Review: Fox Hunt (Shifter U #4) by J. Leigh Bailey

Outfoxing their enemies will be a bear of a task.

Aspiring journalist and fox shifter David ends up with a target on his back after hacking the Moreau Initiative, the shifter world’s greatest enemy. But he won’t let that stop him from the campus tour road trip that’ll help him become the next Anderson Cooper… even if his family insists he travel with a grumpy grizzly bear bodyguard.

Buddy Brady is older, sexy, and too damn distracting for David, and as the sexual tension builds, so does the suspicion around the repeated attacks—first in Chicago, then in New York. Someone is tracking them, and all clues point to a traitor in the shifter ranks. Worst of all, they could be after David’s family....

The fourth book of the Shifter U series delivers the action, mystery, snark and romance I’ve come to expect after reading books 1 - 3. I’ve been wanting Buddy’s story/HEA since he was introduced and the story did justice to my anticipation. I love a literal bear of a man with the personality to match and it’s always been obvious that there was more to Buddy than his size, loyalty and curmudgeonly ways. He just never got the page time to prove it. Until now.

Buddy gets hired to be a bodyguard to fox shifter David after David gets popped hacking into the dark web which in turn open the door to the Moreau Initiative to get access to the shifter servers. David doesn’t have a malicious bone in his body, he’s just a little young, a little naive and a little inexperienced to see far enough ahead and the negative repercussions of his actions. It sucks, and it was an honest mistake. David was trying to help a friend and he figured his journalistic sleuthing skills would serve him well. Instead they got him into trouble, again.

David feels he plays second fiddle to his perfect brother and being the son of the pack alpha doesn’t lighten the pressure on him in the slightest. So, he tries harder than he needs to, but it’s understandable.

Buddy owns his busy and bustling coffee shop, but for the most part he keeps his head down and to himself. There’s definite attraction between Buddy and David, but Buddy keeps David at arms length. He’s there to do a job (he comes from a long line of Enforcers) and David is just too young and beautiful.

The two of them get closer as they spend more time together. They open up to one another and the conversations between them were by far my favorite parts.David is pretty much an open book, but Buddy is more guarded and his background emerged organically as he began to trust David more and more. And the bestest part? The little “moments” they had. I love and am a complete sucker for “moments”. When Buddy spoke to David about his given name and his dreams and David’s reaction made me swoon pretty freakin’ hard. It’s good stuff and speaks to the marshmallowy part of my heart.

The mystery and bad guy kept the tension at just the right level and David’s family dynamics added to it all in a good way. The resolutions were good and not rushed which is always appreciated. The door is open for additional installments of the series, but this book could be read as a stand alone. The series is great fun with memorable characters so I’d definitely recommend the whole shebang though.
David and Buddy are an absolute treat and the coming together of characters like them is a favorite trope of mine. I had high hopes for this story and I’m so happy with everything the author gave these characters and then some.

