Author: Jack L. Pyke

Novel: Psychopaths & Sinners, Don’t… book 5

Release Date: 22nd May, 2018

Blurb: “Because us? Psychopaths and sinners… we don’t need fixing, Gray.”
Three bodies, three mutilations, each one with something… unusual inserted into the wounds. The deaths are enough to leave Ash Thomas scrambling around to find someone to trust as the murders hit so close to home and heart.
For Gray Raoul, MI5 director of G-Branch, the deaths offer something else, a fall back into a familiar life where culling serial killers cater to his own darker mindset. But the farther Gray moves away from home, the more he realises serial killer games in the field are nothing compared to who he has locked up back at home. Sometimes walking the fine line between psychopaths and live-in lovers is a far darker game.
For Ash, that might just mean he’s on his own now, facing a killer who has a deadly fascination for pretty young men and dancing Holly Blue butterflies over their skin.

The Psychopaths & Sinners’ Blog Tour
Sleeping with Psychopaths: the cullers.

It isn’t hard to find a special post to help kickstart the Psychopaths & Sinners’ Blog Tour. Profiling the worst of psychopaths as they sometimes turn serial killer has been a fascination since the original psychopath “supposedly” emerged back in the Victorian era: Jack the Ripper. And as for those who sleep with them…? That will forever remain one of the darkest questions known to man.
History is pretty clear on Jack: officially he murdered five prostitutes, with motives still unknown to this day. The conspiracy theories behind those motives have had ripperologists debating through the years over why: was he a butcher, doctor, vet, midwife -- male, female? Did Jack harbour a deep hate for prostitutes, or was he a collector of body parts, out to cure infertility and make a name for himself in the backdrop of the emerging medical field? Perhaps the most notable conspiracy theory of all tests out whether Jack was tied to the Crown, clearing up the “mistakes” of the Royals.
But was there something else going on back then, something that went under the radar? Especially with how there were two serial killers loose on London streets. Why were two serial killers loose on London streets?
Before Jack the Ripper and the first murder of a prostitute in 1888, the 5th of September 1873 saw one side of a woman’s body found in Battersea Waterworks. Almost playing tag with Jack after that, more torsos were also found along the Thames, right up until 1889.
They were known as the Thames Torso Murders. All supposedly with the same surgical skill as Jack, all creating a climate of fear on London streets.
Social conditions of London slums were undergoing minor change by the government during that period. But then as the newspapers broke the news of Jack the Ripper, and journalists cries went up for serious social reform, the UK government accelerated that change, along with bringing in trade unions and focusing on worker rights. A decade after the first Jack the Ripper murder, London had undergone drastic change for the better.
And yet both the identity of the Thames Torso Murderer and Jack the Ripper remained unknown; they disappeared back into obscurity.
Or, perhaps, with calm and social order being restored on the back of chaos, they were simply called back into obscurity.
The power of the government, any government, has always brought up the question: just how far will they go to regain social stability? Would they kill their own? Set one dog free to slaughter another? Perhaps in this case, set two dogs free to feed and fuck about with chaos that forced social change? And the payment for the dogs? That couldn’t be simpler: remain the top of their food chain and be allowed a clear playing field to… cull. To do what they were born to do as natural born killers.
2018, present day. Meet Gray Raoul, MI5 Director of Counterterrorism. One of only three psychopaths who are called to heel by the Monarchy. One of only three of the Crown’s cullers, but top of the psychopath feeding chain. When MI5 rules and regulations fail, Gray’s called in for culls as high up as corrupt politicians, right down to regional instability and arms dealers.
But give him a serial killer… one of his own kind, he prolongs it. He loves it.
Give him a serial killer who loves inserting come-covered holly blue butterflies into his victim’s bodies, like the one making a home in Psychopaths & Sinners, and he’ll dance with the worst of society when it comes to dominance over another killer.
Gray’s life is never more black and white: you’re either cattle, or the bastards who hunt them. Stands to reason no lover would register in Gray’s world, and yet, Gray has two. Most would need sectioning for getting involved with Gray, and one has been: Jack Harrison. He’s a certified psychopath in his own right, or a part of him is, at least, and he digs deep into Gray’s culler world, calling the sadist out at every twist and turn in Gray’s already dark mindset. The ultimate sinner as a lover.
The surprise comes with Jan Richards, the third part to their triad.
Soft soul, soft heart, Jan’s… just an accountant, where his love of disaster movies sees him naturally fall into the same disaster when it comes to life and what happens between the sheets.
Both Jack and Jan offer such a yin and yang effect on Gray. Yet if asked to reason why they sleep with him, they couldn’t, not fully. Perhaps sleeping with a psychopath is superfluous compared to getting to know the man. How with any psychopath, it all starts so subtly on a psychological level, so that by the time body and fist catch up, they’re already in balls deep without even realising.
But there’s one glitch to all of that system.
Get two psychopaths together, they know how and when to play each other: they have been playing like that for years, but throw Jan’s… normalness in with them? Normal becomes the threat that destabilises. Normal changes all the rules, showing the murky water between black and white that neither psychopath has walked before.
With the cullers themselves, they’ve been around through some of the UK’s darkest moments, with Gray making his own mark right along with them. But there’s change now, and it’s forcing a new shift in Gray, one that’s never looking… darker when it comes to sleeping with psychopaths.

