Guest Review: Unapologetically Me (Offbeat Shifters #3) by Colette Davison

Austin Steele is my idol. He’s also the guy I can’t get enough of.

Everyone thinks they know who I am—one of pop’s biggest divos. They don’t know me at all. Austin Steele makes me want to me the real me, only there’s some problems:

We’re both omegas, he’s nineteen years my senior, he’s nursing old wounds, and he wants to keep what’s happening between us a secret.

I thought a one night stand was all I wanted. Now it’s becoming so much more. But how can we look to the future when we can’t let go of our pasts?

Unapologetically Me is the third book in Offbeat Shifters, an m/m paranormal romance series with a continuing storyline. This book includes a misunderstood and unapologetic Arctic fox shifter, a caring capuchin monkey shifter, and a HFN ending. While it’s set in an alternate universe where omegas give birth, there are no pregnancy or birth scenes in this book.

Reviewer: Shee Reader

This series was new to me, and in wanting to read and review book four I was offered this book first, and I really needed it to make the next book more meaningful. The author is one I love but this book took a really long time to get me hooked. At first I didn’t like Charlie and Austin. At all. Charlie was playing the divo and was really good at it. Austin seemed to be needlessly punishing himself for mistakes made when he was a young man. Still, I stuck with it and grew to love both men for who they really were. Austin was trying to make amends to his son, even though he had long been forgiven.

Charlie’s health condition overshadows everything and revealing it to Austin was a risk, but Austin was decent enough about it. I wasn’t happy with Austin trying to avoid Charlie after they hooked up, though it was his low self esteem that couldn’t really accept someone as lovely as Charlie could really be interested in him. I think we’ve all been there. Amiright??

Once they got over the initial hump *snort* and started communicating with each other we could really see the potential for lasting love. The parallels between society’s expectation that two omegas couldn’t be together and homophobia and transphobia in our world was vivid.

The relationship did get going and that leads us to book 4…

Recommended.

I received a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Alpha in the streets, Omega under the sheets.

Blurb

Grayson Valins should have the world at his feet. Born to one of the wealthiest families in Seattle, Grayson was raised exactly as a Valins heir should be: sharp as a tack, witty, charming, and powerful.

He was the ideal son—until he presented as an omega.

Now he's barely holding on to the threads of his father's empire, watching the vultures circling overhead. If he makes a mistake with the Felder and Sons merger and acquisition, it's game over.

If he doesn't get married, either... that's just as bad.

-

Zack Felder's in over his head. After the tragic death of his older brother, Zack has no choice but to put his music career on hold and head back home to handle the family's affairs. The family business is drowning, and Zack isn't sure what to do.

So, when the older and wildly attractive Grayson Valins offers him a deal—a fake marriage in exchange for saving his family's legacy—how could Zack ever deny that?

But what happens when emotions get tangled and a good business deal turns into something much more potent?

Omegas in Power is a stand-alone HEA 72,000-word novel with a buff, snarky omega businessman and a sensitive, passionate alpha musician. Warnings for mentions of off-screen child abuse and grief.

Excerpt

“Wait.”

The way Grayson said those words sent a chill down Zack’s spine, and though he knew he shouldn’t have, Zack couldn’t stop himself from turning back around to look at the omega.

He was closer now than he had any right to be, towering just an inch or two above Zack, but for some reason it felt like it may as well have been a foot. His eyes were wide, mouth open, and now that he was this close, Zack couldn’t help but smell the sweet, intoxicating scent of slick and heat engulf all of his senses.

“Wait. Are... are you in heat?”

Grayson’s nostrils flared as he took another step closer, Zack instinctually taking a step back. His back hit the tiled wall, breath escaping his lips.

“And if I was?” Grayson’s words came out like a purr, one that made its way straight down from Zack’s ears and right to his cock. He leaned in close, so close that Zack could see that his pupils blowing, irises barely a ring of gray against a sea of black.

Fuck. I was right.

“I—I should go,” Zack spluttered, heart racing in his chest as the omega in front of him came closer and closer, staring at him as though he were a particularly fascinating bug. Zack needed to leave, needed to get as far away from Grayson Valins as he could get before he did something that they both would regret.

The man in front of him only tilted his head to the side, a look of consternation crossing his face. “Why would you do that?”

“You’re not thinking clearly.”

