Book Description

Bad Boyfriend, Inc—When you can’t find a good boyfriend, why not hire a bad one instead?

Liam Connelly is a university student in Sydney. He leads an orderly and predictable life of studying, working as a waiter in an upscale harbour restaurant and spending lots of time with his cat, trying to convince himself that after his last cheating boyfriend, he’s perfectly happy alone. Well, mostly happy.

Ambrose Newman is a Bad Boyfriend. Professionally. Someone’s parents don’t approve of that long-haired unemployed bass player they want to date? Well, that’s where Ambrose comes in. For a few hundred dollars a night, he’ll go to dinner with them and their parents and show them that the grass is definitely not greener on his side of the fence. It’s dead. When Ambrose brings a date to Liam’s restaurant, it’s not sparks that fly—it’s glassware.

When Liam needs a date to prove to his visiting parents that he’s not destined to die sad and alone, he calls Ambrose, desperate. If Ambrose can be a bad boyfriend for money, he can be a tolerable one too, right? Which works out great—right up until Ambrose is too nice, and Liam’s parents invite them up to their winery for the long weekend.

Suddenly Ambrose has to be a Bad Boyfriend again, to give Liam an excuse to ‘break up’ with him before his mum starts planning the wedding. But as Liam gets to know the real Ambrose, real feelings start to sneak into the fake relationship on both sides. Under the watchful eyes of Liam’s protective family, who have no idea what to make of Ambrose, their fake relationship evolves into a chance at something real.

When Ambrose has an ugly run-in with Liam’s sister’s fiancé—who’s an even worse boyfriend than him—it might cost him not only any chance he had of convincing Liam’s family that he’s not the nightmare they think he is, but his fledgling relationship with Liam, too.

Reader advisory: This book contains mention of physical abuse and a racist comment.

Excerpt

The voice was loud and obnoxious, at odds with the restaurant’s muted soundtrack of clinking cutlery, soft jazz and murmured conversation.

“Really appreciate you paying for dinner, Tom. I’m between opportunities right now but I’ll be damned if I’m gonna take just any job and be a corporate drone. Better to take a free meal when I can get one, right?”

It was followed by a braying laugh that made Liam wince and want to drag his nails down a blackboard, because that would have been preferable to listening to this honking, snorting nightmare.

Liam prayed he wouldn’t have to wait on whoever the loud idiot was, but judging by the smirk on his co-worker Judy’s face, he had a sudden sinking certainty that the table was his. Sure enough, when he glanced over to check, there was Braying Man in the middle of his section—elbows on the table, wearing a backwards baseball cap and a flannel shirt, picking at his teeth.

The idiot caught Liam’s eye and snapped his fingers. “Hey, man, can we get a bread basket or something? And booze. Lots of booze. Her old man’s paying, so make it the good stuff.” He winked, then gave Liam honest-to-God finger guns.

The guy was an utter dickhead, Liam decided. Still, part of the job was keeping his opinions to himself, so Liam made his way over to the table, face carefully impassive. His mask slipped for a split second when he recognized the girl who was gazing at Dickhead with something like worship. It was Kelly, who he shared a Marketing Communications class with at the University of Sydney, and the last time Liam had talked to her, she’d been dating someone completely different—a nice, if slightly scruffy, guitarist in a pub band. He wondered what had happened to him.

The other couple at the table had to be Kelly’s parents. They were looking at the guy with a slightly confused expression on their faces, like he was one of those hairless cats, and they couldn’t decide if they were fascinated or horrified by his existence.

Liam had to admit, Dickhead was objectively attractive when he was keeping his mouth shut. He could have been a model, with his well-muscled physique, dark hair and carefully sculpted stubble. He had a strong, straight nose, killer jawline, and even white teeth. He was just Liam’s type—or would have been, if Liam dated.

Liam cleared his throat and did his best to pretend he didn’t know anyone at the table as he said, “Welcome to Bayside. Would you like to order some drinks?”

Dickhead rolled his eyes. “Wow. I guess you weren’t listening, huh? I mean, I literally just asked you to bring us good booze.”

Liam kept his face pleasantly neutral—he’d had plenty of practice, working as a waiter in a high-end Sydney restaurant—and clarified, “What, specifically, would you like to drink, sir?” He made sure to address Kelly’s father, since he was obviously the one footing the bill.

The man smiled gratefully and started to say, “I’d like a gin and tonic, and my wife will have—”

Arsehole interrupted. “Just give me a bottle of that Don Paragraph stuff”—as someone from a family of winemakers, Liam died a tiny death at the mangled pronunciation—“and the quicker the better, yeah?”

“I’ll check if we have any Dom Perignon in stock, sir. How many glasses with that?” Liam asked through clenched teeth. God, he hoped they weren’t celebrating Kelly’s engagement to this douchebag.

Dude wrinkled his nose. “Just one. It’s for me.” He turned to Kelly and winked. “Gotta watch for extra calories in drinks if you wanna stay in shape, am I right, sweet pea?”

Liam waited for Kelly to rip the guy’s balls off—he hoped literally, but he’d settle for metaphorically—because he knew she had a hell of a temper when she was wronged. He’d been on the receiving end of it during one disastrous group assignment. But Kelly just smiled like a Stepford Wife and murmured, “Yes, Ambrose.”

Liam was pretty sure the shock on her father’s face was mirrored on his own, but he schooled his features and nodded. Ambrose tilted a menu at Kelly’s father. “This seafood platter’s meant to be for two, but you’re cool with me ordering it, right, Tom?”

Kelly’s father cleared his throat. “Kelly’s allergic to seafood.”