Jack brought fellow author Susan Mac Nicol along to chat about what today's visit is all about. Both authors are part of the Being Me Campaign and shared stories for the charity anthology, Being Me (more info below). It's a very important cause and there are different links below to see where you can help or check out!

Plus, Jack's hosting an awesome giveaway: US $5/ UK £5 Amazon gift card AND winner's choice from Jack L. Pyke's back list!

Being… You

First off, I just want to wish BMBR a happy 4th anniversary, and say a huge thanks for having us over today!! You guys do a wicked job!
So, what’s this post all about, then? Well, in all honesty, it’s mostly about… you.
It’s about the mother who’s walked into a job and seen a younger man get paid more, even though they do the same job. It’s about the man who kisses another man and is threatened with a beating over being given a chance to wear matching wedding rings. It’s about the bi kid in school who’s bullied for being overweight as well. About you, and how you’ve probably at sometime maybe missed that meal at dinner, then tea, then probably thought “I can’t” at breakfast too, all because of the sneers you got in the office over wearing a bigger size shirt.
We’ve all faced prejudice, discrimination, and bullying at some stage, but there’s one thing we have in common: the voice… an ability to tell our story.
And my story? I have a sixteen-year-old transgender son who is also autistic. I’m a parent who’s seen her kid come home bruised and in tears. I’ve sat through meetings discussing my son’s gender with strangers who have seen transgender as just a mental disorder tied into autism.
So when the call went out for the Being Me Charity Anthology that looked at giving our struggle a voice, all in the hope of raising money for other families who are still struggling to be heard, I fell in love with the idea.
Author Susan Mac Nicol is deeply involved with the being Me Campaign, and it was her idea to bring together a collection of stories for the Being Me Charity Anthology that looked at celebrating diversity in all its colour, hurt, and strife. So I’ve hijacked her for a while to explain why.

Thanks for being here, Susan. The absolute beauty with the Being Me Campaign is that it tackles multiple levels of diversity, across all age demographics, whether that’s bullying, discrimination or prejudice. Can you give us a little on the background of the charity itself? How did it all get started?
The Being Me Campaign was founded in October 2015 by Kieran Stanbridge and Tracy Shayler who felt that enough wasn’t being done to educate, empower and inspire young people and adults to be proud of their differences and who they are as individuals. Kieran was bullied at school for being gay and overweight, and as the mother of a gay couple, Tracy encountered a lot of homophobia plus discrimination for her own health issues.
This charity is about owning and celebrating any differences a person has, and unlike other charities, we are not restricted to a specific difference. There are enough charities out there tackling certain niches of discrimination, and this charity wanted to give a voice to anyone who felt different, whether it be for their sexuality, health, mental or physical appearance or for any other reason the person thought made them different. There may well be some we aren’t even aware of!
Many young people and adults are subject to bullying, discrimination or prejudice for simply being who they are, even if they conform to society’s perception of ‘normal’. This is unacceptable, and the charity wants to change this. Through the #IAmBeingMe workshops, social media channels and the website, everyone gets to voice and share their personal story to inspire others to be proud of who they are.

