Review: Lover Behind Enemy Lines (Dreamcatchers #3) by Liv Olteano

True mates, together at last.

Claw—fearless leader of Seattle’s Team 32—has faced many dangers during more than a century and a half as a dreamcatcher. Yet nothing has ever scared him more than his obsession with Nathan Gallagher. Tormented by visions and dreams about the man ever since he first laid eyes on him, Claw now has to deal with living under the same roof with the object of his most ardent desires. And Nathan is so much more than a simple crush.

Brother of the caster who’s been plaguing Team 32’s area and less-than-willing houseguest of the team after a strange break-in attempt, Nathan may hold the key to finally apprehending his sister and putting a stop to the havoc she’s wreaking on Queen Anne…. Meanwhile, Nathan’s wreaking some havoc of his own on Claw’s heart.

I’ve been waiting for this story forever or at least it seems that long. There were so many hints in Taka’s book that I needed this story! Nathan Gallagher is the brother of Vivian, a ley line witch who is basically at war with Team 32 of the Dreamcatchers and namely, Claw who has had a pull toward Nathan for some time now. In the last book, we know Nathan broke into the home of Team 32 and is now handcuffed to the wall as their prisoner until they figure out what to do with him.

We know what Claw wants to do with him. And this being in Claw’s POV, we are privy to his thoughts but Claw wants to understand why he feels so drawn to Nathan and not just the physical side of it all. What’s interesting to find out is Claw believes that Nathan might be the reincarnated soul of his first love some 100+ years ago…
All of it led to this […] Entire lives of seemingly random steps and disconnected choices, all of it was a path to this point.
I have said it many times and I will say it again, fated/soul/true mates or whatever you want to call it turns my crank in romance. The simple idea that this person, even if they are your enemy is MADE FOR YOU and ONLY YOU gets my hopeless romantic heart beating at a frantic pace. Knowing this match between Claw and Nathan could go back a century and includes reincarnation just turned my interest in the story higher and higher.

Anyway, Nathan is prisoner and Claw wants to find out why he broke into the house. Aashi sees that Claw is troubled and he tells her he wants to find out if Nathan is the reincarnated soul of his first love. When Aashi gives him a special powder to do so, Nathan tells Claw he can use the powder but he wants first out of the handcuffs and second, wants to perform a spell on them both that will allow the other to see if they are lying. The spell, Napeva’s Tooth, gives the liar a toothache feeling and a red band forms on their wrist to show the lie. Claw is prepared to do so because if he does, Nathan will tell him why he broke in and what he knows about his sister. There is a counter spell to Napeva’s Tooth called Napeva’s Mercy and it will break the truth spell but must be performed once for every lie told. Wow. Talk about a reason not to lie, right?

The chemistry was great between Nathan and Claw and I really liked how Nathan openly flirted with is captor. Though Claw doesn’t see himself that way and is such a gentleman he would never force himself on Nathan you feel the attraction and if you’re like me, wanted Claw to take Nathan up on all his offers including ones with the handcuffs. But Claw, while he wants to give into this attraction to Nathan, knowing Nathan’s reincarnated soul makes him feel as if he is betraying his first love. Sigh. Noble men and their gentle hearts will get me every time.

I really liked Nathan. Getting his back story about his sister, about the powers she has and what used to be done to children like her was really melancholy. He had a great connection with his sister and the way their powers fed off the other but when she disappeared, Nathan had to find other ways to cope and finding Vivian again, he didn’t find the same sister he lost. Vivian is power hungry and growing up on her own without the steady teaching of other ley line witches, she is corrupt and Nathan wants to help Team 32 in any way to stop what she is doing, as long as she doesn’t get hurt.
“[…] There’s a strong connection between your life forces. I can’t imagine that two souls connected like that would ever be able to turn against each other.”
“You’re saying I won’t turn against him, either. No matter what.”
Oh but this was a good one. There is a lot that I want to say, but it would totally spoil the book. Just know that everything you think you know even as you are reading the story, isn’t all of it. This book is so layered with the magic of both witches and Dreamcatchers that it was almost hard to keep up if I wasn’t so glued to the page. I really loved where this went for the entire Team 32 and really where Nathan and Claw end up. I always get a kick out of Aashi and her playful but stern way with her soldiers and her feelings about Nathan were powerful.

