Blog Tour & Giveaway: Enduring Night by John Wiltshire

The awesome John Wilshire is here and he's talking about a couple of our favorite guys, Ben & Nik!

Cover & Blurb:
You’d have thought that Ben and Nikolas would have learnt that their romantic holidays inevitably end up as disasters. A short break on the polar ice sees them trapped in a nightmare of murder and deceit. Neither of them, however, foresees the long-term impact that endless winter has on their relationship. They return with a metaphorical darkness that threatens everything they have created together. Desperate and fearing for Nikolas’s life, Ben makes a bargain with a surprising ally. For the first time, Nikolas meets an enemy more powerful than he is. But fortunately, not as sneaky…

Excerpt:
Prologue
The view from the window hadn’t changed since the last time Ben had studied it—one grey, depressing wing of the building, the car park below, and some scraggly trees, still bare in January. Farther away, he could see the roofs of some houses, and perhaps, if he let his imagination run away with it, the distant hills of Bodmin moor. He didn’t speculate in the realms of fiction much these days. He brought his gaze back to the utilitarian architecture.

The seagull was back, perched on the sill, as it had been day after day. Sometimes, it tapped the window with its beak. Ben was never sure if the gull wanted in, or for him to open the window and join it outside, flying or falling. Freedom either way.

Secretly, Ben thought the gull was an albatross. It was so vast, so impressive, that it seemed inconceivable that it could be an ordinary gull blown in from Plymouth Sound and sitting on the grimy ledge. The first albatross perhaps to make it to England, tossed on ocean currents all the way from the Chatham Islands, lost, alone. If it was, then it was in good company. Ben had never felt so lost or so alone, and he had spent a fair proportion of his life being buffeted by metaphorical winds far stronger than those that prowled the vast oceans of the world.

Author Interview:
Today I’m super lucky to be talking with John Wiltshire! Hi John, thanks for chatting with us. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

1) Give us an interesting fun fact or a few about your book or series:

Enid Toogood is a real person. Her trees were real. They also got taken down for her, very suspiciously, by an ex-army person…He has not yet been caught.
Emilia is real. As she’s too young to read the books, she doesn’t know she’s in the series.
She’s scarier in real life than in fiction.

2) How did you come up with the title of your book or series?

The overall series title is actually explained by one of the characters in Book 6: pound for pound the human body gives out more heat than the sun. Ben and Nikolas burn for each other, so it’s very applicable for this whole series.
Book 1, Love is a Stranger is very much the theme of the book—Ben is in love, but he doesn’t actually know anything about the man he’s fallen for. He’s in for a bit of a shock.
Book 2, Conscious Decisions of the Heart speaks to making a leap of faith, one not entirely explicable by rational thought, and yet deliberate for all that.
Book 3, Bridge of Silver Wings is a quote from a poem by Aberjhani: a bridge of silver wings stretches from the dead ashes of an unforgiving nightmare to the jeweled vision of a life started anew. That is Nikolas’s situation in book 3 summed up.
Book 4, This Other Country is based around two ideas…one is the gay theme addressed for the first time, the idea of gay life being a separate nation, and secondly there’s an echo of “and there’s another country, I heard of long ago” which is a hymn to sacrifice, which is the theme of the book.
Book 5, The Bruise-Black Sky I just liked the sound of.
Book 6, Death’s Ink-Black Shadow again comes from a poem, this time from the Spartans: and learn to love death’s ink-black shadow as much as you love the light of dawn. It speaks to the very heart of the novel: embracing the darkness inside and using it to emerge triumphant.
Book 7, Enduring Night is based on the same clever grammatical play on words at work in ‘Enduring Love’, which is a great novel by Ian McEwan. Nikolas endures a very long night indeed in book 7.

3) Have you ever given one of your characters the personality of someone you know?
Very much so. They are all amalgamations of people I know. Some are pretty much spot on their real life counterparts, some are pix-and-mix. I don’t stray far from things I know for my main characters: ex-army.

4) What do you think makes a good story?
Basically, good writing. Good writing can make pretty much anything readable but bad writing ruins even the best plot. Having said that, to make a story fill an entire novel, the premise behind the story has to be good as well.