“I don’t need to think clearly,” Grayson replied with a little smirk, but the way he said it made Zack remember the words his papa taught him when he presented. An omega in heat—particularly a distressed omega in heat—wasn’t in the right place to say yes to anyone

And propositioning a random alpha in the bathroom sure as hell isn’t thinking clearly.

There was a tiny part of Zack, the part that yearned for a mate as much as he yearned for the oxygen in his lungs, that made him want to keep going. The man in front of him was beautiful and smelled like everything that Zack ever dreamed an omega mate would smell like, but...

Zack’s pulse quickened as Grayson leaned down, their lips so close that Zack could feel the man’s breath against his mouth. He could nearly taste him.

Every alpha instinct in Zack wanted to claim the omega in front of him. No matter what his papa taught him, what morals and lessons he learned, it felt as though Zack were fighting a war inside of him that he knew he was going to lose. If he didn’t pull back right now, if he didn’t stop himself—

He was going to claim Grayson Valins.

The same Grayson Valins that wants to take everything away from my family. Everything.

Grayson was the one who pressed his hot, hard body against Zack, engulfing him in a kiss that stole his breath and sanity away with tongue and teeth. There was heat and the feeling of a hand reaching up to pull the back of his shirt tight around his throat, making him gasp. That mouth, that sinful fucking mouth against his, made Zack’s knees damn-near buckle under him.

But Zack liked it.

Letting himself fall into the sensations, Zack leaned into the kiss, hands wrapping around Grayson’s broad shoulders to pull their chests flush against one another. He could feel the shudder of the omega’s harsh breaths against his lips and the staccato of his gasps as Zack ground their cocks together through the thin fabric of their pants.

Grayson groaned against his mouth before grabbing Zack by the back of his skull, forcing the alpha’s mouth against his throat. “Oh, God. Fuck. Please—”

Please what? Zack thought through the haze. The intoxicating smell of flowers and vanilla coffee made the hairs on his arms stand at attention.

Grayson seemed to know exactly what he wanted, pushing Zack against the nearby wall so hard it sent a shockwave through Zack, shaking him back to what little sense Grayson hadn’t damn-near sucked out of his soul.

What the fuck was he doing? Someone could see them—fuck, anyone could walk in—but that only seemed to make Zack harder.

Fuck, fuck, fuck.

He had ruts before where he felt nothing but the overwhelming desire to knot and breed, but never once in Zack’s entire life did it feel quite like this. This was a new level of need, an utterly impossible yearning to do nothing more than fuck into that warm, tight heat he could smell permeating through Grayson’s skin.

But with whatever self-restraint Zack had left in him he used to press both hands against Grayson’s shoulders, shoving him back hard enough to put a good foot of distance between them. Zack’s head hit the wall behind him with a sickening thud.

“Fuck!” he hissed, but Grayson only panted in response.

Today didn’t go as expected—at all.

Something flashed in Grayson’s eyes, a moment of clarity, but before Zack had a chance to say anything, Grayson wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.

“You don’t want me?”

“I don’t know you,” Zack shot back.

Charlie taught me I deserved to be loved. Will I be brave enough to claim him as mine?

Blurb

Temporarily separated while Charlie is on tour, my love for him grows. He is my future—or he will be, once we’ve made our relationship public.

Charlie has been patient—probably too patient—while I’ve been struggling to get over my fear that history will repeat itself. An unforgiving media destroyed my career, I don’t want the same thing to happen to the man I love.

Telling the world is one of many obstacles we have to navigate. The only thing I’m sure of is that we’ll find our way together.

Unashamedly Us is the fourth book in Offbeat Shifters, an m/m paranormal romance series with a continuing storyline. The series is best read in order, however Charlie and Austin’s story begins in book 3, Unapologetically Me. This book includes a monkey shifter who has to face his fears, an arctic fox shifter who will always stand up for himself, extended families, steadfast friends, lots of children, and a HEA ending for the main characters. There are pregnancy and birth scenes in this book.

Excerpt

“I’m feeling needy.” I walked up to him, pulling him close and kissing him while savouring his touch and taste.

“Me too.” Charlie smiled and then leant against my body. He stroked my back and breathed in deeply, his chest expanding against mine.

“What are you doing?”

“Memorising your scent.”

