Review: Unbroken Hearts (Unbreak My Heart #2) by K-lee Klein

Second Edition

Country singer turned rancher Brett Taylor fought his way out of the bottle so he could have JT Campbell in his life. JT's patience, intelligence, and humor broke through Brett's walls of depression, and now the once-isolated rancher and his young California guy in search of himself are together on Brett's Texas ranch.

While Brett and JT are more in love than ever, they’re still dealing with past baggage and learning how to move forward. Brett’s former lover casts a long shadow over their lives—one JT tries to pretend doesn’t bother him. Can Brett soothe his fears with the sort of sappy, sentimental Valentine’s Day JT was taught to shun growing up—but secretly always wanted?

When Halloween rolls around, a costumed night out at the local bar might lead to another romantic first. And on Christmas morning, JT awakes to some sweet loving and the most meaningful gift he could ever imagine. The New Year truly brings a new beginning—ushered in by some silly, sparkly, and sexy fun.

One year. Four important holidays. Two men who have worked hard for the love and trust they share and the bright future that’s finally within their grasp.

First Edition published as Unbroken Hearts and Unwrapped Hearts by Amber Quill Press, 2014
.

When I had finished Unbreak My Heart earlier this year I was quite bummed when I couldn’t find the next 4 shorts anywhere! Though JT and Brett got their well deserved happy ending, my love for epilogues had me clamoring for more. Imagine my delight when I saw DSP was releasing one of them!!

Though low on the steam, this was high on the feels, and very very romantic as this showcased just how far Brett and JT have come in their relationship. Though insecurities still pop up here and there, they both work on it hard - communicating effectively and showing their steadfast commitment to each other

Fun and heart warming, fans of the original story won’t be sorry revisiting these two on Valentine’s Day, Halloween, Christmas, and New Years, watching as they strengthen their love and make new memories and traditions to call their own.

I really did enjoy this - both JT and Brett are just so likeable and willing to do anything needed to make the other feel secure and happy. This book contains both Unbroken Heart and Unwrapped Hearts and I definitely will keep my fingers crossed for the rest to be released soon. Hopefully, I won’t have to wait too long!

Thank you to the author/publisher for a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Twenty years ago, Paxton Marshall realized he liked boys, in particular his brother’s best friend, Brad. Pax now runs a successful art gallery, but he’s never found anyone who stirs his heart the way Brad did.

Brad Watson is back in town for his twentieth high school reunion. However, the celebration of long-ago days is the last thing on his mind. He’s there for one reason: to finally tell Pax how he feels.

Pax is shocked to learn Brad is not only gay but also interested in him. Dating a man in Ames Bridge isn’t as simple as it sound, though. In order to make a relationship work, both men will have to bolster their courage and alter their expectations.

*This book is an expansion of a previously published short story titled Open to the Past. Over 35,000 words have been added.*

Excerpt

A knock on the shop door drew Pax’s his attention; probably his assistant, Cindy. It wouldn’t be the first time she’d forgotten her key, and no one else would be dropping by this early. Microfiber duster in hand, he twirled his way past the worktables and unpainted pottery pieces.

He sang along with Madonna as he reached for the doorknob, and froze—Brad was grinning at him through the front window.

Heat rushed to Pax’s face. For a moment he contemplated racing over to turn the music off, then walking calmly back to the door as if the last few seconds had never happened. Could he convince Brad his earlier appearance was a hallucination?

Brad placed his hand against the window and peered in. “Is this a bad time? I know I’m really early.”

“Um…no. Just a sec.”

He would open the damn door, talk to Brad, and generally behave like a respectable adult. That’s what would happen.

With a deep breath, he turned the knob and stared, openmouthed, unable to form a single word. Was Brad even more gorgeous than he’d been two years ago? At eighteen he’d been the hottest boy in school, but now with his dirty-blond hair showing hints of gray, he was even better. His T-shirt stretched taut over his biceps, and his jeans fit like they were tailor-made for his muscular thighs. But the thing that made Brad even more desirable now was how relaxed and happy he seemed. In high school he’d always been restless, as though he were uncomfortable in his gorgeous body, despite having it made as far as anyone else could tell. Pax wondered what had changed.

Pax looked up at Brad and realized he’d been caught giving him a blatant once-over while he stood in the doorway. “Um… Where are my manners?” Fled in the face of his insanity? “Come in. That is, if you’d like to.”

