Can Austin learn to love the opposite who attracts him?

Austin Russell doesn’t belong at a small school like Glynn Harber. He's meant to be a high flyer in finance not a book-keeping bursar. Now there's only one renovation project left to budget, it’s time he toughened his soft heart and got back to climbing the corporate ladder.

The truth is he’d rather climb Maisie Dymond’s father.

That urge doesn’t add up—Dom Dymond is his polar opposite—but when a near-miss brings them together, Austin discovers there’s more below his laid-back surface, especially as Dom’s determined to win the bid for the school's last rebuilding project.

Working in proximity means Austin can’t deny that they're opposites who don’t only attract, they combust whenever they’re close. Telling himself it's only a fling doesn’t ring true when Dom opens up about what keeps him in Cornwall. He’s there to heal his fractured family, and he wants Austin as part of it.

That openness makes Austin want to share too, but will Dom still feel the same attraction once he knows what drives Austin to keep climbing his ladder?

♥ Austin is the fourth standalone novel in the Learning to Love series. Set in England's glorious county of Cornwall, each book has a fulfilling happily ever after. ♥

Can Luke learn to love the man who left him?

Headmaster Luke Lawson is committed to saving his boarding school before a cash crisis sinks it. He’ll do anything to keep it afloat, even if that means accepting help from the man who broke his heart at uni.

Nathan’s offer to teach for free could be a blessing as long as Luke can harden his bruised heart. That’s tough when they’ll need to share living quarters and have a history of hook-ups. But Luke knows being compatible in bed isn’t enough to build trust. It can’t be when Nathan has always left him before morning.

This time around, it feels different. Nathan's work overseas has changed him. Touched him. Opened a locked chamber in his heart that Luke is beginning to think must have been bruised in the past too.

As pressure mounts, can Luke trust that Nathan’s committed this time—not only to his school but to a shared future with him long term?

♥ Featuring a second chance at first love in close proximity, Luke is the third standalone novel in the Learning to Love series. Set in England's glorious county of Cornwall, each book has a fulfilling happily ever after. ♥

CW: Non-explicit mentions of childhood anxieties.

Opposites attract in this low-angst romance filled with British snark and humour.

Life should be a breeze for a playboy like Charles Heppel. As the third son of an earl, he lives for the moment, partying and playing. Settling down isn’t for him. Not when London is full of beautiful men who he hasn’t one-and-done yet.

To escape his family’s nagging, Charles applies for a temp job that matches his playful skill set. A role in a Cornish classroom could be his until the summer, if Charles meets two conditions: he must move in with the headmaster’s best friend, and teach him to be happy.

Living with Hugo should be awkward. Charles is a free spirit, but Hugo’s a man of faith, with morals. A man who almost took holy orders before disaster changed his direction. Only far from being a chore, Charles finds that making Hugo happy soon becomes his passion.

Together, they share physical and emotional first times. Ones that change Charles, touching his soul. He wants Hugo for longer than they have left, but learning to love with his heart, not just his body, will take a leap of faith from Charles — in himself as well as Hugo.

New from Con Riley, Charles: Learning to Love is the first novel in a series based at Glynn Harber, a very special boarding school set in England’s glorious Cornwall.

♥ This shared-world series starts with Charles and Hugo, but each book follows a different couple in their own standalone novel, with a fulfilling happily ever after. Want to hear more from Charles? He stole the show in His Haven. ♥

Opposites attract when Keir is once jilted, twice shy...

Keir Brodie is a lawyer with good reason for his trust issues. A year after his groom didn’t show up at their wedding, he’s still heartsore and hurting. Work has been his saviour, but a new project sets alarm bells ringing — his favourite client wants to buy a house for someone Keir thinks is a liar.

Mitch’s nice-guy act doesn’t fool Keir, and he can’t let sparks flying when they’re together distract him. That’s just the flare of opposites attracting, not the lifelong connection he misses. Besides, no amount of passion is worth risking his heart, especially with someone only down for onetime hook-ups.

Their shared project chips away at Keir’s first impressions. As the truth, and Keir, unravel, Mitch pieces him back together in ways Keir couldn’t have predicted. Trusting Mitch with more than his client’s money will take a leap of faith, in himself, and in a man Keir hopes won’t leave him waiting.

