Book Description

Planning a wedding is hard enough without international politics, an assassin, your fiancé’s ex-boyfriend and your mother to deal with.

NYPD Detective Frank Schultt and his fiancé, FBI Agent Aaron Massey, have bought a new condo, adopted a dog and are planning their wedding. But when an international assassin starts killing people on the streets of New York City, Aaron and Frank must work together to find the killer before she strikes again.

Combine the assassin with the pressure of Frank’s jealousy when Aaron’s ex-boyfriend comes back to town, and can their relationship withstand the pressure? Will Aaron and Frank make it to the altar on time, or will the assassin and Frank’s destructive behavior stop their wedding before it ever heads down the aisle?

Publisher's Note: This book is best read as the sequel to Twelve Days of Murder.

Excerpt

Frank stared around the pink office, wondering if a bottle of Pepto Bismol had accidentally spilled. He watched the perky blonde woman sitting in front of him, doing his best to pay attention. It wasn’t exactly how Frank liked to spend his Saturday mornings. But it was Aaron’s big day, so he’d promised to grin and bear it.

“With Central Park wedding locations, we are definitely somewhat limited. For example, the Bow Bridge only allows for ten guests and the Belvedere Castle Terrace only allows thirty. The North Garden, Southern Garden, Wisteria Pergola and Cherry Hill each allow for up to one hundred. What size are you two thinking?”

“Eloping,” Frank muttered.

“Twenty-five to fifty,” Aaron said, shooting Frank a sideways glance.

“I’m joking,” Frank reassured, patting Aaron’s leg and giving it a squeeze before turning to the woman. “Whatever Aaron wants, I want him to have.”

NYPD Detective Frank Schultt and FBI Special Agent Aaron Massey had met the previous year during a serial murder spree. The Twelve-Day Killer, as dubbed by the media, had terrorized NYC over the holidays. Aaron and Frank had put their lives and careers on the line hunting the bastard down. In the process, they had found each other.

Frank glanced over at the man he loved. God, where would I be without him? He reached up and rubbed the back of Aaron’s neck gently. From the top of Aaron’s head with his dark brown quaff haircut and his Caribbean ocean-blue eyes, to his lithe but fit body, Frank took in this man sitting beside him who was going to be his husband. Frank was still stunned at his good fortune in landing the affection of such an amazingly intelligent and gorgeous man.

Realizing his thoughts had drifted, Frank brought his attention back to the woman sitting in front of him, who was rattling on about Central Park weddings. He glanced down at her nameplate, ‘Amber Wethersfield’. The woman was in her late twenties. And judging by the giant diamond on her wedding ring, her husband was definitely wealthy. Frank glanced across the pink office looking for personal items and was surprised by the lack of photos. For a woman who sells marriage, where are the pictures of her happy day?

“So, do you have an officiant for your wedding lined up? If not, I have a list of great people who work with LGBTQIA+ people.”

“Huh?” Frank blurted before he could catch himself.

“Officiant…the person who will oversee the ceremony and the exchange of your vows,” Amber offered.

“No, you listed off a bunch of letters,” Frank said.

“Oh.” Amber perked up. “Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer-questioning, intersexed, asexual and others.”

Dear God, that sounds like a gay BLT. Frank was about to make the snide comment, but a quick glance from Aaron told him that he’d better hold his tongue. Instead, Frank just nodded his head and gave a thin-lipped smile.

“Actually, we have a few people in mind,” Aaron noted. “Frank knows a judge who volunteered her services, and we have a couple of other names in the hopper as well.”

“Oh, good,” Amber said. “You’d be amazed at how many people totally forget the officiant until the last minute. I even have a license I got from an online church because I’ve had to step in at the eleventh hour when something went horribly wrong. I just don’t enjoy being in the wedding party, because it makes it harder for me to run things behind the scenes.”

Frank leaned back in the chair and watched as Aaron and Amber discussed the wedding. This wasn’t Frank’s first. He’d been married, but his husband had been murdered in a liquor store robbery on Christmas Eve over six years ago. As much as Frank loved Aaron, there was still a vast hole in his heart that had been left by Adam’s death. But Frank loved Aaron and was going to make sure their wedding day was every bit of glitz and glamour that Aaron desired.

“Well, if you have questions,” Amber said, bringing Frank’s attention back once again, “just let me know. You have my email, cell phone, home phone and office phone numbers, so never hesitate to reach out. I look forward to working with both of you on your big day.”

Amber stood up from her desk to usher the couple out of her office. She pushed herself up, exposing her pregnant belly.

“When’s the due date?” Aaron asked.

“Mid-March. But I swear she’s ready to come out any day.”

Frank stared at her belly and just thought, Are you sure there’s only one in there? But once again, he held his tongue.

“Don’t worry. I won’t miss your big day. When I’m out on maternity leave, my assistant will take over the day-to-day preparations, and he’ll be in constant contact with me. When I had my first baby, we were texting right up until they told me to push.”

