Jared is hired for thirty-three dollars and fifty-nine cents and it’s the first day of falling in love with Nate and his son.

Jared is a part-time student of psychology and funds his studies by working for Bryant & Waites. Youngest son of a sprawling family back in Wisconsin, New York has proven to be a lonely place even if he does love meeting new people in his job. Playing by the rules has made him Gideon’s favorite hire, but his heart is big and too often he finds himself in the weirdest of situations. Jared is strictly professional, that is until he meets Luka sitting on the office steps with pocket money in hand and the saddest expression Jared has ever seen. He never means to take the job, but his soft heart and his connection with Luka brings him into Nate’s life, and when fake turns real, things will never be the same again.

Being a single dad to eleven-year-old Luka is the best thing in Nate's world, but add in running a bar with long hours, and his work-life balance is screwed. There’s certainly no time for relationships, and even though Luka worries about his dad’s love life on a daily basis, romance is the last thing on Nate’s agenda. Owning Rhea’s Bar and keeping his head above water is second only to the love for his son—the most important person in his life. His entire world consists of his son and the bar until Jared stumbles into his life. Even though Nate won’t admit it, he’s lonely and Jared is the first friend he’s made in a very long time.

Excerpt

“Do you have any idea how worried I was? And Auntie Lee? What were you thinking? Lying? No lies, we don’t lie, ever.”
Luka’s bottom lip trembled. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to.”
Nate held Luka’s face, tugged the beanie he was wearing down over his ears. His cheeks were flushed pink from the cool air and felt chilled against Nate’s warm palms. “What would I do if something happened to you? Hey?” He pulled Luka to him, appreciated the solid feel of him in his arms. “Promise me you won’t do anything like this ever again.”
There was a small hic as Luka nodded against him.
“What were you doing that was so important that you thought you had to lie about it?” He rested his hand on the top of Luka’s head, encouraging Luka to lean back.
Luka’s eyes were wet, his nose red. “It’s your birthday soon. I wanted to get you something.”

Guest Review: School & Rock (Arizona Raptors #5) by RJ Scott & V.L. Locey

When Colorado Penn finds an unexpected package on his front step, his life will be changed forever.

Colorado Penn is living the dream. Starting goalie for the Arizona Raptors when in season, lead singer for a hard rock band when summer rolls around. He’s the quintessential free spirit who’s making sure he enjoys all the carnal blessings of his athleticism, and gritty singing voice. Now the Raptors are moving into their first playoff appearance in years, but the arrival of an unexpected package means that hockey may have to take a backseat to something way more important. Instead of the usual undergarments from adoring fans, he finds a newborn baby with a small note tucked under her carrier, naming him as the father. He refuses to give up his daughter and is determined to be the kind of father he’d dreamed of having. But to keep Madeline, he’ll need help, and he’ll need it fast. Enter handsome emergency manny, Joseph. They may be opposites, but Colorado starts to see that Joseph’s stable, calm influence makes his chaotic lifestyle choices seem less appealing. There’s something about the man that soothes not only his infant daughter but also the wild child inside Colorado.

Joseph is one year away from getting his degree in planetary science, working cover shifts at the planetarium, and pulling in income with short term manny gigs. Stars collide as he provides emergency childcare for the wild man of hockey, a man who moves so fast through life that he doesn’t know how to stop. Homeless, and caring for his niece, Emma, fate brings Joseph into Colorado and baby Madeline’s life. Madeline is a sweetheart, and Colorado is trying his hardest to make the best decision for his baby girl. He offers his home and an indecent salary, to keep Joseph in his life until summer’s end. Colorado brings mysticism and metal to Joseph’s sanctuary of science, but somehow Joseph needs to tame this shooting star and create a family. Nothing in the contract said Joseph had to fall in love to make that happen, but when it’s time for him to leave, will the void in his heart ever heal, or will it remain as cold as space itself?

Reviewer: Shee Reader

Our story opens with the adorable but clumsy Joseph losing his job. The job he loves at the museum which helps him pay his way through college and help his sister (a widow with a young child) to keep a roof over all of their heads. When will Joseph ever catch a break, or even just get a job he likes that he can do alongside school?

Then, we met Colorado. A part-time hockey goalie superstar and part-time rock superstar who is living the life you imagine a young wealthy superstar to live. Sex, drugs and rock and roll, and hockey!

Then EVERYTHING changes in a heartbeat. Colorado has a baby girl left on his doorstep with a note proclaiming him the father. Since he is about to step on to a plane with his hockey team, the timing could be better. Colorado needs to win the match, find the truth of the baby’s paternity and find himself a nanny, stat.

Of course, our little romantic hearts are beating harder at this! Joseph is looking for work and has experience of child rearing. Could this be a match made in HEA heaven?? Yes! But, of course, the road to happiness doesn’t run smoothly.

On the day Joseph turns up to Colorado’s house to interview for the job of nanny, or rather manny, he sees the drugged up and hungover rock star and fears for the child. This is exactly what Colorado wants to see - someone who puts his baby girl first!

Their attraction is simmering and Joseph is afraid of what it means, or doesn’t and then his sister suffers another terrible blow.