Will Jason’s third time as a best man lead to first-time love for Vanya?

After fleeing violence in Moscow, student teacher Vanya Petrov winds up lonely in a run-down London hostel. At least visiting the Bond Street store where his roommate works lets him practice his English, but as Vanya's vocabulary expands, so does his isolation, especially when he sees happy couples planning their perfect weddings.

According to Jason Balfour, weddings are a waste of time and money. After all, he’s been best man for his brother twice already. Saying that a third marriage will end in divorce too leads to an angry ultimatum: to save his relationship with his brother, Jason must meet his fiancée, at last, and make a good first impression.

Jason’s need to dress to impress brings him and Vanya together. Language is no barrier to falling in love with the young and fragile Russian, and neither is their age difference. But Vanya’s bruised soul carries secrets that could rip them apart. As the wedding draws near, Vanya must confess, and soon, or risk losing Jason—his own best man in Britain.

R *A Reader Obsessed* - 4 Hearts

This was my first Con Riley and I’m quite the happy reader!

What’s not to love about a traumatized immigrant from Russia (a virgin, no less) who falls for an older man? Not much. Not much at all.

First you have sweet Vanya, who’s barely survived a violent attack and is desperately trying to gain British asylum. For now he’s safe, but until he’s deemed officially legal, he cannot earn an honest wage. Thus, Vanya is barely scraping by; he and his friends struggling to stay safe and save up for a better place to live. Since Vanya is in this waiting limbo, he often hangs out at his roommate’s workplace, an upscale department store. Through a series of events, he’s sorta mistaken for a personal shopper and is hired by a rough and tumble man who’s in need of a makeover. If caught earning money, Vanya could be deported, but his desperate situation makes it very hard to say no to some easily earned cash.

Enter Jason. When he voices his objections to his brother’s 3rd pending marriage, his lack of tact gets him in trouble. Since he’s gone too far, Jason has to show that he’s trying to get to know his future sister-in-law to make amends and hence, needs to make a very good impression. Insert Vanya here. Is this situation really plausible or reasonable? Not really. However, it somehow works, and thus a slow burn begins between these two.

I admit age gaps can easily turn me off (and this one is a whopping 22 years), but when done right or when the gap is not the main issue, it’s a nice added touch. Of course, the main dramatic bomb hanging over our heads is Vanya’s secret that he isn’t some big wig fancy shopper, and though he knows he must tell the truth, he so desperately hangs onto whatever happiness he can get with Jason before he can make himself do so. Of course, the hole deepens, making it harder and harder to speak up. Honestly, I could’ve done without this drama, but it is what it is.

Overall though, this had a lot of what I like in a romance -twisty doubt and insecurity, all entwined in some great tender UST. The heat level is decent with some delicious buildup, and despite being a bit sparse on the details, it was still plenty sexy. Vanya is also a character to root for. He’s had it rough and has lost much. He aches for his old life and family, but Vanya is not broken. He’s optimistic, hopeful, determined, and takes pleasures in the small things that reaffirm his tenuous freedom. Jason in turn, is protective, caring, as well as vulnerable too because of a rocky past. He sees Vanya’s genuine kindness and honesty, and wants for the first time, in a long time, to have someone to care for, to have someone notice him and his details and to return the favor.

It really was a pleasure watching these two fall in love.

So yes, this was a great romance despite the inevitable obvious conflict, and I unexpectedly and quickly breezed right through - a huge indicator to me of just how much I enjoyed this!

Thanks to the author/publisher for a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Sara - 5 Hearts

I once said I loved Con Riley’s words so much I would marry them and that hasn’t changed. I have read everything the author has written and I have yet to find one of her books I haven’t fallen in love with.

Be My Best Man is no exception to my marriage vow and right now, I want to hug the hell out of her. The author took on the job of tackling such a political climate with respect and responsibility to these troubling times but not weighing the book down with it and giving us a wonderful romance full of hope. It’s a balance that compliments the romance as well as Jason and Vanya complement one another.

Ugh. Where to start this review? Jason and Vanya meet at a department store where Jason is waiting to hear back from his foster brother, Andrew and Vanya is hoping to improve his conversational English while hanging out with his best friend and roommate Kaspar. Jason mistakes Vanya as a salesperson and after Vanya suggests a few ties that Jason doesn’t buy, they both make a lasting impression on one another.