“That’s cool, I wasn’t planning on sharing anyway,” the dickhead—Ambrose—said with an easy grin that lit up his entire face and really, it wasn’t fair that someone who was such a colossal arsehole could be so attractive. But of course, that was how the world worked, right? Beautiful people got away with murder.

Liam turned back to the older man. “And the rest of your drinks order, sir?” he asked, taking petty satisfaction at the way Ambrose snorted and muttered under his breath.

“A gin and tonic for myself, and a glass of Connelly Cellars’ Perfect Pinot,” Tom said, and Liam suppressed the urge to preen, just like he did every time someone ordered one of his family’s wines.

“Make mine a tonic water,” Kelly said.

Liam blinked. Wow, what happened to the girl who always claimed she’d never drink water because fish fucked in it?

Something weird was going on, and whatever it was, Liam didn’t like it. He especially didn’t like that it was happening here at Bayside. People didn’t come into Bayside wearing backwards caps and being dicks. Bayside had standards—standards that Liam was beginning to worry he might have to attempt to enforce. It had water views! You could see the Sydney Harbour Bridge from the wide dining room windows! It was both fancy and trendy, and it always made the list of the top ten places to eat in Sydney. Diners weren’t supposed to wear flannel to Bayside, and Liam panicked quietly that he didn’t know if the dress code was actually enforceable or not. Liam had only been working here for eight months, but it had never come up before. People usually treated Bayside like it was a special occasion, not three a.m. at the counter of Macca’s.

“Good choice, babe. You know you’re a sloppy drunk,” Ambrose said, leaning in and patting Kelly’s face. Then he hauled himself out of his chair, scratched his belly and farted. “I gotta go take a dump. I always shit when I’m out. Make someone else deal with that, am I right?” And with that Ambrose sauntered towards the bathrooms, leaving Kelly’s parents staring after him open-mouthed.

Liam couldn’t help himself. “Kelly—”

“Hi, Liam, I guess you’ve met my new boyfriend now!” Kelly cut in, following that with a tinkling laugh that was pitched a little high with nerves. “He’s an entrepreneur.”

Liam opened his mouth to ask what happened to Greg the bassist, but Kelly shot him a glare that said she would hunt him down and personally set his dick on fire if he said another word. Liam knew that look, so he shut his mouth, went to fetch drinks and said a prayer that he wouldn’t have to be the one to clean the toilets at the end of the night. Frankly, he wouldn’t have been surprised to learn that Ambrose had just decided to take a shit on the floor and stolen all the paper.

When Ambrose wandered back out again at last, he didn’t walk straight back to his own table. Instead, he approached another table where a group of shiny and fashionable young women who were probably Instagram influencers or something were eating.

“Hi, ladies,” he said. He put both hands on their table and leaned forward. “My name’s Ambrose.”

“Is he—?” Kelly’s mother’s mouth dropped open. “Oh my God.”

“Ambrose is very sociable,” Kelly said. “People love him.”

A ticking vein in her father’s temple called her a liar.

Liam saw the way that Tom started to strangle his linen napkin, and hurried over to the influencers’ table. “Excuse me, sir,” he said to Ambrose. “Can you please return to your own table?”

Ambrose gave him finger guns, and sauntered back over to join Kelly and her parents.

What the everlasting fuck? And Liam obviously wasn’t the only one thinking it. Kelly’s mum looked close to tears, and her dad looked half a heartbeat away from either a stroke or a homicide. In the event he actually did murder Ambrose, Liam decided to tell the police it was justified. Hell, at this point he’d probably give the guy an alibi. And the murder weapon. And a bucket of bleach to clean up the murder scene.

Kelly, though, just beamed at Ambrose like she was under some sort of spell. “I missed you, boo.” She blew him a kiss.

Ambrose shrugged. “Have we ordered yet? I’m starving. Service here is soooo slow,” he said loudly, stretching his arms over his head and attracting stares from the other tables. “Probably can’t get decent staff.”

Liam seethed and wondered if he and Tom could come to some sort of agreement regarding mutual alibis and body disposal. The walk-in freezer out the back would be a good place to store a corpse while they figured out their next step.

Liam woodenly went through the specials, which nobody ever ordered anyway, then took their menus back and excused himself. He’d only made it a few steps away from the table when the obnoxious click of someone’s fingers pulled him back again.

“Garçon!”

Ambrose. Of-fucking-course.

“Hey, change Kelly’s order to a garden salad,” Ambrose said. He grinned at Kelly. “We don’t want you getting too chunky, right, babe?”

That vein in Tom’s temple looked about ready to pop. “Kelly can eat what she bloody well likes,” he hissed in an undertone.

“A salad sounds great, actually,” Kelly said. “Ambrose knows what’s best. Babe, tell them about your business ideas.”

Ambrose straightened up, his eyes gleaming. “Have you guys heard of multi-level marketing?”

This time it was Liam’s jaw that dropped. Kelly was a business major.

“So,” Ambrose said to Kelly’s stone-faced parents, “what you do is, you have a product, and you recruit people to sell it for you. They’re called a downline. Like, some people say that it’s predatory and cult-like, but I’ve been in a cult, and ha! You won’t fool me like that twice! Well, three times. Did you bring your chequebook, Tom? I mean, I can take cash if you want to get on board too, I guess. Like, what do you think? Five grand?”

Liam stared at Kelly for a moment, wondering who the fuck she even was, then escaped to the kitchen to put in their orders before he finally snapped. He managed to resist the urge to tell the chef to spit on the seafood, but it was a close-run thing.

