Falling in love is hard at any age
…Especially if you happen to be a 115 year old vampire. Thaddeus Dupont was born in 1900, and for the first fourteen years of his life, he lived in a cabin on the Amite River in Louisiana. He grew up steeped in the legends of the bayou, the feu follet, the loup garou and rougarou, and the traiteurs. He learned to hunt and to fish, to tie nets, to dress game; all the skills he needed for survival.
When he was old enough, he was sent to St. Joseph’s Abbey to study for the priesthood. Though his mother claimed she didn’t have a favorite son, she recognized Thaddeus’s gift, and knew the Church would be the best place to nurture him.
For Thaddeus, the Church provided an answer to a much more disturbing problem. From a very young age, he’d recognized the inherent depravity in his most basic impulses. He desired other men in an unnatural way, but the discipline imposed by monastic life gave him the tools he needed to suppress those desires. He vowed to join the order as soon as he was deemed ready.
And then he ran across a vampire.
Awakening to his new life, at first he responded by indulging in every imaginable sin, deciding if he was going to burn in Hell, he may as well enjoy the trip. That period of debauchery lasted about ten years, until he was recruited by the White Monks, a demon-fighting branch of the Dominican order. Again, the discipline of the Church saved him, although he was left alone, isolated, a reclusive soul who filled his time with prayer.
And then…he met Sarasija Mishra.
Heat and honey. Crimson and coal. A haze of color and sound. The man—for it was a man—stood on the porch as if he had every right to be there. As if I didn’t care he’d interrupted Vespers, the evening chant that allowed me to greet him without breaking his foolish neck. As if I’d expected to find him, tall and proud and soft as a yearling buck.
I had no such expectation, and he had no right, and only the luck of the innocent kept me from breaking his neck on principle.
Sara is nothing like Thaddeus. He is young and well-educated, with a 21st century disregard for most things having to do with religion. He’s also out and proud, and has never been made to feel his sexuality is a problem. How these two find their way – while battling demons, both inner and the other kind – was a lot of fun to write, and hopefully it’ll be fun for you to read.
Vespers is the first story Irene and I have co-written, and as much as we’ve loved working on it, we’re that much happier to be sharing it with you. Keep reading for an excerpt, and make sure you enter our giveaway for a $25 gift card plus 7 (SEVEN!) paranormal romance ebooks, by authors like Alexis Hall, Jordan Castillo Price, and Claire Cray. It’s a great prize, and hopefully you’ll be the winner!

Vespers Blurb

Thaddeus Dupont has had over eighty years to forget…

The vampire spends his nights chanting the Liturgy of the Hours and ruthlessly disciplines those unnatural urges he’s vowed never again to indulge. He is at the command of the White Monks, who summon him at will to destroy demons. In return, the monks provide for his sustenance and promise the return of his immortal soul.

Sarasija Mishra’s most compelling job qualification might be his type O blood…

The 22-year-old college grad just moved across the country to work for some recluse he can’t even find on the internet. Sounds sketchy, but the salary is awesome and he can’t afford to be picky.  On arrival he discovers a few details his contract neglected to mention, like the alligator-infested swamp, the demon attacks, and the nature of his employer’s “special diet”. A smart guy would leave, but after one look into Dupont’s mesmerizing eyes, Sarasija can’t seem to walk away. Too bad his boss expected “Sara” to be a girl.

Falling in love is hard at any age…

The vampire can’t fight his hungers forever, especially since Sara’s brought him light, laughter and a very masculine heat. After yielding to temptation, Thaddeus must make a choice.  Killing demons may save his soul, but keeping the faith will cost him his heart.

Vespers is a complete novel with no cliffhanger. It can be enjoyed as a standalone or read as the first book in the Hours of the Night series.

About Liv Rancourt
I write romance: m/f, m/m, and v/h, where the h is for human and the v is for vampire … or sometimes demon … I lean more towards funny than angst. When I’m not writing I take care of tiny premature babies or teenagers, depending on whether I’m at home or at work. My husband is a soul of patience, my dog’s cuteness is legendary, and we share the homestead with three ferrets. Who steal things. Because they’re brats.

