Audiobook Review: Mastering the Flames (The Beacon Hill Sorcerer #4) by S.J. Himes

Guilt-ridden after the massacre of his family, Isaac Salvatore turned to binge drinking to escape the pain. Now twenty-four years old, Isaac is a recovering alcoholic woefully out of practice in the magical arts, leaving his fire affinity hanging on the edge of disaster. After a month of rehab, he returns to Beacon Hill and his family, determined to remain sober, learn to control his magic, and figure out a plan for his life that doesn't involve drinking.

Constantine Batiste is the oldest, most powerful vampire in the city. Born in ancient Gaul, the bastard son of a Celtic king, his long life has been shrouded in tragedy and horrors. Recent mistakes have left him wary and determined to guard his clan from all foes. When two of his clan members fall victim to an ancient evil, he summons the Necromancer of Boston for aid. Accompanying his older brother to the Tower is the handsome young fire mage once wounded by Constantine's arrogance, and their encounter reignites an attraction that burns within both Constantine and Isaac.

The answer to who is targeting the vampires of Boston is buried in the dark, early days of Constantine's transition to an immortal life. Isaac finds himself saddled with a painful insight into the evil cutting a swath through the supernatural population of Boston. While his brother, Angel, takes over the hunt to find and stop the threat to the city, Isaac struggles to find a balance between helping his brother and finding his own purpose and place in the world, free from his brother's shadow.

Falling in love wasn’t part of his plan, but mastering the flames that burn between him and Constantine soon becomes the most important thing in his life, even as an ancient evil seeks to destroy them.

Listening Length: 14 hours and 52 minutes
Narrator: Joel Leslie

The audio for the Necromancer's Dance was my first foray into Joel Leslie, and though it was a very interesting introduction, and though he’s not in my top 10 narrators, I will forever identify him with this series, which is a favorite of mine in the urban fantasy paranormal genre.

Again, Leslie brings the dramatics and all the characters to life, and I was entertained, enjoying my revisit into this world. It only hammered down that I’m jonesing for the next book that is nowhere in sight, and I need it desperately.

Of note, this was generously offered via new to me vendor, audiobooks.com. I’m not sure if this has happened to other listeners, but my reception via their app constantly shut off, having me either repeatedly push play on my phone over and over again, clear my phone and reopen the app, or just give up entirely for the time being and try again later. I have never had that happen with amazon’s audible app, and suffice it to say, I probably won’t be buying from audiobooks.com if I can help it, keeping to the tried and reliable true.

Regardless, thank you to the author/publisher for the audio in exchange for an honest review

“Thank you for letting me stay here last night, and for giving up your bed.”

Constans only nodded again, then gestured elegantly to a door off to the side. “The bathroom is through there. Fresh towels and toiletries await, and while you slept, I had your clothing laundered. If you like, I can call for breakfast while you get cleaned up.”

“Um, yes. Thank you.” Isaac threw back the blankets and carefully got to his feet, happily surprised that he wasn’t feeling like he would fall over or stumble. Being sober still felt weird, even after more than a month of it. Waking up in someone else’s bed and not having a hangover from hell was a rather novel experience.

Constans gracefully exited the bedroom, and Isaac went to the bathroom, finding a white marble and dark wood bathroom that was spotless, elegant, and understated while still screaming luxury. The toilet and nearby bidet were marble as well, and he chuckled at the thought of someone carving marble toilets for a job as he relieved his bladder. Probably paid extremely well. The rainfall spout showerhead and the four pulsating jets in the stone tile shower stall were an indulgence he’d sell his soul for and he stood under the pounding spray for longer than he needed, soaking up the relaxation.

He eventually dragged himself out of the shower, brushed his teeth and hair, used the unscented toiletries, and headed out to get dressed. His clothes were clean, and the frayed seam on his jacket was so expertly repaired that he might have been hard pressed to remember it had been damaged during the argument with Angel the night before. Isaac pulled on his clothes, grabbed his stuff, and headed out of the bedroom, following his nose to a small dining table in another glass-walled room, this one with a view over the harbor.

The view was slightly diminished and as gray-toned as the rest of the vantages in the penthouse. Very different from the specialized sunlight wards Angel fashioned to keep Simeon safe at the Beacon Hill apartment. There the light was golden and bright, with only the barest hints of magic on the windows to prove the protections were in place at all. Here in the Tower, the glass was chemically treated with industrial strength ingredients that blocked the radiant magic and UV rays that burned vampires. Despite the windows, he could tell the sky was bright and clear, and the view was still something to admire.

