Review: Bully for Sale (Heat for Sale #2) by Leta Blake

Bullied and outcast, Ezer has seen firsthand the cruelties of the world. He knows what’s expected from his kind—timid compliance and submission to his “betters.” But Ezer isn’t one to roll over and conform to the role society has forced upon him.

Despite his defiant nature, Ezer is coerced into partnering with a man of his father’s choosing. One his father promises will love and care for him for the rest of his life.

A night of nameless and faceless passion later, Ezer is horrified to find himself bound to Ned, a bully who has done so much to make his life hell. Ezer’s determined to hate Ned but he can’t help the way his body craves his touch.

Ned is young, privileged, and hopelessly in love with Ezer. Too bad his pack of so-called “friends” have targeted Ezer for torment. Ned has a lot of regrets, but none greater than his role in Ezer’s misery. When Ned’s offered the contract of a lifetime, he sees it as the only way forward with the man he loves.

The dual biological drives of heat and its aftermath might be all that’s keeping them close now, but Ned is determined to prove he’s worthy of Ezer’s love.

While Ezer is just as determined not to fall for his bully.

Bully for Sale is the second addition to the Heat for Sale series. If you haven't read book #1- Heat for Sale (I suggest you do- the audiobook is fantastic!) The books can be read as standalone.

Leta Blake is definitely one of the few published authors' A/B/O that I can read and tolerate. If you're not familiar with the omegaverse the author set up, women do not exist, men can be carriers (omegas), while betas are relatively human and alphas are the top of the chain, with their knots and life saving semen. Omegas have less rights and are treated as breeding machines mostly. Let's get the triggers out the way: attempted rape, dubious consent, eating disorder.

In this newest addition, the main characters are still in high school. (Don't worry, they're all legal.) Omega Ezer Fersee is nineteen, dyslexic and the bane of his wealthy alpha parent. His omega parent has been kicked out of their home, his older omega brothers seem to care only for themselves and he has know one. And to top it off, he's bullied mercilessly and labeled as the 'weird kid'. After an attempted rape by three rich alpha bullies, Ezer's life couldn't get any worse right? Wrong. Wealthy omegas usually have their heats and bodies sold to the higher bidder or Ezer's family's case, an arranged 'heat cycle'. But the person who is chosen for him... one his alpha bullies, Ned Clearwater.

Ned is a coward and a follower, two bad combinations to have in life in my opinion. He's idealistic and romantic. And fell for Ezer the moment he saw him. Ned is trying to redeem himself and that's the crux of his arc for the majority of the book. He was loathsome and he's trying to better himself. He's a gentle giant that isn't too set in his ways that he can't be changed as he enters adulthood. I'm not a fan of cowards and Ned most certainly is one. But, he's likeable too.

Ezer is prickly and remains true to his self for the book too. He's had a crap hand dealt to him and he learns more about himself, you can't help but feel sorry for him too.

Essentially, this is new adult, but the adults in their lives are their puppet masters and they get thrown into too many adult things that they're not ready for. There is smut but since most of it due to their biology, I wouldn't say it was gratuitous. They need it at a molecular level. ;)

Why not rate it higher? While the story is paced pretty quick despite being 404 pages, the romance is mainly one sided for the majority of the book. (Which for me, works for the characters especially with the way Ezer is portrayed.) Thankfully, there's an epilogue! But we don't get to read the changes Ned needs to go through on page.I don't mind bully romances but something about Ned's cowardly ways got under my skin a bit.

Overall, it's a solid new adult story. I was happy Heat for Sale's main characters (Heath and Adrien) showed up a for a few. I did like the pair.

P.S. I do hope there's a story for each of the adult Fersee brothers, especially Shan. I'm so anxious at all the possibilities that could happen with Ezer's family.

Sigrid & Elyn meme

Elyn’s heart pounded in her chest as she weighed her options. Right here, right now, she could kill Jarl Sigrid the Valiant and gain great fame and renown. With no witnesses, she could concoct any story she liked about how the epic battle in the cave occurred… except without witnesses, people may say Sigrid died in the fall and all Elyn did was chop at her corpse making it appear she had been victorious. A further problem with that option was that the gods saw everything. To kill an unarmed, unconscious opponent was a dishonorable display of cowardice akin to murder.

What would Sigrid do? Elyn lifted her ax but hesitated. One so well respected would not slay an incapacitated foe, would she?

But what troubled Elyn the most was the true impetus behind her reluctance—she didn’t want to kill Sigrid. She wanted her to live. Lowering her weapon, she gazed at the fair legendary hero. Though caked in dust sticking to blood and sweat, her legs pinned under heavy jagged rocks, she was the most astounding human being Elyn had ever laid eyes on. Maybe it was not her beautiful face or toned body, but the songs and stories that hailed her victories over man and beast, that saluted her valor and generosity that most fueled Elyn’s imagination. Perhaps it was how Sigrid had saved her from a spear hurled on the battlefield when it had been against her own best interest. But maybe it was the strange energy that pulsed through Elyn’s sensations whenever they were near each other that compelled her to choose mercy. Then again, it could merely be her own sense of unworthiness.

I am nobody, she thought. I can’t kill a jarl, a female warrior jarl… a lovely, helpless woman of distinction. She needs my help.

Elyn shoved the ax back into her belt and lifted heavy stones off the fallen shieldmaiden, tossing them aside. As she worked, Sigrid awoke. Sky-blue eyes blinked and the trapped woman coughed away dust, soon becoming aware she was not alone.

With a startled expression, Sigrid grabbed her sword and swung it at Elyn, who had to jump to avoid its reach. “Do not think of crushing me with a slab of limestone!” she blasted with rage igniting in her glare. Sigrid’s voice was robust enough to overpower the burble of the waterfall. “I could carve you like a roasted pig even without the use of my legs.”

An admiring smile tugged at the corner of Elyn’s lips, and something sprang to life deep within her core. “I am certain that you could, Jarl Sigrid, but if you will notice, I am not attacking you, but digging you out of the rubble.”

“What happened?” Sigrid raised her left hand to the gash on her forehead.

“The ground gave way, and we fell into this pit chased by large rocks. I think a Jotnar is to blame,” Elyn replied in a placid tone that seemed to disarm Sigrid.

As her focus cleared, she aimed it on Elyn’s face. “I find myself at a disadvantage,” Sigrid admitted. “You know who I am, but I am not familiar with you. What is your name?”

Elyn heaved the last of the big rocks pinning Sigrid’s legs to the side and sat on it. “I am Elyn, a shieldmaiden of Firdafylke. I live in a village called Kaldrlogr. It would appear for the moment we are trapped in this crevice. Thus far, no one has appeared at the fissure above to lend aid, and I suspect the battle continues.”

