Review: DSP Advent: Homemade for the Holidays Week 3

Choosing the right gift for that special someone can be the most daunting part of the holidays. In a sea of mass-produced items, why buy when you can DIY? The end-of-the-year festivities are the best time for crafts, whether they’re made from yarn, paper, flour, or even code. And with some love and luck, these special presents might inspire a romance that lasts an evening… or a lifetime. Nothing makes the season merry and bright like a gift handmade from the heart, and to bring smiles to the faces of the ones they care about, these guys are willing to get creative.

Week 3 is here!

Hole-Hearted by Sam Burns

Pediatrician Luce Wright’s bad breakup gets worse when his drunk ex drives a car through his house a week before Christmas. His whole family is coming over in just a few days, and he can’t have a hole with a tarp over it in the middle of his dining room. Fortunately his neighbor’s son is moving back into town, and he owns a construction company. Can Luce and his homemade cookies persuade Darren to mend the hole in the house… and maybe the one in Luce’s heart too?

Ann - 2.5 Hearts

Well, that escalated quickly. Hole-Hearted is an extra short story so the romance/lust approached light speed to make it be a thing in 20 pages. I honestly thought I got to know Luce (and his family’s dynamic) pretty well in the page time given, so I was pretty happy in the ‘getting to know the MC’ department. Darren was more of a shell of a character, he didn’t get much beyond a basic description and history.

Luce’s ex causes major damage to Sam’s house right before Christmas and it’s super handy dandy that his neighbors son has returned home and has his own construction company. Soooo, he’s giving Luce an idea of time for repairs, etc., comments are made about how the neighbor wants to fix them up and wham, bam, thank you Darren, the two are dry humping in the damaged dining room. It kind of felt like a little too much gay convenience, as in, your both gay, so you should obviously date.

There was a very optimistic HFN, but I didn’t get enough chemistry to base that on anything solid. Both characters and their respective families were happy though, so yay for home repairs and neighborly convenience!

A Holiday Homecoming by Liv Rancourt

Ten years ago Jon’s passion for the piano took him across the country to New York, where a demanding concert career consumed his life and left him no time to look back. His father’s stroke is the only thing that brings him home to Seattle. The sickroom makes for a dreary holiday until Jon runs into Bo, whose inner light can make anything sparkle.

Bo loves the holidays: the food, the crafts, the glitter! A fling with an old school friend—who grew up to be his celebrity crush—makes a good thing better. The season turns sour, though, when Jon is offered a gig he can’t refuse. He wants Bo to share the moment, but Bo doesn’t fly. Anywhere. Ever.

Is this goodbye, or will a handmade ornament bring Jon home to Bo?

Ann - 4 Hearts

I liked this one. It’s a little darker and a little bittersweet, but Bo makes everything better and he was the necessary light in A Holiday Homecoming.

Jon is at a bit of a forced crossroads with his family and career. He’s come home to help his mom care for his father who recently suffered a stroke. They aren’t the closest of famiies and reading about their lives before and after was actually kind of sad. Jon and his dad have some undefined animosity between them that was alluded to and witnessed, but not really explored. So, I felt like something was missing a bit there.

Now, Bo, Bo is a force to be reckoned with. Bo and Jon were friends in middle school and Bo still lives in the town they grew up in. He’s close with his family, makes friends almost before he even meets them and he and Jon have some chemistry between them that needs exploring. They were too young to know what they were feeling back in the day, but now they know they want/need each other.

Jon is there temporarily though and it’s pretty easy for circumstances to convince him to rethink his future. Which I really appreciated. A lot of times a character will dig their heels in for “reasons” without giving the sappy stuff a chance to change their mind. Jon finally decides to give himself a full opportunity at life and it’s amazing what a compromise or two can do.

I completely bought into a HEA for these two, it’s kind of necessary.

Love in 24 Frames by C.S. Poe

Declan Groves is a CPA in New York City. His adult life is dictated by routine and borderline monotony. The need to express himself, in ways his career and crippling shyness have never allowed, leads Declan to becoming an amateur stop-motion filmmaker.

The one problem is that Declan is also in love with the Wandering Artist Studios receptionist Shota Watanabe. Shota has always had a smile and engaging comment ready for Declan, but even if it is more than casual politeness, Declan hasn’t been able to get out more than a tongue-tied sentence at a time. And a man like Shota surely has no intention of waiting forever.

So when an unexpected change to Declan’s daily schedule throws the two together outside of the studio, it might be the catalyst needed to explore what’s unspoken between them. But if they’re to have a future, Declan needs to find a way to tell Shota how he truly feels.