Two bloodclan donors were arranging the table with food, giving him polite hellos when he came in, and he waved awkwardly, not used to having what amounted to servants doing anything for him. When he was a kid, they had staff in the Mansion, but they died in the Massacre, and when Angel moved the two of them to Beacon Hill, they were alone, and Angel never hired a cleaning service. It had taken some getting used to for sure, a spoiled rich kid learning to do everything for himself, but trauma was a great leveler of privilege. The servants left once he sat, and he ate alone, though he had a concrete suspicion that if he were to whisper Constans’ name the vampire would appear immediately. He wasn’t far—and that didn’t bother Isaac at all.

Bacon crisped to perfection, a sweet onion and sesame seed bagel and smoked salmon flakes with cream cheese was his breakfast, a side of chopped fresh fruit and yogurt to finish it off. Earl grey tea with honey and a tall glass of lemon ice water complimented it all, and Isaac devoured the entire lot of it in minutes, hungrier than he’d expected to be. But then despite eating supper at the Italian place, he did empty his stomach the night before. He pillaged the tiny mints in a glass bowl near his water, crunching on the sweets, and he sipped his water, content to just wait and see what happened next.

“Was it enjoyable?” Constans asked as he materialized in the room, coming out of nowhere like some special effect in a movie. Isaac set his water down with a sharp thwap and laughed, startled.

“Fuck! Seriously? You did that before, when Simeon was hurt, didn’t you?” Isaac got up and walked around the table, stopping a foot or so away from Constans and squinting at the undead man. “How did you do that? It wasn’t moving in a vampire blur—the air is displaced when Simeon moves super-fast—always a breeze. No wind this time.”

Constans shrugged a single shoulder, casual and a bit teasing. “I am old. It comes with perks. How was your breakfast?”

Isaac hummed, biting his lips before answering. “It was perfect, but you knew that. You know exactly what I like to eat for breakfast. I bet you know what I like to eat for lunch, and my favorite meals.”

Constans didn’t even look abashed or ashamed—he shrugged again, and Isaac poked one rock-solid pec with his finger. “Are you stalking me?”

“No?” Constans sounded like he was thinking about it and might not be sure. “Not me. I pay many people in this city to do many things, and I know all sorts of things as a result. Not just you—I know your brother prefers things to be pine-scented, and that your best friend has excellent taste in porn. I watched a few myself.”

Isaac snorted. “I have no idea why I’m not mad.”

Constans leaned forward a bit, and Isaac turned slightly so he could whisper lightly in his ear. “I think you like it, mon coeur.

“Maybe. I’m also not the most stable of people, so there’s that.” Isaac turned so he could look in Constans’ bright blue eyes. “Or maybe I know it’s because you care about Simeon, and so you had us all investigated when Angel and Simeon hooked up.”

Lush pink lips twitched, and a beautiful smile broke free, made all the better by the fangs on display before Constans chuckled. A cold finger brushed along his cheek and Isaac’s skin tingled, and his breath caught in his throat. “Sharp as a dagger, mon coeur.”

“You shouldn’t call me that,” Isaac said softly, turning into the caress that slipped from his cheek down his neck. It didn’t bother him at all that Constans could snap his spine with a flick of his fingers or drain him in seconds. Once upon a time, not too long ago, he would never have been so calm near a vampire, despite frequenting their bars for the last few years. Maybe alcohol-induced paranoia was something he should consider. “I’m not your heart.”

“You know French, mon petit feu?” His hand, cold at first but warming with every second in contact with Isaac’s body, slipped around to the nape of Isaac’s neck and pulled him gently forward. Isaac breathed through parted lips, eyes locked on Constans’ mouth. He wanted a taste.

“I do, not a lot, but enough to manage. I’m not a ‘little’ anything, either,” he whispered. He couldn’t stop the grin at Constans’ low growl in response, a sexy rumble that lit a fire low in his belly. “Kiss me.”

His mouth was claimed before his finished the words, and he pushed into it, arms around Constans’ neck while firm hands on his ass. He groaned, tilting his head, and kissed back with everything he had. Constans gripped his buttocks hard and Isaac was lifted to sit on the table, legs spread, Constans between them. He ran his hands through soft, silky strands of thick blond hair and gripped tight, swallowing the sharp growl from the predator devouring his mouth.