I kissed his hair and then inhaled so I could do the same. Charlie’s scent was very distinctive—toffee apples and crisp autumn mornings. My heart squeezed tight at the realisation that I wouldn’t get to hold, kiss, or be in the same room as Charlie for three months.

Staying behind and keeping our relationship secret, for now, was the right decision. Charlie didn’t need any stress on top of the rigours of touring. It didn’t matter that his schedule was more relaxed than most singers enjoyed; the demands of performing two-hour sets were exhausting. Worrying about the media gossiping about us was the last thing he needed. Or maybe it was the last thing I needed, and Charlie was an easy scapegoat for my fear.

But the media and Charlie’s fans would gossip the moment they found out we were a couple. I was nineteen years older than him, and we were both omegas.

Charlie slipped his hands underneath my shirt and started to walk me backwards, kissing me.

“This is nice,” I said during a brief break between kisses.

“I’m saying goodbye,” Charlie whispered as he tipped us both onto the sofa.

“Didn’t we do that this morning?”

“Uh-huh.” He pushed my shirt up and pressed kisses to my chest.

“And last night?”

“Yes, but I want to say it again.” He looked up at me. “I’m really gonna miss you.” He undid my belt. “I need to feel your skin against mine one last time before I go.”

Excerpt

“I can’t remember the last time I just hung out with someone before this week.” I laid my head on his shoulder. “That’s not true. It was right before my first album went viral.”

“That’s a long time.” Austin didn’t sound even remotely surprised.

“I guess you know how that feels, huh?”

“Yes.”

“The cupcakes will be cool enough to decorate.” I cleared my throat and stood.

We’d been having fun, and I didn’t want to drag the day down with drama about how lonely I was. Had been. Could I consign my loneliness to past tense now that I was spending time with Austin?

“I’ll help you make some icing if you want.”

“That might help,” Austin said around a chuckle.

I showed him the recipe I liked to use, loaded up a piping bag for him, and hand over hand showed him how to use it.

“You’ve gotta be gentle,” I said as I left him to it.

I carefully cut a hole out of the centre of each of my cupcakes, into which I pushed a fresh strawberry. Then I popped the top back on and began to ice them. I’d coloured my icing a soft shade of pink, much paler than the bright red of the strawberries. Using a controlled motion, I spiralled the icing onto the top of each cupcake.

“Bollocks!” Austin said.

I looked around to see that his hands were covered in icing, and the nozzle had shot off the piping bag onto one of his cupcakes. Icing dripped everywhere.

I couldn’t help but laugh. “You squeezed too hard, didn’t you?”

“It wasn’t coming out,” he grumbled.

He put the piping bag into a bowl, washed his hands, and grabbed a spoon. I watched for a moment as he dolloped icing onto the top of each cupcake. They looked anything but pretty. Still chuckling to myself, I finished mine off by sprinkling the tiny pieces of chopped strawberry over the icing.

“It’s obvious who’s won,” Austin said.

“No, it’s not. Don’t we have to do a taste test or something?”

“I guess so.”

“Get a couple of plates out.”

He complied. I cut one of his cupcakes in half and put a piece on each plate, then did the same with one of my own.

“Forks?”

“We could use our fingers?”

“I’m pretty sure that’s not how they do it on cooking shows.”

Austin smiled and grabbed a couple of forks. “We should taste the same one.” He handed me a fork. “Mine first.”

“Why?”

“So we’re saving the best until last? We’ll need to eat yours to get rid of the taste of mine.”

“They can’t be that bad.”

He raised his eyebrows. We both took a bite.

“Oh.” The cupcake was like a dry rock in my mouth.

“See what I mean?” Austin said around his own mouthful.

I grabbed some water to wash it down. “They’re not bad for a beginner. A little dry.”

“And heavy.”

“You might want to try adding a bit of milk when you’re mixing the ingredients. It helps to make the mixture light and fluffy.”

“What would help the taste?”

“Some vanilla-bean paste. It’s much better than vanilla extract,” I added, glancing at the small brown bottle of extract that Austin had bought but obviously not used in his own cakes.

Austin nodded thoughtfully before trying my cake. He closed his eyes and murmured his approval. “Now this is like an orgasm in my mouth.”

I snorted a laugh. “A what?”

“An orgasm in my mouth.” He devoured the rest of his half of the cupcake and then put his plate down. “You win.” He wrapped his arms around my waist.

“What do I win?”

