Review: Stop Dragon My Heart Around (Magic Emporium) by Rachel Langella

(You may know them better as Ari McKay).

Sometimes Fate has a bizarre sense of humor.

Or at least it seems that way to Gus, owner of the Rainbow Room, Asheville’s main hangout for gay paranormals. He’s seen Fate catch up with the patrons of his bar while he served drinks and listened to their stories for three hundred years. He found all of it amusing, until his fated mate walks in and suddenly the twists aren’t so funny any longer!

Bear Hickes is a mage who specializes in fire, but life has lost its spark since his twin brother got married and left him alone. His older brother, Whimsy, is determined to help Bear find happiness no matter how much Bear objects, but meeting Gus gives Bear a wonderful idea: if Gus will pretend to be his boyfriend, Whimsy will get off his case. And somewhere along the line, Bear finds he wants it to be for real.

But there are secrets Gus is keeping from not just Bear, but the whole world. And when those secrets catch up with him at last, the danger won’t be just for Gus alone.

This story is set in the Asheville Arcana universe, but can be read as a standalone.

Stop Dragon My Heart Around is part of the multi-author Magic Emporium Series. Each book stands alone, but each one features an appearance by Marden’s Magic Emporium, a shop that can appear anywhere, but only once and only when someone’s in dire need. This book contains explicit scenes and a guaranteed HEA.

As per the blurb and the title, Gus is a dragon, a legendary being thought to be extinct, who has been quietly, unobtrusively living his life as the owner of the Rainbow Room, serving good food and drink to paranormal patrons for the last few centuries. Gus doesn’t dwell on his loneliness and is content to just be until one day, a mage named Bear walks into his bar, and Gus immediately realizes that Bear’s his mate.

Ensue classic denial of said mate, which evolves into a fake boyfriend scenario, as Bear convinces Gus to pretend date him to get his brother Whimsy, off his back. Of course, these two connect oh so right because fate deemed it so, and their love progression is authentic as their “dating” evolves naturally to more as growing feelings inevitably follow. Throw in a sinister evil preying on the supernatural citizens of Asheville, draining them of their life force, and it soon becomes apparent that Bear will be used against Gus in all the worst ways possible. Good thing that Gus has a seemingly useless item from the mysterious Magic Emporium to ultimately save the day!!

In all honesty, I picked this to read because it’s connected to the series written by this author’s other pseudonym Ari McKay. I have a hard time saying no to sequels or spinoffs, and I looked forward to revisiting the characters from Asheville Arcanum. Overall, I wasn’t disappointed regarding that aspect, though I do think people who haven’t read that series might be a bit overwhelmed by the other 3 couples that feature heavily here. Regardless, I enjoyed seeing all of them living happily and still fighting the good fight.

However, I was rubbed wrong several times by one of the MC’s opinions as it’s tossed around as a flippant side comment. I’m no stranger to reading about protagonists faced with hate and bigotry, but when said protagonist actually spews it himself with little background explanation other than he’s obviously Native American based on the cover (and in no way am I saying that there isn’t awful tragic history regarding European conquerors), it seemed incongruent and unnecessary. This again is just my unimportant opinion, but I’m assuming when your audience is most likely in the majority of the group you’re casually disparaging, then that’s just awkward. I was simply thrown off kilter and I’m not even “white”, but when our real world is in such crazy racial turmoil, any blanket statements about any race seems in poor taste. Simply put, this left me feeling all the wrong things despite this being a good addition to the Magic Emporium series.

No matter where in the world they have to go, the men of Hercules Security are ready to kick ass, take names, and, above all, save lives. Putting themselves in harm’s way is second nature to these men, and they’ll do whatever it takes to protect the innocent. Unfortunately the cost of such bravery is often brutally high, and sometimes the price a hero must pay isn’t always obvious…

Hunter Callahan loved his job as an explosives expert, but when a seven-year-old boy walks into camp wearing a suicide vest, the explosion that rocks Hunter’s world leaves him with wounds too deep to see with the untrained eye. Payne “Pita” Gibson is the only one who stands a chance of saving Hunter from self destruction, but doing so means Payne must share private facets of his own life. Could his unusual form of therapy not only help Hunter, but also win his heart? Pushing Hunter’s limits so hard is a test of Payne’s own strength of will -- but everyone knows that it’s No Pain, No Gain.