I am pretty sure this is the last in the series as we have each member of Team 32 paired with the fated love of their life. Drew and Angelo, Take and Ginger and now Nathan and Claw. Not one of the three have had it easy but finding their mates lessens the burden of being a Dreamcatcher and protected the innocent. This series was a fun read with great world building and the perfect romantic/paranormal balance that is exactly what the Dreamspun Beyond line is all about.

The Shoot

The rhythmic snap of his camera taking photos was hypnotizing.
Well, to be honest, I’d been pretty hypnotized as soon as I’d walked up to him for this shoot. His short-cropped black hair and the burning black eyes took my breath away. I was thrilled to know I would get his undivided attention, even if it only lasted as long as this shoot would.
I wanted to look at him again. To see those wide shoulders tilt and his muscles flex as he aimed his camera at me. But I couldn’t see him. My eyes were closed, and all I could go by was my imagination. And boy, was it firing away right now.
*snap* *snap* *snap*
I could picture him standing in front of me, that tall and perfectly sculpted body full of tension. He would be hard without me even touching him. That hot gaze would be fixed on me as I’d lick my lips. His hooded eyes would close all the way as I’d take him in my wet and hungry mouth. I could almost hear him moan as –
“Tilt your head to the side a bit more.”
God, that voice...it sent shivers down my spine. Good thing I was sitting down and my jacket was long enough to cover the boner.
I could almost taste him on the tip of my tongue. I could almost feel him slipping through my lips, stretching them with his girth. The warmth of the sun hitting my face transformed in the warmth radiated by his muscular thighs, as I’d be kneeling in front of him. The delicate caress of rose petals against my cheek became the whisper of a touch from his fingertips, as he’d try his best to hold back and not grab my head to properly fuck my mouth. My dick throbbed.
“Whatever you’re thinking about, keep doing it.”
*snap* *snap* *snap*
He’d hiss “Keep doing it” as I’d take him deep. I’d be starved for his cum, moaning as I take him in – imagining the rich load he’d reward me with.
My heart was pounding. I swallowed convulsively as I imagined him spurting down my throat. My mouth went dry. I wanted to lick my lips, but it would ruin the shot.
*snap* *snap* *snap*
“Perfect. We’re done.”
God, no! Not yet. I opened my eyes.
He was standing in front of me, reaching down. “Need a hand?”
I cleared my throat as I accepted his help. “Thanks.”
“Is that a yes on the hand, then?” He grinned, his gaze going way hotter than I could handle right now.
“Excuse me?”
He stared pointedly at my crotch. Then he looked back into my eyes. “Yes or no?”
“Please, yes,” I whispered.
He was still holding my hand as he led me to the break room.
“After you.”
I got in, as instructed, and he followed. The lock clicked shut after he closed the door.
I turned to stare into his eyes as I slowly got down to my knees. “No, after you.”

Excerpt

“Nathan stirred on the bed, and as he opened his eyes, his eyelashes fluttered. They were blond and long, mostly visible through the shadows they cast on his cheekbones. His eyes were a very dark brown, though; as dark as night, full of doubt and mistrust, but also holding some tantalizing secret that refused to make itself known to me despite my attempts to uncover it. Nathan stirred my interest in so many ways that it was getting very scary very fast.

I sat on the chair next to the bed. “Hey. I thought I should bring you something to eat.”

“What the hell is wrong with you?” he asked and squinted.

“What do you mean?”

“I broke into your house, pitiful as it went. You were all pissed. Okay, I get the point: I won’t break into this house again.”

“Well, at least you learned that lesson.”

“I did, okay? I did. But why are you keeping me handcuffed to a bed now? Do you run some human trafficking ring?”

“Why did you break in?”

This was familiar ground. I’d asked that question a lot of times since he was here. He had yet to give me a believable answer.

As expected, he pouted and looked away. His gaze landed on the plate I’d brought. “Can you at least free one of my hands so I can eat like a normal person?”

I sighed and got the fork out of the nightstand drawer where I’d stashed it. “Because that went so well the last time.”

“You’re not feeding me again. I’m not your fucking pet.”

