Review: His Fairy Prince (Tit for Tat #2) by J.S. Harker

A trick of fairy magic becomes a romantic treat.

Halloween is fantasy-loving college senior Greg’s favorite holiday, and he’s thrilled to explore a spooky puzzle—even if his friends prefer slashers over witchcraft. Luckily the gorgeous and otherworldly Alaric wants to sneak time alone with him. Unluckily Greg’s sworn off hookups. Still reeling from an intoxicating kiss, Greg opens a secret door…

…and steps through a portal to the enchanted realm Alaric is destined to rule.

Stranded with the alluring Greg, Alaric sets off across his kingdom with the man who might be the consort he’s always wanted. It won’t be easy—Alaric’s ex, the Lord of Spiders, wants to reunite with Alaric—but if Greg and Alaric succeed, they’ll find what they’ve always wanted: a place to belong.

Featuring a light Halloween theme, this was classic Beyond fare.

Just like the blurb says, Greg and his friends are doing an escape room, a business that Alaric owns. The immediate attraction is palpable, but there’s a bit of a roadblock. Greg is on a self imposed romance sabbatical, needing to concentrate on college and not get distracted by random hookups and the ensuing drama when someone else inevitably catches his eye. Apparently, Greg has a problem with keeping it in his pants, and though his “little Greg” wants Alaric, he tries to spare both of them the potential heartache that is sure to ensue.

What Greg doesn’t know of course, is that Alaric is an actual fairy prince who’s biding his time in the human world until his mother retires her throne. Alaric’s had his eye out for a potential human paramour because one would be so much better as a consort than his fellow manipulative scheming peeps. Greg’s hesitance is only fuel to the fire, and Alaric’s certainly up for the task.

Naturally, circumstance and maybe a bit of fairy magic allow Greg to stumble into the fairy kingdom, a situation that he can’t seem to get out of and thus, requires Alaric’s help to get back home. Thing is, Greg’s readily enamored of his new reality, not to say the least that Alaric is all the more appealing now that he knows the truth. Can these two come to trust their feelings and each other before crazy complex fairy rules tear them apart?

Again, this is tried and true for this DSP Beyond line. For those who need to know, this sequel can be read as a standalone as the only thing bridging books 1 and 2 is that they each have a fairy MC.

What I enjoyed was when Greg and Alaric were facing their many challenges and adventures in the fairy kingdom. What failed for me a bit was just the overall set up and progression, Greg’s personal history, and my expectations in wanting something a bit more complex. However, that’s on me and not the book.

Regardless, this continues with the strong NA vibe, has a scheming ex-boyfriend, a fish out of water trope, and a nice dollop of smexy, all topped off with the guy getting his prince and winning that coveted happily ever after. Enjoy!

Excerpt:

An escape room inside a secret passage. Someone in the control room could be waiting to see if Greg was willing to make a fool of himself and repeat a bunch of random sounds. There was no reason not to try. If it didn’t work, then Greg could rejoin his friends and rant with them about how awful the whole night was. If it did work, he might have even more to talk about with Alaric.

Greg ran his finger along the words as he sounded them out carefully. “Droll ter-a-chik saaliss sserra-phnull.

Then he tried the door. It was still locked, but the handle wiggled a little.

Greg bit the corner of his lip and checked over his shoulder. No one to judge him except whomever had control over the door, and he really wanted to see the Dullahan room. He could picture the corn field and full moon in the photo. He repeated the phrase quicker the second time.

Drollter-a-chiksaaliss sserra-phnull.”

A moonlight-silver glow lit the door’s outline. A definitive click resounded loud enough that Greg felt it pop inside him. The door handle moved under his hand, and the door swung out without needing a push. He stepped through, but the orange lights stayed behind.

Fields of dried cornstalks formed the border of a wide dirt path. They rustled as if a wind blew through them, which was an incredible effect considering Greg couldn’t hear a fan. The same wind brushed around him, ruffling his hair, and it was chilly. Alaric and his team must have rigged up some kind of draft through the basement.