Sigrid nodded. Elyn! So that is your name. Satisfaction nestled within Sigrid until she recalled why they were there. Feelings of languid infatuation evaporated, and vengeful wrath rushed in to seize their place. She pushed up on her sword, gathering her legs under her body, and struggled to her feet. She could tell her injuries were more than superficial, and she could not bear weight on her right leg, but she was determined. Mirroring her movement with caution, Elyn rose from her rock and shifted a hand to the ax on her belt.

Pinning the flame-haired shieldmaiden with a frigid glare, Sigrid snarled. “Why did your raiders attack our farms? It is fortunate you were not among their number as we left none alive.”

She cocked her sword arm for a swing, and in an instant, Elyn whipped out her ax to block the whirling blade. The motion of the stroke rendered Sigrid off balance, and she could have easily toppled over, but her opponent pushed against her steel with her weapon until she was upright and steady on her one good leg. Elyn’s action surprised Sigrid, though she was glad for it.

“We did no such thing!” her foe declared with heated conviction. She hoisted her ax, poised at the ready.

Sigrid realized she was in no condition to fight, so she had better rein in her temper. She glanced down at Elyn’s sturdy legs, shapely hips, rounded breasts, up to luscious full lips, and finally into stunning green eyes and held them.

“Several of my friends were killed,” Sigrid asserted, and she felt a quiver go through her body. “A dozen men under the banner of Firdafylke carrying shields with your colors,” she testified, motioning to Elyn’s rönd lying a few feet away, “attacked the outlying farms of my village, Gnóttdalr. They burned homes, slew livestock, murdered women and children, then tried to flee like cowardly rodents.”

Elyn’s brows knit together in concern. “When was this?”

“Less than two weeks ago,” Sigrid confirmed. With her shoulder stiff and in pain, she lowered her sword but kept a firm grip on its hilt. “Maybe a week and a day after the first time we fought.” Sigrid tried to calculate, but her head throbbed. Has it been three weeks I have spent dreaming of you?

“That is impossible!” Elyn’s declaration snapped Sigrid’s thoughts back into focus. “It wasn’t us. All of Jarl Njord’s warriors are accounted for at that time and none have gone missing,” the younger woman insisted.

Sigrid’s frown deepened. “I know about Jarl Njord and his intentions for the throne of Firdafylke. With King Tortryggr’s mind and strength failing, he supposes to increase his fame by defeating us, but it shan’t work.”

“What are you talking about?” Elyn fumed and tossed her empty hand into the air. “There is nothing wrong with King Tortryggr’s health, mental or otherwise. And while it is true Njord has ambitions, he is not a traitor. What about your King Grimolf? Greedy to the core! We know about his plans to take over our kingdom, how he has promised all you jarls will double your holdings.”

“Nothing but sheep dung!” Sigrid retorted. “That is the biggest load of shite I’ve ever heard.”

Elyn’s brows narrowed, and her scowl deepened. “What about the Svithjod raiders that attacked our farms? We had defenseless people killed by your warriors, too. Did they make sport of it? Was it a game to them?”

“We did no such thing!” Sigrid’s voice reverberated about the cavern, which only increased the throbbing in her head. “We supported you several years ago when Raumsdal assaulted your land. I personally led a team of wagons to reinforce your army with supplies, and my brother brought volunteers to join your defenses.”

“I know,” Elyn countered, “which is why we feel so betrayed that you have invaded now. Maybe the raiders did not come from your band, but they flew the raven flag and carried the yellow and black shields of Svithjod. Why do you lie?”

She raised her ax in a defiant motion and Sigrid reacted instantaneously, slamming her sword to bear against it. “I do not lie!”

The two shieldmaidens pressed closely together, hot with anger and confusion. Sigrid was not expecting the arousal she experienced at the proximity to her enemy, but her desire could not be denied. It was baffling and unacceptable. Only a handle of wood and a blade of steel stood between them. Sigrid kept her balance on her one good leg, but if Elyn pulled away, she would surely fall. She felt the heat of her breath, inhaled her intoxicating scent, and her body ached for a woman she should not want. Is this a trick? Have I been bewitched? A part of her wished to examine Elyn’s every feature in intricate detail, while reason ordered her emotions to stand down.

Elyn slowly backed away, almost as if she was being careful to not cause Sigrid to fall. “No, you do not lie.” The words rang with sincere belief and Sigrid eased her muscles as she mirrored her foe to relax. They lowered their weapons at the same time. “But neither do I.”

Audiobook Review: Heat for Sale (Heat for Sale #1) by Blake Moreno

Heat can be sold but love is earned.

In a world where omegas sell their heats for profit, Adrien is a university student in need of funding. With no family to fall back on, he reluctantly allows the university's matcher to offer his virgin heat for auction online. Anxious, but aware this is the reality of life for all omegas, Adrien hopes whoever wins his heat will be kind.

Heath—a wealthy, older alpha—is rocked by the young man's resemblance to his dead lover, Nathan. When Heath discovers Adrien is Nathan’s lost son from his first heat years before they met, he becomes obsessed with the idea of reclaiming a piece of Nathan.

Heath buys Adrien’s heat with only one motivation: to impregnate Adrien, claim the child, and move on. But their undeniable passion shocks him. Adrien doesn't know what to make of the handsome, mysterious stranger he's pledged his body to, but he’s soon swept away in the heat of the moment and surrenders to Heath entirely.

Once Adrien is pregnant, Heath secrets him away to his immense and secluded home. As the birth draws near, Heath grows to love Adrien for the man he is, not just for his connection to Nathan. Unaware of Heath's past with his omega parent and coming to depend on him heart and soul, Adrien begins to fall as well.

But as their love blossoms, Nathan's shadow looms. Can Heath keep his new love and the child they've made together once Adrien discovers his secrets?

This was a solid omegaverse read.

In Heat for Sale, young omega Adrien is in a society where breeding/heats for profit is not frowned on. Omegas selling their heats to the highest bidder or having babies to secure future generations is key in this society. Women don't exist here. Omegas are revered for breeding. Virgin Adrien is a quiet omega college student in need of cash for school. He sells his heat and the highest bidder, older wealthy alpha Heath has an unknown obsession with Adrien. Plus, tie in Adrien's link to Heath's dead lover, it makes for an interesting plot.

