Review: Three's the Charm (Maths #3) by P.A. Friday

James, Laurie, and Al are settling into a surprisingly easily life as a triad. Finally, things seem to be going well for them. But when an unscrupulous journalist takes advantage of Al’s blossoming film career and the men’s unusual relationship to write an exposé article, cracks begin to show. Can the three survive with their love, their careers, and even their sanity intact?

I have a strong bias when it comes to the Maths series. I’ve said it before in my reviews for the first two books, you must read them out of order to really get the emotional and romantic depth of these characters. Read One Plus One, then Love Plus One and then this one to meet James, his best friend Al and the love of their lives Laurie long before this story happens. Just trust me, it makes more sense that way and you need to know their story fully.

So, now that I’ve gotten that out of the way.
Seven weeks. Had it really only been seven weeks since the three of them ‘officially’ became a triad? Their lives had been so complicatedly bound up together for so long that it was difficult to work out where one stage had ended and another begun.
The book is told through the three POV’s of our triad, James, Laure and Al and that first chapter starts off so hot with these men doing what they do best, getting it on and making Al submit. I agree with James and Al that Laurie is fuckhot when he gets all dominant with Al. For someone who is quiet and reserved, Laurie knows how to make Al beg for what he wants and then give it to him until he can’t talk straight. It’s so freaking hot to read but while they are good at sex, it’s not what the book is about.

This book really goes into what these three meant one another as friends and lovers. When the question comes up on when and how do they tell Gillie – James’ mother, Al’s “adopted” mother and Laurie’s best friend – they are in fact a triad they men talk it out and decide it’s time they owned up to what their relationship means outside of their home. Of course, Gillie is Gillie and that whole conversation is amazing even if the three men were nervous as heck. It was great seeing them squirm and then wonderful for them to be able to show affection openly.

But while the triad is committed and yes in love, they accept each other for who they are and they know Al still has sexual partners outside their committed relationship. This has always been the case and Al never sleeps with anyone Laurie and James don’t know about and the men and women Al sleeps with know about his relationship with James and Laurie. But when Al misjudges a date and the date comes off with homophobic remarks, he forgets himself and mouths off to the woman. That woman happens to be a journalist and decides to take her rejection and her hate for homosexuals out on Al and his lovers in the worst way.
“We can do this. […] you’re not alone.”
“That’s the problem, isn’t it?”
“Would you rather be?”
“No,” he admitted softly. “You know I wouldn’t. […] My boys. My men. My blokes. Whatever. Even if the worst happens. They’re worth it.”
This article hurt to read and it hurt to have Al, then James and Laurie read it. This woman spins the truth into terrible lies that hurt this triad and made them question what they feel for themselves and each other. This book hurt and it hurt in that good way only angst can. Goodness. I knew that these three had a tendency to tug at my heartstrings but they go far beyond that and actually made me put my hand to my chest it hurt so much. There is so much self-examination in this and examination of the three as a triad that I loved it. I know some readers have a hard time understanding how a polyamorous relationship would or could work and this obstacle the three men face really give them an opportunity to dissect who they are and what they want. Make no mistake, Laurie, Al and James are in love with one another but the dynamic of their love and their relationship is tested by the damaging article and I loved how each of them took time to be truly cerebral about themselves and their relationship.
“You’re not very good at being loved, Al, are you?”
I adore the bones off of Al. I have from the beginning with his passion for living his truth and being who he is without apology. His parents were awful and left him alone when they moved to the States and his friendship with James has always beautiful. Al is a talented filmmaker and while being promiscuous, it dedicated to this new relationship with his boyfriends. But people need to stop hurting our Al. First, he was raped and though the horrific act brought him to James and Laurie in this new way, it hurt our Al and it’s unacceptable. Now, this bitch and a bad journalist takes shots at Al and his lovers that cuts Al deeply and this makes this ginger ragey. Al, though slight in stature, can handle his own criticism but when the journalist aims for his lovers, Al takes the blame and wants to do whatever he can to save the hurt off James and Laurie, even if it means leaving. But neither of the three could have predicted who would be the one to walk out the door after reading the article.
It had mattered so much from the very beginning. It mattered so much still. Laurie mattered so much.
Laurie, Laurie, Laurie. You broke me in the book and if it weren’t for what you gave James and then Al at the end, I am not sure where we would be. You always seemed to be the strong one, the oldest of the three who put his wants off for James so long to be respectful and then falling for Al was never supposed to be on your radar but you did. You love both of your men in ways you never expected and life without them is impossible to imagine. But what you go through, all that you thought you were was heartbreaking to read. Just thoughts of whiskey, broken glasses and a hard slap brings tears to my eyes. I am thankful it was all worked out but you put me heart through the ringer, Sir.
James loved Al to bits, and couldn’t even begin to imagine living without him, but Laurie was… Laurie.
James, dear sweet guitar playing James you started all of this. First having a crush on your mother’s best friend and then finding sexual release with your best friend to falling for both men, you began this triad with simply being you and you could resist you or your arse? You became so strong in this book, being there for both your lovers with compassion, affection and justification beyond what anyone could have imagined. I loved watching you grow and I loved watching you ask for something you never thought you’d want and get it. Your desperation for a resolution made you think clearly and gave reason to the situation both Laurie and Al faced. You are simply stunning.