“I would.” He smiled, showing off the dimple in his left cheek.

Pax wanted to run his tongue across it. Instead, he made a dramatic show of bowing and sweeping his hand toward the interior. “Enter, sir.”

Brad laughed and stepped inside. Pax shut the door behind him and locked it, hoping Cindy would be late so he’d have time to show Brad the gallery without anyone else there.

“Is it ’80s day?” Brad asked.

Pax needed to accept that he would be blushing the whole time Brad was there. “No, I was just cleaning, and this music motivates me.”

“Let me know if I’m keeping you from something. I woke up early, and I was anxious to see you.”

Anxious to see him? Him? Pax’s knees threatened to give. Was it possible…? No. Just because Pax had spent far too many hours fantasizing about Brad saying he was gay or bi, that didn’t mean it was going to happen.

Review: Bitten by Desire (Regent's Park Pack, #3) by Annabelle Jacobs

Two lovers from rival packs. Have they come together only to be forced apart?

Alec Knight, a beta in the Regent’s Park pack, guards his heart carefully. Ghosts from his past keep him alone and angry, any hope of a relationship impossible while guilt from the pack wars still haunts him. With the anniversary drawing near, Alec needs a distraction.

As a lowly member of the Primrose Hill pack, Mark Appleton isn’t used to having his alpha’s attention. Lately he’s had more than his fair share, and not for the right reasons. Despite growing suspicions that all is not well, Mark tries hard to do better, but constant criticism leaves him desperate for a stress outlet.

Sex is a good way for shifters to let off steam, and while their packs attack each other with accusations and lies, Alec and Mark work out their frustrations in bed. Pillow talk and shared secrets lead to a closeness neither was expecting, but when pack relations reach an all-time low, any future for them seems out of the question.

If they want to be together, they’ll have to go against their alphas’ wishes—except Alec won’t and Mark can’t.

I’m going to reiterate again because I’m a nag that way that this series should be read in order. I skipped the first one and have pretty much caught up on Nathan and Jared but they feature heavily in this story, so again, don’t be like me.

Annabelle Jacobs delivers a strong, plot-driven story in Bitten By Desire. I can attest that this one is a bit of a rollercoaster ride. I really don’t want to spoil the story so I’m going to shut up about it. But it's SO GOOD!!!

A really weird thing is happening to me with these characters, though. I usually am sorta in Mehsville about at least a few of the characters, but not this series! Nope. In this series I really like all the characters even the villainous ones that you’re not supposed to like play their roles to the hilt! I found myself smiling and getting a little verklempt at some of the scenes between these people at time and other times I found myself getting 16 different kinds of ragey at the bad dudes.

The pack dynamics are the best! The way the betas are portrayed, the way they feel about their unit members, the way they try to put them at ease when they sense their anxiety...

And Cam! He's a particularly spectacular alpha. Fair, honest and trustworthy; he's good people I tell ya. I have some serious heart eyes happening for him.

Alec is portrayed as being cold but I disagree. I think he’s efficient and no nonsense, though he’s not particularly interested in any romantic entanglements so maybe that’s where the “coldness” lies? He’s a fantastic beta. He’s loyal, steadfast and would lay down his life for the good of the pack every day of the week and twice on Sundays, so that makes him pretty amazeballs in my book.

Mark seems to agree with me on the amazeballsness. He’s keen on the older R-pack beta and would like nothing more than to climb him like a tree. The fly in the ointment is that his alpha, Newell <---douchecanoe, has a grudge the size of Texas against Cam. He's jelly if you ask me, but anywhatevers.

With a whole lot of animosity betwixt the two packs it’s not a great idea for Alec and Mark to be engaging in the boom boom, but what fun would that be? A lil danger fucking never hurt anyone, ammiright?

This is the first shifter/shifter pairing so they’re a bit rough with some biting, rimming, marking territory a.k.a. cum play and manhandling, but honestly… I can’t even believe I’m about to say this, but the sex was…

I thought Tim and Seb were hotter. Maybe I was disappointed by the lack of hate sex? There was heat, it just didn’t change my life. However, as we all know I'm a filthy perv and hotness is totally subjective anyway so read it and decide for yourself.

