I gave the rumor mill fodder for a lifetime the day I walked away from a lucrative music career without explanation.
People can talk all they like; my record stores are my lifeblood now, and I'm devoted solely to keeping them afloat in the digital age. There's just one little thing distracting me: an earth-dwelling sunbeam named Owen Harper. I don't know what I was thinking when I hired him. In fact, maybe I wasn't thinking at all.
Quirky and excitable, he's a walking, talking danger to fragile objects. His energy alone could power a small country. That's never been my style. Hell, I was probably cutting my first album while he was cutting teeth. He wants a music career, and I'm done with all that. We couldn't be on more opposite paths.
He's other things, too, though. Things that keep me up late at night. Things that make me forget I'm supposed to be simplifying.
And damn does he love to push my buttons.
Now I'm struggling to resist his pull, drowning in the memory of his skin under my hands, his mouth on mine. His laugh.
When a long shadow from my past comes calling with an offer I'd be stupid to refuse, there's more on the line than the survival of the shops I've dedicated the last fifteen years of my life to.
Because those fragile objects I mentioned earlier? One of them might well be my heart.
Resonance is the second book in the Rhythm of Love series but can be read on its own. It's a steamy slow burn bisexual age-gap, boss/employee romance with lots of banter and two obstinate heroes who really, really don't want to want the very thing they both need.

Excerpt
Spewing that tirade at his bewildered expression felt good for all of a handful of seconds, long enough for me to leave the room, head down the hall, and straight out the back exit.

My stomach lurched as I scurried across the parking lot to my car, and I cast one last glance over my shoulder at the neon sign before tossing my case in the back seat and then sinking into the front and resting my forehead on the steering wheel. I blinked rapidly against the gathering sting in my eyes. Brush it off, inner cheerleader suggested cheerfully.

I groaned and the voice went silent. About damn time. I’d liked the Sparrow. Too bad I couldn’t show my face there again anytime soon. Probably ever.

I thumped my head against the wheel a couple of times and waited until the burn in the back of my throat faded before digging out my phone and opening my messages.

Owen: Done

Ru: How’d it go

Owen: I tripped running off the stage

Ru: Shit

Owen: But I didn’t wet my pants because 97% of the water in my body had already come out of my palms and forehead by then

Ru called me at that point, and I answered with what I thought might be a Guinness World Record–worthy sustained “fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.”

Ru chuckled good-naturedly, the jerk.

“I’m not really in the mood for vocal interaction right now,” I told him.

And It Comes With a Pool by Sidney Bell

Ben parked several houses down from the address Matty had texted him, squinting through the cool, blue nighttime to make sure he was in the right place. They weren’t that far from his own house, and the familiar expansive yards and mature oaks hinted that this street probably had the same stringent neighborhood watch too. The thought made him wince.

Eventually, they’d get busted. It might be old hat for Matty, but Ben would be facing serious career consequences in addition to the legal ramifications. He imagined Dr. Yates’s crusty voice asking, “Why would you break into someone’s back yard to have illicit sex with a man you barely know in a pool?”

His heart thundered in his chest, driven forward by two competing thoughts: I can’t stay, we’ll get caught. And: I can’t leave, not before I’ve had him again.

If only there were a third option. One that meant getting to fuck Matty and not going to jail.

He got out of the car, shut the door as quietly as possible, and tried to amble down the sidewalk like he had no criminal impulses whatsoever. Matty was waiting for him in the shadows between two houses, and he broke into a grin at the sight of Ben. That grin did terrible things to Ben’s body, made him stupid, made him hard.

“You came.” Matty stole a quick kiss, his stubble scratchy. He smelled like he usually did, like whiskey and sweat, like he’d been out clubbing for hours, dancing with strangers in the dark amid pounding music, maybe even asking them the same question he’d asked Ben once: wanna take a risk with me?

Ben had said yes, of course. He’d been burning off a hellish week of meeting new patients while putting the final touches on a response to his first peer review request for the fucking New England Journal of Medicine and still trying to find his footing in the prestigious—if extremely uptight—cardiology practice he’d recently joined. Hearing wanna take a risk with me from that sweet mouth had been terrifying and attractive in equal measure.

