Review: The Scouts (The Order #3) by Kasia Bacon

Soldiers. Lovers. Soulmates.

Lochan and Ervyn—an assassin and a sharpshooter—remain in service to the Queen as part of an elite reconnaissance unit.
The Scouts are ghostlike. Elusive. Deadly.
They strike at enemies of the Crown without mercy. They get the job done, leaving no loose ends or witnesses. When Magic Supremacists threaten the safety of Elven Country, they do their duty—whatever it takes.
Lochan and Ervyn belong to each other, but will serving together as comrades-in-arms strengthen their bond as lovers or tear them apart?

The Scouts is the third book in the Order Series. In this volume, Ervyn loses control, Lochan stops fighting his feelings and Verhan… well, remains Verhan.

Recommended reading order: The Mutt, The Highlander, Twenty-One Arrow Salute, The Scouts.

TAGS:
Military, Soulmates, Hurt/Comfort, Humour, Snark, Banter, Moody vs. Possessive, Mine-Mine-Mine, We-Belong-Together, Magic, Adventure & Fantasy Romance.

It’s no secret that I adore Ms. Bacon’s world of The Order, and this long awaited sequel to Ervyn and Lochan did not fail me. If you’re new to this universe, my recommendation is to read in publishing order starting with The Mutt.

In case you didn’t know, Ervyn and Lochan are soldiers in the Scouts, the best of the best of the Queen’s elite defense, doing the impossible missions that only a very select few can accomplish. This time around, they’re trying to stop magic supremacists from causing havoc on the kingdom, and they are in desperate need of intel. The thing is, in order to get said intel, it will put their relationship to the test.

I admit at first that I was a bit disgruntled to find out that this starts technically 2.5 years after The Highlander, because I really wanted to see all the details of Ervyn and Lochan’s burgeoning relationship. Though they are definitely committed now, both still harbor that deep buried fear that maybe, just maybe, they’re not good enough to keep the other. So, when this important mission throws a potential wrench in their dynamic, it puts them in a tailspin of insecurity, doubt, and jealousy. What it also does is allow the reader to bask in some delicious emotions, as well as some very intimate scenes between these two strong, capable, and lethal men, who only show vulnerability (rarely and sparingly) to the other. Unf! I love when that happens!

Instead of whetting my appetite, Ms. Bacon has only served to make me hungrier, and it will be a very long, torturous, pining wait for the next installment because though she leaves things not necessarily on a cliffhanger, there’s just enough of a hint of more challenges ahead for Ervyn and Lochan. For now, be reassured that this had plenty of action and suspense, swoony feels, romantic smexy, and a deeper peek into their touching, intense relationship, ending with these two solidly confident in each other’s love. I have no doubt we’ll be put through an emotional ringer in the future for other reasons, but the payoff will be well worth it, the tease here, always making you want more. So much more.

Brava Ms. Bacon! Thank you so much for this, and I’m just putting it out there that I’m still eagerly waiting for all your other stories that need to come out, in the event you were wondering and weren’t sure of my wants and needs and desires. *wink*

Dominic “Bull” Walker is used to the simpler things in life. Give him his own land to work, a strong horse, and twelve hours of daylight, and he is a contented man. But when someone threatens to take away the successful ranch that took him two years to rebuild, he’ll accept any help he can get to defend it.

Mandel “Fox” Tucker is a sixth-generation SWAT soldier. It’s embedded in his bones to protect and serve his community. So when he gets word of the vandalism occurring on the Walker Ranch, he quickly volunteers the free time he has, thanks to his recent suspension.

The brief visit Fox had with Bull four months ago had been a contentious—but powerful—encounter. Therefore, he’s not surprised when he shows up on his doorstep unannounced and has to pull out some of his best tricks to get past the six-foot-four, stubborn Texan.

Fox is only there to safeguard what’s most important to Bull. But being on the ranch brings an awareness to him that he embraces with both hands. Nature, peace… love—things he never found in the city.

