Review: Roger by S.J.D. Peterson

Texas native Colt Burrow isn’t happy about his third cold, lonely Christmas in frozen Michigan. But when fate sends him a gift in the form of an abandoned puppy, he can’t keep his heart from melting. With the puppy’s companionship, he doesn’t feel so isolated anymore, and the holidays don’t seem as bleak. He even finds enough Christmas spirit to take Roger tree shopping. But just when Colt’s starting to hope Roger’s owner doesn’t show up… he does, and Colt doesn’t want to say goodbye.

Will Roger end up being Colt’s Christmas heartbreak… or his Christmas miracle?

Pretty much all the hearts go towards the too adorable Fiest, Roger.

Colt is kinda a curmudgeon. Having moved from sunny Florida to freezing Michigan to basically escape an ex boyfriend and start anew, he’s feeling a bit grumpy about the holidays. When he spots a dog shivering in the freezing snow in his backyard, Colt takes him in and his disposition starts to defrost. I mean, how can it not? Roger is smart, cute, and full of personality, and Colt quickly changes his tune about wanting to find Roger’s owner as he grows increasingly attached to the loveable pup.

This being fiction and a holiday story, you know Roger’s owner is going to be hot, single, and gay. Of course, we wouldn’t have it any other way, and despite this having absolutely no smex, the huge sweet factor was enough to leave me quite content and happy!

Thank you to the author/publisher for a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Anna Zabo & Riptide Publishing are here today to promote the newest Bluewater Bay novel, Outside the Lines. Be sure to leave a comment to be entered to win a $25 Riptide credit! Good luck!

About Outside the Lines

Miniature artist Ian Meyers has one week to rebuild his damaged set. Needing help, he goes to End o’ Earth, the local comic and gaming shop. Owner Simon Derry pushes all of Ian’s buttons, and he also has steady hands and the skills Ian needs.

Before they can even grab a beer, Ian meets Lydia Derry, Simon’s wife. If Ian had any interest in women, he’d suggest a threesome, but then Simon explains that he and Lydia are polyamorous, and if Ian wants Simon, neither of them will complain. If anything, Lydia encourages the relationship.

Ian’s all in, and it’s fantastic working with Simon to piece together his set and then take each other apart at night. His friendship with Lydia grows too. The only problem is, the more time he spends with Simon, the more he wants everything Simon already has with Lydia: A house. A cat. A commitment. So Ian runs, and shatters the trust he has with them both—right when they need him the most. Piecing their relationships back together might prove harder than a smashed set.

About Bluewater Bay

Welcome to Bluewater Bay! This quiet little logging town on Washington state’s Olympic Peninsula has been stagnating for decades, on the verge of ghost town status. Until a television crew moves in to film Wolf’s Landing, a soon-to-be cult hit based on the wildly successful shifter novels penned by local author Hunter Easton.

Wolf’s Landing’s success spawns everything from merchandise to movie talks, and Bluewater Bay explodes into a mecca for fans and tourists alike. The locals still aren’t quite sure what to make of all this—the town is rejuvenated, but at what cost? And the Hollywood-based production crew is out of their element in this small, mossy seaside locale. Needless to say, sparks fly.

This collaborative story world is brought to you by eleven award-winning, best-selling LGBTQ romance authors: L.A. Witt, L.B. Gregg, Z.A. MaxfieldHeidi Belleau, Rachel Haimowitz, Anne Tenino, Amy Lane, SE Jakes, G.B. Gordon, Jaime Samms and Ally Blue. Each contemporary novel stands alone, but all are built around the town and the people of Bluewater Bay and the Wolf’s Landing media empire.

Anna grew up in the wilds of suburban Philadelphia before returning to their ancestral homelands in Western Pennsylvania. Review: The King's Courage (North Pole City Tales #6) by Charlie Cochet

With the wedding of Jack Frost and Rudy Rein Dear only three weeks away, everyone travels to Jack’s palace in Svalbard, Norway, where the happy couple will exchange vows beneath the northern lights. Festivities have been planned leading up to the wedding, and Dasher eagerly anticipates not just the fun, but staying under the same roof as the blustering winter spirit who’s caught his eye—the King of Frost, Jack’s father.