Perversion. The word warred for attention with the sight of the scars. How hurt did a vampire have to be before he didn’t heal completely? Then the pressure of Dupont’s mouth on his overrode both thoughts. Sara opened his mouth and sighed as Dupont’s tongue took possession. He could worry later. They were both alive now. Better than alive.
He angled his head and arched into Dupont. He hadn’t expected the shrimp discussion to yield such immediate results. Or maybe, as usual, he had no idea what was going on inside Dupont’s head. Having an intermittent live feed on the man’s emotions was less helpful than one might think, especially since Sara still hadn’t gotten a firm handle on which of them was broadcasting what at any given time.
He kept his eyes closed, avoiding Dupont’s gaze. He slid their tongues together, trying to remember why he had been worried about coming in here. They hadn’t talked about sleeping arrangements. The door hadn’t been locked, though. And after yesterday…
Dupont shifted his hips so more than their tongues could get friendly.
Talking could wait. When he had climbed into bed with Dupont, he had stupidly left on his boxers, and now they were hindering full appreciation of the moment.
And maybe they were on the same wavelength right now. Dupont had his thumbs under the waistband, and Sara lifted his hips and squirmed out. Dupont pushed them aside so they were skin to skin. Sara ran his hands along the vampire’s arms, over his back, into his hair.
He would never mistake the feel of the man in his arms for anyone else. Dupont’s body, not yet warm after his day sleep, slid along his like cool satin. Shouldn’t be a turn-on. But should had nothing to do with it. Sara’s skin burned in all the places they touched. He wrapped his legs around Dupont and held him closer, more than willing to warm him up.
The arms around him tightened. Vampire arms, strong enough to crush the life from his body. Their hold was reverent, as if he were something precious. Dupont’s mouth left his to trail kisses over his cheek, his temples, his eyes, each touch a tiny benediction. Cool kisses on burning skin. He didn’t need or deserve adoration. He was only a man who wanted a man—not the vampire or the monk, but the man at the heart of them both.
As if reading his thoughts, a cool hand cupped his hip, then slid around his thigh, lighting fires in its wake until he burned with need. Dupont’s finger circled his hole and ripped away the last of his restraint. He moaned, aware of two things. They weren’t nearly close enough, and he was going to combust when Dupont got inside him. He pulled his legs in closer to his chest and bucked against Dupont, hoping to inspire some urgency.
Dupont took his time, as focused and deliberate in this as in everything else. His kisses wandered lower, grazing along Sara’s jaw, nipping at his ear, sucking on his neck.
Sara angled his head to offer better access. Finally. The biting had been amazing. They could do that again, no problem. Instead, Dupont moved lower, sucking on Sara’s nipples and sending zaps of sensation straight to his dick, maddeningly trapped between their bodies.
It seemed he’d spent an eternity in a haze of need before Dupont was poised over him again.
Then, without warning, everything went sideways.
“Tell me to stop.”
The words didn’t make any sense, but the stillness in Dupont’s body did.
Sara’s eyes flew open, meeting Dupont’s. The conduit opened, and he fell into the storm.
“Tell me to stop.” Far away, the words came again, whispering through the power of the vampire’s gaze.
Sara stared at Dupont, angry he would use his power now. Like the leaking emotions, Sara had never figured out why the whammy worked sometimes and not others, but he doubted he could resist a determined effort when they were this connected. He gathered his own will anyway, ready to fight the command…until he realized he didn’t have to. They were just words. Weak, insubstantial words, struggling to find their way through the waves of need cresting on the real power. He smiled. “Not a chance in hell.”
Dupont’s eyes closed. Breathing heavily, he rested his forehead against Sara’s. “I am unprepared, and I would not hurt you more than I can help. Let this be our salv—”
“Nah,” Sara managed. He tried for cool, but his voice came out so breathy, he’d have to rely on Dupont’s supernatural hearing. “I was a Boy Scout.”
He reached back awkwardly and fumbled on the table next to the bed. The shorts had been a cop-out, but he hadn’t been stupid enough to come into this bare little room again without lube.
Dupont seemed like he still might be gearing up for second thoughts. Sara wrapped his arms around him and rolled. Coming to his knees over Dupont, he flipped open the bottle and slicked up his fingers. When he met Dupont’s eyes, a big wave of shy hit him. Lots of guys got off on watching their partner prepare themselves. Of course, lots of guys weren’t hundred-year-old monks. He bit his lip, still committed, yet suddenly too self-conscious to reach around and oil his own ass. But, hey, with the beauty of lube, application wasn’t specific to Slot A or Tab B. He scooted backward until he straddled Dupont’s thighs instead of his hips.
Dupont didn’t make any move of encouragement, lying vampire-still beneath him. Stubborn as usual. Iron will sounded hot in genre fiction but was a pain in the ass in real life.
It wasn’t as if Dupont wasn’t turned on, too. Evidence to the contrary bobbed between them, daring Sara to test Dupont’s resolve.
Dupont himself looked hot as hell, laid out naked on the narrow-ass bed under Sara. His skin was moonlight and shadow, a Frenchman’s version of vampire pale. His lips were swollen from their kisses, and a dark flush stained his cheeks.
He looked carnal, and wicked, and nothing like a man too holy to fuck. Despite the stillness of his body, lightning still sparked in his inhuman eyes. Sara met his gaze deliberately as his hand took Dupont’s shaft in a firm, sure downstroke.
Merde.” Dupont arched off the bed.
Oh God, so hot. The power to make Dupont respond, the look on his face…
He slicked his thumb across the head of Dupont’s cock, and Dupont clutched at the sheets. Iron will. Sara grinned. If Dupont tried to whammy him now, he bet it wouldn’t be to make him stop.
Before he could finish the thought, Dupont’s hands were on his arms, pulling him roughly forward. He forgot about whammies and iron will as their mouths met again. Kisses, even Dupont’s, weren’t enough now. He could feel what they both needed behind him, hard and slick and already so close. A little help would be nice, but not necessary. Dupont didn’t need to stress himself, Sara could take care of this for them both. He adjusted his body and impaled himself on Dupont.
The universe went still for one white-hot second. Dupont’s eyes were wide, startled, then the lightning struck.
Combustion.
Dupont was everywhere, between his thighs, in his body, in his head. He was open, invaded, possessed. Hands on his hips set the rhythm, as Dupont drove into him. Concepts of his and mine became meaningless. There was no separation. No Sara. No Dupont. Only the storm, building to an inevitable peak.
They had moved. Sara couldn’t tell how, only that somehow they still had one more barrier to breach. Lips grazed his neck. A final penetration, then even their hearts beat as one. Their shared pulse pounded through him. His body erupted in starbursts and lightning. And his soul found…communion.

