2nd Edition
Kyle and Jonathan were perfect for each other, the two halves that, once together, made a whole. And then one snowy night just before Parents’ Weekend on the campus of Hamilton University, Kyle drops a bomb: he’s breaking up with Jonathan.
Follow the couple through the stormy (in more ways than one) night that ensues. Why has Kyle suddenly decided to throw away something so precious and good?
The answers lie in their backgrounds, and will gradually come to light as a winter blizzard rages around the young couple.
Their tortured paths bring them to the covered bridge where their love had sprung to life on a hot summer day. But will the warmth of that memory and the heat of the love they once shared be enough to outclass the storm, and more importantly, bring them back together?
Reviewer: Shee Reader
Our story opens in the happy world of Jonathan getting all prepared for a romantic and sexy weekend with his boyfriend as their college dorms empty out for the three day holiday weekend. All Jonathan really needs is his lover to arrive.
Enter Kyle who promptly beaks up with Jonathan with a few words and walks away. Just that short conversation and Jonathan’s heart is broken.
What follows is a short story of a relationship that hadn’t been in place long, but was a deeply loving one. What had driven these two you young lovers apart?
Jonathan spends some time dwelling on the heartbreak, and then his mom calls. Jonathan’s mom is a wonderful character, the kind of parent we should all strive to be. We also get a look into Kyle’s relationship with his mom. She’s a hardworking mom doing her best for her son.
I won’t spoil the ending by revealing what happens, but safe to say, my need for a happy ever after is satisfied!
This is a short novella full of emotion and wisdom. It was nicely written and enjoyable, the only improvement I’d make would be to make it longer - luckily for me, Rick has some full length novels out there I’ll be sure to dive in to.

Synopsis
Lieutenant Apollo Floros can ace tactical training missions, but being a single dad to his twin daughters is more than he can handle. He needs live-in help, and he's lucky a friend's younger brother needs a place to stay. He's surprised to see Dylan all grown up with a college degree…and a college athlete's body. Apollo's widowed heart may still be broken, but Dylan has his blood heating up.It's been eight years since the teenage Dylan followed Apollo around like a lovesick puppy, and it's time he showed Lieutenant Hard-to-Please that he's all man now—an adult who's fully capable of choosing responsibility over lust. He can handle Apollo's muscular sex appeal, but Apollo the caring father? Dylan can't afford to fall for that guy. He's determined to hold out for someone who's able to love him back, not someone who only sees him as a kid brother.
Apollo is shocked by the intensity of his attraction to Dylan. Maybe some no-strings summer fun will bring this former SEAL back to life. But the combination of scorching desire and warm affection is more than he'd expected, and the emotion between them scares him senseless. No fling lasts forever, and Apollo will need to decide what's more important—his past or his future—if he wants to keep Dylan in his life.
Book Two of the Out of Uniform series

**This is from the first chapter**Hamburger. Onions. Pickles. Ketchup. Buns. Buns.
Well, hello, there. Possibly the most perfect specimen Apollo had ever seen was bent over in the bakery aisle at Sprouts, looking at a rack of organic cookies. High. Tight. Round. Attached to muscular legs poking out of board shorts, the kind of legs that suggested a serious investment in a sport or fitness. He wasn’t going to do more than look, but even when he’d been with Neal, he hadn’t been blind, and it was nice to know perfection like this guy existed in the world.
It was like swimming by a perfect coral reef on a dive or the blue of a cloudless sky right before a jump—
Wink. Fuck. The guy straightened before Apollo could look away and caught Apollo staring, and instead of blushing or serving him with the angry glare he deserved, he gave Apollo a saucy wink. It was the sort of wink that a decade ago would have had Apollo crossing the shiny linoleum and getting the guy’s number, but those days were long gone.
Instead he grabbed the closest twelve pack of hamburger buns and one of hot dog buns and headed to the next aisle. Those were the only kind of buns he had any business letting himself be distracted by. He was a father for crying out loud, not some single guy out treating the natural grocery store like his own personal pickup joint. Reflexively, he rubbed his ring with the side of his pinky, making it spin on his ring finger. Yeah. No more looking.
“Apollo! How are you?” Bridget from down the street almost ran her cart into his as he navigated the aisles. Her red-haired toddler waved at him from the basket.