“A kiss.” His lips and tongue tasted of strawberries and icing.

“Good prize.”

Review: Talos (Bloodlines of Fate #1) by A.G. Carothers

The Age of Man has passed, and a new age is upon the Earth. An age of magic and technology ruled by the supernatural beings that once hid amongst humanity has begun.

Talos - Vampyr King, Supernatural Council Member, and Despiser of Humans. Fate has a surprise up their sleeve for him.

Bayne - Raised by the human resistance, Would-be Assassin, and Despiser of Supernatural Beings. He's ready to sacrifice himself to kill his enemy.

Bayne is thrust into a world he thinks he knows but quickly discovers his whole life has been built on lies. Talos, perfectly happy ruling his corner of the world, is faced with an unexpected and unwelcome change that comes with the mate chosen by Fate. Together they must discover how to live and, in the end, love one another. But will Fate have more in store for them than just learning to love the species they hate?

Bloodlines of Fate is a new urban fantasy series set in a world destroyed by humans and resurrected by supernatural beings. Fate has many plans for the vampires, fae, unicorns, therianthropes, and humans of this new world. While their mates may be fated, love isn't that easy.

This book contains depictions of gladiatorial combat, snarky fem twinks who will cut you, kings in stilettos, and awkward heats with a pinch of daddy kink.

Talos is part one of a two part story arch. It does end in an HFN with a HEA tied into the second part. This is a type of omegaverse with mpreg

Ok, I may be exaggerating a bit but this new series was whack, and I mean that in the nicest way.

Briefly, this is a futuristic post apocalyptic world where humans aren’t really the good guys and the supernaturals have basically come to rule, having saved earth from said human greed and corruption. The leader is King Talos, a Vampyri (a born bred of vamp), who’s often the target of human rebellion factions. It’s just another day in paradise as Talos goes about his ostentatious life of a mostly benevolent, definitely indulgent, but always guarded routine, thinking he’ll easily handle another rote assassination attempt with nary a blip on his schedule. Imagine Talos’s surprise when the assassin turns out to be his mate and a human at that.

What you won’t get is an angsty push pull between Talos and Bayne. You also won’t get a drawn out thoughtful look at the evolution of said enemies to lovers. This is almost campy fun (if you like to toss in some brutality and depravity) where the author has taken the setting and the beings who inhabit it to the max. Regardless, I think mainly Carothers had a grand time creating this world and basically had the mentality of “anything goes” especially dabbling in the following (with varying intensity) which may or may not titillate...

-gratuitous gladiator gore
-public sex
-unicorn sex
-blood play
-urination play?? (beyond a simple golden shower)
-ménage (lovers of mate monogamy beware)
-daddy kink
-touches of bdsm
-heats and mpreg

Now while the story does focus on Talos and Bayne, it also focuses a lot on the dynamic between his brother and BFF (Odin and Majid are trying to complete their mate triad) as well as several other periphery characters who are sure to be featured in their own future books.

I’m on the fence whether I’ll continue, but I will say the sequel hints at the 3rd component of Odin and Majid’s triangle which is very enticing as I do love me a good gentle, or not so gentle, giant especially since it's going to be a bear. Honestly, I don’t think my staid self is the target audience but if you like violence and debauchery, fated mates, a new take on born vampires, along with a varied dabbling in all sorts sexual shenanigans, then this might be the tangent to take you away from the usual MM fare! Enjoy!!

Our perfect society is tainted.

Blurb

I run because I don’t have a choice. I run for those who can’t, for those inside me.

The Three Faced God should have chosen my Fate, should have molded me according to the needs of my fellow Malthusians, but some assume they are above even God. I should have been at least a beta, hopefully an alpha, but never this. They thought changing my body would change my soul, that I’d be a compliant omega while they used and experimented on me. Others die, others submit, and say its their Fate. I know different. A malthusian caused this, one of my own kind. They think they’ve won, but I’ll win, simply by living another second, another day. But can I survive alone?

Adult content, a gritty, alternate universe storyline, including genetic engineering, captivity, torture, domestic abuse, forced pregnancy, and murder. Alpha, beta, and omega genderfluid characters.

Trailer Video

Excerpt

Sunlight streamed through the windows. People were doing chores, inside and outside. How could the betas go about their normal routine as if nothing had happened? Because it doesn’t matter to them, SHE didn’t matter to them. There was a replacement on the way. Life would go on for the Grabars as if Ma had never been here. Well, Tav would remember her.