If you asked Ben’s body, the answer was still yes, might always be yes. Just having Matty here in his arms, that body so limber, arching shamelessly so their hips made contact, his smile sly and teasing, was all it ever seemed to take.

“I love this,” Matty was saying in that rough, low voice. He nipped at Ben’s jaw, sending heat down his spine. “You’re always so fucking ready. Let’s go.”

By the time Ben could put thoughts together again, Matty had vaulted himself up and over the privacy fence into the back yard with surprising grace for someone who was no doubt half-lit. A moment later a scratching sound came and the gate opened up.

“Ta da,” Matty whispered, then led the way toward the pool, which was dark.

Dark and—empty?

“There’s no water,” Ben whispered back.

Matty seemed momentarily confounded. “Huh.” Then he shrugged and dropped neatly into the pool anyway. “Marco,” he called, far too loudly considering what they were doing.

Ben couldn’t remember if his malpractice insurance had a professional conduct clause. It didn’t stop him from following.

He landed with a crunch of dead leaves beneath his feet, and the concrete all around them radiated cold and the reek of mold, but they were completely out of sight, at least.

“It smells,” Ben pointed out.

“Yeah, it’s pretty gross down here.” Matty reached out, sliding his fingers under Ben’s henley to trace lightly along his belly. “Mmm. Come here.”

“Wait. You think this is gross too?”

“Yeah.” Matty licked his way up Ben’s throat, his fingers dropping to tug on the button of his jeans. “Come on.”

Ben tried to keep his blood in his head instead of his dick. “Then what the hell are we doing down here?”

“Because it’s fun.” Matty blinked at him. “Isn’t it?”

“I mean, if you think the idea of cops and guard dogs is fun, sure.”

“Oh.” Matty seemed momentarily nonplussed. “You really don’t like this?”

“We’re in a stranger’s grody empty pool,” Ben said gently. “It’s not exactly my dream spot, no.”

“But it’s a pool. Pools are cool.”

“I know that. I have a pool. Mine even has water in it. I’m not here for the pool.”

“Then why—”

“I like you, asshole.”

“Oh.”

“You can’t be that surprised that someone you’re sleeping with likes you.” Ben considered nearly a dozen quick, fumbling trysts in semi-public places and revised that assumption. If this was how Matty always had sex, no wonder he didn’t anticipate actual feelings forming.

“I’m sorry,” Matty murmured, his mouth soft and unhappy. “I thought we were having fun.”

“We were. Sort of. It’s just…” Ben took a deep breath and braced himself. “Is that all I am? Fun? Because I’d like to be more than that.”

Matty spun away with a groan, interlacing his fingers and resting them on top of his head. The move outlined the strength of his shoulders in his T-shirt, the fine muscles along his arms and back, and Ben swallowed hard. Part of him wished he’d never mentioned it. He’d be inside Matty by now, maybe, if he’d just kept his stupid mouth shut. Or he’d have Matty on his knees. Or he’d have Matty’s dick in his hand, hot and hard. He’d be listening to Matty’s sex noises, which were objectively a little stupid and whiny sounding, but they got Ben hot anyway. He liked the way Matty’s voice got high and thin when he was close, the way all of Matty’s scattered thoughts and energies cohered into a raw, rare focus.

“I need a beer,” Matty muttered, and lowered his arms. “Here’s the thing. The stuff I know about you, I like. But that doesn’t matter much, because I’m not the one who’s gonna have issues with us.”

“How do you figure?”

“You’re a doctor who does, like, Bowflex at six in the morning before you go save lives and shit. I’m a bartender who likes fucking in parks and partying and sleeping until two. I’m not cut out to be a doctor’s wife. I’m cool with that. I like being me, but I’m not sure you’re gonna agree in the long run. And it’s one thing to fuck a guy who thinks he’s slumming and another thing to try for something more with him.”

“I’m not slumming,” Ben said, stung.

“Sure you are,” Matty said easily. “I’m wearing a fucking slap bracelet with skulls on it.”

Ben made a face. “They’re not coming back, man.”