Told through the dual POV’s of both our MC’s we learn right away the trouble Jason is going through with his foster brother Andrew, that they had words and Andrews accidentally gave Jason a black eye. But Jason kinda deserved it. I mean, he said some horrible things about the young lady Andrew intends to marry and then Jason ends up being in the exact same situation so karma works in this sense.

But Vanya, goodness. We meet Vanya in the immigration centre as he waits to hear the status of case and the asylum he seeks in Britain. Vanya has left his homeland of Russia after being assaulted and disowned from his family and is now in the process of starting a new life in London. Without a Visa, there isn’t much he can do until he is legal and that includes getting an actual job. Vanya has left a full life behind, he was almost done with classes to become and elementary aged teacher and meeting Jason is a chance at something he can’t let slip away.

You see, Jason assumes with how Vanya looks, dresses and his ability to pick out a tie in a Bond Street department store that Vanya is a personal shopper. Considering Andrew has quietly demanded that Jason clean up his appearance to impress his fiancée leads Jason to track down Vanya and offer him the paid task of dressing Jason smartly. It’s an opportunity for Vanya to earn money under the table and help save for a real place to live with Kaspar.

Wow. There is so much in this story to talk about but it would be spoiling it. The level of emotions the book pulls you through are stunning and angst ridden that I couldn’t stop reading and finished this book in a single Sunday. We go through a lot with Jason and Vanya both together and on their own. They both have demons to face, regrets to leave behind and a chance at a future with someone that is so stunning, they are blinded to any fault that cracks the surface of their romantic bubble.

I really liked Jason. I felt for him as he tells the story about moving in with Andrew and his mum as a foster child and how they accepted him fast and fully into their little family. He will do whatever he can to not hurt Andrew and while he’s made assumptions about Andrew’s fiancée Chantel, Jason is forced to eat one extra-large piece of humble pie as he begins to fall for Vanya, as the brothers find themselves in similar relationships.

Watching Vanya and Jason go from a business transaction to friends then lovers was beautiful. This is slow burn romance that focuses on the importance of family which if you’ve read a Con Riley book is always a central focus. I love that the author does that, she infuses love and acceptance of every kind into her work and it’s permeates from the page and you absorb it through your pores. It’s impossible to read this book and not feel. Try it. I dare you.
I found the way Vanya goes about learning English to be adorable and admirable. I can’t imagine having to learn…everything in a new way how he must to acclimate to a new country. Heck, I have a hard time changing how I take my coffee but Vanya finds intriguing ways to learn not only English, but British slang as well so he can truly converse with anyone and help his asylum case.

So while Jason and Vanya are becoming closer, Vanya is keeping “white lies” about his alien status, where he lives and why he is in the country from Jason. In the grand scheme of things, these are important things but the way the men feel about one another, the lessons they learn through their love and others around them is the real heart of this romance.

Now that’s not saying this isn’t one hell of a sexy read, because it is. The age gap between Jason and Vanya makes this delicious and when you throw in Vanya’s inexperience, it’s time to dig in and get it on. Yeah, the intimacy mixed with the sex that give whispered declarations, mirrored encounters and even first kisses will give you so many feels, you‘ll want to go back and read them again. I know I did.

But this book… it’s so wonderful I can’t describe it. The love that Jason and Vanya find is gorgeous. The love that Andrew and Chantel find that builds and repairs bridges is lovely and Kaspar and Anna lend another love story to the bunch and it’s all so amazing. This book is full of so much love and hope among the political background of Brexit and what’s happening to gay men in other countries that it was a blessing to read.

That epilogue just about killed me with feelings but I adored the hell out of it.

Be My Best Man is multicultural romance among a politically charged state of being. It’s a love story that defies the odds of finding love in a hopeless place and gives the reader a glimpse inside the life of a displaced man seeking asylum in a country that currently doesn’t want his kind.

That cover is amazing showcasing the wispy, vulnerable yet determined nature that is Vanya down to the color choice for reasons you’ll get when you read the book and I am in love with all of it.

Con Riley has done it again and my marriage to her words must begin with a ransom because, how freaking adorable was that?