Review: The Necromancer's Reckoning (The Beacon Hill Sorcerer #3) by S.J. Himes

Every action has consequences.
For a decade, Angel Salvatore has been the most powerful sorcerer and only necromancer in all the Northeast. Never one to ask permission nor apologies, he has acted with near impunity for years.
Until now.
The High Council of Sorcery has come to Boston, and Angel is their target. Charged with numerous violations of practitioner laws, his freedom and family are placed in jeopardy.
If found guilty, Angel's apprentice Daniel will be imprisoned to serve out the remaining years of his apprenticeship. Isaac, his brother, is too vulnerable to be left unguarded, and Angel fears for his sanity and health. And Simeon, Elder vampire and Angel's mate, refuses to see Angel convicted under the laws of the Council and his actions to keep Angel free threaten to start a war that could destroy their world. And Angel faces the severest of punishments—the castration of his gifts.
The Council has never cared for the people of Boston, and Angel doubts their motives. They have come for some insidious reason, and it has nothing to do with upholding the law and everything to do with Angel.
Dealing with an impending trial, a wayward ghost, and a graverobbing ring of thieves leaves Angel on the edge. He thinks he may have a handle on things until violence erupts across the city, and a stranger comes to town...a stranger with his own dark powers of necromancy.

This series just gets better and better, and what I love about this is the complex world that’s full of sorcerers and vampires and all sorts of supernatural beings that live in a tentative harmony with humans. Here, it’s that very harmony that is threatened when the High Council of Magic, a powerful entity that governs practitioners, expresses a not so friendly interest in our hero, Angel.

There’s not really any point in rehashing the plot. If you haven’t started this series, then I highly recommend delving into Necromancer’s Dance where it all begins. What I will say is that this is fast paced, full of action and magic, and never short on the power plays encompassing the complex magical/supernatural hierarchy that abounds.

Bit by bit, Himes reveals more about this fascinating AU and it wasn’t nearly enough. Let’s just say Angel and Simeon continue to make a formidable pair, and it’s their very bond that is coveted for nefarious means. However, they’re nobody’s pawn, and whoever deigns to think they’ll easily submit or succumb are in for a brutal rude awakening.

This had some editing issues for those who need to know. It was also more lite on the smex than the previous installments. However, those things hardly mattered. There’s enough to propel the reader through, including blossoming romances regarding brother Isaac and vampire master Batiste, as well as a nice nudge for apprentice Daniel towards an enigmatic fae. AND don’t forget the bestest cutest dragon familiar ever who steals every scene he’s in! I love you Eroch!

So, I obviously enjoyed this. The only thing that sucks donkey balls is the unknown amount of waiting I'll have to endure until the next book comes out! Darn!

Thank you to the author/publisher for a copy in exchange for an honest review.

EXCERPT
“What do you mean, I got a letter?” Angel held his smartphone between his ear and shoulder, fumbling with the keys to his office. It was still dark, and he huffed with impatience, blinking a small orb of hellfire into existence over his hands so he could find the right key. Inserting it into the lock, he opened the door and dismissed the orb, flicking the light switch by the door.

“It was delivered by courier about ten minutes ago,” Daniel replied, his apprentice talking past food. “I had to sign for it. The courier almost didn’t leave it with me until I told him I was your apprentice.”

Angel grumbled to himself, tossing his keys on his desk and grabbing his phone, rubbing the back of his neck. He left his apartment not even ten minutes before, which was only a couple blocks away, so the courier must have shown up right as he was leaving. He frowned, thinking back to the pre-dawn street, and he didn’t recall seeing anyone—not even a car or taxi.

“Well, go ahead and open it,” Angel said, tapping his phone to put it on speaker. Daniel made a happy sound past whatever he was chewing, and Angel snorted out a laugh. He booted up his laptop, looking for the appointment he had that morning at the ass-crack of dawn. Why in the world he thought it would be a good idea to have a private consultation so damn early on a Monday was beyond him. Which was why he decided on waking up everyone he lived with so he could share the misery. Though it was only Daniel since Isaac was at Nevermore and Simeon was at the Tower.

A sharp yelp and swearing came out from the speakers, and Angel laughed. “Papercut?”

“No! It shocked me!” Daniel gasped out, cussing under his breath. “I can’t open it!”

