Chapter One
1987

I first realised I wasn’t quite like other boys when I was seven. By then, I was old enough to know what I liked and what I didn’t like and, more importantly, confident and talkative enough to do something about it.

One afternoon, when Dad was at work and Mum was making cakes in the kitchen, I found a pile of Mum’s large dresses in the living room, waiting to be ironed. I knew they were hers as I’d seen her bustling about the house in them, just before Dad came home from work. At four o’clock every day, after I’d been home from school a while, Mum would disappear upstairs dressed as Mrs. Mop and reappear at quarter to five in one of her long flowing dresses, full makeup, and heels, her hair brushed out from spending a day under a head scarf.

Mum was really into the Mamas and the Papas, and during the summer holidays while Dad was at work, and once the house was straight and she’d “done through” as she called it, we’d dance to her twelve-inch records in the living room. She would come in from hanging out the washing in the back garden and say, “A good day for drying. If they’re done in time and I’m all done through, we can have a little dance with my records.”

One afternoon while Mum was upstairs making herself look nice for Dad, I grabbed one of her dresses and climbed into it, ready for our dance.

Mum walked into the living room as I held the Mamas and the Papas album, wearing her size-twenty dress covered in bright-pink daisies, a wide grin filling my face.

She took the record off me. “What you doing in my dress, love?”

“I like the flowers and I want to see what it feels like when I dance around in it, like you do.” Perfectly reasonable as far as I was concerned.

“They’re for me, not for you, love.” She put the record on and turned to me, her hands on her hips. “Take it off and we can have a dance together.”

But I didn’t want to take it off. I wanted to keep it on with my whole being. As I swayed from side to side, brushing the dress between my hands as I swung my arms around, I felt so right I couldn’t understand why I had to take it off.

“I’ll be careful. I won’t make it dirty.” Dirty was the worst thing in that house as far as Mum was concerned, and I knew I wouldn’t do that to the dress.

As the music filled the room, Mum knelt in front of me. “One dance. But it’s our little secret. Don’t tell Daddy, all right?” She made a zipping motion with her hand across her lips.

I nodded emphatically and started to dance with her to the music. It was the one that made me dance the most on the whole album, it was “One Way Ticket.” It all felt perfect: the swishing sound of the dress as it moved around me, the feeling of the gap between my bare legs, and how different it was from wearing trousers.

As I danced, I caught a glimpse of myself, stood in my mum’s frock, smiling as I jumped about.

The song finished, and Mum lifted the needle on the record player and told me to take off the dress.

There was a bit of a disagreement as I begged for one more song, held up my He-Man figure and said, “I want to dance for him.”

“You like He-Man, do you, love?”

I nodded and Mum kept looking at her watch. In the end, she unzipped the dress behind my back and lifted me out of it. As the dress lay on the ground, pooled around my feet, the back door clicked, signalling Dad’s return from work. Mum scooped up the dress and folded it quickly into the ironing pile in the living room, then greeted Dad, in his grey suit carrying a black briefcase, with a hug and a kiss.

“What’s for dinner?” Dad asked over Mum’s shoulder, staring at me.

I was still moving a bit to the song continuing to play in my head.

“What’s he dancing about for? Why’s he not got any clothes on? Hasn’t he got something useful to do, like lay the table?”

Mum pulled back from the hug and told me to throw on some clothes, and then asked me to lay the table as dinner would be five minutes. Raising her eyebrows towards me, she said, “Fish fingers, peas, and chips. Your favourite.”

I ran upstairs to dress, nipping in ahead of Dad. Once we had both changed, we made our way downstairs again. Mum beamed at my dad, who was now wearing a shapeless grey tracksuit he’d bought from a catalogue when Mum had complained his old tracksuit had too many holes to be darned anymore.

We continued with our little secret most evenings. Sometimes, I would watch Mum putting on her makeup from their bed and I’d ask what each item was for as she applied them.

“Can I have a go?” I asked once got the courage.

She turned, half her lips bright red, the lipstick in her hand. “Not on you. You can do it on me if you want.” She handed it to me. As I applied it to her lips, I had to force my whole body not to put a bit on my own.

“How does it come off?” I asked innocently.