 R *A Reader Obsessed* - 4 Holiday Hearts

I’ve read every single one of Poe’s advent stories, and I’ve yet not been disappointed. This was a total win!

Understated and sweet, this starts with Declan - older, so so shy, and unable to make a move on his secret crush Shota.

Cue some awkwardness and a back and forth slow burn that ended with a really wonderful HEA for these two - and just in time for the holidays!

Poe definitely has that rare talent for shorts. This is one advent that will warm you up and keep you cozy through the cold wintery days, leaving you wanting more but not at all dissatisfied!

Ann - 4.5 Hearts

Love in 24 Frames is absolutely adorable was exactly what I expected from C.S. Poe. I read her advent tales faithfully every year and she has a real gift for writing short stories.

Declan is incredibly shy and his shyness is holding him back from his dream man who works at the studio that Declan rents to work on his stop motion animation project. Shota is charming and is subtley giving off interest vibes in Declan’s direction, but Declan is clueless and there’s no way he would believe that someone as incredibly lovely as Shota would be interested in him.

But, literally no one is as charming as a smitten Declan and through circumstances the two end up spending time together and Declan starts some actively wooing Shota and oh my, what an ideal wooing it was. Declan is quiet and sincere and Shota was perfect for him. Shota appreciated every little thing and everything about it made me happy.

I would have loved to dive into Shota’s life a little bit and to see a little redemption for him in the form of a Noah takedown, but all that would have derailed this from being a short story. The journey Declan and Shota took was such a treat and this one will be going on my Christmas reread list.

Making the Holidays Happy Again by Pat Henshaw

Blacksmith Butch has secretly loved his best friend, science nerd Jimmy, since grade school. Now their shops in Old Town Seven Winds, California, are only doors from each other.

They’re about to turn thirty, and Butch refuses to wait another day to make a decision: propose to Jimmy and start the family he’s always wanted or forget his dream to avoid risking their friendship. Why can’t the choice be as easy as creating decorative ironwork in his forge?

 R *A Reader Obsessed* - 3 Hearts

Another easy going advent that features a gentle giant and a friends to lovers trope.

As per the blurb, Butch and Jimmy have been friends for forever, and Butch has finally resigned himself that things will never progress further than that and hence, he needs to just move on and make some long term plans without his BFF.

Beware that this is all in Butch’s voice, and the author made it a point over and over how not educated he is. Admittedly, Butch’s low self esteem bummed me out, and I didn’t want that to be the main thing holding him back. Not surprisingly, he and Jimmy do get their happy ending, though I would’ve appreciated Jimmy’s POV to better understand his actions and feelings.

Regardless, I always give a lot of leeway with holiday reads and in the end, Butch and Jimmy’s happiness is what counts!

Ann - 2.5 Hearts

This friends to lovers story had a great setup and the little town sounded so quaint and I just wanted to pack up and visit.

The story is told through Butch’s POV and I liked him very much. It was mentioned repeatedly that Butch had not graduated high school he referred to himself as dumb entirely too often. It made me sad for him, because he was a successful businessman and an accomplished artist, he is obviously intelligent. His poor grammar made him seem like more of a caricature and wasn’t necessary and became slightly distracting.

I didn’t get much of a feel for Jimmy. He didn’t get a ton of page time and the time he and Butch were together was spent bickering. I was told they were BFFs forever, but I didn’t get a solid feel for what I was being told. I did get a good gist of Butch’s relationship with pretty much everyone else and he was a solid guy and good friend.

Jimmy went from 0 to 60 at the end and while it was what everyone wanted, especially Butch it came a bit out of the blue and that’s where a bit of Jimmy’s POV would have been helpful.

The Music Box by Kassandra Lea

It’s the eve of Alvin’s favorite holiday—the little-known St. Nick’s Day. His devoted boyfriend, woodworker Milo, has been planning for months to make it a day neither of them will forget, and their peaceful annual nighttime walk will pale in comparison to what Milo has secreted away in the basement.

Ann - 4 Hearts

The Music Box is a refreshingly sweet story about an established couple and there just aren’t enough of those around. We’re dropped into a moment with Alvin and Milo and these two are really good with moments. The author did a great job of showing the relationship between the two through great dialog and references to their past and wishes for their future.

Milo has a special surprise hidden away for Alvin for St. Nick’s Day. St. Nick’s Day is their own special day where they have a some sweet homespun traditions and the two of them are incredibly sweet together. Like really, really sweet. Really sweet.

