Hated himself for what he was. For what he'd been."
Even when Cam hit rock bottom, he wouldn't open. So impenetrable, so cold...but still waters run deep. Ever wondered what makes a jerk tic? Ever think that maybe something happened to mold them into the person they were?  The author does a pretty good case study of Cam as he is being tried for a white collar crime he didn't commit. He's so spoiled and unused to not getting what he wants, it made him more interesting.

Cam goes from Manhattan high-life to hiding in New Jersey with Galen. The story alternates POV but it is mostly Cam's POV being told. We get visits from past characters from the series (my favorite couple - David and Alex - "Prelude" is still my favorite of this series) and get to learn about the characters.

So full of depth they were...both men were damaged, each facet cracked but put together, they made sense. Galen and Cam together made sense. They helped each other while discovering who is behind the sabotage of Cam's life. Galen was a little slow on revealing his background but it was no surprise they were the perfect compliment to each other.

There were a lot of emotions swirling in the story but I didn't feel influenced to pity Cam. It was kind of refreshing to have an asshole MC learn to drop the boulder on his shoulder and realize his self worth. Don't think that all the issues get solved by the end of the story or by a magic penis. No such thing.

Time, discussion were the keys on mending the men while traveling to NYC, NJ, and London. Adult conversations, adult reactions and a sense of realism with a musical background that Shira Anthony writes so well. She's a quiet creeper with the feelz but she always writes a solid story, well for me anyway.

This story does have a HEA, I wish at points the two men would quit being so stubborn but it was in their nature and it made for a better story in the long run. Justice does prevail but on the mens' terms and oddly enough it fit them.

Would I read more of this series? Definitely. (I love that I don't have to read in order)

Anniversary Shenanigans: Author Visit and Give-Away: RJ Scott.

To celebrate bonfire night we have the amazing RJ Scott in the clubhouse. Here to talk a bit about her novel The Gallows Tree (which I LOVED, Lorix) and the celebrations that go on in England to remember the day the gunpowder plot was foiled. Plus, there's a giveaway, so keep reading!

The Gallows Tree
This book is available for only 99c until 7th November on ARe, Amazon and Love Lane!

Cody Garret is only just finding his way after an abusive relationship ended with his ex in prison. Coming to England to restore Mill Cottage is his way of running so he has time to heal. His goal is simple—hire a company to help make the mill cottage saleable then go back to the States.

What he doesn’t count on is meeting Sebastian Toulson-Brown, the brother of his contractor and the man who may be able to show him he can stop running.

But first Cody and Sebastian must deal with the ghosts of lost loves and the destinies that are woven into the story of the mill and the sycamore trees that stand on its land, one of which might be the gallows tree.

Blog Post – The Gunpowder Plot
Thank you to Boy Meets Boy Reviews for having me here today, and congratulations on your first year!

"Remember, remember,
the fifth of November,
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
We see no reason why
Gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot!"

In the UK on 5th November we have something called Bonfire night. There is of course a reason why we have these nights and it all goes back to 1605.

A group of Catholics plotted to blow up the English Parliament and King James l, on the day set for the king to open Parliament. The men were angry because the king had treated them badly and they didn't like it. A man called Guy Fawkes along with a group of plotters attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London with barrels of gunpowder placed in the basement. Guy Fawkes was discovered, and tortured and he finally gave over the names of all the plotters.

For a full explanation with all the details of who was involved just search Google for *The Gunpowder Plot*.

In celebration of his survival, King James ordered that the people of England should have a great bonfire on the night on 5th November. The story is remembered each 5th November when 'Guys' are burned in a celebration known as "Bonfire Night".

Excerpt from The Gallows Tree (MM, Paranormal, Contemporary, Set in England)
Cody caught a glimpse of white and then immediately knew exactly what he was watching. Some kind of lovers' tryst? A midnight, well, two o'clock, rendezvous between a man and a woman. The man slid from the horse in a smooth move, and in an instant, he had the small woman in his arms. The view was strangely erotic as he lifted her slight body into his arms and pressed her back against the fence surrounding the field, and Cody wondered if he should even be watching. He thought he heard a voice, a whisper. But a whisper or even a shout wouldn't carry across that distance, and he dismissed the words as nothing even as they repeated inside his head.

Justice can be seen.