Review: Must Like Spinach by Con Riley

Jon’s future in New York seems bright. He’s on the corporate fast track as an executive problem solver, but somehow he can’t help feeling hollow. Yearning for a life spent outdoors makes no sense if he wants to flourish in this city, nor does losing his cool with clients when they make bad decisions. Only leaving the East Coast behind for three months can save his business reputation.

His exile in Seattle has unexpected upsides. Jon’s rented home has a garden where his true passions blossom. It’s overgrown yet idyllic—perfect if he didn’t have to share it with another tenant. Tyler might be as cute as hell, and their landlady adores him, but Jon can’t let himself fall for someone who seems lazy.

Three months could be enough time to see Tyler clearly, but choosing which to nurture long-term—love or a business career—might take Jon longer than one summer.

After he messes up with a client in New York, Jon is sent on a consulting gig to Seattle. Looking for a place to rent, Jon comes across a tiny apartment only has one thing going for it - the large garden. He decides to take the apartment, convinced by the garden, but also because he worries that the elderly landlady is being taken advantage of by another tenant - Tyler.

Jon and Tyler start off on the wrong foot. But as Jon learns more about Tyler, he finds that his early impressions were wrong. Tyler has a love for life that Jon hasn’t felt in years, and slowly Jon realizes that his life, both professional and personal, is less than perfect. But he’ll have to convince Tyler, who hasn’t had the best luck in love, to take a chance on him.

Early on, I had mixed opinions of both Jon and Tyler. Tyler was a bit of a mystery, because we only see him through the negative impressions that Jon has, from whose POV the book is told. But Jon wasn’t winning any points either, with his taciturn attitude.

It isn’t until Jon began spending time in the garden that I got to see what was behind the public corporate persona. As much as I dislike gardening in real life, I ended up enjoying when Jon was in his element, because he was able to let his guard down and let his worries fade away.

description

I’m a sucker for an opposites-attract romance, and Tyler and Jon are certainly two very different men. Jon is well-polished, career-driven, and pretty uptight at the beginning of the book. Tyler is more care-free, taking life as it comes, and chose his career because he loves what does, even if it doesn’t pay much.

The one thing that unites them is their care for Peggy, their elderly landlady. Jon and Tyler can put aside their mutual distrust for Peggy, and that’s the beginning of their relationship. I really liked seeing how their attitudes towards each other slowly changed, and how they revealed more of themselves to one another bit by bit.

Also, I was a big fan of Peggy and her not-so-subtle maneuvering after she decided that Jon and Tyler would be perfect for each other. She’s a sweet old lady who wouldn’t hurt a fly, but looks out for her boys.

This is a slow-burn romance, one that only builds in small increments as the book moves along. It was very sweet seeing Jon fall for Tyler little by little, and how his hope that Tyler would reciprocate grew. Tyler does eventually come around and give in to his heart’s desire, but it takes a while for him to get there.

By the end, there’s no question that Tyler and Jon are deeply in love, and are more than ready to build their future together.

While the romance was slow-paced, what really bogged the book down at times was the focus on Jon’s work. I just wasn’t a fan of all of the business planning and company politics, particularly because it was given so much page time. It distracted from Tyler and Jon’s relationship, so I could have done with much less of it.

Overall, ‘Must Like Spinach’ is an enjoyable read. If you’re looking for a slow-burn and low-drama romance, and don’t mind following an MC around in his place of work, I’d give this book a try.

Con Riley lives on the wild and rugged Devonshire coast, with her head in the clouds, and her feet in the Atlantic Ocean.

Injury curtailed her enjoyment of outdoor pursuits, so writing fiction now fills her free time. Love, loss, and redemption shape her romance stories, and her characters are flawed in ways that makes them live and breathe.

When not people watching, or wrangling her own boy band of teen sons, she spends time staring at the sea from her kitchen window. If you see her, don't disturb her—she’s probably thinking up new plots.

Review: True Brit by Con Riley

Winning the United Kingdom’s favorite singing contest is a challenge for half-Afghani Pasha Trueman. He doesn’t have the best voice, but success would be life-changing. His strategy is simple—he’ll make the British public love him.

Ex-soldier Ed Britten has a different agenda. Winning means he’ll keep a promise made after a deadly Afghan ambush. His voice is his weapon, but he leaves his heart unguarded.

