Review: Under the Knife by Laurin Kelly

Season three of TV's hottest cooking competition, Under the Knife, is gearing up, and Nate is equal parts excited and terrified that he's one of the twelve competitors. But the prize is a quarter of a million dollars, and that's worth a few weeks of being stressed and afraid.

It may not, however, be worth weeks of putting up with Zachary, the cold, snotty competitor who definitely thinks he's better than everyone else. The man can cook, and he's the hottest man Nate has ever seen, but every time he opens his mouth Nate hates him all over again.

He came here to be driven crazy trying to prove he's the best chef in the world, but if Nate can't learn to block Zachary out it won't be the competition that pushes him to the breaking point.

If you're a fan of competitive cooking shows like I am this is a book for you. My all time favorite was the old school Iron Chef, the Japanese version with the bizarrely serene voice over commentary that was set up like a fucking cage match. Where did that show go? The American version was a solid follow up and then that disappeared too! So now we have Chopped. It's hard not love a show where the chefs get basket ingredients like duck mousse, half eaten birthday cake, rooibos tea and a box of tic tacs and are told they have 20 mins to make a restaurant quality dessert.

My face when they list the basket ingredients.

But the ones that are ongoing like choosing the next Iron Chef are the ones I invest in. I, like a lot of other people, always have a favorite. There may be a few that I like but I usually root for one and that one in this fictionalized show was Nate. I LOVED NATE!

Nate is a burly Jewish guy from a single parent home who never met a stranger and everyone loves him. Because he's that guy. He's kind, always has something positive to say and has that gravitational pull thing. People want to be around him because he puts people at ease. He's a mediator and your best friend and your big brother. And he can cook like nobody's business.

Almost immediately he and Carmen are best buds and from the moment she met him and started calling him osito...I knew. I knew they would form an alliance and this wouldn't be all undercutting and backstabbing which I hate. There is a bad apple because there's always a bad apple, but by and large everyone gets along.

Nate is instantly attracted to Zachary physically, but Zachary is aloof. He's extremely focused, kind of taciturn, keeps people at arms length and on the icy side. Zachary's cooking style is classic French and he's been trained at the CIA whereas Nate went to community college and has done pretty much every job there is to do in a restaurant and he favors hearty foods. They squabble quite a bit but their mutual attraction is clear even though the story is told exclusively through Nate. The scene where Nate comes back from a run on the beach shirtless and sweaty it's imminently clear that Zachary wants to climb him like a tree. And when Zachary came to join Nate and Carmen in the hot tub in his teeny tiny swim trunks with the flames on them... something was on fire alright and it was not the BBQ grill.

The cameras being ever present made for great UST and a slow burn. Lots of touching, furtive hand holding and fondling with longing looks and a whole bunch of teasing by their fellow competitors. They are in so much denial about how obvious they are and it's adorable. Really, it was a joy to read. Once they do get a break it was well worth the wait and hilarious. Zachary has a dirty dirty mouth and is ready for Nate's cock in the worst way. Needless to say they are both...

They can't get their clothes off fast enough. And afterwards... big teddy bear went directly to sleep. He did not pass go nor did he collect $200. I'm not sure he even got the condom off before he conked out.

Teddy bear worked HARD!

Zachary was a hard sell for me, but Kelly showed his transformation. By the end, I was rooting for them and that speech he gave had my face leaking.

I'm not sure how true this is as far as competitive cooking shows go but I had no idea they had to sit around for hours on end waiting for the judges to deliberate or that they had to be sequestered once eliminated. But when they were cooking it was so fun. It gets my juices flowing trying to figure out challenges and what to do with ingredients and Kelly did a great job balancing the cooking with the relationship development. I also really loved that the hunger in America issue was included.

Under the Knife captivated me and I barely put it down, but I do hope it got a final edit before it was released because there were a lot of errors. An entire line of dialogue was repeated, the recipe for simple syrup only contained water, sometimes the names and words were used incorrectly and sometimes it seemed like it switched to Zachary's perspective mid-paragraph. I had to reread several things more than once.