The two were kissing as passionate a kiss as Cody had ever witnessed, despite the fact he couldn't really see their faces. The passion was in the way the man held his lover—tightly, all encompassing, and with unrestrained need. She was bowed back, offering her throat for his kisses, her slim arms wrapped around his neck. It was too much to be watching; it felt wrong. With a sigh, Cody dropped the drape and went back to bed. This time sleep wasn't far off, and he allowed it to pull him under so he could explore further in his dreams what he had just witnessed.
The dream he wanted to have proved elusive. Instead, he dreamed of the usual hurt, fear, and pain that haunted his every sleeping and waking second, and a single sentence spun around his normal hurt. Justice can be seen.

Review: Chance Encounter by Alex Tempera

Charles “Chance” Endicott is a Police Chief of small town, Round River, who likes to also go on patrol with his officers. Though confident in his job, he lacks self-esteem when it comes to looking at himself in the mirror. A painful past broke him down and he doubts his worth as a man, as a person.

Evan Manetti is a lawyer who wants to get away from the big city life as a partner in a lucrative law firm to settle down and open his own practice in Round River. Oh, yeah, he’s also the town’s new Mayor. And he’s trying to keep his past as far away from him as possible.

One encounter paves the way for a formidable friendship that gives them the basis for what both men truly need – love and each other.

I feel like this really could have been good. All the pieces were there.

Police Chief? CHECK
Damaged Hero(es)? CHECK
Hurt/Comfort theme? CHECK

The potential was there. But, unfortunately, this really fell short for me.

The characters and dialogue were very stilted and unnatural. There was so much telling, telling, telling that I never really felt anything. Chance has some self esteem issues from his past. He brings this up constantly and is always calling himself a loser. Um, dude, you're a police chief. In what universe does that make you a loser? Anyway, he kept saying that he felt inadequate compared to Evan, but I never really felt that he felt that way. I get why he would have complexes based on the abuse from his past. But it was just words to me. Annoying words, to be honest.

Also, why did he feel like he wasn't good enough for Evan? What was so great about Evan? I'd like to know. He wasn't a bad guy, but nobody special. He pushed Chance to come clean about his past when he had secrets himself! Um, no. Not okay. He lost my vote then and there.

Then there was just drama at every turn. Someone (read: everyone) was gay, someone was a (kind-of) stalker, someone tried to murder someone, estranged family, past abuse... yadda.  It wasn't angst, just drama. Melodrama.

Like I said, there was something there. The bare bones of the book were good. It fell short in the writing style. It felt unpolished and in need of... I don't know, just more practice, maybe? I'm no writer, by any stretch of the imagination, but I think I've read enough to be able to tell when the writing just isn't there. Yet! Isn't there yet.

If it wasn't for the blog, I wouldn't have read...by Lorix ....also GIVEAWAY!

Back in the Autumn of 2013 one of the unicorns - and I'd be hard pushed to say who - came up with the idea of starting a blog to let the world know which books we loved. I don't know about the others, but it certainly hadn't occurred to me that we would be getting authors contacting us with arcs, but this is definitely one of my favourite blogging 'side-effects'. The joy of reading, and loving, authors I would otherwise perhaps not have is wonderful. As part of our one year celebrations some of us are writing about just those books. Here are mine.

Firstly I would have to go with Here's To You, Zeb Pike by Johanna Parkhurst. This review was posted virtually a year ago, which surprised me when I looked, and I remember just falling for Johanna's writing style immediately. As well as Zeb Pike, I also read and reviewed Every Inferno by the same author. Johanna writes fantastic characters - some of the best I've read. I do love me a  fully rounded character, something I often find I get more in YA books which is certainly the case with this author. I love how the focus of these books, though quite angsty, is not just the MC's sexuality. It is always a part of the story, but not the whole of the story and, just as in real life, these teens have other issues to deal with. I always feel so invested in this author's stories, so in love with the characters that I can really lose myself in the book. I would absolutely highly recommend this author to anyone looking for some good YA to read. Or even just a good book to read, don't be pigeon-holed, try something new! I dare you!