A cheerful whistle came from below. One moment Tav stood in the bedroom, the next they were hurtling out the front door, launching themselves at the surprised beta, screaming, punching, ripping at clothes. The beta fell backward, letters flying up in the air. Tav landed on top of the stunned beta, who only tried to defend their face from the hysterical assault of a child.

“Tav? Tav, what the hell? It’s just the post-beta,” Sayen shouted as the older beta tried to pull the struggling, nightshirt-clad youngster off their victim.

Strong hands grabbed Tav’s upper arms. Tav left the ground and stared into Pa’s bloodshot eyes. His bare, hairy chest, beard, and musky scent enforced his identity.

“You will not embarrass her by behaving like a wild animal. You and your siblings are her legacies. Act like it.”

Without another word, he placed Tav back on his feet, growled, ‘Deal with it’ at his sibling who had arrived, breathing hard.

Telish strode back into the house, wearing only his formal kilt, not looking back at his devastated child. Tav stood there, the anger gone, watching Ma’s mate, the alpha who had put her aside, had killed her, walk away because he had more important things to do than take time to comfort or explain why Tav no longer had a Ma. Tav didn’t matter, any more than Ma had mattered.

Sayen shooed the rapidly growing crowd away as Daven led Tav by the arm to the stone steps of the porch. Daven sat Tav down and put their jacket around the child’s shivering shoulders. The house stretched out on either side of them, the autumn flowers in the window boxes Ma had planted moved to and fro in the cold wind.

In a week, the weather had turned; Tav’s world had turned. Soon, everything would die as winter took hold. Somehow, it felt right that the whole world would soon suffer like Tav suffered.

They sat side by side, untie and nibling, silently watching the normal goings on of the estate for a good ten minutes. The estate went on as normal. Tav didn’t understand.

Not even the post-beta looked at them as they came out of the house after Sayen treated the scratches. They grabbed their bicycle and pedaled back toward the main road.

“What did the post-beta do?” Daven asked.

Tav didn't have a logical answer, so they shrugged. A long, heavy arm draped over Tav’s shoulders and squeezed. Tears prickled Tav’s eyes. Daven might not say it, but they did care, at least a little. Unlike Telish.

“Come on, Tav, there must have been something. I’d expect that sort of thing from Zep, but not you.”

Tav stiffened, insulted and a little afraid of the implications. “Why? Don't you think I can be aggressive? I'm not an omega; I don't blindly accept everything.”

Daven squeezed again. “Oh, I know that, pup. Although I’ve known omegas who packed quite a wallop before they manifested. I remember a certain scamp called Per who threw an apple at me after I stuck my tongue out at them.”

Tav turned wide eyes to Daven. “Ma did that?”

Daven chuckled. “She, or rather they at the time, most certainly did. The lump on the back of my head lasted a week. Now, what did the postie do to warrant a beating by Tav the Terrible? Because if I agree, I'm going to chase the offender down and punch them myself.”

“They were whistling.” It sounded ridiculous to Tav as soon as the words left their mouth.

Daven heaved themself off the porch, pulling up their sleeves. “Right, that’s it, bloody nose time.”

Tav jumped up and grabbed Daven’s arm, the post-beta didn’t deserve a bloody nose.

“No, don’t,” Tav giggled.

“I’ll have to take it out on you then,” Daven said and swung Tav up into their arms. After reducing Tav to a gasping wreck by tickling them to within an inch of their life, Daven turned Tav to face them. Tav’s brief happiness crashed.

Oh God, I laughed, I actually laughed, and Ma isn’t even cold yet.

Daven’s smile disappeared too. “She wouldn't want you to be sad. It was her time, part of the Almighty’s plan. Your Pa’s right, the best thing we can do to honor her is to carry on and be the best we can, but don’t think any of us aren’t upset. We all are, and although I wear kilts, not dresses, I promise I’ll be here for you, ok?”

Tav blinked back stinging tears, and Daven put them down. “That's the brave Tav I know. Go get dressed then start on your schoolwork; I'll be in later. Try not to attack any more delivery betas, even if they are whistling. They didn’t know, ok?”

Drawing up every ounce of courage, Tav nodded and went back inside to make Ma proud.

