Hockey is Gabe Martin's life. Dante Baltierra just wants to have some fun on his way to the Hockey Hall of Fame. Falling for a teammate isn't in either game plan.

But plans change.

When Gabe gets outed, it turns his careful life upside-down. The chaos messes with his game and sends his team headlong into a losing streak. The last person he expects to pull him through it is Dante.

This season isn’t going the way Dante thought it would. Gabe’s sexuality doesn’t faze him, but his own does. Dante’s always been a “what you see is what you get” kind of guy, and having to hide his attraction to Gabe sucks. But so does losing, and his teammate needs him, so he puts in the effort to snap Gabe out of his funk.

He doesn’t mean to fall in love with the guy.

Getting involved with a teammate is a bad idea, but Dante is shameless, funny, and brilliant at hockey. Gabe can’t resist. Unfortunately, he struggles to share part of himself that he’s hidden for years, and Dante chafes at hiding their relationship. Can they find their feet before the ice slips out from under them?

Ryan Wright’s new hockey team is a dumpster fire. He expects to lose games—not his heart.

Ryan’s laid-back attitude should be an advantage in Indianapolis. Even if he doesn’t accomplish much on the ice, he can help his burned-out teammates off it. And no one needs a friend—or a hug—more than Nico Kirschbaum, the team’s struggling would-be superstar.

Nico doesn’t appreciate that management traded for another openly gay player and told them to make friends. Maybe he doesn’t know what his problem is, but he’ll solve it with hard work, not by bonding with the class clown.

It’s obvious to Ryan that Nico’s lonely, gifted, and cracking under pressure. No amount of physical practice will fix his mental game. But convincing Nico to let Ryan help means getting closer than is wise for Ryan’s heart—especially once he unearths Nico’s sense of humor.

Will Nico and Ryan risk making a pass, or will they keep missing 100 percent of the shots they don’t take?

Excerpt from WINGING IT

Dante waited in the lobby, curled into a chair that wasn’t quite big enough to be comfortable. He kept his back to the flow of people and his nose buried in his phone. Any other night, sure, he would be happy to sign autographs. Tonight… his brain was going to endlessly replay the scene he’d just walked in on.

How had he not known Gabe was into men? It seemed obvious now. Of course he never picked women up in bars or brought a girlfriend to a team event. Dante felt stupid for not noticing.

Somehow Dante had stumbled onto a huge secret.

And now he had to work out what to do about it.

First, though, apparently he was going to think about Gabe’s broad palm on his partner’s chest. Gabe was a big guy—two inches taller than Dante, even if Dante was more solidly built. His partner had been clinging to Gabe’s muscular shoulder.

He should stop thinking about it, but his brain was trying to fill in details. Where had Gabe’s other hand been? Had it been placed on his partner’s thigh? Had he been putting his weight on it to steady himself? Or maybe he’d used it to tilt the man’s face to the right angle.

Dante exhaled sharply. This was really, really not his business. Dwelling on it would not do him any favors. He needed to pretend everything was normal. And obsessing about your teammate feeling up some guy—and kissing, can’t forget the kissing—was not that.

So. Normal. He’d been sexiled by a roommate. That was fine! It had happened before. Today, actually. He hoped Yorkie was having a better night than Gabe.

Most importantly, sexiling was normal.

Was it hot in here?

Footsteps jarred him out of his spiral, and he looked up to see Gabe walking toward him, head down, shoulders hunched. He didn’t exactly have the look of the freshly laid about him.

Fuck.

Or, like, probably not.

Gabe dropped into the chair across from him. He was loudly projecting that he would rather stand in front of fifty of Kitty’s slap shots than have this conversation.

At least they were on even footing in that respect.

Dante put his phone away. “So, uh, sorry for cockblocking you.” Even if it’s kind of your fault. Who doesn’t use the Do Not Disturb sign? Why didn’t you tell me to pound rocks when I asked to share?