My second choice is, maybe not surprisingly, another YA book, Arrival by Chris O'Guinn. Though I do like YA, this is sci-fi-ish and it is certainly not a book I would have read without the blog. Chris O'Guinn contacted us with this book for review after I'd reviewed Fearless, a book I loved, but I remember the contact came with the caveat that it wasn't a love story (though I beg to differ) so it may not be what we are looking for on the blog. The thing is, we really don't have boundaries, if we love the book or story, we'll review it. We've reviewed fan fic from unknown authors, to full length novels by highly popular authors and, as I knew I already liked Chris O'Guinn's writing, I was more than a little intrigued. I think the reply was something like I'll give it a go and see how I get on with it. And how I got on with it was like a house on fire. Refreshingly different with a great story and again, so important to me, fabulous characters. Characters who won my heart. Between disappointment, betrayal and heartbreak the MC's in this story fought for what they believed was right, even if it wasn't the easy option. The love story stemmed into loyalty and belief in others. It really was a fab story. It is again a book and author I would highly recommend, especially if you're tired of the same old, same old!

Here's what Chris O'Guinn had to say:
Thanks so much to Lori and BoyMeetsBoy Reviews for the awesome support of Hybrids: Arrival. Part sci-fi adventure, part superhero origin, part growing-up drama, Arrival sets the stage for my humans vs. aliens saga. I'm really proud of this one. It's a fun action story that just happens to star Mexican American teens, two of whom are gay. And yes, there is some interstellar romance happening. Hope people come and check it out.

My final choice is KC, at Bat by Tom Medicino. This one caught my attention because it doesn't wrap everything up in a HEA bubble - it shows a slice of the MC's life, warts and all. It reminded me of an Indy film in amongst Hollywood blockbusters and I thoroughly enjoyed that. This book covered the events of a summer, with a little bit afterwards. The events were hard to read sometimes and fun others - it was just a real slice of life caught in the pages of a book. I appreciated the different style, the risk it takes not to write a formulaic ABC novel. It is still the only book I've read by this author, though I feel the urge to check out his other stuff since I've reminded myself of the enjoyment I got when reading this. Again, I'd recommend it to those looking for something a little bit off the beaten path.

Here's what Tom Medicino had to say:
The most satisfying words a writer can hear are “What happens next?” and "I hope there will be a sequel!”   On behalf of KC and Charlie, thanks to all of you who asked.   And, yes, two more novellas in the KC, AT BAT trilogy, “Travelin’ Man” and “Lonesome Town,” will be released by eKensington in Summer 2015.  And look for my next full-length  novel THE BOYS FROM EIGHTH AND CARPENTER (Kensington) next September!

And now to the giveaway - I would like to offer one lucky blog reader the chance to win one of each of these books (ebook format only), kindly gifted by each of the authors. Comment below, telling me about an unexpected treasure you've found, reading wise that is. What book took you by surprise and became a favourite? Don't forget to leave a way to contact you (email, social media etc) and one winner will be chosen at random. You have one week to enter and all winners will be contacted by Dec 6th at the latest. Thanks for stopping by - here's to the next twelve months. :)

Review: Human Rights by S.L. Armstrong

After landing in the pound after being abandoned by yet another family, Ewan is convinced he's too old to be adopted out again. For a pet like him, the only fate left is to be put down. But when Sir Jiat—of the City Guard, no less—visits the pound, he goes straight to Ewan. Jiat prefers the more mature pets and treats Ewan better than he's ever been treated by any previous owner. Ewan sleeps at the foot of his master's bed, not on the floor or outside; he is given toys and other pets to play with and plenty of room to run; and he's fed on a schedule and eats very well. But Ewan's love for his master begins to change, to become something else, something more.

Plenty of pets have been killed over the years for acting on the feelings that Sir Jiat inspires, so he dares not express the desire building inside him. And yet, Ewan can't help but notice that Sir Jiat has begun to act differently as well, more doting, treating Ewan almost as an equal. So even though the thing he wants more than anything is also their society's greatest taboo, Ewan resolves that if he must die, he will die having felt, just once, the warmth of Sir Jiat's soft fur pressed against his bare naked skin.

"Human Rights" by S.L. Armstrong is an alternate universe novella featuring a society where humans are the pets and animals are the masters. My friend read this book and brought up a great point, how do our pets view their pet owners. I'm a pet owner and I'd like to think my pet would think I was a great owner.

This is a story that made me think a lot about animal rights. The author makes a message about adoption: mutts vs. purebreds, pound vs. breeders, how silly or cruel owners can be. And the best part is that the feline and canines are the rulers or Masters.