When Joe Morrissey returns home from a traumatic mission, he never expects to discover that his longtime partner and lover, Brian Finnegan, has fallen in love with someone else. Even though he wants Finn to be happy, Joe finds it difficult to share his lover with Drew Martin. But when fallout from Joe’s recent mission puts Finn in danger, Joe must work with Drew to save Finn’s life. With everything he holds dear at risk, Joe is pushed to the breaking point -- and Drew must step in to help put him back together. As Drew develops feelings for Joe as well, can Joe open his heart to the possibility of there being Room For One More?

Review: Quenched in Blood (Asheville Arcana #3) by Ari McKay

Will love mean rebirth… or death?

Vampire Julian Schaden has been warning the Asheville Paranormal Council of an impending demonic incursion for more than two decades. Over the past two years, he and his friends have fought as hard as they can with little help, since Micah Carter, the demon hunter who should have led them, shirked his responsibility and then perished.

Desperate for anything that might aid the fight, Julian enters the Carter property and finds something he never dared hope for: young Thomas Carter, the heir to a long line of demon hunters.

Thomas knows nothing about the supernatural world. But the prospect of a real life, outside the sheltered, isolated farm where he grew up, calls to him, and the idea of fighting the Unholy feels right.

Julian agrees to train Thomas even as he struggles against an unexpected, unwanted attraction. Thomas is too young and innocent to get involved with Julian, but opposites attract, and this is one battle Julian seems fated to lose. A prophecy from a dying mage comes with a bleak warning: the upcoming battle will claim Thomas’s life. To keep his home and friends safe, Julian may have to sacrifice the only love he’s ever known.

I just want to say that I enjoyed this entire trilogy as it brought some nice twists to a community of supernaturals confronted with some very terrible evil and how they deal with such conflict while still finding love in the process!

This 3rd and final book focuses on vamp Julian, who’s made it his life mission to hunt demons. When he finds out that the local demon hunter (who was killed in the last book) has been secreting away a grandson who knows nothing of his heritage, Julian’s at once appalled but also relieved to have found such a potential powerful ally to help in the current fight against a seriously scary foe.

In turn, Thomas takes things in stride. He’s surprised about how life has been flipped upside down but what a wonderful discovery to realize he has a greater destiny and responsibility than just being a humble farmer. As Thomas learns his trade and gains more experience through Julian’s training, he obviously falls in love while shit gets real as the enemy closes in.

This had a sweet romance, and fans of virgins will certainly enjoy this. Of note, I personally felt this fell just a bit short through really no fault from Julian and Thomas. Their progression was plausible and reasonable but perhaps the lack of a mate bond set them apart from the other two couples in this series, and such a prolonged buildup in defeating the ultimate baddie was a tad anticlimactic regarding the conclusion.

However, be reassured that this was plenty sexy, with a good dash of gory violence, and neatly tied up the main story arc. Seeing as how Whimsy and Harlan from Forged in Fire were my favorites, Julian and Thomas also unfortunately had a tough act to follow, and it was an upward climb from the start.

Regardless, this was an overall enjoyable paranormal series that consistently delivered on all fronts!

Blog Tour: Seeking Solace (The Walker Boys #3) by Ari McKay

Ari McKay are here today to talk about their new Dreamspun Desires release, Seeking Solace and they've brought an exclusive excerpt too!

Read our 5 ❤ review of it here.

Hello, everyone! I’m the McKay half of Ari McKay, and I’d like to thank Boy Meets Boy for letting me stop by as part of our launch tour for Seeking Solace.

Seeking Solace is the third book in our Walker Boys series, which focuses on some of the men of the expansive Walker family from Buffalo Lick, Texas. Each Walker Boys book features a self-contained romance with a different couple, but characters from the previous books often make appearances.