“Of course not. I wouldn’t handcuff a pet.”

“Screw you,” he muttered.

“I wouldn’t do that to a pet, either. And I’d advise against waking everyone up. They won’t like the fact that I’m feeding you the leftovers they were no doubt planning to devour later on. Now, are you hungry or not?”

His light cheeks colored a delicious rusty shade. “I’d rather you just killed me already than humiliate me like this.”

I sat back in the chair. “We don’t kill people, Nathan. Surely you know that.”

“No, I don’t know; in fact, I don’t know much of anything except that you have an obvious boner for handcuffs.”

I didn’t. I did have a boner for him, but I disliked seeing him cuffed to the bed. Unfortunately, it was how things had to be for the moment. And Nathan refused to help me help him out of the situation.

“Again with that?” I sighed heavily. “You broke into our house. You have to know who we are.”

“Well, I know next to nothing about you people.”

“You knew something before deciding on this house.”

“You only think that because you know who I am,” he hissed.

“And what a coincidence it was, then, that you—who knew nothing about us—broke into this home, where we—who know things about you—live. Call me crazy, but I think it just seems far-fetched.”

He looked away, and silence fell over us like a thick blanket. It was almost smothering for me. If he kept this up, Aashi would lose her patience and cast the forgetting spell on him. He’d lose track of ever seeing either of us. And I’d lose my chance to get through to him. If that happened, I felt sure that sooner or later I’d follow him. Why I was so sure, I couldn’t really understand. But it was an unshakable and terrifying truth. If he refused to see things our way, then that had to mean he was on his sister’s side and maybe even working for her. And if the side he’d choose was his sister’s, then I would follow in that direction too, sooner or later. If that meant I’d cross to his sister’s side, as detestable a thought as it was, then I would eventually do it. Being around Nathan was that much of a necessity already.

Decades of longing and regret were weighing down on me, and they would keep on doing so until I’d lose it. I knew for sure that this was my second and last chance at making things right between what I saw in Nathan’s eyes and my own heart. But he knew nothing about me. He remembered and felt nothing. This was part of my torment.

His eyes haunted my dreams and my waking hours since I’d first glanced into them, what felt like a lifetime ago, back in Denny Park. Drew and I had followed him due to one of Drew’s infamous though usually on-point gut feelings. It was how we’d identified the caster we were dealing with—obviously Nathan’s sister, considering how much they resembled each other.

I knew a lot about the man lying on a bed before me. He was Nathan Gallagher, son of an influential family of ley line witches that was part of the strongest coven of Seattle. Despite his pedigree, in witch circles he had a reputation for avoiding the practice of magic like the pest. He had a sister, Vivian Gallagher, who had been reported missing as a child. Our caster lady had to be precisely that sister. That was one more thing we needed him to tell us about, in fact. That and why he’d decided to break into our house.

I knew the story of Nathan Gallagher’s life as Taka could piece it together from his research. But when I looked into his eyes, it wasn’t Nathan Gallagher that stared back at me. His eyes, windows to his soul, told me he was someone else. When our gazes met, I wasn’t in the here and now anymore. I went back to the sound of water gurgling down rocks and wind whistling through trees; to the sound of laughter, to skinny-dipping in crystal clear waters while everything inside us seemed murky but exciting. When I looked into his eyes, I saw my sweet and so terrible first love, and felt the pang of more than a century-and-a-half-worth of longing.

“Look at me,” I said in as terse a tone as I could so I wouldn’t betray my emotions.

He turned his face back in my direction, though it took him a couple of seconds to find my gaze with his.

“Let me feed you. I assure you I see absolutely no humiliation in it.”

His gaze scanned my face. I wished he’d be reassured by the sincerity in my heart. It was a joy and privilege for me to feed him, in fact; it would never be a way to belittle him, regardless of circumstances. But I couldn’t tell him that. I knew he’d think I was crazy, and that I really couldn’t afford—even if the thought crossed my mind more often than not of late.

“Is this some elaborate scheme to gain my trust? Do you guys think the good cop/bad cop routine is going to get better results than just asking? Because it won’t.”

“You are not my enemy, Nathan.”

“Well, I’m your prisoner, so you are my enemy.”

