Review: Out by Cara Dee

“I guess I always figured coming out was something you did for friends and family, and maybe it is, but it’s personal too, you know? The person I was last night is new. I wanna get to know him.”

I had two things on my list when I arrived in Los Angeles. One, track down Henry Bennington, the uncle and guardian of my little brother’s best friend, and tell him to get his ass back to Washington. He needed to do something about his nephew, who was turning into a douchebag. And two, figure out just how non-straight I was. For the past two years, I’d had all these fantasies, and now was the time to explore them, far away from my sleepy little town.

Nowhere on this list did it say, “Get Ty’s uncle into bed and fall for him.” I wasn’t supposed to fall in love with another city either. But between brunch, making new friends, and discovering the man I was meant to be, I lost sight of the future that had once seemed pretty damn vivid. How the hell was I supposed to merge my old life and who I used to be with the new dreams Los Angeles and Henry had awakened in me?

*taps mic*

Hello, dissenting opinion coming your way. This book didn’t work for *me* but there are a TON of other people who are squeeing over it. I had to channel my inner Dory to get through it. Just keep swimming. Since this wasn’t my jam, I swam like a boss to get to the end and came away feeling meh.

Zach, one of the MCs had been raising his brother long before he got custody at age 18. Having to grow up before his time, he is now a 27 year old that’s questioning his sexual identity. Zach decides that he can do this in Los Angeles under the guise of contacting the uncle of his brother’s best-friend(Ty) while he’s there. Ty is acting like a rich brat and Zach wants his uncle to come knock some sense into him. When Zach arrives in L.A. to meet with Ty’s uncle, he was expecting an old, uptight, suited business man. What he got was Henry, rocking his flip flops, cargos, and a drool worthy body. Ty who?

Henry is a 46 year old book store owner that became estranged from his parents after coming out. After the death of his brother and sister-in-law, Henry was awarded full custody of his nephew, Ty. However, for various reasons, Ty lives with his grandparents. Henry desperately wants a relationship with Ty and is grateful for Zach’s intervention.

Soooo, what didn’t work for me?

Zach. Zach didn’t work for me. The book was written strictly in his POV and I didn’t connect with him. He seemed childish most of the time with some maturity splashed in on occasion. There were many situations I had to toss up to his newfound sexual exploration or I’d have a headache. Henry wasn’t all roses either but he had some redeeming qualities that didn’t put me off completely. There was an insta-loveish connection without actually saying the words right away. I’m talking about the stage 10 clinger, no-condoms-needed-I’m-clean-and-I-trust-you-you’re-the-one, fast connection.

What else?

Everything seemed over the top and juvenile for 27 and 46 year old men. After discussing this with a fellow reader, apparently these situations were supposed to be funny. But, to me they fell flat. As a pancake. I may have appreciated the “humor” more if I had Henry’s POV where not everything was so dramatic. Zach wanted to be seen as a grown man that could make his own decisions; but that was contradictory to his thoughts, words, actions and reactions to others.

Another point of frustration was the writing style. We were told everything. Inferencing is a thing. But I felt like I sat through a 299 page lecture on insta-love, brunch and the L.A. scene. Telling, not showing + Zach = Sadface

Just Keep Swimming.

There were some odd additions to the story like Joseph, the return of Martin’s ex, and a situation at the corner store that didn’t add anything except more OTT drama IMO. By time I hit the Martin’s ex debacle, I was already over it and the supposed humor was flyin’ right by me.

Just Keep Swimming.

What worked for me?
I loved Martin “the queen” and Zach’s grandmother, Nan. They were both fun characters. Martin was fierce and had a great sense of humor. Sometimes OTT works and other times it doesn’t. Martin, Nan and their over the topness worked for me. Nan is everything I hope to be in 50 years; snarky, completely inappropriate, forever young, and loads of unconditional love to offer.

I also liked the premise that an older (not a teen) male decides to explore the questions he has about his sexuality instead of just sticking with the status quo of the previous 27 years. IMO, this story could have held up on that plot point alone without the minor role the Ty/Henry storyline ended up playing.

I wish I felt more of a connection. I also wish there was a dual POV to lessen the blow of Zach’s personality. Zach found answers about his sexuality and he got his HEA with Henry. *shrug* I’d recommend this book based on the fact that I’m in the minority with my feels and hope it’s a different reading experience for you.

