Synopsis

When Lander accepts a dare to go into
the forest at night, he thinks it’ll be easy. He just needs to walk in and then
come out, right? But that’s easier said than done. It’s like the trees have a
mind of their own, and they are stopping him from finding his way back. There
were always stories of people getting lost forever in the forest, but Lander
had never considered they might be true.

Yban has been in the forest a long time
and he knows it like no other—but he comes with his own secrets. He disappears
every day, and he won’t tell Lander where he goes. But during the dark hours,
Lander gets to know him and starts unwrapping the layers that surround him.

The fire that keeps them warm in the
forest isn’t the only spark between them; will their growing relationship
survive Lander’s determination to find the way out, or will Yban’s past
mistakes keep them hidden in the forest forever?

“He won’t come.”

“He’ll be hiding under his bed, the
coward.”

“Did you see his face when you dared
him? I’m sure he peed his pants just thinking about it.”

The men standing on the road—a few feet
away from where Lander stood—started laughing and clapping one another on the
back. He was sure they didn’t know he was there, not that it would have
mattered to them. He was familiar enough with the things they were saying about
him.

Earlier that afternoon, they’d seen him
studying and started on their usual abuse. Lander could generally tune them out
easily enough, but he’d had an argument with his parents that morning and he’d
already been on edge. So when they’d told him he wouldn’t dare to go into the
forest alone, his stubborn streak had shown up, and he’d set out to prove them
wrong. Of course, then they’d changed their terms and dared him to go into the
forest at night.

Lander was determined to prove to them
he could do it. All his life, he had only wanted to fit in with the other kids,
but he had always been the outsider, the weird kid no one wanted to play with,
the one always left alone. He’d longed for company, for someone to share his
time with, and instead he’d encountered barbs and jabs directed his way just
because he was a bit different. In the end, being alone was safer, and he’d
grown used to it. But there was still a small part of him that wanted to belong
to a group, and it was that part that had risen to the bait when they’d made
their way towards him, so confident in their abuse that he couldn’t help but
take them up on it, even though he knew it would be a mistake.

He took a deep breath and stepped out of
the shadows, feeling a vindictive pleasure at seeing the surprise on their
faces. They truly hadn’t expected him to come.

“Well, well, well… Look who decided to
show up after all. Have you come to tell us to stop wasting our time and just
go home?” One of them sneered at Lander, and his resolve doubled.

Lander made sure to keep his head high
and not to let his voice tremble when he answered. “I’m here to go into the
forest. That’s what you wanted, isn’t it?”

They shared a few confused looks,
probably not knowing what to make of this version of Lander, the one who was
actually standing up to them. After a moment, the leader just shrugged and
started walking. He was used to his little band following him without question
and clearly expected Lander to do the same. Lander wanted to get this over
with, so this time he did what the leader wanted without complaint.

They walked like soldiers, the
blustering young men from before he’d made his appearance all but gone. Lander
guessed it was probably a habit they had picked up from their training—they’d
all shown an affinity for offensive magic and had started training with the
guards the year before. Lander had an affinity for healing magic, but his
talent was not important enough that any of the village healers wanted to take
him on as an apprentice, so he’d been studying and trying to learn everything
he could on his own. Not that he would ever be a doctor, but he wanted to help,
and healing magic could be useful in a lot of different ways people didn’t
often think about. He’d had many arguments with his parents about that very
topic, including the one that led to him following this group to the edge of
the forest.

He’d never been so close to this place.
He’d seen it, even studied it from afar, but he’d never stepped a foot into the
tree line. As far as he knew, no one in the village had. Ever since he was
little, he’d listened to people telling stories about the forest, stories
designed to scare little kids. And as he grew up, he could tell that the kids
weren’t the only ones afraid of the forest. Everyone feared the darkness. No
one dared go into it, not even during the day. He had always wondered why
because he didn’t think the stories about ghosts and the forest making people
disappear were true. But apparently he was about to find out if there was any
truth to them.

The four trainees were looking at him
with smug smiles, and he would have liked nothing better than to wipe them off
their faces. But he was not stupid enough to go against four men, especially
not trained ones. However, there was another way for him to stop them from
smiling; it just involved him going somewhere no one had ventured in ages, a
place he had been taught to fear since he was old enough to sleep in a bed
instead of a cot.