Recommend to foodies, cooking show enthusiasts, fans of the slow burn and feel good reads.

Review: Roadside Rescue by Caitlin Ricci

After her girlfriend leaves her for an ex, Kelly takes off with her mustang, Shoni, and as many of her things as she can pack into her truck. The flip of a coin has her going west along I-70 from her home in Missouri, sending her toward Colorado. While driving through Dove Creek, she gets a flat tire on her trailer. She has a spare, but in his panic, Shoni manages to jerk the trailer enough to damage the wheel.

Her salvation comes in the form of sexy mechanic, Brigid, who owns a shop nearby. With a few days to wait for the wheel, the two get to know each other. A bit of fun isn’t all Brigid wants from her, but Kelly isn’t ready to jump into anything new so soon after her break up, and when Brigid offers her a job, Kelly doesn’t want to tie her life to someone so completely again.

Kelly is in need of some stability, and that’s exactly what Brigid is offering her. If she’s willing to take a chance on letting another woman into her life again, Brigid might be just who she needs.

Such short stories are always a really tough sell for me. I always want more. More character growth, more depth, more sexytimes. While I did get that feeling here, Roadside Rescue was a solid and enjoyable story, especially for it's short 35 pages.

After Kelly's girlfriend (now ex) told her she was leaving her, Kelly hightailed it out of town. She didn't have a destination. It was an "anywhere but here" kind of thing. But she gets stuck in a small town after she blows a tire. Things start to look up for her when she sees how sexy the town mechanic is.

The mechanic, Bri, was just as into Kelly as Kelly was into her. They hit it off pretty quick and things move fast between them. There was a little bit of insta. Definitely some insta-lust, which quickly moved to a pretty big commitment. Again, the story was super short, but I would have been okay with a HFN that fit withe story. Just to make the ending a little more realistic with the time frame.

I liked that Kelly was able to find love again in an unexpected place. She was feeling down from being recently dumped and wasn't looking for anything resembling a relationship. But she found someone that made her happy and she went with it.

Yeah, it was fast and somewhat unbelievable. But it was sweet and romantic, which is exactly why I read this genre. So, all in all, it was a winner for me.

They got out of the truck and started heading toward me. I remembered that I knew manners somewhere around the time that Brigid was five feet away from me. She had deeply tanned skin that was close to olive, so it had to be at least somewhat genetic instead of from years spent out in the sun. There were plenty of dirt and grease smears on her skin, which I could see a lot of because she had her jumpsuit wrapped around her waist, leaving her in just a black sports bra. Small, firm breasts, a great smile that was already half a smirk, dirty fingernails, and I was struggling not to sound like an idiot when she came up and stuck her hand out for me to shake.

“Hey, I’m Brigid.”

“Kelly.” I wanted to hang on to her hand, but she pulled it away and wiped it on her pant leg.

“Sorry. I was working on an old beater.”

I didn’t mind in the least.

“Looks like you could use a new wheel. I’ve got one that should work. If not, I can always order the part from Denver. Are you in a hurry?”

I quickly shook my head. I had no plans to be anywhere, and the way she smiled at me made me think I didn’t want to be anywhere else for a while either. It was nice to be smiled at like that again.

Synopsis

Fairy tale endings weren’t made for people like me. Happy for now usually ain’t in the cards, either.

The dents on my wall from where my headboard kept knockin’ against the same spot was the first clue that I needed to calm my ass down. At the rate I was racking up notches and plowing through hookups, I wasn’t ever gonna find nothing real. Guess I kinda jinxed myself. I created my circumstances. You can’t get what you want if you keep falling back into the same pattern of bad habits. But then things changed. I stumbled onto somethin’ I never in a million years expected to happen. You gotta understand, I’m never the guy who wins. It was supposed to be just sex, but that shifty, rhyming and scheming bastard, Cupid, pulled a fast one.