“Well, it was really was nice meeting you,” Frank said.

“Likewise. And I just have to say, you two make such a cute couple.”

“Thank you,” Aaron said. “I think he’s a keeper.” Aaron gave Amber a little wink before turning to leave.

As Frank followed suit, Aaron’s hand rested in the small of Frank’s back. Frank leaned into Aaron in response.

“Earth to Frank!” Aaron said as they exited onto the sidewalk. The February chill immediately caught Aaron off guard, and he lifted the collar on the trench coat to protect his neck.

“Huh, what?”

“I said, “Earth to Frank.” What’s going on inside that head of yours?”

“Overwhelmed, I guess.”

“How so?”

“The whole wedding planning is just bringing up some memories.”

Aaron squeezed Frank. “I hadn’t thought about that. I forget that you’ve done this before.”

“Yeah,” Frank said, scrunching his forehead. “It’s surreal. Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited to be marrying you. I hope you know that. It’s just that it brings up memories of Adam.”

“I get it,” Aaron said. “I would be surprised if it didn’t, to be honest.” Aaron hesitated for a second before adding, “Just know…I will never try to replace Adam. I know what you two had was special—”

“What we have is special too.”

“I know,” Aaron acknowledged. “I just want you to know that I love you and would never try to change you…warts and all.”

“God, I hope I don’t have any warts.”

“We all have warts. Some have them physically and others have them metaphorically.”

“Sure thing, professor,” Frank teased.

After dealing with the Twelve-Day Killer, Aaron had taken a teaching position part-time with the John Jay School of Criminal Justice. He was technically still on the FBI’s payroll, but his utility as an undercover agent had taken a hit after the amount of press the Twelve-Day Killer had received. And with the forthcoming publication of his new book about the case, Aaron and Frank both knew a fresh round of press attention was right around the corner.

“So, we didn’t have breakfast after the gym this morning,” Aaron said. “Shall we have a quick brunch before heading back to the apartment to get ready?”

“Do we have time?” Frank asked, glancing down at his watch. “It’s already ten a.m. What time is the car picking us up for the reading?”

“The reading’s at two o’clock, so the car is scheduled to pick us up about one-fifteen.”

“I guess we have plenty of time. Any suggestions on where we should eat?”

“How about 9Ten?” Aaron asked, referring to one of their favorite diners.

“Lead the way.”

Private investigator Sloane Beaumont should be enjoying his recent engagement to eldritch god Azaethoth the Lesser, AKA Loch. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have time for a pre-honeymoon period.

The trouble starts with a deceptively simple missing persons case. That leads to the discovery of mass kidnappings, nefarious secret experiments, and the revelation that another ancient god is trying to bring about the end of the world by twisting humans into an evil army.

Just another day at the office.

Sloane does his best to juggle wedding planning, stopping his fiancé from turning the mailman inside out, and meeting his future godly in-laws while working the case, but they're also being hunted by a strange young man with incredible abilities. With the wedding date looming closer, Sloane and Loch must combine their powers to discover the truth—because it’s not just their own happy-ever-after at stake, but the fate of the world….

Excerpt

“Hi!” the young man said. “It’s okay! You can just call me Jay.” He smiled down at the carrier. “This is Mr. Twigs!”

“Please, come in,” Sloane said, trying to fix his hair as he opened the office door. He ushered Jay in, saying politely, “So, your roommate is missing?”

“Yes,” Jay said, setting the carrier on Sloane’s desk and opening it up. “Everyone at the department thinks I’m going nuts, and Milo said you would be able to help me.”

“I’ll definitely do my best!”

“My roommate has been missing for almost two days now, and this is not like him at all. He hasn’t been to work, he hasn’t been home, but his car is still in the parking lot. The detectives wanted me to wait before filing a missing persons report, and nobody is listening to me.”

“And you think that Mr. Twigs here might be responsible?”

“I’m Silenced, so you know, no magic for me, but I know the sound portals make. I’ve heard it on a ton of documentaries. I know I heard one right before he vanished, and no one else was home except Mr. Twigs.”

The cat slinked out of the carrier and perched right on the corner of Sloane’s desk, its tail swishing. It was fluffy, black, and it was wearing small round sunglasses.

Loch kneeled down, eyeing the cat suspiciously. They were nearly nose to nose, locked in an intense stare.

“Huh,” Sloane said, blinking slowly. “The cat… wears sunglasses?”

“Oh!” Jay blushed. “I know it sounds crazy, but his eyes are really sensitive to light. So yeah. I tried to take them off and he got really upset.”

“Wait, you didn’t buy them?”

“Oh no!” Jay laughed. “He had them on when I found him. He’s a rescue, and he’s, like, literally the sweetest—”

“He is a foul and wretched creature!” Loch suddenly shouted, spinning wildly and promptly smacking the cat across the room. “Go back to the depths of Xenon, you disgusting fiend!”

