SYNOPSIS
Noah Dixon is damaged goods. After an accident leaves him physically scarred and emotionally vulnerable, dating isn’t in the cards, so he throws himself head-first into his retail job. When he’s obligated to attend his best friend’s engagement party on Fire Island, it dawns on him he’s about to spend yet another weekend feeling totally invisible and alone among a swarm of gorgeous men.
That’s when the idea of an escort comes in.
After Will Crossen was forced to put his theater major on hold in favor of two jobs to tackle his ailing mother’s hospital bills, he tells himself becoming an escort isn’t that big of a deal. It’s just another form of acting, right? He doesn’t expect his newest customer to be the cheery, overconfident sales associate he avoids like the plague at his day job. Talk about awkward.
But what happens on Fire Island stays on Fire Island…especially when a smoldering attraction sparks into flames. Will doesn’t feel so alone anymore, and for the first time, Noah realizes someone is seeing him behind all the scars. But between their jobs, Will’s massive familial responsibilities, and Noah’s vulnerabilities, they don’t stand a chance unless they find a way to let love speak louder than their demons.

EXCERPT
Will’s thumb pressed against his bottom lip, making his mouth prickle from the contact. “You could at least pretend you’re into me.”

If only Will knew that Noah was totally into him and fighting his body all the way.

Noah’s tongue slipped out, and he licked the pad of Will’s thumb. He heard the all too authentic groan in the back of Will’s throat, and Noah’s cock stirred to life. Holy shit.

“That’s hot,” Will whispered as he watched Noah’s tongue flick against his skin again.

Encouraged, Noah hollowed his cheeks and sucked Will’s thumb into his mouth. He increased pressure as he circled with his tongue before releasing it with a pop.

He arched an eyebrow. “How was that?”

“Nicely done.” Will’s gaze was hungry, and Noah liked that he could surprise him. “Had you kept going, I would be hard as a fucking stone.”

Damn. Will was so incredibly sexy.

Noah bit his lip and batted his eyelashes. He could play along too.

Will tore his gaze away from his eyes, and as it slid down to his mouth, for a split second Noah thought Will might kiss him. His pulse spiked as he admitted to himself that he would want that. So fucking much.

Noah cleared his throat. “Anybody watching us?”

Will glanced around the party. “Definitely.”

He grinned. “Good.”

Blurb

Mars enters Pisces, giving Beckett Cooper the opportunity to assert himself when it comes to a secret infatuation; his best friend’s younger brother Levi. But can Beckett trust what’s in front of him and be brave enough to take what he wants?

With Venus in Virgo, people usually become more reserved, but Levi Byrne always takes the opposite road of what’s expected of him. So, instead of pulling back, he reaches out for a man he’s been interested in for years; Beckett Cooper.

Is it the celestial bodies aligning to bring together two people destined for each other? Or is it a simple tale of boy meets boy, boy likes boy, and boy wants to kiss boy? Do Beckett and Levi even care, or are they too busy getting to know each other ... and falling in love?

Excerpt

“Beckett?”

The voice made my stomach jump and the corners of my mouth turn up even though I was so tired I’d thought I’d never smile again just a moment ago.

“Levi. Hi!” Stubble covered his face and he approached me with a spring in his step and a happy grin that made my heart pitter-patter in my chest. Oh gawd, he was cuter than ever. “What are you doing here?” I asked.

He threw his arm around my neck in a quick, one-armed hug. The heat of his body penetrated my cold soul, but before I had time to hug him back, he let go of me and stepped back. I missed his warmth instantly. I wanted more. I wanted to bury my nose in the crook of his neck and just stay there until this crappy day was gone and forgotten. Feel his hands on my back and his soothing breaths in my ear.

Shit. I swallowed around a lump that appeared in my throat. I had it bad.

“I’m here to get some celebratory ice cream. I finished my project on time, so I thought I’d treat myself.”

“Great job. Congratulations!”

“Thanks!” His eyes sparkled at me. “Are you getting ice cream, too?”

“No. I was trying to figure out what to eat for dinner. I can’t decide what sounds the least disgusting,” I said and picked up two depressing looking boxes. “Lasagna or pepperoni pizza?”

Levi drew his eyebrows together and then took both from me and threw them back into the freezer. “You can’t eat crap like that. It’s no good for you.”

“I know,” I sighed. “But my fridge is empty and I’m too tired to both shop for groceries and cook.”

He looked at me then, swept his gaze from head to toe. “You look exhausted. I’m sorry I didn’t notice earlier.”