This story is full of twists and turns, joy and fear and the HEA is full-on adorable. I absolutely loved it. So much that I will be seeking out the first four Raptors books to read asap.

I received a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Tag Team Review: Cancer Ships Aquarius (Signs of Love #5) by Anyta Sunday

Prepare to dip your toe into the biggest adventure of your life, Cancer. There’s romance in the air, and it smells deliciously salty.

Dumped by the fifth girl in two years and abandoned by his best friends, Reid Glover is alone and in need of a home.
Desperate, he interviews to become a live-in manny aboard widowed Sullivan Bell’s yacht, the Aquarian.
The job? Not to look after thirteen-year-old Joanna. No, this child-mastermind needs Reid to befriend her dad, urge him to participate more in family life, encourage him to date, oh, and become his closest confidant and help him unleash his bottled emotions.
No pressure.
At least he’s not entirely out of his depth.
Okay, so he may have a slight aversion to the ocean. And possibly attract more than his fair share of misadventure.
But he is a pro at crying.
Watch out, Sullivan. Reid is on his way with a family-sized carton of tissues. He will help Sullivan through his fears. Will help him find love again.
Will absolutely not fall for him in the process . . .

Caution, Cancer, how long will you fool yourself?

~ ~ ~

Cancer Ships Aquarius (Signs of Love #5) is an MM opposites-attract romantic comedy featuring a misadventure prone manny and a blunt widower.
More wit, banter and bad puns - and even more heart-stopping slow burn!
Can be read as a standalone.

Adam - 3.75 Hearts

After yet another break-up, the only bright spot for Reid is his new job as the live-in manny aboard a yacht.

Although ‘bright spot’ might not be the right term, as Reid’s terrified of water and wildly attracted to Sullivan, his still-grieving widowed employer.

Here’s the thing - Reid might not be the smartest cookie in the box. In fact, he takes the obliviousness trope of this series to new heights. And that’s entirely aside from his lack of basic survival skills.

description

But Reid is 100% a very compassionate cookie. A bit of a puppy in human form, really. I was all on board the Reid train from the start. He’s got heart in spades.

And he’s committed to his deal with Joanna, Sullivan’s daughter, to get her dad out of his funk - purely as platonic friends, of course.

But that doesn’t last long at all. Not with Reid’s attraction growing day by day, and Sullivan slowly caving to the warmth and sunshine he’d shut himself away from. Step by step, their friendship grows into something more.

I had some major heart eyes going throughout this book, as Reid slowly wooed Sullivan out of his cranky shell.

description

The UST was through the roof. And definitely worth it, once Sullivan and Reid finally give in!

The big roadblock is Sullivan’s broken heart after losing the first love of his life. I thought it was handled well, without becoming overly angsty.

My main issue though - Reid did all the heavy lifting. I would have liked Sullivan to put in effort and make a grand gesture at some before the epilogue.

That being said, the happy ever after was perfectly romantic. I loved seeing the small family and home Reid, Sullivan, and Joanna built on their yacht.

If you’re looking for an easy-to-read romance with strong themes of family and healing, and some killer UST, give ‘Cancer Ships Aquarius’ a try!

Lost in a Book - 4 Stars

Finally!!!!! I’ve been waiting since the dawn of time forever since the start of this Signs of Love Series for my sign. AQUARIUS!!! *twirls* I've enjoyed each sign and character featured throughout and this one was no different. Well, it was different in other ways; age gap, widowed MC, and a child is involved.

Reid is being dragged through difficult times after another girl dumps him. He’s looking for a place to stay and interviews to be a live-in manny for a 13 year old girl, Joanna, and her father Sullivan. To live on a yacht. Yes, please!

Sullivan is still grieving the loss of his partner and has checked out of many things he used to enjoy. Joanna’s his main source of light and when she asks for a manny, he can’t say no… even if he wishes he did.

Reid and Sullivan’s introduction starts off about as shaky as Reid’s sea legs. Which is definitely not good. Sullivan is determined to keep him at arms-length while Reid and Joanna conspire to get him to open up and become more of the man he used to be. Joanna is amazing. She’s a smart little firecracker that knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to play dirty to get it.

I really liked Reid and Sullivan together. There were more serious undertones to this read than the previous Signs of Love books but Reid’s cluelessness remains. The friendship and eventual relationship that they build is funny and sweet to read as Sullivan’s walls slowly come down. But… yes, there is a but. Sullivan is almost too bloody and standoffish while Reid is almost too clueless. I know, I know, I adore all of the clueless men from books past. Another thing that drove me crazy was Reid’s response to the issue. I just wanted to scream at him to grow a freakin’ backbone and make Sullivan work for once to make this relationship work. *stomps foot*

Alas, even though this wasn’t a favorite of mine, I still enjoyed it. I liked Reid, Sullivan, Joanna and the yacht life they have built. Recommended for fans of this series.

Review: The CEO's Christmas Manny (Beyond the Boardroom #1) by Angela McCallister

Anything but business as usual.

