He was supposed to be safe.

Captain Keyno Landium Shou is a Tah’Narian starship captain who has been granted the right to take a mate, any mate, he wants during the last harvest on Earth. Dale was seventeen when the aliens first appeared. His parents assumed he’d be safe since the final collection would be done before he turned twenty-three. He didn’t fall within the guidelines established, so they took for granted he had nothing to fear.

They were wrong.

Excerpt from The Harvest: Taken

I was seventeen when the aliens first appeared, so my parents assumed I was safe. The final collection would occur before I turned twenty-three. I didn’t fall within the guidelines the aliens had established, so I thought I had nothing to fear.

I was wrong.

Exactly one week before my twenty-third birthday, an extraction team showed up to collect me. My parents were distraught, and I fought them, but nothing stopped them from taking me. Somebody somewhere had made a terrible mistake. But no one would listen to me.

“I’m not supposed to be collected!” Men in SWAT gear dragged me to a waiting van. One of the aliens stood off to the side, watching. I dug my feet into the ground, trying to halt the parade of their progress. Two human soldiers were beside me, trying to secure my arms behind my back, but I kept twisting and jerking, frantic to break their hold on me. “Listen to me! I’m only twenty-two years old.”

“Son of a bitch, stop jumping around, you little fag,” the man to the right of me hissed as he grabbed at my wrist and twisted.

“Fuck!” I yelled as pain radiated up my arm. I managed to get my other arm free long enough to get in a good solid shot at the asshole who was currently trying to twist my hand off. I busted his nose. Anger boiled in his eyes as he whipped his arm back to strike me.

Before the blow could land, the Tah’Narian with the extraction team jerked the man away from me by the front of his shirt. Another human took his team member’s place immediately, but my focus was on the alien, not the other man holding my arm.

The alien lifted the human completely off the ground and shook him like a rag doll, snapping his head back and forth. The Tah’Narian's low growls sent shivers up my spine as he spoke to the team member. And his strength was astounding. The man the alien lifted wasn’t a small guy, by any means, and he lifted him with one hand. Then he tossed the guy to the ground, pointed at me and babbled something I couldn’t understand.

“I… I… okay. I won’t touch him again.” The team member stumbled back to the van, never looking back at me.

Good God, the extraction team and that alien could somehow understand each other.  Momentarily distracted, I didn’t have time to react when another team member handcuffed both my arms tightly behind me. Someone on each side held me tightly, determined to march me to that waiting van.

“Let go of me, dammit!”

“Stop fighting, kid. You can’t win against five of us.” The new guard fastened a second set of cuffs higher on my forearms. “Plus there’s that alien, too. You just saw his strength. The more you fight, the harder this is going to be.”

I slumped in their arms, the fight draining out of me. “What did it say?”

“Basically, that you’ve been chosen by one of them,” one of the guys from the team leaned down and whispered to me. “I’m sorry, kid. Never heard of something like this happening. No more talking, or they’ll gag you next.”

Horrified, I hung in their arms as they dragged me to a waiting van. I desperately wanted to ask him what he meant about being chosen, but after his warning, I was afraid to say anything. What the hell was going on, and why were the rules being changed all of a sudden? These aliens weren’t supposed to be able to pick and choose. That defeated the whole purpose of having a lottery system.

Audiobook Review: Dragon's Hoard by M.A. Church

To be loved by a dragon is to be treasured.

A hundred years ago, werewolf Alpha Montgomery took a risk driven by desperation—he borrowed money from the ancient dragon Warwick Ehecatl, putting up the pack lands as collateral. Now the debt is due, and dragons don’t forget—or forgive. Warwick demands Montgomery’s son, Avery, and three businesses as compensation. As an Omega, Avery knows he is basically useless to his pack, so he might as well agree. He soon has second thoughts, though. Warwick is fearsome, and he’s free to do as he likes with Avery.

Warwick knows his race’s reputation, and he even admits some of it is deserved. But he’d rather cut off his tail than let his innocent mate’s light go out. It won’t be easy, but buried deep, there’s something between them worth safeguarding.

