Review: The Scouts (The Order #3) by Kasia Bacon

Soldiers. Lovers. Soulmates.

Lochan and Ervyn—an assassin and a sharpshooter—remain in service to the Queen as part of an elite reconnaissance unit.
The Scouts are ghostlike. Elusive. Deadly.
They strike at enemies of the Crown without mercy. They get the job done, leaving no loose ends or witnesses. When Magic Supremacists threaten the safety of Elven Country, they do their duty—whatever it takes.
Lochan and Ervyn belong to each other, but will serving together as comrades-in-arms strengthen their bond as lovers or tear them apart?

The Scouts is the third book in the Order Series. In this volume, Ervyn loses control, Lochan stops fighting his feelings and Verhan… well, remains Verhan.

Recommended reading order: The Mutt, The Highlander, Twenty-One Arrow Salute, The Scouts.

TAGS:

It’s no secret that I adore Ms. Bacon’s world of The Order, and this long awaited sequel to Ervyn and Lochan did not fail me. If you’re new to this universe, my recommendation is to read in publishing order starting with The Mutt.

In case you didn’t know, Ervyn and Lochan are soldiers in the Scouts, the best of the best of the Queen’s elite defense, doing the impossible missions that only a very select few can accomplish. This time around, they’re trying to stop magic supremacists from causing havoc on the kingdom, and they are in desperate need of intel. The thing is, in order to get said intel, it will put their relationship to the test.

I admit at first that I was a bit disgruntled to find out that this starts technically 2.5 years after The Highlander, because I really wanted to see all the details of Ervyn and Lochan’s burgeoning relationship. Though they are definitely committed now, both still harbor that deep buried fear that maybe, just maybe, they’re not good enough to keep the other. So, when this important mission throws a potential wrench in their dynamic, it puts them in a tailspin of insecurity, doubt, and jealousy. What it also does is allow the reader to bask in some delicious emotions, as well as some very intimate scenes between these two strong, capable, and lethal men, who only show vulnerability (rarely and sparingly) to the other. Unf! I love when that happens!

Instead of whetting my appetite, Ms. Bacon has only served to make me hungrier, and it will be a very long, torturous, pining wait for the next installment because though she leaves things not necessarily on a cliffhanger, there’s just enough of a hint of more challenges ahead for Ervyn and Lochan. For now, be reassured that this had plenty of action and suspense, swoony feels, romantic smexy, and a deeper peek into their touching, intense relationship, ending with these two solidly confident in each other’s love. I have no doubt we’ll be put through an emotional ringer in the future for other reasons, but the payoff will be well worth it, the tease here, always making you want more. So much more.

Brava Ms. Bacon! Thank you so much for this, and I’m just putting it out there that I’m still eagerly waiting for all your other stories that need to come out, in the event you were wondering and weren’t sure of my wants and needs and desires. *wink*

Review: When I First Saw Red (Soldiers & Mercenaries #2) by Kasia Bacon

RED:
Lázhien’s human. A common Imperial soldier. And my soulmate.
How could fate get it so wrong?
The demon in me craves this bond with every shred of his being. He pushes me to accept it. This time I won’t yield to his demands.

LÁZHIEN:
Red’s a lust demon, a whore and a stuck-up snob.
The most beautiful man I’ve ever seen. Pain in the arse. And he hates my guts.
I’d be an idiot to pursue him. Yet something about him compels me to make him mine.

When I First Saw Red is a complete and standalone short novel with an HEA ending, featuring a couple of reluctant fated soulmates—a demon and a human—trying and failing to defy destiny.

When I saw this come across the blog there was no question I wanted to read it, and I grabbed it up without paying too much attention to the blurb. All I needed to know was that this was a Kasia Bacon story, and it was set in her wonderful Order Universe.

This time around, the romance focuses on soldier Lazhien, who’s not typically one to frequent brothels, but a lonely free night nudges him towards the local establishment just to get out of the barracks to kick back and have a drink. He really has no set plans to indulge, but when he lays eyes on the most beautiful man he’s ever seen, the attraction bowls him over despite his slight aversion towards paying for sex, and Lazhien surprises himself by offering an exorbitant amount for a night with the Tii-Matashi.