On the far wall—which looked like it was miles away—the full moon sat in the night sky. Thin smoky clouds drifted across. It had to be a trick of lighting and painting, but between the moon and the wind, Greg was convinced he was outside.

Only Halloween Escapes was surrounded by blacktop and buildings. The nearest field was outside of town, and the strip mall housing the business was close to dead center. Dragging in this much dirt seemed excessive. The room didn’t make sense.

The door slammed shut. Greg jumped and spun toward it.

There was no door.

Panic tightened Greg’s throat and threatened to a full takeover, but—hold on. The trick was an obvious one. Greg slapped his forehead. The door was painted to blend in with the wall so guests wouldn’t see it and take the easy way out. The staff needed some way to get back and forth. All he had to do was find the right place or switch, and it would pop open.

He put out his hand to touch the wall and feel for the crease.

Nothing. His hand moved through the space as if it was air because... it was air. He took a step forward, and another, but still nothing.

“What the hell?” he said. His voice sounded oddly quiet, like someone had turned the volume way down.

He must have turned around. Determined to find the wall, he went over the last few steps with his hands out. Counting his steps, he went six paces. Still nothing. He walked back the other way, making sure he went nine steps.

No door. No wall, even. He knew he’d kept his feet on the path, but he held one hand out into the cornstalks anyway. His fingers found nothing solid except cornstalks. Very real, very dry cornstalks. His heart thudded in his ears.

Wait, that sound was external, not internal. It wasn’t his heart but hoofbeats. Greg stopped and turned toward the sound. Out among the shadows of the cornstalks, farther down the path, a rider on an ebony horse rode at a decent trot. He had a sword in one hand and a prop head in the other.

“Oh, thank fuck,” Greg muttered. He raised his voice and waved at the man. “Hey! Could you let me out?”

The horseman pushed his mount into a canter and rolled his wrist to flash his sword.

Of course getting out of the room wouldn’t be as simple as walking in. The room was named after the folklore monster. The guy playing the part was dedicated to his job, and he wasn’t going to stop and open the door for someone he thought was a guest. That would defeat the whole purpose of an escape room.

Greg could play along. He cleared his throat and called out, “Good sir, I’m not supposed to be here. If you could give me the solution to this maze, I’d be grateful.”

The horseman let out a wild cackle, and his horse took off at a gallop. He showed no signs of slowing down. If Greg stayed on the path, he’d get run down. He wanted to call the rider’s bluff and make him back down, but the horse was charging, the guy was swinging his sword, and the cackling made Greg’s hair stand on end. At the last second, he dove for the field, landing flat on his stomach and well out of the rider’s way.

The horseman went on another twenty feet, slowed his horse, and turned around.

Blog Tour: Tit for Tat by J.S. Harker

J.S. Harker is here today with an exclusive excerpt from her new Dreamspun Beyond novel, Tit For Tat! Find out more about this paranormal romance below.

Welcome to the final blog tour stop for Tit For Tat, my new holiday paranormal release. Thanks to Boy Meets Boy reviews for hosting. I’m JS Harker and proud to share my second novel with Dreamspun Beyond just in time to get people through the holidays. My house gets crowded and loud, and I’d much rather be reading than socializing sometimes. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels that way, right? Tit For Tat is a fun, sweet comedy that’s perfect for keeping up spirits during the long dark winter nights. Winter gets a bad rep, and I get that people miss the sun. But come on, snow? Snow is awesome.

It’s that love of winter that helped inspire Flynn, the Winter fairy at the heart of Tit For Tat. His magic is tied to his home realm, and being in our world is rough for him, especially if he’s not somewhere cold in climate. He’s curious though, and he adores exploring our world, even if he doesn’t always understand why we are the way we are.

Derek is a shy guy who needs a little push to explore. He manages to take the very bold step of talking to Flynn, who he has a huge crush on. Little does he know that Flynn’s not human. Sure, he’s strange, but Derek eventually learns how strange. Their dynamic, a push and pull between confidence and insecurity is something I think a lot of people will empathize with.