I may have changed some stuff to protect a couple of people. But before you go believing the tabloids, make sure you understand that you’re gettin’ the lowdown straight from the source.

I needed to get this off my chest and it’s only fair that you at least get my side of it all. At some point, I might regret telling you any of this, but for now, you need to know.

*Disclaimer* This is a novella. Not a short story, novelette, or novel. This tale features an M/M pairing. If gay erotica/erotic romance is not your cup of tea and you are offended by same-sex relationships or crass language, you should bypass this story. Content is intended for a mature audience, 18+.

Complexity is the fourth installment in The Kinky Connect Chronicles. The Kinky Connect Chronicles are short erotic stories/novelettes all wrapped up in neat little bows. These stories are standalones. No cliffhangers in the lot!

“Ain’t no easy way to say this, so I’m just gonna say it. You can ask me whatever you want after. Cool?”

Marisol looks up from the phone, and Juan shifts her on his lap, asking, “What’s up, Emmanuel?”

I take a deep breath and let ’er rip.

“I wasn’t seeing a girl, a woman. I was um . . . dating a guy. His name is Chris. I’m bisexual, and we were involved for a bit before things got too serious and I . . . we . . . called it off.”

Both Marisol and Juan stare at me, stunned. Juan’s mouth is parted in an O, but he quickly closes it.

He scratches the back of his head with this goofy-ass look on his face, and Marisol looks down at the tablecloth, her cheeks flushing. Moms and Lucia are quiet.

“Now’s the time to speak up if you got some shit to say, Juan. Let it out.”

Moms frowns at me. She hates when I curse.

“I-I had no idea you were gay, um, bi.”

“Not something I go around shouting since who I fu . . . uh, have sex with is nobody’s business.”

“Moms, you and Titi Lucia are quiet. Too quiet. You knew?” he asks.

Moms nods at Juan. “Sí.”

My mother grabs my brother’s hand and gives it a little squeeze. “Juan, I love you both no matter what. Manny is an adult and he’s living his life. He knows I care about him protecting himself and being safe more than anything. Doesn’t matter if he’s with a woman or a man. A mi no me corresponde, ni es mi derecho, juzgar a alguien a base de su orientación sexual.”

Moms is saying that judging me, or anybody, on the grounds of their sexual orientation isn’t her business nor her right. I’ve never loved my mother more than I do in this moment. She let everyone in the room know that her job is to love me, and never judge. Moms displayed exactly what unconditional love is.

Titi Lucia chimes in, “He’s your brother. Nothing about him has changed. He’s the same guy you grew up with. The one who made you breakfast, helped you with your homework when your mother was working, washed your pissy sheets when you wet the bed, taught you how to fight and how to shoot a basketball. He was the father you should’ve had if yours wasn’t a deadbeat loser. Manny loves you no matter what, and you’d better feel the same, Juan.” Lucia’s voice is threatening as she wags a finger at my brother.

“Okay, okay, let’s chill out and let Juan process this for a sec. We cool or what?” I ask, staring at him. Marisol lifts off his lap and excuses herself. Lucia follows her and Moms takes a seat at the table.

Review: Bunkhouse Boys by Marie Piper

Kenny and Blue, two hands at the Tate Ranch, find distraction in each other from sleepless nights and days filled with hard work. Keeping their relationship a secret might be essential, but with their growing need for each other, it sure won’t be easy.

I love stories about cowboys and I love historical settings, put the two together and I am one happy Peach. I was excited about reading this one and while I did like the writing and what was here, in the end there really wasn’t much here overall. What I read of the characters I liked, but there wasn’t enough foundation for me to get invested in their story.

The setting is promising with a group of ranch hands sharing sleeping space in the ranch bunkhouse. Kenny has trouble sleeping and always is awake when Blue stumbles in after spending too much time drinking. One night Blue is in the midst of rubbing one out when he catches Kenny watching him. One thing leads to another and there is boning outside the bunkhouse.