Excerpt

Bull set his lunch tote to the side and spread his legs where he was sitting on top of the table. Fox recognized the invitation and went eagerly like a dog wanting affection from his master. Bull always got this look in his eye, and he got handsy anytime Fox did some work on the farm. He draped his arms over Bull’s shoulders and went for another taste of those soft lips, but his forehead kept hitting the brim of Bull’s hat. He removed it and dropped it onto the table, then went in on his now unobstructed path. And the kiss would’ve been nice if he wasn’t almost knocked over when Bull leapt to his feet as if he’d been struck in the back.

“Shit, fuck,”Bull cursed, yanking his hat up and aggressively brushing at the nothing on it.

Fox stood there dumbfounded for a second before he blurted, “Are you on crack? I’ve worked in narcotics for years, and your behavior right now is a dead giveaway.”

Bull slammed his hat back on his head, his eyes narrowed on him. “I’m not the crazy one here. You don’t ever throw a cowboy’s hat on the table. Are you trying to get me run over by a tractor?”

“A superstition.”Fox scoffed. “Is this supposed to be common knowledge?”

A sharp tug of Fox’s hip brought them pelvis to pelvis, and the way Bull was scowling down on him had his blood pumping faster, flooding lower. “Don’t put my hat on the damn table,”Bull growled.

Fox grinned, liking this game. “Or else…”

Bull tilted his head. The intensity in his eyes and the snarl of his lips had Fox preparing to be kissed until his lips were sore, but of course, Dale showed up at just the wrong damn time.

“Lunchtime is over, sweethearts,”he said, dismounting Brandy.

Fox inched away, wishing he had his stun gun. “You’re like a fucking cold sore, Dale. You just keep popping up at the worst possible times.”

19 April 2010

Chicago, Illinois

Even after three years, living in a big city still creeped Jaret Bachmann out. He hated his fear of dark corners and alleys, not to mention his concern about getting beat up as a gay guy. Straight guys, no matter how peaceful they looked, worried him. In broad daylight, he felt more secure as long as he watched where he went, kept his head up, and stayed in populated areas. And he loved living in the Rogers Park neighborhood. Being in a metropolitan area was so much better for him than small town Colorado. Still, he only had a little light available before the sun went down tonight.

He giggled at himself to release some tension. His mind went to some weird place about the sun setting, like a vampire might jump out and attack him. As if.

Heading out to meet his best friend, Brady, Jaret relaxed once he got to the path along Lake Michigan. He passed several joggers, almost got hit by a bike, and meandered his way south. He contemplated taking the “L” but had plenty of time to walk. The spring weather warmed up Chicago, still a comfortable seventy degrees, even as the sun slowly descended in the west. The weather was perfect. Besides, he could always use the exercise.

Jaret felt safer and got his iPod out to search for music. He loved Lady Gaga; why not a little monster love? Or Train’s latest CD rocked. Still, he paused at “Relax” and grinned. That song totally kicked ass. Totally. And, he hadn’t listened to much of his favorite singer’s first album in a long time. If he loved Lady Gaga, then words couldn’t describe his adoration for Mika.

He popped in his earbuds and picked up his pace. He even danced a little, despite being in public and seeing the few passersby glancing his way as if he’d gone insane.

The path grew darker with the setting sun and the trees lining both sides of the trail. This dance mix steeled Jaret’s nerves. He wiggled his butt, jumped to the side, and smiled at a little old lady and her dog as they walked by.

A few yards later, he was alone. He fretted a little but cranked the music to ignore the world around him. To comfort himself, he reached into his pocket and rubbed the ruby necklace he always brought along for protection. All the Bachmann heirloom jewels empowered his witchcraft and kept him safe, and he loved the beautiful rubies most of all. In a pinch, he could always use his magic to ward anyone off. He’d never had to use his ability to defend himself, except from ghosts, but knew he could if needed. Being a witch had its advantages.

Jaret almost missed the group of four guys sitting off to the side, watching the lake or something. He slowed when he glimpsed a bright-red shirt and thought of his boyfriend, Steve. He’d seen Steve earlier in the day, wearing this totally hot red T-shirt that clung to his chest and showed off his gorgeous biceps. He couldn’t remember the shirt exactly, though he thought it had a University of Nebraska logo on the front.

Jaret lurched to a stop when he bumped into someone. “Uh, oh. Sorry. I didn’t see you.” He glanced up to see another guy with a pretty big belly, yet tons of muscle, not to mention a wicked scowl.