Although the Walker boys are from Texas, only the first book is set entirely in Buffalo Lick. The main action of Seeking Solace occurs on board a cruise ship. For this post, I’d like to present an exclusive excerpt from the book. Enjoy!

Paul followed Devin out of the dining room, and then they rode the elevator up to the sports deck, which was at the top of the ship. Since it was well after midnight, there was no one around, but Devin didn’t stop there. He took a key ring out of his pocket to unlock a door next to the stand where people could borrow basketballs or putters and balls for the minigolf course. There was a spiral stairway inside, and Devin led him upward to a small deck, no more than twenty feet square, that was completely deserted. But the view of the sky and the moonlit sea was beautiful, and the band in the dining room was clearly audible.
“When they built the ship, they’d planned to have skeet shooting up here,” Devin explained. He took off his backpack and placed it near the door. “But there was something about insurance and liability problems, so the idea was abandoned. One of the ventilation shafts for the dining room comes out on the sports deck, which is why you can hear the music.” He walked over to the railing where the deck overlooked the water at the aft of the ship. “I love to come up here at night.”
Paul approached the railing and gazed out at the ocean. The water looked forbidding—black and infinite—but the reflection of the moon on the surface gave it an unearthly allure. Overhead, countless stars glittered, bright pinpoints of light in the inky velvet of the night sky, and Paul was entranced by the view.
“I can see why,” he said, leaning on his forearms against the sturdy metal rail.
“They sometimes have small, private cocktail parties up here, which is why I have a key,” Devin said. He turned his back to the water, leaned against the rail, and looked at Paul. “So, Mr. Bailey… we’re all alone, no one can see… would you care to dance?”
Paul shot a startled look at Devin, too surprised to respond right away. That was the last thing he expected Devin to suggest, and he knew he ought to say no. He was already having inappropriate thoughts about Devin; dancing would only make it worse.
But he wanted to. He hadn’t danced in over two years, and he missed it. He missed the pleasure of having a man who was attractive and who he was attracted to in his arms, and Devin was safe. Trustworthy in ways Jack and the other men he’d dated after the accident hadn’t been.
Paul drew in a deep breath, roused his courage, and said, “Yes.”
He could see Devin’s smile in the moonlight as Devin straightened. “Would you prefer to lead? That way we can go at your pace.”
“Sure, that would be fine.” Paul moved closer and held out his arms, scarcely able to believe he was about to do this.
Devin moved closer, sliding into Paul’s arms as naturally as if he’d been doing it for years. They were well matched, and Devin smiled as the band began “Moonlight Serenade.”
“Well, this is about as perfect as it gets,” he murmured.
“So it is.” Paul kept a polite distance between them as he secured his arm around Devin’s waist and began to move. It was awkward at first, and he worried he was going to drag his prosthetic foot—or worse, trip them both—but the music was slow and easy to follow, which helped.
Devin moved with him, easily and naturally. He gave Paul’s hand a squeeze. “You’re doing great. See? You can still dance beautifully.”
“I haven’t fallen on my face,” Paul said, smiling wryly. “I consider that a win.”
“You’re doing much better than that,” Devin said. “You’re naturally graceful, and it shows. Just move as you always have, and you’ll be fine. Your body hasn’t forgotten.”
Devin’s reassurance was comforting, and Paul released a long, slow breath to help himself relax. He remembered how it felt to lose himself in the music and forget the outside world while he savored the pleasure of dancing, of being in sync with his partner, of letting the rhythm take over. He wanted to feel that way again, so he focused on the music and Devin, unconsciously drawing Devin a little closer as they moved around the small deck.
They danced on, as the songs flowed together, slow and romantic tunes made for dancing. Then the music stopped, and Devin sighed. “That was wonderful, Paul. I haven’t danced like that in a long time. Thank you.”
“I should be thanking you.” Paul met Devin’s gaze, and gratitude was the easiest but not the only emotion threatening to overwhelm him as he lost himself in Devin’s eyes. “I feel like you’ve been more help to me in just a few days than therapy has been in over a year.”
Devin hadn’t moved away. “I’m glad,” he said softly. “You’re a wonderful person, and you deserve to be happy.”
“I want to be.” Paul found himself smoothing his palm up and down the length of Devin’s back, savoring the warmth seeping through Devin’s shirt. “I think I was in a rut, but being here—being with you—has shaken me out of it.”
The smile on Devin’s face was easy to see even in the darkness. “Good. I can’t take all the credit, though. I think you’d probably worked through a lot of things yourself, and you just needed a little push to get you started down the path.” He touched Paul’s cheek lightly with his fingertips. “When the cruise is over, you need to keep going in the right direction. And if you don’t, I’ll find you and kick your butt for you.”
Paul laughed quietly, not wanting to disturb the strange, private cocoon that had spun around them. “Noted.”
Devin’s gaze fell to Paul’s mouth, and when he spoke, his voice was husky. “I feel so totally selfish right now.”
Paul frowned slightly, puzzled by that apparent non sequitur. “Why?”
“Because if you were still attached, I’d never dream of doing this,” Devin replied, then leaned forward, his eyes sliding closed as he pressed his lips to Paul’s in a gentle kiss.
Startled, Paul froze at first, but the warmth of Devin’s lips was too tempting to resist. It had been so long, and he had been lonelier than he cared to admit. He closed his eyes and parted his lips, a soft moan escaping him.
Devin slid his fingers into Paul’s hair as he accepted the invitation to deepen the kiss. He explored Paul’s mouth, going slowly, twining his tongue with Paul’s, stepping closer until Paul felt the warmth of Devin’s body against the length of his. Paul wound his arms around Devin and clenched his fingers on Devin’s back. This wasn’t smart, and he would likely regret it, but in the moment, all he wanted to do was enjoy the press of Devin’s body against his and the pleasure of a man’s body in his arms. He yielded to Devin’s exploration, offering to give whatever Devin wanted to take.
Devin made a soft sound of pleasure as Paul responded, and kiss flowed into kiss, slow and deep. Devin stroked through Paul’s hair, while he caressed Paul’s back with his other hand, running it slowly from shoulder to hip and back again. The touches were a soothing balm to Paul’s battered heart, and he wanted nothing more than to arch into them like a needy cat, but this couldn’t continue. He couldn’t have this for more reasons than one, and so he drew back with reluctance.
“We should stop,” he whispered.
Drawing in a deep breath, Devin nodded. “You’re right. You were just… irresistible, standing there in the moonlight.”