What Lazhien doesn’t realize is that Okkano is equally knocked on his ass, that being a “two-soul”, the demon incubus that inhabits his being has apparently marked Lazhien as his. Okkano certainly doesn’t want to be tied down, he for sure doesn’t want to be further dictated by the demon in him, and he absolutely definitely doesn’t want what looks like a dumb brute of a solider as his soulmate no matter how delicious his big muscles are. To say the least, the dislike at first sight (and on principle) from both sides is palpable but so is the rampant desire and want that is pulling Lazhien and Okkano together like nobody’s business, something that they can barely resist as they try to keep things in check unsuccessfully.

These two fight what feels so right and they have plenty of reasons and assumptions to not finalize such a permanent bond, but Bacon throws in some very good twisty feels and angsty baggage to make Lazhien and Okkano’s pairing all the more rewarding once they come to their stubborn senses.

This is by far the sexiest of the author’s works regarding such a buildup, despite the lack of fully fleshed out explicit details where it counts. Regardless, I loved what I got and greatly enjoyed myself, simply asking for more yumminess in whatever the next book may be. Pretty pretty please with a cherry on top?

Essentially, I’m biased, and I don’t think this author can really do any wrong with the fantastical, rich, and complex world she has created. I’ll continue to happily line up for her stories for as long as she churns them out, and I can only hope it will be for many years to come!