The guy yanked out Jaret’s earbuds and glared down at him. “Fuckin’ fairy. Watch where you’re walkin’.”

“Sorry,” Jaret barely whispered and started shaking. He’d heard about gay bashings but had never experienced one. In fact, he had never been in a fight. He could see this dude meant him harm by the way he loomed over him.

Jaret reached into his pocket for the necklace. His shaking hands got the better of him, and his finger got stuck in the little coin pocket instead.

Growing more afraid, Jaret stepped to the side to continue until the guy moved with him and blocked his way. Jaret stared at the familiar logo of Northwestern football on the purple T-shirt. He often saw the very shirt on Steve. This guy was enormous. Not good.

His heart racing, Jaret scanned for anyone nearby watching. He spotted the group of four guys out of the corner of his eye. Any chance for help evaporated when two of them moved closer, and he saw they, too, wore Northwestern football gear.

One of them grinned and clapped. “Caught yourself a little fag, Mikey? What you gonna do with him?”

Mikey laughed and crossed his bazooka-sized forearms over his chest. Then he reached down and petted Jaret on the head like a dog. Jaret had little time to act to protect himself. There was no time to get the necklace out. He shot to the side to move around the asshole, but the guy put out his leg and tripped Jaret. He sprawled onto the path, skinning his elbow.

Jaret’s heart pounded as fear almost overwhelmed him.

Opposites attract when Keir is once jilted, twice shy...

Keir Brodie is a lawyer with good reason for his trust issues. A year after his groom didn’t show up at their wedding, he’s still heartsore and hurting. Work has been his saviour, but a new project sets alarm bells ringing — his favourite client wants to buy a house for someone Keir thinks is a liar.

Mitch’s nice-guy act doesn’t fool Keir, and he can’t let sparks flying when they’re together distract him. That’s just the flare of opposites attracting, not the lifelong connection he misses. Besides, no amount of passion is worth risking his heart, especially with someone only down for onetime hook-ups.

Their shared project chips away at Keir’s first impressions. As the truth, and Keir, unravel, Mitch pieces him back together in ways Keir couldn’t have predicted. Trusting Mitch with more than his client’s money will take a leap of faith, in himself, and in a man Keir hopes won’t leave him waiting.

Featuring opposites who attract, and passion in close proximity, His Haven is the third shared-world novel in the His Contemporary MM Romance series. Featuring a different couple each time, these books can be read alone, or enjoyed together.

Would law school do what a drug lord’s bullet could not - hand Colin Campbell the bitter defeat he never believed he’d have to face? Or would the man he loved find a way to draw him back from the abyss?

Blurb

Colin Campbell had been a champion all his life. Nothing had ever beaten him, not even a drug lord’s bullet. He approached law school the same way he approached everything in life, with cocky confidence fizzing through his veins like ginger ale. He had it all. He had the looks, the brains, the experience, the know-how and he also had the love of his life at his side. He couldn’t be defeated... he thought.

But he hadn’t counted on the gravitas of law school, the reading, the preparation, the cases, the competition, the Socratic Method, the concepts, the grading curve, the expectations, the finals, memos, study groups, outlines... all of it piled and heaped upon those preparing for a career as an attorney until it wasn’t surprising that some of them simply imploded under the weight of it all.

Suddenly Colin was spinning out of control, scrambling to keep up, rarely ever seeing Joshua. His grades slumped as he tried desperately to balance the opposing forces in his life, but his only solution was stretching himself thinner and thinner, until he feared he’d be torn in two. Joshua pleaded with him to slow down, but Colin refused to lighten his load and the path before them grew darker and darker.

They’d been through so much and survived. Would law school do what a drug lord’s bullet could not - hand Colin Campbell the bitter defeat he never believed he’d have to face?

Or would the man he loved find a way to draw him back from the abyss?

About the Author

My name is Janice Jarrell. I am a retired grandmother who lives in Seattle, WA.  I have two children and three grandsons. I’ve been writing gay romance since I was twelve years old, only back then it wasn’t called ‘gay romance’. In fact, it had no name at all. It was the fifty’s, and it was worth your life to admit to being gay, let alone confess to being a girl who constantly fantasized about relationships between gay men. Hell, I didn’t even know what a homosexual was. I lived on a farm out in the sticks in a tiny Michigan village and I’d never, to my knowledge, even heard the word. I just knew I loved the thought of boy on boy romance. I just knew that there was something hot going on between Tom Corbett and his Space Cadets and all those guys on ‘Combat’.