About the Author

Emma was destined to be a little quirky after being born as an unexpected twin in Hungry Bottom (Yes, it’s a real place).

Known as the Queen of Angst because she loves putting damaged, often sweet and funny characters through hell before letting them have a HFN or HEA ending.

She blames her rebellious muse (who looks like Chris from the Paint Series) for the erotic aspects tickling the angst and the humour climbing into bed with the erotic.

When not writing or reading in leafy Sussex, England, she herds Birman cats and sons; both groups argue that there are too many of the other sort.

Review: Honeythorn by Marina Vivancos

Omega Milan Pryor knows his duty. He must travel North through the continent towards the snow, the cold, and his new betrothed. They say that Lord Alpha Raphael Ledford, the man he is to marry, is as artic as the weather of his land. But Milan has always been an optimist. Perhaps he might find friendship in the arranged marriage. Even love.

It doesn’t take long for Milan to realize that all the rumours about Lord Raphael are true. Reclusive, distant, frigid. Milan finds himself unwelcome in what he must now call his new home. He’s used to fighting for what he wants—but can he survive a husband as cruel as Lord Raphael?

Being bonded to one who rejects you is a painful thing. Will Milan be able to win his husband’s regard? What terrible secret is Lord Raphael keeping, and will Milan be able to discover it before it’s too late?

Or will Milan perish along with his heart?

Honeythorn is set in an AU with a regency feel and a healthy side of steampunk tech. I really enjoyed the world the author built and she did a great job of working it all into the story organically so I got a good “visual” of the setting. And the setting is just as much a character as the MC’s and secondary characters. Rather than a gender divide between men and women, the society is split between Alphas and Omegas where the Omegas are not typically treated as equals.

The war has ended and to keep the peace the monarchy of each country has agreed to arranged marriages between the royal families. Milan, an Omega from the warm and sunny south is paired with Raphael, an Alpha from the cold and frigid North. The two of them are opposites personified. Milan may be an Omega, but he’s no shrinking violet and he’s determined to make the most of his new life and be a good Omega to the citizens of Raphael’s realm.

In the beginning their relationship was . . . not good. Raphael was really a dick, that’s basically the best way to describe it. There were enough glimpses of interactions with his subjects to show me that he was really a good guy underneath the prickly exterior, but his dynamic with Milan said otherwise. It was obvious he had a backstory that broke him, but being that the story is told completely from Milan’s perspective I didn’t get those pieces until much later.

So, the first half of the book was the push/pull of an arranged marriage between an Alpha and an Omega who had no hope of ever falling into like with one another much less love. Raphael comes across as just plain cruel for awhile and I have to say, it was a period where I enjoyed hating him along with Milan. You know how that goes? You and an MC get on the same hate train for another character? It’s fun.

Raphael’s cruelty was born of ignorance though and when shit officially got real for Milan and Raphael had his nonsense called out for what it was, he turned the corner and became the character he was meant to be all along. His backstory came out and so did the romance. It was hard won and well earned by the time the two of them started “courting”. There was some good steam before the romance came along, but the steam in the second half was so much better because the feels were finally along for the ride too.

Milan is a great character and once Raphael got his head out of his ass so was he. If enemies to lovers is your jam, then this book will be your crack. The enemy part was so well done and visceral, I really DID NOT like Raphael, but the second half romance was even better and sold me on Raphael eventually. I also swooned over how very protective of Raphael Milan was especially considering their Alpha/Omega roles. I think that’s what I appreciated about Honeythorn so much; while the trope is not new, the delivery was fresh and fun to read.

Quick little paragraph of love for the cover of Honeythorn. Look at it. Look how pretty it is! It also captured the mood of the book really, really well. That’s Milan and one of his beautiful suits right there, no doubt about it. And there he is sitting in his favorite room of the castle. I do appreciate the author making him so much more than just a pretty face with a side of sass. His intelligence and empathy towards others made me love him all the more.

The secondary characters were very strong and I enjoyed reading the interactions between them and the MCs. Secondary characters with that much depth can be helpful when getting to know MCs with so much story to tell so I’m being shown who they are and getting to know them at the same pace the secondary characters are and it makes it so much more interesting than being told who they are.

I would love a short follow up with Milan and Raphael (and their puppies) to see them settled into their HEA. Once the BIG conflict is solved there’s some downtime for them, but I wanted some more. Mostly just because I’m greedy and I was enjoying the warm fuzzies of their relationship.