EXCERPT

“Come in,” a clipped voice called from the other side of the door in response to my knocking.
My gullet constricted as I turned the handle. Thanks to the gods the creaking of the old hinges muffled a loud gulp that escaped me.
The room proved to be a well-lit suite, larger and fancier than I’d expected. I assessed my surroundings within a quick couple of glances. Vases of fresh flowers and bowls of fruit here and there introduced splashes of colour throughout the space, which was filled with sparse but fine furnishings. A healthy-sized blaze crackled in the tiled fireplace. The vibrant wall-to-wall rug reminded me of the exotic hand-woven textiles I’d encountered during my deployment in the South Isles.
There he stood by the vast four-poster bed—the object of my lecherous thoughts. My tormentor, who’d inspired dozens of ferocious wank sessions over the previous week. A true miracle I hadn’t chafed myself raw.
He was barefoot again. I wondered if he had an aversion to footwear. His glossy, vibrant hair—fashioned into a tousled plait and tied with a dark ribbon—splayed down his chest on one side, reaching his waist. I couldn’t fault the manner in which his white unbuttoned shirt and snug breeches revealed more than they covered.
My heart fluttered in my chest, frantic like a trapped bird.
He snapped shut a silk painted fan he’d held in his hand and cast it aside, eyeing me in silence as he crossed his arms over his chest and propped one hip against the pillar.
I wouldn’t have called his demeanour friendly. For whatever reason, he’d agreed to the engagement, but his body language couldn’t have screamed fuck off any louder.
His puzzling attitude agitated me on the spot, just as much as his looks enthralled me.
“Good evening,” I said, rougher than I’d intended, addressing him in Common Elven. Not that I counted on dazzling him with my linguistic ability, mind you. Or proving myself less of an uncultured ignoramus than he’d likely taken me for. Nothing like that. At all. “I’m Sergeant Jhagán.”
After a small pause, which he devoted to giving me an appraising squint, he granted me a regal head tilt in the way of a greeting.
Heavenly gods almighty.
The clench of my jaw brought on a feeling of fullness in my ears. Who the fuck did he think he was? The Emperor receiving homage? I couldn’t believe the snooty Elfling arse. And speaking of arse, didn’t it make me a bigger one since I’d financed this sorry venture with recent card winnings, a pawned family heirloom and an advance against my next three wages? Less than two minutes in, I already found myself spinning in the same cycle of intermittent fury and desire I’d experienced around him on the previous occasion. Because yes, I wanted to kick him in the groin with my reinforced leather boot. And then kiss him senseless.
Not knowing what to do or say felt foreign to me. Irritated by my sudden diffidence, I stepped farther inside—uninvited—and threw a pouch stuffed with coins onto his dresser. It turned out a thousand-worth of silvers made one hell of a clank landing in a pottery dish.
His eyes slitted. “How predictably vulgar,” he said in the most cut-glass accent I’d ever heard.
Out of nowhere, I appeared to have developed a severe teeth-grinding habit. Did he try and test my patience on purpose? I wasn’t savvy on brothel etiquette, but his behaviour hardly struck me as customer-centred. Why the hell were his services held in such high regard if he treated all his patrons like dirt? Or was it what kept them so keen? Either way, I shouldn’t have thought him adorable when he glared at me in distaste, his perfect, slightly upturned nose wrinkling and his lashes throwing long shadows over his cheekbones. Desire zigzagged down my spine. Unable to speak for the next few moments, I focused on calming my quickened breathing.
He continued standing perfectly still, ever-so-mocking and enragingly self-possessed, never averting his eyes from mine. “What would you have of me, Sergeant?”
I didn’t like the way he emphasised my rank. Neither did I appreciate the blasé note to his tone. My nerves strummed with tension. Stupid disappointment knotted my stomach at the reminder that he saw me as just another patron. And one who made his skin crawl more than others, at that. After rubbing shoulders—and more—with the nobles, being saddled with a grubby soldier like me must’ve felt like a demotion to him. Yet clearly, my coin didn’t smell offensive to him.
Since I didn’t answer, he appeared to have grown impatient and broke the silence. “Let’s get right to it,” he said with a pointed look, indicating the evident hard-on that stretched the seam of my crotch rather obscenely. “You seem roaring to start.”
Heat rose to the nape of my neck, but my uneasiness hadn’t affected my nether regions. I didn’t go on wasting time fretting over my performance. Oh fuck, no. I couldn’t wait to lay my hands on the cheeky bastard. To dig my fingers into his hips. To force him down, face-first into the…
I wasn’t quick to anger, but he seemed to excel at exasperating me. I sucked in a deep breath. Before we got to the meat of the matter, the situation required a slight redefinition.
It took two strides for me to face him up close. A childish pissing contest or not, the way I towered over him pleased me. “What I’d have of you, Red,” I said, pronouncing the last word in Imperial Common instead of using his Elven name, “is to stay quiet. And wiggle out of those togs in a flash.”
An ironic smile tugged at his lips, and he nodded as if in agreement with himself. “A savage, naturally. As befits a soldier.”
I tried to rein in my frustration along with my arousal. My endeavours to do so had yielded no success. I reinforced my earlier instructions with a quirk of an eyebrow and a jerky gesture that never failed to work back in the barracks.
That got His Royal Arseness’s attention.
Without looking away, he proceeded to peel the shirt off his shoulders, every deliberate move uncovering more and more of his pale, flawless flesh to my hungry gaze.
By then, my own skin had flushed with warmth and tingled all over. I caught myself shivering in anticipation. I didn’t bother to hide my reaction.
Unhurried, he yanked at the drawstrings of his trousers. The fitted fabric put up only brief resistance.
“That’s enough,” I barked before he could pull his trousers past his mid-thighs. To my satisfaction, my well-practised sergeant’s tone made him blanch. The way the garment restricted his movements appealed to me. All of him appealed to me. Including his bared cock—a slender, veiny perfection. Which was the opposite of flaccid.
Well, fuck me sideways. How about that?
The ice prince turned out to be quite rigid indeed. In all the right places, too. I could’ve made an effort to conceal my knowing smirk. I didn’t.
“The oil’s by the bed stand,” he said in a dry tone, no doubt irritated at the evidence of his own interest poking into the air. He shifted and made to position himself face down on the bed, providing me with a good view of his exquisite, round globes.
I clenched my teeth again. This time, to prevent my load from blowing.
So he expected me to fuck him from behind with no further ado. Did that hurt my feelings? Not really. Honest to the gods, I wanted nothing more than to cover his lean frame and crush him flat into the mattress while pushing inside him raw. To hold him beneath me and ram into him, taking my week-old frustration out on his arse. I would’ve been within my right, as I’d paid damn well for the privilege. But doing the very thing he anticipated from a savage rubbed me the wrong way.

Tag Team Review + GIVEAWAY: Don't Fight the Spark (Soldiers and Mercenaries #1) by Kasia Bacon

As the Light Festival draws near, the Něssyrians craft paper lanterns, awaiting the most important holiday of the year.

The Lyliňg Fighting House, too, prepares for celebration—by laying fresh sand onto the arena and setting up a match against their top pit fighter, the unrivalled Yüuzuki Ōren.

His last match. One he can’t win.

With the odds more than stacked against him, the gorgeous Barbarian is as good as dead. Unless his lover, healer Ĥaiatto Ẽkana, proves himself every bit as determined as he is clever and finds a way to protect the man he'd stop at nothing to save.