5) What does your family think of your writing?
Hah, I’ve never been asked that before. To be honest, very few of them have read any of it. My mother is my number one fan though. She’s 85. She’s had a lot to come to terms with about me as it is, so I think reading my books now is the least of her worries. She waits eagerly for each new one in the series to come out in paperback as she can’t use a Kindle. The rest of the family? Not so keen to know the details, I suspect. Don’t ask, don’t tell.

Review: This Other Country (More Heat Than the Sun #4) by John Wiltshire

Nikolas is the sanest, straightest, person he knows, so can anyone tell him, why he's on a gay therapy course?

Nikolas Mikkelsen could make a very long list of unpleasant things he's endured in his life. Then order it from 'nearly killed me' to 'extremely horrific and don't want to do again'. And what did it say about his forty-five years that being hit by a tsunami would be a considerable way down this list? But nothing, not torture, imprisonment, nor starvation has prepared him for what he now has to endure for Ben Rider's sake-attendance on a residential, gay therapy course. At least he has a new contender for the top spot on his 'my awful life' list.

You are going to L.O.V.E This Other Country.

Of course, I'm assuming you've read the first three (which you definitely need to do first)

If that's a go, then I'm also going to assume that you love Nik & Ben (<- accurate. Has to be.)

This was more fun and lighthearted than what we're used to. Now, when I say fun and lighthearted, I'm still talking about Nik and Ben. There was still suspense and crazy shenanigans, but there was a different feel to it this time. For starters, I wasn't in agony over their relationship. There were leaps and bounds made between Nik and Ben in book 3 (still swooning over those instances, big time) and they continued in that direction. The suspense wasn't as nerve-wracking here. The story was a little slower and there was some suspense, just not action-packed. And, of course, it was funny. The humor was intricately woven into the plot and dialogue. It's almost like an inside joke, the more I get to know the characters, the funnier their banter and dialogue becomes because I totally get them now. It's like I know Ben and Nik.

So this one's a little different. The focus shifted a bit.

The focus was mostly on Ben and Nik and their crazy, romantic, all-consuming, obsessive love.

Sound perfect? Yeah, I thought so.

They discover that something funny is going on with a gay couples counseling retreat. People are going and not returning when they should, or worse, ending up dead. Ben and Nik are on it. They plan to go check out this course, disguised as a gay couple. Yup. They are 'pretending to be gay.' Nikolas is especially adamant that he's not gay. He will tell you all day long that he's not gay. And then go to bed with Ben and do all sorts of deliciously dirty things. It was an added bit of humor and it's always fun to laugh at Nikolas's expense. But there were some realizations and even more declarations that are sure to make fans very, very mushy and gushy inside.

Like I said, this is a More Heat Than the Sun book, so it wasn't all fun and laughs. Expect to yell some 'holy shizballs' and 'OMG's' throughout the second half. It should have been horrible. It should have been heartbreaking. At times, it was. But Ben and Nik gravitate towards each other. What they have is obsessive and controlling and, most likely, insane, but it's also natural, and just plain meant to be. In the end, what happened was so perfect. It changed them even more. Made what they shared even better. Is that even possible? Apparently so.

I can't wait for the next installment. Can't. Wait. What else could they go through? How much more could they possibly take?

Most importantly: How much deeper do we get to delve into their to-die-for romance?

Review: The Bridge of Silver Wings (More Heat Than the Sun #3) by John Wiltshire

The third book in the series More Heat Than the Sun

Ben discovers the truth of the old adage 'be careful what you wish for'. Nikolas has exorcised his demons, but when they end up stranded in Russia, the monster inside needs to be let loose. Siberia in winter isn't a place for good men. There is nothing Nikolas won't do to keep Ben alive. Home again, Nikolas then faces an enemy he can't defeat: Ben Rider himself. Discovering a new family, Ben realises he's been living too long in the shadows cast by Nikolas's all-consuming love. For the first time, life apart from Nikolas is possible. Is Nikolas strong enough to let Ben go?