Plus, there’s lot of kissing and sugary treats.

Flynn and Derek have also inspired more novels set in the same universe with seasonal themes. Each novel’s a complete stand alone. I’m working on a summer story with Jared, a tech CTO who spends way too much time at work, and Brady, a Summer fairy who’d rather ignore that nasty word called responsibility. Also in the lineup is a Halloween-themed story. A fairy prince and a human boy fall in love while trying to navigate their way through a Tim Burton-esque kingdom.

I hope you enjoy this exclusive excerpt and have a Happy New Year.

Excerpt:

Buying the coffee was the easy part, and Derek nabbed a couple of extra sugar packets on his way out of the shop. He made his way to the fence near Santa’s Workshop.

Flynn worked the photography side. His green tights were extra flattering on his long legs. Derek sipped his coffee while he waited. After an endless procession of minutes, Gregory relieved Flynn, and Flynn came over to the fence, still in his elf costume. His form fitting, amazing elf costume.

“Hi,” Derek said. “What’s it take to get on Santa’s Naughty List?”

Oh crap. He said that out loud.

“More than naughty thoughts,” Flynn said. He leaned against the fence beside Derek.

He was close enough to kiss. But they were in public with a half-dozen kids and their parents nearby. Derek wanted to be bold, but he froze. Public displays of affection. Doing something to show he liked Flynn in public. Where people could see and judge. His brain automatically went into a different, nonsexy mode, as if he’d forgotten how to flirt entirely. He held up Flynn’s coffee.

“I hope it’s okay. It sounds like there’s a lot of stuff you haven’t tried, and it’s that time of year, and I drank half of mine already, so I can’t stop running my mouth,” Derek said. He felt like an idiot, and yet his mouth kept going without him. “Please take it. Oh, and here, I got some more sugar packets because you really seem to like sugar, so. Yeah.”

Flynn smiled and took the coffee and sugar packets from him. He gave Derek a quick kiss on the cheek. His lips were cool, and he smelled like cinnamon. “The rewards for being on the Nice List are even better than working your way onto the Naughty.”

Derek was pretty sure he could melt chocolate from the heat in his cheeks. “Oh. I, uh, I’ll remember that.”

Flynn took a tentative sip of the coffee. His ears straightened—or at least Derek swore they did—and his eyes lit up. He moaned as he took another drink.

The simple sound and Flynn’s overall joy went straight to Derek’s dick. He shifted his weight some, praying his jacket was long enough to cover the growing bulge in his jeans. At least going outside in the cold might help him tame his erection. One of the worst possible ways, but he’d have a chance to act normal before his horny side decided it wouldn’t be controlled.

“I’m glad you like it,” Derek said. “Are we still on for this afternoon?”

“Yes. Let me get changed, and I’ll be ready to go.” Flynn handed him the coffee cup. “I am coming back for that. And you.”

Flynn kissed his cheek again before making his way to Santa’s Workshop.

So Flynn liked peppermint mocha, and he was affectionate. Derek knew he had a huge goofy grin, but he couldn’t get rid of it. No one had ever been so easy to be with. Derek was only sorry he hadn’t tried asking Flynn his name sooner. There was a whole extra week he could’ve been dating Flynn if he had. Well, assuming one date could go well, though so far it was going pretty well.

Yeah. Yeah, the little kisses had to mean it was going well.

Blurb:

Cold has never been so hot.

College sophomore Derek is busy working over his holiday break—but his shifts at the toy store are no hardship if they mean more opportunity to dream about the sexy new guy working as an elf in Santa’s Workshop. When his mother gifts him a bag of cookies, Derek regifts them to Flynn as an excuse to get to know him. Flynn has presents to offer as well, and soon they’re dating, with Derek finding out his comfort zone is bigger than he imagined.