GIVEAWAY + Blog Tour: Dog Days by T.A. Moore

T.A. Moore and her dystopian wonderland are here to welcome us all with an excerpt from Dog Days!

I suppose it is a bit predictable for a Brit to write a book about weather, but there you go! Dog Days is my first shifter novel and I had a blast writing it. I love the characters, obstreperous little sods though they could be when I needed them to behave, and the setting in Durham is one I have a lot of time for. So, welcome to my dystopian Winter Wonderland, and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it.

And to whet your appetite, here’s a deleted scene that never made it into the final edit of Dog Days.

Blurb

The world ends not with a bang, but with a downpour. Tornadoes spin through the heart of London, New York cooks in a heat wave that melts tarmac, and Russia freezes under an ever-thickening layer of permafrost. People rally at first—organizing aid drops and evacuating populations—but the weather is only getting worse.

In Durham, mild-mannered academic Danny Fennick has battened down to sit out the storm. He grew up in the Scottish Highlands, so he’s seen harsh winters before. Besides, he has an advantage. He’s a werewolf. Or, to be precise, a weredog. Less impressive, but still useful.

Except the other werewolves don’t believe this is any ordinary winter, and they’re coming down over the Wall to mark their new territory. Including Danny’s ex, Jack—the Crown Prince Pup of the Numitor’s pack—and the prince's brother, who wants to kill him.

A wolf winter isn’t white. It’s red as blood.

Excerpt

The rain battered down like gunfire in an American cop show. Puddles lay in glistening sheets across the driveway, reflections shattering as the raindrops bounced. It had been raining for two days, Lee had been dying - full of pus-stench and pain - for two days.

With the moon-itch working under Danny’s skin already, the walls around him felt more like a trap than shelter. He’d abandoned his room entirely - much too close to the smell of something dying badly - and lay on the floor in the kitchen, an old rug protecting his rangy bones from the slate. He was reading the Gods of Olympus for the fifth time. It was soothingly unrelated to his life. For a species that traced itself back to the origins of Rome, the wolves had always taken their religion more from Pict and Viking legends. Probably from spite at Hadrian.

The Greeks didn't have many end of days myths prophecies either. With Jack's 'can't it be the apocalypse AND weather?' argument rolling around his head, Danny could appreciate that.

The stench of pus bloomed in the air. They were changing Lee’s bandages. He’d stopped screaming this morning.

He turned a page and stared at the words, squinting at the type as if that would help. It didn't. Danny couldn't remember a word of the last few pages he'd read. Muttering to himself, he flipped back to the last page that lined up with the words in his head. He was about to start reading again, when the door swung open and the storm blew Jenny in.

She was muddy from her toes to her toes and the cheap plastic slicker someone had - in happier times - brought home from Disney flapped madly around her as she tried to catch the door. Flipping his book over, Danny jumped to his feet and jogged over. He edged around her and threw his shoulder against the door, manhandling it shut. It felt like the wind was pushing it back from the other side.

'Thanks,' she gasped out, doubling over and bracing her hands on her knees. Water dripped from her nose. 'It is horrible out there. I'd thought, I'd hoped, that last week would be the worst of it.'

Danny helped strip her out of the slicker. ‘At least it’s not snowing.’