“It’s fine.”

With an unconvinced look on his face, he asked, “Are you all right?”

“Yeah. Just tired. I had a terrible day at work.”

“I know all about those.” He sucked his lower lip into his mouth, letting his eyes flick over my face, taking in what I was sure was tired lines around my eyes and a mouth trying its best to smile. “I have an idea,” he said after a few moments. “What if I make you dinner? I’d need to borrow your kitchen of course, but if you feel like a homecooked meal ... I’m your guy.”

I drew a breath and held it. Blinked. “Are you serious?” I asked in a whooshing exhale.

“I am.”

“But what about your ice cream celebration?”

“It can wait.”

His kindness coupled with my fatigue choked me up. Half a second from bursting into tears, I asked, “Why?”

“Because you look like you need someone to take care of you.”

I couldn’t help it then. A tear escaped. I turned my face away and squeezed my eyes shut. A part of me wanted to turn and run away, hide my stupid sensitivity from him and not be the guy who cries in the grocery store aisle. But another part knew he could be trusted and even if I broke down completely here, he wouldn’t make fun of me.

“Then yes. Thank you,” I choked out.

Gentle fingers plucked the shopping basket from my grip. His other hand found it’s way to my nape and caressed me for a second. It was just a brief touch, but it gave me the strength to wipe away the tear and look at him again.

“Let’s go. I know just the thing.”

She loves words, poetry, wine, and Sudoku, and absolutely adores elephants!

Nell believes passionately in equality for all regardless of race, gender, or sexuality, and wants to make the world a better, less hateful, place.

Nell is a forty-something bisexual Swedish woman, married to the love of her life, and a proud mama of a grown daughter. She left the Scandinavian cold and darkness for warmer and sunnier Malaysia a few years ago, and now spends her days writing, surfing the Internet, enjoying the heat, and eating good food. One day she decided to chase her lifelong dream of being a writer, sat down in front of her laptop, and wrote a story about two men falling in love.

Nell Iris writes gay romance, prefers sweet over angst, and wants to write diverse and different characters.

Review: Butterfly Assassin by Annabelle Jacobs

Murder, mystery, and an inconvenient attraction…

Shifter Aaron Harper gets drawn into illegal underground fighting to keep an eye on his best friend. The thrill of the fight keeps him coming back for more, but discovery could mean imprisonment and banishment from their pack. Without a beta to watch over them, common sense takes a back seat.

Michael Archer of the Shifter Crimes Task Force is investigating recent murders. Despite the brutal cause of death pointing to the work of a shifter’s claws, instinct tells him a well-known nightclub owner is involved, but they have no proof.

Aaron and Michael’s paths cross after another body with the same injuries is discovered. With Aaron finding himself on the wrong side of the SCTF and Michael looking for a killer, any attraction between them is both ill-advised and unlikely. But fate has other ideas.

Set in the Regent’s Park pack world, but can be read as a stand-alone.

I've been on a fairly serious crime drama kick lately so it's really difficult for me to see the words "killer" and "murders" in a blurb and not rate the book on those things. Logically I know it's not a crime drama nor should it be rated as such but it's hard to separate the two. It's not that Butterfly Assassin is a bad book I think it just doesn't know what it wants to be-mystery? romance? Fight Club, the remake?

The backdrop is illegal underground fighting that a man known as Mr. Smith runs and makes a pretty penny off of to boot. Aaron wound up in this world under strange circumstances. I think he likes the adrenaline rush of being a shifter in what's supposed to be a "humans only" fighting ring and it doesn't hurt that he's garnered a reputation and following along the way, but he also seems to hate it too. I've no idea if underground fighting is depicted well or not; it's more of a staging area than the focus anyway but why Aaron has continued to fight still alludes me. There's a lot I'll do for friends but getting the crap beat out of me on the regular is not one of them.

The mystery aspects of Butterfly Assassin are where things started to fall apart for me. I know it's not meant to be crime drama but the case of a killer brutally murdering humans by ripping their throats out is what drives the plot forward, only the procedural parts of this case are either woefully lacking or don't make sense which I found frustrating. I'm not going to nitpick each and every thing because we'd be here forever and what's the point? Suffice to say, the case and the investigation of it are flimsy at best.

Which leaves the romance between Aaron and Michael. I liked the forbidden nature of a romance between a shifter under investigation by the police officer who's investigating him even though it's clear Aaron had nothing to do with the murders early on. Their attraction slowly burns over the course of the story with UST and kissing and one quasi public blow job but I never felt their chemistry. As a romance reader what I crave and seek out is that intangible thing that binds two people together, that keeps the coming back to each other, that you feel rather than know and it just never happened with them.