Billionaire CEO Nic Price lives for his job. With sales down and grumbling from the board of directors—including Nic’s permanently dissatisfied father—the last thing Nic needs is distraction from the new manny, whose freewheeling approach to childcare is outlandish... and who makes Nic feel things he’s never allowed himself to feel.

Ex-teacher Sasha Lindsey is all about fun—that’s the reason people love him, so he has to be. After a bad break-up leaves him jobless and homeless, the live-in manny job with Mr. Price seems like a windfall. But his chemistry with Nic is off the charts, and he can’t afford another workplace romance disaster.

Can Nic leave his dominance in the bedroom and open his heart to the best thing that’s ever happened to him? Or will Sasha’s leap of faith backfire and ruin his chances at the family happily ever after he’s always dreamed of?

I wanted to love this, I really did. I’m a huge fan of the stoic, uptight father figure falling for the caretaker of his children who mixes fun with learning and in turn, melts the father’s heart. I mean, The Sound of Music is one of my favorite movies, ever. But Nic is no Captain Von Trapp and Sasha isn’t even close to being Maria, though he was inventive with ways to teach the kids.

This could be a case of it’s me and not the book but I just couldn’t get on board with any of what was going on. I didn’t like Nic to start out with and loathed the holy hell out of his parents. Sasha was more likeable but his career choices left me scratching my head because working in education, he had way more resources than leaving a teaching position midterm to be a manny in another state no matter what happened. When Nic and Sasha meet? It’s nothing but eye fucking and thinking about fucking and how perfect Sasha was or how perfect Nic was and I wasn’t enjoying myself at all. I couldn’t find the chemistry between these two and the only enjoyable characters for me were Nic’s nephew Ben, niece Lucy and friend/assistant Percy. I tried to read it more as a family drama and focus on that aspect but that didn’t even work for me.

I don’t know. You win some, you lose some and this wasn’t a win for me at all.

Audiobook Review: Stand by Your Manny (The Mannies #3) by Amy Lane

Learning to trust and falling in love.

Sammy Lowell has his hands full juggling his music, college, some pesky health problems, and making the uncles who raised him proud. He needs help fulfilling his after-school duties with his siblings. Nobody can be in two places at once—not even Sammy!

An injury puts Cooper Hoskins in a tough spot—if he can’t work, the foster sister he’s raising can’t eat. But years in the foster system have left Cooper short on trust, and opening up to accept help isn’t easy.

Luckily, family intervenes—Cooper needs a job so he can care for Felicity, and Sammy needs someone who can see past his illness to the wonderful things he has planned for his life. Each heals the damaged places in the other’s heart. But falling in love is a big responsibility for young men deep in family already. Can the two of them get past their fear of the immediate future to see forever with each other?

Narrator: Peter B. Brooke
Listening Length: 6 hours, 1 minutes

Reviewer: Annika

You probably know by now that the books in the Dreamspun Desires line is mostly fluff and have that harlequin feel to them. Stand by Your Manny was no exception, but hey, I love my fluff so I don't mind that at all. You know what to expect when you pick these books up.

Cooper Hoskins works in construction. He's dirt poor and turns every penny to make ends meet so that he can take care of is foster sister Felicity. An accident at work puts him out of commission and in a tight spot to care for his small family.

Sammy Lowell wants to stand on his own two feet. Wants to work with music, tour with it, at the same time he's also taking care of his siblings. It's a stressful life for sure and his health is getting worse, and he knows in his heart he's not taking care of himself as much as he should have and he can't keep going in the pace he's set for himself. He needs to accept some help.

Their love story is a sweet one. It's not a hot and heavy one. But one of exploring, of discovery, first kisses, first touches and first times. Cooper and Sammy have so much in common, the deep caring for others, nurturing. The feel things deeply. The need for family. This book is all about family, the blood kind, but mostly the one you choses. Helping and loving each other through the ups and downs. It's a pure sweet and feel good romance.

Peter B. Brooke was an okay narrator. Not a great one, but okay. His narration felt a bit stilted a lot of the time and didn't quite have that natural flow of words. Adding pauses where there shouldn't have been. Which meant I spent a lot of the time focusing on his narration instead of the story he tried to convey. It wasn't an effortless listen, I really had to focus on it and that's not something I particularly enjoy with my audiobooks. I want to be immersed into the story, be a part of it, but Brooke didn't manage that. Another issue of mine, and that is a preference of mine, was that he added no real feeling to his narration. He was just reading the words in front of him, he felt detached and it made me feel detached from the story so I was never invested one way or another.

Stand by Your Manny was at the core a cute and fluffy read/listen. I would say that you should go for the printed version rather than the audio this time around, I think you'd enjoy that more.

The Nanny I Wasn’t

By Amy Lane

Okay—I’ll admit it.

I was a sucktastic babysitter.

I wasn’t all that excited about playing run and jump games. I’d rather read kids stories and watch cartoons with them. And I never seemed to get the parents who said, “Hey, let them play in the air conditioning!” No—I got the parents who said, “They really like to be outside. Let them play for hours in the 100 degree heat. Run with them! It’ll be fun!”

I was dreamy. I forgot itineraries. I was not an authoritarian.