Giveaway + Blog Tour: Fox Hunt (Shifter U #4) by j. leigh bailey

—Killing Your Darlings—
I’d like to start with a big “Thank you!” to Boy Meets Boy Reviews  for having me here today to celebrate the release of Fox Hunt, the third  book in my Shifter U paranormal series.
Normally I don’t write “extra.” Whenever I’ve needed to delete chunks of text, it’s rarely over a paragraph or two, and never because I exceeded the word count allotted for a book. Not with this one! As I was writing Fox Hunt, I started having fun, developing moments between the characters that deepened their relationship, or that I thought were just cute. So, as much fun as I was having, Fox Hunt just got too long. Unfortunately, books classified as “Category” have fairly strict size limits, so at a certain point, anything not explicitly moving the plot forward can be subject to deletion.
Which means I had to do the thing most authors dread… I had to kill my darlings.  Killing your darlings is a phrase coined by Willian Faulkner that basically means getting rid of the things you love the most—the words, side plots, characters, or turns of phrase that you, the author, personally loves but that, if you’re being honest, don’t really advance your story in any way.
The scene I’m sharing with you today was probably the most painful casualty from my war to reduce my word count…please keep in mind that the scene is unedited, but hopefully you’ll enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
Deleted Scene:
I almost rolled my eyes, but that would probably constitute taking my eyes off the road. And while I wasn’t afraid to defy Buddy, I didn’t want to actively antagonize him.
Several more miles passed. The weighty silence grated over my skin like a sleet storm.
I reached behind the seat, contorting my body until I could grab my messenger bag. I caught the strap and attempted to pull it into my lap. The car rocked, but the bag didn’t move.
I made sure there was no one else on the road, then I peeked over my shoulder and saw that the bag had twisted, angled all wrong to pull between the seatbacks.
A disgusted grunt, then, “Eyes forward, hands on the wheel.” Buddy knocked my hand aside and yanked my bag into the front seat.
“Thanks, I—” I reached for the bag.
Buddy drew it out of reach.
“What the hell?” I glared at him.
“What did you need?” He unzipped the messenger bag.
“Dude, that’s my stuff.”
“And if you’re driving, you don’t need to be pawing through the bag. Either you tell me what you’re looking for or wait until we’re stopped so you can get it yourself.”
This time I did roll my eyes. “I’ve been driving for years now. I think I can handle multitasking—”
“Do you want to know the statistics connecting distracted driving to automotive deaths?”
“Geez, you’re uptight.”
He shrugged.
I could be stubborn when I wanted to. I could wait him out, demand he hand over my stuff. But the clenched jaw and determined stare told me I probably couldn’t out-stubborn him. “Christ, you’d think you were someone’s overprotective mother.”
His stony expression didn’t shift.
“Fine.” I sighed loudly to convey just how stupid I thought this whole thing was. “I want my phone and the USB connector. They should be in the front pocket.”
“Phone?” Disapproval colored his voice.
“I want music, damn it. The silence is killing me.”
He reached into the bag to retrieve my phone. The cord, which had gotten tangled into a messy knot, came next. Between quick glances to make sure I stayed on my side of the highway, I watched as his thick fingers worked deftly to untangle the slippery cord. He made it look surprisingly easy. Jesus, those hands. I had to admit I had a thing for big manly hands. The kind with broad palms, callused fingers, and—
The obnoxious sound of the tires on the rumble strips on the side of the road dragged my attention back where it belonged.
I refused to look at Buddy’s face, no matter how much I wanted to see his expression. Instead I reached forward and turned on the air vents. Man, it was getting warm in here.
From the corner of my eye, I saw Buddy plug the phone’s cord into the appropriate port on my dash. “The music app is on the first screen,” I told him.
He grunted.
Another pause long enough to make me wonder if he even knew what he was looking for. Then he huffed. Not laughter, not really, but it was totally a show of amusement.
“What?” I turned to look at him.
“Eyes. Road.”
“Yeah, yeah. What’s so funny?”
“Your playlists.”
“What about them?”
“Dance Club Divas.”
“Well, sure. They’re dance mixes from the greatest divas of the last few decades.”
“Run for Your Life! complete with exclamation mark.”
“Helps me maintain a good pace. They’re songs with perfect rhythm and timing for a three-mile run.”
“Right. How about Breakup Bastards?”
That one was a little bit more embarrassing. But sometimes a guy needs to vent his way through a breakup. I cringed a bit. “Lots of old school Alanis and Staind.”
Then I remembered what was next on the list. Shit.
“Hot Night Hookups?”
“Uh…” I licked my lips I needed a distraction. “Hey, there should be one there called Red Bull Energy. You know, high energy songs. Good for keeping focused while driving.” Or while pre-gaming for a party, but still….
“Nice try.” He reached forward to increase the volume.
The first strains of Moves Like Jagger filled my car. Heat burned up my chest, to my throat, and onto my cheeks. I was probably as red as the paint of my MINI. And given my Weasley-worthy ginger hair, there was no way it was a flattering look.
He continued to scan my downloaded songs. He burst into laughter, a deep guffaw that made me want to smile. “Boy Band Bonanza?”
“I didn’t do it!” And I hadn’t. As a joke since he got a kick out of my song categorizations, my old roommate had uploaded a bunch of boy bands from original New Kids on the Block to Back Street Boys to One Direction to my iTunes. And sure, I may have listened once or twice—almost always when drunk, I swear—but I refused to take credit for them.
I chanced a glance at Buddy. He was smiling. No, not just smiling. He was grinning in absolute pleasure. The look of unfettered amusement was so different from the grumpy bear thing he’d been perfecting that I wanted to share in the moment and smile in return. Something sweet and warm bloomed in my gut.
And as the music changed from Maroon 5 to Britney Spears’ Toxic, that warmth grew sharp edges and burned a little brighter. Sure, I’d experienced a low-key appreciation for Buddy’s appearance because the guy checked every one of my papa bear fantasies, but personality-wise we clashed. So it had to be the music. Usually when I heard these songs physical things of an adult nature were happening. So my reaction to him in this moment, and the little tendrils of arousal that grew in me, had to be a Pavlovian response. Sexy song equals arousal, regardless of the person those tendrils aimed toward. Sure. Right.
Buddy inhaled a little deeper.
And crap. Buddy was a shifter, and his senses—like smell—were as enhanced as mine. If I could smell how turned on I was becoming, he surely could too.
I cranked up the air fans, hoping it would help dissipate the odor. “So, um, what kind of music do you like? Anything on my list sound good?”
He cleared his throat. “I don’t listen to much music.”
“Excuse me? How’s that even possible?”
“I don’t dislike it or anything. I just listen to a lot of podcasts.”
I gestured for my phone. “Well, let’s put it on shuffle and see what appeals—”
My fingertips barely grazed the screen before he changed his grip to his other hand, out of my reach.
“Seriously, I can manage my phone and a deserted highway at the same—”
My object cut off abruptly when the music changed again. Marvin Gaye’s smooth voice encouraged us to get it on.
Buddy choked.
Red as my face had been a minute ago, it was nothing compared to how hot it was now. Damn it, I must have hit the Next icon on the screen.
“Really?”
I tried for a calm and collected tone when I replied, “It’s meant to be a joke. I mean, it’s like the epitome of sexy songs. I couldn’t not do it.”
He jabbed at the app, and the music changed to the first song in my Red Bull Energy list.
I couldn’t look at him for at least twenty minutes after that, though I swore I felt him watching me.

