After yet another break-up, the only bright spot for Reid is his new job as the live-in manny aboard a yacht.

Although ‘bright spot’ might not be the right term, as Reid’s terrified of water and wildly attracted to Sullivan, his still-grieving widowed employer.

Here’s the thing - Reid might not be the smartest cookie in the box. In fact, he takes the obliviousness trope of this series to new heights. And that’s entirely aside from his lack of basic survival skills.

But Reid is 100% a very compassionate cookie. A bit of a puppy in human form, really. I was all on board the Reid train from the start. He’s got heart in spades.

And he’s committed to his deal with Joanna, Sullivan’s daughter, to get her dad out of his funk - purely as platonic friends, of course.

But that doesn’t last long at all. Not with Reid’s attraction growing day by day, and Sullivan slowly caving to the warmth and sunshine he’d shut himself away from. Step by step, their friendship grows into something more.

I had some major heart eyes going throughout this book, as Reid slowly wooed Sullivan out of his cranky shell.

The UST was through the roof. And definitely worth it, once Sullivan and Reid finally give in!

The big roadblock is Sullivan’s broken heart after losing the first love of his life. I thought it was handled well, without becoming overly angsty.

My main issue though - Reid did all the heavy lifting. I would have liked Sullivan to put in effort and make a grand gesture at some before the epilogue.

That being said, the happy ever after was perfectly romantic. I loved seeing the small family and home Reid, Sullivan, and Joanna built on their yacht.

If you’re looking for an easy-to-read romance with strong themes of family and healing, and some killer UST, give ‘Cancer Ships Aquarius’ a try!

Lost in a Book - 4 Stars

Finally!!!!! I’ve been waiting since the dawn of time forever since the start of this Signs of Love Series for my sign. AQUARIUS!!! *twirls* I've enjoyed each sign and character featured throughout and this one was no different. Well, it was different in other ways; age gap, widowed MC, and a child is involved.

Reid is being dragged through difficult times after another girl dumps him. He’s looking for a place to stay and interviews to be a live-in manny for a 13 year old girl, Joanna, and her father Sullivan. To live on a yacht. Yes, please!

Sullivan is still grieving the loss of his partner and has checked out of many things he used to enjoy. Joanna’s his main source of light and when she asks for a manny, he can’t say no… even if he wishes he did.

Reid and Sullivan’s introduction starts off about as shaky as Reid’s sea legs. Which is definitely not good. Sullivan is determined to keep him at arms-length while Reid and Joanna conspire to get him to open up and become more of the man he used to be. Joanna is amazing. She’s a smart little firecracker that knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to play dirty to get it.

I really liked Reid and Sullivan together. There were more serious undertones to this read than the previous Signs of Love books but Reid’s cluelessness remains. The friendship and eventual relationship that they build is funny and sweet to read as Sullivan’s walls slowly come down. But… yes, there is a but. Sullivan is almost too bloody and standoffish while Reid is almost too clueless. I know, I know, I adore all of the clueless men from books past. Another thing that drove me crazy was Reid’s response to the issue. I just wanted to scream at him to grow a freakin’ backbone and make Sullivan work for once to make this relationship work. *stomps foot*

Alas, even though this wasn’t a favorite of mine, I still enjoyed it. I liked Reid, Sullivan, Joanna and the yacht life they have built. Recommended for fans of this series.

Thanks to some stellar eavesdropping, an unexpected angel ornament, and a bribe to open for his favorite band ever, Pax will weasel his way back into his mates’ good graces.

All he has to do is friend Clifford, the neighborhood man-shrew, for the summer. Distract him a bit so Clifford’s younger sister can sneak around.

It sounds like a piece of beginners Beethoven. Jolly good fun.

Easy.

Because, Pax totally knows how to friend people. He has heaps of friends. This shrew’s no match for his shrewd ways. Or is he?

Based on The Taming of the Shrew or as I like to say ‘10 things I hate about you’.