Considering the circumstances, he kept a lid on these criticisms. He could bring them up later, when Gabe didn’t look like he was about to puke all over the hotel lobby.

“I wasn’t expecting it to be a problem,” Gabe said. He slumped farther, but Dante thought his shoulders were relaxing too. “Did you strike out or something?”

“Sort of. We passed her ex on the way back to her place and she made it like ten more feet before she burst into tears. So we stopped at Dairy Queen for ice cream, and then she went to the bathroom and fixed her makeup and we took a selfie for her Instagram, and I came back here.”

The color returned to Gabe’s face and he met Dante’s gaze for the first time since that hideously awkward moment upstairs. “Guess neither of us is getting laid tonight,” he said, a little tentatively, like he wasn’t sure Dante would laugh.

“I won’t tell if you won’t.”

“Deal,” Gabe said. The lines of tension in his face disappeared under a relieved half smile.

Good. Dante was glad they’d settled that. “Great.” He yawned. “So can we go upstairs now? I’ve had just enough booze and ice cream to make me sleepy.”

When they got up to the hotel room, Dante said, “I wish you’d told me you liked guys.” His shoes thunked dully against the wall as he kicked them off. “I wouldn’t have tried so hard to hook you up with chicks last season.” Or last week.

Gabe stared at Dante’s shoes. Then he lined his own up neatly under the desk. “It’s not something I advertise.”

“No shit.” Dante shimmied out of his jeans.

After a beat, Gabe said, “You’re being really cool about this.”

Dante sat in the desk chair. He had a habit of saying the first thing that came to mind, and right now that was Actually, I’m kind of freaking out. He needed to take his time. “I mean, obviously I’m not mad or upset or whatever. I’m—accepting? Ugh, that’s a garbage word.” He huffed, frustrated with himself. “Look, you’re… gay?”

The muscle at the hinge of Gabe’s jaw bunched. “Yeah.”

“Cool.” He drummed the fingers of his left hand on the desktop, realized he was doing it, and forced himself to stop. “And obviously if you haven’t told the team, you’re expecting some of them to be assholes. And that sucks. Because as far as I’m concerned, my reaction? Is, like, a pretty low bar.”

Gabe rubbed the back of his neck. “I mean, it’s not like you could come in and introduce yourself.”

If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. Dante was losing his grip on reality. “Yeah, maybe not. You mind if I shower now? I stink like dance club.”

“Sure. I’m just gonna….” Gabe picked up the television remote.

The television came on, and a moment later Dante closed the bathroom door behind him and started the water. Mechanically, he removed his clothes and stepped under the spray. The hot water sluiced over him, washing away the sweat and club grime and what had maybe been just a little too much hair gel.

But the image of Gabe kissing another man on the bed in their hotel room stuck with him, and now, in relative privacy and naked, alone with his thoughts, Dante was forced to confront the truth of his own semi.

“I did not see this coming,” he muttered as he reached for his shampoo.

Audiobook Review: His Leading Man by Ashlyn Kane

Listening Length: 5 hrs and 22 mins
Narrator: Kenneth Obi

Because this did not make me wince or roll my eyes once!

Just like the blurb says, Hollywood heartthrob Drew, is up for a challenge and that’s a comedy. However, despite finding the perfect script, Drew hasn’t found the right costar. That is, until the writer himself naturally fits the role to the “T”.

Steve for sure is hesitant to star in his own creation. He’s a writer, not an actor, and he prefers to be behind the scenes not the center of attention. Despite that, it’s very hard to say no to the charismatic Drew and plus, this is huge opportunity that Steve can’t pass up.

This is Dreamspun Desires done right. Narrated by Kenneth Obi, he did a good job, and I have no complaints at all regarding the voice distinction and emotion that was brought to this story. This isn’t fancy nor silly. This has minimal angst, plausible progression, and real life doubts and challenges. Well…. as much as you can get in the privileged world of Hollywood’s rich and famous.

It’s apparent I liked this. Though Steve and Drew weren’t looking, they quickly connect and realize that they just might have something special with each other. Awww.