Hell. He knew he should have brought at least one of the girls shopping. Then Bridget could have focused on the kids, and not his least favorite question in the universe.
“Hanging in there.” Apollo gave her a practiced a smile. “Good” would be a lie and no one wanted to hear “same as yesterday,” which was closer to the truth. But what the Bridgets of the world all wanted to hear was that Apollo was moving on—like time was the magic cure for the hole in his heart. “Having some people over for a barbecue later. Apologies if anyone parks in front of your place.”
“Oh, no worries.” Bridget patted his arm. “Having friends is so important.”
“Yeah, it is,” Apollo agreed because Bridget was a nice person, but inwardly his teeth gnashed together. He was so tired of well-meaning people telling him what was good for him when not a damn one of their suggestions would bring Neal back. “I better get on with my list.”
“You do that. And be sure and let us know if you need anything.”
Apollo nodded. Two years. It had been two years of neighbors and friends stopping him like this, making kind offers, but none of them able to do the one thing he wanted more than anything.
Fuck. Snap out of it, Lieutenant. No one wants your mopey ass around on this sunny May weekend. And it was an absolutely gorgeous day, perfect for playing with the girls outside and kicking back a few beers with his friends. He wasn’t on duty and had three consecutive days off for the first time in a long time. No sense dwelling on sad shit. Time to get stuff done.
Find something else to focus on.
Like that perfect ass?
No. Absolutely not that. Like…pickles. Lots and lots of pickles.
He saw Mr. Perfect Butt again in the juice aisle, and it was damn hard to keep his resolution to stick to shopping. The guy was model cute—curly hair falling just so over his forehead, sparkling eyes, chiseled jaw, and a tight T-shirt advertising a British soccer team showing off a defined chest and tight stomach. The guy smiled at him again and looked like he might want to speak, so Apollo grabbed the juice boxes for the girls and got out of there like he’d just launched a flash bang in the guy’s direction.
At the checkout, Mr. Perfect Butt was ahead of him in the only line that seemed to be moving. Apollo very carefully did not look at his butt again and busied himself grabbing some gum and trying to give off “don’t talk to me” vibes.
But those vibes seemed to be an utter failure as the guy turned, offering another movie-star-worthy grin. “You want to go first?” His voice was husky, like every word was a secret.
“I’m good,” Apollo said.
The man nodded, shy smile teasing the edges of his mouth, making his blue eyes dance. “You know—”
“ID please.” The cashier interrupted whatever flirtation the guy had planned as his six pack of beer went across the scanner.
“Oh, yeah.” A faint red flush spread up the guy’s neck. Oh hell. He wasn’t just younger than Apollo. He was a kid. A kid who still got carded, and rightfully so with that baby face. What the hell had Apollo been thinking, admiring his body?
Apollo focused on unloading his own groceries, making neat rows for the cashier, and making sure the buns wouldn’t get squished.
Buns. Nope. Not going there. The kid hung around after paying for his groceries, mouth moving as if he were debating speaking, but Apollo kept his attention squarely on the cashier.
No more looking. Remember who—what—you are now. When he finally looked up, perfect butt guy was gone, and if Apollo felt a twinge of regret for being a bit on the rude side, he squashed it quickly. Wasn’t like he’d ever see the guy again anyway.

I’m so excited to be here today, celebrating the release of AT ATTENTION. In another post on this blog tour, I talked about how Apollo, my widowed navy SEAL hero, loves to cook in big batches. His love interest, Dylan, his best friend’s little brother is awed by this talent almost as much as Apollo’s SEAL-honed muscles and bad-ass attitude.
But say you get into cooking in larger batches, and you’ve got a freezer full of cooked chicken pieces and a pantry full of staples, how do you turn those ingredients into dinner in under an hour? The answer is to make sure you have quick-cooking ingredients like orzo on hand.
Apollo makes an orzo casserole at one point in the book, and while his exact recipe is top-secret, I thought I’d share one that I make for my family. What’s nice about this is that while it’s in the oven, you can do other stuff. Also, simply by switching the seasoning for Italian, using Italian tomatoes, and mozzarella as the cheese, you can get a whole different flavor profile.