The story is told from Ewan's, a 31 year old mutt (who is past his prime), he had 3 owners who did not want him anymore and currently awaits euthanasia. The pets are kept for six months in a pound and if they aren't adopted they can look forward to death.

He's saved by a Jaguar guardsman, Sir Jiat, an official in their society. Ewan has only known abuse at the hands of his previous owners. Sir Jiat is so kind and patient to help defrag Ewan's warped mind. The guardsman has a secret agenda, hence the title.

Jiat works wonders with Ewan, so patient and kind. The Master/pet dynamic really works in this book because their bond and the romance takes time to build. Though this is a short story, it did not read like it to me.  Could I have another ten chapters of life after their HEA? Sure could but I won't complain.

Yes, there is sex but this story is more about the relationship. I came to care for Ewan. I got the basics about Jiat but I do not doubt his feelings for Ewan from the start. The two become close which is forbidden in their society but Jiat has a plan. I was not expecting that twist before the end but it was a great one. I got a little nervous there.

I definitely recommend and will be reading more from this author.

What a unique idea.

BMBR:  What are your favorite M/M themes?
Avril:  Ooh. GFY/OFY, Enemies to lovers. Love a good enemies to lovers, as I’m sure my readers can tell *side eye*

BMBR:  What books do you consider Desert Island Keepers?

Avril:  Any MM book with an exquisitely detailed plot and nasty-for-no-reason sex is a keeper for me.

BMBR:  What's your go-to tasty beverage?

Avril:  Coffee? Or Pepsi. Or wine. I’m good with any of that three.

BMBR:  Do you have any secret talents? Inquiring minds want to know.

Avril:  Ha. Nope. I’m afraid I’m stunningly average.

BMBR:  If you had to choose to be one magical beast, what would it be and why? (you don't have to say unicorn...but we won't say neigh either)

Avril:  Heh I’d like to be a fairy, I think. All that glitter and then there’s the wand, plus I get to fly. Yep. Fairy.
BMBR:  Yep. *nods*  We unicorns are all about the glitter 'round here.

BMBR:  Who's your favorite porn star?

Avril:  OMG Is it bad that I don’t really pay attention to their names and stuff? I don’t fan girl over porn stars and I rarely look at their faces much less catch their names. I know, I suck.
BMBR:  In the immortal words of Jenni Lea, "Wait, they have faces?"

BMBR:  Do you have author envy? Whose words do you read and think, "GAH, I wish I wrote that!"?

Avril:  Lawd. Everybody who isn’t named “Avril Ashton”. I’m envious of anyone who writes anything I haven’t.

BMBR:  Any new projects you're currently working on?

Avril:  I’m in the process of wrapping up the first draft of (Watch Me) Body You, book two in my Run This Town series. Lots of GFY goodness, plus the usual nasty-just-because sex and some blood thrown in. You know how I do.

Thank you so much for visiting, Avril!  We hope to see you around again soon.

Anniversary Shenanigans: Author Visit and Giveaway: Leta Blake

We have the awesome Leta Blake visiting us today! Check out what she has to say about fire breathing dragons and the 'Jake Bass Phase' (<- Ha! I love this). Plus, enter to win an ebook copy from her backlist!

BMBR: What are your favorite M/M themes?
Leta: Well, I'm not sure these themes are m/m only, but I do enjoy them in m/m books as well as m/f books. I enjoy friends-to-lovers, enemies-to-lovers, hurt/comfort, and opposites-attract. Something I really want to see more of in m/m because it is a favorite trope of mine is "arranged-marriage-to-love" scenarios. That's pretty specific, isn't it? I've found maybe one or two like that, but I'd love more.

BMBR: What books do you consider Desert Island Keepers?
Leta: Oh, wow! *rubs hands together* Where to start! Let's make a list!

1) The Rifter Series by Ginn Hale. Absolutely would need to have this one with me on my desert island. And, if given enough time alone there, I have no doubt I'd scribble fanfiction for it in the sand.
2) The Administration Series by Manna Francis. Hopefully I won't be stranded on that desert island before books eight and nine come out! *bounces* Eeeee!
3) The Ganymede Quartet by Darrah Glass. Again, I'd have to time my shipwreck on the desert island to be after her release of the final books in the series. I'd be a mess if I was on a desert island with no access to the extra stories I know she's planning!

