Giveaway + Blog Tour: Why the Devil Stalks Death (Death and the Devil #2) by L.J. Hayward

Welcome author L.J. Hayward who's here on her Release Day of Why the Devil Stalks Death with a deleted scene! Find out more about this romantic suspense series and be sure to enter the giveaway of any of the books from the Death and the Devil series or a $15 Amazon gift card, if you prefer! Good luck!

Hello and welcome to my blog tour! I’m L.J. Hayward and I write the Death and the Devil series about Jack Reardon, a spy, and Ethan Blade, an assassin, two damaged but well-equipped men trying to survive their jobs and each other. In Why the Devil Stalks Death the guys are faced with a serial killer of exceptional skill and finding the Judge before they kill again might just be the thing that breaks Jack and Ethan apart . . .

The Cutting Room Floor

It’s not often I have whole scenes I delete from stories. Usually, when I’m cutting words, I do it on a word to word basis or partial scenes. And the exclusive deleted scene I have for you today isn’t really a whole scene, either. It cuts off just before the reveal, because the reveal is still in the book, just in a different place, at a different time, with a different catalyst. So, no spoilers. As the scene opens, Jack and Ethan have just made up after an argument and they’re enjoying the post make-up sex quiet . . .

Ethan’s hand slid up Jack’s side but this time, rather than move up to rest on his chest, it lingered at his waist. Jack was about to open his eyes and check if Ethan had fallen asleep when the hand moved again. Not to continue the caress, but to curl up, a small mound of Jack’s flesh caught for a moment, then let go. After a moment, it repeated the action.
“Hey,” Jack murmured softly. “That’s me you’re pinching.”
“Mm, I know.” He did it again, holding on for longer this time. “It’s just that this didn’t used to be here.”
Jack winced. “Yeah, okay. I’ve been doing a lot of sitting lately, all right? Haven’t got to the gym much. Or chased down bad guys.”
He felt Ethan’s wicked little smile against his skin. “I’m certain we can work it off, one way or another. If you wanted it gone, that is. Personally, I don’t mind.”
That made Jack open his eyes. He watched as Ethan gathered up his extra bit, held it, then let it go. Levering himself up on one elbow, Ethan leaned over and kissed the reddened skin.
“You don’t mind that I’m getting fat?” Jack asked, just to be clear.
Ethan meet his incredulous gaze. “You’re not fat, Jack. Far from it.” He ran his hand across Jack’s still defined and taut abdomen. “You’re perfect.”
Determined not to be distracted by pale skin against brown, Jack focused on Ethan’s face. “I’m not. You are. Look at you. All muscle and skin and not one millimetre of extra flesh. Except where it counts,” he added, leering in the direction of Ethan’s crotch.
Slapping Jack’s chest lightly, Ethan rolled onto his belly, hiding his clearly thickening dick. “I’m not perfect.”
“I suppose, in the sense that no one person could ever encompass an ideal concept of perfection, if everyone could ever agree on said concept, of course.”
Ethan smirked at him. “Yes, Mr. University Degree.”
“Shut up. But look at you. You have the most incredible body.” It was Jack’s turn to pinch his little roll. “You definitely don’t have this.”
            “But I want that.”
Jack looked at him sharply. He sounded completely sincere. “You do?”
Ethan blushed and ducked his face into the pillow. His words were muffled but understandable. “I love that you have it. It means that you have a life. You have the luxury to eat whatever you want, whenever you want. To indulge. You can go out and drink with your friends. You’re not always on guard, or hiding, or constantly worried that someone better, faster or stronger will come up behind you. You don’t have to imprison yourself behind a dozen locks just to relax. I’m hard. Stripped to nothing but bone and muscle.” His tone became bitter. “I am a weapon, nothing more.”
Normally, after such a pronouncement, Ethan wouldn’t want to be touched. He’d be wary and watchful, waiting to see how Jack responded. And he was this time, too. Face not lifting from the pillow, shoulders tense, hands curled into fists by his head. Clear signs to stay back.
Jack ignored them and rolled over, covering half of Ethan’s body with his own. Wrapped an arm around his neck and gently pulled his head closer, until they were cheek to cheek. Ethan was stiff against him. Not fighting to get free but poised to do so.
“You idiot.” Jack held on tighter when Ethan made to move away. “You’re not a weapon. You’re a man. An independent, resourceful, smart, fit, funny, beautiful, silly action book loving, speed freak and unrepentant car nut of a man.” He felt Ethan’s cheek press against his own as he smiled. “And hopefully, you’re my man.”
That got Ethan to lift his face. He blinked at Jack, his white eyes flicking between Jack’s, looking for the honesty behind the words.
“I am,” he whispered when he found it. “I want to be. I’m trying to be.”
Jack rested his forehead against Ethan’s. “Me too.”
They lay in silence again, gazing at each other until Ethan’s eyelids began to drift closed. When they slid shut and stayed shut, Jack studied him for a while longer, wondering who the bastard was who messed Ethan up so bad. Who made him think he was nothing more than a tool wielded to kill.
“Do you really want to know?”
Startled, Jack realised he’d spoken aloud. As he pulled back, Ethan opened his eyes and smiled sadly.
“I’ll tell you, if you really want to know.”
Surprise kept Jack mute. God. He’d often wondered about Ethan’s history, wanting desperately to know what had happened to turn him into the man Jack met in the desert. At the same time, he’d always feared knowing, unable to deny that it would change how he thought about Ethan. Perhaps how he felt about him. The Athens vision had angered him, but ultimately had only made him want to hold Ethan closer. Perhaps this wouldn’t be so bad.
“Or maybe not everything,” Ethan said gently. “How about just one thing? One thing I know you’re curious about.”
Shit. If Ethan told him about Athens, did Jack pretend to not already know? Or confess and assure him it didn’t change anything?
Untangling himself, Ethan sat up and reached for his feet. Bewildered, Jack watched as he hooked his fingers in the tops of his socks and, after a micro hesitation, pulled them off.