Bottom line, I was waaaayyyyy more captivated by the story arc and their relaysh. Alec and Mark’s connection and eventual bond was in the spotlight and it gave me #feelings. It builds over the narrative from stress relief to more frequent "scenting" to possessive and growly to bonded mates. I loved that there were no games and no back and forth. They're both shifters and realize what's happening and at some point realize that they don't mind that they're headed to Lovesville and just let it happen. It made my heart happy.

I’ve no idea if this is the end. I hope not but I didn’t get a sense of who might be the next coupling and I don’t really know what to do with that other than shamelessly deploy some pathetic eyes…

…in the hopes that the Regent’s Park Pack will return. Because I want to know what happens next.

Recommend to shifter romance fans and those who like action in their stories.

Review: Someone to Call My Own (Road to Blissville #2) by Aimee Nicole Walker

Psychic Emory Jackson and former black ops specialist Jonathon Silver are men from two completely different worlds with one thing in common: heartbreak. Emory still mourns the loss of his husband five years prior, and Jon is reeling with grief from the recent death of his twin brother.

Sparks fly when mutual friends introduce them, but it’s so much more than basic attraction. There’s an undeniable awareness and a sense of belonging that neither man can deny. Despite Emory’s premonition of a future with Jon, he has vowed never to love again. Jon is convinced that his tainted soul is the reason he will never have someone to call his own. What if they’re both wrong?

Maybe these broken men with their jagged edges could somehow align perfectly to form something whole and beautiful. But will that realization come too late for them?

Someone to Call My Own is the second book in the Road to Blissville series. These books can be read as standalone or as part of the series. The author first introduced these characters in the Curl Up and Dye Mysteries, but it isn’t necessary to read that series first. This book contains sexually explicit material and is intended for adults 18 and older

We met Emory and Jon back in the Curl Up and Dye series.  Emory, Josh's enigmatic new neighbor who moved into the 'Murder House' and Jon, Nate's twin brother who popped up out of nowhere (literally) have had a somewhat volatile relationship since the first time they set eyes on one another.

Emory is still grieving over the loss of his husband, River, five years ago and isn't looking to ever find love again.  He's a bit broken and the guilt and anguish over River's death is eating him up inside and he's living a half-life, just making it day by day.  Having suffered a blow to the head in the accident that claimed his husband's life, Emory wakes up with a psychic ability that enables him to 'see' things, past, present and future.  This enables him to help solve cold cases so he travels around the country, aiding the local authorities in whatever town he's been 'called' to.  He ends up in Blissville after having a vision of an address on an envelope.  He doesn't know why he's there but trusts in his visions so he doesn't question it.

Jon is grieving too.  After finally meeting his twin brother, whom he never knew existed until his mother's death-bed confession, he only has seven wonderful months with Nate before he's violently taken away.  Jon is an enigma.  He has no past - at least from Gabe's viewpoint.  There are no records of him even existing prior to him finding Nate.  Turns out, Jon is ex-military, black ops to be specific.  The things he witnessed and was a part of during his term of service have resulted in him feeling as though he is undeserving of love, or even friendship, really.

One night, Emory has a dream about a man who he at first thinks is River.  The dream is erotic and explicit and Emory is horrified to find out at the end that it was not River there with him, but some mystery man.  When Emory and Jon meet shortly thereafter, Emory discovers that it was Jon in the dream.  He is terrified of the thought of replacing River and so pushes Jon away.  The rest of the book is a cat-and-mouse game of Jon trying to first befriend Emory and then get him in his bed. Neither one of them ever expected for their journey to end at love.

This second book in the Road to Blissville series didn't quite meet my expectations.  While I liked it and I was happy to be back in this world, I was a bit disappointed in the execution.  The book is touted as a standalone and, yeah, I can see how it maybe could be one if you've never read the Curl Up and Dye series but, honestly, I don't recommend reading it by itself. Or, maybe I do?  I dunno.  It's hard to separate myself from the prior series.

This story, like the first in the series, has a lot of recap.  I mean, a lot.  While this may be good for first-time readers, it is really annoying to those of us who have read the previous books.  I feel the author has done a disservice to herself by putting so much recap in.  It moves the story at break-neck speed, causing it to feel very surface level, like we're skimming over it instead of delving deeper into the heart of things.  There was a lot of telling instead of showing because of this too.

It wasn't until we got near the end that things got interesting.  I think this is because we finally got to a new point in the story, where new material was written.  I liked the last third of the book a lot.  There were the feelings I was looking for!   It was full of depth and heart and emotions and I ended the book with a schmoopy sigh.  I just wish it could have been like that for the entire story.