There is something about the way Blake (Moreno) writes A/B/O that works for me. I've read the Heat of Love series, while both have similar bones in their omegaverses, Heat for Sale is more erotic, slightly darker. The D/s structure was a nice addition to story. The first time Heath gave Adrien an order, it was nice to read Adrien's submissive response. Heath was commanding in the bedroom, but wasn't authoritative 24/7. Adrien was submissive in nature but I didn't find him to be a doormat.

I bought the audiobook to read along with the story, so it was my first time listening to narrator Michael Dean. I'm pretty picky with narrators, and I'm unsure if I'd listen to more Dean narrations. We'll see. But I enjoyed him reading Heat for Sale. What grabbed me the most when listening is when the narrator would get on a roll and not take a breath when booming through a sex scene...it was like he was preaching porn. It made me giggle a bit, I can't lie. Dean was there narrating and getting into the characters and boom! Something erotic started and it was like there was a porn pulpit and he was there to preach. He seemed to have a blast. The voices were pretty great for the main characters.

If you like ABO and D/s (without the excessive fluff as some omegaverses tend to lean), I'd say check out Heat for Sale audio or book, either version works.

I see this is considered first of a series. If this actually comes to fruition, consider me there for future reads. I wouldn't mind revisiting this world.

Guest Review: The Demon's in the Details by Meghan Maslow

Can a sexy demon really spin straw into gold?

Poe Dupin, raven shifter and thief extraordinaire, is in trouble with a capital ‘T.’ Not only did he get his wing caught in the cookie jar during his latest heist, but his loser stepdad, the alpha, seems determined to run their roost into the ground. And Baltimore is many things, but forgiving is not on the list.

When his stepdad puts the roost in peril, Poe sees no choice but to bargain with Charm City’s only demon, Tommy Tittoti. Rumors are that Tommy eats the souls of those foolish enough to try. Three strikes and you’re out. But really, Poe wasn’t using his soul anyway. And if it saves his roost? Worth it.

Tommy isn’t what Poe expects. Demon—huge, horned, hairy, and scary, right? Nope. Blond, gorgeous, with a bubble butt, and a lilting drawl that beckons Poe to come play. Total hookup-app fantasy material. Even if he is a murder twink.

Poe’s no angel, but Tommy . . . well he’s more devil than demon. Yet, Poe just can’t seem to keep his feathers out of the fire. As one bargain turns into two, and then a third tragedy strikes the ravens, Poe finds himself falling for a guy who may very literally be the death of him. Or maybe the flames will burn them both.

The Demon’s in the Details is a fast-paced, roller coaster of a romance with a guaranteed HEA and lots of steam. Shenanigans include: a gold object that is definitely not a ring, a best friend who’s trigger-happy, and a demon who’s got a few surprises up his, uh, sleeve.

Reviewer: Free Dreamer

I was really looking forward to The Demon's in the Details and it sure didn't disappoint.

I've read and enjoyed Meghan Maslow's "Starfig Investigations" series and this book has a similar feel to it. It was fun, hot and hard to put down.

Poe and Tommy are both very likable. I loved how Poe was willing to do everything for his roost. And Tommy was great too. I mean, who doesn't like a bossy murder twink? They could have done with a bit more in-depth character development, though. They felt a tiny bit shallow at times.

The sex scenes were scorching hot. I really loved the relationship dynamic.

I love a good shifter story, especially if it has unusual shifters. Raven shifters definitely count as unusual for me, this was my first book with them. There was also a minor character that shifted into a housecat, which was great for a cat person like me. Sadly, Poe spent the vast majority of the book in human form, which was a bit disappointing.

The world building was interesting, though it too could have used more depth. There are a lot of different Fantasy elements here, so the author clearly put some serious thought into this version of Baltimore.

I really hope this will become a series. Maslow once again came up with a very unique set of characters in a very unique universe and I'd love to read more.

"The Demon's in the Details" was a fun, wild ride with lots of hot sex and a super fast read. A little more depth would have elevated this book from "really good" to "great", but other than that, I have no complaints.

I was given a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis

Adrien de Guillory may be the heir to the throne of Staria, but no one in court believes that the submissive, meek-minded prince will ever be king. What they don’t know is that Adrien is hardly the meek, shy creature he pretends to be and that he has his own plans for the future. To see those plans through, Adrien embarks on a journey to Mislia, the land of his mother’s ancestors, to seek an answer to controlling his magic of foresight.

The one thing Adrien’s visions don’t predict is Isiodore de Mortain, his father’s confidante and the subject of Adrien’s long-standing, deeply embarrassing infatuation. Isiodore intercepts Adrien on his way to Mislia. But it’s too late to turn back—the two of them are now stranded on foreign soil, forced to rely on each other in order to get home in one piece. With Isiodore set on keeping Adrien safe and Adrien determined to become the most troublesome prince in Starian history, a storm is brewing over Mislia...one that will surely sweep both of them out into uncharted waters.

(The Prince's Vow is an m/m dark fantasy novel, set in a fictional world where everyone is biologically either a dominant or a submissive and compelled to satisfy those urges. As such, the biological imperative kink in this story is pure fantasy, and not intended as a representation of real-life BDSM practices or dynamics.)

Adrien had never hated the rain more in his life.

He’d been so close. Isiodore had been practically on top of him, beautiful and radiating dominance, his eyes full of misplaced concern for the delicate innocent Adrien certainly wasn’t in his heart of hearts.

He knew it was probably a bad idea. When they got back to Staria, Adrien would go back to being the prince half the court pitied. The other half was waiting to disappear into the country, doomed to make way for a dominant child Emile was supposed to weave out of thin air. Isiodore would go back to making sure the king didn’t do something like, oh, put Adrien’s best friend’s life in danger a second time, or set the palace on fire, and they’d never mention what almost happened in Mislia again.

It didn’t mean Adrien wasn’t allowed to want things.

He wanted plenty. He wanted…so much more than he was supposed to want, and now that the constraints binding him were loosed, he had to get out of bed and trudge through the sand to a barn in the rain.

“Why does she even have a barn?” Adrien snarled, shoving on his boots, which were still damp from the sea. He caught Isiodore’s sidelong look and narrowed his eyes. “Yes, I know who I sound like.”

“Note how I’ve said nothing,” Isiodore said. Adrien grumbled to himself. His cock was still half-hard, painfully noticeable through the long tunic the Mislians favored, and all he wanted was for the damn barn to sink into the ocean so Isiodore could push him up against the wall. Instead, he laced up his boots—or one of them, the other lace was gone with their miserable lean-to on the beach—and hobbled out into the rain.