About the Author

L.J. Hayward has been telling stories for most of her life. Granted, a good deal of them have been of the tall variety, but who’s counting? Parents and teachers notwithstanding, of course. These days, the vast majority of her story telling has been in an honest attempt to create fun and exciting ways of entertaining others (and making money).

As such, she is still a mad (always provoked!) scientist in a dungeon laboratory (it has no windows. Seriously, the zombie apocalypse could be going on outside and she’d have nary a clue) who, on the rare occasions she emerges into the light, does so under extreme protest and with the potential hazard of bursting into flames under the southeast Queensland sun.

Giveaway + Blog Tour: One Word by Anne Barwell

Welcome Anne Barwell! She's making her clubhouse debut with BOTH a deleted scene and an excerpt of her new novel, One Word! Be sure to enter her giveaway of a $10 DSP gift card too! Good luck!

Thanks for hosting me today as part of my blog tour for One Word, the 3rd book in my Hidden Places series from Dreamspinner Press.

With One Word being a side novel to book one in the series—Cat’s Quill—I had to walk a fine line between writing a story that new readers could follow, but existing readers would still enjoy. There is a scene set in the library where Donovan and Ethan search for clues as to who Cathal is, and how he is connected to the stories of someone in Oakwood by the same name in 1918. That scene was originally a lot more detailed and showed a clue they did find, but in the finish I decided to cut some of it out. I’m sharing that missing bit with you now. ...

***

“Look at this.” Donovan held a copy of an old black and white photograph. Judging by the clothing worn by the people in the background, it had been taken nearly a hundred years ago. The building behind them stood in ruins, but it was the two men who were the subject of the photo that caught Ethan’s attention.