The little goobers walked all over me.

*sigh *

And don’t even get me started on the pastor’s kids.

Besides running me up and down the two flights of stairs in their tiny home and lying to me about what I was supposed to cook for dinner, they got me busted twice for watching Miami Vice after the kids went to bed. They weren’t supposed to know the television even worked.

And I’ll be honest. Until I was a teacher and then had kids of my own, I didn’t much like children.

So when I wrote mannies, I wrote the babysitters that I wasn’t.

Tino was organized—he knew Sammy’s schedule like the back of his hand, and he knew enough about kids to say, “Hey, that kid needs a break!”

Taylor was a keen observer. He had four kids to keep tabs on, and with the exception of losing Conroy once because his onsie matched his sheets and Taylor doesn’t have 3D vision, he had a pretty good idea of when Dusty was acting up, when Belinda was being bossy, when Melly lost her shoe, and when Conroy had a handle on all of life’s existential wonders.

Sammy played with his little brother and sister and his cousins. He wrote them songs, he taught them piano, he went to street festivals and on trips with them, and played games with them out at the pool.

And Quinlan—Quinlan was a nurturer.

By the time Dustin is old enough to pursue Quinlan, Quinlan knew his family much better than he knew himself. He knew that Belinda was bossy and he helped her get into nursing school. He knew that Melly was a little flaky, a little artistic, and was always fighting or making up or talking to her friends. He knew Conroy was a sweet-baby-honey-face and he only got upset if he was really in pain. Taylor was spoiled but kind, Saint Peter was not saintly, and Sammy’s brother and sister were also his to care for.

Quinlan knew enough about Dustin to be just a little bit nervous when Dusty announced his intentions—and he had good reason for that.

Quinlan knew that anybody that Dustin loved was going to have to be just as fierce, just as intense, and just as committed to Dustin as Dustin would be to him.

So my mannies were much better at childcaring than I was—until I had my own children, that is. But that’s okay. I grew into the role with time, experience, and empathy. My guys though, had to capture your hearts in the first chapter.

I know Quinlan captured my heart from the book before—I’m pretty hopeful he’ll grab you by the throat and make you love him before he frog-marches Dusty in front of his father for smoking in the boy’s room.

Even if it took Dustin seven more years.

