They’re fated even though they can’t stand each other.

Blurb

Dekker Baines decides he wants to start a family, but he doesn’t have an alpha, so he goes to one of Pine Wood Falls get-togethers. It’s where you go if you need someone to mate with, but his evening goes sideways when a few alphas don’t take no for an answer.

Ryder Remington is Dekk’s business partner, and when he gets a call that Dekk is in trouble, he runs to his rescue and comes across a scene that makes his blood boil. A month after the attack, when Dekk goes into heat again, Ryder tells him he’ll be the father of his children. Dekk is reluctant at first but can’t fight his urge to be with child.

Now they’re starting a family, but the thing is, they can’t stand each other. They are as mismatched as two people can get. Together they have to navigate recovering from trauma, try to tolerate living with each other, and get ready for quintuplets. If they can manage all of that, they might get their happy ending, but things never go according to plan.

Excerpt

BALLING MY FISTS AT MY SIDE, I TOOK IN A DEEP BREATH. It was one of those moments where I wondered why I went into business with this man. Ryder Remington was very punchable, but like I could have ever punched him, he towered over me.

“There’s no way in hell we’re naming the bar that.” He scratched the dark stubble on his jaw and shook his head.

I crossed my arms over my chest and smiled. “Why? It’s cute, a play on words.”

“Bars aren’t supposed to be cute,” he grumbled.

“Not everything has to always be macho and manly.” I sat at the bar with my laptop in front of me.

“Macho. Who uses that word? You know who? Someone who likes cute. For now, the bar is staying named bar.” He couldn’t even be bothered to capitalize it. The sign above the door outside seriously said bar. From where he squatted on the floor, he bore his dark-brown eyes into me, pressing his lips together. It was his go-to I’m an alpha, and you’re going to listen to me look.

“But The Ballet Bar has such a nice ring to it.”

“No.”

I stuck my nose up in the air. “Fine, always so grouchy.”

“I’m not grouchy,” he said, snarling his lip.

“Gruff.” A perfect word for him. Demeanor and looks. He was a six-foot-five wall of muscle with light tan skin and a head of thick wavy hair. He always wore dark jeans and a black T-shirt and seemed to favor the perfect amount of stubble. And if I didn’t know him and was in a dark alley with him, I’d turn and go in the opposite direction. He always looked like he wanted to harm somebody.

“Aren’t you supposed to be doing some kind of work?” he asked as he emptied the box of bottles next to him.

“Aren’t you?” I flicked my wrist in his direction, and besides, I was doing work. Someone had to keep our business affairs in order. I had just finished placing an order for a new local craft beer we were going to try.

“How did I get talked into opening this place with you?” He stood and folded up the now empty box.

“You saw the brilliance behind my plan.” Basically, I was able to front half the money to open the place. Pine Wood Falls offered a lot of assistance if you opened a business there, like land or a storefront, but there were plenty of other things needed to open a business that required capital. I had moved back to the area about half a year before and wanted something new in my life. Plus, being my own boss sweetened the deal, and my friend Lucas told me he heard about how Ryder was looking for a business partner.

He furrowed his brow and began to wipe down the counter. “And you know what?”

“You know what I know? You’re still trying to come up with a response.”

“You’re supposed to be the business end. In the back, doing the books.”

“Do you know that running a business entails more than some money and doing the books as you say?”

He ignored me and continued to wipe the counter.

“And I put up half the money, too, so I should have just as much right naming the place. You’re the one that makes the drinks, but it doesn’t make you special.” He thought since he was the alpha, he got to call the shots, but we were in it fifty/fifty. Therefore, even if he only saw me as some little omega, I still had an equal say, and I was not ready to give up my fight on naming the bar, but for the day, I let it go.

“It does. I’m so goddamn special.”

“You precious little peach you.”

“Said the ballerina.”

“Said the college dropout.”

“I went and tried. Did you ever take a college course? No.”

Well, he had me there. “I was at an elite dance academy.”