POST—Sneak Peek at Shifter U #4!
I’d like to start with a big “Thank you!” to Boy Meets Boy Reviews  for having me here today to celebrate the release of The Night Owl and the Insomniac, the third  book in my Shifter U paranormal series.
Throughout the series, Buddy’s Café has played a prominent role. In Stalking Buffalo Bill, Donnie works, then manages, the café where he and William meet for the first time. In Chasing Thunderbird, Ford works at the café, and it is a meeting spot—and setting for the beginning of the action scenes in the book. In The Night Owl and the Insomniac, the café is where Yusuf and Owen meet David to start investigating the whys and hows of Yusuf being a shifter. So, yeah, Buddy’s Café has been there. In the background, of course, is Buddy’s Café’s owner, grizzly bear shifter Buddy Brady.
In Chasing Thunderbird, we meet David Sherman, a fox shifter reporter whose need to make his mark in journalism manages to share information about Simon’s family that the cryptozoologist would rather keep hidden. Then, in The Night Owl and the Insomniac, David’s nosiness is a tool Owen and Yusuf need to help Yusuf find out how, exactly, he suddenly turns into an Asiatic lion of all things.
In Night Owl, we also get to meet Buddy Brady in person. The bear shifter, and yoga aficionado, is the only local shifter big enough to keep a lion shifter in line while said lion learns to control his wilder half.
Yes, the added importance of David and Buddy in The Night Owl and the Insomniac was a deliberate choice—the next book in the Shifter U series (which is still in progress!) will pair the wily fox shifter reporter with the grumpy, yoga-doing grizzly bear shifter on a road trip adventure.
It’s a little rough, but here’s an exclusive (unedited) sneak peek from Fox Hunt, the next book in the Shifter U series. Enjoy!