Dragons! Fated Mates! Possessive dudes! Arranged Marriage! Virgin!

Sorry. I had a fluffgasm. I lie. I had multiple fluffgasms whilst listening to this audiobook. The shifter fluff is super cute, super fluffy with a couple of super sweet MCs who are crazy hot for each other just the way I like it.

Warwick is a very old dragon shifter and loan shark who entered into an agreement with alpha Montgomery 100 yrs ago. It's now time for Alpha Montgomery to pay up and guess who doesn't have the money? What he does have are some lucrative businesses AND an omega son that makes Warwick's dragon flail like a red panda. The red panda dragon will not be denied.

Avery is not happy with his father but it's mostly because of his poor money management skills because his wolf knew it's mate when he first set eyes on Warwick, who isn't exactly hard on the eyes.

From that point on I happily road the Fluff Express all the way to Happy Happy Joy Joy for all the days to come land.

The sights I loved along the way were Warwick's courting of Avery. Avery's adorable wolf form. He's so playful! Their first shift together on the full moon. The details of their shifts including their extra powers. Avery's never being afraid of Warwick despite the obvious power differential. How attracted they are to each other in every way. The PDAs were the best. THE BEST! They're both possessive of one another. How the tension built to a critical mass and Church didn't hold back when they finally do the deed. And everything after that had me all...

Dorian Bane's narration was eargasmic. I like the register of his voice. He does the deep, rumbly thing exceptionally well. I particularly liked his performance for Warwick and the accent stayed consistent throughout. I was slightly less enamored with his Avery but not enough to prevent me from listening to this story again in the future.

If you're looking for some feel good, low angst fluffy shifter goodness, Dragon's Hoard delivers.

Blog Tour: Dragon's Hoard by M.A. Church

M.A. Church is here today to talk a little bit about her new Dreamspun Beyond release, Dragon's Hoard. See our 4 ❤ review of it HERE.

Hey everyone! I’m M. A. Church, and I’m here to share my latest release, Dragon’s Hoard. The novel is part of the Dreamspun Beyond line at Dreamspinner Press. So, of all the paranormal being, why did I pick a dragon?

For one reason, they’re intriguing. References to these mythological creatures are found in almost every culture dating back to ancient times. While actual proof dragons exist has never been found, the mythology for them is universal, widespread, and seems to be everlasting.

That leads to another point of interest concerning dragons—their diversity. Some are depicted as having a snake-like body. Others are lizard-like. Some have wings, some are without. Some breathe fire and some spit ice. And don’t even get me started on their colors: red, blue, black, white, gold… and so on. Some cultures look at dragons as destructive and evil, while others view dragons as a symbol of power, strength, and good luck.

And finally, I just like them! Warwick is everything I find fascinating in a dragon: huge, can fly, and deep down, just wants the love of his mate. What’s not to like, lol?

Excerpt:

Startled, Avery glanced at the sky, a sky that was once again cloudless. “Ho-ly shit, Warwick.”
Warwick huffed. Avery was going to take that sound as one of amusement. With his feet still stuck to the ground, he stared intently into Warwick’s eyes, searching. There. There was that human intelligence he was looking for. Avery wasn’t about to ask if Warwick could understand him. Nothing irritated a shifter more, but now he understood the need humans had to ask.
“Wow, you are… you are….”
Horribly gorgeous. Beastly. Imposing. Intimidating. Threatening too, although Avery didn’t feel in peril. Maybe he was as empty-headed as rumors said Omegas were, because the creature in front of him could probably snap him in half with those powerful jaws. Which was not the most comforting thought, and he instinctively took a step back, but a low, rumbling purr rose from the dragon’s chest. Calmness flooded his system, a sense of well-being that quickly chased away the sudden spurt of anxiety. His nerves settled, and the wonderment of what was standing in front of him began to rise again.
“You are magnificent, awe-inspiring, and scary as hell.” Avery rested his hand on his chest as his breathing slowed.
The dragon—no, he needed remember to call him Warwick, not “the dragon”—rolled his eyes. He could almost hear Warwick saying of course he was scary as hell. He was a dragon, after all. Just like that, any residual unease fled. That was so typically Warwick. For the first time since Warwick shifted, Avery laughed.