He put his hands on the edge of the bar and leaned in toward me. “For high school.”

“I was actually there until a year after high school,” I said.

“See, and you’re making fun of me. I’m a proud college dropout. You, it seems, was held back at your fancy pants school.” He smirked and threw the towel he wiped down the counter with over his shoulder.

Kyle must choose between the love of his past and the man he could love in the future

Blurb

For fifteen years, Kyle and Dustin seemed like the perfect couple. That was until Kyle came home to discover Dustin in bed with a yoga instructor half his age and twice his flexibility. Two years and countless therapy hours later, Kyle has almost put the incident behind him. Being nearly forty and single makes a man bitter, but he’s making do.

Yet, when Kyle’s best friend asks him to be her Man of Honor, on her ten-day Caribbean wedding cruise, Kyle finds himself in a most uncomfortable situation. He ends up trapped on a seafaring vessel for ten days with the man who practically destroyed him.

Face to face with Dustin for the first time since the breakup, unresolved feelings float to the surface, and Kyle and Dustin both begin to wonder if their story is as over as it seems.

While navigating unchartered waters with Dustin, Kyle also meets Jax, a sexy Australian who likes to cruise in more ways than one. Kyle is more than happy to let Jax distract him for ten days. Still, when Jax suggests that he might want more than just a few days of fun, Kyle must choose between the love of his past or the man he could love in the future.

Excerpt

No, absolutely not!” I nearly choked on a spinach leaf.

“You have to come,” Sapphire insisted. “I want you to be my Man of Honor.”

“A) That’s not a thing. B) The answer is still no.”

“I can’t get married without you.”

“Sure, you can. There’s no law against it. People do it all the time.”

When Sapphire offered to take me to lunch, I should have suspected something treacherous was afoot. Sapphire and I were like sisters. Sisters of different races and one of them with a penis, but sisters, nonetheless. Our relationship was something enormous and incomprehensible to most people. On paper, we had nothing in common. We had completely different backgrounds and cultural experiences that cultivated entirely different perspectives of the world around us. Despite those differences, we had found each other.

As close as we were, the girl had never offered to buy lunch. She seldom volunteered to pay for anything. That should have been warning number one. When she suggested my favorite Italian restaurant, Armando’s, that should have been warning number two. When she volunteered to foot the bill to attend her destination wedding cruise, I should have known to prepare myself for the Armageddon of bad news.

“You spent fifteen years with the man. What are ten more days?” She spoke with her hands. A piece of chicken flung off her fork and onto the table beside us. The senior couple, who were trying to enjoy their eighteen-dollar salads, glared at us like we each had two heads.

“I’m so sorry,” I mouthed to them.

“I can’t believe you would miss your best friend’s wedding over a tiny, little, uncomfortable inconvenience like this.”

“A cockroach infestation is a tiny inconvenience. Gonorrhea is uncomfortable. What you’re asking me to do is far worse.”

“Don’t be dramatic,” Sapphire said, waving her hand. “Dustin is not that bad.”

“Isn’t he?” He was too tall, too fit, too classically pretty, and all too aware of the fact. He was narcissistic and untrustworthy, but he was also charming and exceptionally good at putting on an innocent act. He could flash his white teeth and his dimples and get people to believe anything he wanted. Still, if you looked into his eyes, you could tell he was soulless.

“Why would you want everyone to join you on your honeymoon, anyway?” I shifted focus. “I hate to tell you this, but if you can’t stand to be alone with Justin for ten days, you probably shouldn’t marry him.”

“Very funny,” she said dryly. “I want everyone there because I want my wedding to be an experience. An amazing memory we can all look back on together.”

“I am not spending ten days, on a tiny boat, in the middle of the Caribbean, with him.”

“It’s a cruise ship,” she corrected. “Besides, you won’t be with Dustin. You’ll be with me.”

“Lies!” I wasn’t buying any of it. “I know exactly what will happen. You and Justin will be too busy enjoying your Caribbean honeymoon to spend any time with me. Then I’ll be trapped, in the middle of the ocean, with no one to talk to except Beelzebub’s concubine.”