What I continue to enjoy about Jacobs shifter universe is how she showcases pack dynamics. I love how tactile the alphas and betas are with the other pack members and how they respond to their superiors. I also noticed that Michael seemed to innately sense whenever Aaron was on edge and seemed to use some of those same pack techniques even though he's human which I thought was sweet. So I didn't hate Butterfly Assassin and I would probably read another book in this universe. There are good ideas here that were poorly executed in my opinion; but, my opinions are my own and YMMV.

Review: Ginger Snaps (Belladonna Arms #5) by John Inman

Even with a string of earthquakes jarring the tenants of the Belladonna Arms, rattling nerves and smashing dishes, life still manages to plod along as usual. Love pollen continues to fall, romances continue to flourish, and Arthur, the grand Pooh-bah in residence, continues to plan his upcoming wedding extravaganza.

In the midst of all this drama fall Gideon Chase and Reed Kelly, two redheaded losers at love who find themselves regrouping under the auspices of the most incorrigible matchmaker in heels.

Arthur sees hope for the two right away. He leases them adjoining apartments, then continually tweaks their budding friendship in the hope it will slip into love. Just as Arthur’s plans are coming along nicely, Reed’s past shows up to toss a monkey wrench into his and Gideon’s blossoming romance.

With Arthur’s wedding ceremony nigh, and Reed and Gideon on the verge of heartache yet again, Arthur faces one inescapable conclusion.

It will take more than love pollen to sort this mess out.

I don’t know anyone who has visited the Belladonna Arms series and not wanted to stay forever. The Love Pollen gets to everyone whether they want it to or not, and it especially seems to stick most firmly to those who don’t want it, which is always more fun for me as a reader. There’s nothing like reading about a character unlucky in love, down on romance and anti-Cupid to then have them meet Auntie Arthur who love pollens the hell out of them until they became a sappy puddle of goo. I love the goo, it’s my favorite part of the Belladonna Arms.

The couple in the fifth installment of the series are both “failures” at love when they move into the Arms. Gideon has been spectacularly dumped by his douchebag of an ex and is left with nothing but his car, laptop and a small sampling of questionable clothing. Our other MC, Reed has recently come to the revelation that he needs to live as his authentic self, a gay man, and he can no longer keep up the charade of a happy hetero marriage. The two have little in common besides the unlucky in love part and the fact that they are both a couple of ginger peaches.

They both proclaim to not be attracted to gingers but we the readers know from the get-go that these two are lying liars who lie about that subject. I think these two MC’s, well mostly Reed, had more emotional baggage moving into the arms than previous characters. And I’m not talking Ramon level external-forces issues, I mean internal baggage where he needs to figure out who he is in his own skin so that he can learn how to love himself and love a man how they both deserve to be loved. It’s a tough road for Reed because he’s a really good guy, so he feels a tremendous amount of guilt for the hurt he put his wife through and it weighs on him understandably. Gideon has been his authentic self forever and he’s a good fit for Reed. He asks Reed the hard questions and with a gentle, but firm touch, pushes Reed out of his shell. Reed feels happier than he ever had in his adult life and he credits Gideon for getting him there.

They agree to a friends with benefits thing, which technically is a good idea considering their not so distant past romantic entanglements, but it’s obvious the two of them are growing closer. This is where John Inman’s words shine. He is so damn good at showing the reader how two characters come together. I don’t have to be told that they are falling in love, I read it in every interaction and inner musing both in and out of the bedroom.

Throughout the time of the budding romance of Gideon and Reed the other tenants make welcome appearances and Arthur is planning his dream wedding to Tom. I honestly could read that whole story as a book by itself because Arthur is Arthur but with all his settings cranked up to 11. He always had one eye on Gideon and Reed though, he can never get completely sidetracked by anything that will take him away from his self imposed match making duties.

The extra baggage I mentioned previously is heavier and makes a pretty profound return to Reed’s life. This part was heartbreaking and not something I have become accustomed to in my Belladonna books. It made sense for Reed’s character though and while I wanted to punch him in the throat, I also wasn’t at all surprised at his actions. It turns out he’s not just unlucky at love, he’s also none too smart about it either. Sometimes people can take the high road too high out of misguided loyalty and that is Reed in a nutshell. Thankfully he does have his Auntie Arthur to help him get his shit together and it wouldn’t have resolved without Arthur’s interference. Now granted, the dramatics and the resolution were pretty sugarcoated considering, they weren’t made disposable and the author dealt with them at a level that made the whole plot point consistent with the tone of the book.