Excerpt

Seven Years’ Distance

QUINLAN GREGORY’S body hurt. All of it. Every molecule.
He hauled the last suitcase out of the Lyft and paid the guy, then started carting his luggage—and his trumpet case—gingerly across the driveway, avoiding clots of dirt and tufts of grass on the concrete as he went.
Jacob had told him during his last phone call that the dog had gotten out and brutalized the new sod, but Quinlan hadn’t believed what a massacre it was until now. Anybody else would have disowned the ginger-haired mutt—aptly nicknamed Hellhound by Belinda, one of their daughters—but not Jacob and Nica Robbins-Grayson.
Quinlan’s bosses had a knack for picking up people and animals and giving them a home and then thanking them for all their help.
He should know—he’d been their manny for nearly seven years.
Their youngest, St. Peter (or, well, Peter, but Jacob and Nica insisted on calling him St. Peter in the hopes that God would be appeased and might not create a holy miracle and bless them with a seventh child) was seven this year, and Quinlan was wondering when they were going to let him go.
This job had been sort of a dream for a musician who traveled during the summer and took classes and worked night gigs in jazz bars the other nine months out of the year—but Quinlan’s last college tour had ended four days ago in a miasma of pain and dysentery, and he was twenty-seven years old.
It was high time he grew up, became an adult, stopped living in Jacob and Nica’s garage apartment, and found something responsible to do.
But first he wanted his snug little rooms, with the paneling Jacob had put in before he moved in, and the hardwood floors, and the rug Quin had bought in Vancouver, and the bed he’d put on layaway until Nica had bought it for him as a surprise when he’d come home from his summer tour the first time.
His fish tank.
The fuzzy blanket the kids had gotten him for his third Christmas with the Robbins-Graysons.
The pictures of him and the kids and the whole family at birthdays, graduations, and three weddings, including Sammy’s.
Oh, Sammy.
God. His home. It was his home, and he felt like crap on a cracker, and he needed his home.
He hauled the luggage up the stairs, both bags with his trumpet case under his arm, and was going to use the key but the knob twisted under his hand. Uh-oh—somebody must have left it open when they were feeding the fish. Maybe Dustin.
Dustin had been in his apartment. For a moment that shocked him out of his misery, even though the kids had been in and out of his apartment since the beginning, but then his stomach cramped again.
Well, no worries. The couch and television seemed unmolested, although there was a dirty dish and a coffee cup in the sink.
Quinlan set his luggage down, relieved beyond words. He worked out and ran—normally he was pretty strong, but after the stomach bug kept him hugging the toilet for four days, well, he was about done.
So ordinarily he would have noticed that the air conditioner was on, and someone was watching something in the bedroom, and every light and ceiling fan in the apartment was running.
But he was busy stripping his sweat-soaked shirt over his head, so it didn’t really hit him that somebody else was in the house until he opened the bedroom door and saw….
Oh God.
“Quin?” Dustin’s voice would hit him later—gravelly and breathy from passion.
What hit him first was the sight of the tall, muscular young man lying naked in his bed, cock in his hand, as Quinlan opened the door.
“Holy God, I’m sorry!” Quinlan shouted, slamming the door behind him. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry, Dusty. I’m sorry.”
“Jesus, Quin, what the fuck are you doing here?”
“Got sick.” Quinlan leaned against the door, weak and shaky. “Came home early. I’m sorry—I didn’t—wait.” Oh hell, he was really losing his touch. “Dustin Matthew Robbins-Grayson, were you jerking off in my bed?”
“Shut up!” Dustin shouted hotly, and Quinlan fought a flashback to those charming teenage years when the man currently naked in his room had been a Class 5 adolescent prick. “Shut up! I thought you were gone for five more days! How was I supposed to know?”
Quin’s head was swimming. “You weren’t,” he said, feeling dizzy and off balance and… oh hell, aroused. Dustin was twenty-one—not a child anymore—and the vision of him on the bed, legs spread, erect, abandoned to his own touch, was going to haunt Quin for possibly the rest of his life. “You weren’t supposed to know I was home. But what are you doing here?”
“Forget it,” Dustin muttered. “Look, just move away from the door. I’m dressed now. Pretend this didn’t happen. And—oh Jesus, if you tell my parents, I’m jumping off a bridge.”
Tell his parents? As. If.
“Dusty!” Quin cajoled, trying to inject humor into what, well, should have been a humorous situation. “Dusty, please. Man, I feel like shit, and it’s hotter than ass outside. Just… just let me shower and lie down on the bed and get some rest, and you can couch and tell me what you were doing here later, okay?”
“Quin….” Dustin’s voice held a familiar note—but one almost forgotten. Quin, you don’t get it. You’ll never understand.
And Quin found himself panicking. They’d been okay when he’d left, right? Well, they’d been changing—but they’d been okay. Dustin’s texts, his persistent, grown-up, take-me-as-I-am texts had been more than okay. They’d even had Quin dreaming… hoping… because Dustin had grown up. Right?
Oh dear God yes, he’s grown up. His chest has grown and his nipples have grown and his cock has grown….
Quinlan whimpered, because his head hurt and his heart was starting to hurt. Dustin was an adult now, and he made plenty of money working for his father at Jacob’s garage chain. He had resources. He really could flit out of Quinlan’s life like a butterfly.
“Dustin,” he begged, on about his last nerve, “please, man. Don’t rocket out of here like this. Just… just let me cool off and drink some water and we can talk. We were there, right? We were… we were doing okay, right? Don’t… don’t tell me we have to start from scratch again.”
“Would you?” Dustin asked suspiciously. “Start from scratch?”
“Well, yeah!” Quinlan said, exasperated. “Dustin, I’ve been part of your life for seven years. Do you think I want you to just take off and cut me out? Because I walked in on you… uh….” Masturbating in my bed? He made a sound then—a weak, sad one—and Dustin spoke, sounding like he’d made a decision.
“We’ll talk about what I was doing later.”
The doorknob turned, and Quinlan moved away so Dustin could open it.
For a moment they were face-to-face, Dustin with his straight brown hair parted on the side and swept over his forehead. He had hazel eyes—an odd combination of brown and gray—and a bold nose with a short jaw and strong chin. He’d been cute as a kid, but Quinlan had noticed in the past couple of years that he’d grown into a stunningly handsome man.
“You look like death, Q,” Dustin said, letting go of the defensiveness of being caught pants down, so to speak. And then… then he rocked Quinlan’s world. He reached out and grazed Quinlan’s cheek with the back of his knuckles. “I’m sorry I yelled. Go shower. I’ll get you an ice water, okay?”
Quinlan nodded weakly. “That’s sweet. Thanks—”
Dustin stopped him with—oh God—a finger across his lips. Unbidden, another moment flashed behind Quin’s eyes, of Dusty’s touch on his lips. “Not sweet,” Dustin whispered. “You know me better than anybody else in the world. You know what I’m not?”
Dustin had been rambunctious, hostile, precocious, and irritating. But according to the people who loved him best, he’d never been “sweet.”
Maybe. Quinlan had seen—in the last seven years, he’d seen the other parts of him, parts that even his parents might not have seen.
“I don’t buy the bad press,” Quin said, smiling slightly and pretending Dustin’s work-roughened finger on his chapped, tender lips wasn’t trying to light fires on a sweat-sodden peat bog. “Here—” He moved sideways and stayed leaning against the door. “I… I really have to clean up.” He’d thrown up on the plane. Twice. His muscles were already trembling from hauling his luggage up to the door.
Dustin stepped out of the room, wearing a T-shirt and cargo shorts, and looked him over critically. “All right,” he said, turning to take Quinlan’s elbow. “Let me run a bath. Let’s get you in some cool water, I’ll get you some Gatorade and some salt tablets, and let me call Mom.” He pulled Quinlan to the bathroom beyond the bedroom and sat him on the toilet before he ran the water.
Quin leaned back against the back of the commode and tried to ignore the cramping in his gut, now that the excitement was over.
“Yeah,” Dustin was saying as he ran the bath. “I, uh, actually had permission to be here—Mom and Dad thought you were going to be gone for another few days, and my apartment was getting recarpeted. I, uh—I mean, not that I didn’t like sleeping in your bed and all—”
He peeked up at Quinlan over his shoulder, looking coy and boyish—two words Quin had never associated with him. Ever. It took a moment to put together what he was actually saying.
Quinlan frowned. “You were… uh… thinking of… uh….” Oh God. No. Not now.
He slid off the seat and landed on his knees and lifted up the lid. As the cramps shook him and he heaved, he was aware of Dustin’s cool hand on his brow, of his strong arms and chest keeping Quinlan grounded.
“Jesus, Q, you’re in bad shape,” Dustin muttered. “Of all the shitty times…. Here.”
Quinlan wasn’t sure how it happened. He stopped heaving fluid, and as he was panting and recovering, Dustin, the kid he’d helped raise from puberty on, hefted him up, stripped him down, and set him in a lukewarm bath.
Not cold enough to make him shiver. Not hot enough to make him sweat.
He lay back against the tub and caught his breath, closing his eyes. “Thanks,” he mumbled.
“Don’t thank me yet,” Dustin muttered. “I’ll be right back with water and salt and some carbs—and my mom.”
“Oh Jesus. Your mom’s gonna see me naked?” Quinlan whined. He respected the holy hell out of Dustin’s mom. He sort of wanted to die just thinking about it.
“I’ll call Dad, then,” Dustin snapped. “Whatever. You look like shit, and I’m worried. And if you say I’m sweet, it’s my turn to puke.”
“But you are,” Quinlan murmured to Dustin’s retreating back. “I remember. You think I don’t remember how sweet you are?”
“Fuck off, Quin.”
But Quinlan’s eyes were closed, and he was drifting in the tepid water. Back, back, back, seven years ago, at the park wedding of Taylor Cochran and Brandon Grayson. Back to a warm, bright September day seven years ago, when the red dust of the foothills seemed to stain the very air, and Quinlan’s friend—Dustin’s cousin, Sammy Lowell—was looking happy, if not healthy, and very much in love.
And Quinlan was fighting off a terrible case of woe-is-me.