The scene was definitely steamy, but after that life on the ranch continued. The two had a tryst in the barn and that led to a really hot scene in the bunkhouse full of sleeping men. The possibility of getting caught upped the heat level and was very much a pleasure to read. But that was about it, there wasn’t a story to pull the characters together and I missed that connection.

For a quick and hot cowboy read, Bunkhouse Boys is good stuff but you aren’t going to get a fully fleshed out story.

Kenny had always been a terrible sleeper. He’d never been one to just lie down and close his eyes and dream. Always, he’d be the one still up hours after everyone else. He became real familiar with the ceilings of the places he slept, from the sod house of his childhood to the different bunkhouses at the ranches and farms he’d worked at as he grew to a man. He came to know lots of holes in the boards that made walls, and the stitching of the blankets that warmed him. Even at twenty-five years old and employed at the Tate ranch where the boss ran his boys hard from sunup to sundown, Kenny could never simply just go to sleep.
Of course, he was wide awake and pulling at the loose string of a missing button on his long underwear the night Blue snuck back into the bunkhouse. Everyone else had drifted off hours ago, and as Blue made his way through the dark room, his long tan duster caught the moonlight and made him look like a ghost. Blue took off his coat and lay back on his bunk, which was next to Kenny’s. The wood of the bedframe creaked under his weight. Blue was big man, tall and broad-shouldered, and he filled every inch of his bed from top to bottom. He dropped his boots off the bed, rustled a bit, and his pants followed after his boots.
Unseen, Kenny rolled his eyes in the dark.
All the boys drank at the saloon a few miles away more often than they should, but Blue was the most relentless about it. Every night after supper, unless he was on duty, Blue would take off to town and not come back until his words were slurred and the reek of booze came from him. He’d stomp through the room noisily and wake half the boys before he even got to his bunk.
For a moment, the room was silent save for the sounds of snores and mumbles and farts, same as any room full of sleeping men. Kenny let go of his string and started counting the planks on the bunk above his head. Duncan snored loudly up there. Not many of the other fellows liked him, on account of his being a loud-mouthed brute who always seemed to be ready to pick on those younger, smaller, or different than he liked.
A quiet sound caught Kenny’s attention, the sound of an arm against a blanket. It was coming from Blue’s bunk. Kenny could tell even in the darkness what he was doing. The motion, the rhythm—Blue was yanking at himself. In a room full of men, this was not unusual. Still, Kenny turned his head toward Blue’s bunk. In a peek from the moonlight, he could see Blue’s blanket moving on his lap.
“You like watchin’ me?” Blue whispered.

Review: A Cowboy's Home (Montana #3) by R.J. Scott

One burned and broken man finds his way home. Can he find peace in the arms of a man easy to love?

Justin made the ultimate sacrifice for his country, battling domestic terrorism, never the man he really was, using hate to avenge the death of his best friend. The friend he'd killed.

What he doesn’t count on is getting shot, and if he's going to die he wants it to be on Crooked Tree soil. Home.

Sam is as much a part of Crooked Tree as any of the families, and the offer to buy into the ranch is a dream come true. But falling for a hidden, secretive, injured man isn’t the way to keep his head in the game.

For over a decade, Justin believed that his family and friends were in danger. He let this belief turn him into a monster - a trained killer. When he finds out that it was all a lie, Justin is determined to break free of those who kept him in the dark. He knows it’s dangerous, but if his time is running out, he wants to see Crooked Tree Ranch one last time.

At the ranch, Sam has found a family, something that he hasn’t had since he was sixteen. Though surrounded by people who love and accept him, Sam yearns for someone to call his own. When he finds a badly injured man on ranch property, his first instinct is to help.

As Sam helps the man slowly heal, and revelations are made, he finds himself falling for Justin. But Justin doesn’t think he deserves Sam’s love, not after what he’s done.

After the way things ended in The Rancher's Son, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Justin’s story. I wanted to know how he and Adam ended up in their situation. Plus, I took a liking to Sam and wanted him to get his HEA too.