I wrote slash fanfiction for 30 years, writing over 337 stories, some as short as 100 words (a drabble) some as long as a series which was over 119,012 words. I enjoy writing my stories. I enjoyed the feedback I received from my readers. It was a creative release I’d been searching for my entire life and I blessed the Internet for leading me to this artistic oasis for my spirit.

Love’s Magic was my very first step into writing my own characters. I will always be grateful the slash fanfiction community for nurturing the budding author until she was ready to blossom into a fully realized novelist. It’s been an amazing thing to watch the gay community’s growth over these past twenty years. My own journey has echoed theirs in many ways, and I’m grateful to all those gay activists who fought to give the gay community the rights and privileges they always deserved.

My second contemporary gay romance novel, Love's Trials followed Colin and Joshua on their journey as men and as a couple. The readers who fell in love with them in Love’s Magic were thrilled to see their romance continue to grow and blossom, but were forced to watch our beloved boys go through some pretty traumatic trials in this book, trials which nearly shattered their relationship. But their love proved stronger than any troubles in the end and they now move forward into the happiness they know they deserve.

In Love’s Glory, Colin and Joshua bask in the happiness that eluded them in Love’s Trials. If you’re looking for a book filled with anger, fear, and anxiety... look elsewhere. Love’s Glory is about just that... the glory of love and the continued growth of these two extraordinary men and the amazing friends who are a large part of their lives.

I’m also grateful to the gay romance community, readers, authors, publishers and promoters, who are making these, my retirement years, the most creative ones of my life. When I'm not writing, I'm traveling, walking, hiking, knitting, crocheting, and weaving, and enjoying my life here in the heart of the Pacific Northwest.

The question of death returned to me as I reflected on recent events. You die and your body no longer functions. I was wrong. You die and your soul leaves, and what’s left turns to dust. That wasn’t the case.

Everything I thought was no longer my reality.

I sat with a glass of brandy between my hands, focusing on the fire in Juliet’s office. The oranges, reds, and yellows of the flames danced around the logs, releasing a warmth that barely penetrated my worried exterior. The crackling of the fire tickled my ears as the scent of burning pine lingered in and out of my consciousness. A knot tugged the back of my neck. What was this new vision? Worse yet, what did it have to do with me? Not to mention Juliet, Kirtus, Gregor, and the other Immortals.

“Chris.” Juliet’s gentle voice pulled me from my fog of apprehension.

How long had I been like this? A minute? A day? A year? I wasn’t sure. I turned from the fire. Kirtus sat next to me on the sofa, his coat removed, replaced by an air of worry. His red hair, green and gray eyes typically so intoxicating, brought me no joy. Gregor’s tall solid frame blocked one of Juliet’s bookcases, his rugged face a shadow of concern. All of Juliet’s tomes and books, several of them personal journals of her long life, sat there taunting me. Would they be able to unravel this new vision? This new mystery? They were next to no help with the witches, or my father. The monster. I sipped my brandy, hoping it would take the chill from my soul.

I caught Juliet out of the corner of my eye waiting for me to speak. She was patient as always. She sat with her ivory pant-clad leg crossed and a glass of red in her hand, but deep in her stunning eyes there was unease. Despite her apprehension in moments like this, she appeared so young. Nevertheless, behind that faรงade of youth was the power of an Immortal who had been around for 1650 years. No one should ever underestimate her.

My eyes narrowed on the red, and my stomach flipped, not from hunger or desire but from this new burden I was meant to carry.

“Would you like a glass?” she offered. Her dark blonde hair, normally combed out, was in a ponytail, making her appear all the younger. I caught a whiff of vanilla and roses, her signature scent. I inhaled deeper, hoping it would soothe me.

I shook my head.

“I realize it’s difficult, but please can you tell us the vision again.” Juliet’s voice was a whisper, but the request rang in my head. How many times would I have to retell this story?