‘Touch wood,’ Jenny said, tapping her knuckles to her skull. Despite the slicker, she was wet to the skin. Her wan smile faded to nothing and she glanced up at the ceiling. ‘How’s Lee?’

     Dying. Soaking up meds. Stinking.

     ‘Holding on.’

Jenn sighed and nodded.. ‘He’s stubborn.’

      ‘Yeah.’

She glanced at him sidelong, mouth crimping at the corners in a wry smile. ‘Danny.’

He shrugged. ‘I didn’t say anything.’

‘Whatever Lee did, he doesn’t deserve this. no one does.’

‘What he deserves isn’t the point,’ Danny said carefully. ‘What we can take is. He’s not going to get better.’

‘He’s not dead. He deserves the chance to not be dead tomorrow too.’

Danny opened his mouth and stopped himself, scrubbing his hand over his face. He wanted an excuse to get away didn’t he? This was as good a one as any. He didn’t even have to lie.

‘I was thinking of getting away for a few days,’ he said abruptly. ‘Go see Jack, maybe, see how he’s doing.’

She blinked at him, then nodded. There was an unflattering amount of relief on her face. Danny clenched his jaw and tried not to be offended. He couldn’t pinpoint anything in particular that he did, but around the fattened moon people did seem to find him tiring company.

‘Maybe that would be a good idea,’ Jenn said carefully. ‘Give you a bit of breathing room, time off the hot seat. First time I’d seen you joke around in ages was when Jack was here.’

Danny shifted under that thought, uncomfortable with the idea that Jack made him comfortable. Why? Because it was easier to be around a wolf than humans? Because it made him feel better to have the wolf claim dominance? The heat in his face felt like a blush. Danny clenched his jaw, hoped his skin was weathered enough to hide it and pressed on.

‘I’ll only be a few days,’ he said. ‘I don’t want to worry anyhow, so-’
Jenn squinted up at him curiously. ‘There’s no rush, Danny. You sound like you’re about to go running out into the rain.’

     ‘No time like the present.’

Dark eyes went huge and round. ‘Out in that? It’s biblical out there, the rain’s not waiting to come down and there’s the lightning and-’

Maybe it was because the lunar cycle was ruffling his hidden fur, but he let some of the edges sneak out around his usual Labrador geniality.

‘It’ll be better than me sitting it out here,’ he said calmly. ‘If I have to spend another night smelling him rot, I’ll put him out of his misery.’

Surprise took root on Jenn’s face, but after a second of looking at him she nodded. ‘Then go. Just take care.’

Bio:

TA Moore genuinely believed that she was a Cabbage Patch Kid when she was a small child. This was the start of a lifelong attachment to the weird and fantastic. These days she lives in a market town on the Northern Irish coast and her friends have a rule that she can only send them three weird and disturbing links a month (although she still holds that a DIY penis bifurcation guide is interesting, not disturbing). She believes that adding ‘in space!’ to anything makes it at least 40% cooler, will try to pet pretty much any animal she meets (this includes snakes, excludes bugs), and once lied to her friend that she had climbed all the way up to Tintagel Castle in Cornwall, when actually she’d only gotten to the beach, realized it was really high, and chickened out.

She aspires to being a cynical misanthrope, but is unfortunately held back by a sunny disposition and an inability to be mean to strangers. If TA Moore is mean to you, that means you’re friends now.

Release Day Review: Mad Lizard Mambo (Kai Gracen #2) by Rhys Ford

Kai Gracen has no intention of being anyone’s pawn. A pity Fate and SoCalGov have a different opinion on the matter.

Licensed Stalkers make their living hunting down monsters and dangerous criminals… and their lives are usually brief, brutal, and thankless. Despite being elfin and cursed with a nearly immortal lifespan, Kai didn’t expect to be any different. Then Ryder, the High Lord of the Southern Rise Court, arrived in San Diego, Kai’s not-so-mundane life went from mild mayhem to full-throttle chaos.

Now an official liaison between the growing Sidhe Court and the human populace, Kai is at Ryder’s beck and call for anything a High Lord might need a Stalker to do. Unfortunately for Kai, this means chasing down a flimsy rumor about an ancient lost Court somewhere in the Nevada desert—a court with powerful magics that might save Ryder—and Kai’s—people from becoming a bloody memory in their Merged world’s violent history.

The race for the elfin people’s salvation opens unwelcome windows into Kai’s murky past, and it could also slam the door on any future he might have with his own kind and Ryder.