Review: A Fool and His Manny (The Mannies #4) by Amy Lane

Seeing the truth and falling in love.

Dustin Robbins-Grayson was a surly adolescent when Quinlan Gregory started the nanny gig. After a rocky start, he grew into Quinlan's friend and confidant—and a damned sexy man.

At twenty-one, Dusty sees how Quinlan sacrificed his own life and desires to care for Dusty’s family. He’s ready to claim Quinlan—he's never met a kinder, more capable, more lovable man. Or a lonelier one. Quinlan has spent his life as the stranger on the edge of the photograph, but Dusty wants Quinlan to be the center of his world. First he has to convince Quinlan he’s an adult, their love is real, and Quinlan can be more than a friend and caregiver. Can he show Quin that he deserves to be both a man and a lover, and that in Dusty’s eyes, he’s never been “just the manny?”

Back when I read Stand by Your Manny and realized that sweet Quinlan who crushed on Sammy was being paired with the oldest of the Robbins-Grayson children and the bratty, Dustin I was ready. I had the thought of “I can’t wait for the next book…Dustin and Quin??? Really? Bring it on, Amy Lane. Bring it on.” And that thought actually got a response from Amy Lane herself warning me that Dustin and Quin would break me in the sweetest ways and OMG was she every right! This book one hell of a helping of hurt/comfort and I am wiping my chin from my meal. Good lord. This was so good.

Real quick: this is listed 4th in The Mannies series and if you don’t want to be confused on who everyone is, you might wanna catch up if you haven’t already. The Lowell-Robbins-Robbins-Grayson clan is pretty damn big but it’s a fantastic read seeing how this family comes together.

I love the way this is told! We get a bit of an awkward situation as Quinlan comes home to his apartment to a Dustin in his bed living out one of Quin’s dirtiest fantasies. It just sucks that Quin is so sick, having picked up a bug while on his last summer tour and incapable of walking, let alone being productive with Dustin. This gives a chance for us to know something has happened between these two which needs to be settled and with a turn of a page, we are seven years into the past where Quinlan and Dustin meet.

Dustin is the oldest child of Nica and Jacob Robbins-Grayson. He’s always been the kid who was known for getting into trouble. He’s also the kid who gets carrot cake for his birthday though he hates it and we finally learn why in this book. But Dusty, for all his rough edges he presents has a soft side when it comes to his family and those he claims as family. In the beginning, when he first meets Quinlan, he’s coming from a place of grief having Taylor leaving as their manny to move in with Brandon and this family doesn’t like to see the ones they love go. Granted, Taylor and Brandon aren’t going far. But the kids have grown to love Taylor and this is an adjustment. So, of course, 14 year old Dustin is a brat to 20 year old Quin, who just wants to be part of a family, but doesn’t know how to get one.