I put the half-full brandy glass on the coffee table, recalling the images to me. “I’m standing in some kind of chamber, but it’s not anyplace I’ve been.” I scanned their three faces. “It’s not here.” My heart pounded louder in my chest. I focused on my breathing a bit more before I continued. “In the center, there is what appears to be a formal table of polished stone with nine ornately carved chairs around it. On the wall…” I kept my eyes closed and focused on the wall. “There’s a mural. You’re in it, Juliet; so is Sybil, Garrett, Fernando, Rahim, all the members of the Council of Light.”

“The council chamber in Egypt.” Juliet tapped her finger on the edge of her glass, the noise echoing throughout her office.

The sentence was barely spoken before all the images of my vision flashed back. It was too much, and my eyes flew open. Juliet, Gregor, and Kirtus surveyed me. Considering their strained expressions, they are worried about me. I waved off their unease and shook my head.

“What else?” Gregor’s deep voice cool and calm, but the glance he shared with Juliet betrayed his composure. He didn’t understand what to do with this information any more than I did.

I pulled the vision to my thoughts and continued, “The wall with the mural began to crack and crumble and I smell smoke. The chamber is on fire…” I focused on Juliet. “The stone table crumbles. The chairs burn and everything is in shambles.”

Juliet nodded and sipped her red.

“Something or someone destroyed it, but I didn’t see them.”

“Who could do such a thing?” Kirtus rubbed his hands together. “Only the Council of Light knows the actual location.”

“What else do you see?” Juliet’s peaceful aura melted my worry and fear. After a moment my thoughts cleared. Normally I would be upset at her for using her gift on me, but I needed it. Especially after all that had happened these last few weeks. My mother’s sacrifice to save me and kill my father still haunted me. My father’s death came after we discovered he was in charge of a coven of witches who wanted to destroy the world. It was a battle we had to fight to stop the witches from releasing true magic into our world.

We failed at that. True magic had still seeped into our world before we cut it off.

I had hoped it was all behind us. I wanted things to return to normal, but my gift of being a Seer had other plans. I focused once more on the brandy, wanting a sip but not taking it; my gaze returned to the fire. More of the vision came forward. “As the room fell to ruin and the mural burned, a large carved wooden chair with inlays of gold and decorated with jewels pushed the debris away.” I closed my eyes again. “There was a shadow figure sitting in the chair.”

“Who is it?” Kirtus asked.

“I’m not sure, but I hear his voice.” I pushed my eyes together tighter to help me hear.

“I’ve stayed out of the way of history, but it’s time to return and bring what is right and just back to this world.” I took a breath. “That’s what he said, but I don’t sense malice from him, but I don’t know. Sorrow and pain, maybe. Sacrifice?”

“What does he look like?” Juliet called me to focus.

“He’s tall and he’s wearing some kind of toga with deep crimson and white stripes. I can’t really see anything else.” My eyes fluttered open.

Everyone was silent. The crackle of the fire might as well have been the rumble of a train going through the room. It was unbearable, and I was about to speak.

Kirtus beat me to it. “Why don’t we take a break?”

I shook my head. “It’s fine. After the man vanished, I was standing on a grass-covered pasture. In front of me was a hill with a young girl sitting there laughing and clapping her hands. She had long brown hair and her gaze planted on an oversized full moon. It was impossibly big.” I sighed. “I’m sorry but that’s all.” I slouched deeper in the couch, focusing my own gaze on the ceiling and the rich wood inlays and trim. “I have no idea what any of it means.” The square patterns offered my brain a relaxing, ordered shape.

“That’s okay.” Gregor’s voice was stronger now as if he realized what needed to be done.

Maybe he did. I couldn’t be sure.

“You’ve given us a lot of information to go through. Add that to the reports of magic both Victor and I have seen. There is a lot happening we still have to address,” Gregor continued. “Once we begin to break it down, perhaps more will come to you.”

I faced him. “Maybe. I hope so, because right now, it feels like a whole lot of nothing. Especially when you are already dealing with these other problems.”

“We’re all new to this Seer business.” Kirtus’s hand rested on my leg.

His touch caused a shiver to rush through my body, and right now, all I wanted to do was take him to me, hold him, and get lost in his arms and warm body.