Neither of them seemed to have noticed the camera, although one of the men appeared to be looking at something or someone behind the photographer. They both wore long boots with their trousers tucked into them, and their hair was longer than was fashionable for the period. The man on the right wore a loose shirt—the top buttons were undone. His face was marked with soot, and held a child close to him, protecting her. She didn’t look to be more than five years old. A young boy, much the same age, clung to his leg.

“Who is that?” Ethan knew he’d seen both those men somewhere before, but it took him a few moments to make the connection. “Bloody hell. It’s—”

“Alice’s husband, Christian, and....” Donovan shook his head and turned the photograph over. “Library fire, 1918,” he read.

“It doesn’t give any names,” Ethan said. “May I?” He took the photograph from Donovan and studied it. “The man with the kids is his cousin, Cathal. I recognise him from the sketches Alice did, although I....”

“I thought those sketches might have been faked despite them supposedly being close ups of that painting hanging in the inn.” Donovan confirmed what Ethan was thinking. “The ones of Cathal then and now looked too similar. I knew the one Mikey drew was real as it’s definitely Cat and Tomas saw him draw it, but the one in 1918... No one looks that much like their great-whatever grandfather. It’s too much of a coincidence.” He peered more closely at the photograph, and then pointed to the man with the children. “That’s Cat, Ethan. He’s the man I met, I’m sure of it. I told myself it couldn’t be when I saw the sketch but...” He pointed to Cathal in the picture. “Even the style of clothing he’s wearing is similar.”

“That’s crazy,” Ethan said, “and makes no sense. How can it be the same man? This was taken nearly a hundred years ago. You saw Cathal last week.”

“I asked him whether he was a time traveller,” Donovan said. “He said he wasn’t but he claimed an old poetry book was his. I figured Mikey might have copied his great-grandmother’s style and drawn something for his granddad, and used Cathal as a model. He and Christian are quite similar in looks after all, but....”

“Photographs can be faked too,” Ethan pointed out, “but this is a library archive. Why would they? I don’t see the point.” He didn’t get any of this. Instead of finding answers, they’d discovered something that must be impossible.

“There is one other explanation,” Donovan said, “but as things go it’s out there.”

“More out there than your theory about time travel, and some bloke looking exactly like his great-grandfather?” Ethan asked.

“Yeah.” Donovan flushed. Whatever this new theory, it had to be a real doozy. “You know the stories of the ghost? What if I was wrong and I had seen him. Maybe that’s what we’re looking for and why we can’t find him.”

“You said you saw him and Tomas kissing?” While it was an interesting theory, Ethan could see the holes in it almost immediately. “And you touched him, right?”

“I didn’t but Tomas did, and he held that book I told you about in his hand. He was real, as real as you and I are now.”

“So he can’t be a ghost,” Ethan said firmly. “Ghosts are incorporeal.”

Or at least they were supposed to be, if the research he’d read about the subject was to be believed.

Donovan didn’t look as convinced. “Perhaps we need a description of this ghost,” he said. “Mikey’s dad lived at the inn before they sold it. I’ll ask Phoebe if we can take a copy of this photo. Even if he didn’t see the ghost, he might know of someone who has.”

“Maybe,” Ethan said. He doubted it was going to be that easy. God, what was wrong with him, discussing ghost sightings as though they were real? He’d never put much stock in any of that stuff. “I hate to admit this, but I’m thinking your time travel theory sounds more likely.”

“Yeah,” Donovan said, “and although Cat denied it, it doesn’t mean he was telling the truth. He spoke in riddles half the time and a lot of stuff he said didn’t make sense. It’s all about perspective.” He flicked through the photographs on either side, but there wasn’t anything there that was useful. It seemed to be the only photograph connected to the night of the fire. “Listen to us. I can’t believe I’m contemplating this.”