It was like walking into a kaleidoscope. It wasn’t nearly so bad as when they were captured, and he had more pressing things to focus on. But with the storm at its zenith, Adrien was left facing sheet after sheet of fragmented visions, flickering and flashing with every gust of wind. He ground his teeth and pushed through and nearly fell down the stairs.

Isiodore grabbed his arm. “Careful with that boot.”

“It’s fine,” Adrien said. “I just can’t see.”

“It’s always like this?” Isiodore whispered as Adrien forced himself to lumber down the steps. “Depends.” Adrien trudged through the wet sand, stopped, and shielded his eyes from the rain with both hands. “Where’s this barn supposed to be?”

“Behind the house,” Summer said in his ear. He whirled. No one was there.

“I’ll lead,” Isiodore said. Adrien would have walked on without him, but the rain was getting worse, so he kept his gaze lowered and held onto Isiodore’s shoulder as they rounded the beach house.

To call the glorified shed behind the house a barn was pushing it, in Adrien’s opinion. It did have a large pair of doors on one side. It was shaped roughly like a barn, but the whole thing was made of a coarse, pale stone with a blue tin roof, peeled up on one side and buckling dangerously. Summer stood just outside the doors, a string of bells wrapped around her hand, hair pinned firmly under a cap, with Tanis leaning over her to guard her from the rain. Water dripped off Tanis’ wings, sparkling with visions too broken to understand, and she bared her teeth in what Adrien hoped was a smile.

“I’m going to call down ropes,” Summer said, and her voice rang out clear despite the roar of the wind and the low thunder of the roof shaking. “You two will secure them while I keep the rest of the roof from blowing off.”

“You’re so competent, baby,” Tanis said.

Adrien gave Isiodore a look. He shook his head slightly.

Summer rang two bells, almost inaudible in the storm. But Adrien nearly fell back as a rope slithered out from the curtain of colors and light to land heavily in the sand. He grabbed it and saw the same vision he’d caught while shaving earlier—a hand on someone’s throat, the mark they made glowing faintly, a pale face only just visible through the grinning, yellowed skull of a dragon.

“Boy?”

Adrien jumped. Tanis had drifted toward him through the rain, her wings barely moving. Adrien wrapped the rope around his hand and squinted up at the barn. It was almost invisible through the rain.

“Don’t touch him,” Isiodore said.

“So possessive,” said the demon. She hovered at Adrien’s side, watching him. “You need to step back.”

“Oh. Sorry.”

Tanis stayed close while they hauled on the roof, which shuddered as bells rang out, followed by the soft droning of Summer’s voice, low and steady. Adrien’s arms felt like they were going to give out by the time whatever magic she was working secured the roof. When the rope disappeared in his hands, he went staggering backward.

“Not yet,” Tanis said as Isiodore reached for Adrien. “We have to check on the records.” The barn was a welcome relief from the rain, even though there was quite a bit of water on the floor. Adrien backed away from the door as Summer whistled wall sconces to come to life, illuminating row after row of metal shelves. Each shelf held a box labeled in a fine, precise hand, and each row was marked with symbols in black ink.

“This way,” Summer said. “I just hope none of the records were damaged.”

“I remember them,” said Tanis. “They can always be rewritten.”

“I’d prefer to keep my hands if at all possible,” Summer said. She walked through a puddle of water, and Adrien saw a man there, dressed in furs, drawing his bow. He forced his gaze away.

Oh, no, it isn’t going to work like that.

Adrien jumped. Tanis was with Summer, helping her pull down a box from the corner where the roof had buckled. She looked at Adrien with her cold, glassy eyes, but her mouth didn’t move.

“What?”

“I said help me here, boy,” Summer said. Isiodore was already pulling a box down, sliding the lid open just a fraction to see what was inside. Adrien stepped into the puddle.

So you’re like my Summer, then, said Tanis’ voice, as Adrien sank under the weight of a box. Hungry. You want to know things, know the truth of them, how they work. I wondered when you fell into my embrace. At first, I thought it was ambition, and oh, you are ambitious, aren’t you?

I don’t know what you mean, Adrien thought.

You crave a crown almost as much as you crave knowledge, Tanis’ voice said. A shame you have the wrong kind of magic. Any demon you would summon would be formidable indeed.

Adrien pointedly turned away and set the box down on a dry patch of floor. There were just trinkets inside, damp with the rain but seemingly useless—necklaces made with clay beads, bracelets, a ball with a hole in the center. He laid them out so that they looked like a magpie’s hoard and glanced at Isiodore’s, which was much the same.

“What are these?” he asked.

“Heirlooms,” Summer said. She started digging through a bag that had been soaked through. “Some demons, they become attached to a thing their mage wore or loved. We keep them here so that when the demon is summoned by a new mage, that mage can carry this heirloom with them.”

“Demons can be summoned more than once?” Adrien touched the ball. It looked new, polished to a shine, but the necklace next to it was drab and cracked, with only a fleck of paint on the largest pendant. “How do you know which one is which?”

“I’m the Archivist,” Summer said dryly. “I have kept the records of every mage and demon to have been bound in Mislia’s history, their names, their ages, their skills. When humans die, their demons will sometimes come to me with their heirloom before they return to the dark. Some demons come to me first, before the mage’s family, because we were there at the start of their bond, and we will be there for them at the end.”

“That’s a little sad,” Adrien said.

“It’s important that we remember who they were,” Summer said. She touched the necklace. “Artemis, I believe.”

“Her partner was Han,” said Tanis. “It’s been sixty-two years since he returned to the dark. He must be resisting.”

“Do you have one?” Adrien asked. “An heirloom?”

Tanis smiled. “Of course.”

Summer didn’t speak. She just kept drying out the heirlooms in the bag, laying them carefully in order.

“Is it rude to ask?”

“It’s a memory,” Summer said after a moment. “We carry a memory for her, every Archivist since the first.”

“Since Tanis,” Tanis said, and there was something like fondness in her smile as she gazed down at Summer.

The storm was finally dying down when the corner of the barn was done being rescued from the rain, and Adrien and Isiodore stood before the collected hoard of over a hundred demons spread out on the floor. There were toys, letters, a book so worn the cover was rubbed off, even a bag of coins from Arktos. All belonging to dead mages and their demons, keepsakes of humans long gone.

It was hard to step out into the rain again, but Isiodore lay a hand on the small of Adrien’s back, keeping him steady.

“If I close my eyes,” Adrien whispered. “I can just make it.”

“I’ll get you there,” Isiodore whispered back into his ear.

Guest Review: Forecast (99 Daddies #3) by Casey Cox

Forecast: (noun)
A calculation or estimate of future events, especially coming weather.
See also: Liam “I'm Always Right” Wright.