I do plan on continuing this series as I love this town and it inhabitants.  Hopefully, now that we've gotten the stories for the secondary characters from the Curl Up and Dye series out of the way, there won't be any recap in future installments.  One can only hope.

“This is not the night you die.”

After years of working for a loan shark, Robert is done with blood and violence. All he has to show for it is a bag of money and a lifetime of regrets. There’s no other way out of his line of work than in a body bag.

So Robert decides to die.

But on the night he chooses to seal his own fate, destiny offers him a chance at redemption. When Robert saves a handsome young escort from a terrible death, he has no idea he is setting in motion much more than one last attempt at proving that inside the hardened shell, he is a decent human being.

Charming, quick-witted, and full of smiles, Nathan is all Robert could dream of. He’s also ready to fall into the arms of his gruff protector. Robert, on the other hand, has never been with a man and will first need to fight his own demons if he is to accept that his whole being wants to make Nathan his.

With his former boss hunting them both, time is ticking, and Robert might just not get the chance to decide before it’s too late. More importantly though, Robert will stop at nothing to protect the man who’s made him feel alive again, the man who is the only thing between him and the abyss.

“I never had to think much about death before, but I did yesterday. I thought I would die. In a hole. Covered with dirt. Suffocate underground. But then you saved me.”

WARNING: This story contains scenes of violence, torture, mentions of suicide, offensive language, morally ambiguous characters, homophobia and homophobic language.

Excerpt

Robert slowly lowered himself next to the man and watched the thick fabric move with the hurried rhythm of his breath. “How much do you owe Vogel?” He’d seen so many people in this position before that in Robert’s mind this guy was somehow melting into a collection of them all.

The fabric pulled close to the stranger’s face, making his nose poke at it. “If anything, he owes me! I did what he asked of me. I don’t belong here. It’s all lies!”

“What does that even mean?” Robert asked and nudged the body. His tongue was dry, and he groaned when he realized the bottle was now out of reach. How could this night have gone off the rails so rapidly?

Nathan went quiet for long moment. “Have you ever seen Spartacus? You know, the gladiator TV show?”

Robert frowned, thrown aback. “Are you drunk?”

“No! No… I’ve been sober for a while now.” To Robert’s surprise, Nathan crawled a bit closer in his direction, so dangerously close to the hole that Robert had to stand in his way. “It’s just that there’s this one gladiator there, and if you’ve seen the show, I was wondering if you thought he was gay or bi. I promise this is going somewhere.”

Robert rubbed his flushed face, kneading the flesh and letting his scruff scratch his palms. “Are you trying to tell me you’re gay? Yeah, because this is very important right now.”

Nathan inhaled a deep breath. “I… it’s just that it’s my only fault here, you know? I mean, if you don’t want anyone to know you’re gay, don’t put your dick in a man, right?”

Robert rolled his eyes and pulled out a switchblade. It was dark, and he wasn’t in the mood to look for the zipper. The sleeping bag would join Robert’s former colleagues under the dirt.

He lost balance, falling to his knees instead of just leaning down. Grabbing a handful of the thick fabric, he tore a hole in the sleeping bag. “You propositioned one of Vogel’s men?”

“No! He was the one doing the propositioning! I stayed at his lakeside villa for a week! I thought we’d have a good thing going, that he liked me. And then he flipped and turned into a murdering psycho!” Big blue eyes looked up at Robert from the opening he just created. Pretty like a doll, but the dry blood marring the pale skin under Nathan’s nose reminded Robert that the young man was most definitely made of flesh and bone. His lips were swollen under the red smear, but that didn’t make Nathan any less attractive. If anything, their plumpness made Robert want to lick, nip, and part them with his fingers. Nathan’s cheekbones were the kind you were more likely to see in a magazine than in real life, and the slight dimples to the sides of his lips suggested he used to smile a lot before whatever got him here.

He was a toy thrown away by someone who got tired of playing with it, but it was hard for Robert to imagine how anyone could toss such a gem into the dirt. If this boy were his, he’d—What? What would he do? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Because Nathan wasn’t the kind of toy Robert was allowed to have. He wasn’t a kid anymore, and his self-control never slipped.

Robert tore the bag with a strong tug to both sides of the cut and offered Nathan his hand. In the blurry light, and looking back into the incredible blue of Nathan’s eyes, it almost felt as if he were the one begging for Nathan’s attention.