A Shifter U Tale
Long nights lead to intrigue… and infatuation.
Chronically ill with a mysterious condition, Yusuf “Joey” Franke escapes his smothering family and doctors by moving halfway across the country to enroll in Cody College. Not long after arriving on campus, some of his symptoms disappear, only to be replaced by debilitating insomnia. Joey spends his nights wandering the halls of his dormitory and hanging out with gregarious and affable Owen, who works the night shift.
When he suddenly shifts from a sick college kid to a massive Asiatic lion, Joey discovers another side to Cody College—it’s a haven for shifters like himself… and like Owen, a part-time great horned owl. And being a shifter is hereditary, which means his parents have some explaining to do.
When Joey and Owen investigate, they discover more than they bargained for—a family deception, a dangerous enemy with international connections, and a love that might be too new to survive the backlash.
Excerpt:
Holding my breath, I eased the front door open, pausing to make sure I hadn’t disturbed anyone in the household. I’d tried to time my escape to avoid running into any of my mother’s guards. Most of the enforcers on duty would ignore an approved guest or family member’s departure—they were there to keep others out not in, after all—but there were a few who’d likely been briefed on the plans. Besides, they had no grounds to detain me. Mom was in charge, sure, but unless I’d done something to warrant arrest, I couldn’t really be held against my will.
I hefted the first of my two suitcases and set it gently on the front porch before reaching for the next. Then I reached for the matching duffle back and looped the strap around my neck so my hands would be free to carry the rest of my luggage. It took me a ridiculously long time to make my way down the porch and around the side of the garage to where my car was parked.
A large figure loomed in the dark, silhouetted in the waning moonlight.
I squeaked, dropping my suitcases. The resulting thuds seemed to echo unnaturally in the pre-dawn silence.
“Morning.”
I squeezed my eyes shut. Damn it all to hell…
Buddy Brady was impressive. Easily six and a half feet tall, shoulders wide enough to suit two men, and bulky muscles that were softened only a little by a thin layer of fat that was common to bear shifters. I knew as the weather grew colder, that layer of fat would thicken. Bear shifters didn’t hibernate like their wilder brethren, but their metabolism slowed drastically and they tended to hole themselves up in the winter. He practically dwarfed my red and white MINI Cooper. I was half afraid that if he even propped his hip against the passenger door, my car would crumple under the sheer weight of him.
He wasn’t leaning against my baby, thankfully. Instead, he stood by the truck, a boring black duffle bag at his feet, his hands tucked into the pockets of khaki cargo shorts that had probably never been introduced to an iron. A baggy Buddy’s Café T-shirt and brown leather flip-flops completed the rumpled look. Even his hair was a shaggy mess, and dark stubble shadowed his cheeks and jaw. Actually, he looked like he’d just rolled out of bed and grabbed a couple things from his hamper before heading over here.
Given the sun was barely a pink glow that hadn’t yet crested the Rocky Mountains, chances were good that he had just rolled out of bed. Thick brown brows rose and he pulled a hand free from his pocket to glance at his watch. He wasn’t checking the time, not really. His wry look was more a commentary on the fact that we were supposed to leave at six, and here it was, not even five a.m.
“What are you doing here?” I demanded, tipping my wheeled suitcases to stand upright. I shrugged, dropping the matching duffle bag to the driveway.
“Waiting for you,” he said in a quiet bass that added an edge of velvet to his matter-of-fact tone.
“But you’re early.”
He snorted. “So’re you.”
Well, yeah, that was kind of the point. I’d had trouble falling asleep, and the more time I had to think, the more convinced I became that my mom and Darren were overreacting. The chances of the Moreau Initiative gunning for me were slim. I mean, maybe, if our luck ended up being bad, they might put in the effort to send someone to check out Mom’s place, but from the outside, the property looked like someone’s hobby ranch; there was nothing to indicate this was the home of one of the country’s most influential shifters. Even if they somehow got onto the ranch the security team would send them on their way. So, really, there was no need to foist a bodyguard on me. Which meant the only reason Mom had brought Buddy into this was that she didn’t trust me.
Even I recognized the contradiction. Sneaking out of the house, something that was distinctly untrustworthy, was maybe not the best way to prove my trustworthiness.
I sighed, dragging my bags a little closer, less concerned than I’d been about the noise. The jig, as they say, was up. “How’d you know?”
He shrugged one massive shoulder. “Just a hunch.”
“You know this isn’t necessary, right?” I reached into my pocket to click the key fob, releasing the back hatch.
“Got nothing better to do.”