Ed and Pasha’s discovery that the contest isn’t a fair fight calls for creative tactics. Staging a fake love story could bring victory, only there’s more at stake than the prestigious first prize. If winning means surrendering each other, they could both end up losing.

 #TrueBrit5Ever #TrueLove

Pasha and Ed are both contestants in a British singing competition/reality show. Ya know, where it's not actually based on reality, but instead on what the producers want the public to think. Ed and Pasha haven't spoken much and are nearing the end of the competition, when they overhear the producers plans for them, and it doesn't involve winning.

Pasha's solution to get them on top is perfect! Mostly because it involves them kissing.

They think their "relationship" is all for show. That they're just doing it for the cameras and to get the votes in order to make it to the end. But the chemistry. OMG, the chemistry. Yeah, they weren't fooling anyone, except maybe each other.
"Straight guys don't melt like I do when other men whisper in their ear. You did it to me so often, I thought you were doing it on purpose."
Gah! *dies*

They had me melting into a puddle of gooey goodness.

But, it all started just for show. Pasha wanted the votes and he got them. They were shipped and hashtagged and Pasha's set-up worked. Up until they became closer then they had originally planned.

I loved the whole fandom surrounding these guys and #TrueBrit. And it made me think... is my favorite ship all for show? *hyperventilates* No! No way. No, they are not. They are in love just like Ed and Pasha!

This story was easy and cute, different from what I've read from Con Riley in the past. The writing is still the same superb quality, just without the angst. There were some serious issues and underlying themes, but the story as a whole was had a lighter feel. There was an abundance of happy sighs and swoons from my corner. Their chemistry was crazy and they were seriously cute. Also, they were totally sexy. Quiet and reserved Ed isn't so quiet and reserved. Heh.

True Brit is Con Riley's first self-pub and the first (that I've read) that's on the fluffier side. Not completely fluff, but you'll be smiling the entire time. I dare you not to.

Anniversary Shenanigans: Author Visit & Giveaway: Con Riley

Con Riley is here! Have you read her Salvage books yet? You neeeeeeeeeeeed to! Lucky for you, she's giving away a copy of winner's choice from her backlist. And there's MORE! We have an excerpt from her upcoming, True Brit.

BMBR: What are your favorite M/M themes?
CR: I’m pretty open to most themes, but I love reading about men who own their flaws, and I adore it when characters get a second chance at love. I’m particularly fond of ‘gay for you’ stories — add a slow burn, and some hurt/comfort to the storyline and I’m a happy reader. My ideal book would encompass all of these factors – people drawn to each other, no matter their past relationships or mistakes, because love trumps all. I’d love any recs readers might like to pass on.

BMBR: What books do you consider Desert Island Keepers?
CR: That’s easy.

1. The Falls Chance Ranch series by Rolf and Ranger. I started reading these books expecting a little bit of spanky kink, but they turned out to be about so much more. I read them over and over. Although the books are set in America, perhaps it’s the fact that the authors are British like me that makes their writing so accessible. The setting is so well drawn that I like to think the ranch is real, and that I can visit it one day to share a cup of tea in the kitchen with Paul, and then watch Riley, Flynn, Dale, and Jake wash off a day’s dust in the river. Simple pleasures, told beautifully. Even writing this little summary has me tearing up, and that’s why these books are keepers.

2.The Lost and Founds series by Edmond Manning. This series is, in my opinion, the absolute best in recent MM publishing. The talent and the heart in these books stagger me. They are utterly wonderful, full of love, humour, and slivers of utterly perfect heartbreak that make me want to snap my writing pencil.

BMBR: What's your go-to tasty beverage?
CR: Tea! I am a true Brit, in that respect. I run on strongly brewed tea, milk, no sugar.

BMBR: Do you have any secret talents? Inquiring minds want to know.
CR: I have a complete inability to care about ‘stuff’. I recently downsized from a very large home to a very small one. Culling possessions was a relief, and I now have only what I need. Life is simple when you only keep the things that matter. I have my kids, my computer, and a comfy chair to read in. I’m a lucky woman.