Simple easy sexy romance!

Tag Team Review: Hex and Candy (Strange Bedfellows #1) by Ashlyn Kane

True love’s kiss can break the curse. But then what?

Cole Alpin runs a small-town candy store. He visits his grandmother twice a week. And sometimes he breaks curses.

Leo Ericson’s curse is obvious right away, spiderwebbing across his very nice body. Though something about it worries Cole, he agrees to help—with little idea of what he’s getting into.

Leo is a serial monogamist, but his vampire ex has taken dating off the table with his nasty spell, and Leo needs Cole’s companionship as much as his help. When the hex proves to be only the beginning of his problems, Leo seeks refuge at Cole’s place. Too bad magic prevents him from finding refuge in Cole’s arms.

Cole’s never had a boyfriend, so how can he recognize true love? And there’s still the matter of the one responsible for their troubles in the first place….

Average!

Sara - 5 Hearts

My ginger senses tingled when I saw Ashlyn Kane was going to write in the Dreamspun Beyond line. If you didn’t know tingling ginger senses are a good thing; they’re nice and warm, giving you a pretty euphoric feeling of anticipated pleasure. My ginger sense rarely fail me and they were spot on with this story. Kane nailed exactly what I’ve come to love from the Beyond line with perfection. The balance of paranormal and fluff were exceptionally done and I am still smiling after having finished this book a day later.

It was that good.

I have to say, reading for me has been a struggle this year and I really can’t put my finger on the why of it all. I just know that I am not reading as much and find it hard to even pick up a book and start reading. So the books that I do read, when they hit me in the feels and make me sneak read all day at my desk instead of the pace I’d set to read? They are gold.

Told from the dual POV’s from our adorable couple we meet Cole Alpin, candy maker extraordinaire, first as he is working in his candy store when a stranger walks in needing his help. Cole isn’t just a candy maker, he’s also a witch and a curse breaker and when the tall drink of water that is Leo walks into his store needed to break a curse, Cole is ready to help. Sure, he finds Leo attractive, but it’s the work that comes first as the Alpins are family of witches, who hold their craft to a high level of importance.

Oh Cole. I adored him so damn much. He’s so loyal to his family and to his grandmother first and foremost. She’s the one that raised him when his mother left and she is the one who has always had faith in his abilities, even if that means Cole may always be alone. I won’t go into all of that because it’s layered into the story, but Cole is adorable and steadfast with a dry sense of humor and a love of punny shirts. He’s quite easy to fall in love with.

Now Leo Ericson. How can I not fall in love with a guy who takes home a one-night-stand only to find out the dude’s a vampire? Leo takes it all in stride until him and said vampire, Roman, part ways and Leo can’t get no satisfaction with anyone. He finds out he’s been cursed by his ex-lover with fangs and is pointed in the direction of Cole to break the curse. Leo is so much fun. I love how open he is to the idea of being tossed into a world where vampires and witches exist. He’s fascinated by it all while being slightly afraid and it’s that side of afraid that moves this story along and moves him in with Cole.
True love’s first kiss.
I am kinda getting ahead of myself here. Let me backtrack and sum this up. Cole can break Leo’s curse, but it’s a bit tricky to do once he sees all of it in person and realized what it would take to break it. *cough* (see above quote) *cough* When Leo starts to feel watched and starts getting mixed messages of curse and protection, he runs to Cole for help. Cole opens his home to Leo and his already sugary heart starts to melt. I can write about these two for days and not get tired of reliving their moments. I love how easy they are with each other and how at first, Leo isn’t attracted to Cole because he’s not “his usual type”, but gets that his usual type is pretty crappy. Leo knows he’s magically cockblcoked by the curse, but as Cole loosens the threads of the magic, the two grow closer and start to build some serious UST. Serious UST where I needed to just make my own voodoo dolls of them and force them to make out. Goodness. When the near misses of a kiss happen, I felt it. When they start admiring each other’s body parts, I felt it. When both men wanted the other, but Leo was afraid of the curse and Cole is afraid of getting what he wants could do to the balance of the universe… I. FELT. IT. The payoff of all this UST though, is so freaking fracking worth it.