I looked up at him. Damn, but he was big. I was pretty tall—exactly six feet—but next to Buddy, I felt positively petit. I had a second to wonder if my MINI, which was, by design, small, could accommodate his bulky body. It was perfectly comfortable for me with my admittedly slimmer frame, but he had half a foot of height, probably a hundred pounds, and double the body width on me. After what seemed like the longest ascent ever, the hatchback was finally open. Before I could reach down to heft my luggage into the storage area, Buddy had a suitcase gripped in each hand and tossed them into the space as if they weighed practically nothing.
“I can do it,” I said, snatching at the duffle bag and fitting it in the narrow space left after the larger pieces.
Warmth prickled along my back and an earthy scent surrounded me as Buddy leaned over me to tuck his own bag in the last of the space. I closed my eyes to better savor the pine tree and granite odor, cataloguing each nuanced layer. Then I remembered that this was Buddy and my mother had hired him to essentially babysit me. I straightened my back—and my resolve—and slammed the hatchback closed.
“We should work out the details of the trip before we get too far. Work out the rules.”
My recently straightened back stiffened further. “Excuse me? First of all, we don’t need to work out any details. I’ve already done so. Second of all, what the hell do you mean by rules? This is my trip. The only rules are the ones I make. You’re basically a shifter council-sanctioned, mother-approved stowaway. Hired muscle.”
The first golden rays of the sun peeked over the edge of the Rockies, illuminating Buddy’s stony face. Jaw clenched, eyes narrowed, lips pursed…my pulse skittered a bit at the anger I saw there. And then the expression morphed into something cooler, more neutral. Might have been a trick of the light, but I caught a hint of something bleaker, hint of vulnerability that seemed out of place on his face.
“Rules was maybe the wrong word.” His expression might have smoothed out, but his voice was tight. He cocked his head as though loosening stiff neck muscles. “But there are always things that it’s a good idea to work out in advance. Driving schedule, itinerary, route.”
“Driving schedule?” Horror washed over me. “No one drives my car but me.” Just the thought of this hulking brute behind the wheel of my baby made me want to encase the MINI in a protective shield.
“Even professional drivers can only drive ten hours before a mandatory eight-hour break because marathon driving isn’t safe. Unless you intend to do the same?”
“It’ll be fine. It’s not like we’ll be driving non-stop. I have sleep stops planned each night. I’m not an idiot.”
A tic in his cheek told me he didn’t appreciate my tone. And, sure, it wasn’t fair to take my irritation at my family out on Buddy. It wasn’t his fault that he got wrangled into this. But I didn’t ask him to join me, so I wasn’t responsible for making the trip comfortable. Besides, once it became obvious that I was perfectly safe, maybe his annoyance would convince him to abandon me. So I didn’t apologize, even if my conscience pushed for me to do so.
“Fine. I still need to review the itinerary.”
He walked around the car to the passenger side door. His movement were surprisingly graceful for such a large man. In the wild, bears tend to lumber along, a clumsy, awkward motion that only seemed to smooth out when they were charging. Given his size, I expected something similar. But no, his steps were light, flowing for maximum impact with minimum effort, reminding me more of a running back on the football field than the defensive lineman he more closely resembled.
I shook my head. I had places to go and people to see—no time to stop an analyze the way some guy—Buddy Brady, for crying out loud—moved.
I slid into the driver’s seat and pressed the start button. A second later, the MINI jolted as Buddy crammed himself in. I snorted out a laugh. The seat had been pushed pretty far forward because I’d needed the extra space in the backseat to help my old roommate move his things to his girlfriend’s apartment. I hadn’t moved the seat back afterward since I rarely had passengers, so it hadn’t mattered that there was no room. But now it mattered. Buddy’s knees were bent at a sharp angle and pressed into the glove compartment. The front of his thighs practically touched his stomach.
A low grumbled came from him at my snort of laughter.
Somehow he managed to twist further, reach around and under his bent legs, face practically smashed into his legs. He began to pat at the underside of his seat. And he managed all this without grunting or groaning at the effort. Looked awkward as hell, and he’d bent and twisted in ways I didn’t think I could, even with my narrower build.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
He sent me some kind of weird side-eye/eye-roll combination that told me just how stupid he thought the question was. “Looking for the lever to adjust the seat.”
“Oh! Um, it’s electric. There’s a little button long the side.” I point to his right side.
He unfolded himself as best he could and reached between the seat and the door, searching for the button. I tried not to notice the way his shorts crept up his thigh, revealing heavy muscles and pale skin. There was a distinct line where pale beige skin became rich honey, a testament to hours outside in shorts. There was nothing sexy about a tan line. Except in that moment, there kind of was.