“You’ll see.” Matty’s smile was brief. “The point is I don’t know how to go to fundraisers.”

“You’re lucky you’re so damn pretty.” Ben touched Matty’s lower lip, and Matty kissed his thumb, soft and sweet. “Because you’re a pain in the ass. I just want to have sex with you in a bed sometimes and watch Game of Thrones together.”

“Really?” Matty’s brow furrowed.

“Exclusively,” Ben added, dropping his hand. “Exclusive is part of it.”

Matty didn’t say anything for a long moment. “Sex in a bed and Game of Thrones. That’s what you want?”

“Yeah. That’s what a relationship is, Matty. Frequent sex plus doing fun stuff together.”

“A relationship,” Matty said, the words careful, as if the shape of them was new in his mouth. “I could be in a relationship. I like Game of Thrones. I could be a relationship guy.”

“Jesus,” Ben muttered, even as his heart flopped over in his chest.

“No, I could,” Matty insisted. “I can watch television with you. I can pick you up when your car breaks down, and, and, and...like, pay…bills? Is that…do we get a joint checking thing now?”

Ben shook his head, unable to stop a sappy smile from forming. “That stuff comes later, man.”

“Cool. You might have to give me, like, tips and shit. I’m kind of a relationship virgin.”

“Who’s Rocco then?” Ben’s hand landed on the spot where a tattoo of that name graced Matty’s shoulder. He’d always assumed Rocco was an ex, but if Matty had never done anything like this before, that couldn’t be right.

Matty’s face lit up. “Rocco’s my cat. He’s fucking awesome, Ben. He caught a woodpecker once, but he didn’t kill it because he has a heart made of butter. Best fucking cat that ever lived.”

Ben pressed his forehead against Matty’s collarbone and tried not to laugh too loudly. It would suck to get busted at this point.

“A relationship,” Matty repeated, sort of wonderingly. He leaned up and kissed Ben, the kind of chaste kiss that the idiot probably thought was relationship-appropriate. But somehow Matty’s tongue ended up in Ben’s mouth, the kiss going hot and biting and dirty enough that Ben was thinking maybe they should fuck right now after all since they were already here. He put his hands on Matty’s hips and tugged, bringing their bodies together, only to protest when Matty wiggled away.

“Nope, not here.” Matty laced their fingers together and squeezed. “I have it on good authority that there’s a pool with actual water in it somewhere in this neighborhood.”

Quick-witted hustler Ghost is no stranger to living dangerously; survival has always been the name of the game.

He’s just always gone it alone.

Now he’s got the wrong people breathing down his neck, and the only way out demands placing his trust in the unlikeliest of heroes: Duncan Rook, a gruff cop whose ethics are as solid as his body.

Cozying up to a criminal is hardly what Duncan’s reputation on the force needs—especially when that criminal is temptation personified. Ghost is Duncan’s polar opposite, and the last person he expected to fall for.

So then why does every imaginable scenario for taking down their common enemy end with Ghost in his arms?

Group Review: A Deeper Blue (The Game #2) by S.E. Harmon

A year ago, Kelly Cannon couldn’t imagine he’d end up with his formerly straight best friend. It’s hard to believe he can finally kiss Blue any time he wants… as long as they’re in private. And there’s the rub. Despite Kelly’s promise to wait until Blue is ready to come out, he’s tired of sneaking around. The cracks in their relationship are starting to show, and there might not be enough spackle in the world to fix them.

Britton “Blue” Montgomery may not be the physics brainiac his boyfriend is, but he’s not stupid. He knows Kelly isn’t completely happy. But he’s not ready to be the poster boy for bisexuals and gays in the NFL. He just wants to keep his head down, play the game he loves, and go home to the man he adores. Is that too much to ask?

With the truth slowly coming to the surface, Blue must make a choice. If it means losing Kelly, there’s no decision to make…. He has to find enough courage to face the music and hope they’ll survive the fallout.

Man. Happily-ever-afters may not be just for Disney princesses, but they sure are a lot of work.

R *A Reader Obsessed* - 4 Hearts

Again, this shouldn't have worked but it did.