She showed me the makeup remover in the jar on her dressing table and the cotton wool in the drawer.

Now I knew everything I needed to know.

When Mum was hanging out the washing or deeply involved in dinner preparation, I would take some of Mum’s makeup into the bathroom and make up my whole face and then stare at myself in the mirror, amazed at how I no longer looked like me. Afterwards, I’d dutifully remove it all with the bottle and cotton wool just as Mum had done.

That Christmas, Mum opened her present from Dad: a pair of shiny black high-heeled shoes. The toes went to a sharp point and the heel was longer than my index finger. She tried them on, parading around the room and twirling her feet at every turn.

I looked at the Meccano tractor set I’d just opened and my heart sank. Why didn’t I have a little sister so I could play Barbie dolls with her as I was growing up? I’d seen these dolls in their bright-pink boxes and blonde hair next to the muddy-grey Action Man in the toy shop. When I’d asked for one of those, Dad had said not to be so silly. I wanted an Action Man, didn’t I?

Now, Dad said, “Shall we build the tractor?”

Desperate for something to have in common with Dad, I nodded, opened the box, and cleared a space on the living room carpet. Soon the tractor was built, with its red shiny three-inch wheels, bent tube of a body, and frame around the seat where my old Action Man could sit—if I could have found him. I’d just handed Dad bits and pieces, watching him build it. It was the most we’d talked to each other in years.

After everyone went to bed that night, I sneaked into the living room, pushed my tractor aside, put on Mum’s shiny black high heels, and walked around the kitchen, enjoying every quiet tap they made on the floor. After I’d had my fill, I put them back where they’d been left and went to bed.

Maybe that’s what makes Damien run through the forest on a full moon night, trying to escape what awaits him at the McKenzies. He wants to lose himself in the green and the silver, disappear into the black. Instead, he’s found.

The Salgados welcome Damien in a way he never would have expected. Damien and Hakan grow closer, first into friendship, and then into something heated and breathless as they end up in the same university together. But, Damien knows, deep down in that bruised and mealy part of his core, that he’s not good enough to be part of their family. He’s not worthy of calling Hakan his home.

Damien is used to losing things, but he’ll hold onto this for as long as he can.

Review: Exercising Restraint (Different Dynamics #2) by Tamir Drake

Pierce may have a crush on Steve, his sweet, funny personal trainer, but he doesn’t plan to act on it. They have a great relationship in the gym but are also friends outside of it, and Pierce has no intention of jeopardizing that. Besides, he may be an omega, but he’s got a good handle on his body’s biology. He’s not worried he’ll accidentally take things too far.

Steve may have a crush on Pierce, his smart and incredibly hot client, but he’s definitely not planning to say anything anytime soon. Pierce can do way better than Steve, and anyway, Pierce is a pretty casual dater. What Steve wants is anything but casual. And that’s not just the alpha in him.

When Pierce goes to Steve’s gym one snowy afternoon to work out, he thinks nothing of the fact that he’s in heat. He’s taken his libido inhibitor and is wearing his odor blocker, so there’s no chance of bothering Steve. Except, then the blocker wears off.

Steve wants nothing more than to keep himself under control, keep himself from doing something Pierce might not want. But Pierce might have something else in mind…

Not necessarily a direct sequel, this is in the same ABO world and briefly features Richard and James from Different Dynamics.

This was an enjoyable, simple, friends to lovers romance where both Pierce and Steve think the other isn’t interested, and neither is brave enough to rock the boat, wanting to preserve their client/trainer relationship by keeping things strictly professional.

However, a fortuitous terrible storm happens, forcing Pierce and Steve into tight quarters just as Pierce starts his heat. Will these two be able to keep the ruse of hiding their feelings from each other or will base urges win out?

Well, of course base urges triumph, but this definitely had more feels and romance than the first book which will surely please many. It also had a slight twist on the ABO characteristics featured, where alpha Steve is the one who loses control a bit and it’s omega Pierce who has to rein him in.

Overall, an easy sexy short with a nice touch of KNOTTING, where always more *wink* would’ve been much appreciated!