Not your typical Daddy. Not your typical boy.
Not your typical fake relationship.

Hudson Madden looks like the kind of guy you don’t want to piss off—he’s a walking wall of muscle, brightly tatted ink up both arms, and low grunts. But underneath it all, he’s a gentle giant. One who can’t find what he wants because of the assumptions people make:

He must be an alpha.
He must be a dominant Daddy.
He must be looking for a sweet, passive boy.

The truth is more complicated. Haunted by memories of a former lover, and interested in exploring types of sex that aren’t easily defined, Hudson is happy to harbour his innocent crush on the local weatherman.

Until said weatherman crush walks into Hudson’s gym and turns his life upside down.

Liam “I’m Always Right” Wright. It might be a cute catchphrase, but when it comes to love, Liam is always wrong.

Liam hasn’t got time for love. He’s got his sights set on the big time, becoming a prime time meteorologist on a major national TV station. He’ll do anything it takes to get the promotion, even if it means entering into a fake relationship to improve his chances.

A quick-fix, no-mess solution.

So why does it feel so right when Hudson looks at him, spends time with him, and gets to know him in a way that no one ever has?

Will Hudson be able to break down his walls and let Liam in? And when forced to choose between his career and love, will Liam be able to make the right choice?

Reviewer: Shee Reader

Liam is living a life he worked for, as a stepping stone to the big time. He’s constantly being hustled by his publicist to do all the right things necessary to get the big promotion he really deserves. A trip to a local gym to show his Insta-fans his work-out changes everything!

Hudson has been harbouring a crush on Liam the weatherman for ages (despite the silly catch phrase) and is tongue tied when the luscious man walks into his gym. Hudson is not really the man people assume he is. Will Liam make the same mistake of judging this book by the cover?

The need for a pretend boyfriend to walk the red carpet with him, prompt Liam to ask the quiet personal trainer to do it as they look good together. The only real problem is Hudson isn’t pretending.

The story follows the lovely men from their meeting to the ‘dates’ to the real matter of love and attraction, but is either of them ready to put himself out there?

I loved both main characters in the story (and the pop-ins from the men in the previous two books) and really wanted them to find their HEA (which I’m happy to say, they do) but I really loved that this book challenged some really big stereotypes. The big muscular guy isn’t always the toppy-dommy- daddy, and in a genre obsessed with tops/bottoms and penetration, this book was a refreshing change. I also loved how the ending, though satisfying and pleasing, was unusual and perfect for our MC’s.

Recommended.

I was given a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Guest Review: Big (99 Daddies #2) by Casey Cox

Big: (adjective)
Large, as in size, height, width, or amount.
See also: Nick "Big Boy Energy" Macklin.

A Daddy who has everything money can buy...
Except the one boy he can’t have.

You’ve never met a boy like Nick Macklin. He’s an enigma, wrapped in warm cinnamon pastry, wearing a belly-exposing tank top. He’s two hundred and forty pounds of confident, cocky, curvy yumminess.

He’s proud of his body and proud to be a big boy. He’s also loud, unfiltered, loyal, and fiercely independent. In other words, everything smart, successful, sexy silver fox Daddy Steel Crawford has ever wanted in a boy.

There’s just one problem: Nick thinks Steel’s a jerk.

One of those guys that can get what he wants, simply because he’s a man with the means to afford it. Steel might be a self-made man, and able to catch Nick’s eye—but that doesn’t guarantee he’ll automatically be able to capture Nick’s heart.

Even if he is a super successful lawyer who runs his own law firm.
Even if he is as kind as he is rich, and a genuinely decent guy.
Even if his light blue eyes, silver mane, and sculpted body have earned him the title of one of Daylesford’s Most Eligible Daddies...three years running

Steel is a Daddy who can buy anything he wants, but will Nick be the one thing he can’t have?

Reviewer: Shee Reader

We met Nick and Steel in the first 99 Daddies book (First) where Nick’s best friend Mikey meets and falls in love with the daddy of this dreams. Will Nick and Steel ever find the happiness they are both looking for?

Nick is a gorgeous, sassy, big ball of fun! He is a force of nature scraping his way through life with a selection of jobs as he tries to help his grandparents (who raised him) keep their bakery afloat in the face of jerk-off developers trying to run them into the ground to buy their property, headed up by king of the jerks Steel Crawford.

Of course this is all set up nicely for a “lets just have sex to get this stupid attraction out of the way” type tryst with all the usual consequences you’d expect!

This is a joyous romp. Smartly written and so very camp - the amount of tongue-in-cheek action would be enough to give you a cramp, but this is funny and sexy and perfectly escapist in a way that recent times has been essential to my mental health!

Highly recommended for over-the-top rainbows and unicorn fans who are avoiding too much angst.

I was given a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Welcome author T.A. Moore with the latest blog tour for new release, Split Shift (Night Shift #2)! Author T.A. Moore visits with a chapter she wrote in the Night Shift world! Plus, she hosts a $10 Amazon gift card giveaway! Good luck!

Title: Split Shift
Publisher: Rogue Firebird Press
Release: April 19

Blurb: The hard thing about Night Shift is when you realize werewolves are bad news, but people can be worse.

After Night Shift officer Kit Marlow solved the murder of child star Haley Jenkins, he figured he was due a little down time. Maybe even a dinner date with Cade Deacon, the sarcastic security consultant, very good kisser, and werewolf who'd helped with the investigation.

That was before someone in a Night Shift uniform drove them both off the road. With the full moon up the only dinner date Cade is interested in...has Marlow served up on a plate. And not in a sexy way.

It's the second time that corrupt Night Shift officers have tried to kill Marlow. If he has his way, it will be the last. Problem is he only has twenty-eight days before the next full moon. If he hasn't identified who wants him dead by then, he'll have to take to werewolf filled streets with a team at his back he can't trust.

First things first, though. Get through the next twelve hours alive and uneaten, and hope that if a second date is still on the cards it's less eventful.

Tour:

First of all, thank you so much for having me! I’m thrilled to be here with my new release, Split Shift by TA Moore, the second novella in the Night Shift series.

For the blog tour I’ve written a short story set in the Night Shift world. I hope you enjoy!

Chapter 5

Blood and bits of hair and skin greased the crack in the side of the bus. It hadn’t been quite big enough for whoever had been dragged out. Marlow was careful where he put his hands--as much as he could be--and tried not to think about it.

He reached up, grabbed the cold metal strut of one of the seats, and dragged himself up. A strip of metal gave under his foot and he slipped briefly, a stab of pain in the back of his calf as something dug in, but he steadied himself and made it up onto the sticky, smelly floor of the bus.