Most know I’ve become a tad avoidant of in-the-closet tropes because it just gives me too much anxiety, where instead of sitting back and enjoying some nice smexy fluff, I hide behind my hands as I turn page after page with trepidation, waiting for the proverbial bomb to go off. Yep.

I will say that Harmon brought to life Kelly and Blue’s legitimate fears, worries, issues, and hangups - all of which were very realistic, very understandable. Blue knows he can’t have his cake and eat it too, but that’s exactly what he’s doing and he can’t stop, he can’t help but be scared of the ramifications of him coming out. The focus would no longer be on the love of the game but on who he’s sleeping with, and Blue’s just not ready to change the world’s perception of him despite knowing this could ultimately drive Kelly away.

Kelly on the other hand, knows he has to be patient. Blue has to tell his truth on his own terms and for himself. Despite that, Kelly hesitates with fully making them secretly official (ie. moving in with Blue) because what if on the small chance, Blue wakes up and decides they’re not worth it? He’s just not ready to be that vulnerable.

These two struggle, and circular arguments abound. Literally, the entire book is them going back and forth dealing with their relationship - hiding, not hiding, being jealous, insecure, frustrated… So yes, this sort of thing would typically almost 100% guarantee ruin my enjoyment and yes, at times I was not a happy camper.

However, what Harmon does is deliver on the dynamic between Blue and Kelly that’s fun, funny, entertaining, and sweet and swoony in between all their relationship issues. She makes you realize, by making them realize that their love is worth it, that Blue and Kelly are meant to be, two puzzle pieces that only fit each other and life without one another is simply not worth living. Harmon doles this out in baby steps. Tiny little itty bitty baby steps. They get there eventually. I promise.

The journey was not all shits and giggles obviously, but the impact was a good one and the ending was simply wonderful. The smoking hot smex didn’t hurt either. Just saying. Unf.

Sara - 5 Shades of Blue Hearts

Honestly, I don't even know what to say about this book. I knew going in that it was going to be an angst ride because I mean, let's face it The Blueprint was, but now that Blue has decided that he wants to be with Kelly and the fact that Blue offered to come out at the end of the first book but Kelly basically told him not to... I had a feeling that this book was going to have its ups and downs and I was right.

So yeah, ups and downs it had but you know what? All of the ups totally outweigh the downs by a fuck ton. I never thought I would say this but Britton “Blue” Montgomery is now on my list of Swoony McSwoonsters when it comes to how he feels about Kelly. Good lord but that boy has some amazing lies when it comes to Kelly regardless of whether he says them out loud or just thinks them. Blue is head over feet in love with his best friend and since he’s figured out how to be with the man he loves, he needs to figure out how to spend the rest of his life with the man he loves.

I loved the hell out of this book. The happy feelings I got from Blue and Kelly in The Blueprint came back immediately when I picked this up, the first, second and third time I read it. Yup, you read that right. I’ve read this three times now and I am scared to go back and look at my notes and highlights because I might read it again. I can’t get enough of these two.

Blue and Kelly are finally together, totally in love and totally frustrating the hell out of me when the book starts. I love them together but the whole hiding Blue’s bisexuality and Kelly didn’t sit well for me and it doesn’t sit well for our new couple either. It sucks that they want to be together but after Blue offered to come out for Kelly and Kelly telling him not to, the subject is hung in the closet right beside their relationship. The hiding is a huge part of the story and all the growth Blue and Kelly go through makes every bit of angst worth it.

What is great about this book is you not only get one hell of a swoonly romance, you get major character growth of both MCs and get new supporting characters who surprise you and some that remain assholes like it was built into their DNA. You get the addition of a dog named Waffles who is a scene stealer and some gorgeous moments between these two with a few epic romantic gestures and supportive loved ones. I teared up a few times reading this and again, so worth it.

Blue, I love you and I love that you love Kelly. Just everything you do in this book from listening to speeches, to giving your own outside bathroom stalls, offering to pay for trespassers new phones to flowers, balloons, new suits and just standing up to anyone and anything that gets in the way of your one true love, makes me love the bones off you. Oh and you play one killer game of football.

