Review: A Matter of Priorities by Jon Keys

After being disowned by his family, Cooper judged his self-worth by his latest hookup. But circumstances change as he learns about true love.

Cooper Diaz is a better-than-average college student with a major in architecture and a love of dogs. But while he plays the role of campus playboy, in reality, he believes no one would care enough to worry about him—except his best friend, Liam. His expectations are simple—searching for the latest hookup. His newest obsession is his professor, Lucas Nyman, who has asked Cooper to work as part of the team for an out-of-class project, which he eagerly accepts.

At a celebratory evening at Professor Nyman's home, Cooper is invited to fulfill his latest fantasy--a ménage à trois with the professor and his husband. But the fun turns into something much weightier when pillow talk turns into friendly advice from the pair whose bed Cooper has shared. After a close call that leaves Cooper shaken and a confession from Liam, Cooper begins to realize that life is not as he envisioned.

Reader Advisory: This book contains a ménage-à-trois scene.

For an erotic short, this was mostly sexy. I enjoyed the ‘celebratory evening’ with the professor a lot. It was hot and dirty, and definitely the fantasy I expected from the blurb.

I honestly didn’t really connect with the main character. Maybe because I’ve never been a college student? I don’t know about that life. While I have had my fair share of flings, and enjoyed my single life, I’m not sure I completely understand Cooper’s self destructive streak. Also, Cooper is a size queen, which I don't think is necessarily a bad thing, but because of his obsession with dick size he missed a lot of the emotional subtlety around him.

Cooper appears to be on the warpath when it comes to fucking anyone and everyone. We are told this anyway. He doesn’t seem to be particularly safe about it either, and this is where the drama in the story lies.

Suddenly he is confronted by feelings with his roommate/fuck buddy and it sort of evolved (devolved?) from there.

I don’t think the character development was quite deep enough for me. I would have loved Cooper if I had more of his honesty. I did enjoy the dog-shelter stuff and I thought that Cooper and Liam were great together. This wasn’t the smutty professor/student fantasy story I was expecting, so surprise!

It was still a sweet story, and I think if it hadn’t been going in two different directions, I would have enjoyed it a bit more.

For a sexy short, this is definitely worthy. And if you’re into reading menagé erotica then this will definitely get you flushing.

Review: Truly, Madly, Boys (Mad About the Brit Boys, Book 5) by JL Merrow and Josephine Myles

Love—the most intense connection.

The challenge of finding love in the world today can take many forms, but at its heart love is the same: it’s all about forging a connection with another person. Experience romance at its most relatable in these four contemporary stories of male-male love with a British flavour from award-winning authors Josephine Myles and JL Merrow.

In these stories you’ll find out how to communicate without words, be teased by a memory that’s just out of reach, flash back to young love and emerging sexuality, and discover how opposites can attract when you meet a stranger in a strange land.

These stories have all been previously published, but are now available exclusively in this anthology.

This is such a delicious collection of sweet, short and dirty connections and reconnections between men who are lucky enough to find love and I was lucky enough to pick up this anthology when it came through the clubhouse. Short stories aren’t easy to get invested in, but these four are perfect examples of short stories done right. They are all just enough without being too much and they left me completely satisfied but still wanting more. More because I read about eight characters that I had a lot of feelz for in just a few pages and considering I’ve read a few recently that gave me very little in a couple of hundred pages, I was thirsty for some meat on my men and these two authors delivered.

Epiphany by JL Merrow

Anyone who is a fan of JL Merrow’s Muscling Through (and that’s pretty much everyone) will love Epiphany. It’s similar in that’s it told in first person POV from the less cultured of the two MC’s. Vinnie is the quintessential New Yorker who tells things like he sees them and when he spots Graham, a Brit who is lost his way in the Big Apple, he’s instantly smitten. I loved reading his totally honest view of Graham especially when it was more rough around the edges. It’s a completely charming little tale and I loved it.

Halfway up the Stairs by Josephine Myles

Halfway up the Stairs is such a well told established couple story. The balance between the current and the flashback are perfect. Some readers are not big fans of the established couple theme, and I get that, reading the discovery of a new romance is a beautiful escape. But, the flashback to when Charlie and Josh get together along with Charlie’s coming out will satisfy any romance reader and then some. It’s sweet and it’s hot and it’s perfect. The author managed to deliver a new romance, some established couple angst (that most people can relate to) and an HEA in just a few pages.

Sense Memory by JL Merrow

Colin lost his sight a year ago and while he’s completely independent, he is lonely and is giving the online dating thing a try. He meets up with Alban at a coffee shop and the two of them hit it off. The author did a great job of showing a connection between the two. The twist at the end gave the story a unique flavor and there was a good subtle build up that made it work seamlessly with the meeting between Colin and Alban. It’s not easy to pull off the idea of an HEA in such a short story but I would but it for this one easily.

Without Words by Josephine Myles

Without Words is short and sweet perfection. Josephine Myles is amazing at giving a lot of character depth with so few words and this story is a great example. Lots of showing made extra telling unnecessary which fit even better for the story of Nick and Sean. It’s one of those stories that I read and then felt the neeeeeed for more because of how much I got invested so quickly, but at the same time, nothing was left unresolved or unsatisfying. I just loved it so hard that I wanted more.

Review: Bunkhouse Boys by Marie Piper

Kenny and Blue, two hands at the Tate Ranch, find distraction in each other from sleepless nights and days filled with hard work. Keeping their relationship a secret might be essential, but with their growing need for each other, it sure won’t be easy.