And how did you become Involved with Being Me?
This is a great story. Tracy started out being a fan of my books, and we connected such that one day we had lunch together in London. Then we had another lunch date. Before long, we kept in touch. We also connected via Divine as well, when we featured Luke and Trent. Tracy also runs a group on Facebook called Trent and Luke Misfits Unite, dedicated to bringing LGBT people together to make friends, talk and support each other. I’m a member of this group and attended a couple of the Misfit meetings as well. When I saw the Being Me Campaign was looking for trustees, I wanted to be part of it. It fitted so well with my own core beliefs about live and let live and my intense dislike of persecution and discrimination of any kind. I sent along my CV and my submission as to how I believed I could be an asset, and the rest was history.

Being Me is all about the voice, or giving diversity a voice and sharing individual stories to help anyone else who might be going through the same problems. What kind of other events do they arrange to help get these voices out there?
The Being Me Campaign loves stories, people stories. So they started out inviting anyone who wanted to contribute to share their story and come along to a YouTube filming day. You can see some of these stories on the website. The charity held a huge launch at the YouTube studios on November 15th 2016, which was a great success. You can read about it here https://www.divinemagazine.biz/being-me-campaign-launch-anniversary-event/ . We had a wonderful lunch event with eight wonderful UK authors and one lucky winner and his partner in London that was part of an initiative to raise funds. Our trustees get out and about doing sponsored events, like London walks and simply carrying a bucket and doing street-fund raising. Part of what we offer is diversity training for corporate companies, so delegates from the campaign visit places like Sony to pass on experience and some wise words to their own staff members. More events are planned for 2018, so watch the social networks for more news.

Can you tell us more about the charity anthology: Being Me. What diversity does it cover?
The anthology covers myriad diversities, from being a stranger from another planet, to people with a facial disfigurement, an amputee, young people facing who they are, people with disabilities, people with scars and people discriminated against for their ethnicity. So there is a mixed bag of everyday problems people face, and which are tackled in the anthology with compassion, humour and great storytelling.

And lastly, where can we find out more about the Being Me Campaign?
At the moment, the campaign is taking a little time off, gearing itself up for 2018. You can find out more about us on the website www.beingmecampaign.com, and on the social networks below.

Review: Broken Ink by Jack L. Pyke

Novel (112,000 words) Genre(s): Contemporary, Gay, BDSM

Carrying a tattoo on your skin no longer just comes with a risk of infection. Get the composition right, you have the latest mind-control drug on the market. It’s the sex-traders’ dream, or worst nightmare, depending on the concentrated dose of the ink—and just who’s wearing it.

For Kiyen, the ink means he’s able to strip raw the minds of the best and worst of society. He’s one of MI7’s top killers and never more driven to select and take down a target. For Falen, the ink has ensured he’s spent his early years as a willing sex slave and low-grade empath. Hiding out in a small town and trying to bury the needs running through his body, Fal’s hoping to stay under the radar of MI7 and their specialist killers. But the ink itself has a mind of its own, wanting to ignite the natural dynamics driving a Dom and sub, so when Kiyen is forced into Fal’s small world, prejudice battles a pure need to touch. Only problem is: Kiyen’s on the run, and in a world where thought can be the worst crime of all, Fal’s in for a fight for his sanity to find out just what it is that’s making a young killer run for his life. (M/M)

What. A. Ride.
There should be t-shirts printed up that say, 'I've been Pyked.' and on the back, 'And survived… Sort of.' I'd buy one.