Review: That Doesn't Belong Here by Dan Ackerman

That Doesn't Belong Here begins when Levi and his friend Emily discover an impossible creature in an abandoned pick up. The thing is wounded, frightened and the two friends cannot leave him to the mercy of rubberneckers and tourists. This novel explores what it means to be a person, as the creature, Kato, begins to display not mere intelligence or friendliness but what can only be explained as humanity. The question of who we are allowed to love arises for Levi and Kato, as they are not just crossing the boundaries of gender or sexuality, but of species.

Well that was an odd little story with an equally odd cover, but it was still quite the charming gem if I do say so myself.

Levi and his bff Emily, happen to find and rescue a sea creature one day while out on the beach. Injured, they help provide a safe place for this mysterious being to heal, and what unfolds is a slow friendship into something more.

For me, where this story excels at is Kato. Perhaps because there is a language barrier, he is seemingly innocent and sweet, and as he’s exposed to Levi and Emily’s world, his wonder, confusion, and interest in everything is what makes this so enjoyable. What’s particularly beguiling is that Kato has no artifice. The world to him is quite straightforward, and it was humbling to see how the messy nuances of being human often get in the way of the truth. As he learns English and more about the lives of his friends, Kato makes known his attraction to Levi. What evolves is Levi’s awakening and realizing who he is and how he defines himself, and it’s exhilarating and terrifying all at the same time.

Of course, there’s a bit of plot drama that involves Kato being discovered, and this I didn’t enjoy as much. However, I liked how this takes the metaphor of a mystical being who’s obviously not like everyone else and aptly shows that just because one is different, that doesn’t mean their feelings and their right to live, love, and be free is not valid. The emphasis to not judge or label, to fight for what you want, rings very strongly here.

Overall, I obviously loved the endearing vulnerable character that is Kato and how he changes several lives he comes into contact with, ultimately, with the potential to do more. This excelled at all the awkward and sweet that is NA with a dash of sexy thrown in. As a warning, this kinda ends abruptly in my opinion, albeit, with a hopeful, strong HFN. I only wish that there was an epilogue or a satisfactory conclusion that solidified my belief that Levi and Kato were successful at being truly together despite their many differences.

Thank you to the author/publisher for a copy in exchange for an honest review.

It sounds like the stupidest idea in the history of stupid ideas. Detective Inspector Josh Ingram wants to find a deadly medieval locket and through it, a murderer. So why does his boss decide to team him up with Matisse Vervein, a pop idol many consider just a pretty face... and expect the two of them to hunt down an art thief?

Marissa Godwin, Matisse's no-nonsense manager, isn't stupid. Neither is her brother-in-law, Detective Superintendent Tim Montgomery. Each is looking out for a lonely man on the verge of quitting what he does best, and both believe that their charges would make a great team.

The attraction sizzling between Josh and Matisse is hard to miss, but there's plenty of resentment, too. Focussed on pushing Josh and Matisse towards each other, Marissa and Tim haven't imagined the kind of trouble a music star and a detective can find when they ditch their prejudices and accept that the attraction between them is mutual. Or how far each is prepared to go to prove it to the other.

A feel-good, action adventure romance set in England and Scotland, featuring a reluctant pop star who's not out, a detective trying his hand at being a bodyguard, plenty of adventure, and a happy ending.

Anniversary Shenanigans: Author Visit + Giveaway: Cardeno C.

Are you feeling stuffed? Let's hope not because we have more fun visits and prizes to share! Today's first author jamming with us needs no introduction. If you're a long time MM reader, you must have encountered this author once or twice.

We're so happy to have Cardeno C. take over today! Stick around for the sweet visit and prize! *passes mic*

Happy anniversary to Boy Meets Boy! I love reading romance stories as much as I love writing them. (Sometimes more.) When I’m choosing new books to read, I often rely on reviews, like those here on Boy Meets Boy or from readers. So in the spirit of honoring reader recommendations, I decided to use this opportunity to ask my readers for their thoughts on my books. Here are some of their responses:

Your books give me the greatest gift  - a safe place to relax, have fun and feel good. There is something to love about every single character, but I especially love how every man finds the yin to his yang. Be it a neurotic rock star who finds himself and true love, or a maths professor finding his confidence and joy in a contractor, the love is real. It lasts. The HEA is a given, and in the current world, I need every bit of joy I can find. My favorite dialogue would have to be a tie between Oliver & Jamie in Not a Game (such clever funny guys) or Trevor & Ford in Strange Bedfellows (such big feelings and drive). To summarize, I adore the smartly written strong men you conjure for your readers ❤ - Shee Reader