Author Interview: CM Peters

When did you know you wanted to write, and when did you discover that you were good at it?
I started writing fanfiction in my teenage years, but I didn’t know it was fanfiction (The Crow, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Don Juan De Marco). All I wanted to do was insert myself in my favorite movies. I took a looooong break and came back to writing four and half years ago. When did I discover I was good? Honestly, I still have the impostor syndrome and always feel odd when I’m told something I wrote was good.

How would you describe your writing style/genre?
All over the place. I have ideas for a crime novel, suspense, fantasy, another romance, historical/fantasy, erotica. I write what inspires me.

What do you do when you get writer’s block?

Freak out? Run around in the street screaming? I usually try to let go, do something else, but I get quite frustrated with it, and for me, frustration = anger in that case.

Do you use a pseudonym? If so, why?
I do. CM Peters is my pseudonym mainly because my real surname is French and most anglophones massacre it when they pronounce it.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?
The first three took 3-4 months each. My latest took eight months since I had to put it away for a while. It all really depends on when I can write (I work full-time) and how it all flows.

What do you do if you get a brilliant idea at a bad time?
I have a waterproof notepad in the shower. If in bed/at night, I dictate something to my phone. Or I grab a piece of paper to scribble things down.

Are you a full-time or part-time writer? How does that affect your writing?
I’m a part-time writer. It affects my writing and not because I try to steal some time at work during slower hours or breaks to write a bit. If not, I make it up on weekends.

Are you a plotter or a pantster?
PLOT PLOT PLOT! Oh, gawd, I’m annoying with that and keep adding to it until I realize my book would end up having 50 chapters.

Do your books spring to life from a character first or an idea?
Usually, an idea. But sometimes, I ‘see’ a character and build a story around him/her.

What is the most heartfelt thing a reader has said to you?
That I saved her life with one of my stories. It’s hard to describe what it did to me but I’m glad she’s still alive.

What was one of the most surprising things you’ve learned in writing your books? I love writing dialogue. I make myself laugh with those parts.

Where do you like to write? Anywhere I can. For some reason, I get really inspired in waiting rooms! o_0

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A nurse (changed my mind when I saw guts), a writer, a translator (too lazy to learn more languages), a writer, a radio jockey, and finally, an actress.

If you had the opportunity to live one year of your life over again, which year would you choose, and why?
August 2001 to May 2002. My last school year in college. Had a blast, met wonderful people, and made longlife connections.

Tell me one thing hardly anyone knows about you.
I still dream of being an actress.

Tell me about a unique or quirky habit of yours.
Even if I’m alone in my car while driving and go over a bump that makes me flop back on my seat, I shout ‘wooo!’. Yeah, I’m weird.

Were you a voracious reader as a child?
Some children are put in the corner because they’ve been bad. I was put in the corner with books because I did my schoolwork too fast in class. From then on, devoured anything I could.

What pets are currently on your keyboard, and what are their names? Pictures?
Sharpe and Loki, shelter cats, they drive me nuts but I love them.

What was the first book that made you cry?
Marie-Tempête by Dominique Demers, read in my teenage years. The story is about a teenager getting pregnant at the worst time possible and her wading through it all. The birthing scene made me bawl in class.

What other artistic pursuits (it any) do you indulge in apart from writing? Competitive cat brushing, looming, karaoke

What do you like to read in your free time?
These days, autobiographies.

If you could create a new holiday, what would it be?
Writers week. One full week off every month to write without anything else to do.

If you were stuck on a desert island all alone with only three things, what would they be?
Toilet paper (cause really, leaves??), an endless supply of notebooks, Tom Hiddleston. No, he’s not a thing. Okay, chocolate.

What fantasy realm would you choose to live in and why?
The Marvel universe for the win!

Would you visit the future or the past, and why?
The past, to have time to learn more, read more, love more. Why know the future? So you can stress about it?

How does the world end?
In bed with a good book.

Star Trek or Star Wars? Why?
Star Trek for Benedict Cumberbatch’s Khan and Star Wars for Princess Leia.

Summer Fair meme

From All the World by Marie Piper
She decided to do something bold. “Come up in the wheel with me.”

“I’ve been up in the wheel,” but Cathleen didn’t say no. “You don’t have to buy me a ticket.”