Wow. Yeah, this book was good and I loved every word of it, even the ones that made me cry. Three’s the Charm shows the success of James, Laurie and Al becoming a strong triad in and out of the bedroom. The men have seen what they could lose and know all of it is worth fighting for. I got so lost in this story and loved how each man craved the other for support and comfort and… and… sigh.

Good book, was good.

Happy ginger, is happy.

Long review is done.

Chapter One
Al

The text was brief and to the point.

I hope you’re behaving yourself. L.

Al glared at his phone, as if it were his boyfriend Laurie himself. Up until that point, he’d been fairly successful at forgetting that he’d been driven to the point of madness the night before by his lovers, who had made him beg and then refused to allow him the satisfaction he was craving. Okay, that ‘forgetting’ bit wasn’t entirely true. He’d managed to deal with the fact that he was absolutely fucking desperate for a wank, or to get off in some form or other. And then bloody Laurie sent that, just reminding him. Rubbing it in.

Al wanted to rub one off, not have things rubbed in. But Laurie, who was not ‘just’ a boyfriend but—when they both chose—his Dominant, had ordered him not to. To wait for this evening. Scowling so hard at his phone that his boss, Fenella, asked him what the matter was (“Nothing”), he sent a one-word reply.

Yes.

There was silence for an hour. Laurie was probably giving a lecture at the university about filmography or something. Probably doing it well, too—Al had been to a couple of Laurie’s lectures in the past, and he was a good speaker, and knowledgeable. Al should know, as well: he was a prominent short film-maker on a minor level, though it was not a career which allowed him to devote himself to it full-time. Hence the job in the wine shop. During the text silence from his boyfriend, therefore, Al talked to various people about wine, advising them on which bottle might suit them best, and managed to ignore the worst of his frustration. Then the phone buzzed again.

Are you hard? L.

Al seethed. Well, if he hadn’t been before, he was now. He was bloody hard and fucking desperate. Laurie knew it—he knew precisely what he was doing, damn him. Al was tempted not to answer, to just leave Laurie hanging. But on the other hand, Laurie would be in charge once he got home. Provoking him to further teasing was a seriously bad plan. Hating his boyfriend, he sent the same one-word answer.

Yes.

The ‘fuck you’ wasn’t explicitly written afterwards, but Al was pretty sure Laurie would get that too. Ruffled, he texted James. James, his other boyfriend. Laurie’s boyfriend, too.

Your boyfriend is a fucking sadist.

Al smiled apologetically at Fen, who was looking unimpressed by the amount of texting going on in work time.

“There’s no one needing serving at the moment,” he offered.

She snorted and shook her head. “I suppose you’re texting your many partners,” she said, trying to sound grumpy but not quite managing it.

As far as Fen was concerned—and it was fairly close to the truth—Al slept with pretty much anyone who offered. He certainly had sex with a lot of people, but not only did he live with James and Laurie, he was also in love with them, which made rather a lot of difference. And, he admitted grumpily, the sex was best with them. Partly because Laurie was the best Dom Al had ever come across, and the only one he’d thoroughly trust with the submissive part of himself; and partly because…well, (a) they were both bloody marvellous in bed, and (b) all right, yes, because he was in love with them and it turned out that that did make a difference, just as everyone claimed. Damn them all.

His phone buzzed again.

Needing a wank? J.

Al had the distinct temptation to smash his phone hard against the counter. James was supposed to be showing a bit of sympathy. Which that was not.

Fuck off.

He got another hour, that time. An hour in which to calm down and to think about wine, and talk sensibly to a customer about which white wine might be the optimal choice to go with a nice fish dinner (“What sort of fish?” “Dead,” said the customer, helpfully.)