R *A Reader Obsessed* - 4 Hearts

I haven’t read or listened to a lot of the Dreamspun Desires and Beyond series, mainly because I like a bit of grit and a lot more smex than what they can typically offer, but I will say that so far, this has been my favorite! Who can resist ABO dynamics plus a dragon shifter?? Not me, apparently!

Werewolf Avery is an omega, and because he’s an omega, he’s been coddled and fussed over his entire life. Some may flourish under such attention, but Avery resents that many think he’s weak and incapable, and since he’s been given very few responsibilities, he’s basically bored with his mundane life. When his father fails to make good on a business deal with a powerful dragon, Avery suddenly finds himself the consolation prize. A bit indignant and disgruntled, his tune soon changes, as his wolf recognizes Warwick as his mate.

Warwick is definitely at the top of the shifter food chain - powerful, secretive, a loner by choice - he’s a powerful dragon with endless resources and special abilities. When Warwick goes to collect his payment from the alpha werewolf, the last thing he expected was for his dragon to demand the alpha’s son. For the first time ever, someone has piqued his interest and is now the top priority.

What ensues is a really wonderful romance between these two, despite the fact that it takes place over a short 3 days. However, everyone knows this is totally acceptable in the paranormal shifter world involving mates, so it’s completely plausible to go from strangers to love in a blink of an eye!

As a warning, this has infuriating fathers being infuriating and no ABO heat cycles or KNOTTING. Darn! There is however, a surprising and pleasing amount of heat regarding Avery and Warwick’s “wedding night”, and it was all so sweet in how they work things out to best suit them and their future as a couple.

Again, Harlequinesque type romance typically does not appeal strongly to my usual tastes, but this one was a standout in my opinion. Thus, if you like these sorts of tropes, especially that of dragons and their mysterious lore, this was an unexpected enjoyable treat!

Sara - 4.5 Hearts

Oh this was freaking fracking adorable! This book has just a few of the things I love in my shifter romances.
  • Dragons.
  • Omega’s
  • Fated/True Mates.
Put those together with the sticky sweet formula that is the new Dreamspun Beyond series and you have one hell of a happy ginger on your hands.

The book opens up with a power prologue set 100 years in the past as Alpha Theodore Montgomery of the Sunset Creek Pack comes to an ancient dragon to ask for a loan. This dragon aka Warwick, is of the classic dragon persuasion who loves shiny things and has an amazing hoard which makes him stinking rich! So when Alpha Montgomery comes asking for one hell of a large sum of money, Warwick wants collateral.

Fast forward 100 years to the present, we get young Omega Avery Montgomery, son of Alpha Montgomery preparing for his birthday party and officially becoming a man. This party will be one the young pup will always remember when a tall dark and devastatingly handsome stranger crashes it and demands payment from his father. Yup, Warwick our filthy rich dragon has come for money and guess what, Alpha Montgomery decided to not save a dime over the last century and can’t pay. Tsk tsk tsk dude, you don’t stiff a loan shark and you definitely don’t stiff a dragon when he covets wealth.

But this party becomes a once in a lifetime chance for two souls to meet and with one look both Warwick and Avery recognize one another as mates. Warwick makes a deal with the Alpha--who can’t pay--that instead of the money, or taking everything Alpha Montgomery owns as he said he would when the contract was signed, he decides he wants Avery as a mate and three businesses from the Alpha. Say what? Yup, that’s what he wants and while Avery’s dad may be an Alpha, he’s spineless and agrees to trade his son.