When I finished this book, the latest in the Kai Gracen series, I sat down to write a thoughtful review, letting everyone know in a clear and concise manner just how much I loved it.  It was going to be The Best Review Ever!  It would explain in detail - with bullet points even! - why everyone who hasn’t picked up this series should purchase it now.   I imagined myself looking somewhat like this:

But, in reality, I looked more like this:

When it comes to Kai Gracen, and any of Rhys Ford’s books, I can’t help but squee and do a happy dance.  I haven’t come across a single story she’s written that I haven’t absolutely loved.  Yes, some I’ve loved more than others.  The Kai Gracen series is one of them.  I’ll try my best, between all the squees and fangirling, to explain to you exactly why.

Kai Gracen is back and he’s snarkier than ever.  He’s been contracted by Ryder, the object of his reluctant desires - and the bane of his existence - to find what just may be the answer to the infertility problem that plagues the elfin people.  It will be a harrowing journey, fraught with danger at every turn.  It’s a race to get there before those who wish to see the elfin vanish from existence do.

Road trip!

And what a road trip it is.  Adventure and excitement abound as we travel alongside Kai and his crew to the ruins of Old Vegas and beyond.  Kai faces some seriously terrifying monsters on the road.  The trail is rife with Black Dogs, Nightmares, dragons and murderous humans.  But the most frightening thing he faces, the one that horrifies him out of all, is the monster that lives inside his own soul.

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times, Rhys Ford writes some of the most descriptive and engaging stories I’ve ever read.  She has a knack for pulling you so far into a story that you can actually see and hear and even feel what is going on at every second.

Booms shook the hills a few heartbeats after every flash, the rumbles coming fast and faster as the thunderstorm began to hit its stride. The strikes grew furious, bleaching the sky with each pass and growing stronger until the clouds were spangled with forks. Water rose up from the sides, swamping the transport’s heavy tires, but its weight kept it pressed down into the road. I hit a patch of deep water, a dip in the road filled past its curves, and the truck shimmied back and forth. Fighting the swerve, I battled the rear end, swearing as I threw my weight into turning the steering wheel to bring all eight wheels back onto the asphalt.

“Kai, watch out!” Ryder clutched the dashboard.
“I see it,” I growled, my hands clenched on the shaking steering wheel. “Hold on.”

There was no missing the house-sized boulder crashing down the mountainside and headed straight for the road. It left craters in the ground as it bounced, a nearly impossible feat for something larger and heavier than a full-grown kraken, but the storm apparently suspended physics because it jumped and dove as if it were made out of rubber. Gushes of water followed it, a slurry of dirt, smaller boulders, and trees.

Her words just speak to me in a way other authors don’t.  It’s a bit disarming how well it syncs with me.  It’s like she can reach into my brain to find what will resonate with me the most.  Certain passages will jump out at me and I end up shouting “Yes!  That’s it exactly!”

The words became sentences and then turned into stories, whispers of someone’s imagination reaching out to touch mine, hanging stars in the darkness of my mind until I possessed a milky universe of worlds where there’d only been a void before.

I’ve been on a bit of an urban fantasy kick lately so Mad Lizard Mambo fit right in.  And this is a true urban fantasy, folks.  There’s no romance.  Well, that’s a lie.  There’s the hint of the start of a romance, maybe, but there’s no sex, no making out and there’s definitely no I love you’s here.  As if Kai would ever stoop to being so vulnerable!  What there is, though, is action and adventure and shenanigans.  And lots of awesome come-backs and one liners.  And guns and gore, but when have you ever read a Rhys Ford book that didn’t have guns and gore?

The most important thing, though, is that this book was fun and a joy to read.  I highly, highly recommend you pick this up.  Even if you don’t typically prefer UF I would be remiss if I didn’t urge you to read this for the descriptive words alone.  I had a blast visiting Kai’s world and I think you would too.

Author Visit: Flux by Kim Fielding

Kim Fielding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nuff said.

DSP Publications has just released my novel Flux. It’s the second edition of the second novel I ever wrote, and it’s the second in the Ennek series. Hooray for seconds!

I used to think I was incapable of writing a novel. I wrote plenty of short stories, but a novel seemed so daunting. All those words! For years I carried the firm conviction that I couldn’t possibly manage anything that long.

Two things changed my outlook.

The first was fan fiction. I started reading it. Um, sort of a lot of it, actually. I suppose it could have been in any fandom, but I ended up in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and specifically I ended up in the world of Spike slash fics. Oh, my beloved Spike. And after reading a whole lot of stories in which Spike hooks up with just about any other male character, I had a plot bunny (It must be bunnies!). And one day I sat down at my computer and began to write. I wasn’t thinking, Gonna write me a novel because this was just fanfic, right? I really just wanted to do some fairly awful things to Spike, have Xander rescue him, and give them a happy ending (in both senses of the phrase).