My absolute favourite scene is Mitch's declaration in Chapter 7 of Blue Mountain. His absolute selflessness and steadfastness that Simon is his mate and would come before all others epitomizes the alpha/omega fated mates storyline. Makes my heart swoon :) -- Becky L

One of my fave CC books is Love at First Sight. There’s such love, such earnestness, that you can’t help but root for Jonathan. -- Bijou Bleu

One part that always makes me cry is in Love At First Sight when Jonathan says to David, “It’s like you see me.”  Gets me every time.  There’s sweetness in every one of your books, but to me, that book is the sweetest. -- Meredith

The Half of Us...easily my favorite.  Incredibly developed characters; relationship development that is not rushed--and the story is very focused on the relationship development, something that I LOVE in any romance book; scorching hot; and the audio version is so fantastic that I have lost count (like really, truly have lost count) of how many times I've listened to it.  I also love how we get to see back into the lives of the other characters from this series/collection--this made the whole series more satisfying overall. -- Carra Saig

One of the MANY reasons I enjoyed "Johnnie" so much was that it touched on a topic that is important to our daily interactions, but is often missed: perception and visibility. There is no one "reality" because everyone has individual experiences that shape what and how they perceive the world, and until we can be more empathetic and outward-focused, we will continue to overlook, dismiss and sometimes hurt people who don't share our views. Moreover, we close ourselves off to opportunities to expand our horizons in potentially amazing ways, a concept "Johnnie" captured beautifully. – Jovan

The Family Collection was one of the first series I listened to when I first turned to m/m.  I still think More Than Anything is one of my favourite m/m/m.  – ErrynB

Thank you so much to readers and bloggers for helping us choose our next great read!

Audiobook Review: Signs of Life (Resilient Love #2) by Melanie Hansen

Successful lawyer Jeremy Speer has it all—a loving husband, a beautiful home, and a cherished dream that’s about to become reality. He’s learned not to take happiness for granted, meeting the challenges of life and love head-on with unwavering commitment and fierce devotion. A series of tragic events leave Jeremy shattered, adrift on a sea of unimaginable pain. He’s able to piece his life back together, but instead of embracing it, he merely exists, using isolation and punishing physical exertion to keep the world at bay.

High school teacher Kai Daniels has a heart for at-risk kids—he was one himself, and a teenage brush with the law and some troubled years behind bars left him scarred inside and out. With courage, hard work, and the support of friends, he’s built a fulfilling life that leaves no time for a relationship.

An intense encounter with Kai at a gay club ignites a spark in Jeremy that he thought was extinguished forever, but he’s unwilling to destroy the fragile peace he’s managed to create, and he leaves Kai humiliated and disappointed. Things should have ended there, but a bizarre occurrence brings the two together in a way neither of them expected.

Listening Length: 8 hours and 13 minutes
Narrator: Robert Nieman

Signs of Life is a hurt/comfort romance that features two damaged men that came from different walks of life that find love by chance set in Oregon.

Jeremy Speer is a lawyer whose world was turned upside down for the worst and he reacts even more worse. It took him some time but he turned it around some and functioned by shutting everything out. Kai Daniels is an alternative high school teacher who was formerly at risk himself. He's streetwise due to being raised there. He is used to to life giving you shit instead of lemons. These two happen to live in the same town and meet one fateful and very hawt night at a club.

But before we take a magical trip onto the fire that is the chemistry between Jeremy and Kai., let's discuss that beginning shall we?

The beginning! WTF? It was two of the worst things that could happen to person, consecutively. Not even 3% and it felt like the world was ready to crash in. I actually stared at my Kindle for a minute or two wondering WTF more could happen. I read/listened to the entire thing from that point with trepidation and shield over my chest cavity just waiting for the next angst attack to happen.

(No tears because...

...Book! The eyes were dry. So hah!)

Let me get what I didn't care for as much out the way, so I can get to the good stuff. The good obviously outweighed the...not as good for me.

- the students - I know there are a lot of at risk teens out in the world. I've known a few in passing, know some now. Something about the lingo the kids spoke read a little off to me. Not all the time, but sometimes. I might be overthinking it but the West Coast vibe would vary from region to region right? Why was I getting Cali vibes from these kids for a setting in Oregon. It's a niggle of mine. I can't help but mention it as I would sometimes cringe at the narrator and text (and not for he words you might think) it read less authentic. Which brings me to the next thing...