“But I want to,” Anna said. “I want to go up there with you. The line is long. It may be the last thing I get to do today, and though I’m terrified I can’t pass up the chance to do something that is once-in-a-lifetime.”

“No, I imagine you can’t.” Wiping her face, Cathleen finished her hot dog. Anna did the same, and they returned their glasses to the Pabst booth and then got into the long line for the wheel. Children bounced in line, excited to go up but bored with waiting. Men smoked and sent the wafts of smoke across all the people in line, and more than one person looked nervous about going into the sky in the steel contraption.

Anna and Cathleen bought tickets and, by virtue of space, were shoved together as they shuffled slowly to the front.

“Mercy, but it’s high.” Anna felt as if she might be sick.

“You don’t have to do it, you know.”

“But I’ve already bought a ticket.”

“Someone’d pay you for it.”

“But I’ve come all this way and I’m here standing underneath it. Besides, what’ll I do if I don’t—go look at the Fisheries?”

She felt a warm hand take hers and nearly fainted. Cathleen had taken her hand. “Don’t be afraid. It’s fun. It really is.”

“Thank you.”

“And if it collapses and we die, at least we’ll die together.”

Anna groaned but did not take her hand away. Hand in hand, they reached the front of the line and waited with a group of thirty others for the next car to come down and to board. Cathleen pulled them to a windowed corner where they could both press against the glass.

Still, they held hands.

And when the car started to move, Anna squeezed hard from nerves without thinking. Cathleen ducked her head in and put her lips to Anna’s. It was brief, just a momentary touch, but then she whispered into Anna’s ear. “Don’t be afraid.”

Anna wasn’t. Cathleen’s lips against hers had taken away all the fear she had felt about the Ferris Wheel, and then some. With Cathleen beside her, their fingers entwined, she rode the car that rose into the air and beheld the entire fair in all directions before her. She saw the Coliseum of the Wild West show, and the balloon in the sky, and all the trains, and all the people, and all the way back to the basin where she’d first entered the fair off the Lake. The sun was just beginning to go down in the sky. Soon, it would be evening, and Anna would need to get on her way—but with the incredible views and the hand of the lovely girl in hers, and Anna’s heart swelled about to bursting. She could have wept at it all, at this perfect day.

The car started to descent.

“We get one more loop,” Cathleen said.

“I wish it was a hundred,” Anna replied, turning to her friend. “I wish we could stay here forever.” It was an honest confession.

Cathleen smiled, but sadly. With the displays below, Anna felt as if she could see all the world ahead of her. And all the world seemed so small and unimportant.

Tag Team Review: Tight Quarters (Out of Uniform #6) by Annabeth Albert

Petty Officer Bacon, a navy SEAL and ace sharpshooter, has been on the front lines of more than his fair share of dangerous ops. Yet when a minor injury relegates him to the beta team, he’s tasked with what may be his riskiest assignment yet: the silver fox journalist he’s babysitting is the hottest, most charismatic man he’s ever encountered.

Award-winning journalist Spencer Bryant may have been named one of Pride magazine’s most eligible bachelors of the year, but he’s not looking to change his relationship status. He’s a consummate professional who won’t risk his ethics or impeccable reputation by getting involved with a source. Even a sexy-as-hell military man. But while Spencer can resist his physical attraction to Bacon, he has less control over his emotions—especially when the mission goes sideways and the two men are trapped alone.

Getting out of the jungle alive turns out to be easy compared to facing the truth about their feelings for one another back in the real world. And whether or not they can build a future is a different story altogether.

Adam - 4 Hearts

Bacon’s a dedicated SEAL. He doesn’t let anything get in the way of his job, and he’s highly loyal to his team. But he also has a secret that few people know - Bacon is pansexual. He doesn’t expect to come out to his team, unless he falls for a man.

I’ve wanted to read Bacon’s story for a while now. It didn’t take me long to develop a major crush on Bacon. He’s the total package - strong, driven, and he’s got heart in spades. Plus, the killer bod doesn’t hurt either.

Spencer Bryant is an award-winning journalist who’s shadowing Bacon’s team. Spencer’s married to his career and has a rigid sense of ethics. But from the moment he meets Bacon, Spencer can’t help but be drawn to the man.