Audiobook Review: Heat for Sale (Heat for Sale #1) by Blake Moreno

Heat can be sold but love is earned.

In a world where omegas sell their heats for profit, Adrien is a university student in need of funding. With no family to fall back on, he reluctantly allows the university's matcher to offer his virgin heat for auction online. Anxious, but aware this is the reality of life for all omegas, Adrien hopes whoever wins his heat will be kind.

Heath—a wealthy, older alpha—is rocked by the young man's resemblance to his dead lover, Nathan. When Heath discovers Adrien is Nathan’s lost son from his first heat years before they met, he becomes obsessed with the idea of reclaiming a piece of Nathan.

Heath buys Adrien’s heat with only one motivation: to impregnate Adrien, claim the child, and move on. But their undeniable passion shocks him. Adrien doesn't know what to make of the handsome, mysterious stranger he's pledged his body to, but he’s soon swept away in the heat of the moment and surrenders to Heath entirely.

Once Adrien is pregnant, Heath secrets him away to his immense and secluded home. As the birth draws near, Heath grows to love Adrien for the man he is, not just for his connection to Nathan. Unaware of Heath's past with his omega parent and coming to depend on him heart and soul, Adrien begins to fall as well.

But as their love blossoms, Nathan's shadow looms. Can Heath keep his new love and the child they've made together once Adrien discovers his secrets?

This was a solid omegaverse read.

In Heat for Sale, young omega Adrien is in a society where breeding/heats for profit is not frowned on. Omegas selling their heats to the highest bidder or having babies to secure future generations is key in this society. Women don't exist here. Omegas are revered for breeding. Virgin Adrien is a quiet omega college student in need of cash for school. He sells his heat and the highest bidder, older wealthy alpha Heath has an unknown obsession with Adrien. Plus, tie in Adrien's link to Heath's dead lover, it makes for an interesting plot.

There is something about the way Blake (Moreno) writes A/B/O that works for me. I've read the Heat of Love series, while both have similar bones in their omegaverses, Heat for Sale is more erotic, slightly darker. The D/s structure was a nice addition to story. The first time Heath gave Adrien an order, it was nice to read Adrien's submissive response. Heath was commanding in the bedroom, but wasn't authoritative 24/7. Adrien was submissive in nature but I didn't find him to be a doormat.

I bought the audiobook to read along with the story, so it was my first time listening to narrator Michael Dean. I'm pretty picky with narrators, and I'm unsure if I'd listen to more Dean narrations. We'll see. But I enjoyed him reading Heat for Sale. What grabbed me the most when listening is when the narrator would get on a roll and not take a breath when booming through a sex scene...it was like he was preaching porn. It made me giggle a bit, I can't lie. Dean was there narrating and getting into the characters and boom! Something erotic started and it was like there was a porn pulpit and he was there to preach. He seemed to have a blast. The voices were pretty great for the main characters.

If you like ABO and D/s (without the excessive fluff as some omegaverses tend to lean), I'd say check out Heat for Sale audio or book, either version works.

I see this is considered first of a series. If this actually comes to fruition, consider me there for future reads. I wouldn't mind revisiting this world.

It's a mysteriously charmed life for orphan Sebastien Harris, but it's still a shock to be offered a full ride to attend grad school at the obscure but prestigious Bosch University in upstate New York. Trouble starts as he attempts to reach the campus for his interview: first the train is cancelled, then a swarm of migratory air mattresses block the streets. When he finally arrives, he's too exhausted to question why a remarkably handsome man named Gem is waiting for him, nor does he have time. A demon horde demolishes the university, and the pair run for their lives—at which point Sebastien realizes Gem is not, strictly speaking, human. Their adventure exposes Sebastien's heritage...and reveals the prophecy he is destined to fulfill. Gem is infernal, a human-demon hybrid, and meant to be Sebastien's servitor, a magical well from which Sebastien, a warlock by birth, will draw the power to remake the world. If he survives.

Excerpt

“You’re late.” The tall man’s tone was so nonchalant it bordered on melodic, carrying the cadence of a world-weary sigh. “That is, you’re late if you’re Sebastien Harris.” He paused, eyeing Sebastien from his lofty vantage. His aquiline features formed an exceedingly dubious expression. “Are you Sebastien Harris? The gates opened for you, so I’m making an assumption here, but honestly.”

He pulled languidly at his pipe and made no comment about the cacophonic blue jays or the Hello Kitty helmet.

Sebastien wanted to reply, but he was still having a hard time breathing. Instead, he pulled off the helmet and let it roll away as he stared up at the man and nodded.

With the visor out of the way, Sebastien could admire the stranger properly. Even breathless and flat on his ass, Sebastien had to admit he was interested.

The tall man flowed smoothly into a crouch beside Sebastien, his long legs moving like well-oiled hinges, too graceful by far. His monochromatic ensemble was shades of gray, black, and white from dark curled hair down to his pointy-toed, iridescent black boots. It wasn’t exactly cool out—although it seemed far crisper here than it had on the road—but the man wore what looked like five or six layers on top, most of them silk or velvet or some other expensive material.

Sebastien had met lots of fashionable boys living in New York City, but this man seemed like another species entirely.

“Sebastien,” the man repeated with a little more enthusiasm this time, holding Sebastien’s gaze in a way that suggested he’d caught him looking. “You’re very late. Get your shit together, fresh meat.”

He smiled just a little, but it transformed his striking countenance into one far more accommodating, though still edged with intriguing cruelty.

After another puff from his pipe, the stranger passed it to his off hand and extended the other to shake.

“You can call me Gem, if you please,” he rasped as he exhaled richly scented pipe smoke to one side.