So, just for fun (and for a chance to win), have you read any new shifter books that you really enjoyed? Ones I just have to check out? I’ll be giving away a digital copy of Stalking Buffalo Bill or Chasing Thunderbird to a random commenter! Giveaway will close on July 21.

Tag Team Review: The Night Owl and the Insomniac (Shifter U #3) by j. leigh bailey

Long nights lead to intrigue… and infatuation.

Not long after arriving on campus, some of his symptoms disappear, only to be replaced by debilitating insomnia. Joey spends his nights wandering the halls of his dormitory and hanging out with gregarious and affable Owen, who works the night shift.

Sara - 5 Hearts

I want to spend at least a semester at Cody College just to prowl around the campus grounds and see if I can see piles of discarded clothes or spot any of the shifters that attend in their shift. I find this community absolutely amazing and endearing that I can’t get enough. I thought I fell in love with Donnie and William in Stalking Buffalo Bill and then I thought I found more love in Simon and Ford in Chasing Thunderbird. But I didn’t know what love was until I met Yusuf and Owen. Goodness, this was such a journey and I loved every bit of it.

What always gets me about shifter stores is how varied they can be while still holding true to the shifter lore. Here, we have a young man who has believed for the last 15 years of his life that he has had some bizarre autoimmune disease being tested and tortured through modern medicine to find out what’s wrong to only be left disillusioned and sickly. But when Yusuf leaves the comfortable--and controlling--hold of his parents in Chicago to attend Cody College in Wyoming, he gets a new lesson that wasn’t on any course syllabus.

The meet cute with Yusuf and Owen was so freaking adorable. I love that Yusuf knew exactly how many steps would take him through Matthison Hall and how we get their first meeting with Owen overwatering a plant. It’s such a simple meeting and yet everything from that moment on is anything but simple for these two.

Yusuf aka Joey, but I prefer Yusuf just like Owen does, was a new sort of shifter for me because he has no idea that he is a shifter and that the majority of folks on campus are also shifters, or at least aware that they exist. All Yusuf knows is that he’s always been sick and that he can’t sleep at night because he gets an itchy feeling under his skin that keeps him up. Now, having read not only this series, but a good amount of shifter stories once I read that, I knew it was his shifter side wanting to get out. I just didn’t know what his shift would be until it happened, and I of course I immediately went to Google to see how amazing Yusuf would look. But at the same time, I hurt for him because OMG how crazy would it be for anyone to suddenly turn from human to animal and not know WTF was going on. It’s a good thing Yusuf was around friends when it happened and that Owen’s dad happens to be a doctor who works at the clinic where they quickly take Yusuf so he won’t hurt himself or anyone else while shifted.

Owen is so fantastic in this book. I love that this series doesn’t pair same species shifters but let's… well, nature take its course. Owen is a great horned owl and Yusuf shifts into Asiatic Lion so on paper these two shouldn’t work in their shift but the truly compliment each other so well.