I love stories about cowboys and I love historical settings, put the two together and I am one happy Peach. I was excited about reading this one and while I did like the writing and what was here, in the end there really wasn’t much here overall. What I read of the characters I liked, but there wasn’t enough foundation for me to get invested in their story.

The setting is promising with a group of ranch hands sharing sleeping space in the ranch bunkhouse. Kenny has trouble sleeping and always is awake when Blue stumbles in after spending too much time drinking. One night Blue is in the midst of rubbing one out when he catches Kenny watching him. One thing leads to another and there is boning outside the bunkhouse.

The scene was definitely steamy, but after that life on the ranch continued. The two had a tryst in the barn and that led to a really hot scene in the bunkhouse full of sleeping men. The possibility of getting caught upped the heat level and was very much a pleasure to read. But that was about it, there wasn’t a story to pull the characters together and I missed that connection.

For a quick and hot cowboy read, Bunkhouse Boys is good stuff but you aren’t going to get a fully fleshed out story.

Kenny had always been a terrible sleeper. He’d never been one to just lie down and close his eyes and dream. Always, he’d be the one still up hours after everyone else. He became real familiar with the ceilings of the places he slept, from the sod house of his childhood to the different bunkhouses at the ranches and farms he’d worked at as he grew to a man. He came to know lots of holes in the boards that made walls, and the stitching of the blankets that warmed him. Even at twenty-five years old and employed at the Tate ranch where the boss ran his boys hard from sunup to sundown, Kenny could never simply just go to sleep.
Of course, he was wide awake and pulling at the loose string of a missing button on his long underwear the night Blue snuck back into the bunkhouse. Everyone else had drifted off hours ago, and as Blue made his way through the dark room, his long tan duster caught the moonlight and made him look like a ghost. Blue took off his coat and lay back on his bunk, which was next to Kenny’s. The wood of the bedframe creaked under his weight. Blue was big man, tall and broad-shouldered, and he filled every inch of his bed from top to bottom. He dropped his boots off the bed, rustled a bit, and his pants followed after his boots.
Unseen, Kenny rolled his eyes in the dark.
All the boys drank at the saloon a few miles away more often than they should, but Blue was the most relentless about it. Every night after supper, unless he was on duty, Blue would take off to town and not come back until his words were slurred and the reek of booze came from him. He’d stomp through the room noisily and wake half the boys before he even got to his bunk.
For a moment, the room was silent save for the sounds of snores and mumbles and farts, same as any room full of sleeping men. Kenny let go of his string and started counting the planks on the bunk above his head. Duncan snored loudly up there. Not many of the other fellows liked him, on account of his being a loud-mouthed brute who always seemed to be ready to pick on those younger, smaller, or different than he liked.
A quiet sound caught Kenny’s attention, the sound of an arm against a blanket. It was coming from Blue’s bunk. Kenny could tell even in the darkness what he was doing. The motion, the rhythm—Blue was yanking at himself. In a room full of men, this was not unusual. Still, Kenny turned his head toward Blue’s bunk. In a peek from the moonlight, he could see Blue’s blanket moving on his lap.
“You like watchin’ me?” Blue whispered.

Review: There's Something About a Kilt by Schuyler L'Roux

It’s a hellaciously hot day in Minneapolis and all Thom wants to do is enjoy his ice cream and forget about the stacks of essays waiting for him back in his stifling apartment. Until he meets Gerry, a kilted, tattooed Welshman. The conversation is smooth and the attraction immediate, but Gerry is only in town for the night and isn’t down for anything quick and forgettable. When they meet again, hours later, Gerry knows there’s something in the air and all bets are off. Including his kilt.

Well, there certainly is something about a kilt. Because, damn. Look at that cover!

Thom is enjoying his ice cream, minding his own business when he spots a hottie with a kilt, Gerry, walking by. They talk, they flirt, Thom invites him out later, but Gerry declines. He's leaving and doesn't want only a one night stand.

But Gerry shows up anyway, testing fate to see if him and Thom would be brought together one more time. When they do meet a second time, well... Gerry doesn't believe in chance. He thinks he and Thom can have something more, even if he's leaving soon. Then all hot shenanigans ensue.

There's Something About a Kilt is a sexy good time. It's mostly erotic, with a little but of plot. But I really liked the little bit of plot there was. Especially Gerry. I liked his view on fate. If him and Thom were brought together twice, he wasn't going to fight it. Maybe they could be more? Worth a shot.

There isn't an HEA and barely even a HFN. But with short stories like this, I'm OK with that. I don't want something unbelievable and wrapped up with a perfect bow. They met, had fun... now let's see where it goes.
“'Not the end?'
'Not even close.'"
Hopefully, there's more of these two. While I was happy with the ending, I would definitely love to see where it goes from here.

Review: Toy With Me by Annabelle Jacobs

Aaron is hiding something in his drawers—but that’s not his only secret.

When he moves in with his new housemates, Aaron intends to tell them about his sexuality from the outset. But a large pink item of a personal nature, given as a joke, scuppers his plans and he misses his chance.

Fellow housemate Rob is out and proud. He guesses Aaron is gay, and when he finds Aaron’s other secret concealed in his sock drawer, he takes it upon himself to help Aaron out with a little sexual experimentation.

What do you need to know about this book? Let's summarise:
  1. University guys
  2. Huge pink dildo
  3. Fun times (including first time toy play...)
  4. .....actually, nope that's all you really need to know. I suppose I could tell you that it's a thoroughly enjoyable read, written in Annabelle Jacobs wittily romantic way. Or that, even though it's <10k it is still a proper story and not just PWP. Or that it's one of the sexy secrets quartet. But, truly, you don't need to know that stuff. Points 1-3 cover it quite enough.