He was in this position thanks to his father’s carelessness— and that was the nicest way he could put it. On the other hand, watching his father trade him off to pay his debt was disturbing. It hurt, plain and simple. He didn’t deserve this— no one did.
Avery’s dad is an ass, plain and simple. He tells his son he either agrees to become Warwick’s mate or be kicked out of his pack. I mean, WTF dad? It’s a terrible situation to be in, though arranged marriages seem to be the norm with these werewolves. It hurt to watch Avery be treated like nothing more than a possession to his family which brings us to the dragon business. Warwick is a powerful and very old dragon who loves his hoard above all. He is also a possessive man when he realizes Avery is his mate and though he adores his hoard, Avery to Warwick is not a possession. So yeah. There is that.

Now I have to say that while Avery knows instantly that Warwick is his mate and Warwick knows Avery is his, the story doesn’t play on the fated mate trope and that bugged me. I loved fated/true mates to no end. You are already suspending reality when you read a shifter romance and getting fated mates allows you to forgive anything that would normally case a Scooby Doo head tilt because you know the deal. They can’t help themselves when it comes to how they feel, how fast they fall and how bad they want to fuck. But these two, while showing signs of the trope they never speak of it to anyone. It sucked that Avery was traded for a debt owed but at the same time, dude you found your true mate and isn’t that kinda cool? Huh? Anyway, that bugged me because there are things that happen that some might find insta-esque but really falls under the fated/true mate deal. Okay. Rant over.

I truly enjoyed the book, grumble aside. Avery is ridiculously adorable in his wolf form and his reaction to seeing Warwick as a dragon the first time was more than I could have asked for. These two complement each other in the best ways and the twist on the mating rituals was fun and hell sexy. The mating itself got all sorts of hot and I have one line highlighted with the note, “Yes Daddy Dragon” because it was totally appropriate.

[…] as a child he’d often dreamed about a white knight in shining armor rescuing him from the drudgery of his life. No one needed to know that in those fantasies, he saw himself living in a castle like the proverbial prince in a fairy tale. Instead of a white knight riding to his rescue, he got the dragon willing to take him flying.

Dragon’s Hoard is a fun and fluffy romance that plays on the classic dragon and his hoard lore with a twist. This romance read like a sorta fairytale with the hopeless romantic Omega who is sheltered and basically locked away in the Pack House tower until his knight in scaly dragon form comes to his rescue. Avery needed to be rescued by Warwick from the life his detached parents had planned for him and in true Pretty Woman fashion, Avery rescues Warwick right back.

Review: In Enemy Hands by M.A. Church

Two very different civilizations—one bathed in bright sunlight, and the other veiled in shadow.

Bad decisions, declining resources, and a king on the brink of madness force Prince Varo Kutchif, third son of the royal family and a starship captain, to attempt the impossible: barter for Black Phospolrock, an energy source the mysterious Helkan kingdom has in abundance. Varo opens a line of communication with Adlar, an intriguing Helkan who seems to reciprocate Varo’s interest. He hopes so, because if negotiations collapse, Varo has orders to attack.

The Helkans preside over a planet shrouded in perpetual darkness. Several species have tried to exploit its natural resources through trade with them, but all have failed. Adlar Mondur is the older brother to the Helkan ruler. An assassin of the highest order, he’ll do anything to protect his king and his people—including tracking down the Yesri prince who crash-lands on their planet, leaving an ugly scar across its untouched beauty.

Thus begins a journey where two men from disparate civilizations grow from enemies to lovers.

I was really looking forward to this sc-fi romance. I love the cover and the blurb sounded promising. But it just... didn't quite hit the mark.

When Prince Varo crash landed on the Helkan planet, he was immediately taken captive by Adlar, an assassin for the king. They had spoken prior to the crash and (of course) had immediately felt an attraction to each other. So when Adlar captured Varo he thought that would just naturally progress into more? After he slaps a collar on his neck and tells Varo he can never leave? Apparently so.

I wish there was a little more resistance from Varo. I am all for a good slave/capture romance, but I felt like Varo's resistance was half-hearted, at best. If you're gonna fight it, then fight it! He was too unsure of himself and "damsel in distress" for me. I was almost embarrassed for him.