A long-ago tragedy has left Eirik fearing to ever love again. As the King of Frost, Eirik maintains his distance from everyone, especially the young Christmas elf who insists on intruding on Eirik’s solitude. But Dasher is determined to find a way to show the lonely king that his heart still beats and he shouldn’t fear allowing it to beat for another.

I look forward to revisiting North Pole City every time a new book comes out! This series is the perfect mix of sweet, sexy, magic, and holiday feels.

This time around, readers get to visit Jack Frost’s palace in Svalbard, Norway. It was equally as enchanting a setting as North Pole City.

From the first book, the King of Frost has been an enigmatic character. He’s a curmudgeonly recluse, but he clearly cares for his family. Dasher, with all of his brazen charm and disregard for the rules, was just the Christmas elf to break through Eirik Frost’s cold hard shell.

When the book starts, Eirik and Dasher are already halfway in love. Since the two first met each other in book 5, they’ve been slowly falling for each other. Dasher’s happy about it, Eirik less so.

I couldn’t help but grin like a fool each time Eirik tried to convince himself that he felt nothing but irritation for the younger elf. He was so obviously smitten!

But slowly, against the backdrop of Jack and Rudy’s wedding, Eirik finally lets himself feel love again. Since his wife’s death, he’s shunned all happiness and warmth.

I thoroughly enjoyed how bold Dasher was. Every time Dasher decides to break the rules and walks right into Eirik’s personal life, Eirik protests a little bit less.

Readers learn more about both MCs’ pasts, and it just made me root for them even more. They were just perfect for each other.

While there is a bit of drama in the second half of the novella, I would still say that this is a fairly low-angst read. Once Eirik gives into what he really wants, he and Dasher are well on their way to a happy ever after!

Overall, this was a very enjoyable holiday read. If you’re looking for an MM series with lots of Christmas cheer, give the North Pole City Tales a try!

Guest Review: Breaking Free (The Den Boys #3) by A.T. Brennan

“I would never forgive myself if something happened to another man I cared about because I’d been careless and given in to temptation.” ~ Zander

The last thing I was looking for was a relationship, then I laid eyes on a dancer at a nightclub and my entire world was flipped upside down. Kai is everything I’ve ever wanted, but shouldn’t have. I’m haunted by a past I can’t seem to break free from, and I’m not sure I can be the man Kai deserves. He makes me want to try, but I worry that I’m broken beyond repair.

“There was already a big enough stigma attached to being a go-go dancer, but add being a webcam model to the mix and people tended to assume things about me.” ~ Kai

School, dance, cam, repeat. My life was on a constant loop as I struggled to keep my head above water. After seeing Zander in the crowd while I was dancing, I knew I had to meet the handsome stranger who took my breath away. I don’t know if I’m the right man to help set him free from his pain, but I’m going to do everything I can to try and help him see that the past doesn’t have to define his future.

*This is Book 3 of The Den Boys series, but can be read as a standalone. No cheating, no cliffhangers, and trigger warnings are listed in the book before the table of contents.

*This 74,000 word book is intended for an 18+ audience. It is a story of male/male romance and love. There are graphic depictions of man parts doing naughty and sexy things, so please be sure this is the kind of book for you before reading.

This whole series has caught me by surprise. The angst remains low-key and the characters are very believable.

In this installment, we get to see Zander's story. The big, protective guy we got a peek of here and there in the first couple of books gets his time to shine here. I wondered what his story was, since he seemed so reserved all the time, and now that I know I kind of wish I didn't. It's some seriously sad shit.

sad shit-breaking free review pics

I absolutely loved Skylar/Kai. He was unapologetic about who he was, what he did, and he went after what he wanted. He was strong, and astute, and had a freaking adorable personality to boot. He and Zander were perfect for each other.

There were some bumps in the road, sure, but no OTT craziness to speak of. These guys communicated after a little bit of a hiccup in the beginning and worked on their relationship. What a concept!

I'm duly impressed with this author's reinterpretation of some fairly common themes. Rather than being predictable or formulaic, what you get with this series and this book is the road less traveled, and it is:

fan-freaking-tastic-breaking free review pics

It's not all rainbows and unicorns, no worries! There are a few niggles. It could be a little more polished. I get the sense that maybe the author is just catching their stride here ... these titles are getting progressively better, and quickly. I can see the positive changes from book 1 to now, so I have no doubt things will continue to improve. Given that the writing didn't start off at anything resembling an extreme disadvantage, I'm excited to see any further growth.