“What do you mean you can’t open it? Just rip it open.”

“I’m trying! Ouch!” Daniel yelped again, and the sounds coming from over the phone were parts hilarious and alarming. “I’m not risking my fingers. You can open it.”

“Who is it from? It might be warded if a courier brought it.”

“Now you tell me,” Daniel muttered, and Angel grinned as he found the appointment time. Daniel was finding his courage and picking up sass lessons from Isaac. His shy apprentice was learning all about sarcasm in the Salvatore household. His appointment was in about five minutes. No time to run back home and get the letter that was singeing his apprentice’s fingers. Daniel recited the address on the letter, “It says, ‘To Angelus Raine Salvatore, Necromancer of Beacon Hill, Boston, Massachusetts. From’…Oh, wow.”

“Who’s it from?”

“The High Council of Sorcery, Bucharest, Romania.”

Angel stood up straight, hands falling away from his laptop. He stared at the phone, the quiet in his office somehow loud, heart pounding in his ears. He looked up at the door as if any second one of the Council enforcers would blast through the doorway, ready to take him into custody for crimes sundry against international sorcery laws. He breathed in, breath shaky, and flexed his fingers. He reached out with his mind, cautiously testing the wards around his office, and there was nothing.

“Angel? Angel!” Daniel squawked over the phone, and Angel snapped free of the tension that held him frozen and snatched up the phone.

“Daniel, my appointment is any minute. Can you bring the letter here? Just hang out in the main room until I’m done if we’ve started when you get here. Wake up Eroch and have him come with you.”

“Um, okay…wake up the fire-breathing lizard, he says.”

“Just pick him up and carry him with you if he doesn’t wake up. He was sleeping on my pillow when I left. Don’t walk over here alone. I’d say hold on to it until I get home, but I have a feeling I need to read that letter as soon as possible.”

“Okay. Can I take a shower first?”

“You better,” Angel chuckled and hung up. Twenty-year-old men needed showers for the sake of everyone.

A knock sounded from the front of the office, and Angel took a deep breath, calming his off-center nerves before heading to answer the door. He was still cautious, sending out his awareness, his wards humming in the recesses of his mind, unmolested. There were two people on the small landing outside his door, their auras muffled by the panel, but they were both practitioners.

Angel opened the door, a polite smile on his face.

“Angelus Salvatore?” asked a tall, bulky man in a dark coat, his face set to glower. Angel lifted a brow, unable to see the person behind the big man. He could see a flash of red hair and a small bit of alabaster skin before the big guy shifted.

“I am,” Angel replied, opening the door wider, stepping back and gesturing them inside. His wards were set to allow strangers inside, but they would dampen any magic cast in this space by strangers or those he blocked. Came in handy when dealing with young sorcerers and unexpected guests. They could still cast, but his magic permeated the space, claiming even the ambient magical energies and stifling spells cast by interlopers. Not much use against a practitioner who used their own reserves, but the more dangerous, higher-ranked practitioners tended to reach outside themselves first before casting.

A tall woman was behind the big guy, slim and covered head to toe in black, from her leather high-heeled boots and ankle-length black pea coat to her black silk scarf and a jaunty, tiny pillbox hat atop titian curls. She was familiar, but the shadows were still dark enough Angel was having difficulty determining her identity. He led them back to his office, gesturing at the chairs in front of his desk. The woman sat, unwinding her scarf, her escort taking a stance beside the office door. Angel turned on the lamps as dawn was taking its time arriving and the room had shadows in inconvenient places.

The woman removed her scarf, putting it on her lap before shrugging from her coat. Her escort stepped forward, taking it from her before returning to his spot by the door. The woman, dressed in a thin black wraparound dress that hugged every slim curve and long line of her body, smiled at Angel. She was pretty, in a very human way, nothing of the fae about her in face or form. Dark green eyes, nothing at all like the brilliant emerald of Simeon’s eyes but arresting enough in their own merits, gazed back at him, glistening with wry humor.

“Lady Kensington,” Angel acknowledged after a moment’s pause, surprised. The recent widow was a wizard and a skilled apothecary who owned and ran Nightshade Apothecary not far from where they sat in Beacon Hill. Angel would see her occasionally in the neighborhood or when he needed supplies between scheduled deliveries. Her husband, Lord Greyson Kensington, died of a heart attack three months ago while shoveling snow off the front stoop of their shop one chilly winter morning.