The Crooked Tree Ranch has really grown on me over the past two books, so I enjoyed being back there. It was great to catch up with the couples from the previous books, and some of the secondary characters.

I’m a sucker for a hurt/comfort romance, so I really liked the first half of ‘A Cowboy’s Home’. When Sam first discovers Justin, Justin can barely walk on his own. As Sam helps nurse Justin back to health, the two develop a bond.

For Justin, Sam is the only person on the ranch who doesn’t see him through the goggles of a past life. On the other hand, Sam finds that he connects with Justin without much effort, something he’s never had before.

So I liked how Justin and Sam’s romance began. But I wasn’t entirely sold on their relationship after that. There was a lack of relationship development. Justin and Sam just go from tentatively acknowledging that they like each other, to wanting each other forever-and-ever.

Given that the two only spend a couple of days together, during which Justin is in no physical or mental condition to be thinking about a relationship, and then the two separate for a long time, I didn’t buy the depth of the feelings for one another.

In classic R.J. Scott fashion, the plot is as over-the-top as I would expect it to be. I just would have liked it to be tightened up some more. The revelations regarding Justin and Adam’s disappearance kept me interested, though they didn’t entirely make sense. There are big holes in the reasoning behind how the two got into the whole mess to begin with, and how Justin got roped in for over a decade, but then so easily broke free.

Overall, I’ve got mixed feelings about ‘A Cowboy’s Home’. I really enjoyed the first half, but Justin and Sam’s lacklustre romance, and a plot that required too much suspension of disbelief, meant that I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I thought I would.

Tag Team Review: Staged (Belonging #3) by Kim Fielding

Once the second-prize winner on My Slave’s Got Talent, Sky Blue has spent the past few years singing at a failing New York nightclub. While Sky has never had control over his fate, his life seems to take a turn for the worse when he’s torn from the familiar comfort of performing and sold to a rich and enigmatic man.

Morgan Wallace takes his newly purchased slave to San Francisco, his intentions unclear. On the one hand, he treats Sky with more kindness than Sky has ever known—treats him like a real person. On the other hand, he shares Sky at parties hosted by his sadistic new friends.

A confused slave is an endangered slave, and Sky isn’t even sure of his master’s real name. Is he Morgan Wallace, wealthy and cruel, or Mackenzie Webster, caring and compassionate? Caught between hope, fear, and an undeniably growing attachment, Sky struggles to untangle which parts are real and which are merely a performance. His future, his heart, and even his life may depend on it.

Reader discretion advised. This title contains the following sensitive themes:

dubious consent
explicit violence
non-consent

If you’re not familiar with the Belonging Verse, it’s AU wherein slavery was never abolished and has expanded to most of the world. Also, slavery has been instituted as a possible punishment for a crime. It baffles me how a government, any government could justify subjugating an entire family because of one person’s crime. Then again, what’s a “good” justification for enslaving people? That subjugation was more troubling for me in this book because the “BDSM” highlighted the disparity between slaves and freemen to horrify effect.

Trigger warnings-aside from the obvious, explicit violence and rape occur on page.

Mind the content warnings.

Sky is a born slave and was first sold at 8 yrs old. He’s been a singer in a boy band and has been making his way most recently as a singer at a struggling supper club when he’s sold to Mr. Burgess, slave dealer, who treats all his slaves like chattel. This plot point didn’t really make sense to me. I’m assuming he buys and sells people to make a profit, so wouldn’t you endeavor to make them more appealing rather than shoving them in a cell in a dark warehouse, feeding them inedible slop, dressing them in threadbare and dingy tunics and not allowing them to bathe?

Sky’s then bought by Mr. Wallace and it’s clear quickly that Morgan Wallace isn’t a typical Master. He gives Sky atypical rules with impunity such as always telling the truth and asking for clarification if there’s something he doesn’t understand. He gives him freedoms he’s never had before. Simple things like deciding for himself how to spend his time, letting him use the computer and buying him books.

