Welcome to Mentis University, your name is Joseph Smith and you've been unremarkable all your life. No - really, you've been absolutely, unequivocally, insert-smart-word-here mundane since the day the doctor slapped your ass and you let out a sigh. HOWEVER, you did manage to achieve one thing this year - you transferred to a better college. Bravo! (Mentis University has been rated number 2 on Top 10 worst colleges to attend for the last seven years... Guess where you were before this)

Since no one else from your hometown of - insert rural American town here - managed to claw their way out of mediocrity, you decided there was no point in hiding anymore. And thus, at an energetic twenty-one years old, you're now an openly gay man. Congratulations.

Of course, there's not much point in being openly gay if there are no gays to be in your opening. So, after spending a few days getting accustomed to your new life, you flopped onto your single bed, closed your eyes, and prayed to the lord... (And you're still waiting for the day Cher tweets you back)

"Please," you begged. "Guide me to a man who will treat me right... or pound me like a piece of veal."

Luckily for you, someone was listening...

Dear Reader

You will assume the role of Joe Smith (first-person, present tense) and guide him through his final year of college. Don't worry, you won't be expected to do anything as absurd as learn mathematics, but you will, on occasion, be provided with choices that will impact the outcome of the story.

Lost in a Book - 3 Hearts

I’ll be honest, I was squeeing for this before I ever read the blurb. This is my first foray into CYOA as an adult. I was obsessed with them growing up and didn’t even know they had an option for them in romance. *dreamy sigh* There are times when I read and just want to yell at the characters in a book for the decisions they are making and this format obviously puts the power in my hands…. which apparently I was pervy AF when I started because WHOA… that was quite a rabbit hole I fell down.

Campus Life puts you in the driver’s seat of college senior, Joe Smith. You are faced with decisions of the student variety from roommate fights to coffee crisis and coming out to lusting after a hot ass professor.

There are a plethora of directions to go, with completely different outcomes. It’s a short, quick, and OTT read. This isn’t a deep story where you leave with new appreciation for life and humanity. It’s silly, lacks depth with characters and plot, and even the less sex focused choices end in lots of sex. I went super pervy the first time through *shrug* and ended up saying “Yes, sir” and being on board with being called a slut. *shrug* There was a tad more character development when I went the complete opposite route and wanted to find a nice guy with more substance than filling holes… still had lots of sex but there was a tiny bit more to that story than me being on my knees.

It was a light, quick, and entertaining read. Recommended for fans of CYOA-pornyland looking for a break from serious.

Fantasy Living - 3.75 Hearts

I had a lot of fun reading through the fifty zillion (not really that many, but more than 2) story arcs in this book.

I came to three conclusions.

1 - I really missed choose your own adventure style books
2 - The author may or may not have a thing for 6’2”+ men
3 - Joe is thirsty as fuck.

I’m not sure Joe came across a male he didn’t want to bend over for. Which worked out well for this multi arc erotica (and me).

I’m not even going to tell you all the ways Joe bends over because those are spoilers and I think you should just read the book for yourself.

I didn’t manage to read all the endings (there are a lot) but I got through what I believe are the main story arcs and also flipped through a few alternate endings because that’s the type of person I am.

I could probably go another round or three just because it was fun the first zillion times. I never got bored. I liked the author’s voice and some bits made me laugh out loud (in real life!).

A few things squicked me out, and there was some content that was over fetishised for my taste. Some problematic content in one of the arcs did not bring me joy.

Each story line is pretty short so you could get through most of it in a day. There isn’t a high amount of character building but what is there works well.

In this style I would definitely read more from this author and if you need something really light, high in erotic content, and good for some giggles, this is the book for you.

If you choose right, you may even get a HEA ;)

EXCERPT
Before I know it, I’m weaving my way through a swarm of cosplayers, getting handed leaflets for pop-up stores and being bombarded with free samples of anime-inspired cakes. Having so many people crammed into a single room makes the air humid, palpable. The scent of sizzling hotdogs infuses with the buttery popcorn and crepe stands. The body odor oozing from the heavily costumed teens causes me to recoil whenever we cut through a large group, and my shoes stick to the floor every other step like we’re treading through the filthiest of nightclubs.

Man, this place is packed wall-to-wall with sweaty basement dwellers (much like the person writing this book) and hot nerds alike. There’s queues at every booth and tables with D-list voice actors outlining the various manga and comic book stalls. There’s even a makeshift arcade setup with cabinets ranging from 80’s classics to modern VR titles.

So much to do, so much to see, and yet the one thing that draws in my gaze is the beaming grin on Kai’s face. He looks elated to be here, and I think a part of that has to do with me being here with him…At least, I hope so.