Cheesy Southwestern Orzo Casserole (modified greatly from an allrecipes.com recipe)
Ingredients
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 2 cups cubed, cooked chicken meat. (Approximately 2 cooked breasts or ½ a roast chicken or 1 pound raw chicken, browned and cooked)
- 1 packet Taco/Mexican seasoning
- 1 (10 ounce) can diced tomatoes and green chile peppers, undrained
- 1 cup dried orzo
- 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese or a Mexican cheese blend
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a large oven-safe Dutch oven (or saucepan) combine broth, undrained tomatoes and orzo. Bring to boiling. Stir in chicken. No need to defrost if using frozen, pre-cooked chicken. If using the Dutch oven, you’re ready to pop it into the oven. Otherwise, transfer mixture to a 2-quart baking dish.
- Bake, covered, for 25 to 30 minutes or until pasta is tender. Uncover and sprinkle with cheese during last 10 minutes of baking. Let stand, covered, for 10 minutes before serving.
- Possible add-ins prior to baking: black olives, mushrooms, diced zucchini, black or red beans.
Enjoy! And if you’d like to see all the trouble Apollo finds himself in with Dylan, be sure to check out AT ATTENTION!

Audiobook Review: Turning the Page by Andrew Grey
Malcolm Webber is still grieving the loss of his partner of twenty years to cancer. He’s buried his mind and feelings in his legal work and isn’t looking for another relationship. He isn’t expecting to feel such a strong attraction when he meets Hans Erickson—especially since the man is quite a bit younger than him.
Hans is an adventure writer with an exciting lifestyle to match. When he needs a tax attorney to straighten out an error with the IRS, he ends up on the other side of the handsome Malcolm’s desk. The heat between them is undeniable, but business has to come first. When it’s concluded, Hans leaps on the chance to make his move.
Malcolm isn’t sure he’s ready for the next chapter in his life. Hans is so young and active that Malcolm worries he won’t be able to hold his interest for long. Just when he’s convinced himself to take the risk and turn the page, problems at the law office threaten to end their love story before it can really begin.
Listening Length: 5 hours 59 minutes

Malcolm is grieving the loss of his partner of over 20 years to cancer, and has buried himself in his job as a tax attorney. He is the epitome of steady, solid, quiet man who isn’t looking for romance despite the well meaning interference of devoted assistant and his meddling brother.
Hans is an adventure writer with a lifestyle to match who finds himself on the wrong side of the IRS and in need of a good attorney. Hans sits himself across the desk from handsome Malcolm and there is instant attraction, but there is business that must be attended to first. Once that is concluded, and after a chance meeting, Hans leaps at the chance to get to know Malcolm.
Malcolm is interested in Hans, despite the guilt at moving on, but worries he is too old and set in his ways to keep up with Hans, or maintain Hans’ interest for long.
What follows is a lovely rolling story including adventures, drama, self doubt, bad guys and health threats. I rooted for the guys from the outset and loved the cast of supporting characters. The premise of having to start again past the first flush of youth resonates throughout the story, and is meaningfully done.
The narration is super, with such a yummy nordic accent for Hans, that I actually listened to the book twice over!
The ending is happy, but it isn’t a perfectly smooth path. I really enjoyed it.

Review: Jerricho’s Freedom by Jake C. Wallace
2nd Edition
As prince of the Anzuni demon clan, Jerricho’s entire life has been planned for him. At twenty-five, he will become the crown prince of the Anzuni, marry a man chosen by his parents, and bear his husband’s children all without choice. If that wasn’t enough, he must remain a virgin until his wedding night. To do otherwise would spark an unimaginable scandal.
With only ten months until his twenty-fifth birthday, the walls close in on Jerry, and the realization that he will lose his small apartment, his job at the library, and his freedom hits hard. But that’s nothing compared to losing the man he loves. Rex is a smart and sexy construction foreman with a keen interest in demon “mythology.” When Jerry and Rex give in to spending one night together, their indiscretion can’t be kept secret for long. But that’s only the beginning of their problems.
Someone wants to harness the power of Jerry’s bloodline and his ability to conceive—someone with designs on horrifying experiments, sex slavery, and murder. Jerry and Rex are at the mercy of power-hungry sadists. With no one left to trust, they must fight for each other, their freedom—and their unborn child.