Quinlan… we met him in Sammy and Cooper’s book and I adored him. I thought I would love his story but I had no idea how much or how much it would break my heart. Quin is a fantastic, but guarded young man, who never ate dinner with the family he cared for because he didn’t think he was wanted. And yet, all it took was an invite from a young Dustin who needed the support of the man who now meant more to him than any of the mannies before.

I absolutely love that Quin and Dusty have a discussion about crushes and that they bond over their shared crush of Sammy. It was just too stinking cute to not tuck away in my memory but that discussion was more than just about crushes; it gave Dustin the courage to come out to his family and it gave Dustin an insight to how Quinlan needed to be loved. It’s a damn good thing Dustin stored that insight away in his Quin files preparing to use them when he thought Quin would be ready.

These two made me smile, made me laugh, they made me ache and they made me so stupidly happy. I love every damn thing they went through because it brought them closer together and really allowed Quinlan to see how much he is loved and not just by Dustin. You see, there is a running theme with this series and it’s one of unconditional love of family. The family that Quinlan walked away from doesn’t and didn’t deserve him and it was fate that he was asked to care for “Sammy’s family” because that is where he belongs. I have to say, I would love the have been in that crowded room to hear Conroy’s speech… Nica and Jacob raised some amazing kids!

Speaking of Sammy’s family, of course they are involved in this, as Quinlan takes care of Jacob and Nica’s kids; seeing them on page more was a pure delight. Nica is fierce and protective of all her kids and my mother’s heart hurt along with hers as she wants nothing more than to take care of Quin and have him feel how much she loved him. Of course, there is comedy with this family and I wouldn’t expect anything less and it’s a full package once you are in these pages; laughs, tears, triumphs, setbacks and family pictures where no one is on the edge.

I just want to hug this book, so I can hug everyone in it. I can’t believe the angst bit with Sammy Lane put me through, but I get how it belonged in Quinlan’s story arc. I can’t believe what shitty parents Quinlan had but I love that he was on the take me or watch me go path when he came out and made himself into the amazing man he is today. I love that Dustin knew at eighteen that Quinlan was everything to him and that he waited so he wouldn’t spook the love of his life with his intense feelings. I love the freaking crazy cats, I love that the boys peed in bushes because they didn’t want to dry off and go into the house when they were young, I love Nica not judging and I love Channing and Tino going balls to the wall business when it comes to protecting Quinlan.

But what I love most of all is Quin accepting that Dustin isn’t a boy he used to take care of, but a man he’s watched grow up and one he has fallen head over heels for. Their romance was super swoony from the first kiss to selfies on the road to Quinlan not getting the question being asked. They are amazing together and this whole series give me hope and joy in a current world where the day to day can be pretty dark.

Review: Night of the Living Manny by Julia Talbot

Something besides love is growing….

Manny Brenden Torrance is good at his job. He's dealt with all sorts of children and parents, but he's never met anyone as intriguing as Liam Whitehouse. Liam is a scientist with three kids, whose job is keeping him away from home more and more. That's where Brenden steps in to help.

Liam has secrets, though. He's working on a project for a pharmaceutical lab that could change disease management. Or destroy it. While he and Brenden start a romance they both want to continue, things at Liam's job come to a head, and suddenly the whole family of Dad, manny, three kids, and a big drooly dog is on the run from the one thing that might keep Brenden and Liam apart. And infect the world.

This was not a romance situation, it was a job.
Well this was cute if you find lab created zombie-esque romances on the cute side. Seriously though, this was light and fitting for the line.

When Manny Brenden Torrance takes an urgent job just when he’s planned a month off to himself and his beast of a dog Moose, he gets more than a handful of kids to take care of. Brenden walks straight into a struggling family with a widower whose job is keeping him from quality time with his three children and three kids who really need more time with their dad. It’s a good thing Brenden and Moose have a butt load of experience when they meet the Whitehouse clan. But has all their manny training prepared them for what they really signed up for?

Told from Brenden and Liam’s POV, we get the whole story as Liam finally gives in and gets help in the form of a manny to manage his family. Liam lost his wife a few years ago and while he is keeping his head above water, the weights of his job are dragging him under and he just needs that bit of help to not drown. Susana, Peter and Brittany are good kids, but they are kids who are teetering on the verge of disaster with their dad trying to balance it all. Thankfully, they all know what’s really happening and after a grumble or three, open up to Brenden being around.

The story is told well and I liked that we got to know all of the characters before the pandemic happens and the need to survive kicks in. We don’t know what’s up with Liam’s job and the emergency until we are decently into the book, so we get on page time with everyone setting a relatable foundation. It was nice to know where everyone stood with their feelings and it wasn’t just the “OMG we might die” that made everyone fall in love and everyone okay with the new family situation.
We’ll figure this out. You’re a scientist and I’m a manny. We can do anything.
I liked Brenden and adored Moose. The story is really light even given the virus situation but Brenden was down to earth and loved his job. He falls hard for every member of the Whitehouse family and when given the opportunity to let his feelings fly for Liam, he doesn’t hold back.