But Flynn is hiding a secret—he’s really a winter fairy whose magic is bound to the season. He can’t stay in the mortal realm, and Derek doesn’t want to lose contact with his family. Can they find a way to hold on to each other when the snow and sugar plums melt away?

A wintery DSP Beyond story that was fluffy and cute!

Insecure, forever nice guy Derek, doesn't really have a confident bone in his body. Derek’s trying to move on from a bad break up and so terribly wants to approach the hot elf working across the mall at Santa’s Corner, but he knows he just doesn’t have the charm nor the looks to catch such a catch! However, Flynn isn’t your average guy. He’s actually a fairy secretly visiting the fascinating dangerous human world, and he sees something special in the shy Derek.

This was whimsical and sweet as these two get to know each other. Flynn is definitely a fish out of water, completely naive about humans but equally enchanted and wary. He’s literal to a fault which makes him quite an endearing character as he wins the heart of Derek and falls in love at the same time. Thing is, it’s not so easy for fairies to remain on this side of the veil indefinitely, and Flynn just might lose his magic should he choose to stay.

This definitely had strong NA vibes, featured a virgin, and contained some good dashes of newbie smexy thrown in. Overall, easy enjoyable reading as it wrought out a seemingly impossible to achieve happy ending which of course, made me happy in turn!

Blog Tour: Soul Bond by J.S. Harker

J.S. Harker is making her clubhouse debut in support of Soul Bond, her first published novel! Find out more about this paranormal romance, read our 4.5 ❤️ review here and read an excerpt below!

Hey there! I’m JS and my stop here at BMB Reviews is the end of my first blog tour. Writing Soul Bond was a lot of fun and now you can pick up a copy! I’m so happy I get to share Ben and Noah’s story with you.

Though this is my first published novel, I’ve been writing for a long while. At some point, my heroes just started announcing themselves and insisting on being written. For Soul Bond, Noah pretty much showed up with a giant sign saying, “I’m going to steal the thing.” (Which when you flipped it over, it said, “Give me all attention now.”) He’s flippant and a liar and he believes he can get away with anything. Ben stepped in as a reflection in so many ways. He’s a believer and he’s determined.

From the moment they meet, Ben and Noah have problems keeping their hands off each other—something I swear they were doing all on their own. The following excerpt is part of their second meeting.

Excerpt:

Undeterred by the falling painting, Ben caught Noah around the waist and hauled him off the floor and into the opposite wall. Their touch sent a warm pulse through Noah. He ignored it and shoved at Ben, but Ben was stronger and larger. Switching tactics, he tried to squirm away.
Ben tightened his hold and pulled Noah through a door. He shut it and pushed Noah up against it, releasing his hold in favor of pinning Noah down. Those muscles were definitely real.
This wasn’t how Noah pictured getting into this position. He pushed, got nowhere, and glared up at Ben. “What the hell are you—”
Ben clamped a hand over his mouth. “Shut. Up.”
Voices echoed. Probably security checking on all the noise they’d made. Ben knew what Noah had done, and yet he wasn’t planning on turning him in. Elias Coldwell had a reputation for punishing intruders. Apparently that was true of the next generation. With all this extra power running through him, Noah had a chance at blasting his way past security and making a clean break. He bit Ben’s finger.
“Fuck!” Ben pulled back and checked his hand for signs of blood.
Noah used the door as leverage and pushed at Ben, gaining precious space between them. He made a grab for the door handle, only Ben caught his wrist and yanked him back. This room had a window. Noah rushed for it. Ben grabbed his jacket sleeve, so Noah twisted free of the garment, pulling the dagger from its hiding spot. The hilt was a cold leash in his hand, and he nearly dropped it.
He could use the dagger on Ben.
No. He was a thief, not a murderer. He shoved the dagger into the back of his waistband and spun toward the window.
With a growl, Ben threw the jacket down and came at Noah, shoving him onto the bed. They struggled, and Ben swept aside each attempt to hit or scratch. He straddled Noah. Losing, and badly, Noah shoved his hand over Ben’s eyes and barked out the command word for his light spell. Bright white light flooded out from his palm.
Ben knocked Noah’s hand aside and pinned his wrists to the bed. The damn spell hadn’t fazed him. Noah bucked, only worsening their position. Twisting back and forth caused Ben to sit on his legs.
Soothing tendrils caressed Noah’s arms, and his muscles relaxed on their own. He sagged into the bed and panted, the magic messing with him again. This position would be great in other circumstances. The mixed signals continued to blare as Ben pressed his hands down and rocked forward. Noah arched up, which he used as an opportunity to pull the dagger free.
Ben hefted it in his hand, bringing it into view. “The Dagger of Nemesis. Not a bad choice. Who’re you planning to kill?”

