1895. New York.

Gabriel Webster’s pack is in trouble. His father’s failing health and his mother’s untimely death mean that the vultures are circling. It won’t be long before his family’s assets are stripped and his pack disbanded. When an offer of help arrives in the form of a marriage of convenience, he has little choice but to accept.

The arrangement would be the perfect solution, if not for one thing. Gabriel is to marry Nathaniel Hayward, the Alpha who was badly injured in the accident that killed his brother ten years before—and the man Gabriel has been in love with for as long as he can remember.

Trapped in a business arrangement masquerading as a marriage — in a strange, empty house with a damaged husband who barely tolerates him — isn’t what Gabriel expected from life.

But sometimes the last thing we want is the beginning of something more.

And an ending can be the start of something beautiful.

About Alex

After spending far too long creating stories in her head, Alex finally plucked up the courage to write them down and realized it was quite fun seeing them on the page after all.

Free from aspirations of literary greatness, Alex simply hopes to entertain by spinning a good yarn of love and life, wrapped up with a happy ending. Although, if her characters have to go through Hell to get there, she’s a-okay with that.

With only a dysfunctional taste in music and a one-eyed dog to otherwise fill her days, Alex writes and walks on the South Coast of England—even when her heart and spellcheck are in New York.

Guest Review: A Foreign Country (Mr & Mr Detective #2) by Alex Jane

Private Detective John Right’s life is pretty good.

He loathes paperwork and could do without wasting his weekends catching out cheating spouses, but business is booming and he’s sharing his life with Jason, a man he’s still crazy about after three years.

The only downside is his lover’s baffling choice of friends and the fact that John is convinced Jason is keeping secrets from his dark past.

When a late-night phone call leads them to a kidnap victim with amnesia, and a dangerous man from Jason’s previous life suddenly resurfaces, they have much more than just secrets to deal with.

And after their mysterious house guest starts to show more than a passing interest in the detective couple, John is left struggling when his relationship, as well as his detecting skills, are put to the test.

Are they strong enough to resist the temptation of an enigmatic stranger?

Maybe. If they don’t get killed in the meantime.

Reviewer: Annery

This is Bk.2 in the Mr. & Mr. Detective series, and while not absolutely necessary, I’d say you’ll get more bang for your money if you read them in order. It wouldn’t be a hardship.

The story picks up three years after the events of the last book, and I’m both happy and chagrined to say that John & Jason continue to be the same knuckleheads from Bk.1. They’re settled into their own brand of happy: Jason not only accommodating, but also maybe getting off on John’s peeping perv kink, and John obsessively worrying & watching over Jason. While they’ve managed to mesh and meld their home life and their different, but complementary vocations, they also manage to not talk about anything. How or why, you may ask? I did too! It makes no sense, and yet, I can’t say that it’s unrealistic. Frustrating and annoying, but it fit the characters that Alex Jane introduced in Bk.1. They weren’t changed by the magic of love, which I appreciated. Also, to be fair, Jason doesn’t talk, but John doesn’t ask, both afraid to shatter their corner of heaven. Can’t say I blame them.

In the midst of mundane detective and computer work, John & Jason get involved in the case of an amnesiac kidnap victim. Involved as in bringing him home and things get interesting. In the meantime Jason’s past, which has been hinted at, resurfaces, and it ain’t pretty. Like in any good detective yarn, everything’s connected, but happily not with a connect-the-dots simplicity, more in a plausible and satisfying way. I won’t say much more about the plot, because I’m not a douche and it’s a fun ride. Alex Jane doesn’t write cookie-cutter plots or characters, and I love that. The story isn’t perfect, the characters could use tweaking, and the Britishisms (*see my review of the Bk.1*) could be easily fixed, and yet I’m glad to have found this series.

On the home front I was happy to see John & Jason living their lives, as gay men, and not becoming Ozzie & Harriet. I was/am pretty impressed by how well a British author captures NYC, in this case Brooklyn. I liked that Jason is still just a tech geek, (while John is almost a Luddite) he hasn’t become some Jason Bourne character. He isn’t even a good detective. It’s not his job. He’s afraid of the bigger bad guys, and will probably always be in the grip of some sort of PTSD after his ordeal. John still struggles with what level of perv is an acceptable level of kink and what is crossing the line. I love that he’s still mentally wrestling with true intimacy, on a personal level; that it’s something he and Jason are still working on. Like real life.

As a bonus, if you read the first book, you’ll be happy to check in on Chris, and may or may not be surprised by a plot twist to his story. I wasn’t surprised, but I was tickled pink nonetheless. And I am super stoked about the ending. I’m keeping all limbs crossed that the good things promised don’t dissapoint.

All Remy Harker wants is a fresh start.

Well, maybe that’s what he tells himself as he rolls up to his nice new house, in the nice little neighborhood, in a town where nobody knows his name.

He’s surrounded by friendly neighbors and a white picket fence. The ugly pink carpet might drive him to insanity, and he can’t stop wondering where the old lady who lived there before him died—but it’s nice.

And if he puts his mind to it, he can be anything—or anyone—he wants to be. He can be nice too.

At least, he thinks he can until he lays eyes on his next-door neighbor.

Luke Boucher is nice.

And quiet.

And perfect.

It doesn’t take long for Remy to insinuate himself into Luke’s life. A camera here, a break-in there.