Sometimes the pacing is erratic; it's occasionally too rushed in some areas and almost meandering in others. And although I'm enjoying (immensely) the low-angst reads, in the world these guys live in things are almost too easy.

I know that's a little contradictory given what I said about the themes vs plotlines being refreshingly 'outside of the box' but I think kicking things up a half a notch would make the series more believable over the long term chronologically speaking.

warp and weft-breaking free review pics

Even if there was just a single continuous thread running through the series, something that plagued the group as a whole across the series, that would make these 5 star reads. I think it's a classic divergence of standalone vs continuity. While these are fantastic in that they can be read separately, I think they'd be better with an overarching theme.

Maybe I'm on crack (not!) or maybe I'm tired (always!) but I'm standing by what I've said here. I realize I'm a bit of an outlier amongst other reviewers of this title who fell more in the 'average' range, but these books—this one in particular—really appealed to me.

Is it earthshattering? No. But it's been a week since I read it and I've forgotten very few of the details. That is not common with my brain (TBI) and nor is it the norm considering the number of books I read every week. The fact that it's sticking with me so easily means it resonated as an overall fantastic read.

highest fives-breaking free review pics

I'm excited to see what comes next. I recommend this book for anyone who wants a relatively stress-free read with well-developed characters and relative real-world authenticity.

Author Bio

Jamie Fessenden is an author of gay fiction in many genres. Most involve romance, because he believes everyone deserves to find love, but after that anything goes: contemporary, science fiction, historical, paranormal, mystery, or whatever else strikes his fantasy.

Jamie Fessenden set out to be a writer in junior high school. He published a couple short pieces in his high school's literary magazine and had another story place in the top 100 in a national contest, but it wasn't until he met his partner, Erich, almost twenty years later, that he began writing again in earnest. With Erich alternately inspiring and goading him, Jamie wrote several screenplays and directed a few of them as micro-budget independent films. He then began writing novels and published his first novella in 2010. After nine years together, Jamie and Erich have married and purchased a house together in the wilds of Raymond, New Hampshire, where there are no street lights, turkeys and deer wander through their yard, and coyotes serenade them on a nightly basis.

Jamie recently left his “day job” as a tech support analyst to be a full-time writer.

Blog Tour: Getting His Man (Getting His Man, #1) by B.G. Thomas

B.G. Thomas is here today to tell us about his latest Dreamspun Desires novel, Getting His Man & ICYMI see our 4 review of it HERE.

Promotion for Boy Meets Boy

My mom was always reading. She taught me to love books. And if it was a book a little above my reading level, then she read them to me!

Of course the books she was reading for her own pleasure and the books she was reading to me were very different. She was reading me The Time Machine by H.G. Wells and a book about the coelacanth, something very exciting to a little boy who loved dinosaurs. And she was reading Harlequin and Silhouette romances.

Well that confused a little boy! Why a book with a man and woman kissing on the cover when she could be reading a book about an ancient living fossil? So I asked her.

This is what she told me. “It’s because of the happy endings,” she said. “And I love to read about people falling in love. I like knowing before I ever start the book that nothing really bad will happen. I like knowing they will have their happily ever after.” Eeeeeeww! I thought. How gross.

And here I am blankety-blank years later writing just those kinds of stories. Except of course they’re about boys kissing boys. But they’re still falling in love and they are still getting their happily ever afters.

You know they whole time I was writing this book I couldn’t help but think of my mother. It made me feel pretty warm and bubbly inside. Like things had come full circle or something. It feels nice.

Something else too….

When I was in high school Mom told me that another thing she liked about those books is that there was no cheating. And in the Dreamspun Desires books, there is no cheating. And not a lot of angst.

And when you are a writer who normally writes books with lots of angst let me tell you something. Writing a book with no angst, no cheating, and a big happily ever after was very fun to write. Lots of fun! And having that much fun means that a lot of that fun made its way into the pages of my book Getting His Man.

Here is the cover blurb:

GETTING HIS MAN
A love story worthy of an old movie... with a new twist.