By the time I looked up from my screen again, I’d written 118,000 words. Holy crap. That’s the length of a fairly long novel. Hmm. I wrote more fanfic after that—something like 125 stories in all—and although some were short, a lot of them weren’t. A few even exceeded that first one; I think my longest was over 135,000 words.

You know what? I thought. Maybe I can write a novel after all.

Around about then I heard of NaNoWriMo—National Novel Writing Month—in which people endeavor to write a short novel (50K words) during the month of November. I decided to give it a shot—and ended up with Stasis (which is longer than 50K). Flux came the following year, and then Equipoise. Having finished the trilogy, during my fourth NaNo attempt I wrote Good Bones—which became a trilogy itself and was also my first professionally published novel.

Right now, I’m working on my 18th novel. Eighteen. My books have come out on audio and have been translated into five languages. One of my shorter pieces was translated into Japanese and published in a yaoi magazine, making me (temporarily, at least) the coolest mom in town. And what I have to thank for it all are Spike and NaNoWriMo.

I’ve previously told the moral of this story: don’t convince yourself you can’t do things. (At least not before you try them. I am convinced that I cannot ski without risk of grievous injury, but that’s based on experience.) But I also think this is a good opportunity to reflect on the strange places the path of life leads us to. I began with vampire fanfic and ended up here. Who knows where I’ll be tomorrow!

Which takes me back to Flux. (See how I did that? Clever!) In this book, Ennek and Miner travel a winding path indeed, encountering many dangers and surprises. I hope you’ll decide to join them.

Blurb:

Ennek, the son of Praesidium’s Chief, has rescued Miner from a terrible fate: suspension in a dreamless frozen state called Stasis, the punishment for traitors. As the two men flee Praesidium by sea, their adventures are only beginning. Although they may be free from the tyranny of their homeland, new difficulties await them as Miner faces the continuing consequences of his slavery and Ennek struggles with controlling his newfound powers as a wizard.

Now fugitives, Ennek and Miner encounter challenges both human and magical as they explore new lands and their deepening relationship with each other.

They shouldn’t have wasted moisture on tears. The vomiting hadn’t helped either. By the time the sun set, the bits of Miner’s exposed skin—his face, his hands—felt hot and sore, and both men were as dry as old paper. Ennek had slept most of the day, slumped against Miner’s chest, but as the sky alit with oranges and reds, he stirred.

“I’m sorry,” he said in a sandpaper voice.

“For what?”

“Not being… better. Stronger. Smarter.”

Miner wasn’t sure whether to laugh at Ennek’s foolishness or cry at the man’s inability to see his own worth. He ended up doing neither, instead caressing Ennek’s back under the shredded shirt, murmuring nonsense syllables at him like a parent might to a distressed child. After a time Ennek pulled away a little. His eyes were very shiny, but he wasn’t crying. “I think we’re not far from land,” he said.

“I saw a gull this morning.”

Ennek nodded. “Good. I can try to steer us to shore. I’m not sure how soon I can row us there, though—”

“You’re in no condition to row us anywhere,” Miner said, because Ennek was still pale and drawn.

“Well, neither are you.” Ennek pointed at Miner’s wrist. Then he frowned and took a closer look at the cut on Miner’s arm. “And this is beginning to fester. You’re dehydrated too.”

“So are you. So much water and nothing to drink.”

Ennek looked out over the edge of the boat and frowned in concentration. “I’ll wager I could remove the salt,” he said, almost to himself.

“You’ve already made yourself sick enough doing magic,” Miner protested.

But Ennek ignored him. He knelt and leaned over the side, scooping up a double handful of sea. Then his frown deepened for a moment and he brought his hands to his face. He sipped cautiously at the liquid and then grinned triumphantly. “It worked! Come here.”

Miner considered arguing but decided that would be pointless. He scooted around until he was next to Ennek, also along the side of the boat.

“Get some water,” Ennek said.

Miner stole a glance over the edge and imagined himself hanging over as Ennek had just done. “I… I can’t.”

Ennek gave him a patient smile. “That’s all right. It probably wouldn’t have worked with your wrist anyway. Hang on.” He leaned over again and brought up more water. “Drink it before it drips away.”

Miner leaned down and put his lips above Ennek’s palms. It was a strangely intimate thing to do, to drink from someone else’s cupped hands. But the water tasted only a bit brackish, and it felt wonderful as it moistened his tongue and throat. He drank it all, and then Ennek gave him another handful and another, and he would have kept on going, but when Miner saw him begin to sway and noticed the way his breaths became harsher, Miner stopped him. “Drink some yourself,” he insisted.

Ennek managed to drink only two handfuls before he collapsed.

“Don’t you dare throw up that water!” Miner said anxiously, moving Ennek’s head into his lap.

“Trying not to.”