Basically, these are three series of books that left me playing with the characters in my head after I read them. That's a desert island read for me--a book that takes me on a journey past the pages themselves.

BMBR: The Rifter series! Oh yes!
What's your go-to tasty beverage?
Leta: Non-alcoholic? Club soda and lime. Alcoholic? I'm on a big Old Fashioned kick right now.

BMBR: Do you have any secret talents? Inquiring minds want to know.
Leta: I do a pretty good astrology reading, but it takes a lot of time and effort, so I don't do it much (at all) anymore.

BMBR: That's a pretty cool secret talent. *jealous*
If you had to choose to be one magical beast, what would it be and why? (you don't have to say unicorn...but we won't say neigh either)
Leta: A fire-breathing dragon with a heart of gold. I'd use my flame to ward off intruders (but not actually roast them!) so that I could be alone with my dragon-sized typewriter to dash off romantic stories of gallant knights and their devoted squires. That fire-breathing thing would be super handy even in human-form, I tell you.

BMBR: Who's your favorite porn star?
Leta: Oooooh. Well, I'm a bit fickle and have a new one every few months, but I'm pretty into Colby Keller at the moment. He just really seems into it in all of his scenes, and a guy being into it is the sexiest part of porn for me. I've gone through the usual Jake Bass phase, too, and there was a Falcon guy whose name I never found out that was super hot as a top, but less hot as a bottom, and, alas, he started bottoming all the time. As far as straight porn goes, I'm going to be boring and say James Deen for basically the same reason that I like Colby Keller. He always seems super into it. Though there is a newish young guy I've seen in a few het porn scenes lately and he is unf-so-great, but since I only watch the free stuff, I've never discovered his name. When I do, I'll let you know. ;)

BMBR: Jake Bass phase! Ha! Yes, I believe we have all experienced that at some point.
Do you have author envy? Whose words do you read and think, "GAH, I wish I wrote that!"?
Leta: Hmm. I think everyone experiences some form of author envy. Interestingly, my desert island reads don't really trigger author envy for me. Mainly because I know I will never write like that. Those kinds of stories don't show up in my head. I won't be writing some epic fantasy or sci-fi tale ever, ever, ever. I experience author envy less in the form of "GAH, I wish I wrote that!" and more about other author's time for writing. I have a great deal of envy for full-time authors, and especially those who are good at time management and crank out four to six books a year. I see some of those full-time writers with new release after new release and I just feel like I'll never catch up and never be able to make a real go at this writing thing because I just don't have the time. So, that's where my author envy comes from--a sense that these other people are so crazy-lucky to have tons of writing time...and I'm not. (At the same time, I need to acknowledge that I have a ton more writing time than some other folks, so I need to STFU, yo, and just write. :) )

BMBR: Any new projects you're currently working on?
Leta: Yes! My next book, Smoky Mountain Dreams, is hopefully on track to come out in late November or early December. I'll have more news on that front shortly, I hope.  I'm working on a sequel to Training Season that I'd like to have out this spring, and then I've got a four book Coming of Age series with three books mostly complete and the fourth book to write. I hope to have the first book in that series out in Fall of 2015.

BMBR: Training Season sequel, you say? EXCITED! <-ME.

Thanks so much for visiting & chatting with us today, Leta!

About Leta Blake:
While Leta Blake would love to tell you that writing transports her to worlds of magic and wonder and then safely returns her to a home of sparkling cleanliness and carefully folded laundry, the reality is a bit different. For as long as Leta can recall, stories have hijacked her mind, abducting her to other lands, and forcing her to bend to the will of imaginary people. This absence from reality results in piles of laundry and forgotten appointments. In between abductions, Leta works hard at achieving balance between her day job, her writing, and her family.

Anniversary Shenanigans: Author Visit and Giveaway: M.J. O'Shea

To kick off our month long anniversary celebrations we're welcoming the lovely M.J. O'Shea! aka Queen of The Cute (titled by me, Breann) because OMG, she writes some seriously cute boys. And enter to win an ebook copy from her backlist!