Artie needs a hero, a man like those he’s always revered in Golden Age films. His drug-dealing jerk of a roommate got him arrested, and since his savior isn’t likely to sweep in and save the day, Artie calls a bail bondsman.

August has always imagined himself a hero from a black-and-white movie, but he’s never found a man willing to let him play that role—at least not until he gets the call from Artie.

Both of their dreams might come true, but not before August must use his skills as a bounty hunter as well as a bondsman. Artie is on the run for his life, and August must protect him and help him clear his name. Only then can they both finally get their man.

That novel is out right now and just ready for you to read. You will find a sweet young man named Artie that gets caught up in something that scares him to death. And it is also about a macho bounty hunter hero named August who sweeps in and rescues him. Or does he? Maybe, just maybe, Artie rescues him…. Audiobook Review: Tramps and Thieves (Murder and Mayhem #2) by Rhys Ford

Whoever said blood was thicker than water never stood in a pool of it.

Retiring from stealing priceless treasures seemed like a surefire way for Rook Stevens to stay on the right side of the law. The only cop in his life should have been his probably-boyfriend, Los Angeles Detective Dante Montoya, but that’s not how life—his life—is turning out. Instead, Rook ends up not only standing in a puddle of his cousin Harold’s blood but also being accused of Harold’s murder…and sleeping with Harold’s wife.

For Dante, loving the former thief means his once-normal life is now a sea of chaos, especially since Rook seems incapable of staying out of trouble—or keeping trouble from following him home. When Rook is tagged as a murder suspect by a narrow-focused West L.A. detective, Dante steps in to pull his lover out of the quagmire Rook’s landed in.

When the complicated investigation twists around on them, the dead begin to stack up, forcing the lovers to work together. Time isn’t on their side, and if they don’t find the killer before another murder, Dante will be visiting Rook in his prison cell—or at his grave.

Narrator: Greg Tremblay
Listening Length: 7 hrs and 53 mins

One should be happy to know that there’s no sophomore slump here!

A couple months have passed, and Rook is trying to adjust. Adjust to his honest living. Adjust to his loving supportive relationship with his once sworn adversary, homicide detective Dante Montoya. He’s determined to go the lawful path and maybe, just maybe, he can finally put down roots and live happily ever after. The thing is, Rook’s past just won’t let him go that easily.

This is probably one of the the least “insta” of Ford’s creations, and I appreciated how the feelings have evolved between Dante and Rook over time. Full of vulnerability, insecurity, want and need, there’s nothing lacking here in the love and smex department. I liked how these men take care of each other, that despite being opposites in all the ways, they still connect where it counts in and out of the bedroom. Such a strong foundation is going to be needed, especially due to Rook’s illegal past that keeps knocking on his door, not to mention the rapid piling of dead bodies that just won’t quit.

What this also excels at is character development. Of course it never hurts to have Tremblay narrate. He’s the master at subtlety and accents, and as always, is just plain fabulous. Overall, I definitely wouldn’t say no to more of these flawed, fierce and loyal men, as well as the vibrant cast that supports them. Thankfully, this ends on a note that strongly hints that Ford has more in store for these two, and that's always a good thing!!!

Happy Holidays,

Boy Meets Boy Reviews

Review: Yours for the Holiday by D.J. Jamison

Fresh off a break-up, Remy is in no mood to share a room with his brother's best friend during a holiday stay at home. Jason Hendricks has always treated him like a little brother to tease and taunt, all the more embarrassing because Remy has secretly crushed on the jerk since puberty. But when Jason confides he's bisexual, Remy realizes the crush he loves to hate could be the perfect rebound.

Jason has always found Remy appealing. He didn't handle his attraction well when he was younger, but now Remy's a grown man and Jason's no longer afraid of his feelings. Some playful flirtation sounds like a great way to spend Thanksgiving break, but he's not prepared for Remy's newfound sex appeal or his decision to make Jason his rebound fling. Jason doesn't want to risk fallout with a family that's always been there for him, but he's not sure he can resist.

When the two part ways, they don't plan to stay in touch, but soon they're texting, trading sexy pictures and helping each other cope with family drama. Remy agrees to be his for the holiday, continuing their secret fling over Christmas, but Jason knows that won't be enough. He'll have to find the courage to be open and honest with his best friend -- and the whole Wells family -- if he wants a chance at love in the new year.