It was Laurie, again, when the text came.

You’re going to have to beg. L.

Al hated how much that turned him on. How much he wanted to be on his knees to Laurie, pleading to be allowed to come. Hated the visions which were flooding his brain after reading it. Fen was giving him a peculiar look, and he excused himself to the toilet. Not to touch—he knew better than that—but to try to compose himself a bit. He could hardly serve customers with a raging hard-on, and at the moment all he could think about was sex. Fuck. Bloody, fucking Laurie. Fuck. Al pushed a hand firmly (painfully firmly) between his black jeans-clad legs, squeezed his eyes shut, and tried to think about other things. Awful things. Running out of money at the end of the month. Stepping in a deep puddle and getting a trainerful of water. Anything. Anything but the thought of Laurie making him beg. Jesus. Eventually, he knew he’d have to come out or face Fen’s wrath.

“Sorry,” he said apologetically. “Not feeling my best.”

“Hmm.” Fen’s lack of belief would have been mortifying at any other time, but at the moment, Al was too busy trying to deal with his rebellious cock.

You’re hot on your knees. J.

Al hadn’t even heard that text come in. He’d picked up the phone to check the time—to see how long it was before he could go home and persuade his boyfriends (his absolute bastard boyfriends) to allow him to get off. He’d not replied to Laurie’s last text—potentially dangerous in itself, but he was damned if he was going to plead over his phone. Bad enough that he knew bloody well he’d break down and do it in person the first second he saw Laurie; he was not going to humiliate himself in writing as well. And now James, too. James, who knew him too damn well, and knew what a text like that would do.

Thought I told you to fuck off, he wrote.

The response was quick; presumably James was home from work.

Sorry. Thought you asked me to fuck you. Or was that last night? J.

It wasn’t murder if your boyfriends had asked for it, was it? Al had a sudden memory of the previous evening, where he had indeed done as James had suggested. And James had acted like he was going to give in, and then not done so. Fucking tease.

Al gave an involuntary moan, and Fen looked at him, eyebrows raised. “Anything wrong?”

“Told you,” Al said, hoping he wasn’t blushing. “Not feeling great.”

Unexpectedly, she looked sympathetic. “You can head home early if you like?”

Oh, bloody hell, that was worst of all. Laurie and James would rip the piss out of him something chronic if they knew about this. Fen offering to send him home early because he was so ‘unwell’. He’d never live down the fact that he’d been so desperate for them that he hadn’t been able to finish a day’s work.

“No,” he said, knowing his face was definitely red, and quite probably radish-coloured. “I’m fine. Honestly.”

“Okay. Let me know if you need to leave, though, Al. Honestly, you don’t have to suffer.”

Tell that to my boyfriends, Al thought bitterly. Apparently they delighted in making him suffer.

“Thanks,” he said curtly.

Thankfully, they left him alone for his last hour at work. Al was beyond relieved: today had been more of an ordeal than he’d ever had at the wine shop. It wasn’t taxing work, and usually he enjoyed the banter with customers; but today, with the constant erection pushing at his trousers, distracting his attention, making him need things he couldn’t have…it had been horrendous. He was halfway out of the door before the final text came.

Come in, take off your clothes, and kneel by the sofa. L.

Laurie had timed it deliberately for the moment he left work. It left a strangely warm feeling in Al’s chest that Laurie knew to the minute when he would be leaving the shop; he was angry with himself for getting so much pleasure from that thought, but at the same time it was very hot. The texts, he realised, showed that he’d been on Laurie and James’s minds as much as they’d been on his. They wanted him. His cock throbbed hard at the thought.

When he got to the flat, there was no one in the sitting room. Obeying his instructions, he folded his clothes up and knelt naked by the empty sofa. Where were they? What were they doing? As Al got used to the sounds of the house, he realised that Laurie and James were in the kitchen. He could hear voices, and then the sloppy sounds of kisses. The noises got closer, and he glanced up to see that they were in the doorway between the sitting room and the kitchen, arms around each other, frotting up against one another as they kissed passionately. God, they were hot like that. And, Al realised, with frustrated fury, they knew he thought so. This was a show put on entirely for him…well, maybe not ‘entirely’—James and Laurie were shamelessly obsessed with each other at any time—but the fact that they were simulating sex somewhere he could see them and not be part of it… They were deliberately teasing him, even more than they’d been doing all day. A frustrated growl burst from his lips.