Sebastien took Gem’s hand and shook it even as Gem helped him to his feet. Sebastien’s legs trembled as he rose; the day’s activities were really catching up with him.

“I was delayed!” Sebastien shouted it, gesturing at the shrieking party of blue jays swarming around the gazebo. “I mean, I knew the birds were bad in the city, but I had no idea how intense they got this far out. How does anyone get here on time?”

This was, of course, leaving out the frolicking flock of mattresses and the subway being shut down, both of which were… Well, he had planned for the subway to possibly fail.

But it was his first mattress migration.

“Are you talking about the birds?” Gem looked momentarily puzzled as he gestured with his pipe toward the flock. “I’m uncertain how to break this news to you, Sebastien, but… Those are your birds. They’re here for you. They are not Bosch birds.”

He smiled, just a little, and this time it was distinctly unsettling. “You’ll know it when you see Bosch birds.”

“I don’t have birds. I was thinking about getting a cat, but—”

Fuck. Why was Sebastien bringing that up?

He was late, probably a mess, and there were angry birds.

Sebastien tried to smooth hair that had mostly parted ways with the little bun on the back of his head. Some stuck to his face, and he brushed it away as he looked down at what had once been a tidy, if imperfect, tie. The dress shirt was all but soaked through with sweat under the knit sweater he’d thought made him look quite smart. Now it just made him feel… damp.

Wincing as he peeled the sweaty fabric away from his skin, Sebastien mulled over the Bosch birds. That notion rang a bell, but he couldn’t quite place it. He couldn’t fucking think. The noise was inhuman.

“If they’re my birds, I’d really appreciate it if they shut up,” Sebastien muttered off-hand.

The shrieking stopped, leaving behind portentous silence.

He stared at Gem. Gem stared at him. Sebastien opened his mouth, thought, closed it again, and then blurted, “Um. That was weird.”

Weird being a relative term.

Then the ground began to shake.

Guest Review: The Butcher of Oxford (The Jake Weston Mysteries #2) by Marko Realmonte

Timothy Ashlock risks everything to travel back in time and save his true love, Jake Weston-- but almost immediately someone is murdering the musicians in the Oxford Student Orchestra.

Who is the Butcher of Oxford?

DCI Carl Bridges thinks the couple may be involved in the crimes.

Can the boys uncover the Butcher before they end up in jail, or worse?

This thriller has twists and turns that will keep the reader guessing until the final surprising outcome. It presents a whole new take on time travel and an unapologetic look at modern LGBTQ relationships in college.

Reviewer: Annery

I guess I’ll start by some housekeeping first:

  • You really should read Murder at White Oak first
  • I’m not sure that this is a romance proper or a murder mystery in the traditional sense
  • I’m not the target audience for this

The ending of the first book left a giant question as to how the series would proceed given where we left the title character. The author’s solution is one I didn’t expect and one that seems like it will be a recurring device in the series. Nothing about this series has been what I expected and I’m not sure how I feel about it.

Book 2 picks up about a year and a half later and Timothy, now a student at Oxford, is missing Jake fiercely. A murder happens and, as we’ve come to expect, the same oafish DCIs make an appearance and that’s as much of a traditional murder mystery as we get. The rest is a bit of a dive into esoteric matters relating to time travel and “infinitely diverging timelines”, which results in Jake coming back and it’s not a moment too soon. His irreverent voice it the best part of this series. The murders of course continue but their resolution is almost sidenote to Jake & Tim’s pursuit of a life of bliss.

This book has all the strengths and faults of the prior installment though the writing is cleaner, more cinematic, and perhaps sharper. The under 20 protagonists continue to sound like characters in a poor man’s Noel Coward play, the so called adults are bumbling fools out of the better teen movies and, going by vocabulary, Jake somehow became completely British. Very little of what transpires is rooted in reality and, perhaps in an effort at inclusivity on ALL FRONTS, the book feels a bit overstuffed with characters who, IMO, don’t bring much to the story itself but a nod, but not much dwelling, at representation. However I did resolve to accept the story on its own terms, where its not so much a romance or a murder mystery but more like the adventures of two boys, perfect specimens of course, through time and space. I don’t know if it will hold true on any day of the week but despite everything I was charmed, mostly because I can imagine some gay teen somewhere reading this and seeing there’s a whole world open for them. That’s not a small thing.

Blog Tour: His Fairy Prince (Tit for Tat #2) by J.S. Harker

Welcome author JS Harker who's here with an excerpt of her new paranormal romance. Find out more about her latest Dreamspun Beyond title & second in the Tit for Tat series, His Fairy Prince, right here!

Excerpt:

An escape room inside a secret passage. Someone in the control room could be waiting to see if Greg was willing to make a fool of himself and repeat a bunch of random sounds. There was no reason not to try. If it didn’t work, then Greg could rejoin his friends and rant with them about how awful the whole night was. If it did work, he might have even more to talk about with Alaric.

Greg ran his finger along the words as he sounded them out carefully. “Droll ter-a-chik saaliss sserra-phnull.

Then he tried the door. It was still locked, but the handle wiggled a little.

Greg bit the corner of his lip and checked over his shoulder. No one to judge him except whomever had control over the door, and he really wanted to see the Dullahan room. He could picture the corn field and full moon in the photo. He repeated the phrase quicker the second time.

Drollter-a-chiksaaliss sserra-phnull.”

A moonlight-silver glow lit the door’s outline. A definitive click resounded loud enough that Greg felt it pop inside him. The door handle moved under his hand, and the door swung out without needing a push. He stepped through, but the orange lights stayed behind.