BMBR: What are your favorite M/M themes?
MJ: I'm always a huge fan of first love. I even try to incorporate it in my own writing when I have older characters (who may have not been in love before). It's fun to watch characters experience that for the first time. As far as general themes, I love musicians and chefs, I never get sick of paranormal, and I looove spies!

BMBR: What books do you consider Desert Island Keepers?
MJ: I'm not going to name and MM books (since I know a lot of the authors in person and I hate to pick between friends!!) But for me any and all of harry potter, Ender's Game, Stardust and my book of fairy tales.

BMBR: What's your go-to tasty beverage?
MJ: I really love coconut water, actually!

BMBR: Do you have any secret talents? Inquiring minds want to know.
MJ: Ummm probably not so secret is my music thing. I started playing the piano when I was five and flute at 9 and still play both. I can wing it on a couple other instruments and I was in choir... I'm pretty much the quintessential music geek lol.  And I do love to paint, although that's more of a hobby:) I've never done it professionally.

BMBR: MJ was kind enough to share some of her work with us and wow! That's gorgeous!
If you had to choose to be one magical beast, what would it be and why? (you don't have to say unicorn...but we won't say neigh either)
MJ: If by beast you mean animal in nature.. does mermaid count since they're half animal? If I can't pick that I'd be a pegasus. They can fly!

BMBR: Mermaid totally counts. Maybe you could be a mermaid shifter that turns into a Pegasus. Why not!
Who's your favorite porn star?
MJ: I actually don't have one... Sorry, that's probably a super lame answer:(  I've heard brent corrigan talk a few times and he seems really interesting and intelligent so I'll go with him!

BMBR: Do you have author envy? Whose words do you read and think, "GAH, I wish I wrote that!"?
MJ: Again, I'm going to stay out of MM. There are a ton of super talented authors but I wouldn't want to pick just one! As always, my answer is JK Rowling. I can't imagine being able to say that I came up with the whole harry potter universe. I'm sure there are more profound things out there, but that changed the lives of so many kids (and not kids!) it would be amazing to have been the creator of that.

BMBR: Any new projects you're currently working on?
MJ: Always :)  I'm in process of finishing a book I'm calling Family Jewels about very talented jewel thief and an interpol agent who is head of the department who has been tasked to track him down. Of course they meet and fall in love:) I've been having a great time mixing romance with a background set of thriller/mystery. That's the second of my books like that. The first, Corkscrewed, is out in December. It's about two con artists competing for the same mark (the owner of an extensive vineyard and wine collection), and of course falling in love even if they don't want to:)

I'm also in the middle of writing three books about different pastry chefs with my friend Anna Martin. The first, Macarons at Midnight, is already out but the next two are in different stages of production and coming soon! I love writing about chefs just as much as I love to read about them. Not very good for the ol' healthy diet though!

BMBR: Sounds awesome! Can't wait to be my hands on them.

Thanks so much for visiting & chatting with us today!

Fangirl Review: The King by Tiffany Reisz (The Original Sinners #6)

Cunning. Sex. Pure nerve. Only this unholy threesome can raise him to his rightful place as a rule of Manhattan's king kingdom.

Bouncing from bed to bed on the Upper East Side, Kingsley Edge is brilliant, beautiful and utterly debauched. No carnal act of chemical compound can relieve his self-destructive heartache—only Søren, the one person he loves without limit or regret. A man he can never have, but in whose hands Kingsley is reborn to attain even greater heights of sin.

Kingsley's plan to open the ultimate BDSM club—a dungeon playground for New York's A-list—becomes his obsession. His expertise in domination can't subdue the one man who wants to stop him. The enigmatic Reverend Fuller won't rest until King's dream is destroyed, and so the battle lines are set; it's one man's sacred mission against another's…

FIRST WARNING:  I'm about to fangirl the bejesus out of this book.

SECOND WARNING:  Girl parts ahead.

Let me clear two things up right quick. See that blogger name? That "King" isn't just any ole king. This is my King. Kingsley Edge as he's known throughout his kink empire or Kingsley Theophilé Boissonneault, his given name or King as he's commonly referred to. Mon Roi. I could list all the reasons why I love him but why? It should speak volumes that part of my blogger universe name includes him. Secondly, I know there will be some tempted to just read this one. That's a mistake. The backstory of how King, Søren and Nora came to be was built in books 1-5. Starting here will be out of context and won't resonate. Alright. Enough about that let's talk about this book!