There were major differences between the characters and the planets they were both from. I found the stark differences so extreme they were almost comical. Dark/light, day/night, industrial/natural... it was too much. Couldn't there have been a little more creativity here? They had to (very literally) be exact opposites?

I almost liked the story, but it felt too simplistic. Like there was something missing. That little something extra to make the story special. The writing left something to be desired in both the characters and the plot.

Overall, In Enemy Hands did not work for me and I didn't jive with this author's of writing style. I know there are a lot of M.A. Church fans out there, so maybe it's just me.

I mean, there was some sexy alien sex happening. So there's that.

Can two very different men find the love they need to survive?

Remi Ginn’s an easygoing werecat with a love of snarky T-shirts who would be perfectly happy with a human mate. Is that what the goddess Bast gives him? Of course not. Instead she gifts him with Marshell, a Vetala: a snakelike nonshifter who drinks blood to survive. A man who’s just as toppy as Remi—and even more powerful than the West Falls Clowder’s Alpha and heir apparent.

While Remi decides whether he can handle the fates’ choice, hunters attack Marshell. In an explosion of passion, Remi and Marshell mate and Remi declares Marshell his. Now they have to figure out how to make their relationship work as they dance around each other.

The clowder is in turmoil, and Remi’s acceptance of Marshell rocks the very foundation of the insular group. The consequences will be far-reaching. And if that isn’t problem enough, the situation with the hunters is far from resolved… as the appearance of an Alpha werewolf proves.

How long have you been writing? What inspired you to start writing?

Actually, not very long. Hmmm, maybe a couple of years? I got my start back in 2010. I was surfing the net and was looking for free short stories to read. I ran across this site called Literotica and stumbled across the Gay Male section. I was hooked, lol.

Somehow I’d missed all this. And boy, did I scrounge around there, reading every single story! There were some very good ones, and some very, very bad ones, lol. After reading there for half a year, I decided to try my hand at writing a story.

Somehow I’d missed all this. And boy, did I scrounge around there, reading every single story! There were some very good ones, and some very, very bad ones, lol. After reading there for half a year, I decided to try my hand at writing a story.

What finally pushed me into pubbing was winning a winter-themed contest on Literotica several years ago. I’d been writing The Harvest series there. So I wrote a Christmas story having to do with the characters from Harvest and entered it. *laugh* It won first place. What’s significant about that was this was *not* a M/M contest. Most of the entries were M/F actually. That helped make my mind up.

How do you come up with the titles to your books?

It’s like approaching a good-looking person at a bar. You make eye contact—there’s a spark. You check each other for a little while then… you meet. Talk. Flirt. Cop a feel or two and see if that spark turns into a blazing fire, lol. A time or two I’ve had to walk away and find another title to eye.

I’ve been lucky. Titles have never been um, hard, for me to ah, come, up with. *laugh* Okay, I’ll stop now.

Describe your writing space.

Well, lol, it depends on where I end up. Some days the laptop and I are on the couch in the den. There are a *lot* of windows in there, and I can see the pond from the couch. It’s bright and sunny. Usually Kitty curls up on a pillow next to me while I write.

Other times I’m in the bedroom. The hubby works nights two weeks out of four. Normally, he falls asleep in the bedroom because it’s dark in there. But there are times the Outdoor Channel grabs him and he falls asleep on the couch. Those days I end up in the bedroom. I sit on the bed with Kitty curled up at the end of the bed, lol.

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it?

I’ve never truly struggled with writer’s block, except for one time. For a good six to eight months after the stroke I had in 2012, I struggled. So… I don’t know if you would really call that writers block. Regardless of whatever you’d call it I struggled getting my thoughts on the page.

I know now part of the problem had to do with the medications I was on. Once that was straightened out, things got better. Even though the stroke wasn’t as bad as it could have been, I still needed time to recuperate.

What comes first for you, the plot or characters?