James looked over, the faintest smile tracing his lips.

“Al’s home,” he told Laurie, as if it were a surprise.

“Mm-hm?” Laurie sounded supremely uninterested, going back to touching and snogging James as if there was nothing more he wanted from life.

And Al was going to bloody die if he didn’t get any attention soon. His lovers were stripping each other’s clothes off, kissing any part of each other which they could reach as they did so. James’s mouth on Laurie’s nipple, Laurie’s head thrown back in pleasure, a hand behind James’s head, encouraging him. James’s hands busy on Laurie’s trousers as he sucked, pushing them down, exposing Laurie’s hard, heavy, large cock. They were distracted enough that they wouldn’t notice if Al just had a quick touch. He couldn’t bear it any longer. His left arm slid round from its required position behind him to take himself in hand, and he gave the tiniest hiss of relief at the sensation of fingers against his erection. Too quiet for anyone else to hear, you would have thought. Except that Laurie, with some psychic instinct, was suddenly gazing down at Al, a feral expression on his face.

“Oh, no, Al,” he said, his voice dark and measured, his hand slipping from James’s head. “That won’t do at all. Did yesterday teach you nothing about obedience?”

James turned to look at him too, and Al swore under his breath. He was so, so fucked now.

Review: One Plus One (Maths, #2) by P.A. Friday

James Cape has been in love with his mother’s best friend Laurie since James was sixteen and Laurie an inaccessible twenty-six. When he’s turned down flat by the older man just after his nineteenth birthday, James’s best friend Al encourages him to forget Laurie and find someone else. And James tries, he really does. But can he cope with his feelings for Laurie, his best friend’s home-life problems, and the deteriorating health of his father, all at the same time? And will Laurie ever notice the young man who’s right in front of him?

Wow. This book has a lot of emotion in it that I wasn’t prepared for. Honestly, when I looked at the blurb I didn’t realize it was the second book in the series and that it deals with the past that becomes the present in Love Plus One. Being of an organized mind when it comes to reading, I am happy that I have read this series out of order because knowing the context of the first book I needed to know how Al becomes a frequent third for Laurie and James.

Told in the POV of James Cape, we meet him as a young teen who has a crush on his mother’s best friend Laurie. Laurie and Gillie, James’ mom, meet through classes and though they have an age difference it doesn’t hinder their friendship at all. Laurie becomes a constant at the Cape home being a friend to Gillie and James’ father Terry. Laurie is ten years older than James and is quite frankly the guy who helped James realize that he’s gay and James crushes hard on Laurie. The crush and his sexuality are kept quiet with only James’ best friend, since age 10, Al knowing the truth. Al teases James about his crush but being the ultimate best friend, commiserates with James on the unrequited love and faithfully treats Laurie with disdain when James is hurt.

When James officially becomes an adult and Laurie is finally single, James decides to lay his love on the line with the truth and lays a kiss on Laurie. Ugh. Laurie rejects James with the classics “this isn’t right” and “you’re young” and “our age difference” and “I’m the only gay guy you know so…” and “you need to experiment at uni” bullshit so James takes off to school and tries to sow his wild oats. That doesn’t work for James who consistently wants Laurie to want him back and makes a decision that if he does hook up he will only top, saving himself for Laurie.

Years pass at Uni with James having a few flings but no one compares to Laurie and seeing Laurie at home over the summers doesn’t help the infatuation. When James confesses his sexual frustration to Al – who is openly bisexual – James is offered a no strings sexual relationship with Al. At first this seemed odd to me with how close they are (Gillie refers to Al as her other son) but Al’s offer is so real to their friendship, I agreed right along with James to move forward.

I know this book is supposed to be about James and Laurie and how they will come to be an established couple in Love Plus One but let me tell you, James and Al together are hot. Goodness. There was more than one time I totally forgot about Laurie and the hopeless romantic in me wanting declarations falling from the mouths of these two best friends but it doesn’t happen. James and Al really are best friends who just happen to have passionate and off the charts hot sex together but keep everything else in the friend zone. They need and use one another without jealousy and honestly, it was quite beautiful to see.

So, when it comes times for more James pining for Laurie and Laurie keeping him at arm’s length, I was glad that James always had Al for whatever he needed. But that end? That admission from Laurie to Gillie about fantasizing about fucking her son and the swoon worthy moments that follow and then the intimacy? Yeah, this was a slow burn for sure between James and Laurie with a side of Al to be there for mutual, moral and sexual support.