Liam is a good guy who has always wanted to do the right thing. His job has its challenges and after losing his wife the stress comes down three fold but Liam is too smart not to ask for help. Liam is also too smart not to be honest with his kids or with the new manny he thinks is hot and also is developing feelings for.

All of the kids were unique and had qualities that gave the story a bit of realism while being just a tad bit of unbelievable to stay straight with a paranormal read. There is insta-love in this but with the outbreak and the possible decline of civilization on the line, I will go with it and let the men fall in love.

I guess for me, this felt reminiscent of another story I read of lab created “zombies” where things weren’t as light and I will admit, the lightness of the Dreamspun series didn’t lend itself to this story as well as some others.
But that’s just my opinion, your mileage may vary.

Review: Stand by Your Manny (The Mannies #3) by Amy Lane

I am so in love with The Mannies series and knew reading about Sammy finding love would be amazing and I was right. Cooper is the perfect fit for him and he and his sister Felicity are a match for the Lowell-Grayson clan.

This book was really emotional for me, yeah I know that’s nothing new, but with Sammy and his aplastic anemia and how much Cooper took care of him, made me think of my son and his newly diagnosed Type 1 Diabetes. It’s not a bother to care for those you love, regardless of the type of love, and seeing Sammy struggle with trying to be all adult and take care of himself made my heart ache as a mom. But thankfully Sammy has his uncles who would move the world for him and the love of Cooper to make sure he is healthy and doing everything he can to stay that way.

So…

I adored this book but that should be a given because I love the Lowell-Grayson-Robbins clan with their mass amount of children and the needed flow chart for them all but I get a kick out of reading every story in this series.
I am going to keep this review short so I don’t ramble on and on.

Cooper is a boy who has always felt unwanted from his mother abandoning him to the numerous foster families that just didn’t care. When his last foster sister runs away twice to be with him, he takes her in even though it’s not quite legal and Felicity becomes everything to Cooper. But when Cooper takes a fall off the roof and needs taking care of himself, his boss Brandon and Brandon’s hot boyfriend Taylor introduce him to the one family that always has room for one more to love.

Sammy, we met in the first book as Channing’s nephew who opened the door on a Wednesday night hoping everything would start over when the Dinner Box girl came and instead, he opened the door to Tino who would become his new Uncle and the love of Channing’s life. Sammy has known struggle and privilege through his uncles but never let himself be ungrateful for it. When Brandon suggests Cooper be the new manny for Sammy’s younger siblings as a way for him to recoup from his injuries and give Felicity a stable home, the pieces all fall into place and young love finds its way.

This was so stinking sweet and I liked getting to know Cooper and Sammy as they fell in love. Both young men are inexperienced in everything beyond kissing and really take their time with one another and each intimate moment is so special. I got a kick out of Tino being himself with all his wisdom and how he had to calm Channing down. It was such a pleasure to see more of them as well as Brandon and Taylor who get a special bit at the end.

This series is all about family and how it chooses you, you aren’t born into it. Cooper learns to love those who care about him and trust they won’t disappear and Sammy learns he can love and depend on someone who doesn’t consider him a bother.

These two were just adorable as heck and I can’t wait for the next book…Dustin and Quin??? Really? Bring it on, Amy Lane. Bring it on.

Review: Just for Nice (States of Love) by H.M. Shepherd

Nick Caratelli flees the city in an attempt to escape a broken relationship and a career he never wanted. He plans to set up a bed-and-breakfast in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country—despite the fact he has no experience in renovating the old building. Luckily his handsome neighbor Sam approaches him with a curious proposal: he’ll help with the restoration in exchange for Nick babysitting his niece.

As they work to have the bed-and-breakfast open for business by summer’s end, their lives become interwoven without them even trying. Before he knows it, Nick is recovering from his loss and taking his place in the unconventional family that seems determined to form. But for Nick and Sam to be together in all the ways they desire, they’ll have to realize all the arguments against romance exist only in their heads….

Not too bad for a debut novel...

As per the blurb, Nick is getting over a bad break up and has decided to quit law and open up a bed and breakfast. He realizes too late that he’s a bit in over his head and really doesn’t have the knowledge to do what needs to be done. Perhaps fortuitously, Nick’s neighbor Sam, is in need of a babysitter for his niece and offers his handyman services in exchange. Attraction and feelings inevitably develop because of course they will!

I’m going to assume that the States of Love series has a word limit on how long a story can be and that the author was perhaps stymied by this. I wanted things more fleshed out. I wanted everything from Nick’s sexuality, to Sam’s past, and even the niece’s age, to be revealed with better timing and explanation than what I got. I felt like I was in the dark for three quarters of this book and just when things were finally coming together, a few months pass by in a flash, and we’re told the ending, rather than shown. To be honest, approximately 100 pages is just not enough to properly do a story justice most of the time, and though I absolutely adored the premise, this fell short for me.

Again, I liked what I got. Points go towards the very likeable MC’s and the hot sweetness when Nick and Sam acted on their attraction. I’m just really greedy, and I wanted more.

Thank you to the author/publisher for a copy in exchange for an honest review.