“Fine, then. See me as an enemy, if you so desire. But please eat.”

He looked at the plate again, this time with a tint of suspicion. “Is it drugged?”

I used my fingers to grab some bits of cold turkey and carrot salad and stuffed them in my mouth. After swallowing, I wiped my hand on one of the napkins stashed under the plate. “Happy now?”

“Delirious.” He huffed and rolled his eyes. “Maybe you drugged just some bits, though.”

“Think of it this way: if the food is drugged, then you’ll be aware of less time spent here.”

“Encouraging thought,” he deadpanned. “And then you can cheerfully rape me, because I’m so out of it. Don’t think I don’t see how you look at me, buddy.”

I widened my eyes. “Rape you? Dear spirits and heavens, I would never.”

“I bet that’s what all rapists say.”

“And how could I prove to you that I wouldn’t do such a thing?”

“You could uncuff me,” he said, shrugging a little.

I smiled. “Nice try.”

“It was worth a shot. So you’re sure you don’t want to rape me?”

“I’m positive.”

“Bummer,” he muttered. “Sex would have given me something nice to do to pass the time, at least. It wouldn’t be rape, though.” He waggled his eyebrows.

“So you actually enjoy handcuffs,” I concluded.

“Not necessarily. But I’d enjoy you.” He looked at the plate for a moment, then back at me. “That stuff smells torturously good.”

“Are you asking me to feed you, then?”

“Of course not. You keep me handcuffed to a bed and refuse to make the most of it, so I won’t humiliate myself by asking you to feed me next. But if you felt so inclined to get some of the food close enough to my mouth, it wouldn’t go to waste. That’s all I’m saying.”

So I did just that. He ate everything I’d brought up. When he was done, I wiped his mouth—to his mortification, if his expression was anything to go by. It wasn’t really necessary to wipe his mouth, I had to admit; that one I did purely to indulge myself. ”

“It was broad daylight when I walked into club Zee, but as soon as I got inside, darkness embraced me.

It was rehearsal time for many of the dancers, and the bar was open. During the day you could go in, have your drinks, and watch some rehearsals—all without an entrance fee. Dancers didn’t wear their flamboyant outfits for rehearsal, though since some of them wore considerably less clothing, one might say it was an even better sight. The single- and two-dancer-wide mini stages sprinkled all through the tall and semidark room were black, and so were the floors. Laser lights glided down the dancers’ bodies at night. During rehearsal they had modest colorful lights moving about now and then. There was something more playful than sensual about the mood during the day, and I liked that better.

I also rarely had the time to stop by during the night, considering my “working hours” as a dreamcatcher. Hunting spaga—our enemies—was a nighttime job, since they attacked people in their sleep to steal away their life force and induce nightmares in the process. Our fierce spirit guide Asibikaashi—the Spider Woman and Spirit Mother we lovingly called Aashi for short—asked we be ready to go out on mission from about ten in the evening to close to sunup. Having a curfew after more than six decades of service might have seemed embarrassing, but since I was a long-lived man that looked barely a day older than forty, I kept my ego in check. Some embarrassments you got used to. Like living with my teammates: Claw, our team leader and the oldest dreamcatcher I knew personally; Drew, the annoying one of our two new team members and the muscle of our team; and Drew’s mate and strangely all-around nice guy, Angelo. We were Team 32, operating in the Queen Anne area of Seattle. Regular people couldn’t know about us, or it would make them likelier targets for the spaga. Hanging around people made them likelier targets too. It was best for everyone for us to keep as much distance as we could. But visiting club Zee was a habit I couldn’t shake. In my mind, I made up for it by casting spider magic–fueled protections on the club and people here. As I knew pretty well after all my years of dreamcatcher service, there was no such thing as a perfect shield or protection against the spaga. The reason they chose sleepers as targets was that they were more vulnerable then, but there was no such thing as impenetrable security regardless of circumstances.

Club Zee was pretty popular during the day, and more so at night. Though at night there was pulsing, throbbing, bang-your-brains-out music, during the day the DJ played a different kind of tune. The soft notes of a rock ballad poured out from the speakers, giving the dancers who were practicing a sort of languorousness to their movements. The slower pace made every muscle of their bodies stand out as they moved.

