Review: Dark Money Love by Ace Fawn

Akira Kazama is a man that gets what he wants. A loan shark king affiliated with the yakuza, he practically runs the money game in Tokyo.

Sora Nakano wants to save his mother’s life. When he has no choice left but to take out a hefty loan for her medical bills, he becomes indebted to Akira.

For Akira, business is always strictly business. And when someone owes him money, he always collects. Except this time, he wants more than just money from Sora.

He wants his body.

They agree on an arrangement for Sora to pay off the debt, and it’s supposed to be a win-win situation for them both. But Sora never wanted to be involved with the dark, hidden side of Akira’s life, and when Sora is threatened, he must turn to Akira for help.

Will Sora save his mother and get out of this alive? Or will he spiral down the path of dark money love?

Dark Money Love is a dark m/m romance intended for mature readers only. This book contains explicit adult content, weapon use and graphic depictions of death. Reader discretion is advised.

A criminal falls in lust...and then love?

Dark Money Love is a novella about 35 year old loner loam shark Akira. He's affiliated with the yakuza and collects debt payments for them. The book literally starts off with a bang with Akira collecting from an older, desperate person. Someone is trying to get over on him and Akira seems to be apathetic. He looks through his victims and finds young, innocent Sora. He knows Sora has no way of repayment especially with the high interest fees so he plans on coercing Sora to pay with his body.

Major dubious consent going on in here, consider yourself warned. And there are BDSM elements as well. I hesitate to call it BDSM as there is no SSC or RACK agreements. :(

Poor Sora doesn't know what's going on a majority of the time, Akira just blurts out to pick a "safeword" and poor Sora was confuzzled. Sora is an innocent in every sense of the word. He has no home, no friends and no one to help him with his ill mother.

We get glimpses of akira's world which seems interesting enough. Akira is kinda tsundere, he's cold but cares for just Sora, even from the beginning of their arrangement.

The writing is competent, but it needed another edit. It's the little things that can irk my reading soul such as one character puts on a condom and then in the next paragraph he's cumming raw in his partner. Did the condom break? Vanish? Was there a switcheroo on his didgeridoo?

I think another 10-15 pages to flesh out the main characters would have gone a long way with helping Sora and Akira's burgeoning 'romance'. I hesitate to call their softer feelings for one another a romance because they didn't talk to each other as much. If they would have opened up more, I think I'd believe it more. I wanted to like this more. I'm on the fence because I like dark plots but I also like the writing to match the style it was going for.

Would I read more from the author? Maybe, if the plot is good enough. I dunno if this is previous fanfic or if the author is also a fanfic writer, but it read like it.

If Nao’s father had kept the drug key in his office desk, what horrors would Nao find once he stepped foot into his father’s home? Nao would rather keep them buried for as long as possible.

Kurosawa knotted the gauze wraps with a tight jerk of his wrist. “The least you could do is not fuck a new recruit at headquarters. It makes it uncomfortable for everyone.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Last night with Hisona.”

“Hisona?” Nao blinked.

“You don’t even know his name? The whole house could hear you screw him all night.”

Hisona was much too forceful of a name and didn’t match Aki’s personality at all. So of course he’d forget it.  Apparently Aki could act enough to keep the whole household convinced. With only four days left before jail time, Nao was bound to need Aki’s acting skills again.

Nao grinned. “Aki really knew how to take it. Those recruits are so eager to please.”

“If you want to fuck one, take them to a hotel.”

Nao tried not to laugh at Kurosawa’s reddening face. If it was out of embarrassment or anger, Nao didn’t know, but either way he enjoyed it.

“Taking the time to go to a hotel would’ve killed the mood.” Nao trailed a hand down his own neck to his collarbone. “Have you ever been with a man, Kurosawa? They know exactly what to do during a blowjob.”

Kurosawa puffed out his cheeks. “Couldn’t you go back to the brothel?”

“I thought you’d enjoy me staying in for once. Besides, you’re not in a position to talk to me this way.”

Kurosawa gritted his teeth. “What I’m doing is for the good of the Matsukawa as a whole.”

“You should respect me more as the godfather of this syndicate.”

“Someone has to tell you what everyone is thinking.”

“Good thing they’re not speaking it because I’d punch them in the face. With you, I’m satisfied seeing you get demoted to cutting up dead bodies and burning the Matsukawa furnace once you’re replaced.”

“I’ll be more than happy to do any task that benefits the family.”

Nao laughed and grabbed his phone. He frowned; there were still no new messages from Kohta, which didn’t put him any closer to finding the dealer.

“Fujimoto called last night about a disturbance in his ward.” Nao grinned. “I was in the middle of getting a blowjob, so I told him to handle it. I want to make sure Fujimoto wasn’t an idiot.”

Excerpt

Why was Akira looking at him like that? That intense gaze made Sora’s stomach churn. When Akira’s eyes swept over his body, Sora shifted in his seat. Akira was a handsome man, and Sora wasn’t used to this type of attention. The silence was unsettling, suffocating, and Sora was drowning in it.