For me, the plot comes first. I have to have some working idea of what I’m writing, lol. Before I ever put pen to paper, so to speak, I have a beginning, middle, and end. *laugh* I guess it’s the teacher in me. I can’t help it, lol. Now, that’s not to say there isn’t room for change. Hell, there’s even been a time or two I threw the plot out the window and started completely over. Talk about stressing me out, though, so that doesn’t happen often.

What advice would you give a new writer just starting out?

The first thing would be to research the publisher you’re looking at. Google them. Go look at their website. What kind of covers do they have? Do you like them? Go on places like ARe and check out the bestseller list. What publishers are there? Ask around. Talk to others. Listen to what’s being talked about on social media and blogs. I hate to say it, but if there’s smoke, there’s usually fire.

The other thing I’d say is don’t give up, and please, don’t take rejection to heart. This is a business. Publishers want to make money. If they don’t think something will work for them, they’ll give it a pass. That doesn’t mean they think the story sucks. So, okay then, it’s been rejected. Send that story off to another publisher.

Chapter One—Remi

Fuck my life.
I’d have to check, but I was pretty sure I had a shirt that said that somewhere in my closet. If I didn’t, it was next on the list of things to get. Because it fit—my life was fucked.
Sighing, I turned the radio up in an effort to drown out my thoughts. I rattled down the road in my old beat-up work truck—which was another thing I needed to take care of. I’d owned a sweet ’69 Ford Mustang. Had being the key word. It went up in flames not long ago… with the mate of Dolf, our heir apparent and head beta, inside.
Kirk made it out alive. My baby wasn’t so lucky, and I hadn’t replaced her yet. Yes, I was mourning a car. I loved her. Ugh. So much for drowning out my thoughts. I turned on my blinker and made the turn onto Alpha Armonty’s street for an emergency meeting he’d called.
Bad enough this was Monday, but it was what humans called Cyber Monday, goddess help us. I turned the heat up a little more. December had arrived with what the South considered abnormally cold temperatures. Frankly I liked the cold—liked the snow, as long as we weren’t buried under a mountain of the stuff.
As I pulled up in front of his house, I saw Dolf’s truck was already there. Dolf, our head beta, was the Alpha’s son and heir apparent. The other three betas—Heller, Aidric, and Brier—had arrived too. That left me. I was also a beta for the West Falls Clowder.
I parked behind Heller and sat in my truck, staring sightlessly at the house. One of the reasons we were meeting was because I met my mate, Marshell Foles, a few days ago. Good news, right? Cue the canned audience applause.
Now the bad news. My mate was possibly stronger than my Alpha and the heir apparent together. Okay, now cue the canned boos and hisses. Maybe I should’ve said life was fucked with a capital F.
I flashed back to the night I found out he was mine and the heavy petting session we had on his couch. Now my cock was hard. Wonderful. Just what I needed—an erection right before I met with my Alpha.
I pushed at the bulge, frowning. “Down, boy. I’m afraid you’re barking up the wrong tree.”
In order for a shifter to mate, we had to share come and blood during sex—which involved bottoming. For my mate I could bottom. The thing was, I didn’t see myself doing it on a regular basis. I was a top—which was not that big of a deal, except so was Marshell.
Somehow I didn’t see Marshell bottoming any more than I wanted to. The man screamed Alpha male. That was another can of worms, and not the only one by any means. And sitting here analyzing this was useless. I got out and walked toward the front door before one of them noticed me sitting out here in my truck like a dummy.
Just as I got to the door, Dolf opened it, read my shirt, and promptly burst out laughing. “You have got to tell me where you get those.”
Smirking, I shook my head. “It’s a well-guarded secret.”
Today I wore a black shirt with white writing: Be careful when you follow the masses…. Sometimes the M is silent. “Masses” was in light blue, as was the letter M, to draw attention to the play on words. I’d been known to follow an ass or two in my day. Those days were over now.
