Each time Damien goes to work, things grow more bizarre, starting with Sam—an artist who has been dead for years and now somehow… isn’t. Damien’s unusual circumstances also free him from the restrictions of monogamy—or so he thinks. Levi, who cannot believe Damien’s claims, fears for his sanity. John also has strong doubts when Damien reveals knowledge of a catastrophic event looming in John’s future. Whether the men he loves believe his wild claims or not, neither can deny Damien is languishing, and if they cannot save him, he’ll be lost. More importantly, they must convince Damien to save himself.
Time Travel is something new to me. I am not much of a history buff, so historical novels don’t do it for me at all. This is probably the first intentionally read time travel story I have ever read, and I found it quite enjoyable.
I didn’t quite understand the logistics in this story, but I kind of just suspended disbelief and enjoyed the ride. Damien had a lot of internal baggage that impacted his relationship with his current boyfriend and his time-travel crush. I found him to be a not very likeable character, but I did enjoy how he interacted with John and Levi in each dimension (?).
It was fun to take a trip back to the 80’s. I mean, I was a kid so I didn’t get the entire scope of 80’s flare, but I do remember some of it. Big hair, ripped clothes, eye-liner, and a more overt rebellion. I also remember crying when my mother dressed me in a denim mini, leggings, and red suede boots for a kindergarten disco…. Ahhhhh the horror that was the 80’s. The Art during that time wasn’t really art to me, and apparently Damien feels the same about the art his employer creates.
I enjoyed the pace of this story. The writing was good. As my first real taste of a time-travel I can’t say I hated the experience, but I didn’t love it either. Well, I actually think it was Damien that I didn’t love, and since he was the character point of view I was thrust into, I just went along for the self-absorbed ride.
His relationship with Levi was sub-par. I couldn’t understand how they reacted to each other later on when it appeared that they were only a casual hook-up. Yes, they wanted more, for some reason, but I’m not sure they had what it took to get there, even if Damien wasn’t having an affair with someone in the 80’s.
Nevertheless I think this story was a bit of fun. It had good depth. The concept was interesting, and it has not put me off this sub-genre now that I’ve had a taste. The characters were well developed and the plot worked well, even if it left me with a lot of questions. I will definitely give this author, and this sub-genre another go in the future.