First Edition published by Amber Quill Press/Amber Allure, 2015.
This was actually a lot darker than I expected it to be and it really threw me off. I wasn’t in the right frame of mind for this kind of story so I will try my best to review it fairly.
I think this story will appeal to a lot of die-hard dark erotic romance fans. Especially if they’re a fan of Mpreg. I’ll talk about the Mpreg a little later in the review though.
This story starts off light, but as the blurb says, there is an element of capture and imprisonment, as well as rape, and forced breeding.
Jerry was a fun character in the beginning. I liked his spark and his independence. The world building around the Demon clan was well done, and I found the concept interesting and well thought out. I liked the supporting characters too. His family and the staff at his parents home. They all gave me warm fuzzies for the most part.
The sexual tension between Jerry and Rex was great. Even the short time they had together was convincing. I enjoyed their relationship building, and I found I liked them both. I wanted them to be together.
It’s going to be hard to write this without spoilers, so if I do add a minor spoiler, I’m sorry.
Where this became an issue for me was the plot around the experimentation and the sex-slavery. Interesting, since I am known to enjoy some really dark stuff. I think the problem was this whole plot centred around a pregnant male Demon and the repetition of the routine surrounding the imprisonment. My heart and head just wasn’t in it. I found myself wishing the story was over. It was too drawn out. There was too much angst. I found it really hard to follow the plot and the twists and turns of the story.
I have to say the Mpreg stuff was okay at first. It was explained well enough, and I found that satisfactory. What was missing was something probably only a few people would consider (or maybe not, I don’t know, maybe I’m weird and overly analytical, or maybe it will be obvious to everyone). How are they feeding this baby? There was nothing in the story about it. Jerry didn’t grow boobs for lactation. And you know, I’d probably go along with that, if there was another evolutionary way that the baby would be fed. It’s something that annoyed me. Petty, maybe, but it is important to me, because it is a gap in world building, and to me a pretty significant one. Men can lactate, so I’m not sure why this wasn’t used.
While it wasn’t the right time for me to read this, I still appreciated it as a well written story. I think it was a little longer than it needed to be, but that’s only my opinion, and may have more to do with how I was feeling as I read the story. If there weren’t so many plot twists, I think I would have handled it better. While a lot of the plot was explained well, some of it came out of left field and I didn’t know how to absorb it all. I can’t say all of them are good for the story. And the angst. It was a little too overwhelming for me (this is a draw for some though, so go ahead, get your angst on).
I’d recommend this only for people who are interested in dark paranormal stories with Mpreg. It may be a bit much for those who aren’t used to this element of writing.

Synopsis
Fifteen-year-old Tyler Buckspan lives with his mom and grandmother in 1960s Cassadaga, a Florida community where spiritual “mediums” ply their trade. The mediums—Tyler’s grandmother among them—read palms and tarot cards, conduct séances and speak with the dead.Tyler’s a loner, a bookish boy with few interests, until his half-brother Devin, nineteen and a convicted arsonist, comes to live in Tyler’s home. For years, Tyler has ignored his attraction to other boys. But with Devin in the house, Tyler can’t deny his urges any longer. He falls hopelessly in love with his miscreant half-brother, and with the sport of basketball, once Devin teaches Tyler the finer points of the game.
In a time when love between men was forbidden, even criminalized, can Tyler find the love he needs from another boy? And is Devin a person to be trusted? Is he truly clairvoyant, or simply a con artist playing Tyler and others for fools? What does Devin really know about a local murder? And can Tyler trust his own psychic twinges?

On a Saturday afternoon in November, I worked a crossword puzzle, seated on Grandma’s sofa, when a knock sounded at the front door. An auburn-haired guy Devin’s age stood on the porch. He held a rolled-up blanket under his arm and a six-pack of beer dangled from his fingertips. His cheekbones were prominent, his deep-set eyes cobalt blue, his skin was light as ivory.
“Devin home?” he asked in a scratchy baritone.
After I let him in, I pointed to the staircase. “Second room on the left.”
Minutes later, the two descended, Devin clutching bath towels and his cigarettes.
“Tyler,” he said, pointing his thumb at the other guy, “this is Jesse. He works with me at the brickyard.” Jesse raised a palm.