A kid instantly launched herself at him. Skinny little arms wrapped his neck and she hiccupped sobs into his shoulder. She was kind of damp and smelled of...panic. Marlow tried to peel her off, failed, and steadied her with one hand instead as he got to his knees.

“Night Shift are here now!” a little boy said, puffed up with authority and fear. “We’ll be a-ok! Sir, yes, sir!”

Mutters of ‘Night Shift’ eddied through the bus and the kids shuffled closer to him. Some of them sniffled and asked for their moms or dads, others patted him like he was a good luck charm. They were all sticky. It seemed petty to notice that under the circumstances, but they were.

There was no teacher.

Bennett squirmed into the bus with much less fanfare, which explained why she’d let Marlow go first.

“Where--?”

Marlow shook his head and indicated the cluster of kids with a quick flick of his head.

“OK,” he said. His voice sounded muted and small under the gunfire and howls from outside. He took a deep breath and tried again, louder. “Everyone, take a seat. Come on. I want everyone’s butt on a seat by the time I count to three. Can you all do that? One. Two.”

The kids shuffled in place uncertainly. A few started for one of the benches and then stopped when no one else followed them.

“It’s not a field trip,” Bennett hissed at him. “Jesus Christ.”

“Everyone,” Marlow insisted. “Two and a half. And threeeeee.”

The kids finally co-operated, hunched in little clots of bodies on benches meant for two kids.

Except for one little girl. She had blood in her blonde curls and a long gash on her face that might even scar if she lived long enough. Not badly though. Her eyes were huge and glazed with shock.

“Mrs Notting hurt herself,” she said. For some reason saying it broke the dam and her face screwed up as tears spilled down her face. “Really bad.”

Bennett grimaced at Marlow and then turned to point at the kids. They stared at her finger as it tracked along the rows. “You lot? Stay. Put. Got it?”

They all nodded earnestly.

“Hey, kid,” Marlow put his hand on the little girl’s shoulder and squeezed gently. “What’s your name?”

The little girl wiped her nose on her sleeve. “Elliot.”

“OK. Elliot, why don’t you take us to your Mrs Nottingly? Let’s see if we can help her?”

Elliot squinched her face up, dripping fresh blood from the cut on her cheek, and shook her head. “I don’t want to,” she said. “Mr Redknapp is up there.”

“Where?” Bennett asked. “Front or back?”

Elliot pointed toward the front of the bus.

“OK,” Marlow said. He pulled a pad of gauze out of his pocket, pressed it against her cheek, and lifted her hand to hold it in place. “Hold that there and go sit down while we got check on them. OK?”

She stumbled away. Marlow pulled his gun and held it low against his leg as he followed Bennett down the bus. It jolted and rattled underfoot as wolves got through the Night Shift barricade to crash into it.

Bennett caught her balance on a kid’s head, apologised, and Marlow slid past her into the cab.

It turned out Mr Redknapp didn’t need any help. He sprawled, head down, on the steps toward the claw-scored door. There was a hole in his back big enough to stick a fist into and from the thick, clotted puddle of blood under him the one in his chest was even bigger.

“I...I had to,” Mrs Notting said. She was a stocky, middle-aged woman with severely cut hair and watery blue eyes. She had on a peach t-shirt with ‘Greetings from Florida’ on it and both legs torn up by wolf teeth. It was enough of a mess it was hard to tell how bad. Her hands were rock steady on the shotgun she cradled in her arms. “He was going to open the door. I had to stop him. He wouldn’t have made it, he couldn’t, and I...I had to give the kids a chance.”

Marlow hesitated for a second, the words stoppered up in his throat with shock.

“You did the right thing,” Bennett said, her voice flat with conviction. “He’d have gotten you all killed.”

“Shotguns standard issue on a school bus?” Marlow asked.

Notting glanced down at the gun as if she’d forgotten it was there. Her fingers flexed against the stock.

“Not usually,” she said. “It seemed like a good idea tonight. Guess I was right.”

She tilted her head back against the seat and closed her eyes. The colour had left her face, her lips a liverish pink.

“You guys got this?” she asked. “Because I’ve lost a lot of blood and I’d like to pass out.”

Description

Edgar Tobias works as a freelance computer programmer in the city of Anver. Desperate to escape his deceased fathers’ fame as a hit singer-songwriter duo, he left the city of Kasyova and the arts behind. He doesn’t know he’s about to be targeted in a vicious murder game where the prize is a million dollars in cryptocurrency to the first person who can capture his murder on video.

Reis Asher lost everything in the Anverite civil war ten years ago, including their mother. Their father created the agreement known as Unification, which joined Anver and Kasyova to create the Twin City-States of Anver-Kasyova, ending the civil war and ushering in a new era of peace and prosperity.

When they discover the Killing Game, they know that it represents a threat to everything they hold dear and set out to stop it. But powerful forces are at work that refuse to be undermined by one stubborn soul and their sense of justice.

Someone wants Edgar dead, and they’ll stop at nothing to see him six feet under… even if that means Reis and other innocent bystanders get caught in the crossfire.

Chapter One
Edgar

Edgar Tobias woke to the irritating beep of his alarm, the three-tone pitch loud enough to rouse even the dead from their slumber. He fumbled for the clock with blurred vision and shut it off before pulling himself up to a sitting position to avoid the temptation of snoozing. He looked at the blinds covering his window, and the lack of light told him it was still dark outside. It was always hard to get out of bed in the darkness, but when he needed to start working early to make ends meet, he had to use all his willpower to make sure he didn’t spend all his waking hours beneath the covers.

Thankfully, his computer provided much-needed motivation by choosing that moment to light up, informing him of several unread e-mail messages that might be from his freelance clients. Edgar peeled back the blankets to reveal his naked body and climbed out of bed. He padded across the carpet to his desk. There were a surprising number of new contract offers, given he’d only started freelancing a couple of weeks ago. People wanted mobile applications and they were willing to spend a good amount of cryptocurrency to make their ideas come to life—without having to waste time learning a programming language. Yeah, quitting Central had been the right thing to do. When it became clear his manager wasn’t going to allow a promotion unless Edgar went on a date with him, it was obvious the only way for Edgar to restore his self-respect was to quit and go into business for himself.