“Mr. Twigs!” Jay screamed in horror.

“Azaethoth!” Sloane roared, shocked and furious. “How could you? It’s just a cat!”

“That is not a cat!” Loch argued, his tentacles beginning to unfurl. “It’s a monstrous fiend that just looks like a cat!”

“Owww,” a new voice complained, the fluffy black cat picking himself up from the floor and yowling in complaint. He hopped back up on the desk, his tail lashing as he hissed, “That was super rude!”

“Mr. Twigs…?” Jay stared in awe. He started to reach for the cat but drew back. “You’re… you’re talking?”

“Duh,” the cat replied sweetly. “Now, Jay, why don’t you forget all about this and go to sleep?”

Jay’s eyes rolled back, and he immediately dropped on  the carpet face-first.

“What the fuck are you?” Sloane demanded, his hands moving to summon a shield of bright starlight. Loch stood in front of him protectively, his thick tentacles writhing around him and poised to strike at any second.

The cat laughed, transforming into a very thin and very naked young man. He tilted his sunglasses down, grinning slyly to reveal a mouthful of pointed teeth as he teased, “Meow, motherfuckers. Name’s Asta. I’m here to save the world.”

Review: Father of the Groom (Love and Care #1) by Silvia Violet

Avery has a good life. He loves his job as a makeup artist, and he’s ecstatic about being Twink of Honor in his best friend’s wedding. He’s more than capable of supporting himself, but that doesn’t stop him from longing for an older man who’ll take care of him.

Graham Hillingdon has finally repaired his relationship with his son, and he’s thrilled to be part of his son’s wedding day, though he wishes he had a plus one to bring with him. Sadly, he has yet to find a man who appreciates both his dominant and nurturing sides; maybe even someone to call him Daddy.

When Avery and Graham meet at the wedding, attraction sizzles between them, and they end up spending an insanely hot night together. Graham makes sure Avery knows exactly who’s in charge in bed, but afterwards, he’s exquisitely gentle. This is just what Avery needs, and Graham is certain he’s finally found a man who desires what he has to give. Neither of them wants to part the next day, but between their age difference and their reluctance to reveal their relationship to Graham’s son, they wonder if they have any chance for a future together. But as perfect as they are for each other, shouldn’t it be worth the risk?

If daddy kink makes you swoon and purr, Father of the Groom is your catnip. I love me some daddy kink done right and by that I mean I want more than just some gratuitous PWP. Not that gratuitous PWP doesn’t have its place, it does, but then it can’t really be a thing for more than 30 pages or so. After that you’re probably just being ridiculous.

Father of the Groom has both P . . . AND . . . P. So, it wins! It’s plenty filthy, which is what you should expect from a Silvia Violet book about a twink and a daddy, May/December story. But, there is character development and motivation behind the kink that makes the story interesting and made me feel invested in a future for Avery and Graham. Seriously, how great are the names Avery and Graham for these two? One guess as to which dude is which.

Avery is the “twink of honor” at his BFF’s wedding. He’s also an amazing cosmetologist and makes the bridal party almost as pretty as he is. Graham is the father of the groom who’s coming out caused a huge rift in the family, but he’s worked hard to repair the relationship he has with his kids and it’s actually quite sweet to be in his head when he thinks about them. He’s incredibly respectful of their feelings and that said a lot about Graham as a person. The author is consistently good at giving characters added depth through their relationships with secondary characters. I’m being shown who they are, not told and when you have a book full of kink it helps to have that added to dimension so you can take the MC’s seriously outside of the sex.

The two are attracted to one another from the moment they lay hungry eyes on each other and they figured out they both hit the jackpot with their kinks within the first few sentences of dialog between them. The whole, I’m-at-my-son/BFF’s-wedding-and-I-shouldn’t-be-thinking-so-much-about-my/his-dick/ass-right-now-but-I’m-still-going-to-bone-the-night-away thoughts happened, but that was cool, because these are grown ass men having a good time, but their concern made sense for them and their relationships with the bride and groom.

What I appreciated most was the communication between Avery and Graham. As I mentioned, they hit hard on each others sexual needs, but they also communicated beyond that. Meaning, they both were on the same page when it came to how far the daddy play goes in real life. Sometimes the kink can overwhelm the story and the MC’s are too one dimensional to take seriously beyond the aforementioned 30 pages, but Avery is adamant about being self reliant and Graham recognizes and respects that. When Avery says he wants someone to take care of him he doesn’t mean it in a Sugar Daddy sense. He wants someone he is going to take over and he can trust them enough to completely let himself go in the bedroom. Graham needs to dominate and care for a lover, so they complimented each other completely. They even spoke of not having to “play” every time they had sex. It made the whole scenario way more believable in the vanilla light of day.