My second Pyking was much the same as the first-entertaining, mind bending, kept me guessing and on the edge of my seat. Yeah, I needed a cocktail afterwards. What can I say? Pyke has a gift for mindfuckery. I formed and discarded so many theories I felt a little like my boy.

Only less composed.

Now, it's well documented and partially accepted that I'm not the biggest fan of crazy trains. Thankfully, the saving grace of Broken Ink was the relationship between Yen and Fal was secondary. Broken Ink is much more a psychological thriller than a romance. I'm not going to try to explain the ink or this world that Pyke has developed because it should be experienced individually and there's a glossary. Seriously, anything that has a glossary to explain the terms and… you're on your own, kids. Suffice to say, Pyke gave me something I could sink my teeth into with covert government agencies, amnesia, possibly hallucinatory characters and freakish powers.

TRIGGER WARNINGS:  CHILD ABUSE and RAPE
If these are triggers for you, you've been warned. I have a hard time with child abuse so I basically choked down the first three chapters (with a break), but they are vital to the plot. This alt-reality is complex with different levels of ink and powers associated with it coupled with deciphering what's truth from what's fabrication along with who knows and how much they know. Pyke weaves it all together skillfully with interesting characters.

Yen is a survivor, though not particularly likable. He's cagey, standoffish and lacks compassion. He's also quick to anger and has a tendency to be ruthless when crossed even if  the "betrayal" is simply his perception. I suspect he's a genius but it's never confirmed. Why he reacts the way he does is completely understandable given his history and age. For him to have done otherwise would've been inconsistent with his character, but deep down he just wants someone to be on his side, to believe him, to be on #TeamYen, if you will. Why he latches on to Fal is still a mystery to me and Fal's history isn't all that much better making the two of them together…

A couple of whackadoodles. Whackadoodles who like the word 'fuck' a little too much. Now, I'm a card carrying member of the 'Fuck is so Versatile' club, but there is such a thing as overkill. I was rolling with it as lending credence to their difficult childhoods/characterization up until the final scene where it entered ridiculous territory. There are over 500 instances of some form of the word in this book. My kindle maxed out on the fuck search. That's never happened before. Heavy handed? You decide. When it becomes a distraction during that important final scene and your readers start skimming I'd say that's not a desired outcome and I cuss like a sailor.

Why not 5 stars?

Aside from the couple things I've previously mentioned and shying away from spoilersville, I don't see the point of running; it doesn't make sense to me. There seemed to be consistenty issues with Yen's power/ink that never were explained other than them being anomalies which seemed like a cop out to me. There were sentences that I read three and four times that I couldn't make heads or tails out of not to mention SPaG errors and a couple of trivial continuity errors. But mostly it was the final scene. It dipped into melodramatic waters for me and seemed tidy, definite HFN territory here.

Lest I leave you with the wrong impression, Broken Ink really is one helluva mind-bending, sci-fi thriller with a little bit of kink (mostly D/s in the consensual/erotic realm, dips into other areas in the non-con realm). Now, if you happen to like psychological thrillers with a couple of crazy train MCs you are going to feel like a kid at Christmas. Enjoy!

Review: Antidote by Jack L. Pyke

Video footage of Jack Harrison sleeping with Cutter, a man who has mutilated teenagers, should have stayed dead and buried with the man who had filmed it. Yet when footage to Jack’s past starts appearing on Internet porn sites, Jack’s whole world is again turned on its head. At first the porn links are done to unsettle, to disrupt Jack’s fire and ice world: all the sexed-up adrenaline of being caught between the pleasure to Gray Raoul's BDSM kink, and the gentleness of Jan Richards’ vanilla touch. But when the content of the porn sites force even Gray to turn his back on Jack, leaving Jack isolated and away from the full protection of the Master’s Circle, Jack is left at the mercy of a group of men who are out to alter Jack’s whole perception on his BDSM lifestyle. As brutally as possible, Jack’s sex life is now live webcam feed for a whole new audience.