The story of the tree and Milo’s gift for Alvin are so very thoughrful and something every established couple wishes they could have in their lives, probably not super realistic, but I don’t read for realism, I want the thoughtful sugar and Milo and Alvin delivered.

Notes from Home by Dirk Greyson

While deployed on a covert mercenary assignment, Johnny doesn’t have much in the way of holiday cheer. But the mysterious notes from Dex that somehow appear in his bunk—reminding him of the gifts, cookies, celebrations, and most of all, love, waiting for him back in Wisconsin—help him get through the long, hot days. Will they be enough to keep his spirits up when the rest of his unit goes home to their families and he’s left alone?

Ann - 4 Hearts

This short and sweet little nugget really delivered a lot of feels for being only 22 pages long. All the more impressive considering the two MC’s aren’t even together for the bulk of the story.

Johnny is on assignment and receives love letters from home from Dex on the regular and those letters get him through the hot and lonely days and nights. The author does a really solid job of showing how much these two love one another through Dex’s letters and handmade Christmas tchotchkes, as well as through Johnny’s inner musings. The fact that they won’t be able to be together for the holidays is heartbreaking, but something that they both accept as part of Johnny’s job for the greater good.

The ending is a perfect coming home moment and my heart grew three sizes just reading it.

Review: Haunted (Hours of the Night #2.5) by Irene Preston & Liv Rancourt

Noel Chandler had a good reason for leaving the L.A.P.D. for New Orleans, but when he walks into a burned out Garden District mansion, he discovers there are some things he can’t outrun. The spooks can find him anywhere.

As the resident historian for the cable show Haunts and Hoaxes, Professor Adam Morales keeps an open mind about the supernatural. Or that’s what he tells himself, until he meets a man who puts that principle to the test. Noel’s smart, sexy, and has killer cop instincts. One glance from his bedroom eyes has Adam ready to believe anything.

But is Noel haunted, crazy, or just another hoax?

I have loved this series ever since I read Vespers but I didn't love this short.

Preston and Rancourt created two rich and multi-dimensional characters in Thad and Sara. The atmosphere they've crafted for them to inhabit is luscious, capable of transporting me to the Big Easy every time.

"Haunted", by comparison, is anemic. I know it's not meant to be compared nor is it fair to do so, but Thad and Sara cast a big shadow and Noel and Adam failed to break from that shadow. For me.

I found their connection implausible and they weren't well developed. Noel starts off being an anger ball but 180s for seemingly no reason in the middle and starts disclosing things to Adam and trusting him when he ordinarily trusts no one.

The paranormal aspects had potential, but again, they fell flat for me.

There are any number of secondary characters in this series that have potential and perhaps a different pairing would've been more successful but these two characters failed to hold my interest. Maybe if it longer and they were more fleshed out it would've worked better.

I wouldn't recommend this but I would most definitely recommend the rest of the series, however my opinions are my own and YMMV.

Review: Nocturne (Hours of the Night, #2) by Irene Preston & Liv Rancourt

It's Mardi Gras, cher, but this year le bon temps kick off with murder…

For generations, the White Monks have treated the vampire Thaddeus Dupont as a weapon in their battle against demons. However, when a prominent matron drops dead at a party, Thaddeus and his lover Sarasija are asked to find her killer. Their investigation leads them to an old southern family with connections everywhere: Louisiana politics, big business, the Church, and an organization just as secret as the White Monks.

Meanwhile, an esoteric text containing spells for demon-summoning has disappeared, Thaddeus is losing control of le monstre, and Sara is troubled by disturbing dreams. These nightmares could be a side-effect of dating a vampire, or they could be a remnant of his brush with evil. As the nights wear on, Sara fears they are a manifestation of something darker – a secret that could destroy his relationship with Thaddeus.

Back in the Big Easy again and it never felt so good!

And confusing...

Seriously, like, WHAT IS HE????

Never mind that now. No sense dwelling. But it seems fairly obvious the series will continue since we're left with a whole mess of dangling threads or should I say beads since NAWLINS, Y'ALL!

Nocturne picks up where Vespers left off, so this should not be read as a standalone. They are almost immediately thrust into a murder mystery complete with witches, warlocks and demons and all smack dab in the middle of Mardi Gras!

These authors capture that whole anything can happen/sorta spooky/there are things that go bump in the night thing that surrounds New Orleans superbly. The essence and mystique of not just the city but of Louisiana as a whole is almost a character entirely in and of itself. It addS a certain je ne sais quoi to the whole series that I like. Plus, y'know, French. *eyebrows*

I mentioned it in my review of Vespers but it bears repeating that these authors do a sensational job with these characters in all ways but particularly their voices. The story jumps between them frequently and not once was I ever confused about whose head I was in.