This reminded me of Practical Magic. With the Alpin family living in a small town and having a strong history of witches with the townsfolk fearing them. I love Practical Magic, so this warmed my heart with the pagan celebrations (Psst… I was born on Beltane) the Alpins have and how Gran is the center of it all. Both this story and the story of the Owens women have lessons in them with meddling with magic and its consequences. And both stories have witches who fall in love with humans that are their destiny. This book was easy to see translated to the big or small screen and would be so much fun to watch.

If you can’t tell, I loved this romance something fierce. I get giddy thinking of apple pie, Monarch Butterflies, Gran’s special tea, Ella’s aura readings, tarot cards foretelling destiny and all the magic involved. From Leo and Cole, to Gran, to Kate, to Amy, to Nate, to Jimmy and even to Roman. I enjoyed being part of this world in every way possible. Seeing as this is listed as the first book in a series, I am hoping I get to be a part of this world for a long time. I wouldn’t mind Nate getting a story or Roman, maybe Jimmy or really anyone, who is adjacent to Leo and Cole.

R *A Reader Obsessed* - 4 Hearts

A promising beginning to a charming series!

This starts off with Leo, newly introduced to the fact that there are things such as vampires that truly exist. Having just recently been in a relationship with one, Leo’s handling this new world view pretty well until what he thought was an amicable breakup is anything but, and he finds himself literally cockblocked by a curse courtesy of his ex. Desperate to find a solution, Leo lands himself in Cole’s candy shop hoping and doubting that a magical miracle can help him.

Cole doesn’t have active magic, but he’s particularly adept at seeing and unraveling curses. Leo’s predicament seems straightforward, but it soon becomes clear that the curse and the entire situation is rife with complications and could very well suck Cole down the proverbial rabbit hole, endangering his tender heart. What’s a nice guy like him to do? Follow it through, of course.

This was quirky and adorable, peppered with some cute funny as well as some heartfelt emotions and feels and little dollops of suspense. This kept me on my toes, and I was smiling and anxious and curious throughout. The premise was great. I loved that this blended magic and paganism plus paranormal and supernatural elements, to feature not only the aforementioned vampire, but witches and seers, talking animal familiars, and werewolves! To top it all off, it’s also wrapped up in a big pretty bow of fate and destiny.

Clearly, I enjoyed this story a lot to give it a 4 heart rating. However, having never read this author before, I’m not sure if it’s a me thing or just the author’s style, but I felt at times that the flow of the dialogue and prose was jarring or confusing, and it kicked me out enough for me to comment on.

Regardless, I obviously liked the torturous slow burn and the UST that is manufactured by Leo’s awful curse and the stipulations needed to break it. Once he and Cole are able to be together (around 65% for those who need to know), it was very nicely sexy and sweetly sigh worthy. Again, this was a great start to a new series despite my reading stumbles and one that I'll definitely be coming back to for more!

Blog Tour: His Leading Man by Ashlyn Kane

Welcome Ashlyn Kane! She's stopping by the clubhouse today to make us all jealous and talk about that best food she's ever eaten. Find out more about how that finds its way into His Leading Man below! See our 5 ❤️ review here!

Top 5 Places I’ve Eaten

Hi, my name is Ashlyn, and I’m a foodie. Today I’d like to brag uh, talk about some of the places
I’ve been over the years and the food I’ve eaten there. I’m hungry basically all the time and
food is great. Anyway, here’s the list. If you’re ever in the neighborhood, maybe you can drop
by and check these places out!

5. Porto, Portugal. Honestly, this place was the inspiration for the post. Why? It’s
gorgeous, reasonably priced, and it’s the site of one of the most unique tourist
experiences I’ve ever had. You see, Porto was the first place I ever did a food tour.