“He’s not going to be the only other person there, you know. Several other people will be in our group. You can make one of them your wingman. My father loves you. You can hang-out with him.”

“Honey, don’t take this the wrong way. If I’m on an exotic vacation, and the only man who wants to spend time with me is your sixty-five-year-old arthritic father, I might drown myself in a bathtub.”

“Don’t be silly,” Sapphire dismissed. “You’ll be surrounded by water. There’d be no need to draw a bath.”

I did not look amused.

“I can’t believe you’re still so angry. It’s been over a year.” It had been eighteen months since the breakup, and yes, I was still harboring, hurting, and hating.

I hadn’t seen or spoken to Dustin since the incident. As instructed, he had been gone when I returned to the apartment. With Sapphire’s help and some very strategic planning, I had avoided him throughout the entire decoupling process.

I left yellow Post-it Notes on everything he could take and was extremely vindictive about it. He could have the Blu-ray player, but not the discs or the TV. He could take the kitchen table, but not the chairs. I even kept the Keurig, though I permitted him to take his pods. What kind of monster drank decaf anyway? I also instructed Sapphire to guard the jazz record collection with her life. I detested jazz music, and we both knew it. I planned to pawn or destroy the albums later.

The first few weeks after the breakup, Dustin tried tirelessly to communicate with me. He sent me text messages that I didn’t answer and left voice mails that I refused to listen to. Dustin tried everything short of smoke signals. He even sent me an old-fashioned letter, which I didn’t open and burned immediately. I had nothing to say to him and had no desire to hear what he had to say to me. I had never been an incredibly trusting person, and his betrayal had reinforced all those walls that I had been trying, for years, to dismantle.

Being the forgiving person she was, Sapphire tried to convince me to give Dustin a second chance. Still, I refused, steadfast in my determination that he’d had his chance. Since then, she had been careful not to mention him. Even though I knew full well that she saw him regularly. He was her fiancé’s twin brother. She had to remain cordial. I did not and had no intention of ever being so.

“You simply have to come. We’re going to so many beautiful islands: Turks and Caicos, Bonaire, St. Thomas, and Aruba. You’ve always wanted to go to Aruba.”

That was true, but still, “If you put us on a ship together, I promise you, I will throw him overboard.”

She smiled wide, her teeth gleaming white against the contrast of her chocolate skin. “That’s fine! Just promise you’ll make it look like an accident.”

“Duh,” was the most mature response I could muster. “I don’t want to end up someone’s bitch in a Caribbean prison.”

“Don’t you, though?”

Dirty, prison sex would have been the most action I’d seen in a while. Thirty-nine may have been young by hetero standards, but in the queer world, I was practically a spinster. Being classified as an elder gay meant that my dating pool had been reduced to a few categories. First, those men who were so weird or creepy that nobody wanted them, or second, those who were so bitter and jaded by relationships past that dating them was like trying to build a house out of straw. I was a card-carrying member of category two.

Of course, there was always a third group. Younger men. They were excellent in theory, with their zero percent body fat and their permanent erections. However, too often, their perfect bodies and sexual appetites only camouflaged the fact that they lacked any real substance. If brains were dynamite, most of them couldn’t blow their nose. There were always exceptions. Old souls that knew how to converse about more than just Rhi-Rhi’s new album or T-Swizzle’s latest boyfriend. Those younger men wanted more than sugar daddies. Though, I still couldn’t imagine having enough in common with someone who hadn’t even been alive during the original run of Friends.

It wasn’t that I couldn’t get a date. Even close to forty, I was still cute. Not as attractive as I was at twenty, but I wasn’t a hunchback or anything. My deep green eyes matched my red hair, which I kept cropped short to avoid the bozo-clown-realness it would become if left to grow-out. I was tall and still decently shaped, a little thicker in some places than I’d prefer, but that came with age. At least, that’s what I told myself. I had a good understanding of where that put me in the queer hierarchy. Guys would still bang me; they just wouldn’t brag about it anymore.