My gaze sought him out before I could stop it. He was never hard to spot. His russet hair, coupled with the soft glow of the spotlight aimed at him, made the sweat on his body look like honey dripping down the corded sinew. For some inexplicable reason, he whipped his head around as if my stare had poked him in the ribs. His gaze shot to mine over the floor, locating me with laser-like precision despite the light and dark effects in the club. I could see the corner of his lips tilting up slowly. It was a lazy, provocative grin that spoke of satisfaction at the attention I couldn’t stop giving him each time I stopped by. He tilted his chin ever so slightly upward and moved his hips with the kind of smoothness that only a serpent should possess. No creature with bones in their body should be able to wiggle like that. This guy would be the death of me, I was pretty sure.

It took a considerable conscious effort to look at anything but him. A fan of self-discipline, I put in that effort and looked away.

I could sense Ginger’s gaze following me as I moved across the floor. I felt it like sticky, warm fingers constantly rubbing over my skin. No matter how long he’d practice from this point on, I knew his gaze would be aimed at me. His focus was a missile that ignited my awareness and arousal, even from this far away. My loins throbbed almost painfully.

If I were a poet or a bard, I might write poems and songs about all the things that simply laying eyes on him did to me. But though I appreciated poetry and music, Ginger’s effect on me had to be kept a secret—from him, first and foremost. In the little hours of morning, after a mission was done but before sleep would take over, I could lie in my bed and contemplate at leisure the sea of desire for and thoughts of him that I nearly drowned in every day; I could examine how that sea eroded away my will to not have him, and how my longing for him grew deeper and more tormenting with each grain of sand lost. Wave after wave of fantasies tormented me. Dreams of what could be but wouldn’t almost pulled me under. If anything, seeing him helped me keep my head on straight—while I was in his presence, that was. As soon as I was without it, I felt adrift in dark waters, shaken by cruel and relentless storms. ”

Review: Star-Crossed Lover (Dreamcatchers #2) by Liv Olteano

A love worth crossing the stars for.

Taka has been a dreamcatcher and part of Team 32 for over six decades, but nobody has tempted him like Ginger—a dancer at club Zee. Too bad dreamcatchers aren't allowed to have meaningful relationships with regular people. His willpower proves a finite resource, though, when a mission at the club means spending much more time around Ginger.

Ginger’s infatuation with Taka is unwavering. When he proves to have some paranormal skills of his own, he earns himself a place on the team—if he wants it. His decision will change his life—not to mention Taka’s—irrevocably.

But living in the now could prove an issue for a man who has as much history as Taka. Can Ginger’s determination help him make his way into Taka’s heart?

This is the second book in the Dreamcatcher’s series and I to recommend you read the first to get a handle on the folklore and all the players involved. Okay? Right then. I am not going to hash over all the details from the first book and just dive right in because this book was good. Like Joey from Friends liking Rachel’s English trifle good.
My whole life had been a map to this moment. Every breath I had ever taken had been meant to steer me to this: to him in my arms.
Having met Taka before, we know the man, who fought in World War II and had his family murdered by spaga, is a force to be reckoned with. Taka lives the true life or a warrior, one of a solitary life that always has intense longing underneath. The man is fierce but lonely and the man is terrified to love anyone again after having everything and everyone he’s ever loved taken from him by the evil he now swears to fight. But Taka is soon to be up against something so strong, even he or the all-powerful Aashi couldn’t have seen coming; a ginger stripper with a heart of gold and the spirit of a dreamcatcher.

Oh yeah.

I love that Taka has been spending his non-working hours just hanging out at club Zee to watch the eye candy, known as Ginger, dance around in next to nothing clothing. The flirting between these two was fun and playful yet always with an undertone of serious want that was palpable. You know Taka wants Ginger, but is holding back thinking he can’t be involved with a human. It’s beyond obvious that Ginger wants in Taka’s pants and then to crawl inside the man’s heart and remain there forever. It’s only when Aashi basically demands that Taka hang out more at the club to see why it’s a spaga magnet and ley line hotspot that we get a chance to let these two bless us all with the UST and a payoff.

