Review: Sex in C Major by Matthew J. Metzger

Stefan has ... fantasies.

He knows chasing those fantasies is only going to end in disaster, but he can't seem to stop his self-destructive spiral. He’s a transgender man struggling to come to terms with the intersection of his identity and his sexual fantasies as a submissive. He needs someone to take control before he loses it completely.

Daz can take control. He can teach Stefan everything there is to know about sex and submission, but for some reason, he can't get inside Stefan's head. Daz can stop Stefan’s self-destruction but not the fear that fuels it.

Stefan needs to know who he is before he can accept what he is. And it's Yannis -- Daz's aromantic, asexual, stern, and sarcastic partner -- who has the answer.

I'm not going to rate this mostly because I don't know how to as it defies the rating scale. It's not particularly "likable" nor is it a romance in the traditional sense. Were there a disturbing rating scale this would blow the lid off that, because Sex in C Major is truly disturbing on multiple levels. I'm guessing that lingering feeling of unease was the objective, though.

Stefan narrates this story and gives us an inside look at his struggles with gender dysphoria, depression and coming to terms with his desires. Shunned by his family when he came out as trans, he's now living off the government in a shithole apartment, has no friends, no job and spends a lot of time drunk or high futilely searching the interwebs for someone to fulfill his fantasies.

One drunken night he comes across Daz, word vomits his darkest secrets, one thing leads to another and he winds up Daz's slave. The BDSM content is extreme (humiliation, breath play, force play, bondage, sensory deprivation, biting, face fucking, chastity, orgasm denial, sharing and some blood play) and for the most part I had no issues with it. Sure, some scenes squicked me but it was mostly in regards to hygiene. That alley scene... *shudders* GAWDDAMN! Suffice to say, most of the kink fell outside of what appeals to me. However this was my most successful experience with objectification which is saying a lot because that is a hard limit for me.

In many ways Daz is his savior and their power exchange brings with it dependency which was difficult for me for two reasons: (a) there's no romantic connection between them, and (b) there's an uncomfortable level of BDSM being used as a cure for mental illness.

Sex in C Major is heavy on the sex, especially in the beginning. The sex is typically painful, leaving Stefan bleeding usually and always bareback. I don't have a problem with barebacking but when you're sharing your toy I would've thought a conversation to be a prudent idea. Make no mistake, Stefan delights in all of this. Until it's over. This is where things started to get sticky for me.

As I said, the kink wasn't problematic so much as the person engaging in the kink. Stefan's relationship to kink is toxic. His relationship with himself is toxic. His relationship with his own body is toxic. He's got impulse control issues, engages in self-harm and oftentimes feels suicidal, thereby making it impossible to have a "healthy" relationship with a master/dom. As troubling as I found this there is an authenticity and genuineness that Metzger brings to Stefan that makes him credible and sympathetic. Even though I didn't particularly like reading this book that doesn't negate the phenomenal job Metzger did showing the underbelly of a character who is in the muck, lost and on the razor's edge of winding up six feet under. However, there was something I found hard to swallow and borderline offensive and that was his fixation on "men" not being submissive, not wanting to be used, etc. For argument's sake let's say I believe that he only watches straight porn. If you're inclinations are kinky chances are you're going to watch kinky porn, right? Kinky straight porn is still going to net you domme/slave/sub porn which is rife with humiliation and pain, so this plot device rang as dramatic and contrived.

Regardless, Stefan's relationship to sex and kink made him very one note. If he's not engaged in some sex act or thinking about sex or masturbating then he's hating himself for his "sick" desires which made him... dull. Once he hits rock bottom and spirals into prostitution he mostly makes peace with the fact that he needs to be owned/used and then he becomes the vapid pet sitting naked on the rug. In a nutshell, he's not a well rounded person and he depressed the fuck out of me. So there's that. What's more, he never really endeavors to get to know Daz or Yan, so I never really get to know them on more than a superficial level. I think I like Yan and I was dogged by sympathetic feelings towards Daz, because he seems to have oodles of love to give and no one to take it, but I could be wrong. Who knows? They do seemingly forge a bond over the course of the story so... *shrugs*

Lastly, I think an editor or a mouthy beta could've done wonders to balance this story out. I found it overlong with some points beaten into the ground while others I'm still wondering how they were resolved like the pregnancy and sharing things. I've no idea whether or not this is indicative of Metzger's style or if it was engineering as part of Stefan's characterization, but at a certain point the repeating thing became less of a dramatic emphasis on certain points and more a bromide.

But I did like the creative uses of music.

I've no idea who to recommend this to but if any of the above appeals I can assure you that Sex in C Major is not a book easily forgotten.

Review: The Copper Horse: Love (The Copper Horse #3) by K.A. Merikan

London
1907, twenty years into the zombie plague

Just as Reuben finally settles into the role of Copper, his master’s proud stallion, his life gets turned upside down by a revolution that has been long brewing in London. But the men who come for Erik at his home bring much more than havoc. They uncover lies that Erik has fed Reuben, and the truth creates a rift between them that might be impossible to cross.

Even if Reuben still wanted to be Erik’s pony, is it possible for them to be together if his master loses all power and property? With no harness to hold him, no bit to stop him from speaking, can Reuben still be what Erik wants? Does he have anything to offer as a man?

The relationship they have established gets shaken to its core, and on the run from Erik’s enemies, they will both have to find out if the bond they share will survive, or if it will break.