The journey of discovery and acceptance Yusuf takes is a tough one. First, he has to accept he turns into an animal. Then he has to face the possibility that either he’s been adopted and his parents know nothing about his shifter side. Or that they have been lying to him for years and letting him be a test subject of horrible tests for years to keep their secret. Either way, it’s a path that leads Yusuf to a dangerous discovery and one where he has to make the choice to fully accept his lion or to walk from everything and everyone he has started to care about.
The author has a firm grasp on the Dreamspun Beyond line balancing the complexity of the shifter world with the fluff I’ve come to adore from the Dreamspun line. There is enough of both sides to keep you interested in the world building and swooning along with the romance as the couple finds their way to their HEA.

Owen and Yusuf were a pure pleasure to read. Owen is such a strong young man in both forms and he wants nothing than to take care of Yusuf. He knows from the beginning that being an owl isn’t the best shift to help a lion learn control. So the introduction of Buddy the bear gave moments of frustration for Yusuf, but high interest for this reader. Also, David… hmm. There are a couple guys who showed up in this book that I am curious about and honestly would love Buddy to find a mate who could handle the grumpy bear.

But back to Yusuf and Owen because I adored the holy heck out of them. Their romance was of the slow burn variety as Owen took his time with Yusuf who wasn’t only struggling with his new shifter side but his sexuality he hadn’t actually considered before. Being sick was all Yusuf knew so he isn’t sure if he’s gay, bi or just Owen sexual but he does know who his lion wants and who he wants to protect.

The secret with the parents went down really well and all the secrets were in line with a creepy paranormal theme as it should be. The end gave me a ridiculous amount of emotions that landed me with a firm hug to my Nook as I finished.

One quick thing… I am in LOVE with this cover! Wow. Yusuf on the cover with his eyes and light hair and that drawing of an owl right behind him. It does it for me so much!

Okay.
I’m wrapping this up.

This is another winner in this series and I hope the author has more stories from Shifter U for me.

Ann - 4.5 Hearts

I really do love this series and The Night Owl and the Insomniac is officially my favorite of the three (shhhh - don’t tell the guys from #1 and #2). Yusef and Owen are just ideal characters and I simply liked them so much. Honestly, you could strip out all of the shifter shenanigans and I would still have loved the story just as much.

In the first two stories in the series, one MC in each couple is part of the badass variety of shifter, they are more “in the know” with the shifter council and are alpha-level level protective of their kind. The couples were intriguing and I loved them, but Yusef and Owen are different and I loved them even more.

Yusef and Owen are young men still figuring out their live and Yusef has the extra burden of discovering he’s a shifter. He’s been sickly his whole life, isolated because of his human medical issues. Once he gets to Cody College though he discovers his real deal is that he’s not human and once he learns to shift his health problems are gone. He’s actually completely normal for shifter physiology.

The author does a great job of balancing Yusef’s innocence with his new found independence and strength. It was my favorite part of the story. Owen wants nothing more than to take care of Yusef and make him happy. And while Yusef is tired of getting the mother hen treatment from everyone, he can’t help but be floored by the care and love Owen shows for him. He doesn’t really get it, but he’s smart enough to be flattered and his cluelessness is adorable.

I am making it sound more simplistic than it was. There was plenty of shifter drama and potential familial betrayal to stay within the theme of the series, and it did escalate the closeness between Yusef and Owen and my impatient self was completely fine with that. Their relationship didn’t feel rushed at all though and the fact that Yusef was never portrayed as a victim made me believe in a future HEA for these two.

The beauty of this story was in the pureness in the feelings Owen and Yusef have and I could write odes to the awesomeness that is Owen. It wasn’t until I started reading that I realized how much I’ve missed a relationship story like this and I would have loved to keep reading about these two. Yusef is discovering who he is and Owen is supporting him in every way and while it’s all new to Yusef he’s nothing if not honest in his feelings just like Owen is. It was so refreshing to read a love story like this.

This was the first story in the series where Buddy had more of a presence and I really hope he has a story coming soon. A grumpy bear who does yoga? Yes please! This one was a total treat though. I got my shifter fix along with a charmingly adorable love story. I’m already impatient for the next one.