Audiobook Review: Slow Heat (Heat of Love #1) by Leta Blake

A lustful young alpha meets his match in an older omega with a past.

Professor Vale Aman has crafted a good life for himself. An unbonded omega in his mid-30s, he's long since given up hope that he'll meet a compatible alpha, let alone his destined mate. He's fulfilled by his career, his poetry, his cat, and his friends.

When Jason Sabel, a much younger alpha, imprints on Vale in a shocking and public way, longings are ignited that can't be ignored. Fighting their strong sexual urges, Jason and Vale must agree to contract with each other before they can consummate their passion.

But for Vale, being with Jason means giving up his independence and placing his future in the hands of an untested alpha - as well as facing the scars of his own tumultuous past. He isn't sure it's worth it. But Jason isn't giving up his destined mate without a fight.

This is a stand-alone gay romance novel, 118,000 words, with a strong HFN ending, as well as a well-crafted, non-shifter omegaverse, with alphas, betas, omegas, male pregnancy, heat, and knotting. Content warning for pregnancy loss and aftermath.

Listening Length: 14 hours and 7 minutes
Narrator: Michael Ferraiuolo

It is definitely not a secret that I love me some ABO and this right here? Probably one of the best in depth reflections on this dynamic, delving into its origins and complicated culture, as well as the intricate rules and laws that aid the genetic drive and instinct that fuel the coming together of an alpha and an omega.

Here, in this post apocalyptic society, the human race has survived a long ago referenced “Great Death”. Females are extinct, but through many years of gene manipulation and evolution, the creation of different male subtypes have yielded a situation where only the alpha/omega pairing can reproduce. Thus, any and all social obligations are geared towards that top priority where, unless detrimental to one’s health, inhibiting conception or interfering with pregnancy is illegal. To help along the procreation urge, alphas and omegas look for their one true mate - their “Erosgape” - a primal instinctual imprinting that is the ultimate and most coveted life goal.

Jason is a young alpha who greatly romanticizes his future. He’s only ever thought about finding his “Erosgape”, and Jason cannot wait to meet this man so they can live happily ever after. He just has to be patient in finishing his education so he can attend the social events that facilitate such. However, when Jason suddenly and surprisingly comes across older omega Vale on campus, what Jason thinks is a done deal with his “Erosgape” is anything but. Being 16 years older, Vale long ago gave up his wish of finding his alpha and settling down and having kids. His life has not been easy and past circumstances have basically rendered Vale infertile and thus, the story mainly revolves around whether he and Jason will officially sign a contract to seal their bond.

I readily admit that most of the time I don’t quite mesh with Blake’s stories. What should be slam dunks, often leave me wanting or frustrated. Not this time around. Now, I know I have ABO beer goggles on, but I’ll reiterate again that this is probably one of the best I’ve come across (not counting my love for a particular fanfic pairing) at being thorough in relationship progression and keeping it angstily interesting and fueled by boatloads of UST. I was impressed about the exploration of this AU that highly prizes the relationship between an alpha and his omega and all the nuances that can come into play. Once imprinted, and definitely once consummated, neither will ever find another that can give them what they need. The uncontrollable alpha drive, coupled with the omega desire to be claimed, marked, and protected is what makes this push pull so compelling and fascinating.

Narrated by Michael Ferraiuolo, I’ve definitely found me a new narrator to enjoy. To me, he was a complete win, often reminding me of both Tremblay and Russo all in one. Ferraiuolo perfectly conveyed the longing and desire and painful insecurities of these two men. It simply was just a wonderful listen, and I hardly noticed that this was 14+ hrs long. Almost. Lol.

However, never fear that through all this contemplation and conflict is a really great story about two mismatched individuals who would be very hard pressed to work on paper, let alone real life. Jason and Vale are given the pheromone nudge to find their win with each other, and I enjoyed both MC’s immensely despite some niggles that other reviews have already probably commented on. This satisfied all my ABO buttons, where the good ones always make me squirm but titillate me nonetheless with dominance and submission, heat fueled yumminess, and of course KNOTTING. Luckily the sequel has just been recently released featuring supporting cast members Xan and Uhruo. I’m torn between diving right in or waiting for hopefully Ferraiuolo’s narration, but for sure, I won’t be saying no to reading more!
