Audiobook Review: A Few Good Fish (Fish Out of Water #3) by Amy Lane

A tomcat, a psychopath, and a psychic walk into the desert to rescue the men they love…. Can everybody make it out with their skin intact?

PI Jackson Rivers and Defense Attorney Ellery Cramer have barely recovered from last November, when stopping a serial killer nearly destroyed Jackson in both body and spirit.

But their previous investigation poked a new danger with a stick, forcing Jackson and Ellery to leave town so they can meet the snake in its den.

Jackson Rivers grew up with the mean streets as a classroom and he learned a long time ago not to give a damn about his own life. But he gets a whole new education when the enemy takes Ellery. The man who pulled his shattered pieces from darkness and stitched them back together again is in trouble, and Jackson’s only chance to save him rests in the hands of fragile allies he barely knows.

It’s going to take a little bit of luck to get these Few Good Fish out alive!

Narrator: Greg Tremblay

Jackson and Ellery are again swimming against the stream – investigating Owen’s past to find the person who trained him, who let him loose in society. So while the big bad from the first couple of books is dealt with – in a permanent way – it seems like he was just the beginning. There are secrets that people high on the food chain are willing to go to great lengths to keep hidden. It’s big and it’s bad and very, very dangerous.

Fish Out of Water is without a doubt my favourite Lane series. I love the mystery, the characters, not to mention Billy Bob the three legged cat. That being said, A Few More Fish is my least favourite in the series so far. The story just got too big and too unbelievable, not to mention that Ace and Sunny (from Racing the Sun) aren’t my favourite couple, so that cross-over didn’t quite work for me.

I love how far Jackson has come since we first met him, and seeing him now in a committed relationship is beautiful. His and Ellery’s relationship isn’t perfect, but it’s a work in progress. You feel the connection, and even though they might stumble at times you know they’ll pull through. With each book they grow stronger, they move forward. Don’t get me wrong, Jackson especially still have ways to go, but it’s still nice to see them making progress.

Greg Tremblay is music to my ears. I love listening to him and consider him to be one of my all-time favourite narrators out there. I love him narrating mystery and suspense books, there’s just something about that narration that really fits him. Once again he delivered a flawless performance. I mean he nails everything just right, the characters, the voices, the emotions he adds, the pacing. In short; everything was just right.

These books don’t really stand on their own; they build on each other, each a part of a whole, leaving things to be resolved. Knowing Jackson, a few more cars will be sacrificed in the future, all for the greater good of course.