Miner rubbed softly at Ennek’s temple. He didn’t know if would help, but he doubted it would hurt. He felt so useless, just sitting there like a great, timid lump. Ennek closed his eyes, and Miner thought he might have fallen asleep. But then ten or fifteen minutes later, he opened them again. “This is a stupid way to die.”

About Rented Heart

Ex-surfer-turned-businessman Liam Mallaney moved back to Holkham, Norfolk, to mourn the loss of his husband. Grief and loneliness keep him a solitary figure, and he likes it that way. There’s no room in his broken heart for anything else.

Rentboy Zac Payne left London and most of his demons behind, but he still only knows one way to make a living. When he spots Liam in a club one night, it seems he’s found his mark. But Liam proves nicer—and their connection far deeper—than he’d bargained for.

Their arrangement quickly becomes too complicated for Zac, who has other things on his mind: namely his BFF and wayward flatmate, Jamie. Zac owes Jamie the world, and even as Jamie’s drug addiction destroys all they have, Zac won’t leave him behind.

Besides, Liam knows nothing of Zac’s home life, too caught up in his own head to think much beyond the crazy heat he and Zac share. But when trouble comes to Zac’s door, putting his life in danger, Liam must set his grief and anger aside to pick up the pieces of Zac’s shattered heart and his own.

Ok.

Ok.

I just love GL.

Ok?

I don’t know what to say! This book goes so smoothly there is nothing I can tell without squeezing my brains out. I’ll make an effort…

It’s not a mystery I love GL to pieces. And this book has only proved once more why that is. She’s quite a talented author, her words just pour a myriad of emotions with no apparent effort, and still, she amazes me with the characters she builds, and how well they fit together despite everything that drifts them apart.

The only thing Zac and Liam have in common is isolation. Not in the obvious sense, but isolation from emotions, loneliness while in the middle of the crowd, abandonment and hopelessness. Their lives are painted with this grey light that surrounds everything. I could feel the sky was cloudy and that it was raining cats and dogs. Constantly.

Yet there is this glance across a darkened alleyway, and something sparks.

A recognition of sorts. An acknowledgement the other one exists. Seeing each other for real, as nobody else ever did.

GL has practice with characters who make a life “out of their bodies”. We have the Blue Boy series, for once. Here we have a male prostitute, Zac, with a drug addiction he managed to overcome barely months ago after a too risky approach to the limits. Unlike his best friend, to whom he owns his life, and more.

Then we have Liam, a businessman, once surfer, with a comfortable life, a life he used to share with his husband. That was years ago, and he’s still mourning.

But one night, he meets Zac, and nothing will ever be the same.

It begins with sex and it’s sex what bonds them together, and then there is sex to chase off loneliness, and sex for comfort, and sex for love. And sex with love. It was sexy in a quiet way, no mischievous and cheeky interactions, but in a quiet and profound way that touched my heart. It’s like Zac and Liam see under the surface, and that they admit there is no need to hide their inner self under a humorous banter. They just find what they have always wanted, and they embrace it with all their being.

Their story is not meant to be lightweight.

It never got repetitive and tiresome, they just are together, and everything flows like water. As subtle as that. As simple as that.

However, their relationship is not as simple as that. Reality gets in the middle.

It’s not an epic story with great ups and downs, endless angst and heroic attitudes from men who try to escape their destiny, and fail. It’s funny because their lives are not exactly a long quiet road. Heavy shit happens.

Still, I just felt this is just a tale of two men with burdens, and that it takes a peaceful rhythm, despite all the ugliness they may find. Despite the grayness of their existence, a numb day after a numb day, they find the fulfilment and warmth they were looking for.

It’s beautiful.

I really recommend this one.

Adam - 3.5 Hearts

Mourning the loss of his husband, Liam Mallaney lives a lonely existence, focusing on his company. That is until he’s propositioned by a rentboy. Desperate for touch, and very attracted to the man, Liam takes Zac up on his offer. Expecting it to be a one-time thing, Liam instead finds that he’s able to connect to Zac in a way that he hasn’t been able to with anyone since his husband’s death.

Zac Payne has been a prostitute since his teens. Selling himself is all he knows. When his latest mark turns out to be a much kinder and considerate man than he’s ever been with before, Zac is wary. After every appointment with Liam, Zac finds himself falling for the man. But he knows it can’t go anywhere, because Zac and Liam come from two completely different worlds.

I know what to expect when I pick up a book by Garrett Leigh. It will be well-written, with two well-rounded main characters, a slow romance, and lots of angst. ‘Rented Heart’ checks off everything on that list. However, it wasn’t as much of an angst-fest as I’d thought it would be.