Kelly, I would be stupid not to love you and I get you, I do. You are finally getting the life you want with the boy you have always loved and it’s pretty easy to push those you love away without realizing you’re doing it. You are so damn strong and Blue needs someone strong to hold him up when he falls and he’s fallen so hard for you, he needs your support and you give it. Over and over again even when he hurts your feelings and you want to walk away. Your love for Blue and how you have changed his life for the better drives this romance and you deserve every bit of happiness.

Optimist ♰King's Wench♰ - 5 Hearts

Blue and Kelly have left their scribbling all over each other's walls. Now an established couple but still with things that need to be ironed out between them, namely Blue's still being (mostly) in the closet, for them to get to where they both want to be. Never did I doubt their devotion. Both are committed to their relationship; they just have to work out the logistics.

From a sporting enthusiast's perspective, there were so many things that were, simply put, spot on. I'm not going to go into all of them because we'd be here for days, so I'll just say S.E. Harmon portrayed Blue in a way that resonated with me. Whether she's a sports fan or just a helluva researcher, I appreciated her depiction of him not just as Blue, other half of Kelly but as Britton Montgomery, Outlaws investment and corporation. Not just because it's true but because all of that extraneous stuff matters when it comes to the characterization and understanding of Blue. There's more at stake than his own personal interests if he comes out and Blue is not a selfish person.

I appreciated those details. They made sense to me.

As for the football in this installment, IT WAS GRRRRREEEAAATTTT!!! This is why I like sports romances. The team dynamics made me giggle and also roll my eyes at the douchey teammates, but that's team sports! Harmon struck a good balance between the footballing, romance and relationship development all of which combined to turn me into a grinning fool whilst reading this.

Before I start blathering on about how much I enjoyed the swoony-ness of their relationship, I want to mention how funny A Deeper Blue is. Harmon put her game face on with their internal dialogue and the banter between #Belly. Yeah, I shipped. Their comfort level shone in the dialogue. They've been best friends since forever which gives them that shorthand you can only achieve with someone who knows you as well as you know them. The one upping each other over the junk food made me snortle repeatedly. Seriously, who hides Doritos in a fireplace? People who need a Frito Lay disorder clinic STAT, that's who.

Their individuality shone in their internal dialogues. I never once got confused as to whose head I was in and kudos to Harmon for that.

They are opposites in virtually every way but they balance each other out spectacularly. Their easy comraderie and chemistry made it obvious how perfect they are for each other which did, at times, make it hard to read when they had to scurry back into the closet. A closet that gets increasingly confining mainly because they can't keep their hands off each and their propensity to make the moony-eyes at each other, something that's pretty obvious to anyone paying attention.

Blue's family, who we get to know much more about, played a significant role in this narrative. Not much of it was good either. Poor Blue. Thankfully Kelly's family is adorable so hopefully they will even out the dysfunction of Blue's in the future. Or they could just deploy Waffles to stink eye the Montgomerys. That dog would definitely do it for a cookie or twelve. But only for, like, a minute then she'd need a nap.

The ending was so... them. Funny and heartfelt and swoony all rolled up into a perfect little taquito. I wish it didn't have to be a thing for Blue, that coming out were passé because no one cared. But it is. Unfortunately. Still, my squishy marshmallow love tank was topped up with this ending and this book and I'm going to focus on that rather than the negative.

The only thing I disliked about this book were the words 'the end'. I do fervently hope that this isn't really the end. I've kind of gotten attached. Maybe a novella? A short story? A haiku? Something?

If you enjoy comedic and heartwarming sports romances this series is something you'll likely enjoy.

Review: P.S. I Spook You by S.E. Harmon

SSA Rain Christiansen used to be the agency’s golden boy. It just takes one moment of weakness, one slight, tiny, itty-bitty paranormal sighting, and all of a sudden he’s the agency’s embarrassment. His boss gives him one last chance to redeem himself—go down to Brickell Bay, play nice with the local police, and leave the ghost sightings behind. Rain is determined to do exactly that, even if it kills him.

Cold-case detective Daniel McKenna’s latest investigation is going nowhere fast. Five years earlier, high school student Amy Greene went missing after leaving her part-time job and was never seen again. Daniel is glad to finally have the FBI help that his department requested, even if it does come in the form of his ex.