Move over favorites list!

*shoves past Jake & Adrien and Ben & Tim & Jace* (<- yeah, I said that)

*makes room for Ben & Nikolas*

Good. Now that they are right where they belong, we can begin.

This series is climbing higher and higher towards the very tip-top of my favorites list. It has it all. Crazy good plot, action, suspense, intense chemistry and a romance to die for.

Right away I was sucked into their romance. For me, it's all in the dialogue. The dialogue. For serious, John Wiltshire can write a conversation. I'm not much of a highlighter, but I have 11 highlights just in chapter one. Their connection is so intense, I feel it in everything they say and do. I'm not even gonna start with the quoting here. I won't be able to stop once I do.

In part 1, Ben and Nikolas are off to Russia. On the way, the plane crashes in a remote area. There are some survivors, but Nik and Ben have to come together in order to get themselves and the survivors to safety. It's not an easy task. They face some pretty horrific things and, oh my, the suspense! My heart may have stopped a few times.

Their relationship thrived in this crazy sitch they found themselves in. Amongst people dying and surviving late fall in Russia, these two are out having sex in the snow. And playing and cuddling and being all swoony and cute. Nikolas? Cute? Yeah, he was. They really made some progress in this love they share.

I thought we were all hunky dory. I was settling in for smooth HEA sailing in Part 2.

Ha! If I thought Part 1 was suspenseful... I really was not prepared for Part 2. Not in the least.

In Part 2, Ben is able to see his newly found house and reconnect with family he never knew he had. Sounds nice and peaceful, right? Yup, it shoulda been. But, as we know, Ben and Nik don't do well with calm. Ugh. This kind of stress is not good for my heart. Ben went a little bonkers. I get that his life was kind of turned upside down, but I really wanted to smack him. Which is weird, because it's usually Nikolas I want to smack.

Some crazy stuffs went down. There were times I gasped out loud or had to just stop, put the kindle down and take a few breaths. It was that intense. But it was so (sosososososo) worth it. Both men proved themselves to each other. The things they did... *sigh* they were so perfect and thoughtful and had so much damn meaning, that I was a blubbering mess.

Their relationship is just breathtaking.

Here I've gone on and on about them and I've yet to mention how damn sexy they are. Nikolas may be the take-charge kind of guy in their 'everyday' affairs, but in the bedroom he is Ben's. And Ben takes full advantage of that control. Unf.

I feel like I'm not fully conveying my complete adoration of this series. I'm trying really hard not to be like 'OMG!OMG!OMG! It's so totally awesome and I can't get enough of them!' When this is really all I want to say when I talk about this couple. I want you to know that the writing is phenomenal, I love it and I want you to read it and love it, too. Then come tell me about it so we can gush about all the things. I need someone to gush with.

Review: Concious Decisions of the Heart (More Heat than the Sun #2) by John Wiltshire

Ben Rider and Nikolas Mikkelsen learn that danger comes in all shapes and sizes and often in places you least expect it. Nikolas's dark past calls to him, inexorably dragging him back into its seductive embrace. While he goes on an errand of mercy to Russia, Ben travels to Denmark to learn Nikolas's language. Convinced Russia's vastness will swallow Nikolas, Ben doesn't see the enemy much closer to home. Thinking he has lost Nikolas, Ben then makes a terrible decision that threatens to destroy everything they have together. Focused on this very personal horror, bound by a new level of commitment, they have no idea that a greater threat is coming. And when it arrives, it changes everything---even the definition of commitment. Warning: This story contains the violent death of a minor character and some graphic violence.

"I surrender. I give you permission to continue with your stubborn, unrealistic blind faith in my complete lovability. It's quite astounding to me no one else has ever noticed just how loveable I apparently am."
I noticed! Me! Me, Nik! And thank you for the permission. I will continue to love you.