“Call me Heather, please,” she said, voice melodic and rich, smooth as hot chocolate with a shot of whiskey. Her chin rose as if she was expecting argument. What Angel could remember of her husband, the man was a stickler for propriety and demanded to be addressed by his title, even to friends.

Angel never liked the man.

“Heather,” Angel agreed with a grin, surprising her into smiling back at him. “What can I do for you? And why so early? I would’ve come to the shop.”

“I’m afraid this matter requires a measure of discretion,” Lady Heather replied, twisting her scarf in her fingers. “It’s regarding my late husband.”

Angel paused, thinking. Usually when the recently bereaved came to his door, they wanted either the impossible, like a resurrection, or more commonly, a summoning of the departed spirit. He rarely acquiesced as nothing good could come from repeatedly dialing in to the Other Side. It kept the living from moving on and tormented the souls he would be recalling to this plane.

She must have seen some of these thoughts on his face, as she held up a dainty hand, forestalling his coming denial. “I don’t want you to summon him from the Other Side,” she said, tears gathering on her lashes. Angel waited, curious despite himself. “I want you to find him for me.”

“I’m sorry, I’m not following,” Angel said warily, hoping she didn’t cry. Isaac or Daniel breaking down he hated but knew what to do, a near stranger crying left him awkward.

“The shop was broken into three nights ago,” Lady Heather said quickly, words tumbling over themselves as she hurried to explain. “I heard the commotion from my apartment upstairs, but by the time the police arrived, it was too late.”

“What did they steal?” Angel was trying to follow along, he really was, but he had no idea what a burglary would have to do with her deceased husband.

“They stole him,” Lady Heather said, digging out a handkerchief from her tiny black purse. She dabbed at her eyes, miraculously not smearing her mascara.

Angel frowned. “I’m going to need you to spell this out for me.”

“The thieves stole Greyson’s ghost. I need you to find him.”

Group Review: The Solstice Prince (Realms of Love #1) by S.J. Himes

Rescued from slavers, healer novice Jaime Buchanan finds himself alone and free in Pyrderi, a kingdom of magic, mythical creatures, and a culture as open and kind as his homeland was cruel and close-minded.

Despite his rescue, Jaime is not left without scars, both mental and physical. Traumatized by his experience and hiding his gift, Jaime struggles to earn his place in the kitchens of Angharad Palace, the heart of Taliesin City. His former life as a student of the healing arts leaves him at a disadvantage in the kitchens, and his damaged state is becoming more apparent by the day.

One day, when necessity and fate intervene, Jaime meets someone unexpected—Prince Maxim, youngest son of the Pyrderian king, a sword master and a devastatingly kind man. Unaccustomed to powerful people with compassion and heart, Jaime flees. A cascade of events reveals Jaime’s hidden talents of healing, and he finds himself not in chains, but at the beginning of a new life.

This swift change of fortune opens Jaime up to new possibilities, including a smitten prince who cautiously courts Jaime, easing him away from his fears and reminding him that compassion and love can make him strong. The winter solstice is quickly approaching, and Prince Maxim shows Jaime the enjoyment and excitement to be found in a land that embraces the ice and cold, and the mysteries of all things magical. He learns to see the man under the royal mantle, and Maxim is more than even Jaime suspected.

The winter solstice is nigh when tragedy strikes, and Jaime learns that his past of grief and sorrow can be a pillar of strength for his solstice prince. If there is one thing that Jaime believes above all else, it is in the healing power of love.

Lost in a Book - 4 Hearts

*takes sip*

Ahhh, yes. This book went down like hot chocolate on a cold winter day with tons of marshmallowly fluffy goodness. I’m all warm and fuzzy thinking about the absolute sweetness that was The Solstice Prince.

I’ll provide full disclosure and admit that I chose to read this because the cover reminded me of a M/M Harry Potter. Not. Even. Lying. *shrug* I’m weak when it comes to that series. While it wasn’t similar to HP, it held its own special place in my heart with its loving kingdom, drama free plot, gifted healer, and a fierce but kind prince.

We are introduced to a broken down Jaime who had been taken from his home after the death of his father, sold into slavery to pay debt, and rescued by Pyrderi guards and brought to the palace. He doesn’t know where he is or the rules of the land so he keeps his head down and works the kitchens. Jaime’s very skittish from abuse and hides that he’s a healer until he heals the Captain of the Guard. This revelation leads to a whirlwind life change where he becomes properly acquainted with the dashing Prince Maxim.