Fields of dried cornstalks formed the border of a wide dirt path. They rustled as if a wind blew through them, which was an incredible effect considering Greg couldn’t hear a fan. The same wind brushed around him, ruffling his hair, and it was chilly. Alaric and his team must have rigged up some kind of draft through the basement.

On the far wall—which looked like it was miles away—the full moon sat in the night sky. Thin smoky clouds drifted across. It had to be a trick of lighting and painting, but between the moon and the wind, Greg was convinced he was outside.

Only Halloween Escapes was surrounded by blacktop and buildings. The nearest field was outside of town, and the strip mall housing the business was close to dead center. Dragging in this much dirt seemed excessive. The room didn’t make sense.

The door slammed shut. Greg jumped and spun toward it.

There was no door.

Panic tightened Greg’s throat and threatened to a full takeover, but—hold on. The trick was an obvious one. Greg slapped his forehead. The door was painted to blend in with the wall so guests wouldn’t see it and take the easy way out. The staff needed some way to get back and forth. All he had to do was find the right place or switch, and it would pop open.

He put out his hand to touch the wall and feel for the crease.

Nothing. His hand moved through the space as if it was air because... it was air. He took a step forward, and another, but still nothing.

“What the hell?” he said. His voice sounded oddly quiet, like someone had turned the volume way down.

He must have turned around. Determined to find the wall, he went over the last few steps with his hands out. Counting his steps, he went six paces. Still nothing. He walked back the other way, making sure he went nine steps.

No door. No wall, even. He knew he’d kept his feet on the path, but he held one hand out into the cornstalks anyway. His fingers found nothing solid except cornstalks. Very real, very dry cornstalks. His heart thudded in his ears.

Wait, that sound was external, not internal. It wasn’t his heart but hoofbeats. Greg stopped and turned toward the sound. Out among the shadows of the cornstalks, farther down the path, a rider on an ebony horse rode at a decent trot. He had a sword in one hand and a prop head in the other.

“Oh, thank fuck,” Greg muttered. He raised his voice and waved at the man. “Hey! Could you let me out?”

The horseman pushed his mount into a canter and rolled his wrist to flash his sword.

Of course getting out of the room wouldn’t be as simple as walking in. The room was named after the folklore monster. The guy playing the part was dedicated to his job, and he wasn’t going to stop and open the door for someone he thought was a guest. That would defeat the whole purpose of an escape room.

Greg could play along. He cleared his throat and called out, “Good sir, I’m not supposed to be here. If you could give me the solution to this maze, I’d be grateful.”

The horseman let out a wild cackle, and his horse took off at a gallop. He showed no signs of slowing down. If Greg stayed on the path, he’d get run down. He wanted to call the rider’s bluff and make him back down, but the horse was charging, the guy was swinging his sword, and the cackling made Greg’s hair stand on end. At the last second, he dove for the field, landing flat on his stomach and well out of the rider’s way.

The horseman went on another twenty feet, slowed his horse, and turned around.

Blurb:
A trick of fairy magic becomes a romantic treat.

Halloween is fantasy-loving college senior Greg’s favorite holiday, and he’s thrilled to explore a spooky puzzle—even if his friends prefer slashers over witchcraft. Luckily the gorgeous and otherworldly Alaric wants to sneak time alone with him. Unluckily Greg’s sworn off hookups. Still reeling from an intoxicating kiss, Greg opens a secret door…

…and steps through a portal to the enchanted realm Alaric is destined to rule.

Stranded with the alluring Greg, Alaric sets off across his kingdom with the man who might be the consort he’s always wanted. It won’t be easy—Alaric’s ex, the Lord of Spiders, wants to reunite with Alaric—but if Greg and Alaric succeed, they’ll find what they’ve always wanted: a place to belong.

We were still chatting after dinner, so we took our pudding into the living room, while Christian sang Monika’s praises and practically danced on the spot about being allowed pudding during the week. He’d always had a phenomenal sweet tooth, and I guessed that being a professional player was seriously at odds with his desire for sugar.

“Do you want to watch a film?” Christian asked as he flopped onto the sofa, carefully holding his bowl of lemon tart while searching for the remote.

“Sure,” I said, settling next to him and taking in the details of the room. It was light and airy, with large French doors at one end that I assumed opened up onto the garden, although it was too dark to see. The room was lit with the soft glow of lamps, which gave it a warm feel despite its size. The two sofas were scattered with a large selection of colourful cushions and throws, and in one corner a large television stood on a wooden stand. There was a unit beside it filled with Blu-rays and games as well as random knick-knacks and photos, and I was sure I could see a scattering of trophies in amongst them. I was dying to be nosey, but I also knew that wasn’t polite.

“What do you fancy? I’ve got Netflix and Amazon Prime,” Christian said. He gestured at the unit.

“Or there’s lots of Blu-rays up there. Take your pick.”

“I’ll have a look,” I answered, seizing my chance to satisfy my curiosity. I placed my bowl on the solid coffee table and meandered, over but before I could look at any of the photos, something on the floor behind the coffee table caught my eye.

It was a giant LEGO set, half assembled and spread across the carpet, the carefully numbered bags laid out neatly next to the large instruction manual.

“Holy fuck, is that the Millennium Falcon?” It was still more of a frame than anything else, but the shape was still recognisable.

“Yeah,” Christian said, his cheeks tinting again which made something funny pulse in my chest. “I, um, I like building them for fun. They’re good to take my mind off things, help me focus on being in the moment instead of dwelling on stuff. And I like Star Wars.”

“Do you have others?”