Jesse was slim like Devin, about the same height, also dressed in jeans, sneakers, and a T-shirt.
“We’re going for a swim,” Devin said. “I’ll see you later.”
Through a window, I watched them walk down the sidewalk, conversing and laughing, both smoking cigarettes. Right away, I felt jealous. After all, I was the one who’d shown Devin the spring. He should only bathe there with me, not this Jesse guy, right? I moistened my lips, watching Devin’s behind twitch in the seat of his jeans. My hands hung at my hips and my fingers flexed. Would the two of them get naked? If so, what would Jesse’s body look like?
Go ahead, chickenshit. Why not find out?
***
I snagged my jeans on the lumber company’s barbed-wire fence, wincing when I heard the denim rip. The jeans were new—intended only for school—and I’d surely receive a tongue-lashing from Mom when she saw the damage.
Damn.
For mid-November, the weather was steamy. My armpits moistened as I crept along the path leading to the spring. Sunlight filtered through trees; it warmed my shoulders. The only sound I heard was the crunching of pine needles beneath my sneakers. Rain had fallen the night before, and now the forest smelled of wet bark and damp earth.
I hadn’t visited the spring since I’d taken Devin there, and the memory caused a tingle in my briefs. I’d only seen him naked that one time.
I came to a tree felled and blackened by a lightning bolt. The trunk was as big around as an oil barrel. This meant the spring was only twenty or thirty yards ahead. After leaving the trail, I took care when parting undergrowth, trying to be quiet. I made my way toward the spring, bending forward at the waist and keeping my head low. Already, my pulse quickened. I’d never spied on someone before, and the thought of peeping at Devin and Jesse seemed deliciously wicked.
I expected to hear their voices when I drew close to the spring, but I didn’t, and then I crinkled my forehead in puzzlement.
Why weren’t they talking? What were they up to?
I passed through a bank of saw palmettos. Sunlight glittered on the spring’s surface. Above me, a squirrel barked on a limb; its bushy tail twitched. I straightened my spine, pulled aside a palmetto frond, and….
Jee-zus.
Devin and Jesse were naked, about thirty feet from me.
Droplets of spring water glistened on their skins. Their hair was damp, but they were not bathing, not now. They lay upon Jesse’s blanket. Their heads bobbed, and their lips smacked. A handful of Jesse’s auburn hair fell across his face, waving like a flag when his head moved.
My knees weakened while my breathing accelerated and sweat trickled down my ribs; I had never seen such a thing. I watched in fascination for several minutes, licking my lips and flexing my fingers. What must their bodies feel like?
What thoughts dwelled in their heads? And weren’t they ashamed? Wasn’t their brand of sex an abomination?
I unbuttoned my jeans and lowered the zipper, taking care not to make any noise. Then I spit in my hand and touched myself, my gaze fixed upon Devin and Jesse. I felt more sexually excited than I’d ever been. Both guys were handsome, their bodies lean and muscled. I especially liked Devin’s buttocks; they were round as melons, porcelain white, and I longed to touch them.
Devin brought his face to Jesse’s, and their mouths met.
For the first time in my life, I saw two males kiss. The vision made me shudder, and I longed to trade places with Jesse.
What does it feel like, having sex with another guy? Especially when you’re in love with him?
When I reached orgasm, I felt as if someone had nudged me with a cattle prod. Purple spots appeared before my eyes; I gasped for air and my scalp prickled. I had never, ever experienced such excitement.
I stood there, catching my breath and shaking my head in wonderment. I’ve just witnessed a secret ceremony of sorts: the kind most people wouldn’t even try to understand.
I closed my eyes and swallowed.
One day I’ll taste another guy’s skin and lips, I know I will.
Okay, all right…
At the spring that November afternoon, Devin had given himself to Jesse. But while my breathing slowed and my body relaxed, I knew Devin had shared something special with me as well.
He had given me—the queerest of boys—a glimpse of what I needed to be happy.Purchase

Review: Shards in the Sun (The Heart of Texas #1) by Trina Lane
The heart of Texas beats strong, fuelled by the love between two men whose lives are interwoven like the long grass of the hill country they call home.
Brandon Blackstun has spent the last decade moving on from the hellish halls of high school. With an invitation to his reunion in hand, he plans to show his former classmates that not only did the repeated occurrences of being slammed into lockers not cause brain damage, but he’s now a successful cover artist for the very books they buy off the shelves.