“Do you think one person’s pain makes another person’s suffering less important?”

Along the way we get to know Wallace and his history. He may be free but he’s suffered throughout the course of his life through poverty, marginalization and survived unthinkable tragedies. Those events have given him purpose, driven him to be the person he is and to fight for what he believes in.

The entire story is told from Sky’s perspective and he finds himself attracted to Wallace despite the power differential and the abuse that he suffers at these “parties” held by Wallace’s acquaintances who are monsters. Wallace makes it clear to Sky that he despises these people but he has no choice but to attend and bring Sky along, though he does try to bring him infrequently. Not to put too fine a point on it, but Sky’s experiences are hellish and these people are psychopaths not sadists.

I won’t give anything away because figuring out what was really going on was my favorite part of Staged. The plot’s well constructed, held my attention throughout and packs a punch with its relevancy. Fielding did a superb job with the inherent power differential and how that precludes having a relationship with any hope of sustainability or longevity.

But that doesn’t stop Wallace from falling for Sky.

“Because I want to. Because...God, when you hum to yourself or smile, it’s like a heavy burden lifted off my heart. Because you’re stronger than me and braver than me, and I’m fairly certain you’re smarter than me too. And because I want...I want to do what I can within the cage I’ve built us both.”

The sex is in the medium hot range but it did have a twist that I quite enjoyed. Quite.

“Suffering can be a gift. It can even be beautiful when it’s willingly taken, willingly given. But when it’s stolen, that’s an abomination.”

“You’re mine” [...] “Not forever. But right this minute, you are truly mine.”

The ending is hopeful. It’s not a firm HEA, but I think that’s the genius of Staged. Since it’s told exclusively through Sky, I didn’t feel anything more than attraction and care from him so a tacked on HEA would’ve felt disingenuous to me.

One nitpicky thing-the peeing. There was an inordinate amount of peeing. We all pee it's a part of life and some of it was pertinent to the plot, but I don't need to know every time a protagonist pees.

If the content warnings don't put you off and you're a fan of Fielding this could work for you.

Born into slavery, Sky Blue has never known freedom. Passed from one owner to another, he’s always done what was expected of him, which usually meant putting his singing abilities to use. But Sky isn’t the good slave he’s supposed to be, because deep down he’s never accepted that slavery is justified, or that the “slave gene” actually exists.

After he’s bought by a man named Morgan Wallace, Sky finds himself in a situation he doesn’t understand. His new master treats him with respect when they’re at home, but Morgan shares Sky with his sadistic friends at parties. Sky’s not sure what Morgan does for a living, and why his master also has a second name, Mackenzie Webster.

Sky doesn’t know who the real Morgan is, or what Morgan wants from him, but that doesn’t stop him from slowly falling for his new master.

I haven’t read the preceding books in the Belonging series yet, so I wasn’t sure what to expect in this alternate universe where slavery still exists in modern Western society. However, ‘Staged’ works perfectly fine as a standalone. Kim Fielding, as always, does an excellent job with the world-building, portraying this alternate San Francisco and how it came to be.

Though this book revolves around slavery, and readers get a front-row seat to the torture that Sky suffers at the hands of Morgan’s friends, it isn’t as dark as I thought it might be. This is in large part because Morgan, despite the mystery and contradictions that surround him, clearly does care for Sky, and tries to minimize the pain he suffers.

That care, of course, doesn’t make Sky’s situation any better, but it does add some hope to the story.

I immediately connected to Sky, and I think it would be hard not to. Despite his circumstances, he has a strength in him that refuses to bend. He knows what he wants, even though he’s been told all his life that he deserves nothing. It was difficult to read what he went through, but Sky doesn’t let the abuse he suffers break him, and comes out stronger in the end.