Getting more of Taka’s backstory was of course heartbreaking and yet I loved reading it to see how he met Claw. Those two friends and fighters have been in each other’s lives for years and the trust and care they show one another is beautiful. So it makes sense that when Claw becomes worried and fixated on one person, Nathan Gallagher, who is related to the caster they want to catch and think is responsible for creating the new spaga; it would be Taka’s task to worry about his friend. But… BUT! OMG! Nathan Gallagher is going to be more than just the person Claw is fixated on and the next book, is going to be so good!

Sorry. Got sidetracked there.

Anyway.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the take on star crossed lovers and how it’s taken this long for Ginger and Taka to find one another. The lore of the dreamcatchers is such a rich tale and we get more in depth with it while learning about fated mates/star crossed lovers. I dug Ginger’s weapon and gifts and can’t wait to see him take on more missions and become a stronger warrior.

Now, while this book was a fun read, I am a bit baffled to the ending. I know there is another book after this but the ending is so abrupt… it left me hanging. Not even in a cliffhanger way, but more of a flipping the pages to see if I missed something. It just ends. That’s it.

But other than that, this is a great addition to the series and the line. I am ready for the next book.

Exclusive Excerpt:

“I want to kiss you,” I whispered, staring at his lips.
They were plump and inviting, and I really, really wanted to touch them with my lips and tongue. I wanted to taste him again, to taste the coffee on his lips, the bittersweetness of meeting again. And above all else, I wanted to keep him safe. To be by his side, if possible, and assure his safety. Maybe try to cater to his every whim, too, if he’d let me. God, I wanted him back so badly it was eating a canyon into my heart.
“Don’t play with me,” he whispered, and leaned in.
“I’m not.”
“What if I can’t believe a single word coming out of your mouth?”
“Then don’t listen to my words. Listen to what my body tells you.” I picked up his hand and settled his open palm over my chest. “Feel how fast it’s beating because I’m this close to you. Could it lie, you think?”
He bit his lower lip. “Maybe not. But it might be telling me something different than what you’d have me believe.”
“Give it a chance to tell you anything. Give me another chance.”
“You’re a horrible person.”
“I am.”
“You broke my heart.”
“I know. If it’s any consolation, I also broke my own in the process.”
“I’m dying to feel your lips against mine again,” he murmured, and leaned in all the way.”

“I put the phone back in my pocket and looked toward the bed. The victim stirred beneath the covers. I knew they were supposed to be sound asleep, but I held my breath nonetheless. It was really weird to stand and look at someone who was sleeping—I felt a bit creepy. The person had to be turning on the other side or something, but then the head poked up. The bedroom windows were positioned so the light from the street hit his face—because I saw clearly it was a man. He blinked a few times and looked at me, his face slack from sleep and probably the shock of staring at someone standing in his bedroom. He had hazel eyes and dark brown hair, and his skin looked just as deliciously tan as I remembered it. His face had changed a bit. The angles were sharper and the lines more prominent. He looked more grown-up somehow. But it was him, without a doubt: Angelo, my first real steady man. The one that got away—well, more accurately, the one I’d walked out on five years ago. Even if he could see me, the red charm still being active, he was supposed to go right back to sleep. If he’d remember anything at all, he’d be convinced it was a dream.

“Drew? Is that you?”

My heart skipped a beat or five. He was most definitely not going back to sleep. He was freaking talking to me! I panicked and quickly swallowed the green charm. I found myself immediately back at our home base, in the webs room, my heart pounding like hell.

Claw poked his head into the room. “Hey, man. Back already?”

I stared at his long, straight black hair, at his black eyes. I’d had a bit of a crush on Claw when I first met him. Something about his dark skin had always reminded me of Angelo’s permanent tan. But Claw’s black eyes with their intense, brooding gaze had never been like Angelo’s glimmering hazel ones. I felt my stomach tighten. Just thinking about his name did things to me, all these years later. I was such a huge moron—they had to invent a whole new league just for me.

“Come into the kitchen,” Claw said. “We’ve got a bit of a celebration going on here. You finally popped your dreamcatcher cherry after all.”