- the teenager whisperer/ walking textbook - Kai was a former juvenile delinquent who is now reformed and teaches current delinquents. Uh-huh. He was borderline perfect. But overall I like Kai just sometimes the ease ruined the realistic vibe the story had going. And the clinical terms while speaking such as dysthymia, that read more like a educate the reader moment rather than have Kai speak regularly to a lover. It's a pet peeve of mine when the dialogue gets research-y rather than having people have normal conversation. It's a info dump moment. Kai was a mix of things former street tough, teacher, informal psychologist/counselor. I feel the mix of those different facets could have been smoother.

- Leticia - I wanted just a sentence of some sort of acknowledgement from Jeremy. He was healing, letting go of his anger at life. What happened to what he did in the beginning? If he's turning a new leaf, what about that one?

My niggles didn't ruin the story. It just made me pause or wonder if this would really happen. The angst got heavy handed in the beginning but it mellowed out for the rest of the book. In fact other than mostly internal and a few communication issues, the angst was pretty low.

This is my second Robert Nieman audio book. I actually listened to his narration of book #1 and  feel the same about both books. He doesn't do a variation of voices, sometimes he might act out some action, sometimes he might pronounce words funny but he was steady. Do I think another narrator could have done a better job? Yep. He paused at odd points a few times, rushed though text where as I read didn't call for it. But it wasn't bad. His narration is more of 3.75 Hearts rounded up.

The good though? Hansen can twist a tale. Nieman didn't enhance the writing. However, I enjoyed having him read her words. Because the words were good, really good.

Smutsters, this is a book you want to eye. The sex is a-plentiful!

Listen to me... You listening? *stares* Melanie Hansen can write a fuck scene. She didn't reinvent the wheel but she sure made that motherfucker spin. Wow! It was a checklist of my faves: SNOWBALLING, RIMMING, ROUGH SEX...PUBLIC SEX!

Those two couldn't get of each other. Both had unlimited rides to PoundTown and they acted like they only had one ride left on their ticket.

I love hook up to romance stories. And at first these men didn't seem like they could get anything meaningful since the sexual tension played a major factor and (a certain someone did a major DICK MOVE--twice!) But once the fella interacted outside of the sheets, I was on board.

While this can be read as standalone, the epilogue features followup to book #1's main characters and I squeed! It also covered this book's HEA pretty nicely.

For the most part, I bought it. Kai and Jeremy are very good for each other. They will continue to help each other heal. They will fuck it up from time to time but there is a shared bond and willingness to try.

Sometimes that's all you need.

Recommended for hurt/comfort fans, for sure-- audio or eBook works just fine (though I loved reading it slightly more)!

Highly Unexpected

I was pleasantly surprised by this short. I have to admit I wasn’t expecting the twist, although the MCs names did tweak my hmm-meter enough that I was surprised but not in cardiac arrest when things shook out the way they did. There was a thread of sadness running through this little nugget of a story which, paradoxically, morphs into an oddly hopeful ending where things remain mournfully unresolved.

The ending left us with some hope that something might eventually work out even though it’s not at all clear whether or not that is ultimately advisable. What can I say? I always root for the underdogs and I’m a firm believer that ‘bad’ guys aren’t always all ‘bad’ and ‘good’ guys are rarely all ‘good’. I’m morally ambiguous that way sometimes.

The fact that the present, chronologically speaking, is one-sided on-page and there’s no HFN or HEA is not necessarily a bad thing. The lack of resolution isn’t strictly a drawback here because the plot is inherently a long-game kind of scenario despite the relative brevity of the story itself. The possible ramifications of making a bad decision in the scenario the MCs are enmeshed in are, quite literally, potential world-enders. Like, Armageddon world-enders.

I did knock the rating down a notch because the ‘relationship’ part of the story was all flashback and nothing new happened in ‘real time’. However, none of my observations thus far are meant to be construed as criticism. So, unless any of that is a dealbreaker for you as a reader … well, this title is worth reading just for the fact that it’s surprising. In the world of repetitive themes and predictable plots, in my opinion being ‘surprising’ is enough of an accomplishment to make reading it a no brainer.

Given the limited page-time, I’m ultimately satisfied with how it ended, but I was a little disappointed because I was intrigued enough to want more. Hopefully that’s something on offer in the future from this author, but who knows? If nothing else, I got to read a little bit of a mindbender and connected with the character(s) enough along the way to care what happens to them. You can’t ask for much more than that from a short story.

Anniversary Shenanigans: Author Visit + Giveaway - Kelly Jensen

Thank goodness, Kelly Jensen has arrived! She is seriously delivering the goods! She talks about her new release, Counting on You, wrote sci-fi flash fiction and is giving away an entire series to ONE lucky person!

Take it away, Kelly!