Seeking Solace will be released on November 6, by Dreamspinner Press.

Review: Seeking Solace (The Walker Boys #3) by Ari McKay

All hands on deck for a shipboard romance—with a secret.

Like his cousins, Devin Walker aspires to be a chef, but he wants to indulge his wanderlust while feeding his customers, and working a cruise ship seems like the solution. Since he can’t find an opening in the kitchen, he’s happy to start out in a position behind the bar.

He doesn’t think he’s attractive to other men anymore, and Devin is eager to show him just how wrong he is. Paul has a surprising secret that might sink their passionate affair before it even leaves port.

Hi, my name is Sara and I am hooked on this series and the Walker boys. Hell, I am hooked on the entire family. Each book in this series delivers what I crave from the Dreamspun line; the sweet romance mixed with just enough character depth and sexiness to make me smile when I need it most. Meeting Devin Walker and the incredible man he falls for gave me swoony moments during a time when I was pulling my hair out from stress.

I love that this begins on a cruise ship with Devin working as a bartender waiting to get a job in the kitchen to put his Culinary degree to good use. It’s no surprise that Devin is into food with who his family is. I mean, his cousin and his cousin’s husband have rival barbecue restaurants in the same town after all and this Walker does not fall far from the prep line.

Sorry. Got sidetracked there. So Devin works onboard Poseidon's Pearl and one night tending bar he meets a handsome stranger. Come the next day, Devin is informed he’s to show said handsome stranger the way of the ship because Paul Bailey, a new executive for the cruise line, wants to know how the ship does its business.

