Meg Harding and Hockey just go together I tell ya. If you've not read her stories To Arizona and/or Hat Trick you're missing out!
He crashed into Sam’s arms as the final buzzer sounded, throwing his own around Sam’s neck and squeezing tight. He’d lost his helmet, gloves, and stick somewhere on the ice—thrown off on his race to Sam. Gold. Team Canada had done it. They’d taken home the gold medal. And he’d gotten to do it with his best friend by his side. His heart beat so fast it was going to bust free from his chest any second now. He could feel Sam shaking, the adrenaline of the win rushing through him.
All through the following handshake line, the ceremony, he kept glancing at Sam and always Sam was looking back, a grin stretching his lips and lighting his eyes. It was impossible once they were off the ice, in the raucous environment of the locker room, not to gravitate toward one another.
Half undressed, in only his briefs and a Team Canada shirt, already wet with champagne or maybe beer, Sam held an unopened bottle out to him, his smile still firmly in place. “You want?” Sam’s cheeks were flushed rosy red; his hair was wet and curling.
He swallowed heavily and nodded, dropping to his knees without thought and tilting his head back. He was still half in his pads, having only gotten his jersey and chest pads off. Closing his eyes, he opened his mouth and waited. The spray of champagne hit him in a cascade, flooding his mouth and sliding down his throat, trickling over his torso leaving cold in its wake. More of it ended up on him than in him.
When Sam stopped pouring, he opened his eyes and wiped at his drenched face, panting for breath. Sam was staring down at him, wide-eyed and glazed over, the flush on his cheeks spreading along his neck and to the tips of his ears. The bottle hit the floor, and then Sam was leaning over him, hands on either side of his face, working his fingers into his sweaty hair, tilting his head. Their lips met in a crash, slick with champagne and uncoordinated with excitement. He brought his hands up, clung to Sam’s shoulders, digging his nails in as he got with the program, tongue meeting tongue, breath being shared.
Sam tasted like victory, and he couldn’t get enough.

ReplyDeleteEven though I still can't look at Crosby since the Cup final (Sharks fan here, obvs) and so mentally replaced him in the picture, the ficlet is the perfect start to my day!