“Plus, it’s not like you haven’t been through a whole lot of hell over the last few weeks.” Kirtus offered me a grin, the single dimple on his left cheek popping out. It melted away more of my worry.

“Is it possible it’s another witch?” Kirtus asked. “Especially if magic is involved.”

He must have already known about the reports of magic being seen both in San Jose and up in San Francisco. Either way he didn’t seem surprised by this news. Or, he could have an amazing poker face.

I turned toward Juliet, who had left the chair she was sitting in and walked over to her office windows to look out. Her ivory pants and jade-green shirt somehow still looked as crisp as the moment she had glided into my bedroom only a few hours ago.

“I doubt it’s a witch, especially given the comment about staying out of histories way and setting things right.” Juliet’s voice was tight. “The clothing Chris describes is a Roman Senator, I think.” She turned to me and the others. “Another Immortal, maybe, one from the fall of Rome.”

“That doesn’t narrow the list down.” Gregor pulled at his goatee. “Especially if we include the Dark.” His frown stretched farther across his face. “Perhaps we need to talk to Victor.”

“I can ask him,” Kirtus offered. “He mentioned he wanted to see me this week.” He tried not to grimace.

Was it about the lieutenant position and the posting as his representative to the Council of Light? What he mentioned to me earlier tonight? Was that what he wanted to speak to him about?

“Thank you.” Gregor offered a slight bow of his head. “Juliet, is there anyone you know who can help with this?” He walked over to the golden cart with the bottles of alcohol and red on it. He poured himself a glass of red. “What about the witches you know here? What about the local coven? You have a good relationship with them. What about the one who charmed this estate?”

Juliet’s lips pulled into a small frown. She crossed over to the cart and poured herself another glass of red.

“I could have gotten you that.” Gregor’s tone was gentle.

She waved him off before she sipped her drink. “He’s a Healer, not a witch, and I’m not sure if he will assist us; we have an unfortunate history.” She held her drink in one hand and pulled a book from the shelf. She turned to her desk and walked to her seat, a quiet, far-off look about her.

I peeked over at Kirtus. “We should go.” I stood and glanced over to Juliet. “You have a lot on your plate with the reports of magic. I’m sorry I’ve added to the burden, but with this new vision I figured you needed to know.”

“Chris, if you see anything else…” She trailed off.

“Of course.”

“Thank you, Chris.” Gregor extended his hand. “This new vision and perhaps the magic we’ve seen may be related.”

“I hope not.” The pull of Kirtus’s body helped me realize he was by my side. “I’ll see if I can track down anyone on my end.” He glanced over to Juliet. “My network isn’t nearly as broad as yours, but you never know.”

“I think we’ll need all the help we can get,” Gregor affirmed.

I spared a worried glance at Juliet. Something was bothering her, and it wasn’t just my vision or the reports of magic. I didn’t recognize what it was, but I understood my creator well enough to leave her be. She would tell me once she had processed her thoughts and all my vision information.

She met my gaze. “Yes, we’ll speak more. Thank you for understanding.”

“Of course.” I took Kirtus’s hand, and we walked out of her office for the second time tonight.

Blurb: The hard thing about Night Shift is when you realize werewolves are bad news, but people can be worse.

After Night Shift officer Kit Marlow solved the murder of child star Haley Jenkins, he figured he was due a little down time. Maybe even a dinner date with Cade Deacon, the sarcastic security consultant, very good kisser, and werewolf who'd helped with the investigation.

That was before someone in a Night Shift uniform drove them both off the road. With the full moon up the only dinner date Cade is interested in...has Marlow served up on a plate. And not in a sexy way.

It's the second time that corrupt Night Shift officers have tried to kill Marlow. If he has his way, it will be the last. Problem is he only has twenty-eight days before the next full moon. If he hasn't identified who wants him dead by then, he'll have to take to werewolf filled streets with a team at his back he can't trust.

First things first, though. Get through the next twelve hours alive and uneaten, and hope that if a second date is still on the cards it's less eventful.

Tour:

First of all, thank you so much for having me! I’m thrilled to be here with my new release, Split Shift by TA Moore, the second novella in the Night Shift series.

For the blog tour I’ve written a short story set in the Night Shift world. I hope you enjoy!