BMBR: If you had to choose to be one magical beast, what would it be and why? (you don't have to say unicorn...but we won't say neigh either)
Con: Ha! I’d choose to be Reepicheep from The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Small package; huge heart. I have a fanfic work in progress that incorporates a similar character. The summary of that story is, “Patrick’s mouse is magic,” and that’s pretty much the whole plot. LOL

BMBR: Who's your favorite porn star?
CR: I don’t make a point to seek out porn. It finds me on Tumblr. ;) However, Samuel Colt (@MrSamuelColt on Twitter) is the only porn star I’ve even sent fan mail after he wrote a thoughtful piece on open relationships and being in love. He wrote back to me, so that makes him number one in my book. He’s also has beautiful eyes, so there’s that, too.

BMBR: Do you have author envy? Whose words do you read and think, "GAH, I wish I wrote that!"?
CR: Edmond Manning seems to write fearlessly. There’s no standard MM format to his work, and I really appreciate that he trusts readers to expect more than the same old same old. Sarah Black writes similarly in that every single story I’ve read of hers provokes real emotion I identify with. I ‘hear’ real lives lived in her words way beyond the text on my e-reader. Jordan Castillo Price can do no wrong. Again, this is a writer who seems driven by story first above everything else. Her characters are very real to me, every time, in every book, and that’s a gift.

BMBR: Any new projects you're currently working on?
CR: This is where I have to give a shout-out to the best writing group in the world: Jay Northcote, Annabelle Jacobs, N.R. Walker, Teegan Loy, T.M. Franklin, and Posy Roberts.

Their relentless bullying support means that I just completed my sixth novel, during a year I hadn’t expected to even finish a short story.

This time, I’ve written a book set in Britain about two guys, Ed and Pasha, who have every reason in the world not to fall in love. Its working title is True Brit, and I hope I’ve captured the spirit of my diverse nation as well as Ed and Pasha’s journey from enemies to lovers.

True Brit is about a contest that has a single prize. Winning means the world to both men for very different reasons. Working together could get them to the final, but Ed’s background as a British soldier and Pasha’s Afghan heritage add layers of pressure.

This excerpt reveals one of their strategies for success.
“And I don’t think that verbal affection on its own will cut it either. We should… We should probably touch. A lot. But naturally, you know? As if we have a hard time keeping our hands off each other.”
“Like this?” Ed reached for the half-full mug Pasha clutched to his chest, and made sure both of his hands covered Pasha’s for an extended heartbeat as he slowly took it from him.
“Yeah.”
“And like this?” Ed pushed the strands of hair that covered his eyes to one side. “Hi.”
This time Pasha slowly smiled instead of answering.
“And what about if we hold hands?” Ed awkwardly threaded his fingers through Pasha’s. “Is that too much, do you think?”
Pasha shook his head. “No.” He cleared his throat. “No, that’s exactly what I meant by natural.” He tugged his fingers away, and wiped his palms on his trousers as if they were sweaty. “You’re taking to this much faster than I thought you would.”
There wasn’t much Ed wouldn’t do to get to the finals. “It’s all about motivation,” he explained. “And repetition.” He grabbed Pasha’s hand again and looked carefully where their fingers knit together. “Like stripping down a rifle and putting it back together. You do it over and over until it stops feeling clumsy.” He turned their joined hands over, studying them from another angle. “And then you do it some more.”
Ed let Pasha’s hand fall. He didn’t look down at all when he next reached out. Their hands slid together easily—a key snug in its lock. “There.” Ed held on for longer this time, and Pasha returned the steady pressure.
They were both quiet. Traffic was a constant rumble that kept them company, and somewhere close by there was the faint sound of music.
“Can I sit with you at dinner?” Ed asked. He smiled when Pasha nodded. “Then maybe we could find somewhere out of range of the cameras. Talk about how to play tomorrow.”
Pasha silently agreed again.
Ed twisted his wrist to look at his watch, Pasha’s hand still firmly in his. “We should go and join the others.”
Still Pasha said nothing.
“Is this okay?” Ed squeezed his fingers.
“Yeah,” Pasha blinked a few times. “Yeah. It’s perfect.”
“Let’s go, then.” When Ed tugged at his hand one more time, Pasha followed where he led.

True Brit will be my first self-published title. I’m aiming for a December/January release date, and I can’t wait for you all to read it!