Now, I am needy for Love Plus One and thank goodness it’s already out seeing how again, I read this series out of order. I hope we get to learn how Al becomes a third and how Laurie dealt with learning that Al and James had been fucking throughout the years Laurie was in love with James but trying to do the right thing.

Review: All About the Boy by P.A. Friday

Some men like gentle loving—others like to switch up the power. In P.A. Friday’s collection of stories, explore the raunchier, edgier side of lust—a space where domination and control can be the greatest turn-on.

From Stefan finding out the hard way just how straight he isn’t, Jake who has to learn to behave or take his punishment, to Kel juggling two very different lovers at his workplace, doing what you’re told has never been sexier.

What a hot little anthology! I'm rating this a touch higher than I rated the individual stories because as a whole I had a lot of fun reading this and all of the stories were incredibly sexy!

Pretty little Straight Boy - 4.5 Hearts

So good! Loved that sexy little short.

Stefan and Rufus (great name) have been friends since high school and are celebrating finishing university with some other friends. Everyone's getting a bit (lot) drunk and they decide to play hide and seek(?) with forfeits paid if they're found. So Rufus is on the hunt and when he finds Stefan he declares his forfeit is to suck Rufus’ cock. Oh one thing, Stefan is ‘straight’ (que eye roll) but he finds himself in desperate need for some Rufus cock in his mouth.

This had two super super delicious scenes featuring some light D/S and a college boy desperately needing to be filled.

“Please, what?” he asked softly, still pinning Stefan’s hands on either side of his head. He leaned over Stefan. “Please, don’t? Or please, don’t stop? Please, make me beg some more?”

There was enough character development and story to make me understand their dynamic and want them to end up together, but mostly it's just sex *waggles eyebrows*.

“Spread your legs for me, Stefan,” he murmured. “Just like that. I want you to see me, and I want to see your face as I take you. Spread your legs wide for me.”

Making Amends - 4 Hearts

Hm….That was hot and interesting….

Jake is Alessandro's boy, they have an open relationship with Alessandro having other lovers and Jake pleasuring them as Alessandro sees fit. Jake adores Alessandro and adores his life, except when it comes to Leo, Alessandro's long time friend. With the book being purely from Jake's POV we can't help but hate Leo as well, but it's obvious Jake’s dislike is pretty petty.

Alessandro was so handsome, so immediately magnetic in personality, and the majority of his friends were almost as attractive. Leo, however, was plain, even unattractive, with a prominent, beak-like nose and sallow skin. And his attitude always managed to rub Jake the wrong way.

When Jake openly insults Leo, Alessandro sees fit to punish Jake.

Then to make matter more interesting Alessandro hands Jake over to Leo for one night so Jake can really show Leo how sorry he is *snickers*. Let's just say Jake is bratty and Leo definitely gets his pride back.

Office Politics - 3.5 Hearts

So in this one we meet Kel, who is both dominant and submissive and enjoys the extra thrill of having sex at his office.

Kel is currently having sex with two men he works with (separately, they don't know about the other, but no one is exclusive), Peter who is submissive and Dean who enjoys beating up his partners. Kel meets with Peter first and my goodness that was so smoking hot! Exhibitionism people!! They have sex right up against the office window and then naughty Peter has to clean up all the mess he made *tutt tutt*.

Dean and Kel’s scene was really hot as well, reminded me a lot of Uneven (by Anah crow) but it went in a direction I didn't really like. Well maybe it would have been alright if it had had more closure. It didn't really make sense to have a ‘climax’ like this one in the story, just for it to end straight after.

Still super hot though!

Completely recommend this book for a quick compilation of some pretty darn hot D/S stories!

Usually, Jake liked to do as he was told. He obeyed Alessandro’s every whim and behaved impeccably—especially in the presence of his master’s friends.

Usually.

It was not because he feared punishment that he did so, either. Far from it. It was because he loved the look on his master’s face when Jake was obedient. That expression of pride in his boy—in Jake—and the warmth of his smile. Jake would do anything for that look.

Still, there was one of Alessandro’s friends to whom Jake couldn’t take. No matter how many times he met the man, he didn’t warm to him—had, in fact, an instinctive revulsion towards him. In his presence, the temptation to disregard his usual obedience was always strong. It wasn’t the fact that Leo had once been Alessandro’s lover—Alessandro had had, and continued to have, any number of lovers. Indeed, with Alessandro’s permission, several had played with or been pleasured by Jake. But when it came to Leo, the rules changed.