Admittedly, the realization that I was no longer prime real estate took some getting used to. Before Dustin, I had been a penthouse in Manhattan, but after fifteen years in couple-town, I was shocked to discover I was now a brownstone in Queens. Next stop? Condemned building in Jersey!

That being said, I was optimistic about my life, even if it meant spending it alone.

“The ship is huge,” Sapphire was still talking. “You won’t even really have to see each other. There are also excursions at every port: zip-lining, snorkeling, hikes, surfing. Come on. You can orbit around each other for ten days without committing a violent felony.”

“Great, so I can spend the entire time by myself?”

“There’s going to be thousands of people on this ship. It’s a floating city. If you’re so worried about being by yourself, you could always try making friends.”

“You’ve known me for twenty years. Am I the type of person who makes friends?”

I was about to find out.

Review: Life of Bliss (Love Life #2) by Erin McLellan

Nobody plans to accidentally marry their frenemy with benefits.

Todd McGower and Victor Consuelos do not like each other. They can’t have a conversation without insults flying, and Victor seems to get off on pushing Todd’s buttons. The fact that their antagonism always leads to explosive sex . . . well, that’s their little secret.

Victor has a secret of his own. His full-blown crush on Todd is ruining his sex life. He hasn’t looked at anyone else in months, and he’s too hung up on Todd to find a date to his cousin’s wedding.

In a moment of weakness after a heart-stopping night together, Todd agrees to be Victor’s fake boyfriend for the wedding. Victor will have his plus-one—which will get his family off his back—and Todd will get a free mini-vacation. It’s a win-win.

But pretending to be fake boyfriends leads to real intimacy, which leads to too much wine, and suddenly, Todd and Victor wake up with wedding bands and a marriage license between them. That was not their plan, but a summer of wedded bliss might just change their minds.

Victoooooooooor!!! I had a serious case of excite finding out that Victor got his story. He was the highlight for me in book one and I had to get my hands on the sassy, hilarious, and fierce dancer. He didn’t disappoint.

Todd is a piano accompanist on summer break. We were introduced to Todd in book one as Rusty’s fickle ex. Todd and Victor were always biting each others head off and all that built up frustration led to “hate” sex. Don’t get too excited, the hate sex takes place off page. *sad face* But, they have chemistry and I’m a big fan of sass, sarcasm, and sex.

Life of Bliss begins when Todd and Victor have already been hooking up for 5ish months. They were able to keep these “booty calls” a secret from their best friends with their typical antagonistic behavior, making others none the wiser. Victor has been secretly pining after Todd since they met. After their latest hookup, Victor has a moment of weakness and invites Todd to his cousin’s wedding. Wedding + hidden feelings + lots of alcohol= drunken nuptials. What happens in Vegas Arkansas clearly doesn’t stay in Arkansas. They decide to give it the summer as a married couple and at the end, Victor and Todd will make a decision on whether they get a divorce or stay married.

“Maybe they’d move so fast and fuck so often that he wouldn’t have time to screw this up?”
nope.gif

Todd has a lot of insecurities about his career path, financial situation, parental judgement, and inability to have a relationship. He does a bang up job of turning the doubt into a self-fulfilling prophecy and throws wrenches into their marital bliss throughout the summer.

Todd and Victor’s relational development wasn’t fully fleshed out on page, either. However, they had been hooking up many months prior to this book starting which gave us an established friendship, connection, and chemistry instead of strangers meeting. It’s also a sex heavy book which is to be expected with the status of their “relationship” prior to getting married.

I liked watching their growing pains and subtle changes as feelings progressed and deepened giving them a connection beyond sex. My favorite parts are the snarky parts though. The back and forth they have at the beginning is less frenemies and more foreplay. When they are “figuring” things out, they lost that part and I was a little bummed about it.

Life of Bliss is a low angst read with fabulous characters (😍😍Victor), syrupy sweet HEA closure- all wrapped up in a big ol’ ball of fluff. Recommended.