Prince Maxim is the youngest of his siblings and absolutely smitten with the man he saw rescued from the slave ship. He makes his intentions known towards Jaime quickly and begins to court the shy healer. Prince Maxim is large, a hunter, and the best swordsman in all the land. But, he approaches Jaime like he would a skittish animal until he can coax him out of hiding. He shows Jaime that he is worthy, kind, gifted, and desirable. *swoon*

Guys!!! This book is drama free. It’s sugary sweet and Prince Maxim with Jaime is absolutely adorable. There aren’t any relational issues so the men are able to organically grow together in friendship and affections without the lack of communication blah blah blah hurdles. Although this book has a lighthearted fluffy feel, it’s not without minor angst and strong feels. Jaime’s prior circumstances and Prince Maxim’s impending heartbreak provide obstacles and instead of acting as a deterrent, it brings the men together. The palace has clouds of sorrow hanging over it and Jaime provides rays of sunlight to all.

I loved the Pyrderi people and its royalty. It’s an accepting land that shows love instead of scorn. The inhabitants of the castle from the King to servants were friendly, loving, and understanding of a man that was utterly broken and needed a place to feel safe and find himself again. They all celebrated the young Prince and his love to the blushing Jaime.

The Solstice Prince is a feel good HEA read that provided the warmth I was looking for. Could there have been more relationship development on page? Yep, but I just didn’t care. Sweet story. Lovable secondary characters. Swoontastic MCs. Fabulous cover. Definitely recommended.

R *A Reader Obsessed* - 4 Hearts

SJ Himes is quickly becoming a favorite of mine, and I really can’t find much fault at all with her newest release. Markedly different from her Beacon Hills Sorcerer series, this was simply a feel good love story blending historical, magical, and fantasy elements that will surely pique many a reader’s interest.

Kind Jamie, is rescued from a cruel fate, and though he’s scared and damaged, he finds some measure of comfort in the place he’s now in, a country that is most disbelieving for its benevolence and acceptance regarding all things. Making that transition easier is Prince Maxim who takes an interest in Jamie, and soon learns to his delight that there’s more than meets the eye to the timid young man. What unfolds is a seriously sweet slow burn as Jamie and his prince get to know each other, ultimately, falling easily in love.

Low on the angst with great hurt comfort tones that goes both ways, this is surely an unbelievably perfect kingdom Jamie finds himself thriving in.. Himes creates a world with many facets since not all realms are as open minded as Pyrderi. Luckily, this is just the beginning, and I for one will not be saying no to more stories from this interesting fictional world!

Jenni Lea - 4 Hearts

This was such a sweet, sweet story.  A deviation from her usual paranormal action/adventure, SJ Himes delivers a gentle, quiet tale of a remarkable boy and the prince who loved him.

To be honest, I wasn't sure I was going to like this.  It was so far removed from what I've come to expect from this author that I felt a bit off-kilter when I started reading.  But, as I got further into the story, I found myself smiling more and more.  I should have known that I needn't have worried; I have yet to read a story by Himes that I haven't loved.  The same great writing was there and the world-building was exemplary (as usual); it was just toned down a bit.  OK, a lot.  There was virtually no angst in this book.

Jaime was adorable AF and Maxim, a complete charmer.  All of the secondary characters were fully-fleshed and played their respective roles well.  I could have gone for a tad bit of angst, but for what it was, I enjoyed it immensely.

Recommended for readers who are looking for a light, sweet, no-angst story reminiscent of a fairy tale to pass a rainy Saturday afternoon or to cleanse the palate after a heavy read.

EXCERPT
At some prearranged signal, the crowd began to quiet, faces turned towards the canopy where the royals sat. Janis stood and moved to the rail, lifting a hand to the crowd. The people cheered, clapping and shouting the crown prince’s name. Prince Janis was popular with the people if he garnered that kind of reaction— this was not the forced greeting given to a leader that was feared or despised. Jaime still did not know who the king was of Pyrderi, but the future King was well-liked, perhaps even loved.

The people quieted and Janis shouted, his words echoing through the cloud air. “Greetings citizens of Taliesin City! On behalf of the royal family and my father, the king, I welcome you to the first official day of the Solstice Festival! Today is cold and the wind is sharp, so I’ll not waste any time! Would the priests please light the solstice fire, and let the festivities begin!”