Chapter 5

Blood and bits of hair and skin greased the crack in the side of the bus. It hadn’t been quite big enough for whoever had been dragged out. Marlow was careful where he put his hands--as much as he could be--and tried not to think about it.

He reached up, grabbed the cold metal strut of one of the seats, and dragged himself up. A strip of metal gave under his foot and he slipped briefly, a stab of pain in the back of his calf as something dug in, but he steadied himself and made it up onto the sticky, smelly floor of the bus.

A kid instantly launched herself at him. Skinny little arms wrapped his neck and she hiccupped sobs into his shoulder. She was kind of damp and smelled of...panic. Marlow tried to peel her off, failed, and steadied her with one hand instead as he got to his knees.

“Night Shift are here now!” a little boy said, puffed up with authority and fear. “We’ll be a-ok! Sir, yes, sir!”

Mutters of ‘Night Shift’ eddied through the bus and the kids shuffled closer to him. Some of them sniffled and asked for their moms or dads, others patted him like he was a good luck charm. They were all sticky. It seemed petty to notice that under the circumstances, but they were.

There was no teacher.

Bennett squirmed into the bus with much less fanfare, which explained why she’d let Marlow go first.

“Where--?”

Marlow shook his head and indicated the cluster of kids with a quick flick of his head.

“OK,” he said. His voice sounded muted and small under the gunfire and howls from outside. He took a deep breath and tried again, louder. “Everyone, take a seat. Come on. I want everyone’s butt on a seat by the time I count to three. Can you all do that? One. Two.”

The kids shuffled in place uncertainly. A few started for one of the benches and then stopped when no one else followed them.

“It’s not a field trip,” Bennett hissed at him. “Jesus Christ.”

“Everyone,” Marlow insisted. “Two and a half. And threeeeee.”

The kids finally co-operated, hunched in little clots of bodies on benches meant for two kids.

Except for one little girl. She had blood in her blonde curls and a long gash on her face that might even scar if she lived long enough. Not badly though. Her eyes were huge and glazed with shock.

“Mrs Notting hurt herself,” she said. For some reason saying it broke the dam and her face screwed up as tears spilled down her face. “Really bad.”

Bennett grimaced at Marlow and then turned to point at the kids. They stared at her finger as it tracked along the rows. “You lot? Stay. Put. Got it?”

They all nodded earnestly.

“Hey, kid,” Marlow put his hand on the little girl’s shoulder and squeezed gently. “What’s your name?”

The little girl wiped her nose on her sleeve. “Elliot.”

“OK. Elliot, why don’t you take us to your Mrs Nottingly? Let’s see if we can help her?”

Elliot squinched her face up, dripping fresh blood from the cut on her cheek, and shook her head. “I don’t want to,” she said. “Mr Redknapp is up there.”

“Where?” Bennett asked. “Front or back?”

Elliot pointed toward the front of the bus.

“OK,” Marlow said. He pulled a pad of gauze out of his pocket, pressed it against her cheek, and lifted her hand to hold it in place. “Hold that there and go sit down while we got check on them. OK?”

She stumbled away. Marlow pulled his gun and held it low against his leg as he followed Bennett down the bus. It jolted and rattled underfoot as wolves got through the Night Shift barricade to crash into it.

Bennett caught her balance on a kid’s head, apologised, and Marlow slid past her into the cab.

It turned out Mr Redknapp didn’t need any help. He sprawled, head down, on the steps toward the claw-scored door. There was a hole in his back big enough to stick a fist into and from the thick, clotted puddle of blood under him the one in his chest was even bigger.

“I...I had to,” Mrs Notting said. She was a stocky, middle-aged woman with severely cut hair and watery blue eyes. She had on a peach t-shirt with ‘Greetings from Florida’ on it and both legs torn up by wolf teeth. It was enough of a mess it was hard to tell how bad. Her hands were rock steady on the shotgun she cradled in her arms. “He was going to open the door. I had to stop him. He wouldn’t have made it, he couldn’t, and I...I had to give the kids a chance.”

Marlow hesitated for a second, the words stoppered up in his throat with shock.

“You did the right thing,” Bennett said, her voice flat with conviction. “He’d have gotten you all killed.”