Blurb:
Stealing his heart.

As a thief and a warlock, Noah survives by using his wit and charm to prey on the privileged. His dangerous criminal boss wants an enchanted dagger belonging to a family of wealthy mages, including their pampered—but handsome—son, Ben. Failing to complete the job will be hazardous to Noah’s survival.

Noah bumps into Ben at a lavish party, and as soon as they meet, the connection’s undeniable, and it goes much further than ordinary attraction. Their bond reaches into their souls, entwining and changing their magic.

Which Noah thinks he can use to get to the dagger. After all, he isn’t sure this soul bond Ben seems so obsessed with is even real.

He also doesn’t count on being caught red-handed…. Or falling in love.

Another winner in the Dreamspun Beyond series and this one really balanced out the paranormal with the fluff so darn well. I was hooked on Noah and Ben immediately and was ready to learn all about Mages, Warlocks and the mythical/unattainable soul bond.
It isn’t possible. It is a story.
Being a hopeless romantic I am head over heels for the possibility that fate has one person out there for you and that usually, it’s the least person you’d expect. Maybe it’s because my husband and I on paper don’t make sense at all and yet we’re going on two decades together or maybe it’s just me being in love with love and watching fools fall… you know? Either way, the idea of fated mates or magical beings that can bond to one another that creates a romance far beyond the normal really turns my crank.

Being told with dual POV’s we get Noah first as he goes from a waiter at a high class Mage party into a bathroom to use magic to change his appearance. The description of the act was perfect down to the smell that happens when magic is used and we begin to know what Noah who is not a mage is doing at this party. It appears he has a job to do and that job is to steal a dagger. We aren’t told right away if being a thief if Noah’s normal MO but we are introduced to one hell of sexy man that turns Noah on at first looks and stirs his magic more than anyone ever has.

Oh but I adored Ben! Sure he is the son of a powerful Magus, but Ben is truly his own man. He is a fellow hopeless romantic and believes in the soul bond and has been searching for the man who would be his everything. When he spots Noah at the party and they touch, the spark is undeniable and even the knowledge that Noah is about to steal from his family doesn’t stop Ben in pursuit of what most believe will never be found.
“A soul bond is a rare occurrence. Some seek it their whole lives. Some believe they achieve it, only to discover someone else.”
“But it’s just a story.”
“Didn’t use to be. Once upon a time, everyone could find their mate if they tried.”
I am not going to ramble per my usual about this, but trust me I could. I loved every bit of this book to the masquerade element of Noah changing his appearance at the party to the Cinderella aspect of leaving his coat behind and Ben coming after him. I loved the opposites attract trope with not only Ben being a mage and Noah being a warlock, but the men being from opposite sides of the magic society and still choosing their bond and love above everything. This was super romantic full of suspense regarding the dagger Noah was to steal and what it will cost him if he doesn’t complete the job. It was amazing with these two as they learn what their magic can do when they are together and how to control it. It was beautiful to witness the intense and intimate moments between them and how I hope in my heart they begin to change the way their worlds react to each other and one day blend together to be stronger.

I simply loved this story of Ben and Noah and wish them nothing more than a bond that even the stills can’t break and many more breathtaking moments of love.