Thad's manner of speaking and being speaks to his age, wisdom and the church, which he's devoted most of his life to. I love all the pomp and circumstance of Catholicism and the authors know of Catholic guilt and they know it well. It permeates Thad. Persistently he grapples with his faith and his feelings for Sara.

Sara, on the other hand, oozes millennial from his speech to his attitude to his outlook. He persistently challenges Thad's beliefs with logic and he keeps him on his toes. Their interplay continues to be a source of amusement for me.

The authors have integrated relevant issues into the story that added authenticity without seeming preachy. This is a fairly diverse cast of characters who have entanglements with law enforcement, because they find themselves in pickle after pickle. Those run ins with the law added credibility and relevancy to the narrative, not to mention some discomfiture.

I'm not sure if there were just a million things going on for me personally, but it seemed like this started slower then gained more and more traction as it progressed. The last 40-50% I was on the edge of my seat and trying desperately to keep up with all the developments, which is my bread and butter. I like being challenged because it keeps me engaged and engaged I was. It was fun. Nohea kicks ass all over the place. Thad vamps out. Something freaky's happening with Sara. Eccentric twins. Explosions. Weird witchy things. FUN with a capital FUN!

Sara and Thad are an established couple at this point. Though they're still working the kinks out, so to speak. Their bond and connection is unwavering, but if you're interested in lots of sex, this isn't that book. Also, those that struggle with communication issues may lose patience. As a general rule, I don't have trouble when it comes to lies of omission between couples and for the most part I didn't here either. The pink elephant between Sara and Thad is burdensome and weighs heavily on Sara. As much as I wanted him to trust in Thad, I understood his fears and why he just couldn't.

As I mentioned at the start, there are so many questions left unanswered that I don't even know what to do with myself. I guess just wait like schlub for the next one to come out. Hopefully soon. *pleading eyes*

Recommend to UF and PNR romance fans.

Review: Bonfire (Hours of the Night, #1.5) by Irene Preston & Liv Rancourt

Silent night, holy hell.

Thaddeus and Sarasija are spending the holidays on the bayou, and while the vampire’s idea of Christmas cheer doesn't quite match his assistant’s, they’re working on a compromise. Before they can get the tree trimmed, they’re interrupted by the appearance of the feu follet. The ghostly lights appear in the swamp at random and lead even the locals astray.

When the townsfolk link the phenomenon to the return of their most reclusive neighbor, suspicion falls on Thaddeus. These lights aren't bringing glad tidings, and if Thad and Sara can't find their source, the feu follet might herald a holiday tragedy for the whole town.

Christmas on the Bayou, cher, with gators and some weird lights!

This little novella is set during the holidays but it's not too Christmasy for those averse like myself. It's the continuation of Sara and Thad's story and how they're growing closer. They are still a work in progress but they're getting there and this story only endeared the two of them further to me.

"I think, Sara, you could ask me to hang the Christmas star in the heavens, and I would find a way to accomplish the task."

There is an old legend on the bayou about the feu follet but when some strange things begin to happen with regularity the problem lands right on Thad's doorstep. Literally. Sara being Sara he insists that they get involved and figure out what's behind these freaky lights once and for all.

This one is set entirely at the bayou house which I liked. A lot. Lots of skiffs and pirogues and that accent. There's something about that setting that makes ordinarily bizarre and outlandish events seem possible, sinister even, or at least in my head it is. Mostly because of gators and swamps.

Not to worry. It isn't scary and Bonfire had a whole lot less religious overtones than what I would've imagined in comparison to Vespers. The message is a simple but powerful one and I really liked it. The authors struck a perfect balance between the mystery, some sexy times that were more romantic than kindle melting and the spirit of Christmas. The only thing that I'm still confused about is why the feu follet had no effect on Sara. Weird.

I wouldn't recommend Bonfire to anyone who hasn't already read Vespers. If you've not read Vespers, what are you waiting for? A gator to deliver it?

Actually a croc but I bet a gator could do it too!

Excerpt

Our bed.

The bed I would share with him as long as he’d have me. Though at times my inner conflict still raged, Sara was a sin I couldn’t help but commit.

For decades, I’d endeavored to restore my soul through service to the White Monks, and now I regularly engaged in acts that would destroy it.

I found I didn’t care, or at least not enough to leave off my relationship with Sara. Perhaps having lived so long granted me a new perspective, but the joy he brought now outweighed any future paradise.

We lay in bed, him on his side with me propped against his back. After dozing awhile, he rolled over and squinted at me. “You didn’t come.”