Just because Avery is self sufficient doesn’t mean can’t be a big old drama queen when things go slightly askew. It fit his personality and his need to be able to trust completely and let go. The dust up was really not that big of a deal, but for Avery, trust is the whole deal and again, drama queen, so a snit was had. A snit was needed to keep the story grounded and shake off some of the perfection that had been going on so far. The drama was short lived, which I liked, and Avery and Graham had a serious chat before Avery hopped back on the daddy dick, proving that he is pretty good at the adulting thing after all.

The story ends on a very optimistic HFN with more to come in the series (of which I will be partaking of every story). I came for the kink but stayed for the characters and I feel pretty invested in their happiness now. Their dynamic is fun and will be worthy of a reread or two at least.

Guest Review: The Billionaire's Wedding (My Billionaire #2) by Geoffrey Knight

Italy’s Amalfi Coast, overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean Sea, is the dream location for the perfect wedding, and billionaire Calvin Croft is determined to pull out all the stops to make his marriage to Matt Darcy a day that nobody will forget.

But before Matt and Cal can walk down the aisle and say ‘I do’, someone uninvited turns up out of the blue… and turns Cal’s life completely upside-down.

Will Matt ever get to marry the man of his dreams? Will Cal be able to come to terms with his past and get on with his future? Or will an unwelcome guest put their romance on the rocks forever?

You’re invited to the wedding of the year as Matt, Cal, Mrs. Mulroney, Mr. Banks, Tilly and Angus return for more hilarious antics, swooning romance and a surprise that none of them will see coming!

** Sequel to The Billionaire's Boyfriend

Reviewer: Shee Reviewer

Our book opens with the flight from hell for Matt as he travels to Italy to marry his wonderful boyfriend Calvin. His chosen family, who share his small apartment block in New York includes Mrs. Mulroney (the borderline alcoholic florist), Tilly (the upstairs kid who is super smart and often hangs out when she’s lonely) and Mr Banks the senile veteran and tall-story teller). The notion of chosen family is one I love, so this was perfect in all its imperfect people!

I really enjoyed The Billionaire’s Boyfriend (My Billionaire Book1) and this book was no different. The characters are almost cartoonish in their caricatures, but are so very funny! The presence of Matt and Cal’s chosen family (as crazy as they are) added to the wedding fun.

Cal is the super calm billionaire who waits to pick up his fiancé and the crazy people from the airport. Of all the characters in the book Cal is the only one who feels slightly flat to me. Perhaps it is because in light of all the other folks, he’s positively boring?

Anyhoo, the trail of the wedding begins. Enter the villain (Calvin’s long lost mother who abandoned him and his Down’s Syndrome brother when Cal was a baby) who is as horrific as can be. The group then work together to save Cal from disaster..

This is a funny, sweet, charming caper of a book.

Recommended!

I was given a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Review: Ginger Snaps (Belladonna Arms #5) by John Inman

Even with a string of earthquakes jarring the tenants of the Belladonna Arms, rattling nerves and smashing dishes, life still manages to plod along as usual. Love pollen continues to fall, romances continue to flourish, and Arthur, the grand Pooh-bah in residence, continues to plan his upcoming wedding extravaganza.

In the midst of all this drama fall Gideon Chase and Reed Kelly, two redheaded losers at love who find themselves regrouping under the auspices of the most incorrigible matchmaker in heels.

Arthur sees hope for the two right away. He leases them adjoining apartments, then continually tweaks their budding friendship in the hope it will slip into love. Just as Arthur’s plans are coming along nicely, Reed’s past shows up to toss a monkey wrench into his and Gideon’s blossoming romance.

With Arthur’s wedding ceremony nigh, and Reed and Gideon on the verge of heartache yet again, Arthur faces one inescapable conclusion.

It will take more than love pollen to sort this mess out.

I don’t know anyone who has visited the Belladonna Arms series and not wanted to stay forever. The Love Pollen gets to everyone whether they want it to or not, and it especially seems to stick most firmly to those who don’t want it, which is always more fun for me as a reader. There’s nothing like reading about a character unlucky in love, down on romance and anti-Cupid to then have them meet Auntie Arthur who love pollens the hell out of them until they became a sappy puddle of goo. I love the goo, it’s my favorite part of the Belladonna Arms.

The couple in the fifth installment of the series are both “failures” at love when they move into the Arms. Gideon has been spectacularly dumped by his douchebag of an ex and is left with nothing but his car, laptop and a small sampling of questionable clothing. Our other MC, Reed has recently come to the revelation that he needs to live as his authentic self, a gay man, and he can no longer keep up the charade of a happy hetero marriage. The two have little in common besides the unlucky in love part and the fact that they are both a couple of ginger peaches.