The two men don’t get off to a great start. Bacon ends up on babysitting duty, keeping Spencer out of harm’s way. Bacon would rather be in the midst of the action, and Spencer doesn’t like being treated like a burden.

However, underneath the snark there’s an undeniable simmering tension. Spencer and Bacon manage to keep their hands to themselves, but it’s only a matter of time before they give in.

When the mission goes awry, Bacon finds himself turning to Spencer for comfort. The two men go at each other with no holds barred. This is one sexy read!

And it’s not just the physical chemistry that’s obvious to the two men. At some point during the mission, their rocky start turned to mutual respect.

Bacon finds himself opening up to Spencer about his past in a way he’s never done before, and Spencer begins thinking about a life that includes more than just his pen and laptop.

I loved seeing the two men let their guard down. It doesn’t take long for their weekends together to become the most important parts of their lives.

The big stumbling block on Spencer and Bacon’s road to a happy ever after is a book that Spencer wants to write about the military, which Bacon isn’t on board with. I’ve got mixed feelings about the whole thing, and neither man handled the situation that well.

But I was really happy with how everything was resolved, and that Bacon and Spencer get the perfect happy ever ending!

Overall, this was a really good addition to the Out of Uniforms series!

SheReadsALot - 4 Hearts

Tight Quarters is another solid addition to the Out of Uniform series.

This certainly can be read as a standalone, but it features couples (briefly) from Wheels Up and Squared Away.  Pansexual Petty Officer Bacon (Bacon's first name finally revealed inside) has been a solid side character. I was a little unsure how I'd feel about Bacon getting a starring role. But I shouldn't be surprised, this author gave him an interesting enough back story and a solid romance to boot.

Ginger haired Bacon is 28 years old and enjoys being a 'lifer'. Granted, everyone around seems to be coupled up. He hasn't even come out to his team other than a trusted friend. But he's satisfied...enough. He's dedicated to his SEAL career. And to his dismay, he's assigned to watch over a journalist embedded with his SEAL team. And it's the last thing he needs. Especially since he's a fan of the handsome silver haired out 43 year old author, Spencer Bryant. Bacon isn't sure Spencer will make any new fans with his team since there are a few homophobes on his team.

Spencer and Bacon do start off a little rough. Bacon just thinks the out and proud journalist is going to dig into everyone's business. It takes a mission for the two to form a bond and mutual understanding after sharing their pasts. The sexual chemistry was palpable.

Bacon and Spencer try to deny themselves, especially since Spencer would never start a personal relationship with a source. Once Spencer is off from being embedded with the SEAL team, the two start something that became bigger than they ever expected.

I like Spencer for Bacon a lot. He knew how to read his desires and was just about perfect as his match. The way how they dived into feelings...I'm mostly on board with it. The further I read along, the more favorable I became to the two being a couple.

The author added tidbits of daily life to help move the plot along. It was an easy read. There was a good amount of sex as well: big guy bottoming, rimming and dirty talk.

The two struggle with career choices as Spencer plans on writing book that focuses on the military. But as per usual with this author, the two figure it out with a satisfying HEA.

The last chapter was my favorite.

Sexy, sweet story with a some mission action and solid leads. It's not my favorite from the series but I'd recommend to readers who enjoy age gaps, sexual tension that goes somewhere and a couple that learns the importance of communication.

There’s only one problem—Flynn’s actually quite a good boyfriend, and now Nathan’s wondering if getting off the sofa occasionally is really the worst thing in the world.

Thanks so much for having me! Wanted-Bad Boyfriend is a contemporary M/M romance set on Ceremony, a small, English island that’s made romance into a cottage industry. Of course, the other thing that small island communities excel at is gossip...and Ceremony is no different. Especially when they have such fertile fodder as Nate and Flynn, the main characters of Wanted-Bad Boyfriend.