Christian nodded, chewing his lip and smiling. “I built the Death Star in the spring. That was fun, but it took hours. It’s upstairs so I don’t knock it over.”

My inner geek was dancing. I’d always loved Star Wars, and Christian and I had spent hours watching them as kids. My mum had even taken the two of us to see Revenge of the Sith for my birthday. As an adult I’d always longed for a couple of these sets, but they were so fucking expensive I’d never imagined getting one. I mean, this Millennium Falcon kit was worth nearly seven hundred quid.

“Can—can we build it now?” I asked, trying not to hold my breath.

“Really? I mean, you’d be interested in that?” There was a note of astonishment in Christian’s voice, while mine was barely controlled excitement.

“Of course! I’ve always wanted to get my hands on this.”

“Okay,” Christian said with a nod. “Let’s do it. Do you want to put a film on in the background? Maybe The Force Awakens? I haven’t seen it in a while.”

“Sounds perfect!”

Ten minutes later we were sitting on the floor, the opening credits of the film playing in the background while Christian talked me through what he’d done so far. It was obvious that he took his building seriously, and I had to admit it was adorable. After my pep talk, he handed me a bag and showed me the instructions he wanted me to follow.

“You know, I’m sure there’s a terrible joke about inserting things somewhere in there,” I said, watching the way Christian’s face flushed as my words filtered through.

“Probably,” he added. “But I’ve never thought of it.”

“Me neither, I’m not good with words.”

“I find that hard to believe—you’re doing your PhD.”

“Nah, that’s all smoke and mirrors,” I joked.

“So, tell me more about your work,” Christian said, picking up his own pieces. “I don’t know much about academic stuff beyond what Lily’s told me.”

I smiled, opened my bag, and began talking. And I didn’t stop. Well, not until the early hours of the morning. By that time, we’d covered my degree, Lily, our mums, the Champions League, and the new Star Wars and Marvel films. The only thing we’d avoided discussing was our relationships, but I figured that was because neither of us had much to tell. Plus, talking about new partners with exes is one of those weird grey areas I’m pretty sure you’re supposed to avoid.

With every word, I could feel Christian slotting back into my life like he’d never left, but at the same time, this wasn’t the same Christian as before. It was a new version—older, smarter, and sweeter. He was driven and determined and had a desire to know as much as he could and actually seemed interested when I spent another hour talking about my work. He talked non-stop about how proud he was of Lily and how much he loved her, and he was so endearingly serious and charming that I couldn’t help but be bowled over by him. And he was so disarmingly handsome that every time he smiled or chewed on his perfect, pink lips, the hot ball of desire in my chest burnt hotter and hotter until it felt like there was a supernova inside me.

I couldn’t remember the last time I’d felt this way about anyone.

It had probably been six years.

Review: Prince of Air and Darkness (The Darkest Court #1) by M.A. Grant

Phineas Smith has been cursed with a power no one could control.

Roark Lyne is his worst enemy and his only hope.

The only human student at Mather’s School of Magick, Phineas Smith has a target on his back. Born with the rare ability to tap into unlimited magick, he finds both Faerie Courts want his allegiance—and will do anything to get it.

They don’t realize he can’t levitate a feather, much less defend the Faerie Realm as it slips into civil war.

Unseelie Prince Roark Lyne, Phineas’s roommate—and self-proclaimed arch nemesis—is beautiful and brave and a pain in the ass. Phineas can’t begin to sort through their six years of sexual tension masquerading as mutual dislike. But Roark is also the only one able to help Finn tame his magick.

Trusting Roark’s mysterious motives may be foolish; not accepting his temporary protection would be deadly.

Caught in the middle of the impending war, Phineas and Roark forge a dangerous alliance. And as the walls between them crumble, Phineas realizes that Roark isn’t the monster he’d imagined. But their growing intimacy threatens to expose a secret that could either turn the tide of the war…or destroy them both.

Kind of a mixed bag.

I didn't hate it but there were a few things that left me feeling confused, things about the plot and/or world building that I could never reconcile.

For instance, Finn has been attending Mather’s School of Magick for the past SIX YEARS and cannot control said magic? At all.

That seems like a no brainer from a school with School of Magick in the title, doesn't it? I guess I kind of had Hogwarts in mind with objective being to train its students how to both control and utilize their powers. But this school seems to be like a any other university only with various paranormal people attending and primarily focused on forging alliances between pantheons. OK. But I still don't get why Finn was admitted since he's human.

At first I thought it was so he would be protected from random underworld beings that are trying get to him for his power which would also kill him, but...

All sorts of nasties are all over him like white on rice which "forces" his nemesis and roommate, Roark, to come to his rescue. Repeatedly.

The flip side of this uneven world building is the creatures that pop up are vivid and... pretty disgusting, TBH. The skirmishes Finn and Roark find themselves in are entertaining and they do make a good team.

I've no idea why it took them SIX YEARS to discover that they made a good team, but let me not beat the dead horse.

Roark being the Prince of Air and Darkness and the second son of the Unseelie queen is not only powerful but extremely cunning. At first he seems to be harboring a grudge against Finn for some reason but as the story unfolds we begin to learn that beneath his urbane and fractious exterior beats the heart of a man deeply and completely in love, a man who has made the ultimate sacrifice for his beloved.

Yeah, pretty swoony.

The romance and chemistry between them is solid. Had the enemies portion of the narrative lasted longer I would've been in hog heaven.

I guess I had it in my head that the next book would focus on Finn and Roark too since there were things that developed that left me wanting, but it appears the next book is focused on a different couple in which case I'm a bit disappointed by the ending. It felt rushed and though I liked the resolution I like my couples to couple a bit before The End.