The ending was perfect and I hope it doesn’t mean the end of the Belladonna Arms series. There was nothing alluding to that but seriously, what does one do after an Arthur wedding? I have faith though because as long as Arthur has couples moving in together he’ll have a vacancy or two for new residents available. I do love these character driven romances and the strength in the MC’s is the bond the author builds between them while we watch. Not every writer can pull that off well, but John Inman is a true craftsman when it comes to connecting two people in the most authentic of ways.

Review: What's the Use of Wondering? (WMU #2) by Kate McMurray

Violinist Logan has spent most of his life training for a career in music. But as the pressure mounts during his junior year, he questions whether playing in an orchestra is the future he wants, or one chosen by his parents. His new roommate—that annoying jerk Peter from last year’s production of Guys and Dolls—complicates matters. Crammed into a dorm room with the overconfident but undeniably hot accounting major, Logan can’t stop snarling.

Then Peter sprains his ankle building sets, and Logan grudgingly agrees to play chauffeur. But instead of putting further strain on their relationship, spending time together reveals some common ground—and mutual frustration. Logan discovers he isn’t the only one who doesn’t know what he wants from life, and the animosity between him and Peter changes keys. But just as the possibility of a happier future appears, Logan gets a dream offer that will take him away from Western Massachusetts University—and Peter. Now he has to decide: will he live the solitary life laid out for him, or hold on to Peter and forge his own path?

I have a minor confession; I am a musical lover. It’s not a terrible confession but I adore musicals, I even have a few favorites on vinyl and often break into song just because. I wonder why life can’t be like a musical where a simple walk down the street can’t turn into a song and dance where everyone knows the moves and words. Bjork did it in a video and Enchanted captured it perfectly on film so what I am trying to say is when I read the title of this book, I didn’t actually read it… you see, I turned into Bernadette Peters and sang the classic from Carousel.

Now that we have that bit of information.

This was a really sweet and slow burn kind of roommate to romance story and I adored it. Told from Logan’s POV we meet him as he is being assigned a new roommate his junior year at WMU and it’s not who he expected. Last year, Logan had a run in with a Theater Tech who let Logan know he was killing himself by smoking and now, the Tech aka as Peter is his roommate. It’s not such a problem for Logan but it is because Peter is a hot blond jock who Logan assumes is straight and they really don’t hit it off to begin with. The boys pretty much stay out of each other’s way as Logan focuses on his violin rehearsals moving toward a career in performance orchestra and Peter one in accounting. But being roommates and in each other’s space can lead to unrequited crushes and misunderstandings.
Life is uncertain. You never know what’s about to happen. Sometimes what feels like the worst turns out to be the best.
When Peter has a fall while working with one of the sets for the Guys and Dolls show and his ride around campus bails on him, he asks Logan to help him out and Logan is too nice of a guy to say no. But one single sentence that Logan takes the wrong way puts a strain on this new almost amicable friendship between them and almost ruins a beautiful romance that never even began.
“Do you even know the effect you have on me? Do you know how fucking hot you are?”
“Why are we arguing about this?”
“I don’t know. Why are you cleaning your half of the room when we should be kissing?”
I truly adore both Logan and Peter. These boys are under so much pressure from their parents to be who their parents want without regard to what they want. They are so focused on doing the right thing that they almost miss the chance to be with the person that is right under their nose or at least right across the dorm room. The feelings Logan has for Peter are laid out clearly even when he thinks Peter is straight but after reading an LGBT article Peter wrote that included a story about him coming out, Logan decides he needs to apologize for judging Peter without knowing who he really was. I loved how honest these young men were with one another from the beginning even when they aren’t exactly sure how to move forward with their romance.

Honestly, the build up to Logan and Peter with their crush confessions and then them moving forward was nice but everything after that was even better. I love college age romances because it’s lovely to watch young people figure their lives out and I get to live the college experience I never had through them. Roommate romances though are so much fun! You are in this space, sharing space with another person who you find attractive and then once the physical starts followed by emotions there is always this bit of angst around because what happens if it doesn’t work out? Thankfully, Logan and Peter find out right away that only honesty will do with them and I fell hard for their romance as they learn to be friends and lovers looking toward the future.
“We’ll rebel together, here in this room, even if no one else knows about it.”
I could ramble a good deal about the details of violin playing and how I could see and almost feel Logan as he played and hear the notes coming from his instrument. I could ramble about Peter and how steadfast he is in his love for art and painting and how freaking supportive he is of Logan. I could ramble about how I liked the way the author handled sex between these two and didn’t over saturate the story with it because they were more than sex though when they were together, I felt it. I could ramble about Logan coming back to the dorm after talking with his parents and how much I loved the epilogue or how I need to go back and read Dave and Noel’s story because it’s definitely one I need to read or… I could stop here and go listen to Maria and The Captain sing about doing Something Good.