This was super sweet, and honestly a gay ‘10 things I hate about you’ seems like a dream from my teenage years, but did it live up to expectations? Yes and no. Pax and Chris were super funny and their friendship felt realistic. This was my favourite aspect of the book, their platonic chemistry, they clicked and it was cute to see.

My only issue was maybe the build up was a teeny tiny tad too long. I wanted some romantic feelings between these two way before they developed, but as I said the friendship was great so I'm not complaining...much.

I also didn't feel like there was any unnecessary drama, which is a relief with this type of plot and added lots of kudos points to the book. However, all in all I feel like this book was very enjoyable but also fairly forgettable. It felt more like a great friendship book and less like a romance.

Review: Pisces Hooks Taurus (Signs of Love #4) by Anyta Sunday

How absolutely bromantic.

‘Pisces Hooks Taurus’ has everything I love about this series - an adorably clueless MC, a sweet friendship, an even sweeter romance, and UST thick enough that you could cut it with a knife.

In this addition, the clueless of the pair is Zane, a struggling comic book artist from New Zealand who’s determined to fall madly in love and marry before his visa runs out.

However, much to his disappointment, he can never seem to get that fall-in-love-at-first-sight thing right.

But that doesn’t mean Zane can’t brove at first sight. Get it? Bromance and love - brove.

And that’s exactly what happens when Zane ends up crashing at Beckett’s place. Unlike Zane, Beckett’s given up on love. But Zane’s determined to prove to his new best friend that love is in fact a magical wonderful thing.

Like the previous books in this series, what I loved most about Beckett and Zane’s relationship was how they truly did become each other’s best friend. In only a few days, Zane was able to wiggle his way into Beckett’s carefully ordered life.

And Beckett recognizes quickly what a brilliant mind and way of thinking Zane has, even if he isn’t “academic” the way most of his friends are.

Zane brings colour to Beckett’s life, while Beckett gives Zane that extra push he needs to go after the things he wants.

They’re two very different men, yet they fit into each other’s lives seamlessly.

Between shared coffees and reading to each other, the two MCs become more than just friends. Of course, Beckett’s aware that what he and Zane have is definitely more than just friendship. It takes Zane considerably longer to catch on, but once he does he’s all in.

The transition from bromance to romance is a bit bumpy, but the payoff was so worth it. I’d call the ending a HEA, but with enough wiggle room to make me impatient for one of those short follow-ups Anyta Sunday writes!

I'll be honest with you. I struggled with the first part of this book. A lot. I'd read about 20 pages or so when I sincerely questioned my ability to read the rest of the book. But I toughened it out. And I don't regret a thing.

The reason why I struggled so much with the first part of the book was the writing. It felt plain and choppy, like a first attempt at writing - or maybe a rough draft. I wanted the characters and plot to be more fleshed out, so you'd get that sense of feel to the story. To get a feeling that you were there with them.

That changed in the second part where the story started to flow more naturally. The sense of place was there, you connected a bit more to the characters and everything that was going on.

That said, I did not like the twist midway through the book. Sure I can see why it was there and why that happened, but I still don't agree that was the only way things had to turn out.

Gristle made the book for me. I wished there had been a lot more of him. I think that by far he was the most interesting and complex character in the book, and I truly felt for him and the choices he had to make, the pain he was hiding. I wish we'd gotten to delve into that more.

I think that Jay was the character I liked the least. To me he came across as selfish and a bit self-absorbed. And I did not like how he kept ignoring Gristle. He knew that he was struggling and was hiding his pain. But did nothing to help him. Ignoring or forgetting friends/family for a new love is not okay.

Lethe was intriguing. To have lived his whole life and never really be seen for who he was. To live with that curse and knowing that one day it would cost him his life. You sensed that he'd given up on happiness for himself and was just waiting for the end to come.

(Un)Masked was heartbreaking and bittersweet. It had notes of despair but underneath it all there was hope and a love that might just break a century old curse.

“You want to forget that race?” I asked. Lethe nodded.