Review: The Stark Divide (Liminal Sky #1) by J. Scott Coatsworth

Some stories are epic.

The Earth is in a state of collapse, with wars breaking out over resources and an environment pushed to the edge by human greed.

Three living generation ships have been built with a combination of genetic mastery, artificial intelligence, technology, and raw materials harvested from the asteroid belt. This is the story of one of them—43 Ariadne, or Forever, as her inhabitants call her—a living world that carries the remaining hopes of humanity, and the three generations of scientists, engineers, and explorers working to colonize her.

From her humble beginnings as a seedling saved from disaster to the start of her journey across the void of space toward a new home for the human race, The Stark Divide tells the tales of the world, the people who made her, and the few who will become something altogether beyond human.

Humankind has just taken its first step toward the stars.

This was pretty fascinating and if you're into sci-fi this will definitely hit the spot.

This starts off on the Dressler with Captain Colin McAvery, Dr. Anastasia Anatov, and Engineer Jackson Hammond as they float through space carrying a seedling towards an asteroid where it will be harvested. The ship they are on is made from bio and mechanical parts, and the scientist (Ana) on board is harvesting the seedling to create a fully bio ship/world for humans to live on. It's all pretty intriguing.

Throughout the story we get a glimpse into the ship mind which appears to have independent thought, and dreams often. It wasn't in the creepy ghost in the machine way, but a cognizant being worthy of respect and consideration.

Some drama ensues during this harvest mission but the end result works well.

Part Two is set 10 years after the seedling is harvested and a colony is being built (grown) on this new ship/asteroid world. Jackson's son has arrived on this new world and is ready for an adventure and some answers.

I loved the lush world that is built in this story. I can picture it in my mind and would love to visit. The additional characters introduced were generally well developed and interesting, but mostly I just loved the world. The writing style was easily followed, and although there is some technical language, it isn't overwhelming. The flow is easy, and I got lost in the adventures, and imagining the surroundings.

If you're looking for a fairly easy to read, but complex adventure story set in futuristic space, this is definitely a winner for me.

I will be looking out for this author’s other work.

Guest Post:
Excerpt – Eddy Tremaine

For my guest post, I thought I’d share a scene from “The Stark Divide”:

Eddy Tremaine backed the Ford F1050 hauler back into the mouth of the cavern. The beat-up old truck belched a cloud of black smoke in complaint. His hurried conversion of the vehicle’s electrical system to run on biofuel had been a limited success.
It had gotten them up the mountainside, and that was all that mattered.
Davian Forrester, his ex, stood behind the truck, guiding it and its precious cargo back into the darkness inside the shallow cave.
Eddy had been sure he was going to lose the load a couple of times on the way up the mountainside, as it shifted on the truck’s flatbed around some of the hairpin turns, but the moonjumper had stayed attached to the truck, and soon they’d have it hidden away securely.
The old Ford’s radio had picked up the satellite news transmissions on the way up from the valley floor. Things were going downhill out there fast, and battles had already broken out between the North American Union and the Cino-African Syndicate along the Pacific Coast. Eddy didn’t figure it would be much longer before there was a full-scale war.
Another war. The last ten years had been a nonstop series of them.
He was done fighting.
“That’s it,” Davian called from the rear of the truck. “There’s a ten-foot drop-off back here.”
“Got it,” Eddy shouted back. He set the brake and got out to gauge the parking job he’d done. The front of the truck was beneath the roof of the cavern, far enough back that only the bumper would be visible from above. It’ll have to do. “I’m gonna start unpacking the jumper.”
“Okay,” Davian called back. “I’ll get things started with lights and power.”
Reconnecting with Dav had been a godsend. He couldn’t have accomplished all of this on his own.
Davian was setting up the solar lights in the cavern next to the truck. They’d brought four industrial-strength light suckers. Each one had a “funnel” that channeled sunlight down a thick fiber-optic cable and diffused it into usable light, and a power trap that siphoned off some of the power to charge a battery that provided a reduced illumination at night.
While Davian set up the lights, Eddy began to uncover the Moonjumper. He removed the heavy plastic tarps that had hidden the little ship from view, folding them up and setting them aside. The craft had a 270 degree field of vision through a wraparound plas window, and a skylight window up top. The metallic panels of the little ship were dull with age, and the plas looked scratched and worn too. This is going to work. This has to work. Somehow they would make it work.
The Moonjumper line had been retired from active service by AmSplor in the 2090s. Eddy had picked this one up at auction from the New Richmond Air and Space Museum a month before, for a song. He hoped to God she was still space-worthy. She’d been out in the elements for at least a decade as a showpiece for the museum.
He’d flown one like it once or twice before at air shows in the South, in Birmingham and New Little Rock. He hoped he could remember how to handle it, if they could make it space-worthy again.
Something was bugging him—his sixth sense. He’d learned to trust his body’s signals during his two tours in the Hong Kong urban battle zone, back when he’d been called Evelyne. He saw no need to change that habit now. He looked at the bright day outside uneasily. “I’m gonna set the fuzzer and then grab some branches to put over the front of the 1050,” he called to Davian.
“Okay. I’ll finish getting her uncovered.”
Eddy grabbed a bag from behind the driver’s seat. He peeled it apart at the magnetic strip and took out the four fuzz balls—small silver spheres that together would create the fuzz field. He set each one equidistant around the edge of the cavern entrance, in front of the truck, activating them as he placed them. When the fourth one came online, the fuzz field sprang into place. It was like a pool of water hung in three-dimensional space, reflecting what was around it and distorting and hiding what lay behind, both visually and electromagnetically.
From the inside, all he could see was a slight film in the air.
He went to retrieve his hatchet. He wanted to cover up the front of the truck with some branches so it would pass at least a casual visual inspection, just in case the field failed.
Eddy was about to step through the fuzz field when his instincts stopped him again, the small hairs standing up on his forearms.
Davian was hauling something around back inside the cavern, making a scraping sound.
“Dav, be quiet a minute,” he hissed, peering up into the sky. He stood completely still and searched for the source of his unease.
After twenty seconds, he saw it, a kuripa drone slipping around a ridgeline into the valley below. It was casting back and forth slowly, as if looking for something or someone.
“Drone,” he whispered to Davian, who had come to stand next to him.
The thing resembled nothing so much as a giant robotic cockroach, its wings fluttering in the mountain breeze with a green metallic sheen. He hadn’t realized the Chafs had gotten so bold, sending their battle drones into eastern Pennsylvania and West Virginia. If he’d been outside the field when it flew by….
He held his breath as it passed within a hundred feet of their hideout. Those things were equipped to sense heat patterns. He hoped to God it didn’t notice the tire tracks that led up to the cavern. Fortunately, it was a warm day, so the truck’s heat signature was probably all but wiped away by now.
At last the drone passed over another ridge and was gone.
“We have to be careful. Only short trips outside of the cavern, and always, always check for drones first.”
Davian nodded. “How long until we can get this beastie operational?”
Eddy glanced back at the dark form of the Moonjumper. “Three days? We’ll do the best we can.” He hoped it would only take three days. God help us if we can’t make her work.

Author Bio:

Scott spends his time between the here and now and the what could be. Enticed into fantasy and sci fi by his mom at the tender age of nine, he devoured her Science Fiction Book Club library. But as he grew up, he wondered where all the people like him were in the books he was reading.

He decided that it was time to create the kinds of stories he couldn’t find at his local bookstore. If there weren’t gay characters in his favorite genres, he would remake them to his own ends.

His friends say Scott’s mind works a little differently – he sees relationships between things that others miss, and gets more done in a day than most folks manage in a week. He loves to transform traditional sci fi, fantasy, and contemporary worlds into something unexpected.

Starting in 2014, Scott has published more than 15 works, including two novels and a number of novellas and short stories.

He runs both Queer Sci Fi and QueeRomance Ink with his husband Mark, sites that bring queer people together to promote and celebrate fiction that reflects their own lives.

Review: His Convenient Husband (Love and Sports #1) by Robin Covington

NFL football player Isaiah Blackwell lost his husband three years ago and is raising their teen son alone. He lives his life as quietly as his job allows, playing ball to support his family but trying not to draw unwanted attention. His quiet life is shaken up when a mutual friend introduces him to Victor, a visiting principal ballet dancer who is everything Isaiah is not.

Brash and loud, Victor Aleksandrov has applied for political asylum to avoid returning to Russia, where gay men are targeted and persecuted. He’s been outspoken about gay rights in his home country, and if he doesn’t get asylum, going back to Russia is a death sentence.