They both proclaim to not be attracted to gingers but we the readers know from the get-go that these two are lying liars who lie about that subject. I think these two MC’s, well mostly Reed, had more emotional baggage moving into the arms than previous characters. And I’m not talking Ramon level external-forces issues, I mean internal baggage where he needs to figure out who he is in his own skin so that he can learn how to love himself and love a man how they both deserve to be loved. It’s a tough road for Reed because he’s a really good guy, so he feels a tremendous amount of guilt for the hurt he put his wife through and it weighs on him understandably. Gideon has been his authentic self forever and he’s a good fit for Reed. He asks Reed the hard questions and with a gentle, but firm touch, pushes Reed out of his shell. Reed feels happier than he ever had in his adult life and he credits Gideon for getting him there.

They agree to a friends with benefits thing, which technically is a good idea considering their not so distant past romantic entanglements, but it’s obvious the two of them are growing closer. This is where John Inman’s words shine. He is so damn good at showing the reader how two characters come together. I don’t have to be told that they are falling in love, I read it in every interaction and inner musing both in and out of the bedroom.

Throughout the time of the budding romance of Gideon and Reed the other tenants make welcome appearances and Arthur is planning his dream wedding to Tom. I honestly could read that whole story as a book by itself because Arthur is Arthur but with all his settings cranked up to 11. He always had one eye on Gideon and Reed though, he can never get completely sidetracked by anything that will take him away from his self imposed match making duties.

The extra baggage I mentioned previously is heavier and makes a pretty profound return to Reed’s life. This part was heartbreaking and not something I have become accustomed to in my Belladonna books. It made sense for Reed’s character though and while I wanted to punch him in the throat, I also wasn’t at all surprised at his actions. It turns out he’s not just unlucky at love, he’s also none too smart about it either. Sometimes people can take the high road too high out of misguided loyalty and that is Reed in a nutshell. Thankfully he does have his Auntie Arthur to help him get his shit together and it wouldn’t have resolved without Arthur’s interference. Now granted, the dramatics and the resolution were pretty sugarcoated considering, they weren’t made disposable and the author dealt with them at a level that made the whole plot point consistent with the tone of the book.

The ending was perfect and I hope it doesn’t mean the end of the Belladonna Arms series. There was nothing alluding to that but seriously, what does one do after an Arthur wedding? I have faith though because as long as Arthur has couples moving in together he’ll have a vacancy or two for new residents available. I do love these character driven romances and the strength in the MC’s is the bond the author builds between them while we watch. Not every writer can pull that off well, but John Inman is a true craftsman when it comes to connecting two people in the most authentic of ways.

Review: Building Forever (The Rebuilding Year #2.5) by Kaje Harper

Four years ago, Ryan and John decided they'd wait to get married until it came with full legal equality. Now, thanks to the Supreme Court, that historic moment has finally arrived. But three hundred miles separate Ryan's hectic residency from John's busy campus job. With a son in college, a daughter choosing her future, and a rambunctious Irish Setter needing attention, planning a wedding isn't simple.

Of course, even the most perfect ceremony can't solve all their problems. What does it take to build forever?

Fans of this author, especially those of this series, will not be disappointed with this addition.

I think what I like about Kaje Harper's writing is the realness it possesses. Even her stories that veer far from reality (werewolves for example) contain an essence of truth and realism within the characters. Reactions, feelings, actions are all relatable and that is what gives this author's style heart. It's exactly what I can't get enough of when I read her books.

Gay marriage has been a long time coming in many (most) countries, and the fight for the right to wed has been particularly well documented in the USA - a country supposedly at the forefront of modern civilisation. Anyone who sees any news knows that though this is a right won it is constantly under threat. I think this is why this story had such heart for me. I'm lucky enough to be heterosexual; lucky because my rights do not have to be fought for, they are there already, and when I wanted to get married (albeit I'm not in/from the US) there was no question that I could. Ryan and John did not have that luxury - and, while they may be fictional, they represent millions who aren't. Kaje could have made this series overtly political. Overtly a fight. Overtly a drama. But she didn't; she made it a series about two men in love who want to get married. For me this made the underlying difficulty, the unfair wait for others to recognise Ryan and John's right to have the same equality in that love, even more poignant. In this case, I think, less is more. The series showed the reality of the situation and that wait was heartbreaking in its unfairness and inequality.

The issues in this book specifically were those that face many couples, regardless of sexuality. The practicalities of arranging a wedding. The who, what, where and how. The minutiae - and I loved it because the minutiae meant that Ryan and John's rights were recognised by law as the same as everyone else's.

Kaje Harper is a go-to, must read author for me and this book is no exception. If you haven't already, you really need to check out this author's writing.

A copy of this book was given in exchange for an honest review.

Review: Dear Mona Lisa . . . by Claire Davis and Al Stewart

Tom, shy office clerk by day and drawer of foxes by night wakes up one Monday knowing the most extraordinary week of his life is about to begin. In five days time a lifelong ‘secret’ will be made gloriously public—but will it mean losing the person he loves most?