Happy anniversary, Boy Meets Boy Reviews!
November also sees the release of the final story in my Counting series, Counting on You. In the first two novellas, Henry and Marc found themselves trapped in a rental car on the side of the road during a blizzard, and in the basement laundry of an apartment building in downtown Boston. In Counting on You, Henry and Marc travel to DC, and I had a lot of fun thinking about places they could find themselves stuck.
The train on the way down? I wouldn’t wish three hours in an Amtrak bathroom on my worst enemy. The elevator at the hotel? Been there, done that, it’s not fun. The revolving door at the front of a building? A supply closet at the offices of their client? Maybe the boardroom? Somewhere in the metro system? Inside a national monument! I even thought up a few hostage situations.
In the end I didn’t lock them anywhere (well, except for that one place in the last chapter…) because this is the story that will determine whether or not Henry and Marc have what it takes to make their fledging relationship last. The traps are of the emotional variety this time, and they’ll have to count on each other to find their way out. (See what I did there!)
I’d love to give the entire series away to one lucky reader. (Counting Fence Posts, Counting Down and Counting on You.) To enter, answer the following question:
Who would you like to be trapped with? For a bonus entry, tell me where you’re stuck and how you plan to get out!

New Release Details:
Counting on You (Counting #3)
Henry and Marc can’t seem to catch a break. They’ve had two disastrous dates—the first trapped in a car during a blizzard and the second locked in a basement—followed by nearly two months apart. Even though they work for the same firm, their relationship is held together by flying visits, phone calls, and text messages. A joint assignment in Washington D.C. might be more togetherness than they can handle, however.
Henry is still battling insecurity, and this assignment is too important to his career to mess up. Marc is committed. He’s falling for Henry and looks forward to having him permanently on his team and at his side. But the real test isn’t the assignment. When Marc finally lays his heart on the line, can he count on Henry to be there for him, in every way that matters? And can he do the same for Henry when Henry needs it the most?
Coming November 22, 2017 from Dreamspinner Press.

Flash Fiction Piece: The Spark by Kelly Jensen
That I can ignore the storm breaking across my back is a pretty clear indication I’m facing something… not good. I’m aware of the chaos behind me a peripheral way. The rain licking coldly across my shoulders and the ache of my feet. Running barefoot when it’s wet is a dangerous hobby. I’d resolve not to take it up, but I’ve got bigger problems—one being the Spark dancing in my palm. He wants me to climb down into the other problem: a hole in the ground. If there’s one thing I hate more than lighting and thunder, it’s the dark.
I’m really not cut out for this hero thing.
Are you sure? I’m playing for time, we both know it. But it’s dark down there. Really dark.
I’ll light the way.
The tickle of his voice against my inner ear isn’t very reassuring, but it’s all I’ve got right now.
Still, I hesitate for an entirely useless moment, imagining all the ways I could die in the next few moments. My poor, battered feet could slip on any one of these rocks. Or several at once. Something even scarier than the dark could lie in wait, just out of sight. My favourite—not—is the darkness itself swallowing me up. Extinguishing me like a candle flame deprived of air. Correspondingly, my chest tightens and breathing becomes an issue.
I’m about to think it again. Ask it one more time. Is he sure? The wind takes the decision out of my hands. A harsh gust rips me away from the edge of the hole, rocking me back to the ground. Lighting arcs downward at just that moment, and I squeeze my eyes shut and wait for the sizzle in the middle of my forehead. My back hurts as much as my feet. The rocks are not soft and I didn’t just lie back.
I almost welcome the strike, even though I know having my brain cooked inside my skull is probably the worst way to die. Way more painful than falling down a hole and/or being swallowed by darkness.
It’s the warmth in my hand that brings me back, reminding me of why I’m here. Why we’re here. This isn’t for my sake. We didn’t have to run for me; though now I’ve started I won’t be able to stop. We did it for him. And not just because he is my light and the only person I would abandon my so-called life for.
We did it because his light doesn’t really belong to me. He’ll let me have as much as I want. His affection has never been in question. But if he is to fulfill his destiny—a word that has accrued twice as many syllables than are visible when applied to everything he plans to accomplish—we have to go down into the dark.
I’ll light the way.
He doesn’t need to say it again, but I hear the words anyway.
Wrapping my fingers around him, I cup the Spark to my chest and crawl back to the edge of the hole. Here we go. I jump and trust him to throw back the shadows until we touch the ground.

So good, right? Let Kelly know what you thought of the Spark below! We thank Kelly for partying with us today!