We have not only a tag team unicorn review but an awesome visit from the author with prizes for 3 lucky people! See all below!

Gods. The more I read about this world and it's varied inhabitants, the more I want and crave and need.

Continued complexity in this intriguing fantastical universe, slowly weaving an intricate piece of the grand puzzle as all of Bacon’s stories are intertwined and connected and as usual, this was just not enough!!

I don’t want to give much away, but this was a tender, emotional story of two lovers, one resigned to his fate, the other desperately determined to subvert it and bend it to his will against impossible odds. This also gives a glimpse of the infamous Grandmaster Assassin of The Order itself, Lu Feninghan, and I can’t wait for his story. It better be on the horizon!!

This technically isn’t a stand alone, and though I haven't read all of Bacon’s works, I don’t think one could go wrong with publishing order, and I'm going to rectify that soon and read the other two I was holding off on. The author herself recommends at least reading The Poison Within first, and I totally concur. Enjoy!

Sara - 5 Hearts

One would think by now having read and fallen in love with every book Kasia Bacon has released that I would get used to this feeling. One would think but one would be wrong. Each and every story, though familiar with the world of The Order is brand new and I fall for each couple just as fast and hard. It only took me reading the first page to feel how much Ĥaiatto cared for Yüu and how much the relationship with him had to be kept secret. I was in love, on board and ready to dive in.

True to The Order fashion, this is a short book and I wish I knew how the author is always able to pack so much emotion, world building and just artistry into the novella’s because it and she are magic. So because this is short, I’ll not produce a fangirl ramble and keep this review short. By the Gods, I promise I will. Maybe? Who knows?
You learned to pick your battles when you loved a fighter.
Ĥaiatto is a healer, one who does not possess solitary magic but the ability to use magic to heal others. He is currently employed at The Lyliňg Fighting House as their healer and his main job is to heal fighters of the pit. When their top pit fighter, the unrivaled Yüuzuki Ōren landed on his table some three years ago, Ĥaiatto treats and falls hard for him and begins a secret but passionate relationship with the fighter.

There is always something about secret relationships that tugs at my hopeless romantic heart while also tearing it apart. The level of commitment to be with the one you love no matter the consequence lends a level of romance but then the fact that the commitment is hiding who they are to one another to everyone, is sad. Yüu and Ĥaiatto have figured out a good balance to be together and the tall, gangly and awkward healer often wonders if his feelings are returned from Yüu. When Yüu is brought in to be healed after his last fight and Ĥaiatto learns of a twist Yüu’s next fight, Ĥaiatto will do everything his can to save his lover and give them a chance at a future… together.

Oh man! I loved this one super hard. Ĥaiatto is an amazing story teller and the characters he meets to secure a future was a joy to read. I do wonder if we will get a book with the Grandmaster and the Vamper because I am sure there is something between them. But Ĥaiatto and his love for Yüu made me feel. To be honest, reading and I have been having issues but this book made me feel and feel hard. I was waiting for the punch to the feels moment and once I got it, they just kept coming and I was happier than a ten puckered owl.

Now Yüu, I am so thankful we get his backstory and how he came about to be fighter in the pits at The Lyliňg Fighting House. It’s heartbreaking but gives him such strength of character that when Ĥaiatto proposes they spend the rest of their lives together… well, read the book to experience that scene. Kay?
“This Yüuzuki, […] Who is he to you?”
“Everything. He’s everything.”
This was just so good. I was holding my breath toward the end and freaking out a little but then I danced in my seat when Eryssa shows up and then when we see her reunion with Caylii. Giddy would be an understatement. That epilogue was pure perfection and I love how sweet Yüu is with his healer.

I have to say the title makes me smile and when you read the book (Read.The.Book.) you’ll figure out why.

I’ll stop rambling now but just know, I want more. I’m so ready for more.