The Hotel

It was nearly dusk by the time Terry Carroll reached the Granshire Hotel in his rattly old pick-up. He’d made this trip once a fortnight for the last five years, but he still held his breath as he coasted under the low arch of stonework. The worn, grey slabs just cleared the top of his cab -- just like it always did -- and he rolled into the small, cobbled courtyard.
He parked in front of the old servant’s entrance -- the flagstones worn shiny and dipped from years of use -- and honked the horn once. While he waited for the bar staff to come out he scribbled the date and time on the delivery invoice.
The crack of a hand on the side of the car made Terry jump and look up. He squinted through the grubby windshield into the wide, white grin of Nat, the young assistant bar tended. And Terry’s nephew.
“You won’t believe who was here the other night,” Nat chattered as Terry hopped out of the driver’s seat. “Flynn Delaney.”
“Someone’s car break down?” Terry held out the clipboard, and groaned when Nat scribbled his name without reading it. “Don’t sign anything until you’ve checked the delivery, Nat.”
Nat scratched the red piercing in his eyebrow and Terry tried to pretend he’d not noticed that.
“I trust you, Uncle Terry,” he said cheerfully. “No, looked like a date or something. The boss was in a foul mood all night.”
“Yeah,” Terry said. “He would be.”
He went around the back of the pick-up and unloaded a crate of freshly bottled and labelled beer. The glass rattled and clinked as he shoved it towards Nat, who took it but didn’t go anywhere.
“So what’s the story there?” Nat asked as he propped the crate on his hip. “You were mates with Delaney right, before he left the island.”
“I knew him. We weren’t friends,” Terry said. He grabbed the second crate and gave Nate’s foot a kick to make him move. “Your Grandad would have tanned my hide if he found out I was hanging out with Flynn Delaney.”
“Grandad?” Nat said sceptically.
Nat’d met the old man after he’d mellowed, found sobriety, and lost the angry God he used to believe in. It had been easier to like Terry’s Dad then.
“He was trouble. Flynn, not your grandad,” Terry said as they picked their way over the damp cobbles. “Always in hot water over something or the other. Never did the right thing when he could do the wrong ‘un.”
Nat gave a low, wicked chuckle. “Sounds like fun.” He turned to put his shoulders to the heavy door back into the bar. “So what is between him and Max?”
Maybe, these days, Terry had more sympathy for his Dad than he used to. He remembered when he’d thought Flynn was someone to follow, when the bruised knuckles and hangovers had looked cool. Part of him still did. Not the part that was a doting uncle, though.
“Rumour has it that him and Max had a thing back then,” he said. Guilt pricked him for giving weight to that old gossip, but… “Max was 15. Then Flynn pissed off on the ferry, never gave back.”

Review: The Perfect Whore (Storm and Lightning #1) by Josephine Myles

Being the object of everyone’s sexual fantasies ain’t all it’s cracked up to be…

On a mining colony planet a long way from Earth, bandit Jedd Lightning dreams of making enough money to get his ship spaceworthy again. During a robbery at a high-class brothel, he meets gorgeous alien rentboy Storm and is instantly smitten—but the heist goes south and Jedd has to high-tail it out of there with only half the loot.

Enslaved by a fierce Madam, Storm’s shapeshifting talents make him the most sought after whore on Talmak. He literally can’t stop himself becoming his client’s fantasy lover. Sick of enforced transformations, he wants to escape, but he’s closely guarded and has no experience of the unfamiliar city outside the brothel.

Storm is willing—and eager—to do anything to persuade Jedd to break him out of his gilded prison. Lucky for him the arrogant outlaw needs Storm’s help to free his crewmate, held as hostage by a vicious mob boss who wants Jedd to complete the theft he was hired for. Storm keeps blowing away Jedd’s expectations—but with both the law and the mob against them, they could end up with nowhere left to run.

Well, this was a super fun, slightly campy, space jam of action-y goodness! I had a great time getting lost in the adventure and the world the author built. It’s an interesting premise that has a lot of room for growth and I’m hoping the niggles I have about the depth of a few plot points in The Perfect Whore will be expanded upon in future books in the series.

I’ve been a huge fan of Josephine Myles since I read First Impressions many moons ago and I’ve gotten so much more out of every book of hers than I expected. There’s generally a lot more to unpack in her stories than just the romance between the two (or three) MC’s. There’s a lot of self discovery that happens that makes her characters so fully fleshed out and satisfying to read.