Sky and Morgan’s relationship takes a while to develop. They begin as master and slave, and then become tentative friends. At home, Morgan doesn’t use Sky, and instead treats him like an equal. The two spend a lot of time together - cooking, exercising, watching movies, and just talking. It’s during this close proximity that they begin falling for each other.

I thought Kim Fielding did a very good job balancing Sky and Morgan’s feelings for one another with the reality of their situation as slave and owner. Both Morgan and Sky recognize that there can’t be anything between them while one of them holds all of the power.

Despite that power dynamic and the violent world they live in, Sky and Morgan’s relationship is sweet. Both men find in each other someone they can be honest and open with, and around whom they can be who they truly are. It was easy to root for Morgan and Sky.

There’s also a mystery angle in this book. I won’t give anything away, but I think if you pay attention it’s not the hard to figure out what’s going on. Even so, the few twists made for a good story.

‘Staged’ is at times a hard book to read, but I think the ending is worth it. If you’re looking for a slave fic that delivers a sweet happy ever after, I’d recommend this book.

Blurb:

In all his relationships, Darren Fielding never found the level of intimacy he witnessed between Thomas Williams and his sub, Peter, the day of Peter’s “rebirth.” Not only that, he never realized such intimacy was possible. For two years, Thomas’s business card has been burning a hole in his wallet. When Darren’s lover moves on, maybe it’s finally time to see where that card takes him.

Collars & Cuffs’s new barman, JJ Taylor, is really conflicted right now. He went to the club with a very specific purpose, already convinced of what he’d find there. Except it’s not what he expected at all. He certainly didn’t anticipate finding himself drawn to the new wannabe Dom. Nor could he have guessed the direction that attraction would lead him.

Old love, new love, vows, pain, rage, moving in, moving on…. The members of Collars & Cuffs face an event that touches some of them deeply, but it will only reinforce what they already know: together they are stronger, and some bonds cannot be broken.

Excerpt:

“Honey, I’m home.”

Alex laughed and came out of the kitchen to greet his husband. “We’ve talked about this, right? You do not walk into this apartment and talk to me like I’m the little wife.”

Leo kissed him soundly on the cheek. “Aw, but you’d look great in an apron, holding a glass of beer out for your weary, hard-working hubby.” He smirked. “And besides, no one in their right mind would call you little.”

Alex quirked his eyebrows. “One, you don’t drink beer, which is why there’s a glass of chilled chardonnay on the living room table, waiting for you. Two, excuse me—weary? Hard-working? You’ve been standing around in leather chaps and a harness, watching while guys do all manner of things to each other, which probably included a lot of fucking, because, hey, it’s Saturday night, right?”

Leo sighed happily. “What can I say? I love my job.”