This book!

#Team King fans get ready. Ms. Reisz pulled out the big guns on us. The ongoing debate/feud/divide regarding Søren and King gets put front and center. I'll be the first to admit I've been part of that debate more than once and I had an epiphany of sorts while read this-it doesn't matter. Why? Because I'm always going to choose King. I'll always be on his side, so you see it doesn't matter if Søren's always loved him, or if Søren sacrificed his wants and his needs for King's safety or if he only used him. It matters not. Having said all that, I needed this book. I needed to know that Søren suffered. I needed to see this one on one relationship between them. I needed to see Søren's hunger. I needed to hear Søren say Jeg elsker dig to King.

The King bridges the gap between #Team King and #Team Søren by focusing on their relationship after Søren comes to King for his help with Nora. King is spinning out of control-drinking too much, having reckless sex with too many people and is on a fast track to an early grave. He has no focus, no goals, nothing. Søren helps him define his goals and facilitates his becoming the king of the kink that we all know and love. They've been each other's family, they've been lovers, here they become friends. I was delighted to see Søren's sense of humor. He's always struck me as stiff, aloof, distant, unemotional, and intimidating. He seemed less so here. We also got to know Sam. Sam and King make quite the odd couple, but they're endearing together. I never realized just how much he loved her. They form a largely business relationship built on trust with the mutual goal of bringing down Reverend Fuller and his evil empire.

The whole Original Sinners series marries kink and religion. It sounds like a marriage doomed to fail, I know, but it works. Normally, it's centered around Søren's priesthood, but in The King it's centered on Reverend Fuller's evangelical empire trying to secure a base of operations in New York City to rid it of it's debauchery. Fuller buys an old hotel, The Renaissance, that King decides is the perfect setting for his kink sanctuary. And so it begins… As events unfold, we learn that not only does Fuller's wife write bestseller after bestseller on Christian values to include how to "un-gay" your child through starvation and exorcism, but they run reorientation camps wherein queer kids are tortured. How very Christian of them.

Really shouldn't underestimate King or his friends. They're all loyal and versed in chicanery. Thus, The 8th Circle was born. A place where all those who are kinky are welcome. Gay, straight or somewhere in between but, most importantly, for Søren. King built it to give Søren a place to… retain his sanity.
"Søren was Kingsley's king."
Was I disappointed that we didn't get La Legion King?
Yeah, for about thirty whole seconds.

Was I disappointed that we didn't get updated on the Nico/Nora situation?
Yes, actually. But I simply cannot complain after having been given this gift of an entire book about King from King's perspective.

Momma taught me not to look a gift horse in the mouth and I would like to thank Ms. Reisz for this gift.

Now, I often talk about writing style and world building. Sometimes plot is thin but characters are great. Sometimes the writing is good but it lacks emotionality or I don't connect with the characters. There are so many things that authors get tasked with, but this author has built a world and characters that aren't just three-dimensional, but real to a fairly large, and at times rabid, cult following, myself included. These characters are all flawed except for Michael who's a perfect angel. They're all capable of sending me through the emotional wringer. That's skill. Undeniable skill in my book. Every book in this series has surprised me and confused me and made me cry and made me think and made me want to re-read them. Some have even taught me a few things. No, not those things. Get your head out of the gutter. That's my spot.

They also bring the kink. Ms. Reisz knows her kink and all of her characters are kinky to some degree. Søren is THE sadist. King and Nora are switches in this bizarre love triangle, though Nora's not in this one. We get to meet a couple Dommes that have been mentioned a few times. We get flashbacks of King and Søren when they were kids and… mmmmmmmmhhhppppfffffff!!! King is a card carrying member of #teampain.
When he thought about it, it made no sense to him that he felt the freest and the strongest when on his knees and being hurt.
King hides his masochism. He's only ever submitted to Søren up until this point and won't to anyone else for fear of being judged weak. Heartbreaking but likely true. I respect what I think Ms. Reisz is trying to do by creating all these male submissives who are badasss motherfuckers you would not want to cross. And Michael. Sweet, precious Michael. I digress. There is an unexpected and delightful surprise here which I won't spoil, but it was very, VERY satisfying. I don't mind saying that it threw me for a loop. Naturally, there are submissives both male and female. The man is temptation personified and proud of it. He's French and vain as Narcissus himself. God, I love him. At any rate, King makes excellent use of all of them. Sexy beast that he is. AND what's more King put on a corset!!!!!