WARNING

They brought him to me bloodied and beaten to a pulp three days before the Night of Lights.
Being battered black and blue after a fight came with the territory for an ih’mohrô, even one as good as Yüuzuki Ōren. Not once in the past, however, had he ended up unresponsive in my treatment room. My stomach plummeted at the sight of two guards hauling him between them like a sack of coal. Was the dread that had haunted my dreams about to transpire?
Careful not to unmask my fear, I schooled my features. “Here.” I ushered the men to the exam table, erected in the middle of my study for easy access.
I did my best not to wince when Yüu’s limp body landed on top of the linen-dressed surface with a dull thump.
I got to him in two leaps and busied myself with arranging him in a recovery position. Placing two fingers on the inside of his wrist, I took his pulse. It felt thready and rapid, but it was there. I observed his chest rising and falling in shallow but regular breaths. Having seen no evidence of a collapsed lung or any blockage in his airways, I sighed with relief.
The blood caking his body—part dried, part fresh—prevented me from fully determining the damage.
I ordered the men to step back and allow me room to work. The next moment, I snatched my emergency kit from the side cabinet and prepared a basin of fresh water, dampening a soft muslin washcloth in it. Having settled Yüu onto his back with speed and care, I proceeded to clean the skin of the wounded man.
Not just any man, but the one I loved.
The scanty outfit of a pit-fighter, consisting of a simple loincloth, allowed me to get on with my task right away, taking stock of his injuries as the sweeping movements of my hands uncovered more and more scrapes, cuts and contusions.
Yüu was as tough as they came. The toughest. I would know, having treated him and other prized combatants of the Lyliňg Fighting House for over three years. If his body shut down, going into shock from blood loss and pain, both must’ve been significant.

Anniversary Shenanigans: Author Visit + Giveaway - Kasia Bacon

Fantasy lovers and fans of pining we're in for a treat today! Kasia Bacon takes over the clubhouse today with a visit and amazing giveaway!

Take it away Kasia!

Soooo…another year has passed and here we are again! Congratulations to the Unicorns at BMBR on their fifth anniversary! Keep on shining!

Let me join the celebration by bringing two offerings:

Firstly, a RAFFLECOPTER GIVEAWAY. I’m offering a set of the Order Chibi Keyrings as the main prize.

I will send Ervyn & Lochan—from The Mutt & The Highlander—in their totally adorbs, glossy and acrylic form to one lucky reader (giveaway open internationally). Yay! Three other readers will receive an e-book copy of my last release, Twenty-One Arrow Salute.

And secondly, an EXCERPT from WHEN I FIRST SAW RED, raw and unedited (*inserts her editor’s heart attack here*) Funny thing—I wrote the beginning of this story for BMBR’s fete last year. It started as a flash fiction, inspired by a picture prompt below. Therefore, it’s only right that I treat you to a tiny bit more of the story this year. If you haven’t read the original first chapter or wish to refresh your memory, have a gander here.

Busy with other projects, I abandoned Red and Sergeant Jhagán’s story for a while, only to pick it up again this summer.
I’m planning to release When I First Saw Red at some point this year. The exact date is still a mystery (yes, I’m awful like that). However, I’m hoping to be back here with the cover reveal sooner rather than later. If the Unicorns have me. *winks*
The novella will be part of a new series, titled Soldiers & Mercenaries. I envisage it as a collection of standalone stories set in my Order Universe and featuring—you’ve guessed it—various army types and hired swords.

You can check out my other fantasy stories on my website, where free short excerpts are available to read. My books are enrolled in Kindle Unlimited and can be purchased on Amazon. If you wish to stay informed about the Order Universe updates, consider subscribing to my newsletter.

Now it’s time to put the celebrational goods on the table! Best of luck in the giveaway and enjoy the snippet below.

Heat rose to the nape of my neck, but my uneasiness hadn’t affected my nether regions. I didn’t go on wasting time fretting over my performance. Oh fuck, no. I couldn’t wait to lay my hands on the cheeky bastard. To dig my fingers into his hips. To force him down, face-first into the…
I sucked in a deep breath. Before we got to the meat of the matter, the situation required a slight redefinition.
It took two strides for me to face him up-close. A childish pissing contest or not, the way I towered over him pleased me. “What I’d have of you, Red,” I hissed, pronouncing the last word in Imperial Common instead of using his Elven name, “is to stay quiet. And wiggle out of those togs like a flash.”
An ironic smile tugged at his lips, and he nodded as if in agreement with his himself. “Naturally, you’re a savage. As befits a soldier.”
I tried to reign in my temper along with my arousal. My endeavours had yielded no success. Frustrated, I reinforced my earlier instructions with the quirk of an eyebrow and a jerky gesture that never failed to work back in the barracks. That got His Royal Arseness’s attention.
Without looking away, he proceeded to peel the shirt off his shoulders, every deliberate move uncovering more and more of his pale flesh to my hungry gaze.