Words cannot describe what I've just read. I just read words, technically, yes, but… to put into words what this book has done to me is next to impossible.
There will be spoilers in this review.

I think about this book and I want to cry, or puke, or cry and puke at the same time. I can't unread this. Okay. Let's be honest here. I like to draw pictures of unicorns, and pet cakes, and everything I like fairly fluffy. This book is practically like sitting a nun down in a room and making her watch some snuff films.

This book, friends, is not for the faint of heart. People warned me. Fuck, Jack L. Pyke warned me, and I was all, "Yeah, bitchin', totally tubular, sounds radical." Little did I know this book may possibly require me some therapy sessions in my future.

Basically, this book is fucked up.

Jack is a fantastic character. God, writing this kind of makes me want to cry like a little baby. I grew really attached to Jack in Don't… He's such a little shit, you can't help but love him. But the things that have happened to him are written and explained so vividly, I feel so drained for him. I feel like I was there, in Jan's place, watching him. I don't know how he can ever recover from this. It's not like he wasn't fucked up in the first place, then throw in this long, drawn-out abduction in Antidote, and you've got yourself a real shit-storm.

I actually learned to love Gray in this book and surprisingly enough, Jan too. It's hard to say. In all menage books I read, I usually lean towards a character or two. Pyke has done such a superb thing for the genre, creating an actual relationship between three men that feels so attached. I can't pick one without the other. I love Jack and Gray together, but I feel like Gray needs someone softer sometimes, someone to balance out Jack's irrational nature. So now my coupling is with Gray and Jan, who, god, broke my heart at the love admission. But I can't leave Jack out. He needs to be somewhere, he means too much to me. So, all in all, I love these three men together.

“Somewhere along the line you fell in love with him, didn’t you?” he said quietly, barely glancing at Gray. Then back at me, he shouted, “What the fuck is wrong with you?”

Martin. Martin confused the fuck outta me in classic Pyke fashion. Love it. I loved Martin being in the story. Oh, he's so sassy and such a little shit. My heart raced reading about him the first time with Gray. I'd secretly love to see a scene with Gray and Martin. I understand why Gray won't, but that doesn't mean a girl can't dream.

The beginning of the book was fantastic. Cute, fun, sweet, watching all of these boys having a gay old time, goofing around and living their fun lives of bickering.
The middle. Well, I had to pause on this book at least four times. It was so hard for me. I get it though. I read the warnings, I looked at the genres, I should've known what I was getting myself into. But not like this. The descriptive nature of Pyke's writing is kind of like a jackhammer (haw haw); it's completely relentless and it draws you in, even if the subject matter is horrifying. And trust me, it's horrifying.

In the end, I didn't think Gray would be the one to opt out, but a huge part of me is glad he did. He was becoming too much like Jack's dad (not Jack's actual dad, but as place-filler), and less like his lover.

This book.. is… so much. It's so much of everything to the point where I was wondering if it was too much. But the thing is, I get it. I get why there was that much intensity and brutality and pain. The story needed it, it's just hard for me to read.
There were parts of the story which literally left me pausing, almost gasping for breath because I forgot to breathe. I wanted to cry or kick something, or mostly just run away. Run away from a book? Sounds ridiculous, right? But try reading this and tell me it doesn't make sense.

Pyke has tortured my beloved boys so much in this book. Her writing is wonderful. I adore it. I admittedly am not even the hugest BDSM fan on the planet, but when Pyke writes it, it feels like it's right up my alley. She's so clever and tricky, making little babies like me read and love books like this one. Her writing is fantastic and if nothing else in this book, her intensity she brings to each of her characters should be noted.

I suppose if I had to think of something, the book felt a little long. Some of the talking, I feel, could've been cut and we could've lost a few pages in the process. But other than the fierce desire to now somehow Men In Black Flashy Pen Thingy the middle part of the book from my brain, I'm very glad I read it and will absolutely be looking for the third instalment when it comes out.