Ben & Scott

“Scott, it’s for you,” Ben shouted.
“Coming!”
The stomping of feet heralded the arrival of the redhead who captivated Ben’s heart. Every time he looked at Scott, Ben couldn’t believe he’d gotten so lucky.
“Who is it?”
“She didn’t say. Just asked if she could talk to you. It’s an overseas number. US call.”
Scott’s hand paused midway to the phone.
“Hang up,” he insisted.
“I’m not going to hang up. Talk to whoever it is.”
Scott folded his arms across his chest and sighed. “What if it’s her?”
Ben knew the ‘her’ in question was Scott’s mother. She and her husband had cut him out of their lives when Scott came back to England with Ben.
“If it’s her, then you need deal with it. I’m right here if you need me.”
Scott paled and he shivered. Ben wrapped an arm around him.
“I’ll always be here, Scott. But if you don’t think you can do this, I won’t force you. Say the word, and I’ll tell her you’re not interested in talking to her.
Scott took a deep breath. “No. I’ll…I’ll talk to her. Please don’t go anywhere,” he pleaded.
“Never.”
Scott picked up the phone. “Hello? Who’s calling please?”
He relaxed visibly and blew out the breath.
“Yes, this is Scott. Can I help you?”
Scott listened for a few moments, his eyes growing wide, with a grin to match it.
“Are you serious?” He glanced at Ben. “No, ma’am. I’ll have to talk to my…partner. But thank you for calling.”
Scott hung up the phone, then saved the number in memory.
“What was that about?” Ben wondered.
“You’re not going to believe this. I don’t believe this! I’ve got to call Peter and Alex.”
He grabbed the phone again and turned away.
“Scott, if you don’t stop where you are right this instant and tell me what’s going on, you’re not going to sit for a week.”
Scott faced Ben, the delightful blush staining his cheeks.
“I’m sorry, Sir. I got excited.”
“Really? I hadn’t noticed.”
“Sarcasm really doesn’t become you,” Scott said with a pout.
“Now do you want to tell me what’s going on, or am I going to have to force it from you? As they say, I have ways to make you talk.”
“That woman? Her name was Mary Sinclair. She works at a small animation studio in Los Angeles. She read Puppy Pile and called to ask if we would consider letting her turn it into an animated short!”
“And how much did she ask for?”
Scott cocked his head. “Nothing. She wanted to turn it into a competition. She said she loved the story, and that she thought it had a shot at winning.”
“Scott? Are you sure this is on the level?”
Scott scrunched his face. “Why wouldn’t it be?”
“Your story is amazing. In fact, I think having it turned into a cartoon would be wonderful for kids, but I don’t want you getting your hopes up, then finding out she’s trying to get the rights from you. This isn’t something you can just jump into.”
Scott’s expression spoke of his hurt, and Ben reached for him.
“Come here,” he whispered, pulling Scott to him. “I’m not saying we won’t check it out. I’ll talk to a barrister and see if they have any information on her. But I won’t let anyone hurt you. I made that mistake once, and from now on, you are my primary responsibility.”
Scott gave a weak smile. “Thank you, Sir.”
“Now, do you want me to look up someone to talk with right away, or would you rather I take you to bed and show you why you are the most important thing in the world to me?”
Scott’s grin returned. “How about we call first, then you can show me after?”
Ben laughed at his boy’s excitement. “I love you, you know that, right?”
Scott snuggled close, his head resting on Ben’s chest. “Yeah, I do. And maybe it won’t matter if we wait an hour or two before we check this out.”
Scooping his lover up, he carried him to the bedroom and proceeded to show him in word and deed that he would never have to worry about not being loved.

It turned out that the woman was on the level, but she warned Scott that there would be no money made from this venture. Scott didn’t care. It wasn’t the money. The idea that a kid might see Puppy Pile and find out that they, too, deserved love meant more than any amount of cash they could give him.

The video garnered some nice reviews, but didn’t win the competition. Scott didn’t care, because it was online now, and he could only hope that it would make a difference in someone’s life.

The way Scott had made a difference in Ben’s.

Meet K.C. Wells:

Born and raised in the north-west of England, K.C. WELLS always loved writing. Words were important. Full stop. However, when childhood gave way to adulthood, the writing ceased, as life got in the way. K.C. discovered erotic fiction in 2009, when the purchase of a ménage storyline led to the startling discovery that reading about men in love was damn hot. In 2012, arriving at a really low point in life led to the desperate need to do something creative. An even bigger discovery waited in the wings—writing about men in love was even hotter….

K.C. now writes full-time and is loving every minute of her new career. The laptop still has no idea of what hit it… it only knows that it wants a rest, please. And it now has to get used to the idea that where K.C goes, it goes.

And as for those men in love that she writes about? The list of stories just waiting to be written is getting longer… and longer….

Good day! We are the voices that live inside Will’s head. The ones who whisper to him constantly, beckoning him to speak of our adventures, to tell of our love, and perhaps, if we’re in a mood, kill a person or two.

We guide his hand as he tells our tales where love is the most powerful force, but must be worked for, molded, and finally, embraced. There can be no shortcuts or substitutions on the path to a happily ever after.

We hope you will join with us as Will fulfills his obligation to ensure our stories are told and, we hope, enjoyed.