“I have nothing,” Sora said, his voice broken.

“So…you don’t have any personal belongings worth enough to sell, no job or income. And…based on your file, you live in an internet café, correct?”

Sora nodded, his head down. He felt shame, sharp and searing like razor blades in his veins. What would his mother say if she saw him now? He was an embarrassment.

“Why an internet café?”

Sora shrugged. “Rent is cheap.”

“What did you spend all that money on?” Akira asked.

Sora didn’t speak. He stared down at his shaking hands, his eyes burning with impending tears. He sniffled, cheeks hot and breathing laboured.

“How will you pay off your debt?” Akira asked.

“I don’t know,” Sora whispered. Tears spilled onto his cheeks, but he didn’t bother to wipe them away.

“At this rate, your debt will triple by the end of the month. And with no sure way to pay it back, it’ll be far worse than what it already is.”

Sora started to sob. He kept his head down, tears dropping in big globs onto his jeans, staining the fabric a darker shade of blue.

He couldn’t pay back a thing. What good was he, then?

Would Akira have him killed? Sora wondered where the authorities would find his body once they were done with him.

Akira stood from his chair and rounded the desk. His cologne was intense as he stood next to Sora and wiped the tears off his cheek with the pad of his thumb.

Sora stifled a gasp and looked up at Akira, his eyes wide and bloodshot with tears.

“Crying will not change a thing.”

“Then what do I do?” Sora asked, his voice shaking. He felt like chum in the water.

Akira chuckled, his voice low. “You pay me back.”

“But I already told you I can’t pay you back. I have nothing.”

“Yes, you do. You have yourself.”

“What do you mean?”

He saw it then, the smirk twisting up at the corner of Akira’s lips. Sora’s cheeks burned, and his stomach squirmed.

“You know what I mean,” Akira said. He walked back to his chair behind the desk and sat down.

Sora frowned. “You can’t expect me to—”

“I expect you to pay me back one way or another, Sora. And since you have nothing else to give me, you can pay back your incurred debt with your body.”

That squirming sensation in the pit of Sora’s stomach worsened. His head spun. Sora wanted to block out Akira’s words, he wanted to get up and run out of the room, but all he could do was sit there, staring.

“Ten thousand yen will be deducted from your account after each service. That is a sure way to settle your debt.”

This didn’t feel real. Akira couldn’t be serious.

“But I can’t do that!” Sora exclaimed.

Akira’s gaze darkened, his voice firm. “You can, and you will. You owe me, Sora. And I’m going to make sure you pay me back.”

“There has to be another way.”

“Like what, Sora? The bank won’t give you a loan, so you can’t give me their money. The government won’t help you. Many people in your position commit suicide, but that would be such a terrible waste. And if you went to the wrong people asking for money and couldn’t pay them back…well…that’s a sure way to get yourself killed.”

Sora stared at Akira. What choice did he have? There was no way Sora could get out of this. If he didn’t want to end up dead on the street, he’d have to go through with it.

Akira watched him, waiting. “So what will it be?”

It all felt surreal, like it wasn’t even happening in the first place.

Sora sniffled and wiped his eyes. He took in a few breaths, trying to calm down. “When…when will we start?”

“Our business arrangement will take effect tomorrow evening if you agree,” Akira said.

Sora hesitated. “Does that mean you’ll sell my body off to anyone and everyone?”

Akira narrowed his eyes. “I am not a pimp, and besides, I don’t like sharing.”

Sora’s cheeks flushed. He let out a shaky breath. What was he getting himself into?

“You’ll be servicing me only,” Akira said.

Sora couldn’t nod. He couldn’t even swallow the damn spit in his mouth, let alone speak. He was stuck, staring into that rapturing gaze. This was it. No turning back.

Excerpt

January sucked. Hayato always started it with a New Year’s hangover. Then came the anniversary of the worst day of his life. And that wasn’t including the cold. At least the snow was pretty sometimes, but January storms usually skipped the happily-ever-after fluffy snow and went straight to freezing rain of doom. No matter how many layers Hayato wore, he always froze his balls off. The whole month should be tossed out like a used condom in a love hotel’s trash.

If he stayed in bed, he could pretend the calendar had never turned. He could go back to sweet December when nothing bad ever happened and the world was a blur of sales and romantic dinners. Or maybe he could stick with his current plan to spend the whole month of January drunk until the thirty-one days of hell passed and February dawned, if not warmer, at least a little brighter.

He hugged his pillow closer, then gagged, his sinuses assaulted by the stench of sweat and cum. Like the hangover wasn’t bad enough. Only January 1 and already the month had lived up to its reputation as the one of suffering and hatred.

Hayato threw the pillow off the bed and rolled onto his back. Furry pink walls shocked any remaining sleep out of his system. The matching sheets and heart-shaped tufted headboard confirmed it. He’d spent the night at a love hotel. No big deal. No one wanted to spend New Year’s alone. The sound of rushing water in the bathroom signaled Hayato needed to leave before things got complicated.