Sensing a long day ahead of him, Edgar grabbed the bath towel slung over the back of the chair and headed into the bathroom. Cool water always refreshed him, and it had the desired effect—until it became scalding hot without warning. Edgar backed up, uttering a curse. He was covered in lather, and the last thing he wanted to do was call the maintenance manager while he was naked and soaped up… Bad enough Chris always gave him the eye when he came to work on Edgar’s aging refrigerator. Edgar suspected his interest was why he’d never received a new one in the building’s annual budget. Chris wanted to keep making repairs and inventing excuses to see him.

Edgar shut the water off and walked into the kitchen. He turned on the faucet to find the water was scalding hot there too. Someone had cranked up the water thermostat to beyond safe levels. It seemed like a strange thing to happen, but it could have been a perfectly routine malfunction down in the boiler room. He was a programmer, not a plumber. He poured the hot water into a bowl and added ice from the fridge’s ice maker to cool it off. Back in the bathroom, he washed the suds away with the water until he felt clean enough to dry off with a towel. That inconvenience resolved, he dressed in jeans and a T-shirt before dialing the number for the maintenance manager.

“Chris? Yeah. The water’s boiling. You might wanna check out the stoker before it explodes… I don’t see why you need to come up here for that, but go ahead… Yeah, I’m here right now.” Edgar cut the connection, releasing a sigh. Of course, he wanted to make a house call. Edgar hadn’t realized Chris was so desperate to see him he’d burn his skin off for a visit, but he could tolerate the guy’s presence if it meant the issue got fixed.

Not five minutes later, the apartment echoed with a hollow knock. Edgar closed his e-mails and wandered to the front door. He let Chris in and shut the door behind him. The skinny blond man had been an excellent building manager for years, and despite his annoying swooning over Edgar, he had to admit he liked the fact Chris was friendly, charming, and knew his way around plumbing and heating systems like a pro. While people in Anver often had to deal with slum landlords and half-assed repairs, Chris had always kept his apartment feeling like a luxury pad for half the price a professional usually paid.

“Hey, Chris.” Edgar greeted him first, surprised he walked past him without a word. He looked a little pale as he headed to the bathroom and proceeded to throw Edgar’s clothes out of the closet so he could get to the pipes.

“Sorry. I probably should have taken care of that, huh?”

“It’s no big deal.” Chris moved a large box of sweaters out into the hallway. Edgar noticed a clip-on camera on the pocket of his overalls.

He raised an eyebrow. “They’re making you wear those for house calls, now?”

“No,” Chris said. “I wanted to wear it. The guy down in 2B was creepy as hell last time I was down there.”

“I hope you’re not wearing it because you think I’m creepy.” Edgar took a step back to give Chris some space. “If I’ve done anything inappropriate over the years, please tell me so I can never do it again.”

Chris laughed. “I wish you would do something inappropriate! Why do the good guys have to act like celibate priests? You’ve got the bad boy look; can’t you follow up on that rogue-like charm with a good come-on?” He took a hammer to the one pipe that looked like it was in perfectly good shape, confirming Edgar’s suspicions he was here just to see him, as usual.

“I guess I don’t do come-ons,” Edgar said. “I’m sorry to disappoint.”

“I’m not your type,” Chris pointed out. “In that we’re both bottoms. A tragedy if I may say so myself.”

Edgar laughed. “Uh-huh.”

Chris stood, the mirth draining from his face. “There. I need to check the stoker in the basement, and you’ll be good to go. Want to come check it out with me? I’ll need someone to hold the flashlight.”

Edgar opened his mouth to say no, he had a lot of work to do, but a hint of something in Chris’s eyes made him not want to say no. It wasn’t attraction or anything of the sort. Chris seemed sad all of a sudden, as if a black cloud had blotted out the sun. Was he really so smitten with Edgar, or had his ego finally inflated out of control? Regardless, it seemed cruel to make excuses. Especially if that creeper from 2B was hanging around downstairs.

“Okay. Let’s go.” Edgar followed Chris out of the apartment. They stood in silence as the elevator arrived, and then once again as it descended to the basement level. It chimed, doors opening into a dimly lit passageway. A striplight flickered off and on, struggling to cling to life. A shiver passed down Edgar’s spine and he had to fight the sudden urge to leave Chris and go back upstairs. Instead, he forced himself to walk forward until the elevator doors closed behind him.

“Here.” Chris pressed a flashlight into his hands, and he turned it on. Green tile covered the walls, a remnant of the building’s past as a hospital. After Unification, Anver had found itself with a surplus of hospitals and a shortage of housing. It had made sense to turn some of the towering glass structures into homes. The bomb-proof glass—a remnant of the war—held the heat in nicely.

The huge industrial furnace clanked and groaned as they stepped into the stoker room. Chris looked at the dial and sighed. “Someone’s been messing with the heat. I told Kristoff we needed a lock on this door. You know, I love Kasyovans, but it’s a pain in the ass when they’re too busy with their next show to deal with their obligations.”

Edgar vaguely recalled the building’s owner saying something about being in a band, but only answered with a grunt. He was ready to get out of here and get back upstairs, where heavy thoughts like loneliness could be buried under a pile of work.

“Hey, Edgar. You ever hear of the Hunt or the Committee?” Chris asked.

“The what or the who?” Edgar narrowed his eyes. “Not a clue what you’re talking about, I’m afraid.”

“Nothin’. Forget I asked.” Chris shrugged.

The flashlight began to flicker in Edgar’s hands, throwing them into momentary gloom as the battery signaled its imminent death.

“I think we should hurry up and get out of here,” Edgar said.

“Are you afraid of the dark, pretty boy?” Chris mocked.

“Don’t call me—” Edgar’s complaint was cut off by a force constricting his air supply. It took him a moment of alarm to realize he was being strangled with a rope from behind, its owner pulling back almost hard enough to snap his neck. He swept out with his leg and took his assailant down, grateful for the trick he’d learned in Kasyovan conscripted military service. The rope loosened and he was able to crawl free, gasping for air.

“Shit!” The voice was unmistakably Chris’s.

“What…the…fuck!” Edgar yelled, reaching for his throat and coughing until tears swam in his eyes. The rope burn would leave a mark, but if Chris was his assailant, he wasn’t safe yet. He fled toward the light, leaving the boiler room and running along the dim corridor. He pushed the instant need for a reason away and concentrated on hammering the call button for the elevator. When it arrived, he entered and immediately hit the close button, aware of Chris racing toward the doors…

They shut completely with a thud and a chime. Edgar slid down the wall, horrified and perplexed, as the elevator ascended. Had Chris tried to kill him?

What in the Twin City-States was going on?