“How many of these have you been to?”I ask, loudly, trying to speak over the cheers and laughter that fill the room.

“This is my fifth!”he calls back, pulling me along by my wrist as he leads me to the comic stalls. “What do you think?”

“I think it’s…lively,” I reply, getting a whiff of unwashed armpit as I squeeze myself between two burly men.

Gag. People should only be allowed to smell like that mid-orgy.

We continue trudging our way through the crowd when suddenly, we’re swallowed by the shadows of the bookstacks and the thousands of comics they hold. Kai releases me mid-aisle and dashes toward a specific pile of pricy-looking omnibuses, and I linger behind him, appreciating his bulbous buns and thinking of all the things I’d like to do to him.

“Have you read Crisis on infinite earths?”he asks, flicking through the pages of said book.

“Erm…”

“What about The killing joke? Or Secret wars? Or Infinite crisis? Did you read the Alias comics before Jessica Jones went to Netflix? Oh –oh, have you read the original Civil War? They changed so much, but I get it. I don’t think they’d ever be able to do a proper adaptation even if they had all the rights to their characters back.”

The prequel to the sequel. Seeing Red: Interlude bridges the gap between the final numbered chapter of Seeing Red: Scorched and the epilogue that follows it.
Christmas has arrived. Isaac and Kyle are under constant surveillance from the newly formed Princes' Guard at Moss, Aiden and Troy's request. Their nest has been pulled in different directions, leaving the two of them alone at a time usually spent with family. Kyle sees that Isaac is struggling with his separation from Moss and decides to introduce him to a new aspect of the 'Paranorm' world. Meanwhile, the consequences of Isaac's actions a year prior begin to manifest in an unexpected form, which puts himself - and everyone around him - in harm's way once more.

* This is the sequel to Seeing Red: Scorched and shouldn't be read as a standalone

EXCERPT

His large tattooed arms were crossing his massive chest, poking out of a black t-shirt tight enough to show every crease and line that made up his abs and pecs. His hair was a wavy mess of dark brown, flowing in the breeze of the open door. His red eyes were glistening, wide, and aimed right at me with what I hoped was affection emitting from them. However, out of everything; every feature, every core-shaking detail, what I’d missed the most was the intensity of his presence.

When Moss looked at me, nothing else existed.

“Don’t cry,” his words came out cold and direct, as always.

“I wasn’t going to cry!” I stomped my feet and raised a hand to wipe a tear away before it could fall.

“You’re doing it.” He stepped forward.

“Yeah, well, I have a hangover, I’m emotional.” I stepped forward.

“You’re always emotional.”

“You’re always an asshole.”

We met in the center of the room; our bodies nearly touching, our eyes luminous, our veins pulsing.

“You okay?” he asked as he towered over me with a blank expression.

“Things are looking up,” I replied with a smile.

Review: Seeing Red (Scorched, #1) by T.C. Orton

Down the twists and turns of the London alleyways, where Chinatown meets the highstreets, lies a small venue where unknown rock bands often play to crowds of less than one-hundred.

Isaac is nineteen, living on the sofa of his best friend’s brother – Eric – after his bible-loving parents tossed him aside because of his sexuality. After two years of struggling to make sense of his life, Eric and Charlotte convince Isaac to attend Red’s gig; an up and coming rock band with a small cult following.

All hell breaks loose and Isaac is left injured, with the whereabouts of his friends unknown and his body crippled on the ground. It’s then that the four members – Troy, Nicolai, Kyle and Moss – aid Isaac by infecting him with a ‘magical’ virus that grants immortality in exchange for consuming blood.

The ‘Paranorm’ world is exposed to Isaac. Vampires, werewolves and warlocks lurk in the depths of the city he has lived in his entire life, but he won’t become one with the night until he completes his nine-month transition, leaving him in the hands of the band and at the mercy of vampire politics.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

This story is part of the Omega Moon universe, but is a standalone tale.

This story is a gay vampire romance featuring intimate scenes.

Isaac is a sweetheart, and of course isn’t at all prepared to find himself in transition to be a Vampire. But with Nicolai’s loving care, along with his new friends Kyle and Troy, who all share a nest with the steely Moss, he will get through this.

I thought this was fun. The world-building was thorough. I understood what was going on from the beginning, and I really enjoyed how Isaac transitioned on his journey.

His relationship with Nicolai was sweet and nurturing, and as Isaac develops a darker side, the relationship becomes a little less shiny.

I like that Isaac had enough presence of mind to wait to be with Nicolai. I liked getting to know Isaac and the other characters. His interaction with Kyle brought out a more playful side to him, and I thought the dynamics in the nest worked well, even with Moss who was reclusive and unapproachable.

The UST was sexy, and I really enjoyed where the relationships went. It was pretty perfect actually. Saying more would be spoiler-ish.