“No.” I rubbed his arm, and he settled under my touch.

“I think you get off on the self-denial.”

There was no good response to that.

I prayed for an hour, maybe two. I had missed Compline, and it would soon be time for Matins. Sara’s presence had required a number of accommodations, from the colored lights to the interruption of my prayers. Each a small step, insignificant maybe, leading me I knew not where. Here, in this second week of Advent, I should be readying my heart to greet the infant Christ.

Instead, I gloried in the warmth of Sara’s body next to mine.

The incongruity allowed restlessness to invade my contemplation. Simpler, really, to wonder about the here and now. Why had a man turned up on my front porch? He said he’d followed the lights, but despite the legends, witch lights were a simple phenomenon of the swamp.

If not magic, there must be a human agency. Setting aside my rosary, I left the bed, being careful not to disturb Sara. I knelt and said the prayers for Matins under my breath, then changed into some denim pants and a long-sleeved black shirt. I kept a pair of waterproof boots in the kitchen near the back door, so after a last look at my sleeping assistant and a promise to return in time for Lauds, I left the room.

The night was cool, and a thin layer of clouds wrapped around the moon. I strode across the damp earth, tuning my ear to the constant buzz of the peepers, the occasional hoot of an owl. My home was on a winding tributary of the Amite River. The deed claimed I owned some ten acres, though much of that was swamp. The land and the water were in a constant dance, splintering and shifting, small peninsulas forming islands when the river rose. Toward the back, though, was an old trail that had once led all the way to the outskirts of French Settlement. Though stretches had been overtaken by the swamp, I headed for that path.

I broke into a run, determined to return before Sara discovered I was missing. He would be dismayed, even angry, though I swore I’d share everything I’d found. I picked up my pace, scanning my surroundings for any unusual signs.

There.

A flash of light halted my progress. I left the path and skidded in the slick mud to the edge of another tributary, or maybe a pond, half-covered with water lilies. The light hovered between the cypress and tupelo trees, enticing me to follow. I dug my heels in, despite a growing urge to wade out into the algae-ridden water.

The sharp racket of an alligator’s warning call broke the compulsion, and I scrambled back to the path. I resolved to ignore the lights, for I was more intrigued by the source of the coercion. I had gone only a short distance when another light flashed, this one closer, and I found myself back at the edge of the water.

Merde. Anger spurred my resolve, and I returned to the path, though each step dragged as if the mud itself held me down. I reached the path but was unable to proceed. Something, some invisible barrier, prevented my forward progress. I headed away from the water, but the barrier held while, winking behind me, the witch light beckoned.

I persisted for some time, and though I sensed the barrier weakening, it did not give way. Finally, I abandoned my attempt, the fear that Sara would wake up alone outweighing the hold this mystery had on me. I might be in retreat, but I vowed to return and seek out this thing that disturbed our peace.

Review: Vespers (Hours of the Night #1) by Irene Preston & Liv Rancourt

Thaddeus Dupont has had over eighty years to forget…

The vampire spends his nights chanting the Liturgy of the Hours and ruthlessly disciplines those unnatural urges he's vowed never again to indulge. He is at the command of the White Monks, who summon him at will to destroy demons. In return, the monks provide for his sustenance and promise the return of his immortal soul.

Sarasija Mishra's most compelling job qualification might be his type O blood…

The 22-year-old college grad just moved across the country to work for some recluse he can't even find on the internet. Sounds sketchy, but the salary is awesome and he can't afford to be picky. On arrival he discovers a few details his contract neglected to mention, like the alligator-infested swamp, the demon attacks, and the nature of his employer's "special diet". A smart guy would leave, but after one look into Dupont's mesmerizing eyes, Sarasija can't seem to walk away. Too bad his boss expected "Sara" to be a girl.

Falling in love is hard at any age…

The vampire can't fight his hungers forever, especially since Sara's brought him light, laughter and a very masculine heat. After yielding to temptation, Thaddeus must make a choice. Killing demons may save his soul, but keeping the faith will cost him his heart.

Gothic romance Big Easy style, cher
There was even a gator!

"I would resign myself to an eternity in hell if it meant a single lifetime with him."

Vespers left an impression with its resplendent atmosphere. These authors blended romance and action in a Gothic setting, historical references and religious overtones thrown in for flavor and Voila! Tantalizing cocktail! That I cannot wait to order another of.