Their one-night stand turns into a tentative friendship, a relationship they both agree is temporary…until Victor’s denied asylum. Isaiah can’t offer Victor a happily ever after, but he can propose something that’ll keep Victor in the US and safe...marriage. He just doesn’t expect his new husband to dance away with his heart.

2.75 Hearts

Mixed bag.

From now on (until I find something else that amuses me) this is my mixed bag image of choice!

Go read that blurb and look at that cover. That cover is sit on face worthy, man. I'd scoop that cover model up and butter my biscuits. Consider my basement flooded, if you catch my drift. And I think you do.

The blurb is trope city (and I definitely don't hate on that). Between the cover, the blurb, I was stoked. So stoked, I ignored the buzz book potential and requested this sucker.

I tied on my reading bib and dived right into this sucker. And from the first chapter, something was off. So I kept reading, because I'm stubborn and hopeful (what a combo) with books. I don't like to DNF and hope the author will turn it around.

His Convenient Husband
is a mixed bag and I got mixed emotions while reading this. On one hand I got happy with certain things: the mention of LGBT issues and activism (hold that thought), interracial romance when the POC isn't written as a kink (I'm not a fan of that). However, there were issues as well: characters that said the right things but didn't back it up, telling rather than showing and not having a true grasp on either main characters' character. They could've been anybody.

Hence me:

The category romance (it's cracky fluffy on speed) is a fluff tale of a one night stand meets fake marriage. It was a meld of some of my favorite tropes. Chechen ballet dance Victor is world famous and out. The reader is told how much he stands up for gay rights, how he's loud and brash. (Not really) He applied for political asylum assuming he was going to get to stay in the States. On the world's worst set up through a shared agent, gay football player and widower, Isaiah invites the dance to his house since Isaiah's teen son is a huge fan of Victor (and Isaiah's agent wants them to get together)

So they do. Very hotly out in a pool, but I didn't see a connection between either guy other than insta-lust.

The time jumps weirdly in this where the one night stand meant something to both men. So when the political asylum falls through, Isiah offers to marry Victor to save him.

You would potentially go to jail (should anyone finds out about a fake marriage) and if the person who was denied gets married the next day, I would expect this country's immigration agents to flag the fuck out the entire thing and personally fly Victor back to his country.

But no mention of worry. In fact the couple blab to friends and family it's a fake marriage to keep Victor in America. After searching high and low to see if this was an alternate reality, no such thing. Unfortunately, I've read this plot written stronger with defined repercussions earlier this year.

The pair have really no connection. Consider me crossing the bridge leaving reality.

The secondary characters are used heavily to tell the read how much the two can't take their eyes off each other, how much of an activist Victor is. This is a pet peeve of mine, using secondary characters to get the romance and plot across.I liked that the author had a character bring up social issues, I just wish it didn't read like a suit being put on to look cool.

Besides the info dump and heavy telling, I think I figured out what the main issue of the story was: the characters had the potential to have depth. I've read fluffy romances where the main characters have difficult backgrounds and still make some impact.

The first half of the story was weak. It wasn't until the last third where the story gained some ground but I wasn't invested in the characters. They talked a good talk but I'm not buying what they're selling.

Funny thing is, even if the characters were hovering the two dimensional mark, the sex scenes were rocking. Hence my mixed emotions. If this was pure erotica - 3.75-4 Hearts easy. I read a lot of erotica, the smut was pretty good: dirty talk, outdoor sex (pool/porch), some possessive inclination, rimming, lots of oral. Nice.

Alas, this is a romance and the meh characters have to be counted in my rating.

And a few times Victor rubbed me the wrong way with his view on being different or gay due to wearing makeup. I expected a different stance from him. It's more than just makeup. This could be from me reading better written activists in previous romances.

Eh, he tried. And I'm looking for depth in a fluff piece. So I'll just wrap this up now.

Loved the tropes, not a fan of the execution or characters. But I liked the sex and the premise potential.

This face sums it up just about right.

I'm not going to write this author off either. There were a few moments when it wasn't so bad. There were other sports characters that have lead potential. The author is not a newbie to writing romance, but still fairly new in writing MM. The intimate scenes (sexual and non sexual) didn't read awkward or like used to be MF. I've read worse, so it's a step in the right direction.

I might try something else from this author.

Maybe, if I'm in the right mood.

Ugh, mixed bag.

*smh*