WAY!!!!

I might have reacted in an altogether embarrassing manner. Possibly. *side eyes*

I have one quibble which clearly isn't changing my rating, but it seems to me all the female characters are starting to sound alike. All witty and snarky and pithy and… like Nora.

Pish posh! Who cares?

I GOT A WHOLE BOOK WITH NOTHING BUT MY MAN!!!!!!!

Je t'aime, mon Roi. Je t'aime.

I would like to thank Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this novel in exchange for my honest opinion.

Heart by Garrett Leigh Blast AND Giveaway!!!!

Cornish pastry chef Seb Wright dreads the summer tourist season. The cash injection to his artisan fudge pantry is more than welcome, the extra work, less so. Then one summer, a shadowy Good Samaritan catches his eye. Irish Traveller Dex is bewitching, a beautiful sullen enigma who turns Seb's world upside down until he disappears in the night, vanishing like a mystical summer rain.

Twelve months later Dex is in the midst of a dark storm. A slave to his master, 'Uncle' Braden, he spends his days cleaning caravans and his nights working in Braden's other businesses. His short summer with Seb seems a lifetime ago. Lost in the savage violence of the murky underworld, he doesn't dare dream he'll ever find his way back, until one night, a brutal crime opens the door for a chance escape. A new life beckons, old faces emerge, and immersed in the heady vibe of London’s East End, new love begins to heal his fractured heart.

Do y'all have ANY idea how excited I am for this story?? The first Garrett Leigh work I read was Gypsy Rain and I feel in love. Hard and fast, I fell in love. Many moons ago Garrett teased she was going to write about Seb and Dex again and it's HERE!!!!  Enjoy ALL the things here and thanks to Garrett for the wonderful stories, breaking our hearts repeatedly and making us fall in love with all her heroes.

Excerpt from Heart:
Seb took a drink of his beer and set it down again with undue care. “You can’t read, can you?”

“Can.”

“I don’t believe you.”

Dex slid off his stool and shoved his hands into his pockets. He wasn’t sure what he’d expected when Seb had ambushed him, but it wasn’t this. So what if he couldn’t bloody read? It wasn’t like he’d ever been to school to learn.

Seb caught his arm. “Don’t go, Dex. I’m sorry, okay? I won’t tell anyone. I promise.”

Seb’s hand engulfed Dex’s wrist, his touch as charged and heated as it had ever been. Dex felt his resolve melting, ebbing away until it was all he could do to fall back onto the bar stool. “I can read some,” he said mutinously. “I can read numbers, and names. Knew the name of your shop, didn’t I?”

“Can you write?” “Never tried.” Dex looked down. Lying to Seb felt all wrong. He’d heard the name of Seb’s shop on the street, and the only name he could read was his own.

Seb was silent for a moment, then without warning, Dex felt his fingers brush through his shower-damp hair. “It really is brown. I thought it was just wet.”

Dex fought for the strength to shy away from the soft gesture, but nothing happened. “The bleach grew out.”

“It was dyed?”

“Couldn’t you tell?” Dex had forgotten his brief stint as a blond was all Seb had ever known of him.

“No, not at all. You look totally different now. Not sure I would’ve recognized you without the scowl. You just about shocked the shit of me. I… I thought I’d never see you again.”

OH MY GAWD RIGHT?!?!?!

A little info on Garrett and where to get your copy of Heart:

Author Bio: Garrett Leigh is a British writer and book designer, currently working for Dreamspinner Press, Loose Id, Riptide Publishing, and Black Jazz Press. Her protagonists will always be tortured, crippled, broken, and deeply flawed. Throw in a tale of enduring true love, some stubbly facial hair, and a bunch of tattoos, and you’ve got yourself a Garrett special.

When not writing, Garrett can generally be found procrastinating on Twitter, cooking up a storm, or sitting on her behind doing as little as possible. That, and dreaming up new ways to torture her characters. Garrett believes in happy endings; she just likes to make her boys work for it.

Garrett also works as a freelance cover artist for various publishing houses and independent authors under the pseudonym G.D. Leigh. For cover art info, please visit blackjazzpress.com
