Authors, Families, and Story Research
Hi, all! Thanks to the Boy Meets Boy crew for having me today. I’m thrilled to be here. :D

When it comes to authors, their families and friends, and the question as to whether or not they’re “out” as a gay romance author, I’ve heard the whole gamut of responses. Anything from “everyone in my family/circle knows” to “only a select few” to “it’s a total secret.” I’m fortunate in that most of my family does know what I write, and if they have an issue with it, well, they haven’t mentioned it to me.
My husband, despite being mildly bemused by the fact that I write about gay couples, is very supportive of me and my writing. He’s surprised me with collages made from my book covers, he proudly tells people I’m an author, and he’s often game to listen while I talk out a plot and give me suggestions. And from time to time, he’s actually a resource for me.

In my upcoming book, Hook, Line, & Sinker, the main characters bond, in part, through their mutual love of baseball and fishing. The title comes both from the fishing itself and from the common meaning of the phrase, which is “totally” or “completely.”

My husband’s favorite hobby is fishing. During the summers, he often vanishes to go fishing for hours at a time, either by himself or with his father and occasionally other relatives. It’s something he and his father and brother have done as a family since they were kids. So when I needed a resource about fishing, he was naturally the first person who popped into my head. He’s fished at the lake where Blake, Cas, and their friends camp out for a couple of weekends. He told me about boats and trolling motors and the best spots to catch certain types of fish. Everything in the book that’s fishing related comes from him. He’s also contributed certain ideas and plot points in my other stories, like the Christmas novelette I’ll have out in mid-December.

I love the fact that I can turn to my husband and other friends and family members for things like this. I can’t imagine having to hide everything I was working on and being unable to discuss it with anyone. I know I’m lucky in this regard. I don’t know how other authors research, but aside from finding books on whatever my given subject is, my first instinct is always to seek out the people I know who could provide me with not only information but firsthand experiences. In addition to being a visual learner, I’m also very auditory—listening to stories and talking things out verbally is often how I plot or work through issues—so thanks to everyone out there who’s ever dealt with my rambling and helped me out. You know who you are, and it’s much appreciated. :D

Keep an eye out for Hook, Line, & Sinker, which releases from Dreamspinner Press tomorrow, November 19th. This is a spin-off from my April release with Kade Boehme, Wood, Screws, & Nails, but it can stand entirely on its own. If you want a chance to win it for free, be sure to check out my Rafflecopter giveaway! But if you want to pre-order it now, you can do so directly from Dreamspinner. The book will also be available from Amazon, ARe, and other e-tailers.

Thanks for reading! Catch you on the flipside. <3

Title: Hook, Line, & Sinker
Author: Piper Vaughn
Series: Hard Hats #2
Blurb:
When they were teens, Castor McCormick was the bane of Blake Kowalski’s existence. Their mutual animosity led to summers filled with rivalry. Now, nearly two decades later, Cas is moving back into the neighborhood to live in his grandmother’s old house. Blake tells himself he isn’t interested in seeing how snarky little Cas grew up, but when his mother dupes him into visiting his former nemesis, he finds out “pretty” can evolve into “sexy as hell” on the right man.
Cas didn’t think he wanted to see Blake again. No one has ever pushed his buttons like the arrogant boy he remembers from their youth. Turns out, the adult version of Blake still gets him hot under the collar—and everywhere else. With Blake on leave from work to nurse an injured leg and Cas taking time to move and unpack, they form a tentative friendship that turns into a sexual affair neither man can deny. But when Cas’s job sends him out of state to deal with a difficult client, their new relationship will be tested, and if they fail, Blake’s broken leg might not be the only thing to end up scarred.

Piper Vaughn Bio:
Piper Vaughn wrote her first love story at eleven and never looked back. Since then, she’s known that writing in some form was exactly what she wanted to do. A reader at the core, Piper loves nothing more than getting lost in a great book—fantasy, young adult, romance, she loves them all (and has a two thousand book library to prove it!). She grew up in Chicago, in an ethnically diverse neighborhood, and loves to put faces and characters of every ethnicity in her stories, so her fictional worlds are as colorful as the real one. Above all, she believes that everyone needs a little true love in their life…even if it’s only in a book.