Getting married…

It seems like only yesterday Tom changed nappies and sang nursery rhymes to a laughing baby. He relishes the demands of being a daddy; especially teaching his little girl to draw and paint as she grows up. But the years tick by and times change. Long-buried secrets must come to the surface which may test even the strongest ties.

Tom and Lawrence…

He writes a list of all the things he has to do before the weekend and sticks it in the middle of his wall. The names and goals hang like threads of a spider’s web, inevitably leading to the centre, and all to the same place.

Dear Mona Lisa…

How to explain?

Each morning he notes the colours of dawn, listens to the birds and waits for the perfect moment. In one hand rests the balance of life and a terrible responsibility, in the other a wedding ring. Difficult days and the past loom, but his friends rally round and one by one the words come to life. Everyone waits as Tom finds the strength to open up and set free the secrets of his heart in a celebration of family, friendship and love.

A quirky story of modern life, set within the breathtaking landscape of Bradford.

You ever feel like you got hugged by a book? Isn’t it awesome?

I just got book hugged by Dear Mona Lisa. It was warm, colorful and full of sweet, sweet feels.

I have always loved the tales these authors put together, the stories tend to be on the quiet side which works so perfectly for their slightly quirky characters. The focus stays on their character driven stories instead of outside craziness. Their characters are so multi-dimensional I want all the focus on them because the story is in the nuances and I don’t want any distraction from a single one.

It’s refreshing to read a story about a couple of more mature MC’s who were an already established couple. That already adds an air of uniqueness to the story, put that together with Al and Claire’s distinctive characters and it’s a recipe for an unforgettable story.

Not very many authors can “show” a tale rather than “tell” it like these two. The first couple of pages read like you’ve been dropped into something that has already started, which makes sense considering the MC’s lives were built well before I showed up, but they always manage to bring it together quickly and organically so I get to be part of their lives right away.

Tom holds a wealth of anxiety and past traumas, he’s a shy man that deals with the crap life has put upon him through his art. He escapes and shares his wishes subtly through the foxes and woodland critters he finds comfort in. His daughter and his partner are his world and he has a great deal of support from his network of friends. Looking at the people around him, he is obviously a good and brave man, Tom doesn’t see that one bit however and it’s heartbreaking as well as understandable.

His partner Lawrence is pure perfection for Tom and I loved their moments together, they balance so well. Tom is an artist and sees the world through slightly different lenses. He feels colors viscerally and has a kindred spririt in his daughter who sees the world the same. He loves her more than anything and is so afraid of disappointing her with his “big news”. He puts it off and puts it off, and in the end, it was basically a non-issue. Considering the stressful buildup, you would think there should be more drama, but it made complete sense with how it turned out. Tom’s offspring would not respond any other way, she is too much like him and was raised surrounded by unconditional love, so it makes sense that she would love the same way in return.

Review: My Highland Cowboy by Alexa Milne

Duncan McLeish owns a ranch. Unlike most ranches, this one is in the Scottish Highlands. Having inherited a failing farm from his grandfather, he turns it into a successful business. He has friends, he loves his home, but he’s lonely, and not even infrequent trips to Glasgow and Edinburgh slake that thirst to find someone. Then Drew Sinclair walks into his life.

Drew Sinclair is tantalizingly close to getting his clothes brand noticed in the industry. He and his business partner, Joy, design individual dresses, while on the side, Drew designs and produces a line of men’s lingerie. He visits Scotland to design dresses for his sister, Jenna, who is marrying Duncan’s best friend at Christmas.

Duncan and Drew have nothing except their Highland upbringing in common, but they say opposites attract, and the attraction is immediate. Is this simply a summer fling, or can two men who live such opposite lives, miles away from each other, find a way to love?

Reader Advisory: This book contains references to homophobia and references to death of a character’s parents.

My Highland Cowboy had so many of my love buttons in it, I don’t even know where to start. I love opposites who attract, but also complement, cowboys, snark, Scotsman, Brits, kilts and a well-earned HEA. Drew, Duncan and I got it all in the Highlands.

Duncan has inherited a ranch that he was able to turn into a successful destination vacation spot. His story is impressive and I couldn’t help but respect the guy for all he’s gone through. It’s not over the top, but I could get how it made him such a determined character from the beginning. He’s pretty shy overall in social situations but he’s got that quiet strength that is something I absolutely LOVE in an MC. Drew shows up at the ranch to stay for a bit as Drew’s sister is marrying Duncan’s BFF. Duncan is a designer from London with a passion for his work and a plethora of charming attitude he’s more than happy to share with everyone.

Duncan finds Drew . . . unsettling. Duncan is fine with his quiet albeit lonely life. He’s never really felt a spark with anyone regardless of their gender and he’s been with both men and women in his past. They were there to scratch an itch though and nothing more. Drew is attracted to Duncan from the get go, because HELLO, he’s a hot, tall, dark and handsome cowboy. The two get to know one another amidst the wedding planning and Drew manages to push a whole mess of Duncan’s buttons.