Parts of the world building are good, parts of the plot are good and the overall romance is pretty satisfying but the whole could've been stronger. Perhaps it gets stronger as the series evolves. I could be interested in continuing the series; however, my opinions are my own and YMMV.

Night Kiss meme

Jin-woo was late and Min-su was going to kill him, but if he hadn’t gone back to the studio, they wouldn’t have their visuals, and then she would have killed him slowly. He’d had to scramble to find someone with the keys, too, forcing him to miss all the other presentations. He never realized how hard it was to find maintenance personnel on a campus this size. When he finally reached Min-su, she looked scared as hell.

“What?” he asked. “What is it? What’s wrong?”

“Um, I… I can’t breathe. I really… can’t.” Min-su puffed out her cheeks and fanned her face. “I didn’t…. If I had known, I would have chosen a different outfit. I would have done my hair, and my makeup is just…. Dammit. Why didn’t anyone tell me they were going to be here?”

“What the heck is she talking about, Jong-in-a?” Jin-woo demanded.

“We’re not just presenting to Park Soon-joon hyung,” Jong-in said quietly.

“Of course we aren’t. Seonsaengnim is there as well,” Jin-woo said. “This isn’t new.”

“It’s…. We’re…. Jin-woo-ya, Bam Kiseu is in that room!” Min-su said, grabbing him by his vest and shaking him back and forth. “HanYin oppa is in that room! Ki-tae oppa is in that room! Cheongul oppa is in that room!”

Jin-woo did the only thing he could think of. He slapped her.

Min-su stumbled back a few steps and just stared at him. Then she narrowed her eyes and came at him.

Jin-woo threw up his hands in defense of the punch coming his way.

“I’m sorry!” But it never landed. He peeked with one eye. Min-su looked completely calm.

“Thank you,” she said with a sigh. “I was losing my shit, and that’s not acceptable.”

“You’re good?” Jin-woo said.

“I’m good.”

“Good,” Jin-woo said as he began to shake. “I’m going to pass out now.”

And he did just that.

Jin-woo didn’t remember hitting the floor, but he figured that must have happened, as he was staring up at the ceiling with Min-su slapping his face and Jong-in looking terribly concerned. He caught Min-su’s wrist and held her hand to his face for a few moments, closing his eyes once more.

“No, you cannot pass out on us again. We’re up next, Jin-woo-ya!” Min-su said, an edge of desperation in her voice.

“I’m not going to pass out again. I just wanted you to stop slapping me and calm down,” he said. Then he slowly sat up, rubbing the back of his head. He looked at Jong-in and teased, “You couldn’t have caught me?”

“Nope, Min-su-ya was in the way.”

“Hey, this is not my fault,” she said, putting her hands on her hips.

“Well, you were shaking Jin-woo-ya pretty hard,” Jong-in pointed out. “There’s no need to panic. They’re people, just like us.”

No, not just like us, Jin-woo thought but wisely kept the words to himself.

Character Interview

Cheongul Interview

I’ll be the first to admit I fangirled just a little bit when I was told I would have the opportunity to sit down with Cheongul, leader of Bam Kiseu. Enigmatic and less talkative offstage than his bandmates, Cheongul nevertheless had such an aura of quiet strength and intense presence it wasn’t difficult to see why many young women and men gravitate towards him. Our interview took place in Cheongul’s dressing room after a fan meet following the successful conclusion of their world tour this past year. This reporter found Cheongul eloquent and precise in his answer with a pleasant charm and a quirky wit.
1. What do you do when you’re not working? How do you relax?
“Is there a time I’m not working?” Cheongul asked with a smile. “Honestly, I work a lot and it often seems as if that is all I do, but I wouldn’t change it, so the times where I’m not are rare. If I’m not in the studio, I can usually be found in the gym, usually on the treadmill or with the weights. When I really want to relax, I’ll go for a drive. I may go out to one of the national parks or just outside the city, and wander around with my camera.

2. You enjoy photography?
“Yeah, I fill up SD card after SD card, especially on tour. It drives HanYin-a and Ki-tae-ya nuts when I drag them around with me, but they don’t complain too much. I have a couple cards for every city we visited. We’re making memories for our fans and I make memories for myself, so I never forget the places we’ve seen and the people we’ve touched with our music.”

3. Of the many things you do, which one makes your heart beat the fastest?
“Dancing, I’m usually the one who works out the choreography with Goo-ji seonbae.” Cheongul said shifting on the small black leather couch. “There’s a real sense of accomplishment when all of the steps click together and flow just right. And when I see our fans online doing our dances, it makes me feel good. Also, songwriting, when I finally get all the pieces to fit together just right, that’s a rush, too.”

4. Many of our fans are really curious about the answer to this next question. Are you dating anyone?
Cheongul smiled and then laughed, covering his mouth with his hand, heat flooded his cheeks. “No, I’m not currently seeing anyone. I don’t really have time to date and any woman I’m interested in would have to understand about my schedule. I work crazy hours. There’s no normal work week with a regular day off here.”

5. What do you enjoy most about the company/industry?
“BL Entertainment is more than a company. We’re a family. There’s not a single person who doesn’t feel that way. Everyone from the lowest intern to the president of the company matters. The industry itself is demanding. Sub-par work and lack of effort won’t cut it. There are standards and I like that. Shoddy work pisses me off.”