It doesn’t help that Rain is pretty sure he’s falling in love with Danny all over again—if he ever stopped. Add to that the frustration of seeing ghosts at every turn while he works a case that’s stalled in its tracks, and Rain is starting to wonder if second chances and happy endings are just for fairy tales.

5 THIS MUST BECOME A SERIES Hearts!!!

Okay. Rambling Red is going to say a few words about this story and try to keep it short. I hear your snickers… save it.

I absolutely loved this story. I knew when I read the sample on the publisher’s site it was a book for me. Honestly, it vaguely reminded me of a ghost story (ha story, like 10 pages maybe) I attempted to write a few years ago and gave up on and it doesn’t matter because the author outdid mine and turned this story up to 11!

Told from the POV of Special Agent Christansen, we meet Dr. Rainstorm Christansen as he is being pestered by a young man, a ghost, named Ethan as he is on his way to meet his boss. Rain had been on mandatory leave and dealing with a psych evaluation after he tried to pass on information to Ethan’s parents from their dead son. Rain’s boss informs him he is being sent to Brickell Bay, Florida to help the local police department solve a cold case. You think this would be a good thing but Brickell Bay is home for Rain, where his family is and where he left the love of his life with a broken heart.

From the first moment Detective Danny McKenna comes on the page I was in love. From the first exchange between Rain and Danny I was hooked and from their first banter to argument and back to banter I knew this book was going to be an absolute favorite of mine.

I am a huge fan of second chance romances and this book was perfect. Danny and Rain have such history, chemistry, passion and friendship between them that is was easy to see how they were a couple and how well they worked together in every way. I adored that they could flirt and tease even though it was laced with hurt that both men caused one another. Sure, most of the fault belongs to Rain but Danny could have fought for his man. You know?

Goodness but the UST with these two if off the freaking charts hot! I was on edge waiting for them to cross the line either with lust, compassion or anger. I didn’t care really. I just wanted something to happen because the tension was so thick and delicious. Seriously. These two are hot when they are arguing over not drinking sodas and then almost jumping off bridges… yeah. This book… it kinda owns me right now.

So I have a confession. When it comes to romantic mysteries I can find myself skimming parts of the mystery to get to the romance. Don’t judge me and my hopeless romantic heart, the romance is my jam. But with this, the mystery is layered with Rain’s new craft as a medium I was hooked on what happened to Amy Greene, the why and the whodunit. The ghosts were hilarious with how they came at Rain and when he finally accepted that he was a medium and could help, I realized the possibility of this being a kick ass series…it needs to be a series.

Speaking of ghosts, I have to say I was wondering when Rain would tell Danny about Anna but Danny is clear on his decision, even if there wasn’t a rutabaga in sight. So there has to be another book or 10 for that conversation to happen, right?

Oh boy! This was good. I laughed a whole lot because it’s witty and ridiculously funny. I fell in love because this book is heavy on the romance and I sighed a few times with emotional moments between Danny and Rain.

That end left the book wide open for possibilities and I am just going to say it again: THIS. NEEDS. TO BE. A. SERIES. Who do I have to beg, bribe or blow for it to happen???

Review: Rule Breaker by Lily Morton

Is it really wrong to want to murder your boss?

Dylan has worked for Gabe for two years. Two long years of sarcastic comments. Two long years of insults, and having to redo the coffee pot four times in the mornings to meet his exacting standards.

Not surprisingly he has devoted a lot of time to increasingly inventive ways to murder Gabe. From stabbing him with a cake fork, to garrotting him with his expensive tie, Dylan has thought of everything.

However, a chance encounter opens his eyes to the attraction that has always lain between them, concealed by the layers of antipathy. There are only two problems - Gabe is still a bastard, and he makes wedding planners look like hardened pessimists.

But what happens when Dylan starts to see the real Gabe? What happens when he starts to fall in love with the warm, wary man that he sees glimpses of as the days pass?