Kinky. Thrilling. Intense. Kinky. Violent.

...kinky.

One hell of a crazy ass ride. I freakin' loved it.

Because of the revolution happening in London and Erik and Reuben were attacked at Erik's home. They narrowly escaped, not without some*ahem* scratches, but they managed to get away. Now they were on the run. Not only did they lose their home, but some secrets were discovered that caused even more strain on their relationship.

Their relationship had finally taken a turn. They went from captor and captive to loving master and spoiled pony. Reuben was settling into being Copper. Being Copper was more than just playing to Reuben. He connected with this fantasy at a very deep level. But all of that got turned upside down when they were forced from their home.

They lost more than their home. They lost their safe space. This is a dystopian, alt-universe trilogy, but the type of relationship Erik and Reuben shared was not accepted. They couldn't be open about it. Now, on the run, they don't have their bubble they created around themselves. Well, I guess Erik created it since he is the mastermind.

The story moved along quickly. It was much more of a thriller than the previous two, which mostly focused on the relationship. I found myself on the edge of my seat, gripping my kindle on more than one occasion.

But there was still quite a bit of relationship stuff happening. There were some revelations for Erik and Reuben to work through, but they were still so good together. Their Master/Pony relationship only grew more intense out of Erik's home. It was more natural. Reuben had some revelations of his own with his newfound "freedom". While I felt for them, I think the situation they found themselves in pushed their bond to the next level.
"No matter how confused Reuben had been about his place in the world since their household collapsed, on his knees, he knew exactly where his place was."
All that and I haven't even mentioned the kinky fuckery going on. Holy Hell. Like I said, this wasn't pony play to Reuben anymore. It was real and it was who he was. He really adjusted his mindset to that of a horse. It was... slightly disturbing. But I couldn't stop reading and it was weirdly hot. Erik truly was Reuben's master. He's a cruel man. There were a couple scenes that had me cringing away. But like I said, it was weirdly hot.

I wish I would have reread the first two before diving right into book 3. I was a little lost in the beginning. While I quickly caught up, I think it would have packed more of a punch if I had refreshed my memory.

I love this post-apocalyptic, dystopian, steampunk, zombie, victorian world K.A. Merikan has created. Throw in some erotic and extreme pony play for a seriously brilliant series. I'm so sad to see the end of Reuben and Erik's story. I know there are more books set in this "world", so I'll be sure to check them out.

Review: Slave in Training by Danny Tyran

Looking at James, his new physical training teacher, Max falls instantly in love with this black god with a bad reputation. God or devil?

When James says to Max that he is the devil, Max answers: "Try me, Satan!" With these words, Max agrees to be trained by James to become a slave. This apprenticeship will prove to be more a hard mental training than a sexual one.

Brilliant, Master James succeeds to convince Max's parents to accept this initiation to slavery.

Once trained to meet all his master's whims, Max will be sold. Deeply in love with his master/trainer, Max will accept his fate.

Far from being a descent into hell, this training will structure Max's life and allow him to make his way in this BDSM universe.

In a word: Fascinating.

First off, this is not, in any way, a romance. There is no HEA. I guess you can say there's sort of a HFN... but I wouldn't even go that far.

But still: FASCINATING.

The beginning of Max's story sets up his sexual experiences, as well as his need to please others and to always challenge himself, at a very young age. There's a lot of background and buildup to what he'll one day become. So, when he walks into physical training and starts eying his teacher, we know where he's coming from. Kind of. It was really hard for me to wrap my brain around what was happening to this 17 year old boy. Anyway, his teacher takes notice of Max and sees something special in him. He sees Max's need to always be better and to always be challenged. Heh. Well, he has a challenge for him, he does.

Max is in slave training with his teacher, James, during the school year, but once he turns 18 it becomes serious. Oh, I couldn't help but sympathize and then want to strangle his parents. They knew what he was choosing to do instead of college. They knew! And did nothing! I can't even... *shudders* I guess they tried to be there for their son (especially the dad) but they thought they couldn't help him. Uuuhhh... that's what the police are for! *shakes head* Anyway...

Slave in Training is in a contemporary setting, so this whole secret slave trade is done under the radar. But the slaves are able to leave at any time they please. Max is not being held against his will. Quite the opposite, the boy loves it. He revels in it. He worships his master and there's nothing he wouldn't do for him. Nothing. Besides calling him Master, Max also refers to James as his God. I believe he meant this wholeheartedly. His Master was his everything.

But Max isn't being trained for James. He's being trained to sell. And his training is harsh.

I would have gone 5 hearts, all the way, if not for the gruesome details of his training and his test. It was horrible to read but, yet, I couldn't look away.  But some of it was unnecessary, like it was there just for shock value instead of moving the plot forward.

His Master was harsh, but I feel that he loved Max. He wasn't perfect and there are times I wish he would have stepped in (especially when it came to Jean and Jerry *glares*) but it all proved Max's deep, deep desire to exceed at being a good slave for not only his master, but anyone who might want to use him.

Like I said, Max and his deep reverence and love for his Master was fascinating. The fact that he was treated so harshly and could leave whenever he wanted but didn't just boggles my brain. I can't wrap my head around that kind of thinking. And yet, it was so damn believable. The writing was superb.

I wouldn't recommend this to everybody. Hell, I don't know that I'd recommend this to anybody. Read the blurb. Read the reviews. Read the tags. It's one that almost hurts to read, but it just hurts so good.