“That makes two of us.” Ethan placed a brief hand on Donovan’s shoulder, then removed it when he realised what he’d done. “Why don’t you go talk to Phoebe about making that copy? I’m going to hunt through the 1918 newspapers for anything else about the fire. If nothing else, I think we’ve found a place to start searching.” Someone had to have taken the photograph, and if there was one, there might be others stored somewhere else. “We’ll find this bloke, one way or another, whatever it takes.”

Blurb:

A Hidden Places Story
Ethan Leavitt arrives in the idyllic village of Oakwood to search for a missing friend. Having always prided himself on his ability to find rational explanations, Ethan’s trust in concrete evidence and logic is tested by the mystery of Oakwood and Tomas’s disappearance.

Donovan Campbell’s happy, sometimes flippant, exterior hides a past he’d rather forget. As he struggles with his memories and to hold on to the inn he owns with his best friend, the last thing Donovan needs is for some guy he’s only just met to start getting under his skin. When a bank robbery escalates into a dangerous situation, Donovan must embrace a part of himself he can no longer ignore in order to save a future that might never have the chance to exist.

Ethan learns that often the person you’re looking for is not the one you find. But have he and Donovan both realized that too late…?

Excerpt:

“I’m so sorry, Jane,” Ethan said, “and I apologize for my insensitivity earlier. It was completely out of line.”

She managed a shaky smile. “Thank you for being understanding. Good afternoon, gentlemen. I guess it’s a good thing that I have the day off, isn’t it?”

“I’m sorry for kicking you,” Donovan said after she’d left.

“I can be an insensitive jerk at times. Lord knows, I’ve been told that often enough.”

“Not always. You’ve got a kind side to you too.”

Ethan’s concern for Jane had been real enough, as was his mortification that he’d been rude once he’d seen that she was upset.

“You say that like it’s a good thing.” Ethan retrieved his napkin from the side of his plate and wiped his mouth. “Sometimes it’s not, you know. People take advantage. Not that I’m saying she is, but….” He sighed. “Just forget it, okay.”

“Okay.” Donovan wondered who had hurt Ethan and recently. He’d seen enough to connect the dots. “Lots of assholes in this world, unfortunately.”

“And some decent people too. Oakwood’s been good for reminding me of that.”

“Are you sure you’re okay to come to London with me tomorrow?” Donovan couldn’t help but think that something in their conversation had triggered Ethan’s reaction. He’d said Mitchell and Vincent were good friends. Perhaps it was this acquaintance he’d mentioned? The one who had introduced him to them.

“I’m looking forward to it.” Ethan glanced at Donovan’s empty plate. “Have you had enough lunch?”

“Yes, thanks. I was hungrier than I realized.” Donovan finished the last of his beer.

“I went to see the owner of the Chronicle the other day, but he was too busy to talk and suggested we meet briefly today instead. I’m hoping, as he’s been working at the newspaper a while, he can tell me some old stories about Oakwood that didn’t end up in print. You’re welcome to come if you’d like.”

“Thanks for the offer, but I need to do some work at the inn this afternoon. We had to replace some weatherboards a few months ago, and I need to get them painted before winter.” Donovan wished he could have said yes, but Heidi was stressing about it. If he didn’t get onto it soon, she’d be out there doing it herself, and she did enough already. Part of their agreement in taking on the inn was that they split the workload between them, and Donovan made sure he pulled his weight. “You’re okay to find your own way back?”

“Yes, I’ll be fine. Thanks for asking.” Ethan pushed back his chair and walked over to the counter to pay for their meal. “I’ll see you later, at the inn.”

“Okay. Sounds good.” Donovan didn’t follow him immediately but instead stayed at the table watching Ethan at the counter. His hair curled up slightly at the back, his jacket falling to mid-ass, not quite covering it. He had a very nice ass.

Bet he kisses well too.

Oh fuck. Donovan closed his eyes for a moment. Where the hell had that thought come from? He was falling for the guy, wasn’t he—falling for a guy who wasn’t interested and would be walking out of his life in a couple of days.