I’ve always liked the idea of romances where two people are thrown together and it makes it better when they are stuck together say on a ship. I don’t know why I like the thought of being thrown together with no escape romantic but I do. The ship had a great modern day Love Boat vibe without being cheesy or about singles hooking up. It just set its course for adventure and your mind on a new romance.

Okay. I need to talk about the book don’t I?

I adored the holy heck out of Devin. Like I said before, I love the Walker boys and it’s no surprise that Devin recognizes there is so much more to Paul than the button down executive he finds attractive and is charged to show around the ship. Devin sees that Paul has a disability but Devin knows Paul is NOT his disability and does whatever he can to show Paul that he is worthy of respect, friendship and love. It pays off that Devin falls hard and fast for Paul and goodness, the man does have a way with words.

Paul was such a pleasure to read, even when his POV would bleed into the melancholy. I can’t imagine what it would be like to have an accident that causes you to lose your leg and the man you thought loved you. It makes sense that Paul would lose himself in work and forget the things he loved to do before the accident to just live his day to day. I am so freaking happy he took the task of checking out one of the ships and too the chance on and with Devin.

Yeah, this book takes place within a matter of weeks and these two fill those weeks with so much fun and adventure. Devin really knows the in’s and outs of the cruise ship and knows how to show Paul what the cruise line offers is vacationers while also taking him to the “locals only” spots that the staff knows about. Devin has been on the ship for months so he also knows where to go when they are in port and when Devin takes Paul to meet his friend and ex-coworker Cass, things get really good.

This was such a lovely read. I liked how the authors handled Paul’s disability and gave Paul and Devin options when it came to the daily life as well as their intimate moments. Devin is the sweetest and most understanding man and Paul did good to put his trust in him and let himself feel again.

There is a bit of angst that happens with Paul’s job but I won’t go into that. It give the story the drama it needed without dragging it down. I LOVED that Devin takes us home and we get to see Beau and Liam for a spell.

I don’t think I said much about the story/plot of this book… hmm.

Death, be not proud…

The conclusion of the war between Elizabeth Bathory and the Guardians of Gaia draws closer, but the theriomorphs and their allies are caught between vampires loyal to Elizabeth Bathory’s daughter, Anna, and humans controlled by Elizabeth and her sire, Thrace. With the forces of evil now pressing on them from two sides, the theriomorphs need help, and they need it fast!

And soonest our best men with thee do go...

It has been five hundred years since Antonio de Barajas, one of the oldest surviving theriomorphs, lost his mate at the hands of his worst enemy. But Gaia never revealed the whole truth about Raphael’s fate, and Antonio is shocked when Raphael arrives to train Evan St. John and Adam Carson as true Dark Guardians. Yet the man who returns after so long is not the same man Antonio once loved. The hard and lonely life as Gaia’s hunter has changed Raphael almost as much as his lost memories of Antonio and the love they once shared.

Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men...

Antonio must work with the stranger who wears his lover’s face, and while Raphael is welcomed by most of the team, one member sees his return as a threat to his own place in Antonio’s life. But Thrace has allied himself with terrorists who possess a weapon of mass destruction. Now the theriomorphs and Dark Guardians must work together in a race against time to discover Thrace’s plan. Even as Antonio and Raphael are irresistibly drawn to one another, Antonio risks losing far more than his heart this time. If he and his team fail in their mission, millions will die, for Thrace will stop at nothing to destroy Gaia once and for all.

If their desperate plan works, the theriomorphs could destroy not only Elizabeth, but the sire of all vampires as well. But if it fails, they could unleash a force leading to the destruction of them all… and perhaps of Gaia herself.

About The Authors

Ari McKay is the professional pseudonym for Arionrhod and McKay, who have been writing together for over a decade. Their collaborations encompass a wide variety of romance genres, including contemporary, fantasy, science fiction, gothic, and action/adventure. Their work includes the Blood Bathory series of paranormal novels, the Herc’s Mercs series, as well as two historical Westerns: Heart of Stone and Finding Forgiveness. When not writing, they can often be found scheming over costume designs or binge watching TV shows together.