Review: The Young Man's Guide to Love and Loyalty (Magic Emporium) by Clara Merrick

Loyalty is Lieutenant Owain Morgan’s watchword—loyalty to England’s Queen Elizabeth XII, to her daughter the Princess of Wales, and to the Royal Navy in which he serves. When his loyalty leads him into danger, an unseen something—or someone—lends a helping hand. Is he imagining it? Could it be a guardian angel? Or is it someone—or something—else?

Enter the intriguing Benjamin Fletcher. Owain knows that sharing a drink and a steamy afternoon together doesn’t have to mean anything, but Benjamin’s quiet charm works its way into his heart…. Until Benjamin turns up in the Earl of Essex’s retinue, that same Earl who, rumor says, is angling to marry the Princess of Wales and make her power his own.

Every encounter with Benjamin binds Owain’s heart more tightly to this enigmatic man yet tests his loyalty to Queen and Country. Will Owain be forced to choose between love and loyalty?

The Young Man’s Guide to Love and Loyalty is part of the Magic Emporium Series. Each book stands alone, but each one features an appearance by Marden’s Magic Emporium, a shop that can appear anywhere, but only once and only when someone’s in dire need. This alternate history contains princesses, palaces, steam trains, fumbling lovers, and a guaranteed HEA.

This was an interesting take on European history retold in an alternate universe, all entwined with magic and the land of fairy.

Owain is a straight laced English naval officer, and when his captain confiscates much needed Spanish silver for the crown, he’s tasked with reporting the valuable intel to his command in London. Once he starts on his journey, strange happenings abound, and Owain soon finds himself in over his head.

Soon, Owain is embroiled into also aiding the royal princess unravel a possible conspiracy to overthrow the throne, and his eyes are slowly opened to the world around him. Things aren’t black and white, and treachery lurks around every corner. What also lurks is Ben, the mysterious man whom Owain had a blissful one night stand with, and it remains to be seen if Ben is a friend or a foe. Regardless, Owain can’t stop thinking about him and only hopes he’s on the right side.

For someone who is not very knowledgeable about European history, I felt this was an engaging spin on it. The concepts were smart and the variations were refreshing especially where women were often in traditionally male leadership roles of the highest order. There’s a lot going on in this which kept the pace fast, but in and amongst missions and investigations, the romantic development was not fully realized enough for me (though what we got was nicely smexy), nor was the mystery in its conclusion (I’m still scratching my head a bit).

This looks to be the debut of Clara Merrick, and it contains a great premise. This ends with a solid HFN and as with many of the stories in this loosely connected series, there’s plenty of wiggle room for sequels galore and this is definitely one of them. Overall, I’m confident that fans of historical romance will surely have a good time! Enjoy!

Blurb

Austin Steele is my idol. He’s also the guy I can’t get enough of.

Everyone thinks they know who I am—one of pop’s biggest divos. They don’t know me at all. Austin Steele makes me want to see the real me, only there’s some problems:

We’re both omegas, he’s nineteen years my senior, he’s nursing old wounds, and he wants to keep what’s happening between us a secret.

I thought a one-night stand was all I wanted. Now it’s becoming so much more. But how can we look to the future when we can’t let go of our pasts?

Unapologetically Me is the third book in Offbeat Shifters, an m/m paranormal romance series with a continuing storyline. This book includes a misunderstood and unapologetic Arctic fox shifter, a caring capuchin monkey shifter, and a HFN ending. While it’s set in an alternate universe where omegas give birth, there are no pregnancy or birth scenes in this book.

Excerpt

“I can’t remember the last time I just hung out with someone before this week.” I laid my head on his shoulder. “That’s not true. It was right before my first album went viral.”

“That’s a long time.” Austin didn’t sound even remotely surprised.

“I guess you know how that feels, huh?”

“Yes.”

“The cupcakes will be cool enough to decorate.” I cleared my throat and stood.

We’d been having fun, and I didn’t want to drag the day down with drama about how lonely I was. Had been. Could I consign my loneliness to past tense now that I was spending time with Austin?

“I’ll help you make some icing if you want.”

“That might help,” Austin said around a chuckle.

I showed him the recipe I liked to use, loaded up a piping bag for him, and hand over hand showed him how to use it.

“You’ve gotta be gentle,” I said as I left him to it.

I carefully cut a hole out of the centre of each of my cupcakes, into which I pushed a fresh strawberry. Then I popped the top back on and began to ice them. I’d coloured my icing a soft shade of pink, much paler than the bright red of the strawberries. Using a controlled motion, I spiralled the icing onto the top of each cupcake.

“Bollocks!” Austin said.

I looked around to see that his hands were covered in icing, and the nozzle had shot off the piping bag onto one of his cupcakes. Icing dripped everywhere.

I couldn’t help but laugh. “You squeezed too hard, didn’t you?”

“It wasn’t coming out,” he grumbled.

He put the piping bag into a bowl, washed his hands, and grabbed a spoon. I watched for a moment as he dolloped icing onto the top of each cupcake. They looked anything but pretty. Still chuckling to myself, I finished mine off by sprinkling the tiny pieces of chopped strawberry over the icing.

“It’s obvious who’s won,” Austin said.

“No, it’s not. Don’t we have to do a taste test or something?”

“I guess so.”

“Get a couple of plates out.”

He complied. I cut one of his cupcakes in half and put a piece on each plate, then did the same with one of my own.

“Forks?”

“We could use our fingers?”

“I’m pretty sure that’s not how they do it on cooking shows.”

Austin smiled and grabbed a couple of forks. “We should taste the same one.” He handed me a fork. “Mine first.”

“Why?”

“So we’re saving the best until last? We’ll need to eat yours to get rid of the taste of mine.”

“They can’t be that bad.”

He raised his eyebrows. We both took a bite.

“Oh.” The cupcake was like a dry rock in my mouth.

“See what I mean?” Austin said around his own mouthful.

I grabbed some water to wash it down. “They’re not bad for a beginner. A little dry.”

“And heavy.”

“You might want to try adding a bit of milk when you’re mixing the ingredients. It helps to make the mixture light and fluffy.”

“What would help the taste?”

“Some vanilla-bean paste. It’s much better than vanilla extract,” I added, glancing at the small brown bottle of extract that Austin had bought but obviously not used in his own cakes.

Austin nodded thoughtfully before trying my cake. He closed his eyes and murmured his approval. “Now this is like an orgasm in my mouth.”

I snorted a laugh. “A what?”

“An orgasm in my mouth.” He devoured the rest of his half of the cupcake and then put his plate down. “You win.” He wrapped his arms around my waist.

“What do I win?”

“A kiss.” His lips and tongue tasted of strawberries and icing.

“Good prize.”