I haven’t read any other stories in this world, or by this author so I can say with certainty that this can be read as a standalone. I did not feel lost at all, and there were no real references to any other story. This world was developed fully in this book.

Recommended for those who enjoy Urban Fantasy and slow burn romance.

EXCERPT #1

“You don’t have to.” Nicolai seemed to notice my hesitation.

“I want to,” I replied as I began to shift my body down the sheets, my face dropping closer to Nicolai’s to plant another kiss on his lips before my mouth moved to his neck.

I used my tongue to leave a trail of saliva from the tip of his earlobe, down between his pecs and over his hard abs until I was knelt at the foot of the bed with my mouth hovering around the waistline of his jeans as my entire body began to shake with nerves. I wanted this; I really wanted this, but what if I was no good? At least if we were doing everything then I could rely on Nicolai to lead the way, but this required some talent on my part.

Nicolai reached down, undoing the button on his jeans and sliding the zipper down as he used his free hand to ruffle my blonde locks that I just realized might get in the way. I ran a hand through my hair, pushing the strands over my shoulders and hoping that they’d stay put. I reached out, grabbed the tip of Nicolai’s jeans and tugged them down, also bringing his black boxers down with them and causing his thick shaft to spring up in all its glory.

EXCERPT #2
I took a moment. Breathing deeply. Letting my chest rise and fall slowly. Composing myself before forcing a smile onto my quivering lips, and then I turned around to head back downstairs, as if I wasn’t fazed at all. Only, when I shifted my body towards the exit, Moss was standing with his cold stare fixed on me.

“I’m fine,” I said quickly in my defense.

Moss sighed. He began walking towards his room and turned his head from me.

“Didn’t ask,” he replied in a gentler tone than usual as he took his messy, green hair into his bedroom and slammed the door shut behind him.

At least I didn’t have to worry about him smothering me with overbearing affection anytime soon.

CHARACTER INTERVIEW

T.C. Orton interviews his characters from Seeing Red: Scorched, Moss and Issac. Let's see what they have to say shall we?

Moss

Q:Were you attracted to Isaac from the start?
A: Would I have fucked the whiny little ghoul? Sure, why not.

Q:When exactly did you know he was special to you?
A: Special? Don’t push it… I guess I decided he was worth saving in Hell when he took on that werewolf.

Q:Was Isaac the first person you sired?
A: No.

QUICK FIRE QUESTIONS:

Top or Bottom? Top.

Cuddle or Own space? Own space.

Smooth or Hairy? Whatever.

Cloudy or Sunny? Are you an idiot?

Daytime or Nighttime? Yes, you are an idiot.

Underwear; Yes or No? No.

Best Food? Virgin’s blood.

Worst Food? Slut’s blood.

Favorite Position? Whatever I decide I want.

Favorite Body part on Isaac? I like his lips… when he isn’t whining.

Biggest Fear? I don’t fear.

Biggest Secret? Plenty.

One word to describe you? Whatever.

Issac

Q:Would you change back to human if you weren't in danger of dying?
A: I couldn’t now, not after experiencing what it’s like to be a vampire.

Q: 9 months without food, did you crave any one food more than others? Not including alcohol
A: Cheeseburgers! Kyle kept threatening to eat them near me if I didn’t keep in line. I’ve had plenty since changing.

Q:What is one thing you’re obsessed with?
A: I’m not really obsessed with anything, but I’ve been working on my keyboard skills since we decided to reform the band. It’s just me, Kyle and Eric playing now. Troy joins when he can, Moss is way too busy and Nicolai… well, he isn’t around much these days.

QUICK FIRE QUESTIONS:

Top or Bottom? Have you seen my boyfriend? I don’t have a choice, haha.

Cuddle or Own space? Cuddles are fine until you actually want to sleep, then I need my space.

Smooth or Hairy? Well, I’m smooth and Moss is… mostly. I don’t mind.

Cloudy or Sunny? I don’t really have a choice anymore. Cloudy.

Daytime or Nighttime? Nighttime.

Underwear; Yes or No? As in wearing it under my clothes? Yes.

Best Food? You really do have to try warm cinnamon blood.

Worst Food? I’m not big on seafood, maybe that’s changed now that I’m a vampire. Apparently, a lot of things taste different to us after the change.

Favorite Position? Again, I don’t have a choice… not that I mind.

Favorite Body part on Moss? He has the nicest arms.

Biggest Fear? I don’t want to lose anyone else ever again.

Biggest Secret? Maybe not a secret anymore… but perhaps I always knew Moss was right for me.

One word to describe you? Before my journey started, I’d go with “Doubtful,” but now I’d say optimistic. I think Kyle is rubbing off on me.