The Perfect Whore is very different from past books of hers that I’ve read and I enjoyed the departure very much. And here comes my but, but, I did feel like I was missing the depth that I’ve gotten used to with the author’s other characters and while that may not be fair to The Perfect Whore to compare that way, I couldn’t help myself now and again. That’s why I say I hope that the depth will come in future installments.

What I do know of Jedd and Storm I like very much. There is so much more I want to know about them both and at by the end I felt like I had just scratched the surface.

Jedd is more loyal and upstanding than he wants to let on and his bad boy smuggler/thief persona fits well with the genre. I felt like he was a character sketched out rather than fully fleshed out and that there is more to be had from him. I know I feel that way because of the comparing thing and I’m possibly being unfair to what this story is meant to be, but I can’t help but want more from him and if following stories give me that I will be thrilled!

Storm is an amazing character. He’s a shape shifter that conforms to his client’s fantasies and the transformations are mostly out of his control. It makes him, literally, the perfect whore and an incredibly sympathetic being. He’s sexually empathic so he has just about as much fun as his clients do, but in the end it’s a lonely and sad life he leads at the brothel. It’s dangerous for him to be out in public and he’s way too valuable for the brothel to ever consider letting him go.

Jedd and Storm have an unexplainable connection. The shape shifting is there and the undeniable attraction is the same as with anyone else for Storm, but there is definitely something more. The shape Storm takes with Jedd is the closest to what he remembers his true self to be. He’s intrigued (as was I) as to what that might mean. Storm’s gotten a hint that some of his people may be out there, as in the “out there” of space, and I can’t wait to see where this goes and what it means for Jedd and Storm.

The story ends with an optimistic HFN, which is great, but there is soooooo much more to learn and this can continue on as a sexy and sassy fun space adventure or it can go a little further into the dynamics of Jedd and Storm. What is Jedd’s story, what’s he all about, how did he get here? I don’t even know where to start with Storm. Who is he, where are the rest of his people, can he ever be himself and exactly what does that mean? Regardless of which way the story progresses, I’m going to be reading it.

Review: Under the Midnight Sun by Lore Graham

The eldest son of Thunderhill's warrior-kings, Otto Johanson lives for battle but has forsaken love since the death of his partner three years ago. Still when the Midsummer festivities bring nomadic reindeer herders back to town, Otto can't help but notice the handsome, if sullen, Lukas.

Tension rises between them during the annual tournament, but when a terrible attack devastates Thunderhill, Otto and Lukas must put aside their burgeoning rivalry to embark on a dangerous quest that may be the town's only hope of survival.

Truly a well thought out novella bridging history, fantasy, and magic!

If you like the show Vikings, then I don’t think there will be any problem gobbling this up. Who can say no to a Ragnar-like character who’s a heartbroken warrior prince that doesn’t want to write off love but is still grieving? Not me!

Otto is well respected and next in line to the throne of his clan, and for every Midsummer, their nomad allies join them in celebration and friendly competition to show off their prowess and various skills for bragging rights. When Otto spots newcomer Lukas, he doesn’t quite know what to think of the surly warrior, and these two clash immediately. However, the festivities are cut short when they’re attacked by the fierce magical fiend Ursa Magnus (yes, it’s basically a giant blood thirsty bear) and Otto knows he must hunt it down and kill it instead of waiting for the beast to return to wreck even greater havoc.

Thus the mission begins as Otto, along with clan sorcerers and volunteer warriors (including Lukas), set off in search of the terrible creature. Slowly, Otto and Lukas get to know each other better and a burgeoning respect starts to grow between them as they face difficult challenges and sad sacrifices. These men are hardened, they know loss and death and pain, yet bravely forge on to live only to fight another day. Survival of the fittest is the ultimate at play here so it would also behoove them to act on their feelings and grab what little happiness and warmth they can glean from a world hell bent on testing their mortality from every angle.

Why this garners such a high rating is because my interest never flagged, and I loved this story’s setting of harsh survival in a Nordic context. This was fast paced blending an impossible quest and how two men, who definitely got off on the wrong foot, slowly open their hearts up to each other - all the while bringing the action, hurt comfort, and the sexy with a very satisfying conclusion. Well done Lore Graham. This was a wonderful win!