My heart broke for Liam. He was very much so still grieving for his husband. Though I’m glad that the ghost of Liam’s husband didn’t become the third wheel in the relationship. And I wanted to wrap Zac up and cuddle him until he felt loved.

It was so easy to fall for both Liam and Zac. Both of them were hurting, and both needed someone who would care for them. As their stories were slowly revealed, I was glad that they’d found each other.

description

The sex in this book is pretty hot. And while Liam and Zac exchange money for a lot of it, it didn’t feel forced or fake. Zac wanted Liam just as much as Liam wanted him.

Though I do have to note, in case it’s not your thing, that Zac continues sleeping with other clients for most of the book. But this is before he and Liam discuss being exclusive, and before Zac thinks he can do something other than prostitution.

Most of the drama in the book comes from Zac’s friend, Jamie. Jamie is the closest thing Zac has to family, and he’s also a drug-addicted rentboy. I wasn’t a fan of him, especially considering what he put Zac through, which was pretty predictable. But if Leigh decides to write a story for him, I’d still give it a shot to see whether he can redeem himself.

What holds me back from a full 4 stars is that the relationship development, especially early on, could have used fleshing out. The beginning of Zac and Liam’s relationship is more so telling than showing. I had trouble understanding why two strangers fell for one another so quickly, particularly because Liam and Zac spend very little time together in the first half of the book.

Though it’s clear that Zac and Liam fall deeply for each other, I missed that initial connection that this author usually writes so well.

Even so, ‘Rented Heart’ was a very enjoyable romance. If you’re looking for a romance about second chances that will tug at your heartstrings, give ‘Rented Heart’ a try!

SheReadsALot - 4.5 Hearts

"Am I your only client tonight?"
"Client?" Zac regarded Liam through a haze of smoke. "This ain't Pretty Woman, mate."
 Oh, but it was.

First things first, I haven't read a Garret Leigh before this, so I don't know what the standard or normal quality is. Consider this a virgin review, you dig? (Just about the only thing virgin in here. I kid. I kid.) Leigh is another author I've been meaning to read and it takes a review book to finally pop the cherry.

But the blurb was a SRAL magnet mathematics equation:

1 grieving widower (I want to lick your sweet tears) +
1 rent boy (I swear a trombone plays every time rent boy is mentioned around me) x

Damaged, lonely men = SRAL jackpot!

Garrett Leigh did a great job telling a story that wasn't as dark as I originally thought it would be. Instead, it was angstyish, no way minimizing real life situations. But it had the rent boy romance fairy tale effect going on here something fierce.

Zac, the 23 year old hooker reminded me a lot of this pic:

He's been through so much through his young life, and yet he still keeps going. Liam was supposed be an attractive john, wank fodder to push Zac through his dark days. From day one the two men have enough chemistry to light up the Eiffel Tower.

To read their business/sexual relationship progress into a meaningful one a great read.

Granted, the erotic part was scorching as hell.
"Instead Zac found himself rushing to obey his gentle commands, every instinct screaming at him to make Liam happy because pleasing Liam did amazing this to Zac's heart.
That, and he had a feeling Liam was going to fuck his brains out and he couldn't bloody wait."
There is a lot of sex. (It's a story featuring a sex worker, the reader is taken along to the aftermath of some johns) But I never got tired nor did I think it was too much for the story.

Zac and Liam try to deny each other but that electricity they share can't be denied for long. The way Zac would understand Liam's loneliness added nice touches to the story. Do I wish the couple spent more time together? Yes. But for some reason, it worked for them.

I liked Liam. He was white knight all the way and I was swept up in the fantasy of him, even if he was a surfer (I'm not into them, sorry surfer lovers). I really liked Zac. I liked his tenaciousness, even if I don't think he thinks he is. That spirit that overcomes drug addiction, survived a crap life in the system and streets...he's a wonderfully flawed character.

There were a very few twists that slowly unfurled toward the end, some that I did not see coming. Some parts were a little predictable: the fairy tale ending and way everything is neatly wrapped up in a bow. Jamie made for a good secondary character. I hope the author revisits and shares more info about him in his own starring book. The Brit slang and ease of tone proved the author has a deft hand with writing. The way it didn't get into heavy melodrama, instead letting the main men and their lives lead the direction of the book proved it to me. It wasn't the most remarkable rent boy romance I've ever read, (it's 2016 and rent boy has been done to death though I never tire of it). But it was a solid rent boy romance.

And a rent boy romance wearing the Pretty Woman swirl and a happy ending (no matter how much the story tries to deny it) always makes me stops in my tracks.

The story is a solid 4 Hearts. The fact that I can't seem to stop thinking about he main characters days after finishing? It deserves an extra half heart. I definitely won't wait too long to read another Garrett Leigh.