“I’ve liked you all along too. Even when I didn’t like you at all.”

Review: Catching Heir by Julia Talbot

Is he in love with an old hotel—or its new owner?

Professional snowboarder Cullen Patrick is successful and kinda famous. So when he inherits an old Colorado hotel from an unknown relative, he really should leave well enough alone.

Matt Nathanson has been managing the Treeline Estates since college. He loved the elderly former owner, and he stands to inherit the place if no one claims it in the next week. Of course, Cullen shows up, and Matt thinks it’s time to move on. He doesn’t want to like Cullen, no matter how engaging the guy is, or how hunky.

Cullen has grand ideas for the Treeline, but he doesn’t want to implement them without Matt, and he’s not sure he’s ready to give up snowboarding. Can Matt convince Cullen that putting down roots is worth it… and maybe catch his heir at the same time?

This was a sweet and light read from the Dreamspinner Press House Line that I am head over heels for.

Cullen Patrick is a professional snowboarder who out of the blue, learns his is the owner of the Treeline Estates that was owned by his estranged grandfather, Ben Patrick. Not just estranged, Cullen had never met the man and only heard the non-favorable tales from his late father. When Cullen decides he wants to check out the Colorado historic hotel, we get to meet Matt.

Matthew Nathanson has been the manager of the Treeline since Ben Patrick met him right as he was graduating college and hired him on the spot. Matt and Ben became fast friends and it was Matt who was taking care of Ben in his last years before his passing. Also, as far as Matt knew there were no living relatives and he would become the owner and manager of the Treeline but Cullen shows up smack in the middle of Matt renovation the hotel.

At first meeting, the men don’t really take to one another. There is an edge of indifference from Cullen and a feeling of jealousy and dislike from Matt. They are opposites on the surface, but a few late night kitchen chats, carbs and desserts shared, it leads the men on a path of friendship and more.

This was a fun read as we watch Cullen and Matt become friends and see one another as more than competition. Matt gets that Cullen isn’t just someone who wants to push him out of the job that he loves and Cullen sees Matt as a link to the grandfather he never knew. When a night of treating themselves after errands to renovate the hotel, the men begin their romance and it was sweet but oh so sexy.

Matt was a lovely man to get to know. I adored it when he would go full on Texas not only with his speech but his actions. He wasn’t stodgy at all and had his own moments of pure UNF and swoon right along with his partner, Cullen. The men really were fun and the whole deal with Ben’s old apartment was a blast to watch it transform.

The bits with Cullen’s friends coming out and the ex that showed up were a bit dramatic but fitting for the story. I loved how Matt handled it all and how Cullen dealt with Tony. Watching the men deal with the issue of an ex and not going all “I know what’s best for you” or some level of miscommunication was lovely to read. Matt and Cullen dealt with every problem or issue as adults in a committed relationship.

I liked that the story was light on the angst and the only true angst I felt was when they would say those three words to one another. I loved that Cullen found his home with Matt and at the hotel and went forward to make this historic location friendlier for what he loves to do, shred. Cullen was adorable when it came to food and I loved his enthusiasm for all things involving Matt. The romance was a joy to watch blossom and see how the men not only work together but plan their life together.

Review: Carolyn for Christmas by Lucy Carey

Christmas. It’s supposed to be a time for peace, love, and goodwill to all men. But not for two women when it comes to nabbing the solo spot in the big Christmas concert. To get that spot, they’ll do whatever it takes…

Carolyn Roche and Saoirse Barrett have known—and hated—each other for a long time. Their lives have been dedicated to one-upping each other. Carolyn has worked hard to shake off her poor roots, landing a top job at a major accountancy firm. Saoirse has worked just as hard to set up her own business in the vain hopes of impressing her tough father.

They’re equally matched in life—and in vocal talent. But neither is willing to let the other woman win.