Lander refused to let them see his fear,
so he steeled himself and walked to the edge of the forest, looking in. He
could see only the trees, since the world between them was made of shadows.

“Step in and then come out, right?”

The four of them looked at him
expectantly, probably waiting for him to turn around and run back to the city.
There was no chance of that happening now.

As always, it was their leader who
spoke. “Yes. But not just stepping into the edge. You need to go far enough
that we don’t see you anymore. We’ll tell you when that is. And then you can
come back, and we’ll never call you a coward again.”

Lander nodded and approached the edge of
the tree line slowly. With a small step, he was inside the forest. He breathed
in the smell of the trees, the wildlife, and the darkness, getting overwhelmed
with so many new scents. He didn’t look back but, instead, kept walking until
the darkness surrounded him. There must have been noises in the forest, but his
heart was beating so hard that the only thing he could hear was the sound of it
drumming inside his chest. He looked back then, intending to ask if this was
far enough—he should have known they wouldn’t say anything—but the tree line
had disappeared.

Davey’s Rule #86: A good Daddy will never lie to his boy… even by omission.
Travis Miller has a pretty solid life in the small California beach town he calls home. He’s working his way up in the district attorney’s office, he owns a home with an ocean view, and he has close ties with his family. Life is good. If only he could find a sweet boy to call his own, life would be… perfect.
Adam Nichols’ life has never been easy. Growing up in foster care taught him to be strong, so finding himself in a violent relationship was a shock. Now that he's finally free of it, he faces new problems. He's jobless, homeless, and terrified of starting from scratch.
With a little help from an old friend, Adam discovers a whole new world. He goes from rock bottom to renting a room from a hot assistant DA and working at Daddy’s Lap, a kink club that opens his vanilla eyes to things he’d never imagined. His new roommate is a balm to Adam’s damaged soul. The tender way Travis cares for him is almost like the Daddy kink community he’s seen at the club. But Travis isn’t a Daddy… right? If he were, surely he’d have said so.
What happens when a lie by omission threatens to bring their budding relationship tumbling down around them? Will Travis ever be able to earn Adam's trust again?
This is the first book in a new series about not-so-perfect Daddies, adorable “boys,” and one sassy brat with an insane list of rules. Grab your fan and tissues because this series comes with both a high heat advisory and all the squishy feels you’d want from a Susan Hawke book. Possible trigger for references to domestic violence.

Excerpt
I licked my lips as I checked out my date for the umpteenth time. I had high hopes for tonight. Travis was definitely hot Daddy material. I'd been checking this cutie out for a while. He was one of the Daddies who belonged to the private club where I'd been working as a bartender for the past couple years.

If Travis looked good inside the walls of Daddy's Lap, he looked downright edible sitting across from me in this fancy restaurant. God, I was just so sick of hookups and the whole dating scene. Maybe this date would be the one.

Seriously. Was it too much to ask to just want to find the perfect Daddy that I could settle down with? Hell, maybe we'd even get a puppy. Bitches like puppies. That would be me. I’m a bitch who likes puppies.

I was zoning out, picturing different dog breeds, when I realized the waiter was not-so-patiently waiting for my drink order. I gave the snotty twink the quick elevator treatment with bored eyes. "Sorry, hon. Just bring me a glass of the house red. No, scratch that. Make it a Merlot. God only knows what might pass for the house red."

The waiter—Todd, according to the name tag—rolled his eyes. He muttered under his breath, "Like you’d know the difference." I leaned back in my seat with new respect for the guy and silently clawed the air with my fingers. Meow, baby.

Travis cleared his throat. "Scratch that, Todd. The gentleman will have a glass of iced tea. In fact, bring a glass for each of us. Thank you."

Dammit. I'd had such high hopes for this evening and Travis had already broken rule number eight.

I didn't say a word, just made a mental tally mark in the con column. Travis was only a few years older than me. He couldn't have been much older than thirty, yet he had that total Daddy vibe that checked every box for me. Age wasn't a factor in whether or not a man was a Daddy. You either had it, or you didn't. And Travis? Oh, honey… Travis had it going on.

And yet… He’d totally broken rule number eight. I recited it silently while I reached for a bread roll and began to butter it. "Daddy must respect that his boy is also an adult and will treat him as such in public or on the occasions when the boy needs his autonomy."