Dolf nodded at my truck. “I was wondering if I was going to have to come out there.”
“I had a feeling you’d be tapping on the driver’s window if I didn’t get out soon,” I said as Dolf moved out of the way so I could enter the Alpha’s home.
“I was counting down. Dad and the rest are already in his office.”
“That’s where the food is, right? I just got off work, so I haven’t eaten.”
Dolf clapped me on the shoulder as he shut the front door. “Of course. Come on back before they eat it all—damn bunch of vultures.”
I followed Dolf. The smells coming from Alpha Armonty’s office made my mouth water. “Something smells good.”
“Mom got hot wings. There are fries, coleslaw, and potato salad to go with it. And rolls too.”
“Your mom rocks.”
We entered the office. Everyone was still standing around helping themselves. Good. That meant there was still food, and I made a beeline for it.
“Hey! Look what the cat finally dragged in.” Aidric shoulder-bumped me.
“Oh, such sharp wit. It cuts like a dull knife.” I rolled my eyes. “And don’t think I didn’t notice you bumping me away from the table, you hog.”
“Hot wings, man.” Aidric winked at me. “Food of the gods and hungry werecat shifters.”
“You’re always hungry,” I griped, shoving Aidric out of my way. “Stop blocking the table, dude.”
“Hey, Remi,” Brier greeted me.
“Hey, how’s it going?”
“Good, good. Just got through helping my sister, Breanna, move into her new apartment here in town. I swear, how does one person accumulate that much stuff?” Brier complained.
“Oh that’s right. I forgot she was back,” I said. “Where was she living before?”
“Philadelphia. She moved up there for her job, but she couldn’t stand the cold weather and endless snow. All she did was gripe, gripe, gripe. I finally got tired of hearing it and told her if she was that unhappy, then she should move back home. I was kidding, but I don’t think she got that. Next thing I know I’m getting a phone call and a due date for her to move.” Brier scowled at a chip on his plate. “Should’ve kept my mouth shut.”
“What did you tell me she did?” I asked.
“She’s an accountant. Now that she’s settled into her new place, she’s started job hunting. She’s got some savings, but that won’t last forever.”
“Is she still unmated?” I asked.
“Yep. She had a boyfriend, but they weren’t mates. And speaking of mates, I heard you found yours. Man, sorry I couldn’t attend the dinner. Congrats.” Brier sat down at the round table we always used for meetings.
“Yeah, you should’ve seen his face.” Aidric chuckled.
“Thanks,” I said, unsure if I should say more. Did Brier know the situation? Aidric did. He was there that night.
“Welcome, Remi.” Alpha Armonty pointed at the side table where the drinks were set. “There’s several different sodas to pick from, and tea. Get yourself a plate and grab a seat.”
“Yes, Alpha.” I filled a plate and got a drink. After we were settled, Alpha Armonty cleared his throat. All talking ceased.
“We’re meeting for several reasons. First let me congratulate Remi. As I understand it, Remi met his mate during Heller’s Thanksgiving dinner, which I wish now the wife and I had attended.”
“Yeah, you never know what kind of trouble Heller’s going to stir up,” Aidric joked.
“Again, let me remind everyone Lawson’s to blame for the whole Thanksgiving deal. That’s my story, and I’m sticking with it.” Heller nodded as though that was the end of the subject.
“You chickenshit.” Aidric poked Heller in the ribs. “Look at you trying to throw it off on your mate, and the guy isn’t even here to defend himself.”
“I’ll tell him,” I volunteered, flashing Heller an evil grin. “Knowing Lawson, he’ll hide Heller’s hair-styling stuff as revenge. Hmm, I might even have to suggest that. Just in case, you know.”
“He’d need a storage unit for all of it,” Brier added and then took a drink of his soda.
“And a forklift to get it to the storage unit.” Dolf snickered, licking the sauce from the hot wings off his fingers.
“Just a damn minute here.” Heller threw his napkin at me. “How’d this discussion get off onto me anyhow? And Remi? You might want to remember Lawson’s like a brother to your mate. Maybe I’ll tell Lawson to tell Marshell how you picked on me… and I’ll have you in the doghouse, man.”
“Doghouse? Really?” Dolf hooted.
“Sounds better than cathouse.” Heller shrugged and then bit into a wing.