That is, until they find themselves trapped in their old school, with just a bottle of vodka and their memories for company. There, they discover that the hatred they feel for each other might not be hatred after all…

Sidenote to Author: Thank you Lucy Carey for taking the time to introduce the pronunciation of Saoirse’s name. Without it I would have been completely lost and distracted trying to figure it out. Or relegated her name to S in my mind, as this is something I do when I’m too dumb to go on google and listen to a verbal translation. I really appreciate that you accounted for those of us who are hopeless at pronouncing people’s names.

Review:

Carolyn’s relationship with Saoirse has been a battle of wills since they ended their friendship in grade school. But every year they end up in the town Christmas choir together, trying to avoid each other, or staring daggers at each other, pretending not to feel anything.

Carolyn’s mother is dying of cancer, so this year, it is especially important for Carolyn to get the solo at the Christmas choir.

Or course Saoirse wants it to prove herself worthy to her pompous, high bred father. She is determined to snatch it from Carolyn and show how much better she is.

This childhood friends-to-enemies-to-lovers story was really well written. I enjoyed both characters, and their journey back to each other. I liked that they were both very strong women, both succeeding in spite of the pressures of their circumstances, and that in subtle ways, they made accommodations for each other, while pretending to hate each other.

The romance element worked well. I thought they were sweet together, and after working so hard to avoid each other, it was sort of the forgone conclusion that they would end up together somehow.

There is no erotic content in this story. It is strictly romance, with some kisses shared, and a lot of character building. The relationship building was superb, and the flashbacks were not annoying, but constructive, and allowed a glimpse into the relationship they had as children. I really appreciated it in a way I don’t usually enjoy flashbacks. These two sweet children were adorable friends, and I could really feel the sadness of the loss in each of them as adults.

A thoroughly enjoyable Christmas tale, with a somewhat happy for now ending.

Review: Hook, Line and Sinker by Piper Vaughn

When they were teens, Castor McCormick was the bane of Blake Kowalski’s existence. Their mutual animosity led to summers filled with rivalry. Now, nearly two decades later, Cas is moving back into the neighborhood to live in his grandmother’s old house. Blake tells himself he isn’t interested in seeing how snarky little Cas grew up, but when his mother dupes him into visiting his former nemesis, he finds out “pretty” can evolve into “sexy as hell” on the right man.

Cas didn’t think he wanted to see Blake again. No one has ever pushed his buttons like the arrogant boy he remembers from their youth. Turns out, the adult version of Blake still gets him hot under the collar—and everywhere else. With Blake on leave from work to nurse an injured leg and Cas taking time to move and unpack, they form a tentative friendship that turns into a sexual affair neither man can deny. But when Cas’s job sends him out of state to deal with a difficult client, their new relationship will be tested, and if they fail, Blake’s broken leg might not be the only thing to end up scarred

This book was pure Piper Vaughn delightfulness. I love reading books by this author because they are warm and snugly and I know I'm going to feel as though I've been wrapped in a cosy blanket. They're my hot chocolate on an Autumn day, my slippers in the winter...get my drift?

Some of Piper Vaughn's free short stories were what first attracted me to this genre as a whole, when you love love and enjoy reading romance I don't think you need to look further than this author. She manages to combine loveable characters with a great story and lots of UST. I always root so hard for characters in her books and this is no exception.

As an enemies-to-lovers, or frenemies-to-lovers really, story this is just wonderful. Blake, grumpy and stuck at home with a broken leg - it's kinda like caging a tiger and Cas is the bane of his youth recently returned to the neighbourhood. With meddling mothers and aunts and a desperately growing attraction, I love how Piper navigates the story. Between their youthful memories and current day situation it's a fine line between hate, lust and love.

Piper writes wonderful dialogue between her characters realistic and un-stilted. The writing is smooth and her stories are so easy to read. You pick them up and before you know it half an hour has disappeared.

I've enjoyed both of the books in this series and am looking forward to more. I would highly recommend this to those looking for a happy, easy, yummy read.

An arc of this book was provided in return for an honest review.