Because Gabe is still the same commitment shy, cold man that he’s always been, or is he? Has Dylan had the same effect on Gabe, and has his solid gold rule of no commitment finally been broken? With his heart taken Dylan desperately needs to know, but will he get hurt trying to find the answers?

From the author of ‘The Summer of Us’ comes another scorchingly hot romantic comedy, showing what happens between two men when rules get broken.

I realized whilst reading this book that this, whatever trope this lone wolf/perennially traveling light/finds their other half is called with a dash of hurt/comfort, is my kryptonite. Every single time it gets me. Nowhere Ranch, First and First, Controlled Burn, the Enlightenment series, Bad Judgment, Rattlesnake and now Rule Breaker. If you can throw in a made family I'm likely to be putty in your hands. I laughed. I got choked up a couple times. I found myself grinning and, most importantly, I didn't want it to end.

Gabe and Dylan are boss and employee. They've worked together for two years and maybe at one point Dylan actually thought he hated Gabe, but all the "hating" was more lip-service to me, so if you're looking for an enemies who become lovers via hate sex this is not that book. What you can count on is witty banter, tension so thick you can cut it with a knife, sexy times and feels.

Now, the sex. It's topnotch with a little orgasm denial, Fleshlight usage, some come play, a touch of begging, rimming, big guy bottoming 🙌🏼 and these two, once they break the push/pull cycle, set the sheets on fire. Often. I was not mad at it, but sex is just one component of their relationship. The romance and the erotica were well balanced, IMO.

Dylan narrates the story of he and Gabe and he is sassy, snarky, witty and generally hilarious. He also has the biggest heart, a heart big enough to make up for the dearth of love in Gabe's past. What impressed me was how well developed Gabe was even though we don't get his perspective until the epilogue. Morton did an incredible job of doling out pieces of the Gabe puzzle so that by the time the Christmas sequence happened, I knew. I do wish I understood that club scene better, though. I'd dance a jig for a short from Gabe's perspective.

Gabe is a grump and an alpha, but it was so hard for me not to like him. It's obvious that most of his curmudgeonly ways are a defense mechanism, because everybody leaves. He just can't handle losing anyone else so he's closed himself off and told himself he's happy inside his beautiful and sterile shell.

The trajectory of their story was predictable in a broad sense but I found it no less compelling for it; it had to happen that way to balance their relationship otherwise Dylan would always question it. So, yes, expect a glorious HEA. At one point I was convinced Morton was trying to kill me, because BIG GUNS. I have a weakness for the possessive and growly ones and Gabe gets about eleventy kabrillion different kinds of possessive and growly once he's committed to Dylan. 😍 It was a sight to behold.

Maybe it did get a little sappy and maybe I thought Gabe's turnabout was quick, but the flip side of that coin is he's in love for the first time in his life. Weren't we all a little punch drunk and heart eyed the first time? So the sap in me threw the cynic in me some shade and told her to STFU and stop interrupting The Feelsfest! But then he played "In Your Eyes" for Dylan and even the cynic was slow clapping while surreptitiously grabbing a tissue for acute onset allergies.

*sniffles*

All the secondary characters play their roles well, even the asstacular Fletcher. *gag* I would welcome a follow up on Jude or Henry. Or both! #greedy

Recommend to hurt/comfort and whatever the hell this devoted singleton to committed boyfriend trope is called and those who like to wallow in the squishy feels.

Also, for all two of you who haven't read it already, here's the link to Gabe's proposal that we sort of got dangled with in the epilogue.

Review: The Sumage Solution (San Andreas Shifters #1) by G.L. Carriger

Can a gentle werewolf heal the heart of a smart-mouthed mage?

NYT bestseller Gail Carriger, writing as G. L. Carriger, presents an offbeat gay romance in which a sexy werewolf with a white knight complex meets a bad boy mage with an attitude problem. Sparks (and other things) fly.

Max fails everything - magic, relationships, life. So he works for DURPS (the DMV for supernatural creatures) as a sumage, cleaning up other mages’ messes. The job sucks and he’s in no mood to cope with redneck biker werewolves. Unfortunately, there’s something oddly appealing about the huge, muscled Beta visiting his office for processing.