Donovan heard footsteps walking away. He opened his eyes just in time to see Ethan disappear out the door. It was time to leave and bury himself in the work he needed to get done. He stood and headed for the door, giving Eoin and his friends a wave as he passed their table.

He hadn’t missed the money the three men had given Craig or the grins they all wore.

Donovan groaned. Great, that was all he needed. The pub door slammed as he stalked through it. Yep, they were running another betting pool all right.

It wasn’t his fault they were wasting their time. They’d find that out soon enough for themselves.

Bio:

Anne Barwell lives in Wellington, New Zealand. She shares her home with two cats who are convinced that the house is run to suit them; this is an ongoing "discussion," and to date it appears as though the cats may be winning.

In 2008 she completed her conjoint BA in English Literature and Music/Bachelor of Teaching. She has worked as a music teacher, a primary school teacher, and now works in a library. She is a member of the Upper Hutt Science Fiction Club and plays violin for Hutt Valley Orchestra.

She is an avid reader across a wide range of genres and a watcher of far too many TV series and movies, although it can be argued that there is no such thing as "too many." These, of course, are best enjoyed with a decent cup of tea and further the continuing argument that the concept of "spare time" is really just a myth. She also hosts other authors, reviews for the GLBTQ Historical Site “Our Story” and Top2Bottom Reviews, and writes monthly blog posts for Authors Speak and Love Bytes.

Anne’s books have received honorable mentions four times and reached the finals three times in the Rainbow Awards. She has also been nominated twice in the Goodreads M/M Romance Reader’s Choice Awards—once for Best Fantasy and once for Best Historical.

Book Blurb:

Liam Young has a problem - he's booked a romantic holiday to Rio de Janeiro months ago, but when he breaks up with his boyfriend, all his plans fall apart. Not only is his dream holiday slipping through his fingers, but Liam is sick and tired of getting his heart broken.

Blaine Reed has a solution that can save Liam's plans. Recently divorced, Blaine needs a break, and a couple of stress-free weeks in Rio with a sexy guy like Liam sounds like heaven.
Liam and Blaine hit it off right from the start, becoming good friends even before they've left London. Despite their efforts to ignore the simmering attraction between them, it boils over when they end up sharing a room in one of the most romantic cities in the world.

Being together in Rio is easy, and it's exactly what Liam needs - no feelings, no drama, nobody getting hurt.

Until someone does.

When the holiday bubble bursts, it's up to them to find a way to be together outside of Rio's seductive magic.

What you want the takeaway of the book to be for readers: A Sip of Rio is a happy book about beach holidays, finding love in unexpected places and following your heart. I’d like readers to fall in love with Rio de Janeiro as much as I did, and crave a beach holiday of their own. And maybe, just maybe, gather the courage to do what their heart tells them just this once.

Quotes from Teodora Kostova about the book: I fell in love with Rio de Janeiro when I first went there a couple of years ago and it was inevitable I’d set a book there some day. A Sip of Rio is that book. It’s romantic, sexy, maybe a bit melancholy, and full of hope. It’s a book you can relax by the pool with, a cocktail in hand, and a smile on your face.

Select brief quotes from the book:

Blaine would always protect Liam’s heart, even at the expense of his own.

***

“You’re falling in love right now, aren’t you?” Liam said, his camera clicking relentlessly.

Blaine turned to face him, his eyes sliding past Liam to the view of Copacabana beach
behind him, and then back on Liam’s face.

“Yeah,” he finally said, feeling his cheeks flushing. “I think I am.”

***

But the nagging thought at the back of his mind that this was all a fantasy, a screwed up
version of reality that would come crashing down on them the moment they set foot
in London, remained. What they had here was easy. It was fun and romantic and magical.

But it couldn't last.

Could it?