This is where my favorite, and at the same time, least favorite things happened. Let me babble a bit here. Duncan has complete control over his life and is a successful businessman but his love life is non-existent. Drew has no trouble finding dates and getting himself a little something, but he’s very career driven at this point and his company is on the cusp of making it big. He’s got no time to be someone’s experiment, he’s worked way too hard to get where he is. Drew has the confidence that Duncan doesn’t have in the romance department and he’s not questioning who he is, at all. I kind of figured he’d be driving the bus on this one, but he didn’t. He turned out to be all practical and while he did pursue Duncan, he never pushed too hard and he never begged. I was so frustrated when he left the ranch. I already loved these dudes and I wanted them to be together! Like, right then!

That wasn’t a thing though and reading further on, I’m glad it wasn’t. Duncan had to own this, he had to be the pursuer. It really showed how much personal progress he made and it wasn’t just about Drew. Sure, Drew was the catalyst, but Duncan wanted this happiness too and he had to learn to be comfortable and confident in his own skin before he could attempt to make Drew happy.

So, it wasn’t an easy road to an HEA for these guys, but it wasn’t overly angsty either. Thankfully! The journey and the bit of back and forth made the HEA more believable and while it did evolve pretty quickly once the time came, the compromises were legit for their lifestyles and I was all kinds of happy for them.

Review: A Ballad of Confetti, Cake and Catastrophies by Helen Juliet

Nicholas Herald had one job to do for his big sister’s wedding. ONE. So of course, he forgets all about promising to book the harpist he knows for the elegant reception. With only a week to go, and his options running out fast, he resorts to asking a busker he finds performing on the city streets to step in and help save the day.

As it turns out though, this guy Fynn is pretty amazing with his guitar, and he has the most beautiful eyes – not that Nicholas is looking. But it becomes quickly apparent that finding a musician is the least of Nicholas’s problems. Between last minute cancellations, wayward family members, and a cat with a serious vendetta against happiness, he knows he’ll be lucky if they all make it to the big day intact.

He just doesn’t have time to fall in love, let alone with a boy However, like almost everything else in the week to come, he may not exactly have a choice…

A stand alone, New Adult romance with a happy ending.

D’awwwwww, this is really a sweet novel about first love, self-discovery and family. There’s a lot of story here with a good handful of arcs flowing through and it’s impressive how well the author balances all those nuances , giving them all their due while still staying focused on Nicholas.

And oh Nicholas, I really did like him so much. The book is described as NA, but it does land on the ‘beginner’ side of the NA spectrum. Nicholas is young but he’s mostly inexperienced. He’s just sweet and kinda dorky with a big empathetic heart. Which is what I found very charming about Nicholas, he doesn’t have a lot of awareness when it comes to himself, but he does notice subtleties in others. His interactions with other characters were always heartwarming. His openness and support of his future sibling in law was especially poignant.

So Nicholas cocked up the one thing he was supposed to do for his sister’s wedding. One job Nicholas. One job. He feels terrible that he forgot to book the harpist who was a sister of a friend, etc. etc. He can’t let his cousin, the maid of honor/planner/overachiever pain-in-the-ass find out or the wrath of maid-of-honorzilla will come down on his head. Bring on the meet cute! During his panic he notices a dreamy busker near the coffee shop where he has set up camp and it seems that his problems were solved. And they were and then some.

Fynn, the dreamy busker and he hit it off in a quietly flirty way. At this point, Nicholas is figuring his sexuality out and what better inspiration than a hot musician? The overall story is low angst and what is there is mostly in Nicholas’s head. There are times I wanted to throttle him and his self-doubt (in a naggy encouraging way of course), but it did read real for a young man finding his way. I mean, I can only speak on that a bit from having been a young person many moons ago, but in actuality, who am I to know what goes through a man’s head when he’s learning about his own sexuality? In that respect, this is definitely low angst and his struggles are more than legit.

Nicholas is also very romantic and some of his flowery speech and needy little bits spoke to that. The book is set during the planning of a wedding for crying out loud, it literally demands for situations to be romanticized. Nicholas and Fynn find excuses to spend more time together, grow closer and Fynn is a perfect match for Nicholas and his inexperience. He’s patient and supportive throughout, he finds Nicholas’s innocence adorable and while they were a somewhat unlikely couple, I didn’t doubt Flynn’s feelings for Nicholas.

My issues were few and one was purely me being selfish. For reals, what are the odds your first love, your first kiss, your first . . . everything are that perfect with that amazing of a person.

Realistic? Hardly.