I'm not a religious person but I am fascinated by religion especially Catholicism mainly because it appeals to the history buff in me and the repression. Not gonna lie. All that repression and denial... when it overflows... magical fireworks. BUT this book isn't overwhelmingly religious. Thaddeus was training to be a monk when he was turned into a vampire and remains under contract to the White Monks to fight against the forces of evil and he takes his faith as seriously as his job of devout, vampire, monk, ninja fighting the demon hordes on his own in a futile effort to "save" his soul.

If you know anything about monks the word ascetic should come to mind. Thaddeus believes himself to be an abomination not solely because he requires blood to sustain himself but also because of his sexuality. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you look at it, these two needs are linked which is why he only hires female assistants until an honest mistake by his daylight agent, Nohea, brings Sara into his life.

"He was only a man who wanted a man- not the vampire or the monk, but the man at the heart of them both."

Sara is a force. Thaddeus is immediately attracted to him with Sara being slower to recognize what's happening between them. They have a connection and I don't just mean they click. In fact, more often than not they clash. Sara is twentysomething and Thaddeus is over 100. Sara is modern tech kid to Thaddeus' old world charm with actual books-the ones with covers. Sara is non-practicing Hindu to Thaddeus' devout Catholic. Sara is out and proud to Thaddeus's self-flagellating penance and daily prayers for his salvation. Yet despite all their differences love bubbles up and becomes preeminent. However, there is something otherworldly between them that defies logic. Is it kismet? Or something... more?

I'll tell you what else is otherworldly is the sudden influx of demons who seem hellbent on garnering Thaddeus's attention. Why the sudden interest is the mystery to be solved in this installment but there is no cliffhanger. There is minimal violence with an uptempo pace. There were times I thought the story dragged with one too many internet searches and arguments between Thaddeus and Sara over his restriction to the house but my quibbles were evanescent.

The level of sophistication in the construction of these characters, their voices and this story was truly superb. I never once questioned whose head I was in because they are that clearly defined. With dual perspectives I cannot overstate how much I respect distinctiveness. Sara's actions, thoughts and language are reflective of his age as are Thaddeus'.

Their relationship progression is subtle. It's skillfully developed throughout the story. They are never typical employer/employee and there is a definite power differential in more ways than one. While Thaddeus is extremely possessive and protective and maybe a little demanding, bossy and overbearing (a tiny bit. Really, it's nothing.) he doesn't discount Sara and there are playful moments interspersed throughout. The tension between them was the sweetest torture. I love all of these things because this is stuff of the aforementioned magical fireworks. Oh the dividends... passion, maybe a little desperate need and a bit of cosseting. I do so love a good cosset.

"Their shared pulse pounded through him. His body erupted in starbursts and lightning. And his soul found... communion."

Amen.

Definitely recommend and can't wait for the next one. I need more adventures and I'm curious how things will evolve after that final scene with Patrick and Micheal. Interesting stuff sure to make the road ahead... unpredictable.

Thanks so much to the gang at Boy Meets Boy Reviews for a chance to do a guest post on the blog. Irene and I are very excited to be telling everyone about our newly-released vampire story, Vespers.

Falling in love is hard at any age
…Especially if you happen to be a 115 year old vampire. Thaddeus Dupont was born in 1900, and for the first fourteen years of his life, he lived in a cabin on the Amite River in Louisiana. He grew up steeped in the legends of the bayou, the feu follet, the loup garou and rougarou, and the traiteurs. He learned to hunt and to fish, to tie nets, to dress game; all the skills he needed for survival.
When he was old enough, he was sent to St. Joseph’s Abbey to study for the priesthood. Though his mother claimed she didn’t have a favorite son, she recognized Thaddeus’s gift, and knew the Church would be the best place to nurture him.
For Thaddeus, the Church provided an answer to a much more disturbing problem. From a very young age, he’d recognized the inherent depravity in his most basic impulses. He desired other men in an unnatural way, but the discipline imposed by monastic life gave him the tools he needed to suppress those desires. He vowed to join the order as soon as he was deemed ready.
And then he ran across a vampire.
Awakening to his new life, at first he responded by indulging in every imaginable sin, deciding if he was going to burn in Hell, he may as well enjoy the trip. That period of debauchery lasted about ten years, until he was recruited by the White Monks, a demon-fighting branch of the Dominican order. Again, the discipline of the Church saved him, although he was left alone, isolated, a reclusive soul who filled his time with prayer.
And then…he met Sarasija Mishra.
Heat and honey. Crimson and coal. A haze of color and sound. The man—for it was a man—stood on the porch as if he had every right to be there. As if I didn’t care he’d interrupted Vespers, the evening chant that allowed me to greet him without breaking his foolish neck. As if I’d expected to find him, tall and proud and soft as a yearling buck.
I had no such expectation, and he had no right, and only the luck of the innocent kept me from breaking his neck on principle.
Sara is nothing like Thaddeus. He is young and well-educated, with a 21st century disregard for most things having to do with religion. He’s also out and proud, and has never been made to feel his sexuality is a problem. How these two find their way – while battling demons, both inner and the other kind – was a lot of fun to write, and hopefully it’ll be fun for you to read.
Vespers is the first story Irene and I have co-written, and as much as we’ve loved working on it, we’re that much happier to be sharing it with you. Keep reading for an excerpt, and make sure you enter our giveaway for a $25 gift card plus 7 (SEVEN!) paranormal romance ebooks, by authors like Alexis Hall, Jordan Castillo Price, and Claire Cray. Vespers Blurb