Arionrhod is a systems engineer by day who is eagerly looking forward to (hopefully) becoming a full time writer in the not-too-distant future. Now that she is an empty-nester, she has turned her attentions to finding the perfect piece of land to build a fortress in preparation for the zombie apocalypse, and baking (and eating) far too many cakes.

McKay is an English teacher who has been writing for one reason or another most of her life. She also enjoys knitting, reading, cooking, and playing video games. She has been known to knit in public. Given she has the survival skills of a gnat, she’s relying on Arionrhod to help her survive the zombie apocalypse.

Ashville Arcana Series

Blurb

The magic touch.

Ever since Harlan Edgewood was bitten by a possessed werewolf, his monthly shifts have been agonizing. When he meets Whimsy Hickes—a mage who specializes in transformation—the attraction is mutual. But Harlan believes his curse is too great a burden to inflict on any romantic partner.

Fortunately, Whimsy thinks he can help.

When Harlan is provoked into an unexpected change, Whimsy uses his magic to help ease Harlan’s pain, but with an unexpected consequence. While he’s shifted, Harlan’s wolf claims Whimsy as his mate.

As they draw closer, suspicious events in the Asheville magical community escalate. Shifters are disappearing, others are murdered, and Harlan’s curse makes him an obvious target. It will take all of Whimsy’s magic to force back the rising evil—and if he fails, Harlan will lose not only his life, but his very soul.

Fortunately, Whimsy thinks he can help.

When Harlan is provoked into an unexpected change, Whimsy uses his magic to help ease Harlan's pain, but with an unexpected consequence. While he's shifted, Harlan's wolf claims Whimsy as his mate.

As they draw closer, suspicious events in the Asheville magical community escalate. Shifters are disappearing, others are murdered, and Harlan's curse makes him an obvious target. It will take all of Whimsy's magic to force back the rising evil—and if he fails, Harlan will lose not only his life, but his very soul.

Admittedly, I quite liked the first book in this series, but I enjoyed this sequel even more!

It’s been a year since the events in Out of the Ashes, and the shifter and supernatural community in Asheville is slowly recovering from the horrible havoc wrought by a group of demon possessed werewolves. Because it was felt that things were left unfinished, that there’s a more nefarious plan in the works, bonded mates Arden and Eli and their friends are still on high alert for what they feel is another inevitable attack.

One of these allies is Arden’s bff Whimsy. He’s a pretty powerful mage and has been beefing up his magical skills just in case. When Whimsy meets Harlan (Eli’s coworker), the attraction is instant, and he realizes that Harlan is not a werewolf but a lycanthrope, a born-human who was bitten and thus subjected to the torturous moon driven change monthly, something that Harlan has no control over. Whimsy, being the caring gentle soul that he is, offers to help Harlan through his transformation, and Harlan can hardly believe his luck at a chance at reprieve from the painful curse he’s been saddled with for the last 300 years. However, Harlan’s wolf is also piqued by his and Whimsy's mutual attraction, and he balks at the possibility of losing control and hurting anyone, let alone Whimsy.

Thus, this is all about Harlan and his struggle with wanting to be with Whimsy and his need to prevent him harm by his dual nature. However, Whimsy is no weakling, and he’s determined to give aid, whether Harlan accepts it or not. What they both never expect though, is for Harlan to claim Whimsy as his mate. What’s a 300 plus year old virgin to do? Well… what ensues is a seriously sweet and caring courting between these two. In and amongst all this loveliness is of course, insistent evil doers still being sinister.

Very easy reading, quite low on the angst, if you want simple unpretentious with a good dose of supernatural sexy thrown in, then I think this series will go down quite nicely. This really excels at likeable and endearing characters who care about each other and their community and are willing to risk a lot to prevent doom and gloom. Harlan is a fabulous gentle giant, respectful, old fashioned and just so darn good, he contrasts well with Whimsy who has a bit of fire in him that fuels his strong nurturing instincts. Like the first book, the current conflict is resolved, but the overall arc is still ongoing, and I really look forward to seeing grumpy vamp Julian, be the next one to get his long desired HEA!