Tyler Synder was determined to not follow in his father’s footsteps as head of the International Corporation that bears the family name. Instead his heart is tied to the beat of his horses’ thundering hooves. He operates a breeding program for Tennessee Walkers and guest ranch a couple of hours from the urban luxury of Dallas where he was raised.
The two men might live very different lives, but the heat between them is hotter than any Texas sun. With the help—or meddling—of an unlikely pair of friends, the two explore a relationship that stirs something deep inside them. Distance and misunderstandings force Tyler and Brandon to consider whether the fulfilment they’ve experienced in each other’s arms is worth the sacrifice of the lives they’d built individually.
Texas may be the second biggest state in the union, but is it large enough to embrace the love between these two men or will their deeply hidden fears shatter the boundaries of their hearts?
Sometimes a book doesn’t work for you. This was one of those books for me.
Let’s see if I can keep this short?
We start out decent with Brandon attending his high school reunion with his BFF Jess and I was cringing with him. I haven’t attended any of my reunions because high school was crap for me but I get Brandon wanting to go back and show that he’s made something of himself. At his reunion, or rather at the bar before, he eyes a hottie cowboy that goes nowhere because he sucks at flirting and then we meet Javier, the dude who shoved Brandon’s head into lockers, who is now out of the closet. Javier seems to want to make amends with Brandon but… I NEVER liked Javier, is was slimy and just not someone I cared about and lucky me, got more of him in the book. Ugh.
When Brandon is out to dinner as friends with Javier, he sees hottie cowboy again and hottie cowboy, aka Tyler, happens to be Javier’s ex-boyfriend and drama happens. I am totally okay with the ex-boyfriend deal but um, why the hell did I need to know about Javier and his kinks when it has nothing to do with Brandon and Tyler???
Anyway. The drama with Javier and Tyler makes Brandon run away from Tyler but then they decide to give this “connection” a go even though they live 2 hrs away from one another. Blah blah blah…
I never felt the connection or chemistry with Brandon and Tyler and while each man should be interesting, they weren’t. Brandon works at a library but not a librarian and designs book covers in his spare time. That was kinda interesting but it fell off the page quick and Tyler is an honest to goodness cowboy but the pages and pages on his ranch were full of info dropping that I got bored and could care less. Together? Well, they weren’t too exciting together either. They were just so bland.
The dirty talk should have been hot, the sex, it should have been really hot but I skimmed the majority of it. It felt mechanical and stunted that I lost interest during foreplay.
Good lord. This was just, well… boring to me. It took me days to get through it and I kept finding other things to read, watch or do but read this.
I cannot believe the end and who I think will be the MC of the next book… just nope. No thanks.

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT
He sat down next to me. “I’m confused then.”
I turned and faced him. “Welcome to the club.”
He frowned. “What are you confused about, Lucas?” I lifted the gun. It gleamed in the light. It felt heavy in my hand. It felt even heavier in my heart. “This,” I said. “This is what I’m confused about.” Then I pointed at him— with my free hand, not with the gun. “And I’m confused about you.”
His face scrunched up. “Me? What did I do?”
“Really?” I said. “You don’t know?”
He shrugged. “Not a clue, Lucas. Not a clue.”
I stood up. Anger rose from my gut. Anger and sadness. “You told me to shoot, Craig. You told me to shoot someone.”
He stared up at me. “Given that he was the bad guy and eager to get the gun back from you, shoot seemed the best option. Plus, had he gotten the gun back, he was going to kill the hostages.”
“In theory.”
He shrugged. “Fine, in theory. But theories often prove to be facts.” He stood. He faced me. “He was the bad guy, Lucas. He was the bad guy and you’re the good guy. If he got shot, he had it coming to him.”
I cringed. A pain shot through my chest. “How can you say that?”
He pointed to his mouth. “With this.” He then pointed to his head. “And this.”
Me, I pointed to his heart. “What about this?”
His shrug repeated. “The head has to rule here, Lucas. It’s the only way.”
I thought to object, but realized it wouldn’t get me anywhere. “I, um, guess we’ll have to agree to disagree on that then.”