That cover…

no.gif

I waffled back and forth on my rating with this one for a few days. *sigh* It was just okay. The characters were decent (when they weren’t whiny and changing their minds every scene), being fully accepted and loved by a surrogate family hits me in my happy place, and the premise of best friend's little brother appeals to me. It had potential but fell a bit short in execution.

Jason (JJ) Hendricks is heading home for Thanksgiving. His home is the cabin of his best friend's (Derek) family, the Wells. JJ has a dysfunctional family situation with an absent father and an addict of a mother. The Wells family has been his true family… even Remy, Derek’s younger brother and the guy JJ loves to hate and hates to love.

Remy has been in love with JJ forever. He was Remy's first crush and those feelings never went away even though they are constantly tearing into each other. This is the first Thanksgiving they will both be attending at the same time in years. They also have to share a room. Much to Remy’s surprise, JJ is not as straight as an arrow but has yet to come out as bisexual. Ohhhh the temptation for manty wearing Remy. Unfortunately Remy is straight off a break up and JJ can’t risk losing the only family he has. One thing leads to another; red satin here, an ass grab there, hand job after and both men find themselves in situations neither expected. There were some redeeming qualities; They had decent chemistry with some heat. There was also a teasing element to their interactions that I enjoyed along with the familiarity of life long friends.

Welp, that’s pretty much it. There wasn’t enough depth in this story to make it more interesting. The synopsis for the book pretty much includes everything that happens throughout. Yes, there is some added unnecessary drama thrown in with Derek (Waaaaaaaay OTT) and some J.V. level drama with JJ’s parents, Other than that, just the back and forth between the two MCs in a “We shouldn’t/ We should/ We can’t/ But here’s a dick pic” kind of way. I actually liked JJ and Remy as individuals. I forgave the lack of relationship development because they had known each other for years while growing up. I even forgave the abundance of mundane details that were included throughout. But, what was left didn’t make up enough to move my opinion from okay to like.

Shrug.gif

If you’re looking for a low key, low angst, predictable read, this may be for you. It wasn’t terrible but I needed more.

When one of his neighbors shows up out of the blue insisting that Christmas decorations are mandatory per their lease, he rolls and goes along with it as long as he doesn’t personally have to do anything.

The fact that the guy filled with “cheer” is the most attractive man he’s seen in his new hometown has nothing to do with it. He does agree to dinner, though.

Will the determined ghost get her way and make this an unforgettable Christmas for Ash and Tristan?

THE CHARITY SHOP REJECTS - LIVE IN CONCERT
Mikaal Sarhadi has been in trouble since the moment he met guitarist Declan Hyde. Declan treats music like religion, setting high standards for himself and his bandmates. After a chance meeting with Brandon, Declan’s estranged brother, reveals just how much Declan will sacrifice for his music, Mikaal wonders if he can even call himself a musician. Worse, drummer Hiro’s visa application has been denied. With time running out for The Charity Shop Rejects, Mikaal must conquer his stage fright or lose music—and Declan—entirely.

Spending an unexpected holiday break alone following his parents’ sudden death, thirty-something lawyer Zane Anders attends to unfinished business: getting his parents’ dilapidated Cape Cod cottage ready to sell and retrieving a mysterious Christmas present Zane’s mother left behind. But an acquaintance from the past interrupts his solitude at the beach. Christopher DeVries has morphed awfully fast from the awkward, infatuated teenager Zane remembers to a handsome college senior living next door. He’s still too young for Zane. Although he’s remarkably mature…and beguiling.

Deterred by their age difference, Zane hesitates to make the first move. But when a fierce Nor’easter closes highways and paralyzes the Cape, both Zane’s and Christopher’s Christmas plans are rewritten.

So what if winter isn’t beach weather?

As Christmas approaches the magical charms Carmen has to use to fight off her curse are taking a toll on her health. But that can’t stop her from taking her final test to become a Dragon Keeper. If she passes her test she gets her dragon, if not, she has to start all over, relying on different magical charms to fight the curse for her. That is something Carmen doesn’t want to have to go through. The testing is difficult and charms make her sick. Carmen has decided that if she doesn’t get her dragon this Christmas she’s not going to go for a third attempt, even if that means she can’t marry Mattie when she grows up.