Excerpt:

“It tastes like Rio,” Liam said, and for some reason that made him a bit sad. Who was going to make him cocktails that tasted like Rio when they were gone in a few days? “It’s sweet and bitter at the same time, but it’s still beautiful and kinda addictive. I haven’t finished this one and I’m already thinking of ordering another one.”
Diego seemed satisfied with his answer, if his wide toothy grin was any indication.

“Well done, amigo, that was exactly what I was going for.” Diego leaned on his elbows on the counter, moving closer to Liam as if to whisper something conspiratorially. Liam met him half way, his head turning a little to the side as he listened to Diego, but his eyes held Blaine’s who was watching them with a frown. “But be careful,” Diego whispered. “A sip of Rio is all it takes. You may never want to leave.”

Deleted scene from Sip of Rio

Blaine fiddled with his phone as he lay on the bed, waiting for Liam to come out of the shower so that they could get dressed and go out to eat. All that sun and sand and swimming was exhausting, and he found he was getting hungry way more often than back in London.

Or maybe it was the insanely hot sex he and Liam had at every opportunity?
In any case, Blaine was starving.

The bathroom door opened, releasing a cloud of steam. Liam came out of it, a towel wrapped loosely around his hips, still dripping all over the floor.

“God, I needed that,” he said, flopping down on the bed, making the sheets wet.
Impulsively, Blaine propped himself on his elbow and snapped a picture of Liam lying next to him.

“What are you doing?” Liam asked, his eyes closed and his arm thrown over them.
Blaine stared at the photo and admired the tan lines showing over the loosened towel. Liam’s skin was soft and perfect even when he was pale as a ghost, but Blaine had a thing for tan lines, and Liam’s in particular drove him crazy. A flash of memory burst behind his eyes from last night when he’d fucked Liam from behind over the sofa in their suite, his pale ass in the air, his skin reddening every time Blaine slapped it.

“I’m taking a photo for your Instagram fans,” Blaine said, the reply taking him out of the sexy memory.

“Do not post that photo on Instagram!” Liam said, suddenly sounding awake and ready to tackle Blaine for the phone.

Predicting his move, Blaine held the phone away, laughing as Liam climbed on top of him trying to get it. The towel slipped away and Blaine had a very naked – and very delicious – Liam struggling to reach the phone in Blaine’s hand.

“A-ha!” Exclaimed Liam as he snatched the phone from Blaine and jumped off the bed, frantically tapping the screen.

Blaine sat up in the bed. “Please don’t delete it!”

Liam paused, raising an eyebrow at Blaine.

“I’m not having such intimate pictures published on Instagram.”

“I was kidding!”

“How do I know you’re not going to publish it the moment I give you the phone back? You’re obsessed with getting likes.”

“Because I don’t want such intimate pictures of you on Instagram.”

If the crease between Liam’s brows was anything to go by, he wasn’t convinced.

“I want to keep the photo for personal use,” Blaine said, smirking.

“Whatever,” Liam said and threw him the phone back, turning around to grab clothes from the dresser, but not before Blaine saw the smile appearing on his lips.

Author Bio:

Hi, my name is Teodora and I live in London with my husband and my son. I've been writing ever since I can remember, but it became my full time job in 2010 when I decided that everything else I've tried bores me to death and I have to do what I've always wanted to do, but never had to guts to fully embrace. I've been a journalist, an editor, a personal assistant and an interior designer among other things, but as soon as the novelty of the new, exciting job wears off, I always go back to writing. Being twitchy, impatient, loud and hasty are not qualities that help a writer, because I have to sit alone, preferably still, and write for most of the day, but I absolutely love it. It's the only time that I'm truly at peace and the only thing I can do for more than ten minutes at a time - my son has a bigger attention span than me.
When I'm procrastinating, I like to go to the gym, cook Italian meals (and eat them), read, listen to rock music, watch indie movies and True Blood re-runs. Or, in the worst case scenario, get beaten at every Nintendo Wii game by a very inventive kid