Yep. Travis canceling my drink order was a complete rule infraction. However, I was nothing if I was not fair. Any potential Daddies would get three strikes before they were out. That meant Travis had two more chances to wow me, or not wow me, as the case may be.

Todd showed up with two frosty glasses of iced tea, garnished with a pretty sliced lemon floating on top. I wrinkled my nose and set the glass aside as I took another look at my menu. Todd was reciting the day's specials, but I didn't have time for that shit. Please, honey. Everyone knows the day's specials are just a way to get rid of the things that are about to spoil. Yeah… no. I'd be ordering from the menu, thank you very much.

"Are you gentlemen ready to order, or should I give you a few more minutes?" Was it me or was Todd giving me a judgmental look because I was still reading the menu? That just made me want to read it all over again, starting with the first item and reading like I’d forgotten my glasses.

My mouth fell open when Travis reached over and took my menu. He closed it and handed both menus to Todd. "I'll have the surf and turf special, and the gentleman will have the salmon almondine with the wild mushroom risotto." Todd jotted down the order and took off. I was too busy gaping at Travis to say a word.

How dare? How very dare? Sure, I'd been eyeballing the dish he’d ordered for me, but how dare he? Ugh. And in doing so, he'd just broken rule number seventeen—earning himself a second tally mark in the con column. I silently recited the rule as I continued to gape at Travis. Daddy will not order his boy’s meal in public unless his boy has specifically requested he do so.

Whether or not I'd been planning to order that dish was completely beside the point. Facts were facts and rule infractions were rule infractions. There had to be order in life or anarchy would reign supreme.

Come on, Travis. Don't make that third strike. I'd really like to take you to third base when we get out of here. That's a much better third to hit, honey.

As an avid reader and big romance fan myself, I love sharing the stories of the different people who live in my imagination. My stories are filled with humor, a few tears, and the underlying message to not give up hope, even in the darkest of times, because life can change on a dime when you least expect it. This theme comes from a lifetime of lessons learned on my own hard journey through the pains of poverty, the loss of more loved ones than I'd care to count, and the struggles of living through chronic illnesses. Life can be hard, but it can also be good! Through it all I've found that love, laughter, and family can make all the difference, and that's what I try to bring to every tale I tell.
I'm a happily married mom with one snarky teenage boy, and three grown "kids of my heart." I'm more widely known for my mpreg writings as Susi Hawke; this new name is a departure from that. Whether written by Susan or Susi, the books are filled with that all-important love, laughter, and family I mentioned; the only difference is that this name has no male pregnancy. I look forward to sharing my stories with you, and to bringing more romance and laughter into this world that needs it so very badly

Divorced and demoted to the night shift, Nick has his own problems. He's got an ex-wife who needs him and a kid with one foot in juvie. The last thing Nick needs is to butt heads—or other body parts—with a tempting hipster who wears a sad smile on their blind date.

Their chemistry can’t be denied, though, in an argument or in bed. No strings sex is uncomplicated and that's what Nick and Oliver need. But getting into bed together is one thing. Staying out of each other’s hearts soon becomes so much more complicated than either one imagined.

Keeping House

I can do this. Cent unzipped the top of her coveralls and lowered her long johns to reveal the halter top beneath them. “Sorry, not sorry to disappoint you, King Dane.” She unfurled her wings and rolled her shoulders to shake them open.

“Just look at all them sigils.” Dane stomped her boots on the circle sands as she laughed, and her men laughed with her. “You look like a doodled-out scratch pad.” She removed her arm from her coat and rolled her sleeve above her bracer to show the sigils tattooed across her plaster-pale bicep. “All us Hunters got them, but ours won’t warsh off with a good scrubbin’, and neither will yours by the time you get back to Stowne.”

“Sigils remain intact even if they cannot be seen by the eye.” Cent’s spouse’s mouth thinned with the stress she knew they were feeling. “If the sigils are applied in perfect love and trust, that is. Rest assured, Centenary’s were.”

“Like I care.” Dane shoved her arm back into her coat. “It’s my turn, you worn-out gravel heap. That was our deal.” She lunged forward to grab Cent by the arm.

“Let go!” Cent wrenched away and moved to stand between Pyre and Exan, her elemental escorts. “I’ll fly with them.” She blew Stowne a kiss and stretched her wings, shivering. “Hold on.” She pulled a pair of striped leg warmers from her pocket and slid them over her arms. They were horribly outdated, but they’d been a cheap thrift shop solution, and she was glad she’d remembered them. Still, they weren’t enough for the current weather.