Bryan AKA Biff (yeah, he knows) is gay but he’s not out. There’s a good chance Max might be reason enough to leave the closet, if he can only get the man to go on a date. Everyone knows werewolves hate mages, but Bryan is determined to prove everyone wrong, even the mage in question.

Delicate Sensibilities?

This story contains M/M sexitimes and horrible puns. If you get offended easily, then you probably will. The San Andreas Shifter stories contain blue language, dirty deeds, and outright admiration for the San Francisco Bay Area. Not for the faint of heart (mouth/tongue/etc.).

I have to admit that I was surprised by how well this turned out for me.  I read the prequel, Marine Biology, and thought it was a cute little shifter-fluff story.  It wasn't bad, a bit silly perhaps, but there wasn't really much to it.  I thought I would be getting more of the same with this book.

I couldn't have been more wrong.

I was blown away by this story.  I loved it so much!  The banter between Max and Bryan was off the charts and I laughed out loud many, many times. This is my kind of humor; a mix of witty banter, clever one-liners with some juvenile shenanigans thrown in to sweeten the pot.

It sparkled on his tongue with tiny bubbles of carbonation.  "Really, Max?  Fizzy jizz?"
"I see werewolves do have a heightened sense of taste.  It's a mage thing."
"The champagne of cocks?"
"See how I spoil you?"

I mean, how can you go wrong with a mage whose jizz is carbonated and a werewolf whose is spicy like hot sauce?

"I like it when you call me Bryan."
"Not Muscles?"
I like it when you call me that too, Trouble." You can call me anything you like so long as you smile that way.
"What if I call you Habanero?" Max waggled his eyebrows suggestively.
"Only if I can use Sparkles."
"Ew, no."
"Seltzer?"
"Stop it." Was Max blushing? Super hard to tell.
"Carbonation Man?" Biff pressed his advantage.
Max sputtered coffee. "Here I cum to save the day?"
"Mighty jizz is on it's way?"
"With the power of fizzy dick!"

This wasn't all humor and shenanigans; there was quite a bit of depth here too.  Max is a sumage, a dud, who never manifested his powers.  He's been reduced to being no more than a dumping ground for "real" mages to off-load their excess magic when it builds up too much.  Having grown up hearing how much of a disappointment he is from his abusive father, he's a bit bitter.  Okay, that's a lie.  He's way more bitter than just a bit.  I may or may not have wanted to shake him a few times or at least sit him down in front of a mirror, a la Stuart Smalley until he could see how wonderful a person he is and how valuable he is to those who love him.

Bryan came along just in time, it seems.

Bryan, oh Bryan. *sigh*  I love that big, stoic werewolf something fierce!  He doesn't say much, but when he finally opens his mouth, the most gorgeous words flow out.  I won't spoil it by quoting it here because some things you need to experience for yourself, but when he finally spoke up and told Max how he really feels, it was exquisite.  It had me swooning like a proper Southern lady.  I must have read that passage about ten or fifteen times, it was so beautiful.

What surprised me the most about this book was how smart the writing was.  The story is told in such a way that you don't get how clever it really is until you're smacked in the face with a chapter title and a couple of paragraphs a little more than halfway through the book.  I was just reading along, enjoying the humor when WHAM!  and it was like a lightbulb going on over my head.  It was so clever!  Very tongue-in-cheek, if you will.

I loved all of the other characters as well.  Every one of them had a distinct voice; there were no cookie-cutter or throw-away characters to be found.  Even the villain had quite a bit of depth to them.  The only thing I found a bit lacking was the world building when it came to the magic.  It wasn't that the actual world building was lacking per se, but sometimes I felt like the author was referencing things from a previous book or series and I was supposed to already know what this stuff is and the history of it.  But, seeing as how I've never read this author before, I got a bit lost in the telling of how it works.

This was a fun story packed with tons of feels.  I really hope the author writes many more books for this series.  If you like a good shifter story, this is the book for you.  If you like witty banter and shenanigans, this is the book for you.  If you like a story with depth and angst and romance, this is the book for you.  Hell, if you like to read, this is the book for you.  Cause, really, you can't go wrong with this story.