But I like to think it’s a thing that can happen and good on Nicholas for it happening to him. Lucky bastard. It is a bit sugary overall but like I said, that’s keeping with the romantic theme, and if you’re in the mood for the sweet sauce, this is perfect book to satisfy your craving. It’s lengthy, but reads quickly. As I said in the beginning, there are a lot of arcs and sure, some of them could have been pared down but they l wouldn’t want any of them removed. They all added depth to this story that is more than just a coming of age romance. I loved all the family and the other romances going on, it‘s an all-encompassing charming love fest heavy on the sweet, low on the angst and next time I’m in the mood to get my NA/YA on, I’ll look for a Helen Juliet story.

Audiobook Review: Until You (At First Sight #3) by T.J. Klune

Together with their families and friends

Paul Auster

and

Vincent Taylor

request the honor of your company at the celebration of their marriage.

Listening Length: 5 hrs 4 mins
Narrator: Michael Lesley

Fair warning – this is basically just gonna be me gushing and what not for some paragraphs.

You know how sometimes real life is just all up in your business making you adult and it’s annoying and really utter BS? Nothing terrible is happening, but nothing awesome is happening either and you just get tired? I was having one of those times a couple of weeks ago. I have a quote from Dorothy Parker I like to remember in these not-really-so-trying-but-oh-so-very-tiring times, “It’s not the tragedies that kill us; it’s the messes.” It helps me to put the BS into perspective. I’ve added a new thing to keep my addled brain centered when I’m feeling extra precious and that is to grab me a fist full of Klune.

I nabbed the audiobook version of Until You as soon as it came through on the blog, I had already read it and couldn’t wait to hear T.J. Klune’s words come out of Michael Lesley’s mouth. That’s how I read it in my head anyway, so I was pretty stoked. I decided to revisit the whole crew and listened to Tell Me It’s Real again, I wanted the WHOLE Vince and Paul experience from start to, well, to start really; the wedding is just the beginning of happy for Paul and Vince. At the same time I was reading Destiny of Dragon’s and I lumbered like a drunk gorilla through real life deadlines by letting the lizard portion of my brain take over the muddling and I let the fun part of my brain loose at the Klune-a-palooza festival.

If you’ve read Tell Me It’s Real and The Queen and the Homo Jock King, you have to read and listen to Until You stat. I loved the manic wedding planning and of course all the banter. But what got me right in the heart throughout were the connections between Vince, Paul and all the extended family. It seems like everybody had their “moments” in amongst all the funny and that’s something the author always nails, a shot to the feels and poignant moments perfectly balanced in the middle of the entertaining chaos.

I fell in love with Vince in tell Me It’s Real, I mean, who didn’t? But in Until You, he raised the bar pretty high for significant others everywhere. His natural and almost accidental charm are just too good for your average person, but for Paul, he couldn’t be more perfect. The romance was ideal because it was sincere and still tinged with a healthy dose of snark. It’s the exact recipe for romance I want to hear and read. Michael Lesley does a perfect Vince, and I can picture Vince turning into Larry Auster as he ages. How adorable is that to imagine?

Thank you T.J. and Michael, you made my days better, you made me smile and you made me laugh when I needed it. With all the extreme . . . everything these days we tend to underestimate the simple things as we get tripped up in our messes and I’m trying hard to remember to enjoy the good stuff as I should.

T.J. and Michael, you are the good stuff.

Review: Unconditionally by Nell Iris

Flamboyant book café owner Luca Moretti and geeky doctor Gus Hansen have been together for six years when the Supreme Court ruling makes same-sex marriage legal in all states. On June 26, 2015, Gus gets down on one knee and Luca screams yes.

On their wedding day, shortly before the ceremony, Luca’s mother explodes in anger, calling him a freak. The reason? He’s wearing a white veil, sprinkled with crystals.

Their relationship has been strained for a long time, and her words trigger traumatic memories. Instead of walking down the aisle, Luca runs.

Away from his mother. Away from Gus.

Gus counts down the minutes when Luca’s mother comes knocking. He realizes something’s wrong, but when he goes to talk to Luca, his husband-to-be is nowhere to be found.

Can Gus find Luca in time and manage to convince him to come back and get married?

Hmmmm....

I didn't dislike this story, the three-heart rating is because it isn't everything I wanted it to be. I think I was hoping for something grittier, more emotionally challenging than the sweet romance with a bit of a bump I got.

And there I go wanting to make a disclosure (is that the right word? My brain is on the blink today) about the whole rating and opinions thing. I rate from my heart - it is truly a personal thing and not necessarily a reflection on the author. I read for enjoyment and that is an extremely personal preference. A book can be perfectly written editorial-wise, and it not grabbing me is no reflection on the author or their writing, more a reflection on me and my preferences.

I think this book will appeal to lots of people. Hell, if I'd been in a different kind of mood when I read it, it might have garnered a different rating from me. NONE OF THAT IS WITHIN THE AUTHOR'S CONTROL. I was wanting something grittier so for me this didn't measure up, I know it is a good book though, I know a lot of people will five-heart it. I know several readers probably want to slap me round the face with a wet kipper right about now - so I would say, read another review for this book (and stay away from the fish-mongers).