Thaddeus Dupont has had over eighty years to forget…

The vampire spends his nights chanting the Liturgy of the Hours and ruthlessly disciplines those unnatural urges he’s vowed never again to indulge. He is at the command of the White Monks, who summon him at will to destroy demons. In return, the monks provide for his sustenance and promise the return of his immortal soul.

Sarasija Mishra’s most compelling job qualification might be his type O blood…

The 22-year-old college grad just moved across the country to work for some recluse he can’t even find on the internet. Sounds sketchy, but the salary is awesome and he can’t afford to be picky.  On arrival he discovers a few details his contract neglected to mention, like the alligator-infested swamp, the demon attacks, and the nature of his employer’s “special diet”. A smart guy would leave, but after one look into Dupont’s mesmerizing eyes, Sarasija can’t seem to walk away. Too bad his boss expected “Sara” to be a girl.

Falling in love is hard at any age…

The vampire can’t fight his hungers forever, especially since Sara’s brought him light, laughter and a very masculine heat. After yielding to temptation, Thaddeus must make a choice.  Killing demons may save his soul, but keeping the faith will cost him his heart.

Vespers is a complete novel with no cliffhanger. It can be enjoyed as a standalone or read as the first book in the Hours of the Night series.

About Liv Rancourt
I write romance: m/f, m/m, and v/h, where the h is for human and the v is for vampire … or sometimes demon … I lean more towards funny than angst. When I’m not writing I take care of tiny premature babies or teenagers, depending on whether I’m at home or at work. My husband is a soul of patience, my dog’s cuteness is legendary, and we share the homestead with three ferrets. Who steal things. Because they’re brats.