The crowd roared in approval and there was a burst of smoke across the square. Two men and a woman dressed in gray robes were standing at the base of a large metal structure about the height of a tall man. The woman was cradling something in her hands that billowed out dark gray smoke and she tossed it into the weird structure. Bright orange flames promptly rose and the crowd cheered again. The royals clapped in approval and Jaime hurriedly copied their example, though he had little idea of what was going on.

Maxim leaned down and spoke in his ear. “The priestess is a Magi and she lit the torch with her magic. The torch represents how life endures even in the depths of winter. The winter solstice is in a few days with the festival ending with the grand ball at the palace. The winter festival here in Taliesin City draws in celebrants from around the country and even from some of the islands in the Straits.”

Jaime blushed when Maxim pulled back and gave him a swift wink and a charming grin. “Janis needs to stay and let the people see him for a while, but the twins are about to escape the cold and we have a tour to finish. The first day of the festival is just the opening ceremony since a lot of people are still arriving. Do you want to stay or would you like to finish the tour?”

“The tour sounds like fun, if you’re sure we won’t be missed.” Any time alone with Maxim was worth the icy chill.

“You two should escape while you can,” Janis said, having overheard Maxim. “I’ll be here until the cold gets too much, talking to courtiers and the like.” The crown prince stood over Jaime who blinked back up at him in surprise. For such a large man, he moved with surprising subtlety. Janis motioned to the lower levels of the stands, and the courtiers below were indeed standing and heading for the stairs that led to the royals’ box. “Unless you want to stay and get fawned over by the masses, Maxim?”

“I’ll save that for you, dear brother. Enjoy your day, and welcome home.” Maxim helped Jaime to his feet. Jaime was at a loss for how to respectfully say goodbye to the crown prince, but Maxim solved this by tugging him away with a casual wave to his brother and the twins, who hardly paid them any heed, tossing back small waves of their own before they went back to talking. Janis grinned at them both and tipped his head towards the stairs.

Maxim took hold of Jaime’s hand and took off for the stairs. They hurried downward until they came back to where the sleigh had dropped them off originally. There was a sleigh waiting for them pulled by the same strange creature Maxim called an oryx. Maxim helped Jaime up into the carriage and jumped in behind him. The driver snapped his whip, and the sleigh jerked into motion.

Their visit to the festival might have been quick, but Jaime didn’t mind. The way Maxim held his hand, tight and firm, like he never wanted to let go, filled Jaime with warmth and a slow burn under his skin, heating his cheeks in the chilly air. The prospect of spending the next few hours in Maxim’s company was incomparable to anything he’d experienced in his short life. Not better than the day he was freed from the slavers, but it was close.

Falling in love felt like learning how to live again.

Audiobook Review: The Necromancer's Dilemma (The Beacon Hill Sorcerer #2) by S.J. Himes

Even love can die without trust.

Angel’s brother, Isaac, has returned home, and the pair begin to make slow and awkward attempts back to each other. Learning how to be a brother to a grown man instead of a parental figure has Angel adjusting his behaviors and habits, and Isaac still remains a mystery. Was it merely entering adulthood that turned Isaac away from an overprotective Angel, or does Isaac carry a secret that will keep them from finally being a real family?

Daniel Macavoy, Angel’s new apprentice, is torn between his bond with Angel and the grasping machinations of his father. Dealing with a traumatized apprentice with dangerous holes in his magical education, saving Daniel may be harder than Angel first thought—especially since the biggest problem is not revenge, but guilt.

The one shining beacon in his life is Simeon, Elder vampire of Boston’s only Bloodclan. Four hundred years old and sexy as sin, Simeon is warrior and sage, patient and cunning. The strength Angel draws from Simeon’s devotion and the newborn mate-bond between them is steadfast and true…and the fount of death magic that animates the undead lord places Angel in the midst of a power struggle for control over himself, his lover, and his family.

Through it all, Angel is beleaguered by the unwanted attention of a troll-hybrid, the adventures of a dragon in the city, and a serial killer has decided to hunt the back alleys and midnight streets of Boston.

I must say that this is fast becoming a favorite, showcasing a top notch urban fantasy that boasts sorcerers, vampires, trolls, fae lords, and last but not least, a squee worthy, small, but spunky dragon. This continues to play on my nostalgia for when I gobbled up series like Sookie Stackhouse, Anita Blake, and Mercy Thompson. If you liked those stories, I don’t think you’ll have any complaint about this at all.