Group Review: At Attention (Out of Uniform, #2) by Annabeth Albert
Lieutenant Apollo Floros can ace tactical training missions, but being a single dad to his twin daughters is more than he can handle. He needs live-in help, and he's lucky a friend's younger brother needs a place to stay. He's surprised to see Dylan all grown up with a college degree…and a college athlete's body. Apollo's widowed heart may still be broken, but Dylan has his blood heating up.
It's been eight years since the teenage Dylan followed Apollo around like a lovesick puppy, and it's time he showed Lieutenant Hard-to-Please that he's all man now—an adult who's fully capable of choosing responsibility over lust.
Adam - 3 Hearts
‘At Attention’ delivers what I’d expect from Annabeth Albert - complex characters, some hot sex, a good dose of angst, and a sweet happy ever after.
Apollo Floros, a SEALs lieutenant, is a complete grouch. Raising his two girls alone after the death of his husband, Apollo is very protective of his family and has a tough exterior. He only lets his guard down for his girls.
It took a while to get used to Apollo, given how standoffish he was and the way he treated Dylan.
Dylan is Apollo’s best friend’s younger brother. When Dylan was a teenager, he idolized Apollo. Fresh out of university, Dylan just wants to help Apollo over the summer with the girls while he looks for a permanent job.
Dylan doesn’t set out to woo Apollo, but he also wouldn’t say no if things went that direction.
Dylan and Apollo’s early interactions are a bit awkward, but charged with a sexual tension you could cut with a knife. Apollo can’t help but take a look at Dylan all grown up, but he rebuffs Dylan’s flirting.
Grief is a real thing in this book. Most of Apollo’s reluctance to give in to what he wants with Dylan comes from him still mourning his deceased husband, Neal. Apollo thought that Neal was it for him, so thinking about Dylan seems like a betrayal of what they had.
But slowly, Dylan works his way under Apollo’s walls. Not only is Dylan fantastic with the girls, but he reminds Apollo that there’s more to life than just existing.
When Apollo finally gives in, he and Dylan light up the sheets. They are hot. If you like rough sex in front of mirrors and a total alpha top, you won’t be disappointed.
But Apollo’s grief and guilt don’t quit. This is where I lost some of my patience with him. Apollo plays hot and cold throughout the book, hurting Dylan and his daughters in the process. I understood where Apollo was coming from, but the repetitive cycle made me lose some interest around two-thirds in.
However, I really liked the ending. The way Apollo made amends made me believe that he and Dylan really did have what it takes to make it in the long run, and that their emotional connection was just as strong as their physical connection.
Overall, this was an enjoyable read. Recommended if you’re looking for a contemporary MM romance with a strong focus on family and healing.
Optimist ♰King's Wench♰ - 2 Hearts
Unpopular Opinion Ahead. Please don't stone me.
If you had told me prior to reading this I'd be rating it anything less than 4 hearts I would've been all, 'the hell you say!' and maybe hit your face with my glove (lightly, because lady). Just reading the blurb had me all lightheaded with an overwhelming urge to spin around in a field of bluebonnets. I mean, age difference, size difference, second chance romance, possessive MC all reduce me to zombie arms and possible drooling. I just knew At Attention was going to be the turn-the-corner book betwixt me and this author.
Here’s the thing, though, for all of Albert’s devoted fans At Attention will likely work for you. My success with Albert is spotty at best. She seems to have her own romance algorithm that includes this push-pull thing between protagonists. The reasons vary and sometimes it works for me and sometimes it doesn’t. This time it didn’t.
What happened here was Apollo’s incessant lying to himself and Dylan about his feelings got old. He strings him along. He advances and retreats again and again. Sometimes an author can make this push/pull thing work for me if they show me and make me believe there’s a valid and compelling reason for it. I need lots of exposition and character building so I can truly understand what motivates them to hurt their love interest again and again. I need to feel it and, more importantly, to sympathize with the character's action and that didn’t happen. Because Apollo.
He really is. No one loves a grump more than I but there’s a big difference between grump and asshat. He’s controlling, jealous, the possessiveness I had hoped would have my eyebrows waggling skidded sideways into 'whoa whoa, slow your roll there, craycraybenaynay' territory with a quickness. Add to that his mood changes on a dime and the next thing I knew we were back to…
It made my head spin and it made me feel sorry for poor Dylan. Apollo’s mercurial nature negatively impacts his self-image, making him feel unworthy, lesser which made me want to tell him to RUN FORRR-REST RUUUUNNNNN!!!!! and sapped all the good feels I had going into this book.