Review: The Necromancer's Reckoning (The Beacon Hill Sorcerer #3) by S.J. Himes

Every action has consequences.
For a decade, Angel Salvatore has been the most powerful sorcerer and only necromancer in all the Northeast. Never one to ask permission nor apologies, he has acted with near impunity for years.
Until now.
The High Council of Sorcery has come to Boston, and Angel is their target. Charged with numerous violations of practitioner laws, his freedom and family are placed in jeopardy.
If found guilty, Angel's apprentice Daniel will be imprisoned to serve out the remaining years of his apprenticeship. Isaac, his brother, is too vulnerable to be left unguarded, and Angel fears for his sanity and health. And Simeon, Elder vampire and Angel's mate, refuses to see Angel convicted under the laws of the Council and his actions to keep Angel free threaten to start a war that could destroy their world. And Angel faces the severest of punishments—the castration of his gifts.
The Council has never cared for the people of Boston, and Angel doubts their motives. They have come for some insidious reason, and it has nothing to do with upholding the law and everything to do with Angel.
Dealing with an impending trial, a wayward ghost, and a graverobbing ring of thieves leaves Angel on the edge. He thinks he may have a handle on things until violence erupts across the city, and a stranger comes to town...a stranger with his own dark powers of necromancy.

This series just gets better and better, and what I love about this is the complex world that’s full of sorcerers and vampires and all sorts of supernatural beings that live in a tentative harmony with humans. Here, it’s that very harmony that is threatened when the High Council of Magic, a powerful entity that governs practitioners, expresses a not so friendly interest in our hero, Angel.

There’s not really any point in rehashing the plot. If you haven’t started this series, then I highly recommend delving into Necromancer’s Dance where it all begins. What I will say is that this is fast paced, full of action and magic, and never short on the power plays encompassing the complex magical/supernatural hierarchy that abounds.

Bit by bit, Himes reveals more about this fascinating AU and it wasn’t nearly enough. Let’s just say Angel and Simeon continue to make a formidable pair, and it’s their very bond that is coveted for nefarious means. However, they’re nobody’s pawn, and whoever deigns to think they’ll easily submit or succumb are in for a brutal rude awakening.

This had some editing issues for those who need to know. It was also more lite on the smex than the previous installments. However, those things hardly mattered. There’s enough to propel the reader through, including blossoming romances regarding brother Isaac and vampire master Batiste, as well as a nice nudge for apprentice Daniel towards an enigmatic fae. AND don’t forget the bestest cutest dragon familiar ever who steals every scene he’s in! I love you Eroch!

So, I obviously enjoyed this. The only thing that sucks donkey balls is the unknown amount of waiting I'll have to endure until the next book comes out! Darn!

Welcome Alyssa Turner who's here today to tell us about her popular MMF romance novel Polished being released in audio format. Find out more below and ICYMI here's our review of the ebook.

I’ve always been mystified by men.  Maybe it’s my single-parent-mother upbringing. A lack of testosterone around the house growing up had me wondering how males were different. I figured the whole peeing standing up was just the tip of the iceberg. There were probably secret guy codes and rules. They likely talked about things together that would never come up when I was around. Soon, I found myself seeking conversation with boys just to understand what made them tick.

Many, MANY years later, I still adore delving into the male mind and looking through male eyes at the world by way of my characters.  The teenage girl living somewhere inside of me is still enthralled with the secret lives of men.  I love their dialogue, their quirks, their swagger and their vulnerability.

When casting voice artist for my MMF ménage series, Polished, it was an immeasurable delight to hear my words spill from male lips.  The biggest compliment was to hear how natural the dialogue was. Though my male characters are very different from one another, the amazing actor playing Spencer and Jack, brought them to life in a way I could have only dreamed of. Forever imagining being a fly on the wall to witness males in their natural state, now all I have to do is pop in my ear buds!  It’s the closest I can get.

Tag Team Review: The Henchmen of Zenda by K.J. Charles

Swordfights, lust, betrayal, murder: just another day for a henchman.