His need pressed up against mine and I wished there was something to brace ourselves against so we could stay close like this. Lethe shifted back slightly and took me in hand. I gasped as the first waves of shock somersaulted through me.

Recovering, I returned the favor, gently stroking him, absorbing the heat that coursed through my hand. I’d waited for the chance to be this close with Lethe, and it fueled my hunger for him. Closing the few inches between us, I pressed my lips against his, asking—no demanding—him to let me have my fill. The salt on his lips only added to my lust. It was him. 

This was where we bonded.

We gently stroked each other, while we waged a back-and-forth battle with our tongues neither wanted to win. My control was slipping as our breathing quickened. Waves lapping against our waists muffled the growing moans we evoked from each other.

Kissing him like no one before, I poured my soul into him, accepting his in return. This was right. He was right.

“Jay.”

My attempt to kiss over his word was met with Lethe turning his head. “Lethe?”

“I don’t want our first time—my first time—to be here.”

“I thought you have—”

He brushed his wet, salty fingers against my trembling lips. “I have, but never with someone who cared about me. You’re the first person who doesn’t see the person they most want.”

“Yes, I do.” My whisper carried over the churning water, softening his eyes even more.

“Even more reason I want to feel your body on mine without shivering from cold. Come back with me?”

I pressed my lips against his ear. “I’m going to take my time kissing every inch of you. I’m going to say your name when we come.”

(Un)Masked is the story of Jay and Lethe, two guys from Wellington, New Zealand, trying to make their blossoming love work while being haunted by a centuries old curse. A curse that forces Lethe to hide his face, often behind elaborate masks – some of which I want to share with you today.

One of the most famous masked crusaders is Zorro, avenger of the helpless in Los Angeles during the time when the city was part of Mexico. He sports a black Domino style mask that is worn by Lethe when he and Jay are racing to get Jay’s best friend, Gristle, out of a dire situation.

I shuddered, pulling out two Zorro-style masks from my pocket. One red, the other black. “Cover your face with this.” I chucked him the black one and headed for the front door. “I’ll do the same. We’ll bullshit a story about a party we decided to go to.”

As the story progresses and the curse gains more and more hold over our protagonists, Lethe is forced to cover himself even towards Jay – something that Jay finds very hard to accept, and that he wants to overcome by any means necessary. This is his ultimate goal: to unmask Lethe. Lethe would most of the time wear a simple theatre mask.

I went to go to him, but stopped when a tear trailed over his plain cream mask. “I miss you not seeing me too.” He lifted his gaze to mine, his voice soft but his words heavy. “I’m so frightened.”

“I want to see you so badly, it hurts inside.”

Being forced to hide his face, Lethe at least tries to have some fun with his masks – especially when performing his accordion tunes at the Wellington water front. His mask of choice for these times is the Venetian mask. Worn during the fancy Venetian carnival, this mask is intricate, colorful and often covered in sparkling gold and gemstones. Lethe’s favorite Venetian style mask is covered in Paua shells, the gorgeous rainbow shells found on New Zealand’s beaches.

Lethe’s music wafted in from the background and calmed me. The melody skipped and hopped, and with it the two boys grew up.

Lethe entered for the first time, wielding his accordion with skill. His face masked in paua merged him with the blue sea light. This is what Gristle would have wanted. I could feel his smiling presence.

Andy Gallo’s stories capture how he wished he’d spent his formative years, instead of how it really happened. Unfortunately for his characters, they find themselves infused with some of Andy’s less noble qualities.

A hopeless romantic, Andy writes seated next to a hundred year old Smith Brothers typewriter he inherited from his grandfather. He also dreams of superheroes and wizards and sees no reason why two men with superpowers can’t fall in love just like everyone else. Although not all of his stories have a paranormal bent, a touch of the supernatural never derailed a good read in his mind.

Married and living his happy every after, Andy helps others find their happy endings in the pages of his stories. He and his husband of more than twenty years spend their days rubbing elbows with other parents as they raise their daughter. Embracing his status as the gay dad, Andy sometimes has to remind others that one does want a hint of color even when chasing after their child.