“Shotguns standard issue on a school bus?” Marlow asked.

Notting glanced down at the gun as if she’d forgotten it was there. Her fingers flexed against the stock.

“Not usually,” she said. “It seemed like a good idea tonight. Guess I was right.”

She tilted her head back against the seat and closed her eyes. The colour had left her face, her lips a liverish pink.

“You guys got this?” she asked. “Because I’ve lost a lot of blood and I’d like to pass out.”

Review: Shift Work (Night Shift #1) by T.A. Moore

You'd think the werewolves would be the worst thing about the Night Shift; you'd be wrong.

All Officer Kit Marlow wanted was a cup of coffee and some downtime before his next night shift. Instead, he got a naked man in the elevator and an unaccounted-for dead girl in the morgue. He's going to need to deal with both before he can head for his bed.

Or anyone else's. Although not much chance of that.

Reluctantly partnered with the acerbic security consultant Cade Deacon—last seen naked in the elevator—Marlow delves into the dead girl's life. Between them, they uncover a new crime scene with the whiff of old corruption. A corruption that, five years ago, nearly took Marlow's life and ended his career.

Finding out who killed the dead girl on the slab might only be the start of this investigation. Oh, and it's the second night of the full moon. So 80% of the city, including Cade, will turn into werewolves in the middle of the case.

So, there's that.

My second foray into Moore and I’m not disappointed despite the mild rough edges in execution, editing, and the occasional confusing bits.

This is a somewhat bleak alternate reality where the population is 80% werewolves, 20% nulls. It stands to reason that rules and regulations are skewed towards the majority where every full moon, said majority loses their logical rational thinking and becomes deadly monsters. Kit here, is a plain ole normal human being, and he works the thankless job of a law enforcement officer on the night shift. He patrols for and controls any wayward wolves, keeping homicide and destruction at a minimum if at all possible. One night, a dead girl shows up at the morgue and the evidence points towards a werewolfy suspect. This forces Kit to work with the enigmatic Cade, werewolf and CEO of private security for his kind, who can perhaps ease the way in the investigation.

Make no mistake that these two have noticed each other from afar, and now that they're in close proximity, certainly not by choice, their unwanted attraction to the other comes out nonetheless. Honestly, it was fascinating to watch their so-called flirting that was full of acerbic wit, deserved but humorous self flagellation, and an overabundance of foot in mouth syndrome. It made these guys more relatable as Cade isn’t always the cool, calm, and deadly alpha that he tries so hard to project, and Kit has a certain vulnerability that he can’t always hide behind his droll dismissive attitude.

I can see why many readers may be disgruntled with this latest release from Moore. The romantic progression, if you can call it that, goes at a snail’s pace but the sexual tension is strung bow tight and ready to be released with the littlest provocation. The one kiss we get was nothing to sneeze at, and I’m totally ok with that for now. Some things can’t and shouldn’t be rushed.

And yes, this ends on quite the cliffhanger, hinting that Kit’s past is on the brink of rearing its ugly head to wreak havoc on him again, dragging Cade along. I suspect and am thankful that Moore probably wrote this story in one sitting and decided to divvy it up into two books, and the conclusion will be shortly released if not already. I look forward to seeing how this pans out - both in the overall story arc and where these two end up!

Excerpt

The applause from the crowd was deafening. It wasn’t the first time Eddie had danced in a theatre, but this one was bigger than anything he’d ever been in before. Tiered seating extended up with row upon row of filled seats. The two giant screens facing the audience illuminated the first few rows, letting him see the faces in the crowd. He spotted his parents and brothers and sisters cheering him on. Jess too. All of them were standing now with the other families in an ovation that rejuvenated itself like waves on a beach—cresting and washing over them again every time it started to peter out. The stage lights dimmed and screens blacked out, lengthening the shadows onstage as the long red velvet curtains on either side of them began to close smoothly.

Eddie couldn’t wipe the smile from his face, even as the curtain slowed to a stop, separating the dancers and elite public school orchestra from the audience. He never wanted the performance to end. He was bouncing out of his skin, giddy with an adrenaline high. His shoulder had held up, thanks to his mum strapping it tightly, and he’d pulled every move off with a perfection he’d never dared hope for.

This was it.

His moment.