I could write a review just about how much I love Nik and how that dude makes me swoon.
"[...] You need a heart to want someone, and I gave mine to you, Benjamin. Or did you forget?"
 *swoon*

Ben, Nikolas and Nikolas' lies are back. They're faced with Nik's past, yet again, and Nik is off to Russia, continuing to fight his demons. I actually really liked their time apart (which is not something I would usually say). It was nice to get to know Ben's character without Nik around. He's just... a good guy. Regardless of the things he's done, he really shines in this sequel. Not to mention, I thoroughly enjoy texts and such between characters and theirs were great. It allowed some great dialogue without it being too serious. Plus, we were able to hear from Nik even if he wasn't there. And then on Ben's birthday? Unf. There goes Nik again, making me swoon and he wasn't even there, FFS.

Ugh, but once Nik returned and the shenanigans that followed... broke my heart! But, they seem to thrive from these situations. If not for all the horrible things they've gone through, they definitely wouldn't be in the same place in their relationship that they are now. We truly see the depth of Ben's affection for Nik and what might (but, hopefully, wouldn't really) happen to Ben without him. We're constantly shown Nik's feelings by all his swoony words.
"I need you, Benjamin. Everything else in this world I've discovered over the last few days is unnecessary to me. I need life, and I need you. Now, we're leaving. Make yourself more useful than you usually do and pack my bag."
He's got some seriously good words. I could quote him all day.

But with Ben you can just feel his complete love for Nik come through in everything he does. Eventually, Nik gets there, too. It takes some danger and one serious disaster, but I think he really (really) knows what he has now and I'm not sure he's willing to ever let it go.

Now, I just need 300 pages of HEA time with lots of lovey dialogue. But, judging by the blurb for book #3, that's not gonna happen. I think I'll be made to suffer a bit longer. For Ben and Nik? Heck, yes.

Review: Love is a Stranger by John Wiltshire

How do you love someone who exists entirely in the shadows? How do you love a man who describes himself as dead? How do you get that ghost to love you back? Ex-SAS soldier Ben Rider falls in love with his enigmatic married boss Sir Nikolas Mikkelsen, but Nikolas is living a lie. A lie so profound that when the shadows are lifted, Ben realises he's in love with a very dangerous stranger. Ben has to choose between Nikolas and safety, but sometimes danger comes in a very seductive package.

Well, this was different and refreshing! Twists, turns, lies, action. Just fun!

Right away we're thrust into the affair between Ben and Nikolas.  It's hot and heavy and 'just sex'. Pfft. Okay, I haven't heard that before. I know, I know, I just said that this is different, and it is.  Obviously, what Nik and Ben have is more than sex, we all know it even if they don't. But there's one little snag in their relationship (other than 'just sex'), Nik is married.

It's clear right away that Nik is not who or what he seems. As Ben is dragged further and further into Nik's web, he's finding out more and more about his lover and who he really is. Maybe. Kind of. Okay, not really. But regardless of who he is, as far as his identity goes, one thing was the the same throughout, he loved Ben. No matter how hard he tried to deny or pretend otherwise, he was.
"'So, I have not really changed all that much Benjamin. I believe I am very much what I once was.' He looked across the table. 'Totally obsessed with you.'"
Unf. If that doesn't make someone just swoon, I don't know what will. Nik is an excellent character. He's witty, funny and, even though we don't know much about his identity, his actions and feelings towards Ben are very real. And he knows he's a liar and secretive. He totally owns it and he owns it well.
"'I lied. I always lie, you know this.'"
Ben was great, too. He stuck by Nik, he knew there were secrets and danger, but he stayed, he was there and he was honest. He's not dumb though. Ben is very aware of the kind of person Nik is and I liked that he didn't let him get away with the lies.

This is different that your run-of-the-mill suspense. There isn't just one suspense storyline, solved and done. There's a couple of... erhm... missions, I guess you could say, that Ben and Nik have to deal with. They're full of action, fast-paced and we're even left with a mini-cliffy! *gasp*

Awesome characters and some awesome suspense, but there were a few dull moments in between. I did get a little bored a couple times, luckily the feeling didn't last long, but I was bored nonetheless.

If you need a break from the typical M/M tropes Love is a Stranger is a great choice. I'd definitely recommend it and I'll be on the lookout for more of Nik and Ben.

I need a solid HEA, dammit!