6. Are there any musicians you’d like to collaborate with? Why?
“I’d like to collaborate with TOP hyung from Big Bang. He has a unique style and his flow is sick. If I could, I’d like to collaborate with Nam Ki-ha hyung. The way he manipulates his voice is amazing and his skills as a lyricist are nothing short of awesome. Our music has been influenced by other cultures, so I’d like to work with some western artists, too. Queen Latifah, to name one. I love her presence, her confidence, and there’s no denying her skills. This might come as a surprise, but I’d also like to work with Ice Nine Kills. They have a great storytelling ability with their music and their video concepts are tight. There’s a whole bunch more I could list but I don’t think we have that kind of time.”

7. If you could date any other musician or celebrity who would it be? Why?
Cheongul grinned. “CL as for why, have you seen her? She’s beautiful and confident, and sassy. I like that. I could be wrong, but I don’t see her playing games. I can’t stand games. Be straight up with me or it’s done.”

8. When, if ever, do you regret being famous?
“It doesn’t happen often, but when I’m… sick. I really hate being around people. I just want to be left alone, but I can’t. I have responsibilities not only to my company, but to my fans as well. I try my best, but there are times when I feel crowded and it makes me really cranky. I mean I can’t even go out to …get medicine without people following me. I don’t know anyone who wants to be around other people when they feel awful.”

9. When you feel homesick, what is your favorite food?
The answer came almost immediately. “Jiaozi. I love jiaozi and when I’m feeling homesick on tour, that’s what I want. Fortunately, I always have HanYin-a with me and he’ll make it for me. Then I don’t feel as homesick anymore.”

10. What was your inspiration for writing your songs?
“I get inspiration from things around me. Sometimes, it’s only a beat or a melody, other times, it might just be the chorus of the song. I’ve been inspired by a lotus blossom on a pond just as much as watching HanYin-a laugh or a drop of rain slip down a windowpane. Sometimes, it’s a more conscious effort. By that I mean I chose an idea, like Bái Hŭ, and then researched and read everything I could about him. From there, Tiger’s Pride was born. The only person I know who can just sit down with no prep and write a song is Ki-tae-ya. It’s as if he hears music all the time.”

11. What’s that one song that always gets you pumped?
“Can’t Beat Me” again Cheongul’s answer came quickly. “It’s a really upbeat song, lots of energy and full of confidence, and not just a little swag.”

12. What do you feel is the best song you’ve recorded?
“I don’t think I could pick just one. We have a lot of great songs, ones that really feel like a part of us. Crossing Time is one of my favorites, but I also think Dance with Me was a great one, too. I love Call the Dragon. HanYin-a did a great job with it and we all had a hand in Kiss Me.”

13. Describe your relationship with your band mates.
“They’re my brothers.” The words are said with such a casual yet firm tone, there’s no doubt he means them. “I am the eldest and the leader, but they keep me grounded just as much as I do them. We joke and play around. We’re really close.”

14. Are there any plans for solo albums?
“No. I like where I am right now.”

15. What’s next for Bam Kiseu?
“We still have pretty full schedules even though we just came off tour. We’re always writing music so chances are we’ll start putting together a new album soon. Local performances aren’t out of the question and we’ll always do events for our fans.”

Excerpt of Calling Calling Calling Me

“Whoa, whoa, whoa.”
Patrick woke up with a start to the sound of his bedroom door banging open, a shaft of light cutting across the floor and hitting him right between the eyes.
“This is not my room,” Josh said, sounding almost certain. “But I—I came back to—dammit.”
“Josh?” Patrick croaked. The room was swimming. He’d heard it was possible to wake up more drunk than he’d been when he fell asleep, but he’d never experienced this before.
Basically, Patrick had never been drunk, period. Unless he counted that one time he had a few too many glasses of dessert wine at Christmas, which he really didn’t.
“Patrick,” Josh said, and sat down heavily on Patrick’s bed. “What’s up, man? You left early. I heard—Freddy said you left.”
“I did,” Patrick said. “I was really tired.”
“You gotta work past that, though,” Josh said, tilting his head to one side and widening his eyes. “I didn’t even see you dance.”
Patrick closed his eyes against the surreality of this moment. “You don’t need to see me dance.”
“But I do, dude. You’ve seen me dance. It’s only fair.”
“You should probably go to bed,” Patrick said. “I mean—in your bed. In the other room. Your room.”
“I—yes,” Josh said. “Yes, I—give me a minute, though. Everything’s a little…crumpled. Um. Fuzzy. Weird.”
Even through his haze of alcohol and exhaustion, Josh was still impossibly adorable. He was covered in a thin sheen of sweat and his hair was all tousled and wild, and he was biting his lip and squinting like he was trying so hard to figure out—
“Your room is next door,” Patrick said. “I can take you there if you’d like.”
Josh nodded. “Right. Okay. But first—I had a question.”
Patrick’s heart flipped.
I want to ask you a lot of things.
“Yeah?” Patrick asked.
“Back in Fresno,” Josh said, “where you grew up, was it—like, was it hard? Being different there?”
That was not the question Patrick expected Josh to ask, and it was far too incisive for Josh’s currently intoxicated state. He swallowed.
“Yeah,” Patrick said, voice soft. “It was really hard.”
You have no idea, he wanted to say. You have no idea how hard it was.
Josh looked at him with blurry eyes.
“It’s going to be easier now,” Josh said. “I know it.”
Patrick wanted to believe him. He wanted to believe him completely and entirely and so much it hurt.
“I just wanted you to know that,” Josh said, and rose to his feet, shaky and slow.
“Are you going to be able to—”
“Pancakes,” Josh stated, spinning on his heel at the door and jabbing one finger in Patrick’s general direction. “In the morning, I will make apology pancakes, and they will rule.”
Then he turned and shuffled off, closing the door behind him before Patrick had a chance to reply.