Basically, this is the continuation of the life and times of Angel, new mate to elder vampire Simeon. Their bond is a bit tenuous, slowly evolving and gaining strength, not quite permanent and solidified. Such a bond between a necromancer and a vampire has never been formed, and it’s sure to have unknown repercussions and consequences. As Angel and Simeon deal with their amazing new abilities that definitely increase their status, such developments also set them up as targets for all sorts of unwanted attention. It doesn’t help when their lives and powers are further tested as humans, and supernatural alike, start showing up brutally and ritualistically murdered, suggesting a threat with evil, dark intent. Of course, they’re the only ones capable and possibly powerful enough to address such a formidable foe.

What I enjoyed the most was the additional world building, the exploration into Angel’s abilities, and don’t forget, the evolving relationships he has with not only Simeon, but also with his younger brother, Isaac, and his new apprentice from a rival clan, Daniel. This was full of magical action and adventure, with some really yummy claiming smex. No complaints here!

Again, like its predecessor, Necromancer’s Dance, this was narrated by Joel Leslie. I admit he is not my favorite narrator, as he brings very over the top interpretations and accents to all of the characters, inducing the occasional eye roll, brow raise, and wincing at his various dramatics. However, thankfully the powerful and engaging storytelling overshadows the negatives of the audio, and I eagerly look forward to the next book! SJ Himes can’t write fast enough!!

Thanks to the author/publisher for the audio in exchange for an honest review.

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT

Angel stilled, even halting his breathing, as his mind tried to process what he was seeing. He wasn’t tired from handling the energy that flowed unending into his core. If he were to tap the veil, he would eventually grow tired trying to wrangle the chaotic energies from the other dimension, the place where all magical energy created by living beings and active cells in all substances eventually bled through. The veil was merely a form of expression that illustrated the divide between their current reality, their universe, and the next universal layer closest to their own, and in reach of sorcerers. And it took power to use power— and Angel already had more than most of his peers.
He was adjusting, even as it overwhelmed him. He was accustomed to the veil energy, and handling the death magic he could access through his mate was more than anything he’d ever experienced before— and because it was death magic, a magic he himself produced and learned to live with and eventually ignore unless actively searching it out, he hadn’t noticed. He was death magic, in a way, and he’d tuned it out. Like ignoring the sound of one’s own breathing or heartbeat.
Angel sucked in a deep breath, and let out an insane giggle, trying not to panic.
Mo ghra?” Simeon kissed the top of his ear, making Angel shiver. His panic receded, and Angel breathed in and out a few times, settling his nerves. As long as he didn’t cast he should be fine— should be.
“Arrest him for assault!”
Angel took a hand from Simeon’s neck and flipped off the crowd at his back. Strident complaints came in response, and Simeon chuckled, the sound so deep and comforting under his ear. He went back to snuggling his lover, and let Simeon take over. He was too volatile to do much of anything except to breathe in Simeon’s minty chocolate scent and try not to blow up the hospital.

In a world where magic is real and evil walks amongst humanity, a young sorcerer is beset by enemies, both old and new.

Angelus Salvatore is the only necromancer in all of Boston, and his name is whispered warily by the undead and fellow sorcerers alike. He and his brother Isaac are the lone survivors of an attack by an army of the undead, in which Angel used a spell so powerful it forever marked his place in history. Now, years later, Angel struggles to balance his career as a teacher of the higher magical arts, his role as big brother, and a tenuous relationship with an Elder vampire from the local clan. When his brother's boyfriend is used as a pawn in a mysterious plot to draw Angel out, Angel is once again drawn back into the old hostilities that fueled the Blood Wars and led to his family's death.

Leaning on others for help is something Angel cannot do, and while he searches for clues as to who may be targeting him and his brother, Angel finds his heart steadily growing occupied with Simeon, Elder and vampire. Dealing with death magic and vampires on a daily basis may leave Angel jaded when it comes to life and staying that way, but the more time he spends fending off the ancient vampire's attention and affections, the more he realizes he wants to give in.

Can Angel find out who wants him dead, and keep his heart safe in the process? How can he fall for a vampire, when his whole family was torn apart by an army of the undead? Death stalks the streets of Boston's historic Beacon Hill...and there is no one more suited to battle against death than a necromancer.