On the Taste of Porto Food Tour, we sampled countless local and national dishes, put
several kilometers on our walking shoes, and topped off the evening with some unique
local cocktails—made with the fortified wine beverage that is named for the city, port.
We got some great history on the city as well as on different types of local eats and
culture. Well worth the price of admission, though I do have to mention that the entire
city is uphill on uneven cobblestones, which present a real accessibility challenge.

4. Naxos, Greece. Naxos is a Greek island in the Aegean, population just shy of 20,000. It
features Greek ruins, private sandy beaches, and smaller crowds and lower prices than
the more popular islands. One of the real gems is a restaurant/bar called La Vigne,
which is run by two wonderful French ladies named Eli and Fred. It’s dinky, so make a
reservation, and keep in mind that if it’s hot you may want to sit outside. But even if
you’re inside, it will be worth it. The wine menu is like 50 pages and the food offerings
fit on a blackboard. Order everything and let the sommelier pick your wine. We had
rabbit rillette here, which there was a 0 percent chance of me ordering on my own prior
to this, and a 100 percent chance of me ordering if I ever go back.

3. Lisbon, Portugal. I just really enjoyed Portugal, okay? And one of the unique
experiences I had there was when we went to a fado bar. For the uninitiated, fado is a
music genre that is sort of bluesy, mournful, very rhythmic. It’s difficult to describe
because it’s not quite like anything else. In Lisbon you can go to a fado bar and, you
guessed it, order food while the performers play! (Or maybe they only do this in tourist
places and it’s gauche in real fado bars; I don’t know.) Anyway, prepare for very warm
temperatures because everyone always orders the flaming sausage thing, but it’s worth
it.

2. Tampa, FL, US. You might have noticed that all of these places are warmer than
Ontario. It’s possible that I’ve been slightly traumatized by how cold and long this past
winter was. But you know what I like as much as I like warm weather and almost as
much as I like good food? Hockey. Friends, I am here to tell you that hockey in paradise
is real and Tampa is the place to get it. This picture was taken in January! (IDK why these
people are not wearing shorts.)

But don’t eat at Amalie Arena. I paid 8 bucks for a Coke at the All-Star Game. Instead,
take a drive out to Indian Rocks Beach and go to LuLu’s Oyster Bar & Tap House. Order
the blackened grouper tacos. Take a selfie with the giant flamingo. You’re welcome.

1. Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada. Warm weather is great, but sometimes you
need something closer to home.

For the hockey fan, NOTL is close enough to Buffalo to catch an NHL game. It’s also just
an hour’s drive to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto (but don’t go watch the Leafs at
home unless you’re a zillionaire). You can also go out to Wayne Gretzky Estates Winery…
where they have an outdoor rink in the winter.

For the foodie, there’s Treadwell Cuisine, a farm-to-table restaurant in the heart of
downtown. Or just stay at any one of a zillion B and Bs competing to outdo each other with the most wonderful breakfast (shoutout to the Porch and Pillow and their crunchy
french toast).

Oh, and there’s always the falls.

Winery pick: Big Head has a great ten-wine tasting package that comes with gluten-free
crackers and an enormous block of parmesan cheese that you get to take home if you
don’t finish, but they’re one of the pricier ones. Budget winery pick: Coyote’s Run Estate
Winery has some great wines with a fraction of the sticker price of other, more popular
vineyards, plus one of their wines is called Pawsitivity.

There’s a little of my love for warm locations in my new book, His Leading Man. And a few of
my weird food quirks too (movie star Drew loves dill pickles, but hates dill). Maybe one day I’ll
be filling you in on the best place to eat in Hollywood! Until then, a woman can dream… and
write about other dreamers.

Review: His Leading Man by Ashlyn Kane

He wrote a comedy. Fate directed a romance.

No, Drew bats his eyelashes and convinces everyone that the movie’s writer should play Drew’s not-so-straight man.