Excerpt

Perversion. The word warred for attention with the sight of the scars. How hurt did a vampire have to be before he didn’t heal completely? Then the pressure of Dupont’s mouth on his overrode both thoughts. Sara opened his mouth and sighed as Dupont’s tongue took possession. He could worry later. They were both alive now. Better than alive.
He angled his head and arched into Dupont. He hadn’t expected the shrimp discussion to yield such immediate results. Or maybe, as usual, he had no idea what was going on inside Dupont’s head. Having an intermittent live feed on the man’s emotions was less helpful than one might think, especially since Sara still hadn’t gotten a firm handle on which of them was broadcasting what at any given time.
He kept his eyes closed, avoiding Dupont’s gaze. He slid their tongues together, trying to remember why he had been worried about coming in here. They hadn’t talked about sleeping arrangements. The door hadn’t been locked, though. And after yesterday…
Dupont shifted his hips so more than their tongues could get friendly.
Talking could wait. When he had climbed into bed with Dupont, he had stupidly left on his boxers, and now they were hindering full appreciation of the moment.
And maybe they were on the same wavelength right now. Dupont had his thumbs under the waistband, and Sara lifted his hips and squirmed out. Dupont pushed them aside so they were skin to skin. Sara ran his hands along the vampire’s arms, over his back, into his hair.
He would never mistake the feel of the man in his arms for anyone else. Dupont’s body, not yet warm after his day sleep, slid along his like cool satin. Shouldn’t be a turn-on. But should had nothing to do with it. Sara’s skin burned in all the places they touched. He wrapped his legs around Dupont and held him closer, more than willing to warm him up.
The arms around him tightened. Vampire arms, strong enough to crush the life from his body. Their hold was reverent, as if he were something precious. Dupont’s mouth left his to trail kisses over his cheek, his temples, his eyes, each touch a tiny benediction. Cool kisses on burning skin. He didn’t need or deserve adoration. He was only a man who wanted a man—not the vampire or the monk, but the man at the heart of them both.
As if reading his thoughts, a cool hand cupped his hip, then slid around his thigh, lighting fires in its wake until he burned with need. Dupont’s finger circled his hole and ripped away the last of his restraint. He moaned, aware of two things. They weren’t nearly close enough, and he was going to combust when Dupont got inside him. He pulled his legs in closer to his chest and bucked against Dupont, hoping to inspire some urgency.
Dupont took his time, as focused and deliberate in this as in everything else. His kisses wandered lower, grazing along Sara’s jaw, nipping at his ear, sucking on his neck.
Sara angled his head to offer better access. Finally. The biting had been amazing. They could do that again, no problem. Instead, Dupont moved lower, sucking on Sara’s nipples and sending zaps of sensation straight to his dick, maddeningly trapped between their bodies.
It seemed he’d spent an eternity in a haze of need before Dupont was poised over him again.
Then, without warning, everything went sideways.
“Tell me to stop.”
The words didn’t make any sense, but the stillness in Dupont’s body did.
Sara’s eyes flew open, meeting Dupont’s. The conduit opened, and he fell into the storm.
“Tell me to stop.” Far away, the words came again, whispering through the power of the vampire’s gaze.
Sara stared at Dupont, angry he would use his power now. Like the leaking emotions, Sara had never figured out why the whammy worked sometimes and not others, but he doubted he could resist a determined effort when they were this connected. He gathered his own will anyway, ready to fight the command…until he realized he didn’t have to. They were just words. Weak, insubstantial words, struggling to find their way through the waves of need cresting on the real power. He smiled. “Not a chance in hell.”
Dupont’s eyes closed. Breathing heavily, he rested his forehead against Sara’s. “I am unprepared, and I would not hurt you more than I can help. Let this be our salv—”
“Nah,” Sara managed. He tried for cool, but his voice came out so breathy, he’d have to rely on Dupont’s supernatural hearing. “I was a Boy Scout.”
He reached back awkwardly and fumbled on the table next to the bed. The shorts had been a cop-out, but he hadn’t been stupid enough to come into this bare little room again without lube.
Dupont seemed like he still might be gearing up for second thoughts. Sara wrapped his arms around him and rolled. Coming to his knees over Dupont, he flipped open the bottle and slicked up his fingers. When he met Dupont’s eyes, a big wave of shy hit him. Lots of guys got off on watching their partner prepare themselves. Of course, lots of guys weren’t hundred-year-old monks. He bit his lip, still committed, yet suddenly too self-conscious to reach around and oil his own ass. But, hey, with the beauty of lube, application wasn’t specific to Slot A or Tab B. He scooted backward until he straddled Dupont’s thighs instead of his hips.
Dupont didn’t make any move of encouragement, lying vampire-still beneath him. Stubborn as usual. Iron will sounded hot in genre fiction but was a pain in the ass in real life.
It wasn’t as if Dupont wasn’t turned on, too. Evidence to the contrary bobbed between them, daring Sara to test Dupont’s resolve.
Dupont himself looked hot as hell, laid out naked on the narrow-ass bed under Sara. His skin was moonlight and shadow, a Frenchman’s version of vampire pale. His lips were swollen from their kisses, and a dark flush stained his cheeks.
He looked carnal, and wicked, and nothing like a man too holy to fuck. Despite the stillness of his body, lightning still sparked in his inhuman eyes. Sara met his gaze deliberately as his hand took Dupont’s shaft in a firm, sure downstroke.
Merde.” Dupont arched off the bed.
Oh God, so hot. The power to make Dupont respond, the look on his face…
He slicked his thumb across the head of Dupont’s cock, and Dupont clutched at the sheets. Iron will. Sara grinned. If Dupont tried to whammy him now, he bet it wouldn’t be to make him stop.
Before he could finish the thought, Dupont’s hands were on his arms, pulling him roughly forward. He forgot about whammies and iron will as their mouths met again. Kisses, even Dupont’s, weren’t enough now. He could feel what they both needed behind him, hard and slick and already so close. A little help would be nice, but not necessary. Dupont didn’t need to stress himself, Sara could take care of this for them both. He adjusted his body and impaled himself on Dupont.
The universe went still for one white-hot second. Dupont’s eyes were wide, startled, then the lightning struck.
Combustion.
Dupont was everywhere, between his thighs, in his body, in his head. He was open, invaded, possessed. Hands on his hips set the rhythm, as Dupont drove into him. Concepts of his and mine became meaningless. There was no separation. No Sara. No Dupont. Only the storm, building to an inevitable peak.
They had moved. Sara couldn’t tell how, only that somehow they still had one more barrier to breach. Lips grazed his neck. A final penetration, then even their hearts beat as one. Their shared pulse pounded through him. His body erupted in starbursts and lightning. And his soul found…communion.