I need for my couples to be happy for a certain period of time in a narrative and not just at the end. There needs to be a balance so I understand what it is they’re fighting for beyond sexual chemistry. Why are they so invested in each other? The truth is Apollo and Dylan are hardly together. Sure, you can bet when they are they’re going to have some hot mirror sex with a side of dirty talk *grunts* but then you can bet the farm Apollo’s going to turn arctic afterwards, like right afterwards. Can I not enjoy a lil glow?
No. Because. For the cheap seats in the back.
He gives a myriad of excuses as to why they won’t work-their age difference, his mourning, Dylan’s future plans-but it all rang hollow; it felt like drama for drama’s sake. Especially when I had his POV which didn’t match his hateful and, at times, cruel words and actions. All the excuses and dramatics made Apollo look like a fickle teen when he’s the one that supposedly has all the life experience and wisdom. Dylan at 23 puts him to shame in both the communication and acting like an adult departments.
So, the sex is hot and I did like Dylan but those weren’t enough to save this read for me. Obviously, my opinions are my own and YMMV.

I've seen this author's work, perused the blurbs and I didn't bite.
But this blurb was the prettiest show pony with SRAL approved buzz words and themes:
RING A DING DING!!! GUESS WHO IS COMING HOME WITH ME?
Of course, I lassoed the hell out of this book and gobbled all the words.
Being as it's my first Annabeth Albert read, I'm not sure how it rates on the Annabeth Albert scale. If this was very on her A-game or there's better? *shrugs*
I was entertained and had a great time reading At Attention.
23 year-old Dylan gets a chance of his lifetime when his unrequited crush hires and moves him in his San Diego home for the summer. Dylan's crush, 34 year old Apollo needs a nanny to take care of his adorable 4 year old twins whole Apollo works on a naval base. This book can be read as a standalone, I wasn't lost. And I'm curious about the previous and future pairings.
Dylan tries to tamp down his lusty feelings as Apollo works through his grief. Two years has passed but there is no time limit on grieving. And Apollo is a grumpy, more reserved bundle of emotions. He would take time to start to contemplate having feelings for another man. Luckily, Apollo's libido isn't broken. And try as he might, he can't deny the easiness he has with Dylan. The camaraderie and sharing his daily worries of being a single parent added more base to their friendship foundation formed with Dylan was just a teen.
The story is a good mix of nerdy, adorable, (lightly) angsty, sexy and sweet. Dylan can't stop his feelings from blooming once again. Apollo sees his friend's kid brother in a new light, an adult. They try going the friendship route on equal terms, but their bodies won't be denied.
The sex in this book?
The sex was...hot. If I had to give it a flavor, it's hot vanilla custard. Sweet, varied and with a hint of spice. (highlights: intercrural (yay!), frottage, light domination/ control a smidge of exhibition) There is mirror sex but, it could've been hotter in my opinion. I might have been spoiled by a hotter mirror scene in another NA series I've read.
The grieving and the time given for Apollo to work through his process was more important factor for me. Apollo plays hot and cold. The ghost of his lover is one he surrounds himself with daily and it's hard to break through. Dylan makes him crack through the shell. Plus, he's possessive and doesn't want any other guy getting Dylan's time. He wants it all to his self. That was bonus characteristics that I enjoy. The possessiveness and the control in the bedroom (of course).
The best bonus of all? Dylan wasn't a pushover. And he spoke his mind even if might hurt, be it himself or Apollo. I'm #teamDylan all day!
This story was really good. Not Earth shattering, or extremely memorable. For all themes it had going on, it worked. The writing is easy to read, all of the characters are likeable. All of them from kids to grandmas. I really liked how it ended, well maybe before the fluffed ending. It was added sugar I could have done without. But HEA lovers will totes lurve it.
This couple totally worked for me and I see them having a long loving future ahead of them.
Recommended for readers who enjoy contemporary, like the tropes I listed and wallow in second chance romance.
Come join me as I ride my pretty pony into the sunset.