Aspiring writer Steve Sopol has never had a screenplay optioned. Now one of Hollywood’s hottest properties wants to be in a movie Steve hasn’t finished writing—and he wants Steve as his costar. Turns out the chemistry between them is undeniable—on and offscreen.

By now it’s not even a secret that I love the Dreamspun Desires series. I am hooked on it and even when I am stuffed full of the fluff, there is always room for more of these stories that simply make my hopeless romantic heart sing. Adding Ashlyn Kane to the mix just ramped up that singing to opera levels because I adore the romance Kane delivers and she delivered it hard Steve and Drew.
You know how some people you click with right away and everything’s smooth and good, and you just get along with them and trust them? And after a short time it’s like you’ve known them forever and you’re totally comfortable?
That quote right there can sum up my feelings with this book as well as the relationship and how it builds with Steve and Drew. I fell so easily into this book with the biggest smile my face as we get Hollywood Hot Shot Drew Beaumont screen testing with numerous actors to fill the role of Morgan on his latest film, Dog Gone. Not one of these guys is cutting it and when it’s suggested that the script writer, Steve Sopol show these boys how it’s done, Drew gets an idea to make this movie great.

I am writing this with the biggest grin on my face and I am trying to find words that aren’t gushing about the book but just like Drew and how he feels about Steve, I’m having a hard time.

I loved that we got both POV’s in this and I am always a fan of the dual POV. Drew and Steve are amazing together from the first read through and they chemistry was off the charts. This isn’t an insta love kind of story though the men are in constant contact with shooting the film, what we get is time for them to get to know one another and then act on the growing attraction. They take it slow though and the slow gave some beautiful moments of UST that had fantastic pay off.

This was so much fun. The whole shooting the movie deal was done so well it was if I could see all of it as it happened and loved being in Steve’s head while he wrote the script. Honestly, I would LOVE to see Dog Gone made as an actual film because it’s freaking funny! I laughed reading and I the chance to get to see all that dog napping and bro buds fall for each other would make my day!

Drew was a blast to read. He’s totally a diva and owns it and that makes a difference. He’s had his downfalls as a child actor, then teen actor who went off the rails to now an adult who is all about making his own decisions and choosing roles on his own terms. He has issues with being away from his family and his trust of relationship instinct isn’t the sharpest. His reason for wanting to be part of an independent film with a low budget and no publicity needs to be read first hand and he won my heart so damn fast it gave me whiplash. But being witness to his feelings for Steve and how he lets himself be vulnerable on all levels as he falls for his co-star was truly sigh worthy.

Steve! Oh wow did I love Steve. I knew from the beginning there was something he was hiding and even though I did figure it out, it was still great to watch it all unfold. Steve has always been someone who wanted to write so when he started script doctoring and was good at it, writing his own script was a natural progression. There are so many things I loved about Steve from being an introvert, his morning runs and everything to do with Rita and his mom. We know he has a few Hollywood ties and that he’s familiar with the business but Steve’s secret lends a bit of turbulence to this romance as it takes off on its flight to Happily Ever After. Don’t worry though, Steve and Drew are amazing co-stars and co-pilots of their destiny and they land carefully and comfortably.

Speaking of Steve being an introvert! I dug how that part of him was handled and not made to be a downer at all. Drew knows what Steve needs when he has peopled too much and he gives him his space even when he’d rather be the big spoon to Steve. It was lovely to see how Drew took care of him and how he never pushed Steve to be anything more than he was.

Acceptance and communication were abundant in this romance and it made the bumps the men had to get over easy to read because they worked through it. Even the recasting of a dog or fixing a scene, these two work so well together that I know they will be able to handle anything thrown their way.

Ack!

I have so much in my head right now from reading this and I have to tell you, I read this in a day. In a time where reading had started to feel like a chore for me that is telling you A LOT about this book. Once I started I couldn’t stop flipping the page while smiling and feeling all the emotions you get when you get lost in a book and fall in love with it. And I fell in love with this.

One last thing… the last lines of this book and the last page turn…what we get… Perfection. OMG. It was perfection.