Jasper Detchard is a disgraced British officer, now selling his blade to the highest bidder. Currently that's Michael Elphberg, half-brother to the King of Ruritania. Michael wants the throne for himself, and Jasper is one of the scoundrels he hires to help him take it. But when Michael makes his move, things don’t go entirely to plan—and the penalty for treason is death.

Rupert of Hentzau is Michael's newest addition to his sinister band of henchmen. Charming, lethal, and intolerably handsome, Rupert is out for his own ends—which seem to include getting Jasper into bed. But Jasper needs to work out what Rupert’s really up to amid a maelstrom of plots, swordfights, scheming, impersonation, desire, betrayal, and murder.

Nobody can be trusted. Everyone has a secret. And love is the worst mistake you can make.

A retelling of the swashbuckling classic The Prisoner of Zenda from a very different point of view.

Another entertaining tale from KJ Charles!

I haven’t read The Prisoner of Zenda, and so had no idea of Ruritanian romance. But I thoroughly enjoyed the outcome - a blend of adventure, political intrigue, complex characters, and an out-of-the-ordinary romance.

The book introduces us to Jasper Detchard, a mercenary with little to no scruples. He moves from one European country to the next, doing the bidding of whoever buys his sword. But Jasper has one fatal flaw - he’s incredibly loyal to the few people he considers his own.

This loyalty brings him to Ruritania, a small European country ruled by the dysfunctional and despotic Elphbergs. Jasper enters the service of Michael Elphberg, the illegitimate half-brother of the king, and soon finds himself in the middle of a grand conspiracy.

I love some good action fiction in a historical setting. ‘The Henchmen of Zenda’ delivers on that front. Ruritania is a land of intrigue, the result of a ruling family that spends a lot of time fighting amongst themselves, and that has little regard for the common people.

We see the story play out through Jasper’s POV, with the web of lies, back-stabbing, murder, and double-crossing getting more and more complicated as the story progresses.

I won’t give anything away, except to say that if you like swashbuckling tales of adventure and mayhem, this’ll be right up your alley!

While the adventure itself was highly entertaining, another big attraction as Rupert of Hentzau, a minor Ruritanian nobleman also in Michael Elphberg’s service. Where Jasper is sober and prefers to work in the shadows, Rupert is a peacock. He has a zest for life and just wants to spend his days fighting and fucking.

The attraction between Jasper and Rupert is immediate, but it takes a while for the two to admit anything more than that. They’re hard men who live hard lives, and so keep their emotions under check. But they definitely show each other how the feel in the bedroom!

This isn’t your typical MM romance. If you’re expecting grand declarations of love, you won’t find them here. But it’s very obvious that Rupert and Jasper find in each other an equal match that gives them the happiness they didn’t expect to ever want or find.

I would describe the ending as a happy ever after. It’s not your typical HEA, but these aren’t your typical MCs. It’s certainly the perfect ending for Jasper and Rupert.

If you’re looking for an MM read with with an enthralling adventure plot and don’t mind a different sort of love story, I’d definitely recommend ‘The Henchmen of Zenda’!

Lost in a Book - 3.75 Hearts

It’s official, I’ll absolutely read it if KJC writes it. The Henchmen of Zenda is an intriguing, snarky, ever changing ride with a psychopathic Duke, his hired swords, and never ending betrayals.

Please check out the warning KJC has issued on this book. It isn’t a romance but there are romantic-ish elements. There are smexy times and a very compatible pairing between the MCs. However, the romantic-ish elements should be classified as more of mutual understanding with open communication and a fond unconventional companionship.

Jasper Detchard and Rupert of Hentzau are working side by side as hired swords for Michael Elphberg, half-brother to the King of Ruritania. They immediately dislike each other as Hentzau is social with a zest for life that Jasper finds infuriating. Their wit and challenges soon turn to a partnership with benefits as they work under Elphberg and around the schemes to unseat a future king.

The plot shifts constantly throughout as circumstances change and alliances are made. I’ve never read The Prisoner of Zenda and will say that this version is definitely not for the squeamish. There is a trigger warning for abuse of a secondary character. There are also many murders that take place in detail.

The beginning and end of the story are fast paced and captivating. There was a lull throughout the middle that took a bit longer to get through but the quality of writing never falters. I appreciate the strong representation with the women characters and the support of them by the MCs. Obviously I would have liked more romantic elements because I like a side of *swoon* with my reads. However, that’s on me since we are clearly warned. I’m glad I took a chance and recommend it for those that love historical adventure.