– It’s not really stalking if you love someone, is it? –

But when Remy’s plan to make a good impression goes to hell, he ends up over his head in more ways than one. Then things aren’t quite so nice anymore.

– It’s not really murder if you love someone, is it? –

Loving your neighbor isn’t so easy when you’re the devil next door.

This book is part of CRIMINAL DELIGHTS. Each novel can be read as a standalone and contains a dark M/M romance.

Warning: These books are for adult readers who enjoy stories where lines between right and wrong get blurry. High heat, twisted and tantalizing, these are not for the fainthearted.

Review: Longing for Shelter (Alphas' Homestead #3) by Alex Jane

Seth Mason arrives at the Alphas’ Homestead under duress. The Council have made it clear that if his cousins, Caleb and Jacob, can’t tame Seth’s wild ways his very last chance will be used up and he’ll have nowhere left to go.

Seth is horrified to find that he’s going to have to spend a year living in the backwaters of Nebraska. He hates the Alphas. He hates the dirt and the horses. He hates the nearby town and everyone in it.

In fact, the only thing he doesn’t hate is Malcolm, the deputy sheriff. Unfortunately, Malcolm doesn’t seem to feel the same, especially when Seth uses his bad behavior to try to get the deputy’s attention.

~*~

Jacob feels for Seth—knowing what it’s like to lose family—but when his cousin’s bad behavior turns the town, not only against Seth but against all the werewolves at the homestead, he has to put his sympathies aside and fight to save his family and the place he’s called home for the last five years.

Sometimes the only shelter we can find from ourselves is in the hearts of others.

I should've known that perhaps this wouldn’t titillate me as much as the first two books did, because this doesn’t focus on Jacob and Caleb who I absolutely swooned over. This is about wayward cousin Seth, and for at least the first half of the book, he was not a very likeable character.

Now granted, Seth has been dealt a very shitty hand. His entire family and pack were brutally murdered, and in his grief, he’s essentially been acting out in the form of copious drinking, petty crimes, and disturbing the peace. Things that would normally have gotten him in trouble have given him a wide berth because of his tragic past. However, when Seth goes too far, in a last ditch effort to reform him, he’s sent to Jacob and Caleb in the hopes that at least he’ll heal and ultimately join their small, but loving, tight knit pack.

What ensues is an internal battle that Seth wars with himself as he grapples with his overwhelming grief and guilt. Slowly, Seth lets his barriers down to trust and love again, and let me tell you, while understandable, it was a rocky painful frustrating journey. What finally shocks him out of his stubborn stupor is the undeniable pull he feels towards stoic deputy, Malcolm, where they form a tentative friendship that turns into the strongest of bonds.

If you enjoyed the first two books, then overall you will probably like this as well. This is not action packed with multiple plot points. It’s about the day to day goings on regarding the homestead and the nearby townsfolk and their lives, suffused still with that pesky cloud of prejudice against werewolves.

This latest addition is a bit rough around the edges, especially regarding the edit. It was a decent love story (with a very light smexy rating) regarding Seth and Malcolm, but if I'm going to be honest, my attention was mainly on Jacob and Caleb who still love each other with everything they’ve got and epitomize what mates should be. Thankfully, this focuses equal time on the alphas and their unwavering love. I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting them, and for me, those were the best parts (plus the always adorable Thaddeus), and that’s where most of my rating goes towards.

Review: 'Tis the Season by Alex Jane

Aaron has spent the past ten months alone. When he meets a sad, yet strangely familiar man on a cold Halloween night, he impulsively invites him home. But the intimate connection they share lasts only until morning. Aaron wakes up alone—wracked with guilt and devastated to have lost his chance.

Or so he thinks.

Thanksgiving brings Aaron another shot at happiness, but letting go of an old love and accepting a new one isn’t as easy as everyone keeps telling him. And by the time Christmas Eve rolls around, it becomes clear that Aaron’s not the only one struggling to let himself love again.

Christmas miracles are all well and good, but it’s going to take more than the Holiday Spirit for Aaron to get his happy ever after.

A story of grief, sadness, and letting it go; and finding love when you least expect it.

'Tis the Season is a heartwarming holiday story about letting go of grief and moving forward.

Aaron and Dylan meet on Halloween when Aaron found Dylan standing alone on a bridge. They spent Halloween night together, only to part ways in the morning. They had another chance meeting at Thanksgiving and, since it's obvious Aaron is planning on spending the day alone, Dylan invited him to dinner with his family.

I loved the Thanksgiving dinner. Dylan's family was open and loving. Even though the story was told form Aaron's POV, there were some good revelations about Dylan through this dinner with his family. I think it really added depth to Dylan's character.

Then the story moved forward to Christmas. Through this time the guys were trying to figure out who they were together. They've both experienced heartbreak and aren't sure if they're ready for more. For being such a short romance, there was a lot of depth to these characters. I really felt for Aaron and his personal grief. I loved Dylan. He's such a great guy and so understanding. He wasn't ever pushy and let Aaron do what he needed to do in order to move on.

Because there was some depth, I wish the story was longer. I wanted just a little more from these characters. I felt like there was just enough to get me to love them, but not enough to feel completely satisfied.

At less than 100 pages, 'Tis the Season is highly recommended for a quick read that's loving and sweet.