“Betcha she can’t keep up.” Dane’s guard, Conall, snorted and extended his hand to the guard with the dreadlocks. “Deal, Weeds?”

Weeds knocked his hand away. “Nothing to be gained there because you’re right.” He pulled a red wool chullo hat from his pocket and drew it over his head, topping that with a pair of ski goggles he lowered over his eyes. “She’s not going to get there without help.”

“Manners, boys.” Dane pulled a pair of leather Steampunk-style goggles over her eyes. “Best not judge until we see what she’s got under the hood. Come on. We’re late for a helluva shindig.” She laughed as she took to the air, hovering above the circle until Cent, Pyre, and Exan joined her. Her men took to the air behind them, Weeds pressing ahead while Conall brought up the rear.

We’re sandwiched in.Cent flew as hard as she could, hoping to lessen the distance between her and Dane, but it kept growing.

“Problem?” Conall flew up behind Cent as she struggled to keep speed. “Get movin’.”

“I’m trying!” Cent almost stopped mid-air to confront him, but Pyre grabbed her by the shoulder, pulling her to the right so he flew past.

“Not a good idea.” Pyre hooked their smoky arm through hers, urging her along. “You’re cold.” They sent warmth into her, but she still shivered.

“Let us give you the energy to do this.” A thread of Exan’s black mass wrapped her left arm. “Come along.”

“What’s the holdup?” Dane flew back to face them. “Havin’ trouble keepin’ up, girlie?” She moved closer. “Guess Conall’s right after all. You need him to carry you the rest of the way?” Dane snickered when Conall returned to hover, scowling, behind her. Their beating wings stirred the air more than Cent’s, and her teeth chattered to the point she couldn’t hide it.

“I’ll get there.” But she knew she’d be struggling even with Pyre and Exan’s help, and she was so cold their warming energy wasn’t enough.

“You can’t, admit it.” Dane surged forward to grab Cent around the waist, forcing her wings to roll then tuck as Exan and Pyre’s grips fell away. “Your spirit form can fly, but your real wings are puny. Best hold on, or I’ll let you fall.” She turned Cent outward, holding her with one stout arm as they began to move. “Your eyes ain’t used to this cold and movement combined, so keep them closed until we’re— no. Hey, Weeds.” Dane slowed until he caught up along with Pyre and Exan, who both moved to see Cent’s face.

“I’m fine.” She blinked away the frost that’d collected on her eyelashes. “Let her do the work if she wants.”

“I got stuff to get done, or you’d be suckin’ up the rear, that’s all.” Dane motioned to Weeds. “Give her your goggles.”

“But— yes ma’am.” His dismay spread across his face as he pulled a scarf from his pocket, wrapping it around his head until only his eyes showed.

I’m making a great impression on him.

“Put them on, and let’s get movin’. Much longer up here and our wings’ll start freezin’.” Dane pulled Cent’s coveralls and long johns to her chest and opened her own coat to wrap her in it. “Damn rookie-ass flyer. Next time, wear a hat too.” Dane jerked her welding cap from her pocket, pulling it over Cent’s head as they gained speed.

Air whipped around them as they moved, and it began to sleet, pelting Cent with ice shards and freezing over her goggles by the time they touched down. “Someone get her a blanket!” Dane tore the goggles from Cent’s face and blew warm, tobacco-tainted breath in her face. “And somethin’ hot to drink!” Her voice softened. “You all right, sugar?”

“Let go!” Cent broke away and rushed to Pyre and Exan’s sides before they could fully manifest. “Dane’s being nice,” she whispered as she pulled off the leg warmers then raised her long johns and coveralls. “I don’t know what to do.”

“Take a deep breath and look around.” Pyre kept their voice soft and calm, which frightened Cent all the more.

“She means you no harm this night.” Exan wrapped their arm around her shoulders. “This is Dane’s kingdom, and she is in control of all you see.” They spun her around to view the nearly three-dozen pale Hunter faces, some clearly pissed by her presence, others amused, and a few too clouded in their expression to read, clustered around the bonfire she stood near.

“Welcome back to my world, Centenary Rhodes.” Dane bowed before her then rose wearing a mischievous smile. “Let’s get this party started!”