I smiled while my pulse spiked. Oh, crap. Way to end my very first mission—I hadn’t done the cleansing. I’d panicked and fled, without doing the cleansing. Goddamn it! For tonight, having used my red charm there would keep the home shielded. But without the cleansing it would be a beacon to all spaga, calling their attention to the premises and the residents, starting next nightfall. I had to get back there before that. No way was I going to tell Claw I’d screwed up on my first ever mission. No way. I just had to hope Aashi wouldn’t think to check up on my work. She didn’t, usually—at least as far as I knew. I could fix this.

I went into the kitchen where Claw and our other teammate, Taka, were holding up glasses of champagne. I took mine and we toasted to me not being the junior anymore. We didn’t hang around too much after that, going to our rooms instead. Claw had to attend the daily dreamcatcher leaders meeting for the Seattle area. Taka probably went back to his room to read—he was always reading, it seemed to me. And I just went to my room, hoping that the excitement would wind down and I’d be able to sleep.

It took a while. I kept thinking about five years back. I kept remembering nights spent with Angelo, and the sweet mornings after. All the things I now yearned for, and from which I’d run away then. I’d been dealing with a lot of confusion at the time. I hadn’t been able to find my center, and the steady connection between us had only made me feel more off-kilter when it came to everything else. I’d needed to sort myself out. So I walked out on him and tried to do just that.

It seemed to me that before shaking shit off and figuring yourself out, you had to get piles of shit a mile high weighing you down so you’d have the proper incentive. So I’d worked on my pile until it was nice and large. And then I’d shaken it off and figured out who the hell I was and what I wanted from life. Sad thing was, in my rare moments of honesty, I knew part of what I wanted was what I’d had with Angelo.

The look in his eyes tonight kept overlapping with the look in his eyes the day I’d moved out. It had hurt to walk out that day. I could imagine how it must’ve hurt him to see me do it. I had to make amends somehow. I had to keep him safe.

I finally fell asleep with the image of his hazel eyes running through my mind over and over again.

I have a thing for books with fated mates or anything resembling that. I love the idea that there is simply one person out there that is made for you and no matter what you do, you HAVE to be with them. The want, the need and yeah even the insta love does it for me and with this story, we have the Native American legend of twin souls.

We meet Drew, the youngest member of Team 32 - a team of dreamcatchers - as he is going about his day being hanging around the shared house with his teammates waiting for the moment he gets his first assignment. When the moment comes, Drew is sent to protect a human who is being targeted by a spaga… lets get this out there real quick. Spaga are magically created creatures who “sneak into unsuspecting sleeping victims’ homes at night, giving them nightmares to get them agitated and steal their life force. It’s Drew’s job as a dreamcatcher to keep the human and their dreams safe. But this time, this very first mission of Drew’s leads him to the man he walked away from five years ago, the love of his life, Angelo. Momentarily distracted by the sight of Angelo, Drew fumbles his job, with a three second eye-to-eye moment with Angelo and takes his magic pill back home.

I love that this all happened in the first chapter and that we get Drew’s inner dialogue of lament about leaving Angelo. We get the why of it and we get some serious feels. I love second chance romances and I couldn't wait to see how Drew would try to reconnect with Angelo knowing they are now in the same city.

The re-meet cute was adorable even though we have a wary Angelo of Drew after their history, but he can’t seem to help himself and allows Drew to meet him where he works so they can talk. The chemistry with these two was instant and palpable; you could feel the pull they had to one another. The chemistry is so important as it gives that feeling, that pull which allowed the quick decisions made about their romance to be believed and everything that happens after.

I appreciated the take on the Native American legend of the dreamcatchers. How their “boss” Aashi, who is technically a spider, is the one who sends them out on missions and how each dreamcatcher is recruited to become a soldier of the ancestors. I loved the take on twin souls and how rare Drew and Angelo are, to be not only twin souls, but have the life force to also be dreamcatchers and together, they will be a force to be reckoned with.

Sure, the forgiving and falling back in love was fast and simply with Drew and Angelo, but they are twin souls, so it’s not a problem for me at all. I liked them together, I liked how they wanted to protect one another even before Angelo learns about the world Drew lives in. I loved how Angelo accepts who Drew fully is and the reason for his decision.

The story was fun and fluffy, just as a Dreamspun Beyond book should be. It was full of the paranormal with a twist and the romance that made me grin.
